Doha, Qatar Cruises

Doha is the capital of Qatar and the most populous city on the coast of the Persian Gulf in the east of the country, north of Al Wakrah, and South of Al Khor. Whether it's the stunning and constantly changing skyline or the massive investments, Qatari authorities make in landmark cultural icons. This multicultural city is home to most of the country's population and expatriate communities. It has been rising from the desert and is an ambition brought to life by the world's most talented architects and their teams. Now, you can turn your transit in Doha into an incredible experience while discovering Qatar on a Qatar cruise trip vacation. A Doha cruise trip can be a great way to experience all that the city has to offer, as well as the surrounding areas of the Persian Gulf.

Doha Highlights

In 2022, the city slated to host the soccer World Cup will be the hub of one of Asia's most dynamic economies. The city's impressive skyline is constantly enhanced by new wonders, which makes it a popular tourist destination. You can also enjoy a wide variety of cultural festivals. It's the place to be if you want to see the latest international films or the best Arabic musical performances. A few highlights of Doha can be found here.

1. Creating Its Own Future

As skyscrapers sprout from the ground like palm trees in a desert oasis, Doha is paving its way into the future. Although it's in a development phase, the city remains relatively small. It is ideal for short-term visitors because sights like museums, galleries, and souks are easily accessible. The fact that the city is not forgetting its tradition and history while it undergoes such rapid development is comforting. Doha keeps one foot firmly in the past even as it strives to create a bright future.

2. Eating and Drinking

You can sample all the indulgent sweet and savory dishes of Qatari cuisine while on a cruise to Doha. Qatari cuisine features bold flavors combining influences from Africa , India , and the Mediterranean . Qatari cuisine uses rose water, Yemeni honey, dates, and camel meat cooked to a tender state. The most popular Qatari dish is Machboos, a thinly sliced grilled meat wrap served at lunchtime. You'll find this traditional dish in local restaurants around Souq Waqif, where it's similar to Indian biryani.

3. Shopping

A serious pastime in Doha is shopping, which includes everything from big names in fashion to fragrant spices. The Pearl is an artificial island in the city where you can enjoy the city's best shopping experience. This futuristic suburb is awash from the coast of Doha with luxury labels. It represents international fashion's crème de la crème. The historical Souq Waqif occupies the opposite end of the spectrum. There is nothing more Middle Eastern than a trip through this ancient labyrinth in Doha, which has become one of the city's most popular attractions. Aside from dried fruits, nuts, and woody incense, you'll find clothing, spices, jewelry, and Bedouin rugs here.

Interesting Spots to Visit

For a taste of traditional Qatari culture, you can visit the city's many museums and cultural attractions on a Qatar cruise trip. An impressive seafront corniche lines Qatar's capital and largest city, lined with strikingly modern architecture. A traditional dhow ride will give you an incredible view of the sea. There aren't many famous tourist attractions in Doha, but there are some exciting attractions, along with a glittering skyline that constantly changes. Tourists can visit the following beautiful spots on their cruise trip from Doha.

1. Katara Village

One of the best places to visit in Doha is Katara Cultural Village, located on the eastern coast between West Bay and The Pearl. TEDx Doha and Ajyal Youth Film Festival are two of its most significant events. It is designed to mimic the look, feel, and atmosphere of a traditional Qatari Al Faraj through its buildings and facilities.

2. The Pearl

There are Mediterranean-style marinas, residential towers, private villas, hotels, and top branded boutiques and showrooms on The Pearl - Qatar, an artificial island off the coast of Qatar. There are dozens of restaurants, waterfront cafes, and shops around the world at the Pearl - Qatar, making it a trendy dining spot. Due to its ambiance, architecture, and alfresco dining, the Pearl is one of the most visited spots in Qatar and is often called the Arabian Riviera . The Pearl - Qatar offers a world-class example of modern architecture. This feature makes it stand out from other full-time residences and makes it an ideal place where beauty is everywhere you look.

