1. Charlotte

8. Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens

This structure dates back to the colonial era. The Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens function as a museum and give visitors the chance to see the Georgian architecture as they experience how the locals lived their lives in pre-revolutionary Wilmington.

The museum occupies an area of 0.7 acres and houses antiques from the 18th and 19th Centuries. The gardens feature a rose garden, medicinal garden, kitchen garden, and an orchard with pomegranate and fig trees.

Of all the houses that were built here in the 1770’s, only three have survived. The Burgwin-Wright House is the only one open to the public. This house was constructed for John Burgwin – a government official, planter, and merchant.

9. Castle Hayne

Castle Hayne is located in the northwestern end of Wilmington. Tourists come here to learn about the rich history of this town that is named after Captain Roger Haynes.

The captain bought the 1000-acre piece of land and recruited foreign immigrants to till the land. At some point before the start of WWII, Castle Hayne was the largest fresh-cut flower producer in the United States.

Castle Hayne sits outside the city limits and is only a short drive from Wilmington; this makes the area a great destination for a day trip.

10. Battleship NC

The Battleship is named as one of the best museum ships in the world. Its construction started in 1937 and ended in 1940. Through her many battles, this ship earned 15 battle stars – only 10 men were lost in action.

In 1942, after the ship was commissioned, it became the first among ten others that joined the American fleet during WWII. While she still serviced, the ship carried 144 officers, 2,190 military members, and 100 marines. The ship was decommissioned five years later, in 1947.

Visitors are allowed to climb into this ship that tells the story of the Marines’ life on board. Take a tour around to see the pictures and antiques on display that serve as a memorial for the 11,000 people who died during the war.

11. Poplar Grove Plantation

This plantation is among the oldest in North Carolina and covers an area of more than 15 acres. It is located in Scott Hill near Wilmington. Initially, the property was owned by the widow of Cornelius Harnett, who later transferred ownership to the Foy family in 1795. The plantation was home to the Foy family for six generations until 1971.

On the plantations, there stands a 12-room mansion that was built in 1850 by the Foy family slaves for Joseph Mumford Foy. Within the plantation, you will also see a blacksmith shop, a smokehouse, and agricultural exhibits on the production of peanuts.

The Airlie Garden was created by Rudolf Topel – a German landscape architect – for the Pembroke Jones family. It was later purchased by the New Hanover County in 1998.

Leland was incorporated as a town in North Carolina in 1989. It is located in the north of Brunswick County, to the west of River Brunswick.

To get to Wilmington, visitors have the option to drive themselves, which is a gorgeous drive once off the highways, or fly. Wilmington International Airport (ILM), is just outside of the city and is the closest and most convenient by far. Once arrived, visitors can take a cab, take the Wave Bus 207, or rent a car to drive the downtown area.

What is the best time to visit Wilmington?

Wilmington is best enjoyed with good weather conditions. March-May and September-November are when rates are usually at the lowest, and temperatures aren’t as humid. Summertime is considered the high season, which brings the most crowds and hottest temperatures. 

While Wilmington is in the southern part of the country, visiting during the winter months may bring a damper to your trip due to colder weather conditions. Winters in North Carolina can often be frigid. 

Where should I stay in Wilmington?

When visiting North Carolina, there are 2 main choices for accommodation: downtown or beachfront. 

If you want a more peaceful or relaxed vibe, staying at Wrightsville beach is your best option. There are various guesthouses and hotels all up the coast, such as the Blockade Runner Beach Resort . 

Or you can stay downtown and have easier access to transport and locations within the city. Visitors can even opt to stay waterfront here by the riverwalk at the Embassy Suites Wilmington Riverfront Hotel , boasting a rooftop bar and free breakfast. 

Sample 3-Day Wilmington Weekend Itinerary

Day 1 in wilmington:.

Start your weekend in Wilmington by hopping on a boat to Masonboro Island Reserve , which is only 5 miles away. This is a great start to the day as you are surrounded by nature and flourishing plants and wildlife. Walk around, take it all in, and see how many different animals you can spot. 

Head back to the mainland, straight to Wrightsville Beach. The most popular beach in the Wilmington area is the ideal place to spend the afternoon. Eat some lunch at one of the various beachfront restaurants, and then take a dip in the ocean and kick back for a while.  

After a peaceful day filled with nature and outdoor activities, spend the night out in Wilmington at the Mayfaire Town Center . This is one of the top places to spend an evening, as there is a movie theater, wonderful places to eat, and many stores to make your shopping experience just a little better than usual. 

Day 2 in Wilmington:

Begin your second day in Wilmington at one of the top parks in all of North Carolina, Carolina Beach State Park. Head south and nature lovers will get the chance to see a real-life Venus Flytrap in the wild, which is uncommon in most state parks. Hiking options and swimming are available too, so there is something for everyone. 

After your nature fix for the day, continue south to Kure Beach . As this beach is not as popular as the previous Wrightsville Beach, there will be less people, has beautiful views, and a pier. Eat some lunch at one of the various beachfront restaurants, and then take a dip in the ocean and kick back for a while. 

Stay late on the beach to catch a beautiful sunset on the coastline, and then head back to downtown Wilmington. Plan ahead and make reservations at the Pork City Chop Hous e, one of the best steakhouses in the state. This is by far one of the greatest meals one can have in Wilmington. After dinner, most likely it will be ready for bed. 

Day 3 in Wilmington:

First, grab a coffee to start your morning at Bitty & Beau’s. A cherished coffee house in Wilmington that helps promote and acknowledge people with disabilities . After spending a lot of time in nature, opt to go downtown for your final day in Wilmington. Start your morning by the seas at the USS North Carolina Battleship . This is one of the greatest Navy Vessels in the United States ever used, and is open for daily tours, inside and out; it’s definitely an impressive site!

Next, head over to the Wilmington Riverwalk . There are a lot of great things to see, and free things as well that one can take part in all afternoon here. Walk the Riverwalk itself, and try out the different attractions all around. You never know what you might see. There are various restaurants and cafes all around the area as well to eat lunch or take a rest.

A visit to Wilmington isn’t complete without a night spent in the Historic District. Learn about real American history and discover the historic roots of the city, see vintage homes, and churches that are still in fabulous shape for their age. You can even take a tour through the district on a carriage or trolley. There are various restaurants and shops throughout the area, so don’t forget any souvenirs you may want to take home.

Other things to do in Wilmington

• Kayaking on Zeke’s Island : Another nearby island, Zeke’s Island, is perfect if you are looking for a relaxing, calm afternoon. Take out a kayak or canoe, and paddle around the island admiring the scenery. Make sure you stay for a sunset on the shoreline. 
• North Carolina Aquarium: If traveling to Wilmington with kids, a stop at the aquarium is a must!
• Cameron Art Museum : One of the most impressive things in Wilmington. If you are interested in Art and History, this is a great place to visit. It is also in the same place where ‘Battle of Forks Road’ took place. 
• Cotton Exchange Shopping Center : If you love shopping, then this is a ‘can’t miss’ spot when in Wilmington. The mall has shops and boutiques, unlike chain and retail stores, full of southern charm. There are also multiple restaurants and pubs for a quick bite or drink. 
• New Hanover County Arboretum: The best tourist attraction in Wilmington for plant lovers, the Arboretum is a must-visit. It is filled with different gardens, all for different climates, each with its own vibe and atmosphere. It is a great place to clear your mind or relax. 

Other Tips to know before visiting Wilmington:

While Wilmington is a very pedestrian-friendly city, it is still too big to be on foot the entire time. There are public buses within Wilmington, but you may consider a rental car for more convenience.

Wilmington, North Carolina, is your quintessential Southern town filled with oak tree-lined historic streets and a vibrant downtown. Not as well-known nationally as Savannah or Charleston, South Carolina, Wilmington has so much to offer with its many museums, historic sites, and gorgeous beaches. Here are some great local activities which will help you plan a fantastic weekend in beautiful Wilmington.

Things To Do In Wilmington

Fort Fisher State Recreation Area

The Fort Fisher State Recreation Area is the perfect day trip from Wilmington. Located at the tip of Pleasure Island, the site has 6 miles of pristine beach and trails through a salt marsh. There is limited development on this protected area which is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean and the Cape Fear River. It is a popular area for birders, photographers, surf fishermen, and four-wheel drive enthusiasts (seasonally and with permits). There is a visitor center with restrooms, beach access, a Civil War fort, the state aquarium, and a boat ramp. Plan a hike around the historic area, tour the aquarium and enjoy the afternoon at the beach.

