MSC Splendida Debuts in South Africa

  • December 5, 2023

MSC Splendida at Jeddah Islamic Port

The MSC Splendida recently kicked off its first cruise season in South Africa.

After inaugurating the new Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal in Durban , the MSC Cruises vessel sailed on its first voyage from the country on Nov. 23, 2023.

Debuting in the region, the 133,500-ton vessel also became the largest ever to serve the local market in South Africa.

The MSC Splendida is set to offer a series of two- to 12-night cruises departing from Durban and Cape Town through early April.

The program features varied itineraries in South Africa, Mozambique and Namibia, such as Pomene, Portuguese Island and Walvis Bay.

In December, the 2009-built ship is also scheduled to offer a unique 12-night cruise to Mauritius and Réunion.

Celebrating the New Year, the voyage sails roundtrip from Durban and features a visit to Saint-Denis, in addition to an overnight stay in Port Louis.

Upon completing the deployment in Africa, the MSC Splendida is scheduled to return to Europe via a 27-night repositioning cruise to the Mediterranean.

Sailing from Cape Town to Genoa, in Italy, the one-way cruise also features visits to destinations in Mauritius, Cyprus, Italy and Greece, in addition to a full transit of the Suez Canal.

During the 2024 summer, the Splendida is scheduled to offer a series of nine-night cruises in the Eastern Mediterranean.

Joining the MSC Bellissima in the region, the 3,300-guest vessel then heads to Asia for a winter program in China.

Replacing its sister ship, the 2008-built MSC Fantasia is scheduled to debut in South Africa for the 2024-2025 season.

Part of MSC Cruises’ four-ship Fantasia Class, the MSC Splendida was built at the Chantiers de l’Atlantique shipyard in France.

Among its main features is the MSC Yacht Club suite enclave, as well as a selection of dining venues and entertainment spaces.

Offering superb winter sun, extraordinary scenery, amazing wildlife, a fascinating mix of culture, and producing some of the best wines in the world, it's easy to understand why South Africa has long been a popular destination for travellers from the UK, made all the more convenient by the direct flights and negligible time difference. These are the best cruises to South Africa to book now for 2023 and 2024.

There is an excellent choice of cruises to Southern Africa, usually leaving from Cape Town, with the chance to discover the South African cities of Port Elizabeth, East London and Durban, all gateways for national parks to spot wildlife including elephant, buffalo, rhino, lion and leopard, and learn about the intriguing local culture. Here are some of our favourites.

best-cruises-south-africa

Best for variety: Silversea

With a fleet of 13 superb ships it's no surprise that Silversea have a fantastic range of cruises that can be combined with a Garden Route tour, a trip on the Blue Train or Rovos Rail, a safari in Kruger National Park, or a visit to Victoria Falls and the Okavango Delta. Short cruise options, such as the 6 night Cape Town to Durban sailing departing 21 January 2024 can easily form part of a longer itinerary or simply be bookended by a few nights to discover Cape Town and safari from Durban, the capital of the KwaZulu-Natal province.

best-cruises-south-africa

Longer itineraries include two 15 night Cape Town round-trips departing 25 December 2023 and 23 January. For a more unusual option, the 23 March 2024 expedition sailing from Walvis Bay (reached via a private charter flight from Cape Town) to Port Elizabeth calls at the rarely visited Port Nolloth, on South Africa's remote Diamond Coast; Langebaan, the ornithological capital of South Africa; and Hermanus, one of the best places for whale watching in the world.

Best for overnight calls: Regent Seven Seas

Regent are familiar visitors to South Africa and their all-encompassing all-inclusive has proven to be particularly popular here particularly when their pre- or post-cruise land programmes are also included for free. This is exactly the case for the 6 December 2024 sailing which benefits from a choice of free 3-night pre- or post-cruise programmes. In addition to this time in Cape Town you'll enjoy overnight calls in Durban and Richards Bay (gateway to Zululand), as well as Walvis Bay providing maximum time for exploration.

Best newcomer: Explora Journeys

Combining the economic might of the shipping giant MSC with the advantage of being privately owned, Explora Journeys will bring alive the Aponte family's vision of luxury, without being answerable to shareholders solely concerned with profit. As such, expect a refinement of the luxury cruise experience aiming to attract a new generation of discerning luxury travellers.

biggest cruise in south africa

Itineraries, such as the two week 15 February 2025 Durban to Cape Town sailing, deliver plenty of overnights in port, in this instance Durban, Richards Bay, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town, combined with restful days at sea. Available excursions will include unique money-can't-buy (although purchasable) experiences and although details have only been released for their upcoming sailings there are certainly some choices which might raise an eyebrow or two (cliff diving anyone?).

Best value: Oceania

Oceania excel by offering appealing itineraries, superb dining, and an almost all-inclusive fare for extraordinary value. With their OLife Choice programme offering either some included shore excursions, a beverage package covering acholic drinks, or shipboard credit, you can tailor your package to suit your own needs. It also makes an attractive proposition for those tempted by the value of their upper suites.

best-cruises-south-africa

This is certainly the case on Nautica's 9 May 2024 South African Spotlight sailing, as the Penthouse Suites on this little 656-guest R-class vessel are already sold out. Thankfully space remains at the Concierge level as well as the balcony and ocean view staterooms, with fares starting at a fraction over £5,000 per person for the 12-night fly-cruise package.

