Puerto Vallarta at a Glance

Nestled on Mexico’s Pacific coast, Puerto Vallarta is a captivating blend of natural beauty and rich culture.

With its sun-kissed beaches, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culinary scene, it’s one of the most unique places to visit in Mexico for foreigners and locals alike.

Airport: PVR – Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport

Time Zone: Central Standard Time

Currency: Mexican Peso (credit cards accepted)

Language: Spanish, but English is common (you don’t need to know Spanish to visit)

Electric sockets & plugs: they use Type A (two-prong) and Type B (three-prong) – if you’re traveling with lots of electronics, bring a small powerstrip because most hotel rooms do not have enough outlets. 

Getting around: Taxis, Ubers and local buses are all fine to use.

Where is Puerto Vallarta Located? 

Puerto Vallarta can be found on the western coast of Mexico, right along the beautiful shores of the Pacific Ocean, as you can see in the map above.

It’s in the state of Jalisco, which is kind of like a Mexican version of a “state” in the U.S. 

When you look at it on the map, it’s right in the middle of the Bahia de Banderas, or Banderas Bay. 

How to Get There

Most major airlines fly directly into the Puerto Vallarta airport, named Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International Airport.

The airport code is PVR so you can search easily for flights. 

One of the best things about arriving in Puerto Vallarta is that the airport is in the city.

It’s located very close to the Marina and hotel zone, which are only about a 10 minute drive away.

To get to downtown neighborhoods (like centro and zona romantica), you’re only a 20 minute drive form the airport. 

Here are flight times from some popular cities:

Los Angeles: 3 hours

Vancouver : 4 hours, 30 minutes

Calgary : 4.5 hours

Toronto : 5 hours

Phoenix : 2.5 hours

New York City: 5 Hours

Cancun: 5 hours

What’s the Best Time to Visit Puerto Vallarta?

November to April – high season

November to April is the time to visit Puerto Vallarta, when the temperatures are mild, and the humidity and mosquitoes are at bay.

You’ll find many American, Canadian and European travelers visit during this time.  

A huge reason to visit at this time of year is because of the annual whale migration in Mexico.

From January to March, magnificent species like Pacific gray, humpback, orcas, and others gracefully traverse the Pacific coast of Mexico as they make their way to their breeding grounds.

Here are more details about what you can expect if you’re visiting in February , for example.

May & June – shoulder season

Many people still visit in May and June, which is considered shoulder season and the beginning of off-season.

It can be a great time to visit because the winter crowds have thinned out and hotel prices are a little cheaper.

The weather gets hot, but it’s not at its peak humidity yet.

You’ll also notice a lot more Mexican citizens start to travel and take holidays. 

July to October – off season

July through October is the rainy season in Puerto Vallarta and it gets extremely humid.

However, it’s usually sunny during the day or at least until mid afternoon, and then it usually rains every evening. 

Many restaurants in the ‘touristy’ areas shut down for the month of September, so I do not recommend visiting during that month. 

Where to Stay in Puerto Vallarta (neighborhood guide)

For easy navigating and holiday planning, Puerto Vallarta is split into different zones, which all have their own features. 

Starting from North to South, here is a summary of all the zones & why you might want to consider staying there. 

North Zone (Zona Norte)

Starting about 30 minutes north of the airport and beyond, you’ll find small towns and secluded resorts.

Quiet and serene, this zone offers a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle, with secluded beaches and charming fishing villages.

This actually stretches into the next state, called Nayarit. 

Stay here if you crave a serene getaway, surrounded by untouched beaches and quaint fishing villages, far from the bustling tourist crowds.

I recommend visiting Bucerias or La Cruz de Huanacaxtle.

Nuevo Vallarta 

A bit north of Puerto Vallarta, this upscale area is renowned for its luxury resorts, golf courses, and water adventures, perfect for travelers seeking an opulent beachfront experience.