North Carolina Aquarium At Fort Fisher

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is located on the historic Fort Fisher property and a short stroll to the beach. The highlight of my visit was seeing the Asian small-clawed otters in their new, expansive habitat in the Aquarium’s conservatory. I could have watched these guys all day. There is so much to see and do during your visit. Exhibits include freshwater streams, coastline habitats, reefs, the open ocean, swamps, and even sea turtles. The habitats and animals are from North Carolina and around the world. Make sure to tour the outdoor exhibits which are a short hike on a boardwalk. There is an onsite café, and the gift shop has a variety of items for both adults and children.

Fort Fisher State Historic Site

Fort Fisher was controlled by the Confederacy until the last few months of the Civil War and kept the Port of Wilmington open to blockade runners. There is a museum at the visitor center you can tour. Outside, take some time to walk the trail by the fort and explore the 15 wayside exhibits which surround the remnants of the fort. It is a short drive to the boat ramp where the remains of Battery Buchanan can be seen.

Cameron Art Museum

The Cameron Art Museum (CAM) is a remarkably interesting site. Not only is it an art museum but it was the site of the Battle of Forks Road, a Civil War skirmish in which victory fell to 1,600 United States Black troops, many native to the area. This virtually unknown story will soon be a significant part of the museum narrative when the CAM unveils Boundless , a life-size bronze sculpture by Stephen Hays, a North Carolina artist. He used cast features of 11 African American men connected to the site and its story to create the sculpture. The 11 are descendants of the troops, reenactors, veterans, and community leaders. The sculpture will be unveiled in November 2021. In the meantime, you can explore the trail outside the museum which has interpretive signs about the battle.

Indoors the CAM has an eclectic collection and a variety of art on display in its galleries. Exhibitions change about every 6 months. In addition, the museum offers a variety of classes, workshops, and events throughout the year in a welcoming, community environment.

Airlie Gardens

The lovely Airlie Gardens is a popular attraction in the area with more than 120,000 visitors each year. The historic property stretches over 67 acres which includes more than a dozen gardens. Some highlights include the Airlie Oak Lawn which surrounds the almost 500-year-old Airlie oak tree. This stately old tree is a Southern live oak draped with Spanish moss that dominates the scenery. The Pergola Garden and its iconic columns were created in 1904. It is a formal garden with jasmine covering the Pergola and is surrounded by azaleas and camellias. The Spring Garden is near a brick patio which is the last remnant of the original mansion.

Pro Tip: The Airlie Gardens are recognized as a coastal region site on the North Carolina Birding Trail. You can take an 8 a.m. tour with Wild Bird & Garden which allows you to bird watch and enjoy the gardens without the crowds or the heat.

Cape Fear Riverboats Scenic Cruises & Private Charters

Cape Fear Riverboats offer scenic and sunset cruises onboard the Henrietta. The cruise is just an hour long and I found it interesting to learn about the history and the local anecdotes. The cruise begins by heading upriver to see the forks of two major rivers. Once the riverboat turns and heads south you will pass by the battleship USS North Carolina . The captains give you a brief history of the riverfront from the days of early explorers to the modern ships that now come to the Port of Wilmington. With the cruise being just an hour long it is easy to fit it into a day of sightseeing.

Explore Downtown And The Riverwalk

Wilmington’s revitalized downtown and Riverwalk are the perfect locations to spend the day shopping, visiting museums, and dining. The Riverwalk is nearly 2 miles long and follows the bank of the Cape Fear River. It extends from downtown all the way to the Isabella Holmes Bridge with more than 200 shops, restaurants, and attractions nearby. I love the cute, little landscaped pocket parks. Views of the iconic WWII battleship USS North Carolina can be seen from the Riverwalk.

The horse-drawn carriage tours offered by Springbrook Farms are not your typical tours. The Percheron draft horses pulling your carriage are rescue horses. For more than 30 years, Springbrook Farms has committed to rescuing and caring for these beautiful horses. Tours will take you through elegant neighborhoods and the stately homes and historic mansions of the former elite who called this area home.

There are three gorgeous beach towns located just a short drive from downtown Wilmington. Plan to enjoy at least one beach day during your visit. Each one of these communities has its own distinct vibe, but all three towns have one thing in common: white, sandy beaches and lovely views of the Atlantic Ocean. Kure Beach is a quieter place and was popular with the retirees I met during my visit. This is the beach to visit to slow down and relax. Carolina Beach is famed for its vibrant boardwalk, shops, and rides. Wrightsville Beach is a bustling area with shops and restaurants nestled amidst beachside neighborhoods. The city’s been named one of the world’s best surf towns.

Best Hotels In Wilmington

There is such a variety of lodging in the area — everything from downtown hotels and historic properties — to chain hotels, beach houses, and full-service resorts. There is a range of options to fit your budget. Visit Wilmington and Beaches for more information and how to find your perfect place to stay in walkable downtown Wilmington or in one of the three beach towns. The following are where I stayed during my weekend visit.

The Front Street Inn

The Front Street Inn is a historic boutique hotel with the ideal location for exploring downtown Wilmington and the Riverwalk. This cute little inn consistently wins viewers’ choice awards for Wilmington’s Best Hotel/B&B. Peace and quiet abound but you are just a few steps away from the shops, pubs, restaurants, and galleries of the downtown historic district. Head out in another direction into a beautiful historic residential area which is the perfect destination for a stroll through the tree-lined streets. The rooms are clean and well-appointed and most have a queen bed and sleep two. There are a few rooms and larger suites that sleep three. Although the rooms are on the smaller side there are lovely common areas to spread out a bit. Breakfast is included with the package.

Hampton Inn Wilmington-University Area/Smith Creek Station

I moved to the Hampton Inn Wilmington-University Area/Smith Creek Station for one night’s accommodation and this is a great option for a chain hotel. The location is 4 miles from downtown and a 10-minute drive to Wrightsville beach. The rate includes breakfast in the morning and there is an onsite bar and restaurant open in the evenings. Smith Creek Station is an area with shopping and restaurants just a few steps from the hotel. A chain hotel often doesn’t have the charm of a historic property, but you know exactly what to expect based on the brand and that can be a comfortable feeling when visiting a new town.

I just love Wilmington and found it the perfect destination to have a fantastic weekend getaway. My visit was just a few days, but I could have easily spent a week as there is so much to see and do.

There are so many great things to do in the Cape Fear area. But, if your family is looking to hit the road for a little adventure, here are some of our picks for great family day trips near Wilmington, NC!

9 Museums and Entertainment in Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach, with its myriad of golf courses, good weather, and places of entertainment for all ages, remains a tourist destination for families all over the U.S.  Due to its location and tourist focus, Myrtle is has been entertaining Wilmington, NC families for years. Our kids especially love the myriad of mini-golf courses – our family favorite is Mount Atlanticus Minotaur Goff . If you hit a hole in one on your last shot, which involves getting your ball down narrow strip of turf without falling in the water, you win a lifetime pass!  Our 7 and 10 year olds remain eternally hopeful that they will win.

If your kids are feeling a bit brave, try Nightmare Haunted House on the boardwalk. The friendly staff offer a “medium” level of scares, but our kids found it delightfully frightening anyway!  There are lots of other places to try, including the 41,000 square foot WonderWorks amusement park, Myrtle Waves water park and Ripley’s Aquarium . Word of warning – while the pay-as-you-weigh candy shops look glamourous and harmless, it doesn’t take long for your kids to rack up a huge bag, even if they are trying not to!  Forget the terrifying haunted house – our biggest scare of the trip was the bill at the candy place! 

8 See Kinston, NC

This little town is probably best known regionally for Vivian Howard’s restaurant, Chef & the Farmer , but there is much more here than you think. The minor league baseball team, Down East Wood Ducks, is the feeder team for the Texas Rangers – a perfect cap to a day trip! Games start in April. 7 Raven Rock State Park

6 Marbles Kids Museum in Raleigh

Raleigh has a wonderful assortment of kids’ activities, from the North Carolina Museum of Art to the nearby Museum of Life and Science in Durham. There is so much to do in Raleigh, but the Marbles Kids Museum is a family favorite. With educational IMAX shows and so many exhibits, the museum will enthrall kids from toddler-aged to ten. (Marbles does have a café, but you can also walk to dozens of restaurants in downtown Raleigh.)

5 Moores Creek National Battlefield

One of the pivotal battles in the Revolutionary War took place in Currie, NC. And now Moore’s Creek National Battlefield is one of the closest National Parks to Wilmington, making it perfect for family day trips! Just 30 minutes outside of Wilmington, your family can experience the full scope of its history. Be sure to check in on special events and reenactments.