From zanzibar to the zambezi, cape town to madagascar, these are the cruise lines and itineraries that take you further.

biggest cruise in south africa

T his vast continent, situated between the Atlantic and Indian Oceans and topped by the Mediterranean, offers a kaleidoscope of cruising opportunities. The wildlife is a huge draw, of course, and on an Africa cruise there will be ample opportunity to search for the Big Five on land and river safaris that visit big-name game parks and smaller reserves. Plump for a voyage that also takes in the striking beaches of the Seychelles and Mauritius to bookend your cruise with some R&R.

The Norwegian Spirit

1. Norwegian Cruise Line

This line cruises to southern Africa on the 2,402 passenger Norwegian Jade. Notable shore excursions on round-trip Cape Town sailings include a game drive by coach or Jeep through Addo Elephant Park, close to Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), and a stop at Walvis (Whale) Bay. The deep-water harbour by the Namib Desert is renowned for migrating and resident birdlife with more than 150 species recorded. Head inland to Dune 7, Namibia’s highest dune at a lofty 383m, to hike and sandboard.

2. Silversea

It’s not all about spotting the Big Five with Silversea. Their African itineraries include both regular sailings and exhilarating expedition cruises; our favourite is a voyage from Cape Town to Zanzibar, sailing up the east coast via Madagascar. You’ll also spend three days in the Aldabra coral atoll in the Seychelles, which is a Unesco marine world heritage site home to two thirds of the world’s population of giant tortoises and mangrove forests filled with colonies of great frigate birds.

CroisiEurope’s African Dream

3. CroisiEurope

Set sail on an intimate inland cruise that includes a stay in a lodge on a lush private island, a safari cruise on the Chobe River and a sailing on Lake Kariba. The latter is the world’s largest man-made lake, formed by damming the Zambezi River, and CroisiEurope has two 16-passenger vessels that navigate the extraordinary waterscape with its semi-submerged forest of petrified trees. A small plane takes guests onwards to another lodge to witness the cascading spectacle of Victoria Falls, with the option to soar over the waterfalls by helicopter.

Wildlife and winelands come to the fore in Azamara’s round-trip voyage from Cape Town to Maputo in Mozambique. Along the way discover the pristine white sand beaches and dunes of the Sunshine and Wild Coasts. Take advantage of a late-night stay in Richards Bay to go on safari at Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park which is renowned for its white rhino conservation programme. Spend two more days in Cape Town at the end of the sailing to sip and savour wines from world-famous vineyards.

Table Mountain: Cunard offers shore excursions at every port (Getty Images)

In 2023 Cunard celebrates 100 years of grand world voyages with a roster of bucket list sailings. The most tempting option pairs Africa with Mauritius and Madagascar. You’ll sail to Durban, which lies on the edge of the KwaZulu-Natal province, and is the springboard for tours inland that take in the sweeping savannas as well as local customs, music and dancing at local villages. Multiple shore excursions are offered at every port with the chance to peer down on Cape Town from its most majestic natural monument flat-topped Table Mountain.

An AmaWaterways cruise offers great wildlife spotting opportunities (Getty Images)

6. AmaWaterways

Unlike a typical river sailing travelling from port to port, the focus of a cruise along the Chobe on the 28-passenger Zambezi Queen is game viewing. The eco-friendly vessel offers unparalleled spotting opportunities from its public areas and river-facing cabins; you could wake up to see an elephant drinking from the riverbank or a sea eagle taking flight. Four-night cruises are combined with land tours with options including a stay at the Greater Kruger National Park, a private reserve close to its big-name counterpart.

The pool deck on Oceania’s Insignia

Oceania is the cruise line to book with if variety is high on your agenda. You’ll find each of their ports are carefully chosen for the multitude of opportunities they offer — be it touring one of South Africa’s largest pineapple farms in Richards Bay to visiting a sustainable farming project outside Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) or taking an exhilarating off-road vehicle ride into the Namib Desert. There’s also the chance to explore destinations independently and at your own pace on a shore excursion with a private car and driver.

Regent Seven Seas sails for Cape Town via West African capitals

8. Regent Seven Seas Cruises

This is a cruise line that stands out for its authentic excursions — one being the chance to experience genuine rituals at a mesmerising local ceremony in Sanguera, located just outside of Togo’s capital, Lomé. Itineraries feature a sailing bound for Cape Town which calls at the West African capitals of Dakar in Senegal and Banjul in Gambia. Land programmes can also be added to visit Kruger National Park, South Africa’s largest — and arguably most impressive — game reserve.