3. Inland Sea

Visiting the Inland Sea is a must to experience desert adventures in Qatar. A UNESCO natural reserve 60 km from Doha, the Inland Sea of Khor Al Adaid is one of Qatar's must-see places. During high tide, the dunes meet the sea in one of the few places in the world. The site offers breathtaking landscapes and a chance to see unique species. Khor Al Adaid is home to rare turtle species and dugongs. Only 4X4 vehicles can drive across the dunes to reach this place.

4. Islamic Cultural Center

The Islamic Cultural Center, also called Fanar, is a place the whole family should visit. Non-muslims are welcome to participate in various activities offered by this charitable organization. Visitors are often drawn to the center because it organizes several exhibitions and activities throughout the year. Fanar offers Arabic courses to anyone who comes here, regardless of background. The courses are offered all year long and come in various types.

5. Museums and Galleries

The Qatari government has invested money in building its cultural infrastructure, with some fantastic results. In addition to paintings, ceramics, and carpets, the Museum of Islamic Art features various other art forms. There are plenty of cultural attractions, including the Arab Museum of Modern Art and the strikingly designed National Museum of Qatar.

When to Visit?

Doha is located in the Middle East and has a hot desert climate with high temperatures year-round. The best time to visit Doha is in the cooler months from October to April. The city is generally more incredible during these months than the rest of the year. The temperatures are more comfortable, ranging from the mid-70s to low 80s Fahrenheit during the day and dropping to the mid-50s to low 60s Fahrenheit at night. This is also the peak tourist season in Doha, so you can expect larger crowds and higher prices. On the other hand, if you're looking to avoid the crowds and find more affordable prices, you may want to consider visiting during the hot summer months from June to September.

Doha is Qatar's largest/principal port and capital city, with population around 2,4 million and total area approx 132 km2 (51 mi2). Port Doha (locode QADOH) is on the Persian/Arabian Gulf. Over half of Qatar's population lives in Doha City or its suburbs. The city is also Qatar's commercial capital and one of the Middle East's financial centers. There is a same-named seaport (Doha Port/Mina Doha) in Kuwait's Al Kuwayt Governorate.

The coastal territory (Trucial Coast) was ruled by Britain as part of the empire's strategy to secure safe passage through the Arabian Gulf for the merchant ships of the East India Company (1600-1874). The agreement with the local sheiks (signed in 1820) acknowledged British authority in the Gulf and practically ended the piracy and the slave trade.

The town of Doha was established in the early-19th-century as an extension of Al Bidda (British Qatar's largest city). The country was a British protectorate between 1916-71. Doha became the country's capital in 1971 when Qatar declared independence from the UK.

The city was selected as a host of renowned sporting events, such as "2006 Asian Games", "2011 Pan Arab Games", and most of the games at "2011 AFC Asian Cup". The 20th "World Petroleum Conference" was held here in December 2011. Doha also hosted "2012 UNFCCC Climate Negotiations" and "2022 FIFA World Cup".

In May 2015, the city was officially recognized as one of the "New 7 Wonders Cities" - along with Beirut (Lebanon) , Durban (South Africa) , Havana (Cuba) , Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia) , La Paz (Mexico) and Vigan (Philippines).

Doha City houses the headquarters of numerous domestic and international corporations and organizations, including Qatar's largest oil and gas companies RasGas, Qatargas, and Qatar Petroleum. The city's economy is built primarily on the natural gas and oil industries.

Qatar's cruising season is during winter (October through April). The seaport is managed by Qatar Tourism Authority (QTA).

During season 2017-2018, TUI Cruises (German shipping company) visited Doha 7x times, bringing ~17,500 tourists to Qatar. The same season was a record-breaker (~65,000 tourists, or 39% increase over 2016). Port Doha was visited by a total of 22 vessels plus 1 superyacht. The Port received 5x maiden calls ( MSC Splendida , Mein Schiff 5 , Crystal Serenity , Crystal Symphony , Europa 2 ). Data showed 86% disembarking passengers, of whom 53% booked city tours and 18% booked desert safaris.