Stay here if you’re looking for an opulent beachfront escape with luxurious resorts, world-class golf courses, and a taste of upscale coastal living.

Marina Vallarta 

A paradise for golf enthusiasts and water sports lovers, this zone boasts a tranquil atmosphere, luxury resorts, and a picturesque marina with fine dining options.

Is Puerto Vallarta Safe for Travelers?

While no destination is entirely without risk, Puerto Vallarta maintains a reputation as a safe haven for tourists.

For first-time visitors to Puerto Vallarta, especially those new to Mexico, the city generally offers a safe and welcoming environment.

It’s a popular tourist destination with a strong focus on visitor safety.

The city center and tourist areas are well-patrolled, and violent crime against tourists is relatively rare.

However, like any tourist destination, it’s essential to take standard precautions:

• be mindful of your belongings
• avoid walking alone in unfamiliar areas at night
• use reputable transportation services

Like any city, there are some scams that visitors need to be aware of, which I discuss in my article here . 

By staying aware and following common-sense guidelines, your visit to Puerto Vallarta is likely to be a safe and enjoyable experience.

General Puerto Vallarta Travel Tips

After over 20 visits to Puerto Vallarta, I’ve made a list of some random travel tips that are helpful to know. 

Greetings and Manners

It’s very common for locals to greet you and say hello, whether you’re passing them in the streets or at the resorts.

They’re just very friendly people! Don’t be afraid to smile and meet them with a greeting such as:

• Hola: hello
• Buenos dias: good morning
• Buenos tardes: good afternoon
• Buenas noches: good evening or goodnight
• Por favor: please
• Gracias: thank you

Haggling Culture

One of my favorite things to do is browse all the markets for handicrafts and other handmade souvenirs and trinkets.

If you’re looking at an item that doesn’t have a price, it’s very common to negotiate to come to an agreement on price. This is normal and expected! 

I suggest asking them to name their price, and then off about 50% less. Usually you can meet in the middle and come to an agreement for a price of 65 to 75% of the original asking price. 

And remember, if it’s not a price you’re comfortable paying, it’s perfectly acceptable to say thank you and walk away. 

(they might even offer you a lower price at this point).

Street Food & Tacos

Puerto Vallarta’s food culture is all about tacos and street food.

You can’t visit this city without trying at least a few dishes. 

First, if you’ve never tried street food (or traditional Mexican tacos for that matter), book a walking street food tour at the beginning of your trip! 

Then, you can go back and visit all your favorite spots and have the confidence to branch out and try other places.

Also, meal times in Puerto Vallarta are a little different than what you might be used to in the USA or Canada.

While restaurants will always be open at traditional meal times, you might be wondering why some places are completely empty or packed at odd times. 

Mexicans traditionally have a ‘first breakfast’ which is usually coffee and a light pastry. This is early, around 7 or 8am. 

Then, around 10 am they have a second breakfast which is a little heavier, and is usually something like Birria tacos. 

Then lunch is usually eaten around 1 or 2pm, and usually something like tacos, tostadas or tortas. 

And dinner isn’t usually eaten until 7:30 or 8pm and even much later.

Puerto Vallarta is a city and popular vacation resort on the Pacific Coast of Mexico.

Around the Bay, beautiful beaches, lush jungles, and sparkling waterfalls offer many opportunities for the adventurous, while five star resorts, world-class shopping, and gourmet restaurants satisfy even the most sophisticated traveler. Stretching from the south end of Old Town to central downtown, a newly extended and refurbished boardwalk along the ocean, called the Malecon, passes by any number of shops, restaurants, and hotels, and often plays host to mimes, breakdancers, clowns and artists. The residents of Puerto Vallarta are very friendly and generally willing to help with directions and other requests. Old TownVallarta (or the Zona Romantica district) south of the River Cuale is more like a Mexican town and less like a tourist trap. English is widely spoken, and as a tourist destination prices are higher than many other places in Mexico. Puerto Vallarta is very crowded at holiday times, if planning a visit to Mexico that coincides with a major holiday consider opting to visit Mexico City or Guadalajara instead. The cities empty out as Mexicans and tourists alike flood to the beaches.