Best suited to 16+ Price £££ Family-friendly N

9. Seabourn

Sailings to this vast continent lend themselves to longer itineraries. Voyages with all-inclusive small-ship luxury line Seabourn include a 30-day cruise around Africa’s Atlantic coast to the Canaries . You’ll cruise across the equator, before visiting Cotonou in Benin and visiting the stilt-village of Ganvie in Lake Nokoue — an offshore community where residents live much of their lives either on boats or in their homes without touching dry land. The 458-passenger Seabourn Sojourn also visits Accra, a city that pulses with Ghanaian music at every corner.

Best suited to 21+ Price £££ Family-friendly N

Hapag-Lloyd’s Sansibar

10. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Sail to Cape Town via the Seychelles and Madagascar and you’ll have the chance to visit the namesake inhabitants of Lemur Island and Nosy Komba, known mostly for its dolphins and turtles. Wildlife continues to abound at Hluhluwe-Imfolozi Park; one of the oldest nature reserves in South Africa and home to leopards, lions, zebras and giraffes, as well as the endangered black rhino. International cruises, where the onboard language is English and German, are available on the 500-passenger Europa 2, which offers family cabins handily kitted-out with games and toys.

Best suited to 5+ Price £££ Family-friendly Y

11. Costa Cruises

Push the boat out in Italian style on one of Costa’s epic round-the-world sailings of up to 128 days that cover Southern Africa. Expect to call at Richards Bay, one of the biggest port in South Africa; Durban ; Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth); and Walvis Bay. Cruises on the 2,826-passenger Costa Deliziosa are particularly family-friendly; cabins sleep up to four, there are babysitting services and a children’s club for youngsters from the age of three. Adult attractions include the Aperol Spritz bar — and everyone loves the pizzeria.

Best suited to 6 months+ Price £ Family-friendly Y

12. MSC Cruises

For a taste of what this region has to offer, MSC Cruises has a five-night sailing to and from Cape Town on one of its smaller ships, the 1,960-passenger MSC Sinfonia. There are two days in Namibia’s Walvis Bay where the highlight is the natural lagoon populated by an abundance of seabirds, including flamingos and pelicans which are joined each year by thousands of migratory birds. Along the coast road is the Atlantic harbour town of Swakopmund where the adventurous can try quad biking, dune buggy racing and sandboarding.

Marvel at Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden - Cape Town

Imagine this: 523 hectares of green just outside Cape Town, with carefully arranged gardens and greenhouses showcasing the floral treasures of southern Africa , with everything from ferns to rare orchids; baobabs to succulents. Don't miss the garden's most famous areas: the Gondwana Garden for living-fossil plants, the Fragrance Garden, The Dell (the oldest part of the park), and the famous Camphor Avenue. Thanks to various paths, you can also explore the uncultivated areas of the park: the primal forest bordering Table Mountain.

Visit Robben Island - Cape Town

Visit Robben Island - Cape Town

This is surely one of the most emotional historic sites in South Africa. For four centuries, Robben Island off Cape Town was used as a leper colony, quarantine station, psychiatric centre and prison. From 1961, the authorities detained prisoners serving long sentences here, including political opponents of the African National Congress (ANC). The poet Dennis Brutus and two of the country's future presidents, Jacob Zuma and Nelson Mandela , were incarcerated here. The latter two stayed on the island for 10 and 17 years respectively. Today, a visit to Robben Island includes a tour of the site, the limestone quarry used for hard labour, the high-security area and Mandela's cell. Having been made a museum in 1997, the prison became a UNESCO World Heritage Site two years later. Certain former political prisoners offer guided tours.

Enjoy the view from Table Mountain - Cape Town

A key part of Cape Town's identity, Table Mountain is a must-see on any trip to South Africa. Whether you go up on foot or take the panoramic cable car offering 360° views, the climb is worth it. At the flat top, the reason for the mountain's name becomes even clearer. With its 1,086 m peak, Table Mountain provides excellent views over the bay and city below.

Shakaland cultural village provides a unique opportunity to familiarise yourself with Zulu culture. It focuses on the period between the 18th and 19th centuries, when King Shaka founded the Zulu kingdom. On the menu: traditional dances, healing ceremony reconstruction, spear and shield making, daily jobs and local crafts, all of which teach visitors about this unique culture whose name comes from the expression "that comes from the heavens".

Go on safari in Pumba Reserve - Port Elizabeth

Go on safari in Pumba Reserve - Port Elizabeth

Pumba Reserve is one of the best-loved reserves in South Africa. It stands out from other protected parks because of its lake and rare white lions . The lake, bordered by tall grass, is home to hundreds of waterfowl who mingle with the large animals from the plains. White lions rub shoulders with the famous Big Five : lions, leopards, elephants, buffalo and black rhinos. Giraffes, warthogs, zebras, cheetahs, hyenas and hippos complete the incredibly diverse line-up you can see on tours here with experienced rangers .

Meet African elephants - Port Elizabeth

Meet African elephants - Port Elizabeth

Of South Africa's 20 famous national parks, Addo Elephant National Park is unique: it is for African elephants . Founded in 1931 to hold 11 of these giants, it now has 450. The environment conducive to nature not only allows visitors to see the pachyderms in their natural habitat, but also to glimpse a range of other species. The park has a large marine reserve that is home to many birds and is the world's biggest Cape gannet colony and the second biggest African penguin population. Addo Elephant National Park is also the only one of its kind as it extends the Big Five to the Big Seven : whales and great white sharks can appear from time to time!