4 Lake Waccamaw State Park

Just 38 miles outside of Wilmington, NC, this spot is very close for Wilmington families. Due to its easy hiking and gorgeous views (as well as a lot of ecology!), Lake Waccamaw State Park is an easy way to get the family out and about. Read our article on discovering Lake Waccamaw State Park.

3 Sea Turtle Hospital in Surf City

The Karen Beasley Sea Turtle Hospital, one of our favorite family day trips, is a working place, small and busy with activity. Although the hospital closes to visitors during the winter, tours are available from April through the summer and into the fall. If your children have an affinity for these magnificent animals, it is worth the visit. Since it won’t be an all-day affair, try to catch a turtle release! 2 Take the ferry to Bald Head Island

Bald Head Island is always a beautiful, unique place for a day trip. There is a maritime forest to hike through, large open beaches, and the ferry is back up and running. (The candy store will be reopening in March!)  Because the two clubs with pools can be pricey and require membership, we suggest packing a lunch or hitting one of the several restaurants open to the public.

Finally, we love the NC Aquarium at Fort Fisher. Because we go there so often, it is nice to drive to one of the other aquarium’s in the NC system: the NC Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores, near Atlantic Beach. This Aquarium has a river otters exhibit.  

Because all of these trips involve less than three hours of family driving time, they are perfect for a family day trip. If your family wants to go further afield, consider the North Carolina Zoo, Charlotte and/or Greensboro.)

The best things to do in Wilmington tend to revolve around the city's history and its waterways. For instance, this region – which was discovered by Giovanni da Verrazzano back in 1524 – boasts enough historical attractions to fill an entire

Wilmington's Riverwalk Wilmington's Riverwalk free

No trip to Wilmington is complete without a stroll along its mile-long Riverwalk. This wooden boardwalk that borders Cape Fear River is lined with popular restaurants and bars – and punctuated by stools and benches that are perfect for taking a break and taking in the scene. 

One traveler who praised the Riverwalk's views also recommended taking a water taxi to the Battleship North Carolina. Another traveler said the Riverwalk encapsulates the local culture, from the smell of the salty sea air to the surrounding history to the buzzy nightlife. 

Historic District Historic District free

The 230-plus blocks that comprise Wilmington's historic district are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and they contain everything from mansions to museums, as well as a host of restaurants and shops. One of the best ways to see the district's highlights is via a guided tour. Some traveler-approved operators include Haunted Wilmington and Wilmington Trolley Company . But you can also download the Wilmington.tours app to your smartphone, which includes four tours, including one with a pub crawl theme and another with a Civil War slant, if you'd rather take a self-guided tour. 

One visitor says it well when describing Wilmington as a "fascinating" but "under-appreciated" Southern city, citing the history that occurred on the port city's cobbled streets. Others say the historic district is charming and quaint, yet still feels cosmopolitan. 

Wrightsville Beach Wrightsville Beach free

Wrightsville Beach is located just 10 miles east of the Historic District, and it receives high praise for its wide ribbon of sand, which is easily accessible and lined by hotels, vacation homes, restaurants, bars and shops. There are even restrooms and showers at several beach-access points. Since the beach is situated several dozen miles from the Gulf Stream, it offers travelers warmer, almost transparent waters. 

Recent travelers hail Wrightsville Beach for its clean sands and peaceful ambiance. They also appreciated the lifeguards, though some warn the surf can be rough, especially in the hours after a storm.

Airlie Gardens Airlie Gardens

Wilmington's 67-acre Airlie Gardens are enchanting. Not only do the gardens feature the flora and fauna native to this corner of North Carolina, they also contain a butterfly house and a tangle of footpaths ideal for a walk through the woods. Plus, a roster of special events further adds to Airlie's allure: For instance, in December, the gardens host a monthlong festival of lights; in the summer, there are concerts every other Friday. 

A recent visitor to Airlie Gardens says that its oak trees are among the most beautiful she's ever seen. Many travelers also highly recommend visiting when the gardens are hung with twinkle lights at Christmastime. Another great time to visit is during the spring, when the garden's many flowers are in bloom. 

Battleship North Carolina Battleship North Carolina

Back when Battleship North Carolina was commissioned in 1941, the ship was thought of as "the world's greatest sea weapon," and it turned out to be just that by participating in more than a dozen offensives in the Pacific Ocean during World War II. The ship was decommissioned in 1947 and was going to be sent for scrap metal but North Carolinians petitioned for the ship to be preserved as a museum – and in 1962, it was dedicated as just that. Today, visitors can tour the ship, all the while learning about the history of its veterans. 

Recent travelers call Battleship North Carolina a must-see for travelers of all ages. But it's important to note that the ship decks can get pretty hot, especially in the summer, and there are lots of stairs to traverse. Recent visitors also recommended arriving early in the day to avoid the midday heat and heaviest crowds. 

Bellamy Mansion Museum Bellamy Mansion Museum

From the mid-19th century until the mid-20th century, one of the largest slaveholders in the state – Dr. John Bellamy – his wife and 10 children lived in this stately 1800s-era Greek Revival mansion. The property contains 22 rooms, lush gardens and restored slave quarters – and today, knowledgeable tour guides give visitors a history of the family, the architecture and the enslaved people that worked on the property. Of the approximately 115 enslaved men, women and children that Bellamy owned, nine resided and worked at the property, according to historical documents.

Along with the entire mansion, travelers can tour the two-story brick slave quarters. Designed to complement the main house, the area includes four sleeping chambers, a laundry room and two five-seat privies. This style of housing for enslaved workers was once quite common in cities where slavery was legal. The structure that stands today – considered one of the best-preserved examples in the country – provides an interesting contrast to the small, rudimentary huts often seen on plantations.

Poplar Grove Plantation Poplar Grove Plantation

Poplar Grove Plantation is part of the National Park Service's Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor, which runs from Wilmington in the north to Jacksonville, Florida , in the south. The Gullah Geechee are the descendants of Africans who were enslaved on the rice, indigo and Sea Island cotton plantations of the lower Atlantic coast. Along with their unique Creole language, the Gullah Geechee are known for their distinct arts, crafts, music, food and religious practices. You'll learn about the Gullah Geechee with a visit to Poplar Grove Plantation, formerly a sweet potato and peanut plantation.

Thanks to the agricultural skills of the Gullah Geechee, who worked on the plantation, the sweet potatoes and peanuts harvested were sold locally to planter families to supplement the diet of the enslaved. Aside from their agricultural contributions, the enslaved people that worked on the plantation also constructed the manor house that visitors see today. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the three-story manor house dates back to 1850. Also on-site are two heritage art studios (a basket gallery and a blacksmith shop), as well as an agriculture exhibit that displays a peanut thrasher and information on the production of peanuts. Families with kids may also be pleased to know that the on-site stables are home to a variety of pigs, goats, ducks, horses, sheep, cats, hens and roosters, representative of 19th-century farm life.

15 Fun Day Trips from Raleigh NC (within a 2-hour drive)

While we love Raleigh and all its glorious attractions, we also love its position in East-Central NC, because it means there are so many options you can take as day trips from Raleigh .

There are so many great getaways you can take from Raleigh, whether you desire a beach break, a foodie paradise, or somewhere historic and full of cultural immersion.

We love living in Raleigh and always find it hard to leave, but if you’ve followed us for a while you know we’re globetrotting travelers at heart, so we also love a short getaway as much as anyone!

We’ve taken many day trips and getaways to explore other interesting places in North Carolina, and so we have listed some of our personal favorite destinations that you can visit in under 2 hours drive from Raleigh.

Best Day Trips From Raleigh NC

1. Wilmington

• Drive time from Raleigh: 2 hours
• Distance: 129.4 miles (208.2 km)

A two hour drive straight down I-40 brings you to the charming port city of Wilmington, NC. Ever since we first moved to Raleigh in 2004, Wilmington has been one of our favorite getaways from Raleigh because it offers something for everyone.

Located on the Cape Fear River, Historic Downtown Wilmington is one of the oldest cities on the east coast with plenty of historical attractions, funky breweries, speakeasies and wine bars, farm-to-table restaurants, galleries, museums, and Victorian-era homes and gardens to explore.

You could say that Wilmington is like a mini version of Savannah and Charleston. 

This city is very walkable and just wandering around town is a great way to take in the pulse of the city.

When you arrive, I suggest grabbing a coffee from the cool local cafe, Bespoke Cafe , they will fuel you up for the day ahead. 