In the summers, temperatures hover around 95°F (35°C), though can feel hotter because of the humidity. For the best weather in Puerto Vallarta, visit between November to May.

How many days do I need in Puerto Vallarta?

Puerto Vallarta isn’t a huge town — but you’ll still want at least four full days to see it all. However, if you want to explore the surrounding areas on some Puerto Vallarta day trips, you’ll want five full days; but of course: The longer the better!

Is Puerto Vallarta worth visiting?

Yes — Puerto Vallarta is one of the top beach towns in Mexico. However, there is so much more to it that makes Puerto Vallarta worth visiting. Besides beautiful beaches, Puerto Vallarta has a lot of old world charm — famously immortalized in the 1964 film,  The Night of The Iguana .

Spanish is the most widely-spoken, so some mistakenly say Spanish is the official language of Mexico. However, the government actually recognizes 68 national languages, including the Nahuatl Aztec language, and the Maya language.

Mexican Peso — Exchange rates vary, but have hovered around $18-21 pesos to $1 USD for about the last decade. You will find some places that take U.S. dollars, but usually at an unfavorable rate, so stick to using pesos in Mexico .

☀️ Mexico Weather

Mexico is a big country — the 7th largest on Earth, in fact! It’s hard to generalize the weather in Mexico, because it will vary greatly by where you’re traveling.

In general, temperatures are mostly mild everywhere all year long, though summers on the coast are hot and humid, and winters in Central and Northern Mexico are on the colder side. Throughout the whole country, the rainy season runs from (about) April through September.

✈️ Mexico Busy Season & Slow Season

• Mexico Busy Season: The busy season in Mexico runs October to March, as this is the dry season and you’ll get the best weather. December is the busiest month for tourism in Mexico.

• Mexico Slow Season : If you don’t mind some rain, you’ll often find the best travel deal during the Mexico slow season of April to September. Do keep in mind that June 1-November 1 is Hurricane Season, and Mexico beaches are all susceptible.

• Mexico Shoulder Season : The shoulder season is that magical time when prices are still low and the weather is good. The Mexico shoulder season is from about mid-October to November and January to early-April.

🤔 What is the mexico FMM ?

When you go through Customs & Immigration to enter the country, you’ll receive your Forma Migratoria Multiple , or FMM Tourist Card (sometimes listed as FMT). If you’re coming by plane or cruise ship, there is no charge; for those driving across the border, the FMM costs about $30USD.

In most circumstances, all visitors get a 180-day (six month) visa — so you can legally stay up to six months!

🚨 Have your FMM on you at all times

Keep in mind that though it’s called an FMM card , it’s actually just a small piece of paper. Keep your FMM on you at all times in your wallet, as this proves your legal status in Mexico. It’s rare, but if an officer stops you, they can ask to see your FMM.

🎫 Don’t lose your FMM!

You need to have your FMM on you at all times, as proof of your legal status in the country.

Be sure to keep track of your FMM, as you’ll have to give it back to an Immigration officer at the airport, cruise port, or land crossing when you’re leaving the country.

If you lose your FMM, there is a $600 peso ($30 USD) cost to replace it, and some paperwork you’ll need to fill out before you can leave the country.

If you’re flying home, plan to arrive at the airport about one hour earlier than you normally would to do the paperwork and pay the fine.

Puerto Vallarta is divided north and south by the gentle, vine-swathed Río Cuale, rippling down from its foothill canyon. The original town north and south of the river retains much of its charm, especially south of the river in the Old Town or Zona Romántica and the adjacent Playa los Muertos. In spite of a squadron of massively overbuilt hotels and apartment buildings, the appeal continues to the south, along the villa-decorated Conchas Chinas headland, past the village of Mismaloya and the nearby offshore Los Arcos underwater sanctuary, and farther south, to petite Boca de Tomatlán shoreline village.