The main factor for the Port's cruising business growth was the 2016-introduced free 96-hours transit visa for international tourists. Seaport's largest visiting liners so far are MSC Splendida ( MSC ) and Mein Schiff 5 ( TUI ). In 2017, Splendida (max capacity 3900 passengers) replaced  MSC Fantasia .

For season 2018-2019 were booked 43 ships (of which 10 with maiden port calls) and were expected 140,000+ tourists (passengers and crew). The season had 5x 2-ship days. During season 2019-2020, the cruise port expected nearly 200,000 visitors, targeting an annual volume of ~0,5 million passengers by the year 2026.

For season 2019-2020 the cruise port had scheduled a total of 74 ship calls, with estimated 186,000+ passengers plus 61,000+ crew. During the season here was homeported Costa Diadema , with booked 16 berthings (planned roundtrips).

Doha plans a port redevelopment project budgeted ~QR 2 billion (Qatari Riyals, ~USD 550 million).

In 2021-Q1, the French luxury travel brand Ponant  chartered the ship Le Champlain to Qatar Airways Holidays. The airline (via partnership with Discover Qatar) launched the "Luxury Coastal Cruise of Qatar" program custom-made for citizens and residents of the country. The exclusive program was based on a 3-night Persian Gulf itinerary (leaving roundtrip from Doha). The coastal sightseeing and exploration activities included snorkeling (at Al Ashat Island), gliding (over Khor Al-Udaid channel), scenic cruising for marine and wildlife viewings (hammerhead sharks, whale sharks, dolphins, dugongs, flamingos). The shipboard and ashore enrichment programs were led by expert tour guides - marine biologists, naturalists, ornithologists. Le Champlain's Qatar cruise season (late-March - April 2021) included 6 consecutive departures out of Doha, with all-inclusive prices starting from QR 4990 (USD 1370 / EUR 1140) per person with double occupancy.

For season 2021-2022, the Port had booked a total of 30 ship calls, of which 4 were maiden port calls and 4 by luxury ships. The Qatar Tourism Authority also developed special onboard flight programs for foreign cruisers that stay overnight in Doha for their departure and return flights, as such tourists start and end their flights from/in Qatar.

For season 2023-2024, Port Doha had booked 120 cruise ship berthings, with expected ~200,000 tourists.

Doha Qatar cruise terminal

Before the inauguration of Qatar’s new cruise port Doha, large-sized cruise ships docked at the Hamad Port (cargo port). Doha Port is located off Doha Corniche - several kilometers long waterfront promenade along Doha Bay. Before the port redevelopment, the largest cruise liners able to dock at Doha Port were with LOA length under 250 m (820 ft).

Due to the increasing number of cruiseship tourists, Qatar's Tourism Authority, Ports Management Company and Ministry of Interior took measures to facilitate the passengers' disembarkation process and entry procedures.

Following an investment in new security technologies and close collaboration with cruise ship operators, passenger processing / disembarkation time was reduced to just several minutes.

As part of the new process, cruise ship tourist (passenger and crew) passport details are shared with Qatar's immigration office 48 hours before the ship's arrival in the country. This allows cruise tourists to be cleared for entry before the ship docks in port.

Due to the short port stay duration (~8 hours), passengers and crew are eligible for transit visas (free 96-hour visas), which further eases the entry process. In 2017, Port Doha was visited by its largest cruise vessel so far -  MSC Splendida . The ship docked in Doha on December 20, bringing over 3900 passengers and 1400 crew.

Port Doha's new Grand Cruise Terminal was slated for opening/inauguration for FIFA World Cup 2022 (Nov 20 thru Dec 18). The new  facility has a large terminal building (sized 24000 m2 / 258334 ft2, divided into 2x terminals) and docking capacity to handle/berth 2x mega-ships (max 12000 cruisers/passengers + crew) simultaneously on a single wharf. The Grand Terminal buildings have departure and arrival halls, cafe, duty-free shop, parking areas (separate stands for taxis and buses), as well as a huge aquarium (interconnecting both terminals) and an art gallery. A large terrace (on floor 2) stretches across both buildings.