Suggested Activities:

• Stroll the 2 mile scenic Riverwalk and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Cape Fear River. Stop in at markets, unique boutiques, art galleries and locally owned cafés and restaurants.
• Explore the area’s historic roots on a horse-drawn carriage ride of downtown. 
• Visit some of the finest examples of historic antebellum architecture at the Bellamy Mansion , built on the eve of the Civil War.
• Explore The World War II Battleship NORTH CAROLINA , named one of the “Best Museum Ships” by USA TODAY.
• End your day with drinks/dinner whilst taking in sunset at one of the fantastic restaurants along the Riverwalk such as Elijah’s , Pilot House or The George . 
• Explore Wilmington’s 16 breweries on a self-guided brewery tasting tour along the Wilmington Ale Trail. 
• Airlie Gardens , one of the premier gardens in the South and home to the famous nearly 500-year-old Airlie Oak.
• Jungle Rapids Family Fun Park features a waterpark with a wave pool, speed slides and lazy river
• Sip on classic cocktails at The Blind Elephant, a 1920’s Prohibition speakeasy tucked away in a hidden alley. 
• Local musicians frequently play on the back deck at Ogden Tap Room , a family-friendly restaurant with 40 beers on tap and a lawn.
• Cape Fear Riverboats offer daily, narrated one-hour sightseeing tours from March through October.

2. Wrightsville Beach

• Distance : 131.6 miles (211.7 km)

We’re beach people and we know a good beach town when we see one, and Wrightsville Beach is our favorite of the beach towns in North Carolina.

Although famous for its beach, the town has a lot more going for it than just sand and ocean!

Again, it’s an easy 2 hour drive straight down I-40 and Wrightsville is right right next door to Wilmington (12-miles from downtown).

You could combine it with ½ a day in Wilmington and ½ a day in Wrightsville, but I believe there’s plenty to do in each location to warrant a full day in each.

Wrightsville Beach is a sandy barrier island only 4-miles long and 1,000 – 5,000 feet wide.

It presents the Atlantic Ocean on one side, and the calmer waters of the intracoastal waterway on the other.

It has everything we love about a beach and island life – beautiful shoreline, laid back vibe, surf culture, cafes, jaw dropping sunrises and sunsets, and fresh, delicious seafood.

When summer comes, this is one of our most popular Raleigh day trips since we love the beach!

Suggested activities:

• Start your day with an excellent coffee at the cool local cafe, SUNdays, located above the surf shop opposite Crystal Pier. Alternative coffee spot is The Workshop .
• Walk over from SUNdays to Crystal Pier for beautiful views of the beachfront, go for a swim, play in the sand, read a book. 
• Adapt Kitchen & Juice Bar has the tastiest, most diversely nutritious smoothie bowls.
• Lunch at Tower 7 Baja Mexican Grill . Popular place to eat for the locals. Other options include Shark Bar & Kitchen , Poe’s Tavern , South Beach Grille .
• Beach Time at Johnny Mercer’s Pier (the only concrete fishing pier in the state of North Carolina and extends more than 1,200 feet into the Atlantic) or at the Crystal Pier section!
• Go kayaking or paddle boarding through the salt marshes on a guided tour with Wrightsville SUP .
• Wrightsville Beach Brewery for great beers and pub food.
• Lighthouse Beer & Wine – one stop shop with dog-friendly Beer Garden
• Enjoy sundowner drinks at the bar on Crystal Pier.
• Watch the sunset at the South End. 
• Dinner at Ceviche’s – probably the best restaurant in Wrightsville. Hello Panama, I now want to visit your country (or one of the lunch places options).

If you haven’t given Durham much thought, pay attention because it has plenty of cool and interesting things to do, and the food scene is next level. 

This is a vibrant city, offering sports, history, the arts and a community of over 300 restaurants and 40+ annual festivals. All in less than a 45 minute drive.

Durham continues to evolve. It’s where tobacco factories have given way to a hip entertainment district. It’s where Duke University lives, where the Durham Bulls play baseball, and where top shelf musicals like Hamilton perform at the Durham Performing Arts Center (DPAC).

Being so close, this is one of our most frequent day trips from Raleigh and we always find something new to do.

4. Chapel Hill

• Drive time from Raleigh: 40 minutes
• Distance: 28.3 miles (45.5km)

This famous university town is known as one of the top 10 best college towns in the USA, and the “Southern Part of Heaven” .

It’s also known for its famed music scene and as “America’s Foodiest Small Town” by Bon Appetit because of the high quality of farmer’s markets, restaurants, and farms.

Home to the campus of the University of North Carolina – the nation’s first public university and its basketball team – Chapel Hill has a little bit of something for everyone.

The heart of Chapel Hill is Historic Franklin Street , home to more than 200 restaurants, bars, and retail stores.

You can spend 1/2 a day to a full day here and see all the highlights.

• Coffee and treats at Epilogue Books Chocolate Brews – cool locally owned cafe, book store, chocolate shop right on Franklin St.
• Eat and drink at the Carolina Coffee Shop , North Carolina’s Oldest Restaurant.

• Walk the UNC campus. Look for historic landmarks like the Davie Poplar and the Old Well ( self-guided tours available ).
• Basketball fans, don’t miss the Carolina Basketball Museum .

• Merritt’s Grill – Great sandwiches. Double or triple decker with pimento cheese on rye!

5. Winston-Salem

• Drive time from Raleigh: 1 hour, 40 minutes
• Distance : 103.4 miles (166.4 km)

Head west on I-40 for just under 2 hours and you’ll arrive in Winston-Salem, a charming city that’s home to historic attractions.

From cobblestone streets, to museums, breweries, restaurants, art galleries, eclectic shops, outdoor adventures and more than 40 wineries in the neighboring Yadkin Valley, Winston-Salem is worth a day trip from Raleigh. 

There’s interesting history here. The Moravians (Protestants who spoke German) settled this region in the 1750s. Salem is the original, if quieter, half of the twin city.

Winston-Salem is also a town built on tobacco, often referred to as “Camel City” after the world-famous cigarette brand created by R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company.

This city is also the home of Wake Forest University .

• Grab a hot cup of locally roasted coffee and farm-fresh breakfast at a Winston-Salem original, Krankies .
• Historic Bethabara Park – the very first Moravian settlement in North Carolina.
• Old Salem Museum and Gardens – founded in 1766 and one of the country’s most well-documented historic sites.
• Historic West End – where early 1900s Victorian-style homes meet the hustle and bustle of downtown Winston-Salem.
• Reynolda House Museum of American Art – explore the restored 1917 mansion of Katharine and R.J. Reynolds.
• Grab a gourmet sandwich or Moravian Chicken Pie at Muddy Creek Cafe .
• Visit one of the 45 wineries located in neighboring Yadkin Valley .
• Tour the city by Segway, SUP Tours, e-BIKE Tours, Trolley Sightseeing with Triad Eco Adventures
• Take home some specialty dark chocolate from Black Mountain Chocolate .
• The town of Bethania is the only remaining example of an open field agricultural village in NC
• Salem God’s Acre Cemetery –  active graveyard of the Salem Congregation, a group of 12 Moravian Churches. It has been in continuous use from 1771
• Ryan’s Restaurant – Steaks,Chops & Seafood, nestled in a wooded setting minutes from downtown
• Drink a brew at Foothills Brewing , one of the largest craft breweries in the Southeastern USA.
• The Tavern In Old Salem – a restored 1816 house and the waiters wear traditional Moravian costumes.

6. Johnston County (Clayton, Benson, Smithfield)

• Drive time – Clayton: 25 mins, Smithfield: 40 mins, Benson: 35 mins
• Distance: 32.8 miles (52.7 km)

Don’t overlook Johnston County (JoCo) when looking for places to visit near Raleigh NC.

JoCo is one of the biggest counties in North Carolina , and the next county south of Raleigh.

The I-95, running along the north-south corridor of the country, runs close by. The I-40 runs through the east-west corridor of the county JoCo.

So it’s location is important, but you don’t want to make it just a place to grab some fuel and pass on through. JoCo is worth stopping in for a while.

The below three towns you could easily incorporate into one day trip, going in a triangle like direction from Raleigh > Clayton > Smithfiled > Benson > Raleigh.

Clayton is a small town community that has been booming with transplants and where you’ll find boutique stores, historic buildings, charming southern homes, and hipster cafes and bars. 