There are many wonderful things to do and see around the Bay of Banderas. Bucerías lies along the northern shoreline, followed by an abundance of lovely beaches climaxing at Punta Mita and coral-strewn Playa Anclote, great places for sunbathing, surfing, and snorkeling. Excursions to wildlife-rich offshore Islas Marietas are a popular adventure as well.

For years, the Nayarit Coast was one of Puerto Vallarta’s best-kept secrets, but no longer: Sayulita has emerged as a major destination in Nayarit. Visitors come to enjoy the gorgeous beaches, good surfing, snorkeling, wildlife-watching, and cowboy-country ambience, along with Sayulita’s increasingly sophisticated shopping and dining attractions.

Moving north, the highlights beyond Sayulita include sleepy San Francisco, the still untouristed (by norteamericanos ) towns of Lo de Marcos, Guayabitos, La Peñita, and precious Chacala. Finally comes San Blas, famous for bird-watching, wildlife viewing, and occasional world-class surfing. Beyond San Blas is the idyllic automobile-free Mexcaltitán, an island village where an excellent museum tells the island’s fascinating story.

For travelers yearning to follow the path less traveled, the Jalisco Coast may be just the ticket. From Puerto Vallarta, it stretches more than 100 miles south, traversing pine-tufted mountains, desert-like savanna, lush tropical forest, and seemingly endless pristine golden strands.

The Malecon

Start your walking tour by strolling down the Malecon, Puerto Vallarta’s seaside boardwalk that was remodeled in 2011 to be for pedestrians only. It is full of boutique shops, restaurants, and bars. You’ll also find numerous galleries along the way, but to get your dose of art, the Malecon itself is an open-air gallery full of beautiful sculptures in bronze, stone, and other durable materials.

40-min Detour Option : Make your way up to the Cerro de La Cruz lookout spot. If you make it all the way up, you’ll be rewarded with amazing views of the entire bay, the majestic Sierra Madre Mountains, and the rustic rooftops of downtown. The 360-degree panoramic view makes this one of the 5 best Puerto Vallarta hiking trails .

Dominating the neighborhood is the Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe, one of Puerto Vallarta’s most important religious and cultural attractions. The tower of the church is topped with a crown which is said to be a replica of the crown worn by Carlota, a Belgian princess who became Empress of Mexico in 1864.

Keep walking along the Malecon, past the amphitheater, and over the Cuale Island bridge.

Cuale River Island

The free walking tour continues to Isla Cuale. It’s an island in the Cuale river that is home to a park, a cultural center, a craft market, and several restaurants. Make sure to cross the wooden suspension footbridge to the market to buy all kinds of Mexican crafts and souvenirs. It is a charming island bordered by the flow of fresh water and a green blanket of green vegetation.

Make your way up the Cuale river all the way up to Gringo Gulch for some of the best views of the city. To get down to the Zona Romantica area, walk down the Puente Iguana which also has beautiful panoramic views.

This pedestrian bridge connects Cuauhtémoc Street with the Cuale River Island at the Gringo Gulch, offering stunning views of the mountains surrounding the Romantic Zone and the Cuale River.

Playa Los Muertos means ‘Beach of the Dead’, and the name comes from an old legend about a pirate battle that took place here.

Continue the Puerto Vallarta free walking tour by going south until you reach Los Muertos Pier , one of Puerto Vallarta’s most iconic landmarks. The views from the end of the pier are great so be sure and have your camera ready! Afterward, head to the fabulous town square of Zona Romantica, Lazaro Cardenas Park . It is full of intricate mosaic artwork and is a great spot for people-watching.