Israel-Gaza latest: Israeli minister hits out after US weapons warning: 'Hamas loves Biden'

Joe Biden has said he will not supply weapons if Israel launches a full-scale offensive in Rafah, a day after it emerged the US had paused a shipment of bombs to Israel. Listen to our Daily podcast on why a ceasefire hasn't happened while you scroll.

Thursday 9 May 2024 13:23, UK

  • Live reporting by Bhvishya Patel

Joe Biden's weapons threat "practically buries a hostage deal at this point", a source close to the Israeli leader has told Sky News.

The US president warned overnight that the US would halt the supply of some weapons to Israel if it launches a full-scale invasion of Rafah.

IDF international spokesperson Nadav Shoshani has issued a statement in response to reports aid is not getting into Gaza.

In a statement on X, Mr Shoshani said Israel closed the Kerem Shalom border crossing after four IDF soldiers were killed.

The crossing was reopened and Hamas "fired rockets at the crossing several times again".

"Hamas has a pattern of risking civilians for their terrorist agenda," he said.

Yesterday, Israel insisted the border crossing, which allows aid into Gaza, had reopened but the UN said deliveries have still not been allowed through.

By Alistair Bunkall , Middle East correspondent, in Jerusalem

We knew he was thinking it, but now it has been said out loud.

Although we can assume the US would have told Israel in private of its decision to withhold weapons in the event of a "major" Rafah invasion, to hear Joe Biden lay it out so publicly has shaken Israelis.

Some see it as treacherous, an outrageous move by the country's closest ally; others believe it is the predictable consequence of Benjamin Netanyahu's failure to heed American advice and warnings over many months.

Mr Netanyahu, who is yet to comment, is now faced with a dilemma: defy Mr Biden and invade Rafah anyway, or back down and look weak in the face of Israel's enemies: Hamas, Hezbollah and Iran.

"Bibi will say one thing and do the complete opposite," one seasoned Israeli political journalist told me earlier.

"Biden's mistake was saying it out loud, he doesn't understand the Middle East," another messaged.

"Do it, fine, but don't brag about it."

US diplomats I've spoken to in Jerusalem this morning, though, say the administration has repeatedly tried to work with Israel, over seven months, and with little to show for it.

They've gently cajoled Israel to let more aid into Gaza, to design a "day-after" plan, to limit civilian casualties and to deliver a humanitarian plan for Rafah - some of these things have happened very slowly, others not at all.

The US is clearly fed up and out of patience.

The immediate concern is how Mr Biden's announcement will affect negotiations for a ceasefire that are ongoing in Cairo.

The CIA director has just flown back to the Egyptian capital after a short visit to Tel Aviv and work is under way to close the gaps.

Logically, Hamas will now be unlikely to offer any further compromises if they think the threat of an invasion of Rafah has gone away.

So does Mr Netanyahu try to convince the right-wing hawks in his government that his hands have been tied and that he has no other choice but to accept the deal that is on the table while he buys time for future action?

Or does he dial down the temperature, keep the negotiations bubbling but order the IDF to continue with "limited" actions on the edges of Rafah, all the while creeping further towards the centre without alarming the White House? Achieving some military objectives without stepping over the line.

There is a third option: go into Rafah hard, and soon. Use the considerable arsenal and firepower that the IDF has, make some ground in a limited timeframe, then get out and soak up the wrath of Washington.

That option might deliver a short-term victory but would outrage the US administration and could put at risk options for future Israeli operations, for example in Lebanon.

There have been many pivotal moments during this seven-month war, and this is another.

The "UK wants the fighting in Gaza to end but calling for an immediate ceasefire makes it no more likely", Lord Cameron says.

"It is more practical to focus as we have in the UN and elsewhere on securing that immediate humanitarian pause -that is stopping the fighting right now," he says.

"This will see the hostages releases and more aid delivered.

"Then, we can turn this into the sustainable ceasefire without a return to fighting at all."

He also describes Britain's system and scale of arms exports to Israel as completely different from those in the US, saying the sales it licences were relatively small and policed by strict procedures.

"There's a very fundamental difference between the US situation and the UK situation," Cameron says.

"We do not have a UK government supply of weapons to Israel, we have a number of licences, and I think our defence exports to Israel are responsible for significantly less than 1% of their total."

Lord Cameron is delivering a speech on UK security in London.

The foreign secretary says innocent citizens in Gaza are enduring a crisis "that will only worsen" if aid cannot reach them safely.

"This is a world more dangerous, more volatile and more confrontational than most of us have ever known and we need to face up to that fact and act accordingly," he says.

He points the situation in the Red Sea where "ship after ship have been attacked".

"While many countries have criticised the Houthi attacks, it is only the US and Britain that have been willing and able to step up and strike back," he says.

Lord Cameron says NATO countries should agree to spend 2.5% of GDP on defence and the country must "rise to the challenge that we face" and "make security a top priority".

Around 80,000 people have fled Rafah since Monday, according to the United Nations agency for Palestinians.

The data comes as pressure increases on Israel to refrain from a fully fledged ground operation in Rafah.

Israel says it is conducting what it describes as a "precise counterterrorism operation in specific areas of eastern Rafah".

People have searching through the rubble after an Israeli strike on homes in Rafah.

Earlier this morning, Agence France-Presse reported heavy shelling in the southern region and Palestinian news agency  Wafa  reported eight people had been killed after an aircraft bombed a house.

Israel says the southern Gaza city is the last Hamas stronghold in the enclave and has threatened a full-scale invasion despite warnings from allies.

More than one million Palestinian civilians have sought shelter in the region, many previously displaced from other parts of Gaza after Israel's orders to evacuate from there.

A vessel carrying aid to a pier built by the US off Gaza has set sail from Cyprus.

The US-flagged Sagamore left the port of Larnaca this morning and officials say the vessel will be used to offload supplies on to a floating pier built to expedite aid into the besieged enclave.

For context : Cyprus opened a sea corridor in March to ship aid directly to Gaza, where deliveries via land have been severely disrupted by border closures and Israel's military operations.

The US-based charity World Food Kitchen used the route twice before seven of its workers were killed in an Israeli airstrike on 1 April.

Donald Trump has accused Joe Biden of being "too weak to demand law and order" after Columbia University cancelled its main graduation after weeks of protests on campus over the Israel-Hamas war.

The Ivy League school has said it is not going ahead with its ceremony this month due to "security concerns that unfortunately proved insurmountable".

Graduation had been scheduled for 15 May.

Responding to the latest announcement, the former US leader said on his social media platform Truth Social that "crooked Joe Biden is 100% responsible" for colleges cancelling graduations.

"Crooked Joe is taking the side of these terrorists," he added.

Joe Biden's "reputation is on the line" if Benjamin Netanyahu decides to ignore him, our Middle East correspondent Alistair Bunkall says.

He says he suspects the Israelis knew about the US leader's decision not to supply Israel with weapons for its assault on Rafah before it was made public.

"I'm sure this would have been communicated to the Israelis behind the scenes," he says.

But by making it public, the US is "setting a very clear red line".

"Therefore, Mr Biden's reputation is on the line if Benjamin Netanyahu decides to ignore him and go into Rafah regardless," he says.

"At that point Biden will have a decision to make - does he soften and side with his ally or does he stand firm to the red line he has now set?"

Mr Netanyahu may be thinking the US has set clear red lines in the past that have been ignored by leaders.

"I'm thinking the use of chemical weapons in Syria and then with Vladimir Putin and the invasion of Ukraine," Bunkall says.

"When those respective leaders have decided to ignore the US, the US has done nothing about it so perhaps Mr Netanyahu may feel this is an empty threat."

Qatar Airways' New Credit Cards Offer Automatic Elite Status for One Year

Qatar Airways has long been known for having a top-notch inflight experience, especially if you’re sitting up front in the airline’s Qsuites business class . The Doha-based carrier is consistently ranked as one of the best international airlines in the Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards. Add in a newly renovated Hamad International Airport—recently awarded the title of best airport in the world —and you have the makings for a solid travel day.

Now, it’s easier than ever for US travelers to earn and use points and miles with the world-class airline thanks to Qatar Airways ’ first-ever cobranded credit cards specifically designed for Americans. The two cards released on Tuesday are issued by fintech startup Cardless, and offer ways to accumulate miles faster, as well as an opportunity to get on a fast track toward coveted elite status.

You can apply for the new Qatar Airways Privilege Club Credit Cards on the airline’s website . But before your do, here’s everything to know about Qatar Airways ’ new credit cards.

Perks, benefits, and annual fee

Instead of unveiling a single product, Qatar Airways and Cardless are coming out from the get-go with two cards, each tailored towards a different type of traveler . Both earn “Avios" points, the loyalty program currency used by Qatar and partner airlines including British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling, and Finnair.

First up, the $99-per-year Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card is an ideal fit for travelers who don’t want to spend hundreds on a high-annual fee card, but are at least semi-loyal to the airline. This Visa Signature card offers four Avios per dollar spent on Qatar Airways purchases, two Avios per dollar spent on restaurants, and one Avios per dollar spent on all other transactions.

Meanwhile, the $499-per-year Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite Credit Card is for diehard airline loyalists . That includes travelers who are itching to earn mid- to upper-tier levels of status with Qatar Airways. This card has an even higher earning rate than its more affordable sibling: five Avios per dollar on Qatar Airways purchases, three Avios per dollar on restaurants, and one Avios per dollar on all other spending. As a Visa Infinite-branded card, members can take advantage of select concierge, luxury hotel, and rental car privileges .

The real kicker, however, is that spending will count towards elite metrics on both cards, providing a tangible and all-new way to upgrade or retain status within Qatar Airways Privilege Club.

Visa Signature cardholders (with a $99 annual fee) earn two elite-qualifying Qpoints for every $2,000 spent, while Visa Infinite cardholders (with a $499 annual fee) earn two elite-qualifying Qpoints for every $1,500 spent. (QPoints are earned for any flights with Qatar Airways or with any Oneworld member airline and can only be used for earning status; Avios points can be redeemed for a variety of rewards, including flights.)

Signup bonus and complimentary first year of status

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card offers a signup bonus of up to 40,000 Avios upon being accepted for the card: 20,000 Avios after the first transaction and an additional 20,000 Avios after spending $3,000 in the first 90 days. While this is certainly not the highest bonus offer we’ve seen on an airline-specific cobranded card, it is fairly easy to earn.

Visa Signature cardholders will also immediately get bumped to the Silver status tier for one year, which includes perks such as 25% extra Avios earnings on eligible paid flights; priority standby, check-in, and boarding; complimentary lounge access and two guest passes annually; and extra baggage allowance. Qatar Privilege Club’s Silver status equates to Oneworld Ruby status, which comes with benefits when traveling on other Oneworld carriers like American, British Airways, and more.

Meanwhile, the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Infinite Credit Card offers a signup bonus of up to 50,000 Avios upon being accepted for this credit card: 25,000 Avios after the first transaction and an additional 25,000 Avios after spending $5,000 in the first 90 days. Additionally, travelers who get this card will also receive automatic elite status—Gold status with Qatar Privilege Club—for the first year of card membership.

The perks of Gold status include 75% extra Avios earning on eligible paid flights; priority standby, check-in, and boarding; complimentary lounge access and four guest passes annually; extra baggage allowance; a meet-and-greet service at Hamad International in Doha . This status with Qatar equates to Oneworld Sapphire status; most notably, Sapphire status unlocks access to business-class lounges on partner airlines like the beautiful Cathay Pacific lounges in Hong Kong , The Pier , and The Wing .

Finally, if Visa Infinite cardholders want to level up to top-tier Platinum status, Qatar Airways has a fast-track solution. With the Visa Infinite, new cardholders get 150 Qpoints after spending $5,000 in the first 90 days. And since 600 Qpoints are required for Platinum status, you’d be only 450 Qpoints away to Platinum status.