• The Market at Three Little Birds – a store selling unique, handcrafted items from over 70 local artists.
• Boulevard West – hipster café experience where you’ll find locals on their laptops at the bar drinking all manners of coffee concoctions.
• Dinner at Crawford Cookshop (Clayton), amazing food by Raleigh’s award-winning chef, Scott Crawford.
• Drinks at Revival 1869 (Clayton), awesome whiskey and cocktail bar.
• Lunch at The Gildered Pear Brew House (Smithfield) locals favorite spot.
• Boutique shopping at The Dragonfly (Smithfield)
• Shop for cool home decor items at Twisted Willow (Smithfield)
• Ava Gardner Museum (Smithfield)
• Nancy Jo’s Homemade (Clayton) – a local’s favorite for many years. Famous for its chicken salad
• Clayton General Store – cool milkshake bar and home decor items
• Main Street Community Market (Clayton) – Volunteers help maintain this tranquil, artistic space

Smithfield has small-town charm. Situated along the Neuse River, it’s the seat of the county and the hub of business activity.

So while you are popping in to shop while you drop, be sure to visit these other places.

• Ava Gardner Museum – known as the most beautiful movie star of the 40’s and 50’s. Ava was from JoCo and this museum is dedicated to telling the story of her life, loves and careers.
• Simple Twist – one of the most popular restaurants in Smithfield NC
• Oak City Collection – filled with local artist’s creations of signs, T-Shirts and jewelry.
• Double Barley Brewery – If you’re looking for local craft brew, this family-friendly brewery has won multiple awards for their beers.
• Bentonville Battlefield – The largest Civil War battle happened near Bentonville and it’s now an historic site and part of the Civil War Trail.

Benson is well known for hosting Mule Day on the 4th Saturday of September, a festival that attracts over 60,000 people each year.

• Jp’s Pastry – a thriving bakery business that is the only certified gluten free bakery in North and South Carolina.
• Dixie Divas Boutique – women’s clothing store. Check out the boots!
• Salvaged Heirlooms – an eclectic little general store is filled with local artists that remind you of the warmth. 
• Cornerstone Cafe & Coffee – known for its waffles, mac & cheese and grilled cheese sandwiches.
• Redneck BBQ Lab – award winning BBQ joint, everything smoked on the property, nothing is grilled or fried.

7. New Bern

• Distance: 116.1 miles (186.8 km)

Founded in 1710, historic New Bern (named after Bern, Switzerland) is a charming riverfront town set along the picturesque Trent and Neuse Rivers, and was the first state capital of NC.

Home to Tryon Palace and the birthplace of Pepsi Cola, New Bern is also filled with quaint restaurants and cafes, art galleries, antique stores, riverfront attractions and outdoor activities and offers something for everyone.

Romantic movie lovers will be interested to know that in 1996 The Notebook was set in New Bern and written by New Bern resident, Nicholas Sparks!

Bern is the old Germanic word for Bear, and the bear became the symbol of the city.

• Visit Tryon Place , the first permanent capitol of North Carolina and home to the Tryon family.
• Do a self-guided tour including Historic Homes Tour, Civil War Tour, Architectural tour and more.
• Or a guided tour by trolley, boat, or ghost walk. 
• Visit the signature Pepsi Store. Pull up to the fountain bar and enjoy a glass of Pepsi
• Enjoy the scenic 6 acre waterfront, Union Point Park
• Go kayaking up the Neuse River with Stillwater Kayaks
• Cow Cafe for sandwiches, salads, and over 60 flavors of their famous HOMEMADE ICE CREAM!
• Visit the very place Pepsi-Cola was invented . Step back in time enjoying a fountain Pepsi. 
• Chase bears all over town . Don’t worry, these bears are made of fiberglass. 
• The interior of Christ Episcopal Church was designed in the style of Christopher Wren, the famous English architect. A must see for visitors.
• New Bern Battlefield Park (if you love Civil War History)
• Firemen’s Museum – tells the story of the oldest fire company in NC

• Baker’s Kitchen – for delights like sweet potato biscuits, Dutch potatoes, and biscuits and gravy.
• Morgan’s Tavern & Grill – for seafood in an historic setting.
• Brewery99 – first brewery in Craven County.
• Beer Army Burger Company – for unique and interesting burgers, Bacon appetizers, and tater tots.
• Persimmons Waterfront Restaurant – expect good food and the best outdoor dining experience in town!

8. Fayetteville

• Drive time from Raleigh: 1 hour
• Distance: 64.6 miles (103.9 km)

Fayetteville’s tourism slogan is, “Welcome to America’s Hometown: History, Heroes, A Hometown Feeling!”

You might know of Fayetteville as home to the U.S. Army’s most populous base, Fort Bragg. The community wears this distinction proudly and shows its appreciation by actively pursuing the freedoms those soldiers protect.

Here you will find museums and monuments dedicated to telling the story of the service of many of the men and women in the area who sacrificed, and they are one of the most moving things to see in North Carolina.

But Fayetteville’s ongoing revitalization also offers a vibrant and modern city with interesting cultural activities, historic sites and natural beauty.

• The Airborne and Special Operations Museum – the only museum that tells the comprehensive history of US Army Airborne and Special Operations troops.
• North Carolina Veterans Park – honors veterans from all branches of service throughout North Carolina.
• Cape Fear Botanical Garden – 80 acres nestled between the Cape Fear River and Cross Creek.
• Poe House – peek into the past.
• Lunch or dinner at Huske Hardware Brewing Company – locals fave gastropub. 
• Lunch at Scrub Oaks Restaurant – contemporary American menu common to a neighborhood pub but with flare.
• Lunch at New Deli Restaurant – specialty grilled cheeses, to pizzas and paninis.

9. Greenville, NC

• Drive time from Raleigh: 1 hour, 20 minutes
• Distance: 84 miles (135.1 km)

Greenville is known as a thriving cultural, educational, economic, and medical hub of Eastern North Carolina, and of course, the home of East Carolina University (ECU).

It’s a place where you can experience vibrant art, live music, and the culinary scene in the Uptown Greenville and Dickinson Avenue Districts.

There’s outdoor adventures like kayaking, biking the Greenville Greenway, agricultural experiences at local farms, plus antique and boutique shopping, live music concerts and festivals.

You can taste test your way through local restaurants and breweries in the walkable Uptown and Dickinson Avenue Districts.

Throughout the year there’s craft beer festivals, indoor and outdoor farmers markets, and food truck rodeos.

10. Hillsborough

• Drive time from Raleigh: 45 minutes
• Distance: 37.9 miles (60.9 km)

Established in 1784 and located along the Eno River, Hillsborough has served as a focal point for major historic events, including the Revolutionary War and Civil War.

Located in Orange County, between Greensboro and Durham, it’s easily accessible via I-40 near Chapel Hill, and I-85 near Durham. 

Hillsborough’s downtown historic district is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and features more than 100 homes, churches, schools, and other structures from the late 18th and 19th centuries.

Today, Hillsborough is a haven for artists and writers, for barbecue lovers attending the annual Hog Day, and owntown comes alive Friday evenings with arts and entertainment during Last Fridays celebrations. 

Its scenic appeal, graceful architecture, and convenient location provide a charming getaway from Raleigh. Go and explore history, live music, unique shops, and award winning restaurants.

• Old Town Cemetery – dates back to 1757 with over 180 grave markers
• Cup-A-Joe (local institution for coffee lovers)
• Saratoga Grill (seafood, salads and sandwiches)
• Panciuto (farm to fork menu)

11. Pilot Mountain State Park

• Drive time from Raleigh : 2 hours
• Distance: 122 miles (196.3 km)

Located 20 miles northwest of Winston-Salem near the border with Virginia, Pilot Mountain State Park centers around the iconic geologic knob that serves as a beacon to the surrounding Piedmont. 

Once a navigational landmark for the Saura tribe, the Big Pinnacle can be viewed from the park’s summit area which also provides panoramic views of the Piedmont and the Sauratown and Blue Ridge Mountains. 

Pilot Mountain has miles of trails to explore, and you can journey through the park on foot, on horseback, or in a canoe.

• Hiking – trails take hikers around the mountain base, up Little Pinnacle, and along the Yadkin River. Two of North Carolina’s state trails traverse the park:  the Mountains-to-Sea State Trail, and the Yadkin River paddle trail.
• Bicycling – for experienced cyclists, the main park road is popular for hill climbing by bicycle. The road averages a 10 percent grade for 2.5 miles and has sections of 16 percent grade.
• Horse riding – The Corridor Trail, Yadkin Islands Trail, and Yadkin River Park Trail are all open to horseback riding.
• Paddling – Paddle the Yadkin River through the park on a segment of the Yadkin River State Trail
• Rock climbing and rappelling are allowed on portions of the park’s steep cliffs.

• Drive time from Raleigh:   15 – 20 minutes
• Distance : 12.1 miles (19.4 km)

The closest day trip from Raleigh is Cary. When we first moved to Raleigh in 2004, we never visited Cary, in fact, we didn’t even know there was a downtown Cary.

Fast forward to today and you can easily spend a full day in Cary, not just downtown, but the surrounding area.

The downtown area has been through major changes in recent years and we’ve grown to love how charming and vibrant and fun downtown has become with new restaurants, breweries, bars and cafes.

Cary is now home to some of the best places to eat and drink in the Triangle, and there’s some great nature trails and parks in Cary too.

If you have overlooked Cary downtown in the past, it’s time to take a look.

13. Southern Pines (Pinehurst)

• Drive time from Raleigh: 1 hour, 15 minutes
• Distance : 70.2 miles (112.9 km)

The small southern town of Southern Pines is a town in Moore County among the sandhills.

Originally founded in 1884 as a winter health resort for northerners, the town has a rich history and has seen lots of growth in recent years. 

Internationally known as the home of American golf (the famous Pimehurst is 10 minutes away), but it’s not just for golfers! Southern Pines is also nationally known and referred to as “Horse Country” for its abundance of horse farms in the area, plus there’s nice parks and a growing number of craft breweries.

As for downtown Southern Pines, it is embodied in its unique array of shops including historic buildings. Enjoy these Moore County trails while in the Pinehurst area.

• Stroll around downtown
• Pinehurst Resort (visit the resort or play golf)
• Weymouth Center for the Arts and Humanities (stunning gardens)
• Hiking or biking the trails on the Boyd Round Timber Tract or Weymouth Woods Sandhill Nature Preserve
• Southern Pines Brewing – great local beers
• Bell Tree Restaurant and Tavern (stylish, old-school watering hole with pub food)
• The Ice Cream Parlor Restaurant (traditional small town ice cream shop)
• The Sunrise Theater (for new and classic films, and concerts)
• SoPies – low-key counter-serve outlet offering NY style pies
• Sandhills Horticultural Gardens
• Aberdeen Lake Park (walking path around the lake, playground for kids)
• Sly Fox Pub (British classics with an innovative twist)
• Take a drive over to North Carolina Zoo to see more than 1,700 animals

14. Eno River State Park

• Distance: 35.5 miles (57.1 km)

Located just 15-minutes northwest of Durham, Eno River State Park is composed of more than 4,200 acres and offers nearly 30 miles of trails along a swift, shallow stream. 

If you’re looking for day trips from Raleigh that involve a day in nature, there’s plenty to do here from hiking, paddling, fording the river, bouldering, picnicking, swimming/wading, hammocking, and general exploration. 

The river winds through hills and bluffs with shrubs and pines that are ready to be hiked and enjoyed through one of five access points. 

• Hike one of the 17 trails, good for all levels
• Canoeing and kayaking are permitted, but sometimes challenging due to shallow water.
• Swimming: our friend’s from Durham took us to Eno Rock Quarry
• Fishing: a great place for fly-fishing, casting lures, or baiting with the ever reliable worms and crickets
• Picnicking: two picnic areas provide the perfect spot for enjoying a meal in the open air.
• Camping: there’s backpack and group camping options

15. Kinston

• Drive time from Raleigh: 1 hour, 30 minutes
• Distance: 81.6 miles (131.3 km)

Set along the banks of the Neuse River in the coastal plains region of eastern North Carolina, Kinston is one of the oldest towns in the state and has been the county seat of Lenoir County since its formation in 1791.

If you’ve heard of Vivian Haward’s Chef and the Farmer, and Mother Earth Brewing, that’s Kinston.

Here you will discover 300 years of history, an impressive food scene, arts scene, and Kinston’s musical roots run deep. 

There’s no shortage of war history, including the Tuscarora War, the Revolutionary War, and the Civil War, and is part of the African American Musical Heritage Trail with a fascinating music history – during its tobacco days, Kinston was a hotbed of music, and musicians traveled from all over to play in the tobacco warehouses, including James Brown.

• Pop into the Kinston visitors center (Mon – Sat) conveniently located downtown for local advice on what to do, maps, and guides. Then take a stroll around downtown. 
• CSS Neuse Civil War Interpretive Center – an educational museum that tells the story of the Civil War in the United States and the CSS Neuse, one of 26 ironclad ships commissioned by the Confederate navy.
• Chef and the Farmer – eat at Vivian Howard’s restaurant, known for thoughtful, creative cooking rooted in this region’s ingredients and traditions.
• Mother Earth Brewing   – a green-conscious craft brewery with a solar-powered taproom, lively beer garden, really good barrel-aged brews and interesting seasonals.
• Community Council for the Arts (CCA) is a non-profit organization and a gallery featuring local artwork and offering educational programs
• African American Music Trail – great way to learn more about Kinston’s African American music scene.
• Historic Harmony Hall – a restored pre-American Revolution home built in 1772 and housed the first governor of North Carolina, Richard Caswell, served as a Civil War hospital, church, public library, and is said to be haunted.
• King’s BBQ – offering world famous chicken and barbecue since 1936
• Sugar Hill Pizzeria – pizza by the slice, Brooklyn style pizza
• Boiler Room Oyster Bar- another Vivian Howard restaurant. Oysters, burgers and beer.
• The O’Neil – a 1920s bank turned boutique hotel.
• Pearson Park – part of the Pearson Park Trail that runs parallel to the Neuse River for about 3/8’s mile from the southern end of Pollock Street ending onto South Heritage Street. Largest part is the Loch Neuse Dragon Playground.
• Mitchelltown Historic District – listed on the National Register of Historic Places, with fine examples of the Queen Anne, Classical and Neo-Classical Revival, Colonial Revival, Craftsman, and Spanish Mission Revival styles and numerous illustrations of the American Foursquare and the Bungalow. Northwest of the city.

When the free outdoor concert series start coming back to Southeastern North Carolina, you know that summer is right around the corner.

That's pretty much where we're at this weekend, with the return of three Wilmington-area concert series, including Kure Beach's Boogie in the Park. Check below for performers and details.

But wait, there's more. In addition to free outdoor concerts, we've got a diverse collection of touring acts and local bands this weekend, along with a Cinco de Mayo celebration, a film festival, an '80s-centric dance night and the return of a Wilmington comedy legend.

ALL WEEKEND

Wilmington Jewish Film Festival

May 1-9 at Thalian Hall : Week-long festival of films exploring Jewish culture, issues and people. Highlights include "Remembering Gene Wilder" (3 p.m. May 5), a documentary about the comic actor, and "Less Than Kosher" (7 p.m. May 4), about a failed musician and self-described "bad Jew" who gets a job in her parents' synagogue. Screenings are 7 p.m. May 1-2, 4-5 and 9, and 3 p.m. May 5. 910-632-2285.

Timmy Sherrill

May 3-4 at Dead Crow Comedy Room : It's not a stretch to say that, without Timmy Sherrill, Wilmington might not have a full-time comedy club. The comic and actor ("Birdies," DC's "Stargirl") stepped away from the Dead Crow Comedy Room, which he co-founded, to focus on his comedy and acting career after the club moved to its current location three years ago. This weekend Sherrill returns to the Dead Crow for a weekend full of shows. 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. May 3-4, tickets are $18 and $28 .

Cinco de Mayo Weekend

May 4-5 at Tequila Waterfront (14 Harnett St.): Two-day celebration of the Mexican state of Puebla’s independence from French occupation will include Mexican food, live music and dance, DJs, piñatas and face-painting for the kids (Sunday only), vendor booths and more. 4-10 p.m. May 4 and noon-5 p.m. May 5.

Let's Dance

May 3 at UnderFront : It'll be a DJ-driven dance-off of sorts when two of Wilmington's top DJs — RizzyBeats and Fort Lowell Records owner James Tritten — join forces (and vinyl collections) as part of this regular, venue-hopping series. The focus will be on danceable pop, rock and hip-hops tracks from the 1980s. 8 p.m. May 3, $5 cover.

Marshall Charloff & Purple Xperience

May 3 at Thalian Hall : Touring tribute act pays homage to the songs of late pop star Prince. 7:30 p.m. May 3, 910-632-2285.

Jordan Davis

May 3 at Live Oak Bank Pavilion : Platinum-selling and CMA Award-winning country singer has had such No.1 hits as "Buy Dirt," "Next Thing You Know" and "Singles You Up." 7 p.m. May 3, tickets start at $60 .

Ocean Front Flicks

May 3 at Oceanfront Park, Kure Beach : Catch a pirate-themed movie on the beach as part of this weekly series. This week's flick is 2006's "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest." 8 p.m. May 3, free.

Free Concert Friday

May 3 at The Eagle's Dare : Free concert series kicks off 2024 with a show from Journey tribute act Trial By Fire. 4 p.m. gates, 7 p.m. opener, 8 p.m. headliner. Free.

May 3 at Bowstring : Longtime folk/reggae rocker Mike Pinto has some fun and saucy songs. Opening acts are Rockstead and Pleasantly Wild. 7 p.m. May 3, tickets start at $15 .

May 3 at The Palm Room : Longtime Athens, Georgia, band blends multiple styles into a compellingly off-kilter sound, much like their musical predecessors, the Grateful Dead. Even so, they're more potent songsmiths than noodly jam band. 10 p.m. May 3, cover at the door.

May 3 at Reggie's 42nd Street Tavern : Wilmington punk act just dropped a new EP, "Summertime," they recorded back in 2018 . With Nervous Systems, Busted Radio and Emergency Nothing. 7 p.m. May 3, $10.

Immersed Magazine community fundraiser

May 4 at Reggie's 42nd Street Tavern : If you've not gotten hip to Wilmington magazine Immersed, you need to do so immediately, if not sooner. They are doing some great, important stuff. To wit: This eight-band bill to raise money for Wilmington's Northside Food Co-op. The lineup includes: Wilmington acts Tercel, which is dropping a sweet new single, "Tiny Towns," on Fort Lowell Records May 14, along with Madisinn, Microdose and Rosary. Plus, Philly bands Sacculina and In Jest, Durham's Survival Tactics and a surprise guest. 5 p.m. doors/community dinner May 4. All proceeds benefit the Northside Food Co-op.

May Tha 4th Be With You

May 4 at Bourgie Nights : "Star Wars"-themed night of music (get it, "May the 4th ...") headlined by viral electro/hip-hop artist Lil Blurry. With N.C. hip-hop duo Rebels No Savage and Wilmington's own MoeSOS DC. 9 p.m. doors, 10 p.m. show, $10 in advance, $15 day of show.

May 4 at Live Oak Bank Pavilion : County singer inspired by the "outlaw" genre that rose to popularity in the 1970s hit No. 4 on the country chart with his 2016 album "I'm Not the Devil." New album "Change the Game" dropped in March. 7 p.m. May 4, tickets start at $30 .

Momedy Comedy

May 4 at Nauti Dog, Carolina Beach : Wilmington stand-ups Lew Morgante and Alex Denning, along with Shannon Perez and Amanda Goodyear, present this lunchtime comedy jam especially geared to the moms out there. 11 a.m.-1 p.m. May 4, tickets are $25.

May 4 at Reel Cafe : South Carolina rockers bring their show to the rooftop of this longtime spot in the heart of downtown Wilmington. 7 p.m. May 4, cover.

Boogie in the Park

May 5 at Oceanfront Park, Kure Beach : Wilmington psychobillians Phantom Playboys kick off this free, outdoor music series for 2024. 5-7 p.m. May 5, free.

Rock the Dock

May 5 at Bluewater Grill : Carolinas-based reggae act Mystic Vibrations kicks off a free, weekly outdoor music series at this Wrightsville Beach hotspot. 4-8 p.m. May 5, free.

Are you looking for day trips from Durham, NC ? There are plenty of great places near the city that make for a very fun day trip.

It’s amazing to spend time in Durham as it’s a city with many things to do, but it can also be very fun to explore a new place. From exploring a small town with a history that dates back to 1632 to visiting a large city and exploring iconic sights, you can have a great time during a day trip.

It may be hard to decide where to go, and to help you out, I made this Durham day trips guide with a large variety of amazing places for a day trip from the city.

Day Trips from Durham, NC

Colonial williamsburg, va.

Distance from Durham: 3 hours

Colonial Williamsburg is a large living museum that you can find in Williamsburg, VA. It is a part of Williamsburg’s historic district and covers an area of 122 ha.

You can find hundreds of restored and rebuilt buildings here from the time that Williamsburg was the capital of the Colony of Virginia in the 18th century.

During a day trip, you can explore the district and see beautiful historic architecture.

There are also costumed actors that will bring history to life.

In addition to that, there are tours during which you can discover some of the key sights of Colonial Williamsburg and learn about history, and there are interesting demonstrations of historic trades.

Besides that, there are fun events, great hotels, and many wonderful dining options.

Asheville, NC

Asheville, NC, located in Western North Carolina, is a great city to visit for a day trip and you can get there by car from Durham in a bit more than 3 hours.

There is a large variety of things to do in Asheville, and there’s something for everyone’s liking.

For example, you could go to Biltmore and do a tour during a day trip. This is the largest privately owned house in the United States and was built at the end of the 19th century.

Visiting one of Asheville’s art galleries is another must during a day trip. For example, you can go to Lexington Glassworks, which is a glassblowing studio and gallery, or you can check out the art galleries of the River Arts District.

The Asheville Pinball Museum , which is a museum where you can find 70 playable vintage pinball machines, is another great place to go.

In addition to that, there are plenty of interesting museums in Asheville, such as the Asheville Museum of Science.

Myrtle Beach, SC

Myrtle Beach, SC, is a resort city that you can find on the Atlantic Coast. You can get here by car in about 3 hours, so it can be great for a day trip from Durham.

It is a popular place for many because of its numerous fun attractions.

Whether you want to play miniature golf, ride a Ferris wheel, enjoy views of the oceans, and much more, you can do it in Myrtle Beach.

Ripley’s Aquarium of Myrtle Beach is another highlight. This is an interesting aquarium where you can see thousands of animals and have various experiences, including behind-the-scenes encounters.

Myrtle Beach also has many great options if you want to see a show during a day trip. For example, you can go to The Carolina Opry to enjoy shows of comedy, dance, and music.

Raleigh, NC

Distance from Durham: 30 minutes

The capital of the state, Raleigh, NC, is a wonderful city because of Raleigh’s many things to do and see. You can get to Raleigh from Durham, by car, in less than 30 minutes.

When you are doing a day trip to the city, you can visit one of the great museums of the city, such as the North Carolina Museum of Art or the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences.

There are also great activities for kids in the city, such as visiting the Marbles Kids Museum, where you can also find the Marbles IMAX, a movie theater with shows about the universe and nature. You can also find great attractions for kids in Pullen Park, such as a miniature train.

In addition to that, Raleigh has interesting historic sites, and there are many good places for entertainment. For example, you can go to the Carolina Theater to see a show on this day.

Furthermore, both the Morgan Street Food Hall and the Transfer Co. Food Hall are great places to go if you want to have dinner in the city.

Charlottesville, VA

Charlottesville, VA, can be reached from Durham in about 3 hours. The city of Charlottesville is home to the University of Virginia, which is a university with a stunning campus.

You can also find Monticello in Charlottesville. This was a plantation of Thomas Jefferson and it was designed by the Founding Father.

During a day trip, you can go to the Downtown Mall, which is a beautiful pedestrian area where you can find historic buildings and more than 120 stores.

Greensboro, NC

Distance from Durham: 1 hour

You can get to the city of Greensboro from Durham in less than 1 hour. You can discover many great things to do in Greensboro making the city one of the most fun day trips from Durham.

For example, when you are here, you can go to the Greensboro Science Center to learn about various topics of science and natural history, or you can go to the Weatherspoon Art Museum to see works of art.

Greensboro is also home to many venues for live entertainment. For example, you can go to the Greensboro Coliseum Complex for a variety of events, or you can go to the beautiful, historic Carolina Theatre.

Another place where you can have fun when you are in the city is Boxcar Bar + Arcade, which is both an arcade and a bar where you can play games and have a drink.

Fayetteville, NC

Distance from Durham: 1.5 hours

Fayetteville, NC, is a city that you can get to in about 1.5 hours from Durham.

From historic houses to museums related to the military to great performing arts theaters, there are many things to do in Fayetteville for everyone’s liking.

A great museum to visit during this day trip is the Airborne and Special Operations Museum , which is a museum where you can learn about the history of Special Operations and the United States Army Airborne School. To see everything in the museum you need about 2.5 hours.

You can also go to an event at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden, and there are great places to visit when visiting Fayetteville with kids, such as the Fascinate-U Children’s Museum.

Fayetteville has great performing arts theaters as well, such as the Cameo Art House Theatre and the Cape Fear Regional Theatre.