Also walk down Basilio Badillo Street in the heart of the Romantic Zone which is filled with art galleries, boutiques, restaurants, and bars. To finish off the Puerto Vallarta free walking tour, cool off at the local craft brewery, Los Muertos Brewing , with amazing beers and delicious pizzas.

The free walking tour map ends at the southern part of Los Muertos beach with the iconic Seahorse statue . This statue in Las Pilitas is actually the original one, sculpted by Rafael Zamarripa in 1960. After a storm swept it away into the sea, a larger replica was requested from the artist and it was placed on the Malecon, the first statue of many that are now part of an open-air exhibition along the seaside boardwalk. The original was then found, recovered, and you can see it there today, you can see that the concrete block is extra reinforced now and reinforced with iron to avoid it getting swept away again

Travel Tips For Puerto Vallarta

1. arriving: puerto vallarta airport tips.

Getting to Puerto Vallarta is easy as there’s an international airport ( Licenciado Gustavo Díaz Ordaz ) with daily flights to many cities in North America.

It’s not a big airport, so it doesn’t take long to get through once you arrive, especially if you’ve already cleared customs in another city in Mexico.

In fact, when I arrived in Puerto Vallarta, it only took me 15 minutes from the time the plane landed to collect my bags and get out of the airport.

The airport is conveniently located just 15 minutes from the city center, and there are several options for getting there.

Once you’ve got your luggage, you can either grab a taxi right outside the main airport doors (many people will ask you if you need one), take a public bus, or get an Uber.

And if you need to connect, there is free Wi-Fi in the airport.

Ubers are about half the price of a taxi, but they do not come to the airport terminal doors; you will have to walk five minutes.

When you exit the airport, turn left (walk to the end of the building), and turn left again. You will see a pedestrian bridge across the street. Walk across the bridge and catch an Uber from over there as this is the only place they pick you up. It should cost about $5-10 to get from the airport to most accommodations.

Alternatively, you can take a public bus. The station is right under the pedestrian bridge on the same side as the airport.

There are several busses that go into the various neighborhoods of Puerto Vallarta , which will be marked on the front of the bus.

If you aren’t sure, you can always ask the bus driver by saying the name of the area you are going to. The bus costs 50 cents.

2. US Travel To Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is a popular destination for travelers from the United States due to its close proximity, warm weather, amazing atmosphere, and an international airport that makes it easy to get to and from.

As a US citizen, you will automatically be given a six-month visa on arrival, making it a great place to work remotely if you want to extend your stay. In fact, it’s a popular place for creators to stay when trying to start a travel blog and make money .

There are direct flights from dozens of popular cities in the U.S. including Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, and San Francisco.

American Airlines, Delta, and Southwest all fly there as well as several other international airlines.

3. Travel Tips For Puerto Vallarta Safety

Safety is always a concern for visitors traveling to Mexico, but Puerto Vallarta is actually one of the safest destinations in the country.

Millions of tourists visit Puerto Vallarta every year with no problems. I’ve lived here for three months as a solo female traveler and have never felt scared or in danger.

This being said, I do have a few safety tips for Puerto Vallarta to share:

Like any city, petty theft does happen so you should be vigilant when walking with your belongings, especially at night.

Keep your phone or attractive electronics away when you’re wandering the cobblestone streets, and don’t leave them unattended at the beach. You might also invest in some pickpocket-proof garments to more easily avoid pickpockets .

Moreover, always protect yourself with travel insurance , as theft can happen anywhere.

As a solo female traveler, I try to avoid walking at night no matter where I am. Instead, I get Ubers — which are very affordable in Puerto Vallarta.

The Malecon , a beach boardwalk in the center of Puerto Vallarta, is safe to walk alone at night as it is always full of people and police.

During Covid-19, Puerto Vallarta received the Safe Travels Stamp from the World Travel & Tourism Council, which recognizes the ongoing implementation of strict safety measures in destinations around the world.