Sail into the middle of the hippos - Lake St Lucia

Sail into the middle of the hippos - Lake St Lucia

Lake St Lucia is a special place in South Africa where you can meet some 800 hippos...and 2,000 Nile crocodiles who have made their home here in iSimangaliso Wetland Park : a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999. Going on a cruise round the lake and estuary offers a great opportunity to see hippos and crocodiles in their natural environment, as well as over 520 bird species and other animals in the middle of the mangroves and other marshes that make up this rich ecosystem . Nelson Mandela said this of the park: " iSimangaliso must be the only place on the globe where the world's oldest land mammal (the rhinoceros) and the world's biggest terrestrial mammal (the African elephant) share an ecosystem with the world's oldest fish (the coelacanth) and the world's biggest marine mammal (the whale). " Convinced yet?

Go to the end of Africa - Cape Town

Go to the end of Africa - Cape Town

There is something moving about being at the Cape of Good Hope at the very edge of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans meet: a Cape symbolising a huge challenge for so many navigators. This is even more the case because the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve protects this unique environment at the confluence between two ecosystems. Covering 7,750 hectares, it is home to much flora and fauna, and to steep cliffs that are among the biggest in South Africa. Visitors can see ostriches, common elands, baboons and antelopes here. To enjoy the famous African penguins , head to Boulders Beach, where a colony of some 2,000 individuals has set up home.

Treat yourself to a safari in Kruger Park

Treat yourself to a safari in Kruger Park

It's impossible to visit South Africa without going to the "star" animal reserve: Kruger National Park . Located in the north-east of the country and open to the public since 1926, this is one of the oldest reserves in the world and the biggest in the country . It covers 20,000 km2, with humans mere guests among the wild fauna that goes about its business in its natural environment. The park contains 147 mammal species, 505 bird species, 116 reptile species, 49 fish species and almost 2,000 plant species. The Big Five (lions, elephants, leopards, rhinos and buffalo) are obviously what attract visitors' attention. However, it is just as amazing to see giraffes, zebras, hyenas, hippos, warthogs and impalas.

Extra: the Victoria Falls - Zimbabwe/Zambia

Extra: the Victoria Falls - Zimbabwe/Zambia

Known by the local population for centuries as Mosi-oa-Tunya ("the smoke that thunders"), the Victoria Falls were renamed in honour of the UK's Queen Victoria when they were discovered by the Scottish explorer David Livingstone in 1855. The natural border between Zimbabwe and Zambia , they are 1,700 metres wide and plunge down into the chasm (108 metres at its deepest point) at 9,100 m3 per second in the rainy season. This is one of the biggest waterfalls in the world, alongside the Niagara Falls between Canada and the USA, and the Iguazu Falls between Argentina and Brazil. Tip : when travelling in South Africa, it's easy to reach the Victoria Falls by plane.

Dos. When the Zulu people eat, they traditionally turn their spoons over to show they would like some more food. If a spoon is the usual way up, this means the diner is full. Don'ts. You shouldn't get angry if someone does a kind of whistle or clicks their tongue at you while you're in the street. This is considered to be politer than saying "Excuse me".

Unique features

Fynbos (meaning "fine-leaved plant" in Afrikaans) is a type of bush with colourful flowers that is only found in South Africa's Cape Province. It grows in a narrow region with a Mediterranean climate that helps it flourish. There are several thousand different plants, which have an amazing ability to regenerate. In 2006, a wildfire destroyed vast swathes of fynbos. A few months later, 70 new species were counted up.

Essential phrases

To communicate with the South Africans, you need to speak English. However, Zulu and Afrikaans are also spoken in some communities. Long considered the language of violent colonists, Afrikaans is now being used to redefine a culture that is more open to the world: Hello / Good evening: Hallo Goodbye: Totsiens Welcome: Welkom Excuse me: Ekskuus Thank you: Dankie Yes / No: Ja / nee How are you?: Hoe is jy? Very well, thank you, and you?: Baie goed, dankie, en jy? My name is...: My naam is...

South African cuisine has Dutch, British, Malay and French influences. There are lots of stews that are rich in flavour. Imported by the Dutch, potjiekos is made by simmering minced meat (pork, beef or lamb), cabbage, carrots and onions in a sweet wine or beer stock for several hours. Chakalaka , a spicy stew containing vegetables and pulses (haricot beans, broad beans, tomatoes and onions), is served as a thick soup. One of the most popular dishes is biltong : slices of marinated, dried meat. This snack is found everywhere. Worker's favourite bunny chow is particularly enjoyed in Durban, where it was introduced by the Indian community. It consists of a hollowed-out loaf of bread that has been filled with curry.

Myths & legends

Some days, the top of Table Mountain overlooking Cape Town is covered with white cloud. When this happens, they say the "tablecloth is on". Legend has it that this fleecy cloud is the result of a particular contest . It is said that an old Dutch pirate called Jan Van Hunks retired on Table Mountain to enjoy the fantastic views of the surrounding area. One day, a stranger visited with a challenge : to smoke more than him. The two men set about puffing on their pipes, creating a thick cloud around the mountain. It eventually turned out that the stranger was in fact a demon. In cloudy weather, locals say that the two rivals have started up their contest again.

In the spotlight

Adorable African penguins are one of the main attractions on Boulders Beach next to Cape Town. Unfortunately, the species is now classed as "endangered", while it was only "vulnerable" in 2010. The African penguin population (also found in Namibia) has reduced from 160,000 in 1970 to 50,000 today. Why? Overfishing has deprived them of food, and the water has warmed up. To try and help the population build back up, a researcher from the University of the Western Cape has had the idea of using medically-assisted procreation (MAP). Patrick Siyambulela Mafunda has introduced a cryo-preservation procedure and hopes to soon be able to carry out in-vitro fertilisation to stop the species dying out. Watch this space.

Books. The writings of the 1991-Nobel-Prize-winning South African author Nadine Gordimer have always reflected her commitment to fighting apartheid. In July's People (1981), she imagines the black population revolting against the unfair system run by the whites, plunging Johannesburg into chaos. The Smales family (father, mother and two children) decide to flee with their servant, July, to her home village. Although the family don't support apartheid's conservative ideas, they realise that their relationship with July, which they believed to be healthy, wasn't truly equal. The roles are gradually reversed, with the bosses coming to depend on their employee. This couple's demise represents the demise of white supremacist South Africa, and is depicted by a powerful yet subtle narrative.

Music. Several famous jazz artists have made an impact on South African music, like Hugh Masekala: a trumpeter who recorded the first disc in the country. Abdullah Ibrahim, Pops Mohamed and The Mahotella Queens are also among the artists who have showcased South Africa internationally.

Film. Inspired by Caryl Férey's novel, Zulu is a crime film featuring a country where segregation has left painful wounds. The investigation, inspired by Project Coast (the apartheid regime's chemical and biological weapons programme), confronts South Africa with its dark history.

Facts and figures

South Africa has 11 official languages . While English is used for business, over 30% of people speak Afrikaans and the Zulu language (isiZulu) is spoken by 25%. isiXhosa, SiSwati, isiNdebele, Northern Sotho, Sesotho, Setswana, Xitsonga and Tshivenda also exist. According to Section 6 of the country's constitution, it is also important to promote the 11 languages spoken by other communities in the country: German, Greek, Gujarati, Hindi, Portuguese, Tamil, Telugu, Urdu, Arabic, Hebrew and Sanskrit.

Rivierawill also take guests to smaller, more niche ports across the globe, stopping at Antsiranana in Madagascar, Hambantota in Sri Lanka, Sao Tome and Lome in Togo. Guests will have the opportunity to delve deeper into the natural wonders and local cultures of these destinations with more than 400 shore excursions to choose from.

The jewel of these itineraries is a 59-day Grand Voyage which offers guests the opportunity to explore truly off-the-beaten path ports across Africa and Asia on a voyage sailing from Barcelona and calling in the Canary Islands, before heading down the western coast of Africa.

West African ports of call include Senegal, Gambia, Ghana and an overnight stay in Walvis Bay, Namibia.

At the journey’s most southern point, guests will enjoy an overnight stay in Cape Town before heading up the eastern coast via Madagascar, for an overnight stay in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania; and then across to the Seychelles, Maldives, Thailand, Malaysia, before the journey culminates in an overnight stay in Singapore.

“These longer, destination-immersive voyages offer curious, well-travelled guests the chance to explore some of the most off-the-beaten-path ports in the world, all from the elegant surroundings of Riviera,” said Frank A Del Rio, President of Oceania Cruises.

“Sailing from Europe to Asia, via both coasts of Africa, is a true bucket list journey, combining iconic cities and unknown gems, with our incredible onboard service and the best value in luxury cruising, these voyages are hard to resist,” he added.

10 Major Cruise Ports in Africa

The African continent is a melting pot of cultures, traditions, and ethnicities. Here, you can see nature in its best and most pristine form. From the majestic African elephants to penguins and lemurs, Africa offers one of the best wildlife excursions. It also boasts natural white sand beaches, calming resorts, and beautiful scenery.

Africa is enclosed by the Atlantic and Indian oceans and the Mediterranean Sea. Hence, many cruise ships call on numerous ports allowing travelers to explore the continent. One can go to the African Gold coast or the tropical Verde Islands. Southwestern Africa is known for the plains and plateaus in Namibia, the Kalahari desert, the eastern tropical forests, historic plantations, and much more.

Mentioned below are 10 major Cruise ports in Africa.

1. Port of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Dar es Salaam is the most visited tourist spot in Tanzania. It has a strong economy based on tourism and shipping. It is the biggest and richest city in Tanzania, boasting enormous cultural diversity. It was once a tiny fishing village, established by the Sultan of Zanzibar in the 19th century; however, today, it is a developed city with modern amenities and a leading center of Fashion, Arts, Music, and films in Africa.

Dar es Salaam is a busy commercial and trade hub. It is also the second busiest port in East Africa, handling most African cargo and over a million cruise passengers. Cruise ships dock in different berths as the port does not yet have a dedicated cruise terminal. However, talks are ongoing for constructing one by the end of this decade.

Port of Dar es Salaam

Tourists can experience the untainted indigenous African culture in Dar es Salaam. The city has an open-air museum village depicting the traditional way of living. It has 16 huts, and tourists can try their hand at weaving, making pottery, and carving. One can visit Mbudya island, observe the fishing community, relax on the beaches, or watch dolphins in the Marine Reserve.

Nature lovers must visit the Udzungwa Mountains National Park, famous for its closed-canopy forests with over 400 fauna and 2500 plant species. It is ideal for camping and trekking.

2. Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Port Elizabeth is an industrial city between Cape Town and Durban within Nelson Mandela Bay. It is the third busiest port in Africa and the fifth largest city in South Africa. About 57 cruise itineraries featured the city as a port of call in 2019. Port Elizabeth lacks a proper cruise terminal, and ships dock at a commercial quay in the small harbor.

It is home to the Alexandria Dune fields, the largest in the southern hemisphere. It is also believed that Port Elizabeth was not named after the British Queen but the wife of Rufane Donkin, the Governor of Cape Colony, in 1820.

Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth has witnessed considerable modernization; however, the historic streets and victorian buildings are reminiscent of its colonial past. It has many plantations and art museums as well. One such is the Red Location Museum of People’s Struggle. There are several historical attractions like the Donkin Heritage Trail. The most famous attraction is Addo Elephant Park.

Holidaymakers can also enjoy the beaches of Humewood and Summerstrand. Many bars and local restaurants sell authentic food at affordable rates.

3. Port of Casablanca, Morocco

Casablanca is the most important port in Morocco. It is also a regional trade center and a popular African cruise destination. Facing the vast Atlantic Ocean, the port is an open roadstead, capable of accommodating one cruise ship at a time. Rabat, the capital city, is just 90 kilometers east of Casablanca.

After disembarking, a shuttle bus takes the passengers to the exit gate. The port is close to the Central Market, abundant in local foods and handmade goods. People can visit Isesco Park, a visual treat with blooming flowers and crystal clear ponds. Église Notre-Dame de Lourdes is a 1954 Catholic church with marvelous frescos and tainted glass windows.

Port of Casablanca

An excursion to Rabat would enable you to see the Hasan Mosque built in 1986, the Mausoleum of Mohammed V, and the Kasbah of the Oudayas. Old Medina takes you back in time. The souk runs along the city’s ancient fortifications and hosts 18th-century buildings and residential houses.

4. Tolanaro Port, Madagascar

Port of Tolanaro, earlier known as Fort Dauphin, is located on the southeastern coastline of Madagascar, facing the Indian Ocean. It is the Tolanaro district’s and Anosy region’s capital, housing around 50,000 people. It is the oldest town in the country and a vital trade and commerce route since the 15th century, when the first French settlement was set up.

Large cruise ships anchor away from the island. Passengers are transferred ashore by tender boats. Steep and lush green mountains enclose the town, and it experiences drier weather. Tourists love its beaches and turquoise waters.

Tolanaro Port

The Nahampoana Reserve is known for Lemurs, gardens, and beautiful mountains. The Lokaro beach is best for camping and relaxing. Parc National d’Andohahela offers mountaineering and trekking excursions on its beaten paths amidst the rainforests.

5. Port of Dakar, Senegal

Dakar is the principal seaport of Senegal, a country in West Africa. Senegal was once a French Overseas territory that attained independence in 1960. The port is located on the Cape Verde Peninsula, the westernmost point of the African continent.

Cruise ships dock at the Mole 1 terminal at Dakar cruise port. The city center is approximately a kilometer from the port. One can get taxis or get onto a bus to explore the city. However, crime rates are high in Senegal, and pick-pockets are common. So, booking a cab with a reliable and reputed agency is advised beforehand.

Port of Dakar

In 2020, DP World entered into agreements with the country’s government to construct a new port facility 50 kilometers from the existing port. The 600-hectare new port at Ndayane would be used as a commercial port and a cruise terminal, strengthening the country’s maritime infrastructure.

6. Port of Mombasa, Kenya

The 11 million USD Cruise terminal at Mombasa was completed in June 2021 but has witnessed low traffic due to covid restrictions. It is intended to make the coastal city an attractive cruise destination and boost the tourism industry, contributing around 4.5 percent to the Kenyan economy.

Situated at berth 1 of Mombasa port, the cruise facility has duty-free shops, conference halls, and seating areas for 2000 people. It is envisaged that with this terminal, Kenya could compete with South African cruise terminals, Mauritius, Cape Verde, and Seychelles.

Port of Mombasa

A recent survey conducted by Tourism and Transport Consult International regarding Kenya’s cruise potential revealed that the nation could easily attract over 14,500 tourists annually.

Also, Kenya is the third most popular cruise destination in Sub-Saharan Africa, after South Africa and Nigeria. Thanks to its beautiful coastline, numerous exotic islands, clean beaches, indigenous communities living in harmony with nature, and wildlife reserves on the East African Indian Ocean coastline, it sees thousands of tourists.

7. High-Impact Cruise Boarding Terminal, Nigeria

The boarding terminal is a joint venture between Solution Media and Infotech Limited, owners of Nigeria’s biggest amusement park, Hi-Impact Planet, and the country’s first HD TV station.

The luxury cruise line is the latest edition for the family. It is a result of careful market research and planning, catering to the nation’s entertainment industry, especially the tourism sector of Africa. The cruise terminal is a modern facility welcoming cruises and yachts. One can organize many formal and informal events onboard by booking impact cruises.

High-Impact Cruise Boarding Terminal

The Hi-Impact Cruise terminal has a luxurious cruise lounge and a classy waterfront venue at the boarding terminal for accommodating guests. The HIC Lounge is ideal for weddings, parties, anniversaries, and corporate events.

The cruise line guarantees all its guests a fantastic nightlife and party experience. One can enjoy exotic cocktails, great food, and fine musical performances every weekend. Sports lovers can watch exciting games in HD. The cruise ship has something for everyone. Regular cruises arrive every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

8. Port Said, Egypt

Port Said is one of the busiest container ports in the world; however, its cruise terminal is also renowned for its advanced features and reliable services. Most cruises commence with overnight hotel stays in Cairo for two to three days. The cruise package includes the domestic flight ticket to Aswan for embarking on the Nile o Lake Nasser Cruises ship. The Nile part from Aswan to Luxor is followed by the flight to Abu Simel for embarking on the Lake Nasser ship.

Port Said

The cruise terminal serves Cairo, the capital city and one of Africa’s biggest and most developed cities and the Middle East. One of the world’s most densely populated cities lying on the Nile, it is famous for its rich history, fabulous medieval Islamic architecture, ancient pyramids, bazaars, old town, and the Egyptian Museum housing countless artifacts and mummies.

9. Port of Maputo, Mozambique

The Maputo Cruise Port lies along the southeastern coast of Africa facing the Indian Ocean. It is the largest city and the capital of Mozambique, known for colonial architecture and white sand beaches. Maputo attained independence in 1976 and was called Lourenco Marques, named after a Portuguese sailor who contributed to developing trade and fortifications in the city.

Maputo is an important commercial center; tourists can explore a lot, despite its hot and dry weather. The Feira de Artesanato and Flôres e Gastronomia de Maputo are known for local handicrafts and delicious food.  The Church of San Antonio de la Polana was built in 1962. It is a fine example of modern architecture, designed like an upside-down flower with stained glass windows. The fortress of Maputo contains the remains of the last emperor of the Gaza Empire, Ngungunhane. Animal lovers must visit the Maputo Elephant Reserve located on Maputo Bay.

Port of Maputo

Cruise ships anchor at different positions in the harbor, depending on their size. Passengers are transported onshore through tender boats.

10. Port of Cape Town, South Africa

Cape Town boasts one of the most stunning harbors in the world. It spans 400 square kilometers in Table Bay and hosts significant cruise lines, including MSC, NCL-Norwegian Line, Crystal Silversea, etc. The cruise port is 220 kilometers from Cape Agulhas, strategically located amidst the Dutch East Indies and Europe. Its advantageous position made it the most influential African port in the 17th century.

It is one of the world’s most attractive cruise ports of call. Smaller ships dock in the Victoria and Alfred Basins, while larger cruise vessels are received at the Duncan dock, which contains many multipurpose terminals, a repair quay, and a dry dock.

Port of Cape Town

Work for constructing a new cruise terminal commenced in July 2015. Created by Transnet National Ports Authority, it cost 15 million US dollars. Major attractions and landmarks include Table Mountain, Robben Island, Boulders Beach, Cape Whale Coast, etc.

Israel-Gaza latest: Israeli fighter jet hits West Bank in deadly strike; aid pier off Gaza coast 'not enough'

An Israeli fighter jet has struck the West Bank. Palestinian authorities say at least one person has been killed. Meanwhile, the bodies of three hostages have been recovered.

That's all for this evening, but if you're just catching up, here is a recap of the key developments.

  • An Israeli fighter jet struck a refugee camp in the West Bank, killing at least one person and injuring eight;
  • The bodies of three Israeli hostages were recovered from Gaza;
  • An investigation was launched after a 450kg bomb fell from an Israeli fighter jet into an Israeli town;
  • Spain banned ships carrying weapons for Israel from docking at its ports;
  • Dozens of Israeli protesters in the West Bank attacked a truck in an apparent attempt to prevent aid from reaching Gaza, beating its driver and setting it on fire.

A group of US medical workers trapped at a hospital in Gaza have now left the territory, the White House says.

American doctors providing care in Gaza were unable to leave after Israel closed the Rafah border crossing.

Among them were 10 from the US-based Palestinian American Medical Association, who had intended to leave after a two-week mission at the European Hospital in Khan Younis.

Today, 17 American doctors and healthcare workers, out of a total of 20, left Gaza, White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said.

"I can assure you that any of them that wanted to leave are out," Mr Kirby said.

Three of the doctors chose not to depart Gaza, a source familiar with the situation said.

The Palestinian American Medical Association reported on Wednesday that its team of 19 healthcare professionals, including 10 Americans, had been denied exit from Gaza

Israel seized and closed the Rafah border crossing between Gaza and Egypt on 7 May.

The number of people injured by an Israeli airstrike in the West Bank has risen to eight, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

They are in a stable condition and receiving treatment at hospitals, it said.

As we reported in our last post, at least one person has been killed by the attack on Jenin refugee camp.

Residents of the camp said a house was targeted.

Unlike Gaza, such a strike is a rarity in the West Bank, which is run by the Palestinian Authority, not Hamas.

The Israeli military says a fighter jet has carried out a strike in Jenin in the West Bank.

One person was killed and two injured, the Palestinian health ministry said.

While Palestinians live in both Gaza and the West Bank, the territories are controlled by distinct groups.

Hamas has ruled over Gaza since seizing control in 2007 following a brief civil war with the Palestinian Authority.

The West Bank, meanwhile, is still run by the Palestinian Authority, headed by president Mahmoud Abbas.

By Mark Stone , US correspondent

A three-year-old Palestinian girl with an ultra-rare genetic condition has been forced backwards in her quest to leave Gaza for life-saving treatment.

Julia Abu Zeiter, whose story is being followed by Sky News, was moved with her family from a tent in the southern city of Rafah and relocated to a supposedly safer zone to the north and further away from the border they had hoped to cross.

Speaking to Sky News, her mother Maha said: "We were going through the travel procedures to leave Gaza. When the time for us to travel through Rafah crossing got close, the Israelis occupied the crossing, and they told us they want to invade Rafah."

She added: "I was between two fires, not knowing where to go. Do I go try to travel to treat my daughter or do I flee to another place?"

Israel has assured the US they are willing to continue discussions before making any major decisions on plans to assault Rafah, a US official has said.

White House national security spokesperson John Kirby said national security adviser Jake Sullivan will raise the issue on a visit to Israel to meet Benjamin Netanyahu.

Mr Sullivan will stress the need to go after Hamas in a targeted way, not with a full-scale assault on the southern city, Mr Kirby said.

He said it was important that the Rafah crossing was opened immediately.

The Israeli military seized control of the crossing between  Gaza and Egypt earlier this month.

Hamas says the US-built aid pier off Gaza's coast is no alternative to opening all land crossings under Palestinian supervision.

It added that they reject any military presence on Palestinian land.

Trucks carrying aid rolled across the pier today for the first time in an operation the US says will scale up to 150 truckloads a day.

But Gaza is already on the brink of famine, according to international aid organisations.

Aid groups also say land crossings are much more effective, and at least 500 trucks a day are required to meet the basic needs of the population.

Israeli restrictions on border crossings and heavy fighting have hindered the delivery of food and other supplies.

An investigation has been launched after a 450kg bomb fell from an Israeli fighter jet into an Israeli town this morning, according to reports.

Images showed the munition landed close to homes in Yated.

The Israeli military said it was intended for Rafah and described the incident as "unusual", reported the Times of Israel.

"Air Force technical teams arrived at the scene and began an in-depth investigation of the incident."

The Rafah strike was carried out moments later, the military said.

Israeli strikes on Lebanon have killed at least five people including Lebanese militants, Hamas fighters and Syrian civilians, security sources told Reuters.

A series of strikes on a coastal town further north than the usual conflict area killed a Hezbollah member as well as two Syrian civilians, the security sources said.

They said a separate Israeli strike on Majdal Anjar, on Lebanon's eastern border with Syria, killed two Hamas fighters.

Israel and Hezbollah have been exchanging fire across Lebanon's southern border for seven months in parallel with the Gaza war, but it has ramped up in recent days.

There was no immediate comment from the Israeli military.

The recovery of the bodies of three hostages from Gaza is a "painful reminder" of those who are still in captivity, says a member of the Hostages and Missing Families Forum.

Professor Hagai Levine said over the last day, rumours circulating about which bodies had been returned to Israel were "very painful for the families" of all the captives.

It was important to bring home the bodies of hostages to give their families closure, he said.

"We do not lose hope. We are preparing for the return of the hostages that are alive," he said.

"As long as we promote a solution to release the hostages, it will also help to prevent further bloodshed in Gaza."

Turning to the approach the Israeli government has taken, Mr Levine said the government "is not representing well the desires of the public".

"There is a majority in Israel that believe that we should now promote regional agreements and together with the moderate countries, not the extremists, we should kick out Hamas... and replace them with another kind of government.

"This could really bring peace and prosperity to the Palestinians and to Israelis and to the entire region and we feel that the government is not doing enough."