Roanoke, VA

Distance from Durham: 2.5 hours

A 2.5-hour drive away from Durham, NC, is the city of Roanoke.

In Roanoke, you can see the Mill Mountain Star, which is the largest freestanding neon star in the world and it dates back to 1949. The star was made to promote the city by a local merchant association.

The city of Roanoke is also home to a variety of great museums, of which you can choose one to visit when you are only one day in the city, such as the Taubman Museum of Art , Virginia Museum of Transportation, the Science Museum of Western Virginia, and the Roanoke Pinball Museum.

It can also be great to end your day by seeing a show at the Mill Mountain Theatre.

Charlotte, NC

Distance from Durham: 2 hours

From an amusement park to amazing museums to modern and historic theaters, there are many things to do in Charlotte making it a fun day trip from Durham. From Durham, NC, you can get to the state’s most populous city in about 2 hours.

If you want to have fun, you can go to Carowinds , which is an amusement park with more than 14 roller coasters.

When you go here, you likely won’t have enough time to explore other sights in the city, but you can still have dinner in Charlotte, such as at Optimist Hall, or you can go to one of the city’s theaters.

One of the best theaters to go to if you want to see a show is the Belk Theater at Blumenthal Performing Arts Center.

You can also go to Truist Field and see a baseball game of the Charlotte Knights.

Charlotte’s many amazing museums, such as Discovery Place Science, the NASCAR Hall of Fame, and the two locations of The Mint Museum are great to visit during a trip.

Columbia, SC

Distance from Durham: 3.5 hours

Columbia, South Carolina’s capital city, is a wonderful place to check out if you’re looking for day trips from Durham. From Durham, you can get to Columbia in less than 3.5 hours.

When you are here, you could visit the South Carolina State House and do a tour.

The city also has interesting museums, such as the Columbia Museum of Art , where you can find a diverse collection of art, and the South Carolina Military Museum.

Alternatively, you can spend a few hours at the Riverbanks Zoo & Garden. This is a zoo where you can find more than 2,000 animals surrounded by beautiful plants.

Soda City Market , a weekly European-style street market, can be great. This is a producer-only market where you can find about 150 vendors each week.

Richmond, VA

From Durham, NC, you can get to Richmond, VA, in a bit more than 2 hours.

Richmond, VA, is one of the largest cities in the state of Virginia and it is the capital city of its state. Being founded in 1742, the city has interesting historic sites and played an important role in history.

The city has incredible museums, of which you can choose one to visit during a day trip. Some of the museums that you can see here are the Science Museum of Virginia , the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, and the American Civil War Museum.

You can also go to an event at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden or visit a historic landmark, such as Maymont or the White House of the Confederacy.

Wilmington, NC

Wilmington, NC, located in Eastern North Carolina, is a city near Durham that you can reach in a bit more than 2 hours.

From exploring Wilmington’s historic district during a horse-drawn carriage tour to going for a stroll along the Wilmington Riverwalk and enjoying views of the Cape Fear River to going to one of the city’s museums, such as the Wilmington Railroad Museum , Wilmington’s many things to do means that you’ll have a fun time when spending a day here.

You can also go to Battleship North Carolina , which is a fast battleship that was used in WWII and that you can explore through a self-guided tour.

It can also be great to end your day by going to the historic Thalian Hall and enjoying a show, such as a concert or a live theater show. It is also possible to do a behind-the-scenes tour of the Thalian Hall.

Norfolk, VA

From Durham, you can reach the city of Norfolk, VA, in 3 hours.

In Norfolk, you can check out the Chrysler Museum of Art, which is an art museum with paintings that span a period of about 5,000 years.

A great place to have dinner when in Norfolk is The Market in the Waterside District. This is a food hall with eight food and drink vendors.

Another fun activity for a day trip is to go to the Virginia Zoo and see more than 700 animals that represent more than 150 species.

You can go to Nauticus when you are in Norfolk, which is a maritime discovery center where you can learn about maritime history and learn about science through interactive exhibits and events.

Virginia Beach, VA

You can get to Virginia Beach, VA, from Durham, NC, in a bit more than 3 hours by car, and this is one of the most fun.

When you are spending a day in the city, you can go to the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center to learn about thousands of animals and see interesting interactive exhibits.

Virginia Beach is also home to great historical landmarks.

Furthermore, two interesting museums in the city are the Military Aviation Museum and the Virginia Museum of Contemporary Art .

There are also great performing arts theaters in Virginia Beach where you can go see a show during your trip. For example, you could go to the Wells Theatre, which is a beautiful venue that dates back to the year 1913.

When planning a day trip to one of the places in this Durham day trips guide, I recommend making a personalized itinerary for yourself before going there instead of deciding what you want to do when you arrive.

Many of the destinations have a large number of sights and if you want to see most of these, you don’t want to waste time between each sight. Also, it is much more comfortable if you already know a restaurant where you can have dinner at the end of the day.

Biden adds stop to North Carolina trip to visit with families of fallen law enforcement officers

WASHINGTON (AP) — President  Joe Biden , who heads to Wilmington, North Carolina, Thursday to talk about the economy, is detouring to Charlotte to meet with the families of law enforcement officers shot to death on the job — just a week after he sat down with the grieving relatives of two cops killed in Upstate New York.

The visit is expected to take place with little fanfare behind closed doors, as the White House aims to respect the privacy of grieving families and avoid the appearance of using their grief for political purposes.  The meeting was expected  at the airport, an option meant to be the least taxing for local law enforcement still reeling from the deaths but who would have a hand in securing the president’s trip.

Once again, Biden will seek to be an empathetic leader for a community reeling from gun violence, while also calling  for stricter rules around firearms  and better funding for law enforcement on the front lines.

Four officers were killed earlier this week in North Carolina, when a wanted man opened fire on a joint agency  task force  that had come to arrest him on a warrant for possession of a firearm as an ex-felon, and fleeing to elude capture. They were: Sam Poloche and William Elliott of the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections; Charlotte-Mecklenburg Officer Joshua Eyer; and Deputy U.S. Marshal Thomas Weeks.

Four other officers were wounded in the gunfire; the suspect was killed. An AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, a 40-caliber handgun and ammunition were found at the scene.

An AR-15 is among the weapons most  often used in mass shootings, and it’s the type of gun Biden is talking about when he says the U.S. should ban “ assault weapons .” Congress passed the most  comprehensive gun safety legislation in decades  in 2022, after a horrific school shooting in Uvalde, Texas. But it didn’t go far enough, Biden often says.

And as he campaigns for the 2024 election, Biden has made curbing gun violence a major campaign platform,  elusive to Democrats even during the Obama era , as he fends off attacks from Republican challenger  Donald Trump that he is soft on crime  and anti-police.

Biden said this week in a statement after the North Carolina killings that the U.S. must “do more to protect our law enforcement officers. That means funding them — so they have the resources they need to do their jobs and keep us safe.”

The violence came just about two weeks after another  fatal shooting of law enforcement officers  in Syracuse, New York; Lieutenant Michael Hoosock and Officer Michael Jensen were killed while looking for a driver who fled a traffic stop. After his speech, Biden met with relatives of both of the officers’ families.

Biden had already been scheduled to come to Syracuse to celebrate  Micron Technology’s plans to build a campus of computer chip factories , but the local police union said officers were still coming to terms with the deaths and weren’t happy with the president’s trip and had hoped he would delay.

On Thursday, Biden will also travel on to Wilmington, where he’s announcing his administration is providing states an additional $3 billion to replace lead pipes across the country, building on $5.8 billion in federal funds for  water infrastructure projects around the country  announced in February.

Money for the pipe replacement comes from one of the administration’s key legislative victories, the  $1 trillion bipartisan infrastructure law  that  Biden  signed in 2021. The infrastructure law includes over $50 billion to upgrade America’s water infrastructure.

“It’s far past time to get the lead out once and for all,″ Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan said Wednesday. “This is a matter of public health, a matter of environmental justice, and a matter of basic human rights.”

Biden and his administration are committed to using all tools available “to achieve a 100% lead-free future for all Americans,” Regan told reporters at a White House briefing. “Every single day we are one step closer to a future where no child has to suffer from the lasting effects of lead exposure.″

The new round of funding will help pay for projects nationwide as Biden seeks to replace all lead pipes in the country.

EPA estimates that North Carolina has 370,000 lead pipes, and $76 million will go to replace them statewide. Biden also will meet with faculty and students at a Wilmington school that replaced a water fountain with high levels of lead with funding from the law.