Here is one of the most important tips for travelers to Mexico :

5. Puerto Vallarta Weather

Puerto Vallarta has warm weather year-round, making it a perfect beach destination for those looking to escape the cold winters in the northern hemisphere.

Temperatures never get colder than 72°F, so you’ll be able to enjoy the beautiful beaches and ocean no matter what time of year you visit!

June is the hottest month of the year and the start of the rainy season which goes until October.

The rain typically only happens for a few hours in the afternoon or in the evening so you’ll still get lots of beach time even if you visit during the summer.

6. When To Visit Puerto Vallarta

The best time to visit Puerto Vallarta depends on your tolerance for heat and crowds. October to April is the high season which coincides with the most pleasant (driest) weather and whale-watching season.

Since this is right after the rainy season, it’s also ideal for hiking as there will be lush green scenery and full waterfalls. In fact, the destination offers some of the most beautiful hikes in the world , with this being the best time to take in local scenery at its most stunning.

The downside of visiting during the high season is that this is when you’ll find the biggest crowds and the highest prices on accommodation.

The weather starts to become what many would consider unpleasantly hot in June, so avoid traveling to Puerto Vallarta then then if you don’t like the heat.

Additionally, the summer coincides with the rainy season but can be a great time to get deals on accommodation and tours.

You could also time your trip to Puerto Vallarta to attend one of the city’s many events like Pride month in May or Día de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) in early November.

7. What To Know About Puerto Vallarta Travel

Now, there are a few things to know about Puerto Vallarta before traveling.

When planning a trip to Mexico , you’ll be happy to know that the country has some of the most relaxed entry protocols anywhere in the world during COVID-19 — so if you’re wondering “Can I travel to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico” the answer is very likely “yes!”.

You do not need a test to enter the country, although I always recommend it.

Infection rates are declining on the whole in Mexico, and in Puerto Vallarta, there are few restrictions.

At the time of writing, everything is open, there is no curfew, and for the most part, life feels normal here. You must wear a mask inside establishments, and some places take your temperature before entering.

Moreover, Puerto Vallarta is extremely welcoming to LGBTQ+ travelers. Zona Romantica is the gay neighborhood, and it’s filled with rainbow flags and gay clubs. There are lots of events for LGBTQ+ travelers, especially during Pride at the end of May.

You do not need to know Spanish to travel around Puerto Vallarta, but it’s always helpful to know a few key phrases like hello ( hola ), thank you ( gracias ), and how are you ( cómo estás? ).

This being said, don’t be nervous if you can’t speak Spanish; most locals speak English and are used to travelers who do not know Spanish.

8. Puerto Vallarta Hotels

There’s no shortage of amazing hotels to stay at in Puerto Vallarta. Whether you’re looking for an all-inclusive family resort or an LGBTQ+ friendly hotel, you’ll be able to find it in Puerto Vallarta.

The biggest resorts and hotels tend to be concentrated in the north and south neighborhoods of the city where you’ll find nicer beaches.

If you want to stay in a resort, some good areas are Conchas Chinas , the North Hotel Zone , and Marina Vallarta . These places are known for having some really great all-inclusive Mexico resorts as well as delicious vegan-friendly Mexico resorts .

If you prefer to stay in the heart of the city then book your accommodation in 5 de Diciembre , El Centro , or Zona Romantica .

From these neighborhoods, you’ll be able to walk to The Malecon where you can find restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. You won’t find as many all-inclusive resorts here but there are plenty of boutique hotels and cute Airbnbs to choose from.

In reality, it doesn’t really matter which part of the city you stay in, as getting around is easy.

9. Getting Around Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is not a huge city which makes it easy to get around.

In terms of the best way to travel in Puerto Vallarta , if you stay in Centro or Zona Romantica, you’ll be able to walk to bars, restaurants, and the beach easily.

Even if you stay in one of the neighborhoods a little further out like Conchas Chinas, you can still get around Puerto Vallarta cheaply by using the bus or ride-sharing apps.

