Top Breweries in Langley
The Langley Township and Langley City are quickly becoming a craft beer mecca, between the Kwantlen Brewing Program, six commercial breweries (and 7th opening soon).
5 Roads Brewing
5 Roads Brewing launched in 2019 about a block from Trading Post’s brewery. There is no patio, but the tasting room is modern and welcoming. Unlike a lot of craft breweries, the bar seating is front and center; payment is taken on the side, creating a very social environment for the singles bellied up to the bar. There are large long group tables to accomadate you and all your drinking buddies.
5 Roads tasting room has a TV, unlike most craft breweries in the Fraser Valley. They have relatively good food, although limited offerings; you can go here and have a meal without feeling like you need to hit a drive-thru on the way home. The personal-sized pizzas are very good value at $13 to $15. Overall 5 Roads a pretty good place to watch the big game if you don’t want to get stuck with a choice between a bunch of yellow lagers at your local chain sports bar.
The beers are well crafted and varied. I have yet to find my “go to” beer at 5 Roads, but I have never had something that I didn’t like there.

Camp Beer Co
Camp Beer Co is one of the Fraser Valley’s newest breweries. Founded by Kevin Larsen, avid homebrewer Dave Henry.
I originally met Dave Henry while working at BosaGrape Homebrew Supply Store . He was easily our best mail-order homebrew customer. Dave later founded the Langley’s Full Barrel Homebrew Club and lead the club winning the Best Amateur beer at the Tri-Cities Pro-Am Cask Festival.
Camp Beer Co is a little hard to find because they don’t really face the road, nor do they face the popular Langley Townhall Public House, but look closely on the Southside of the building for a large welcoming patio. Inside the Camp tasting rooms has a cozy fireside area to keep you and your friends warm.

Dead Frog Brewery
Dead Frog is known for funky branding and even funkier beers. They moved from a remote Aldergrove industrial park to a large commercial space at the corner of 200th and 88th just off Highway 1. The bar offers 25 beers on tap (some hits; some misses), so there is sure to be something for everyone.
The tasting room features long tables creating a very social space; great for meeting local craft beer lovers. Although the food offerings got off to a rough start, the kitchen has stepped up its game, and there are lots of great shareable menu items such as nachos, wings, and charcuterie boards.
Dead Frog is owned and operated by Langley’s Donna and Derrick Smith. After 10 years of operating a Ubrew called Backwoods Brewing in Aldergrove (I think it is now called the Copper Kettle UBrew) the Smith founded Dead Frog Brewing in 2007. Since then the long ginger bearded son Cole Smith and Kwantlen Brewing Alumnus has taken over as head brewer.

Farm Country Brewing
Farm Country Brewing is Langley City’s only commercial brewery. Located the Value Village parking lot in one of Langley City’s many defunct thrift stores. The seating area and brewing area are very large; clearly built with growth in mind.
Seasoned Brewmaster, Jack, came from Main Street Brewing and Russell Brewing before helping to launch Farm Country. He has brewed some very well crafted clean beers. When I go to a new brewery I always start with a light lager like a pilsner because they are very hard to hide flaws and I am happy to report that Jack’s pilsner is very well brewed.

Kwantlen Polytechnic University Brewing School
Kwantlen Polytechnic University houses a brewing school at the Langley Campus. Unlike the discount haircuts you use to get a the local community college, Kwantlen staff and students are brewing some great beers, and even won the 2019 BC Brewery Award .
Kwantlen is primarily a teaching brewery but is open on Friday afternoons between 1 pm and 6 pm to the public for free samples and growler sales. There are normally four rotating beers available and because they brew such small batches there is normally at least a few new beers each week. Growler fills are only $10 (taxes in) which is probably the cheapest growler fills in Metro Vancouver.

Locality Brewing
Locality Brewing is one of six farm-based breweries in BC. They grow and malt their own barley, wheat, rye. Plus produce hops, honey, and berries for brewing. Although there are many wineries in the Lower Mainland , it is very hard to grow a significant portion of your brewing ingredients in this climate. But Locality has done an excellent job producing field-to-glass beers that truly show off the Langley “terroir”.
The brewery is in a rural area of Langley that can be a little tricky to find, but it is well worth the drive. There is no tasting room, but there is a large picnic area with propane fireplaces and a view overlooking a pond.

Trading Post Brewing
Trading Post Brewing was not the first brewery in Langley, but it was the first to have a tasting room, and offer a modern craft beer experience. The brewing is done at #107 20120 64th ave in Langley, but there are Trading Post restaurants in Fort Langley and Abbotsford. The brewery and tasting room is decorated with exposed wood beams and historical Langley decor. There is a weekly cask on Thursdays and live music on most Fridays.
Trading Post was founded by Fort Langley resident and Trinity Western University Alumnus Lance Verhoeff and his father Paul, with craft brewing veteran Tony Dewald that the helm as the Brewmaster. Since launching Trading Post Brewing and the restaurants, the Verhoeff’s have also organized the Fort Langley Beer Festival and the SummerSet Music Festival .

Each beer is preservative free and uses premium hops, malt, yeast, and fruit. These fantastic brews are truly a reflection of their pride and passion!
CAMP BEER CO. #110 – 19664 64 Avenue
As a community-based brewery and tasting room, Camp continues to successfully supply the need for better beer and quench the thirst of craft for their friends and neighbours. FIVE ROADS BREWING CO. #1 – 6263 202 Street

Their brewery and 50-seat tasting room, with a natural outdoor patio, serves as their home base where their lineup of craft beers is created with pride and passion. Some of their tried and true favourites include Five Roads Pilsner, Shake N Bake Pale Ale, and Permanent Resident IPA.
LOCALITY BREWING 25160 72 Avenue
As a “Field to Glass” brewery, it’s all about the people: the farmer, the brewer, and the master. It’s an unbroken chain of artisanal achievement, resulting in delicious thirst-quenching brews. Every step of the process is taken seriously, from planting the seed to enjoying the draft. At Locality, they not only grow their own hops and barley, but they also process them right on the farm, making them completely local from start to finish.
SMUGGLERS TRAIL CASKWORKS LTD. #140 – 9339 200A Street
Longtime rugby teammates founded Smugglers in 2017 with one thing in mind, Langley needed more beer! Specializing in classic styles for every occasion, their brews are crafted from the best ingredients they can get their hands on, making their beers always balanced, and never boring. Centred around community, their tasting room boasts a full kitchen and has become a place where you can drink, eat and share stories.

Take a Self-Guided Langley Brewery Bike Tour
by Taryn Eyton in Food & Drink , Town on October 25, 2021
Trading Post Brewing. Photo: Tourism Langley
If you’re into craft beer, don’t miss the cluster of craft breweries in Langley. Use our step-by-step guide to spend an afternoon biking (or driving) between tasting rooms. The 12 kilometre route visits six different breweries in Langley.
Biking Note: This bike route uses bike lanes and quiet streets where possible, but it does involve a little bit of riding on busy streets. Be careful. Use this link for turn-by-turn directions on Google maps.
First Stop Farm Country Brewing
Start your brewery tour at Farm Country Brewing, celebrating agricultural heritage in the heart of Langley City. Their beer names reflect their farm roots: Barn Burner Citra Wheat Ale, Farmer’s Tan Amber Rye Ale, Saddle Up Stout, and Countryside Sour Blackberry Pear. Stop in to check out their latest rotating guest ciders and local wines. They also host lots of events in their huge tasting room, including live music and comedy shows.
Location: 20555 56 Avenue, Langley City
Photo: Farm Country Brewing
Second Stop: Five Roads Brewing Co.
To get to your next stop two kilometres away, cross Glover Road and head west on Logan Avenue to 204 Street. Go north on 204 across the overpass, then turn left on 62 Avenue. Stay on 62 Avenue for two blocks, then turn right onto 202 Street. Watch for the brewery on your left half a block later.
Named for a nearby intersection, Five Roads Brewing is proud to represent the crossroads of the community. Their brewery was built with flexibility so they could change up their brews easily. Look for seasonal favourites like Oktoberfest Märzen and German Lager alongside old favourites like Permanent Resident IPA, which won Gold in the American IPA category at the 2021 Canadian Brewing Awards. If you’re hungry, try their house-made pizza or charcuterie boards.
Location: 6263 202 Street, Langley City
Photo: Five Roads Brewing
Third Stop: Trading Post Brewery
The next stop is just 400m away around the corner. Continue north on 202 Street, then turn left into a parking lot about half a block before 64 Avenue. Follow the parking lot north, then west to the brewery.
Grab a seat at the Trading Post Brewery’s tasting room. It’s open to the brewery so you can watch (and smell!) the beer being made. They have 12 beers on tap and a full menu. Try something from one of the rotating guest taps or sample classics like Best Coast IPA and Amber Ale. Stop in on Saturday nights to enjoy live music.
Location: 20120 64 Avenue, Langley City
Photo: Tourism Langley
Fourth Stop: Camp Beer Co.
Your fourth stop is 1.5km away just off 64 Avenue. Head west on 64 Avenue, then turn left onto 197 Street. Make the first right into a parking lot to find the brewery.
Camp Beer Co. is a casual brewery that aims to be a place where the community can gather to celebrate local tastes. Their beers are lower in alcohol and higher in flavour – that way you can enjoy more of them. Their signature beer is the easy-drinking Camp Beer Lager, but they also make lots of adventurous brews like the First Light Coffee Cream Ale, Lost Horizons Guava Kolsch with Gin Botanicals, and Forager Bumbleberry Sour. Their tasting rooms serves up snacks, smokies, and baked potatoes, but the real stand out is their s’mores bar with four sweet and gooey varieties including Black Forest and S’moreo.
Location: 19664 64 Avenue, Langley City
Fifth Stop: Dead Frog Brewery
If you still have energy, there are two more breweries to visit but they are a little further away. It’s six kilometres to your next stop. Take 197 Street north, then turn right onto 68 Avenue. Use the overpass to cross 200 Street, then go north on the bike path. Turn right on 88th Avenue, then left on 201 Street. Find the brewery one block later at the end of the cul-de-sac.
After over a decade in Aldergrove, Dead Frog Brewery moved into a new space in Langley in 2018. They have a huge tasting room with a full kitchen and over 20 beers on frog-leg-shaped taps. They’re known for their innovative and often strange beers. Try their incredibly strong Warhead Imperial Kettle Sour or their spicy Pepper Lime Lager. Lovers of more sedate beers will love the Classic Nut Brown Ale, the recipe that launched Dead Frog back in 2008.
Location: 8860 201 Street, Langley Township
Photo: Dead Frog Brewing
Last Stop: Smugglers Trail Brewery
The final stop is two kilometres away on the other side of Highway 1. To get there, head south on 201 Street, then right on 88 Avenue. Go right on 200 Street and follow it over the highway. Go right at the fork onto 201 Street, then make the first right into 200A Street. One block later turn right into the Port Kells Centre to find the brewery.
During the Gold Rush of the 1950s, Langley was a key stop for miners, but it was also important for smugglers moving gold, beer, and other contraband out of sight of British tax collectors and authorities. This newer brewery pays homage to that history with its name: Smugglers Trail Brewery . They newer lean heavily on the English style of cask-conditioned beer with traditional beers like their Flaskers British Ale, and their English Style IPA Orion 1-1, which won a silver medal at the 2021 Canadian Brewing Awards. They also change up flavours seasonally if you’re looking for something unexpected. There’s also a full kitchen if you want a meal.

Beer from Start to Finish at Locality Brewing in Langley
If you want to know more about what’s in your pint glass, head out to Locality Brewing in Langley to enjoy quiet, fresh air, and even fresher beer.
“Yeast” Van, move aside — Langley is one of the newest craft beer hot spots in BC. The agricultural community here is proving to be an eager market for good beer. In summer 2021, after years of preparation, Locality Brewing opened its doors and became Langley’s eighth brewery — but with a twist. Following in the footsteps of such breweries as Pemberton Valley BeerWorks (the “Beer Farmers”) , Farmhouse Brewing Co. in Chilliwack, and Barnside Brewing Co . in Delta, Locality is a farm brewery that produces its beers using ingredients grown and processed on-site.
If that sounds like a lot of work and planning — it is! Sitting with me in the scenic picnic area before their opening day, co-owner Andrew Hamer recalled a 2016 walk through the farm property with Iain Hill of Strange Fellows Brewing . Iain, with a realism borne from his years of industry experience, warned Andrew about the workload involved in starting a farm brewery.
“What you’re trying to do, it is not easy!” Andrew remembers Iain saying to him. And that warning proved to be true — Andrew and his wife Melanie MacInnes have had five long years of physical labour and bureaucratic red tape to fight through to turn her family’s farm into a working farm brewery.
“We needed to be passionate about farming,” said Andrew.
“We’d talk about all this stuff around the family dinner table, but we weren’t stubborn enough to be farmers in the early stages.”
Once they invested in the equipment and applied for permits, however, it was clear that Andrew and Melanie were committed to their plan.
Farm history – from bovines to beer
The MacInnes farm is Locality’s home, and the property has been in Melanie’s family for over 45 years. Her parents are active on the farm to this day. The MacInnes family has always been warm and welcoming to others, and the farm was somewhere that Melanie and Andrew (in their younger years) would regularly return to, often bringing their backpacking or surfing friends along. Its 95 acres formerly sustained dairy cows, but now is used to grow barley, rye, hazelnuts, and cider apples. It is also a film set for various productions, including the Hallmark Channel series When Calls the Heart . In fact, the back of the brewery building has been transformed into a fake mountain and mineshaft, complete with a miner’s cabin. Those who dare to enter that mountain tunnel eventually find themselves among fermentation tanks and farm equipment in the barn next to the tasting room.
Exploring is what you’ll want to do at Locality, whether it’s a peek into the fake mine tunnel or a walk around the pond. You might join a walking tour through the hiking trails, beer in hand. Perhaps your kids will try climbing up on one of Locality’s large antique tractors, or maybe you’ll be lucky and catch part of the barley harvest — the first stage of making beer.
Farm Beer, Step 1: Harvesting Barley
Unbelievably, Andrew and Melanie actually hand-scythed their first barley harvest themselves, but they also now use a combine and a 1950s-era antique threshing machine. It’s huge, impressive, and a little scary: a piece of farming history brought to life. As the feeder pulls sheaf after sheaf after barley into its spinning blades, the thresher noisily separates the barley kernels from the stalks, eventually pouring pounds of kernels into waiting bags and spewing clouds of chaff out the other side. The process fills the air with dust and hay, and you’ll be brushing the bits and pieces off your clothes for hours.
Farm Beer, Step 2: Malting
Once the bags of grain have been collected and cleaned, they are ready for malting. Unlike most breweries in BC, Locality has its own malthouse, tucked away in the back of the brewery building under the fake mountain.
“So many craft beer drinkers don’t actually know what malt is — or that barley needs to be malted before it can be made into beer,” says Andrew. “So part of what we’re doing here is really offering something educational — something people can learn about.”
Andrew has taken to malting enthusiastically and expertly guided me through the malthouse, explaining what happens at each stage. The grains are first dampened, or “steeped,” after which they are slowly turned in a large barrel for several days until germination occurs. To halt germination at the right point, the grains must be kilned (heated). The temperature and time of kilning gives the malt its colour and flavour — a Pilsner malt, for example, will be kilned at lower temperatures than a Vienna malt. Although Locality’s malthouse is currently small, Andrew has ambitions to expand his malting program. When you visit Locality, ask him about malting — you’ll doubtless learn something new. Not many breweries out there are malting their own grains, so this is truly a unique feature of Locality.
Farm Beer, Step 3: Hops
Outside the brewery barn and near the soon-to-be food truck location, there are rows of bright green hop bines.
While Locality does source some specialty hops externally, they grow their core hop varieties themselves and send them out to be tested and pelletized. In fact, samples of all their farm-grown ingredients are regularly sent out for quality control.
“Garbage in, garbage out,” as Andrew puts it. “We need to make sure we’re meeting all the specs.”
To encourage a sense of community, Andrew and Melanie invite members of the public to participate in the hop harvests and experience a bit of farm life for themselves. When I arrived to help with some hop-picking, I found various volunteers, from pre-teens to senior citizens, milling around outside the brewery barn happily pulling hop bines onto the tractor, picking hops, drinking coffee and beer, and snacking on the food provided to sustain them through the day. The hop cones were a stunning bright green and left a pungent, fresh smell on my hands.
Farm Beer, Step 4: Brewing
When hops (fresh or pelletized) are ready, brewing can begin! Head brewer Karen Cheshire came to Locality from a brewing job at Steamworks Brewing Co. and is now enjoying the creative freedom of working for a small brewery. Her skills are evident in the excellent beers Locality has been producing, including a very subtle, clean honey lager, a nicely balanced orange guava gose, a dry Belgian-style saison, and a classic West Coast IPA. Coming this September is a barrel-aged vanilla porter and a black tea-infused black lager, so I recommend getting there soon before they sell out.
Farm Beer, Step 5: Community
The hops I helped pick on harvest day were Centennials for a special fresh hop collaboration brew with Brookswood Brewing. Brookswood’s founders were there harvesting hops along with everyone else, and they are looking forward to opening their doors nearby in early 2022, with Legit Hops founder Dave Morrish as their brewmaster. This fresh hop ISA collab gestures to the sense of community felt among Langley’s breweries.
Locality makes beer — and it’s good beer — but community is ultimately what it’s about for Andrew and Melanie. They want people to be involved in the process of creating beer — whether that means helping gather in the barley, pick the hops, or even just learning a bit more about it. They want the MacInnes farm to be the same welcoming hub that it was for them and their friends decades ago, and they seem to be succeeding.
If beer isn’t your thing, quality teas, coffees, kombuchas, and iced teas are on offer, along with charcuterie-style picnic baskets with fresh local breads, cheeses, and meats. Most people will find something they enjoy here. And Locality is a place where time seems to slow down a bit, a place where you are able to savour the full sensory experience of the brewery. So find a spot on the grass, grab a drink, and take a moment to enjoy it.