There are buses that run all over the city and only cost 50 cents to get on.

Alternatively, you can take an Uber or inDriver (a local car ride app). A 20-minute Uber across town costs around $2.50-$5 depending on demand.

There are also taxis readily available on populated streets, but these are typically more expensive. Always remember to negotiate the price beforehand if you get a taxi!

Of course, you can also rent a car. While it’s not really necessary to have a car if you’re staying in and exploring Puerto Vallarta thanks to the many budget-friendly public transportation options, some travelers like to rent one if they’re doing a lot of day trips to traveling to other places in Mexico.

10. Puerto Vallarta Restaurants

No list of Puerto Vallarta travel tips would be complete without talking about the food.

Mexico is world-famous for its cuisine, and Puerto Vallarta is no exception to this.

Given that the city is right by the ocean, you can enjoy excellent quality seafood here with Mexican flavor. Some of the top restaurants are:

• Mezcal y Sal
• Barcelona Tapas
• The Blue Shrimp

The street food is also amazing here, so don’t be afraid to try it. There are taco stands on almost every corner where you can enjoy a filling meal for just a couple of dollars.

In terms of Puerto Vallarta money tips , this is a great way to save if you’re traveling on a budget.

Puerto Vallarta also has plenty of vegan and vegetarian restaurants to choose from. Check out Vegan Ramen , the Green Place , and Salud Super Food for healthy veggie-friendly options.

11. Things To Do In Puerto Vallarta

Although Puerto Vallarta is a city, one of the best things about it is the quick access to the ocean and mountains, making it a perfect place to go on outdoor adventures .

Some of the most popular things to do here include whale watching, scuba diving, snorkeling, jet-skiing, or simply relaxing by the beach and enjoying the gorgeous sunsets.

For the best diving, head to Los Arcos National Marine Park .

There are also a lot of hiking trails to explore around the city. One of my favorites is Los Arcos which leaves from Boca de Tomatlán to Las Animas Beach .

It takes two hours, passing by secluded beaches along the way you can stop and enjoy.

From Las Animas, you can grab a water taxi back to the city.

Another popular walk within the city is to the Mirador La Cruz del Cerro , an observation deck with some of the best views of the city.

Within the city, there are many fun things to do too.

Walking along The Malecon is the perfect way to spend an afternoon or evening just people watching and exploring the many restaurants and shops of Puerto Vallarta.

You can join a paid food or drink tour, and there are also free city walking tours and art walks that happen every Wednesday.

Additionally, Puerto Vallarta has lively nightlife with clubs that go into the early hours of the morning. Salsa dancing is very popular here!

13. Day Trips From Puerto Vallarta

Puerto Vallarta is an excellent base to explore surrounding places as fun day trips .

Sayulita and San Pancho are two up-and-coming beach towns in Mexico popular for surfing. Sayulita is notorious for its nightlife, and San Pancho is more relaxed.

From Boca de Tomatlán — which is a half an hour drive from Puerto Vallarta — you can get a taxi boat to many secluded beaches and small towns along the coast.

Yelapa is one of the most popular places to visit. This laid-back beach town is only accessible by boat or hiking trail, and there you can find many waterfalls to explore.

There’s also the charming mountain town of San Sebastian , an hour and a half drive away. It’s a great place to go hiking and cool off from the heat.

14. Solo Travel In Puerto Vallarta

Going on a vacation to Puerto Vallarta on your own? You’ll be happy to know that the city is one of the top solo female travel destinations for many.

It’s easy to make friends in Puerto Vallarta as a solo traveler. I found an amazing group of friends within two days of moving here that I’ve loved getting to know.

Staying at hostels is always a good way to meet people, but if you prefer to stay at an Airbnb or hotel, it’s still easy to meet other travelers.

Facebook groups are one of the most popular ways to connect with other travelers in Puerto Vallarta. Here are some of the best ones:
