Hey mate, this site is awesome! As a s/w product mgr myself, this is very well-done! I was googling for something exactly like this for a while, I've used relive.cc for cycling before but it doesn't support non-sports activities.

David Osterholt

For years I've been looking for something this simple. I've been doing it i powerpoint and it takes forever to do something that looks presentable. This is really great.

GPX Animator

Advanced gpx to video converter, introduction.

GPX Animator generates video from GPX files.

  • supports multiple GPX tracks with mutliple track segments
  • skipping idle parts
  • configurable color, label, width and time offset per track
  • configurable video size, fps and speedup or total video time
  • background map from any public TMS server

Here is a small preview of the new features planned for the next versions of GPX Animator:

  • Redesign the user interface (we know, it's really awful now)
  • Visually set the zoom and bounding boxes
  • Add background music to the video file
  • Easier photo selection

There are much more ideas in the backlog. We would like to implement them in future versions of GPX Animator and plan to release a new version every few months. You can check them out in our GitHub Repository .

GPX Animator v1.8.2

Windows (64 Bit) Windows (32 Bit) macOS Linux Java Archive

ej-technologies provides us a free license for Install4J . Thank you very much for your support!

Important Information

Important information for macOS users: The application file is not signed. If you start GPX Animator for the first time, you'll get a warning and it will not start. You can right click (or ctrl-click) on the application icon and choose "Open" from the context menu, to start GPX Animator. GPX Animator is open source and free to use, we don't earn money with it and thus can't afford to pay the yearly fee of € 100 for the code signing certificate! If you know a better solution, please let us know. Thank you very much for your understanding.

Important information for Windows users: The installer is not signed. If you start the installation, you'll get a warning, but you can go over it and continue the installation. GPX Animator is open source and free to use, we don't earn money with it and thus can't afford to pay the yearly fee of round about € 270 for the certificate! If you know a better solution, please let us know. Thank you very much for your understanding.

Basic usage

GPX Animator can be used in two ways: Either with a GUI (Graphical User Interface), or via CLI (Command Line Interface). Using the GUI is highly recommended for end-users, while CLI usage is perfect for automatization.

If you have used the installer for Windows, macOS, or Linux, you will find a program icon in your application starter menu, which you can click to start GPX Animator. For the OS independent Java Archive, please use the command line to start the GUI.

GPX Animator needs at least Java 17 or newer! We suggest to use AdoptOpenJDK or the Azul Zulu Builds of OpenJDK , but any other distribution should work, too.

For default GUI run:

For program help run:

For direct rendering run:

Command line parameters

Application is crashing with java.lang.outofmemoryerror: java heap space.

Increase java heap memory: java -Xmx1024m -jar gpx-animator-1.8.2-all.jar . If the problem persists, try higher value or check if your GPX trace doesn't cover too big area. If it does then try to specify lower zoom, width and/or height.

Does it run on Linux, Windows, WhateverOS?

GPX Animator will run on any platform where you can run Java.

My GPX is missing point timestamps

No problem. Add --forced-point-time-interval option.

Video is very short or long

Fine-tune speedup or specify exact total time in seconds.

The UI is too small on a high DPI screen

This can happen only, when you use the JAR file directly. It does not happen, when you download the installer and use the GPX Animator icon in your start menu. If you still want to use the JAR file directly and have an older version of Java without high DPI support, use the following command line to set the scaling factor accordingly:

Loading map tiles takes a very long time

To prevent misuse, some map providers have introduced limits. If a certain amount of map data has been loaded within a certain period of time, the provider artificially slows down the loading of further map data.

With most map providers you can register. With some for free, with others for a fee. Then you usually get unlimited access without artificial throttling. Often you have to use an API key for access. See also the previous question about API Keys.

GPX Animator stores the map data for a configurable time on the local computer, so that the corresponding map data must be loaded only once and can be reused for further videos. This reduces time and traffic. By default, this cache is set to 24 hours. In the menu "File > Settings", you can adjust this time.

Can I use the animation for commercial projects?

The animation created by GPX Animator can be used free of charge for commercial projects. If you use a background map, please remember to provide background map attribution. Crediting GPX Animator would be nice.

My photos are not shown in the animation

Photos and tracks need to fit some requirements. The photos must be valid image files in either JPEG or PNG format. The EXIF header needs to contain the date and time, the photo was taken. The track points of the GPX track needs to contain valid date and time stamps, too. GPX Animator matches the time stamps of the photos to the time stamps of the track points to determine when to display the photo in the animation.

If one or more of these requirements are not met or the dates and times do not match, the photos will not show up in the animation.

How do I create the moving map effect?

There are two settings in the General tab: Width x Height and Viewport Width x Height . If the viewport width and height is smaller than the general width and height, the map will not fit in the viewport and start moving automatically. You can adjust the smoothness of the animation by modifying the Inertia value.

Whether you don’t want to download extra programs, Travellerspoint will be a brilliant solution. This web-based app allows you to add photos and dates to each location on the map and shows how many kilometers you’ve traveled from destination to destination. But you have to become a supporting member to save your maps as PNGs and block ads within the editor. In the free plan, you’ll only be able to map out your journey.

If you’re looking for more options available for free, then PictraMap is the right choice. This is an online tool that helps make detailed animated road maps. It offers diverse customization options: music themes, pins, and maps. However, unless you buy a subscription, you can add only 10 locations and make only 2 projects inside this editor. Still, you can change the map style and the marker images for free.

Employ PictraMap to create animated videos of your trips

Prefer using your smartphone to create travel content? There is an interactive travel map animation creator for you - Tripline . This app is available for both Apple and Android smartphones and has simple yet efficient features to draw routes of your trips. With this editor, you can add your photos to every destination marker and make your map more interactive. Then, you can easily share your memorable travel animation online. But this app is not as inclusive - you can’t change the marker and map designs. It’s suitable for planning your next trips or making minimalistic Insta stories rather than creating travel movies for big projects.

Now you know how to make an animated travel map in 4 different ways and can design your own in a couple of clicks. There are various online options that can help you share your travel memories. But if you want the process to be fun and easy, consider SmartSHOW 3D. This program is packed with dedicated tools and features to help you create live images, make exciting presentations, and design animated slideshows with photos. The best animation software lets you bring your 2D and 3D animations to life - and these are the tools we recommend, whether you’re a professional artist or a beginner just getting started.

If you’re serious about animating, Autodesk Maya is our top choice for best animation software. It’s expensive, and best-suited to pro artists and businesses, but this incredibly powerful professional-grade software gives you all the tools and freedom you need to get creative. For a free alternative that’s still perfect for artists and beginners, we recommend Blender.

But there are loads more to choose from. Our expert review team has tested out the best free animation software and professional, paid-for apps. As part of our review process, we explored the design process, tried core features, tools, and assets, and compared system requirements and performance across Windows, Mac, and mobile devices.

Best animation software overall

Autodesk Maya in use

1. Autodesk Maya

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

When we say that Maya is the best animation software you can get it, there is a caveat: this tool means business.

Maya is used to create interactive 3D applications, animated films, TV series, and visual effects. And the price-tag reflects that. Like Adobe, it’s a subscription service, but if you thought the Creative Cloud All Apps package was expensive at $60 per month, try $1875 per year for a single app.

The upside of venturing into Maya is the freedom to create anything you can imagine, as long as you know how to use it (it’s got a steep learning curve). You can create 3D characters, including realistic hair and fur, and imbue them with realistic movements. When it comes to setting the scene, your backdrops can include smoke, fire, sand, snow, explosions, and so on.

Maya runs on Windows, MacOS and Linux. It’s massive, it’s expansive (and expensive), and if you’re aiming to work in the animation industry, it might be a wise investment. For everyone else, though, it could be viewed as overkill.

Best free animation software

Blender in use during our review

Free, open-source, and running across Windows, Mac, and Linux, Blender is massively popular with professional and beginner animators.

This is a 2D and 3D drawing and animation tool. With it, you can render intricate scenes, sculpt models, and even create special effects that can be inserted into a real-life scene thanks to accurate motion tracking and masking.

What really stands out with Blender is the customizability. Every tool can be scripted to make it do exactly what you need it to do. This level of customizability extends to the interface itself, which could lead to a confusing UI, potentially limiting your ability to jump onto another computer running Blender with a different customized layout.

If this sounds like it could be tricky to learn, you wouldn’t be wrong. But it's an incredible, powerful tool with loads of brilliant community support and online tutorials out there for getting the best results from Blender, so it's a strong recommendation from us.

See what our sister site Creative Bloq thought of Blender in its review .

Best 2D animation software

Cartoon Animator in use during our review

3. Cartoon Animator 5

2D animation can be very versatile, and Cartoon Animator 5 is as versatile as you can get. You can bring in static images into it, apply a wireframe rig to a subject, and animate it within the confines of what you can do with a 2D image. However this includes spring dynamics, the ability to use your webcam to apply your facial expression to the animated face you created, which feels similar to Adobe Character Animator,. You can animate clothing and other objects, link objects together to move them as one, warp an object to exaggerate its animation, even perform freeform deformations. That's an impressive toolkit, with the software working with both bitmap graphics and vector images, too.

Best of all, no subscription for you: a perpetual license means you pay a one-off $150 and it's yours to own. For us, the biggest drawback - aside from a somewhat steep learning curve - is that the 2D animation software is only available for Windows users.

Best 3D animation software

Autodesk 3ds Max in use

4. Autodesk 3ds Max

It's not just Maya that Autodesk includes in its line-up of software for animation and modeling. 3ds Max is another great tool (and yes, it has the same hefty price-tag as Maya).

Although 3ds Max and Maya are used by professional animators, 3ds Max’s interface could be seen to be more user-friendly, and it might be better for the creation of outdoor and interior designs - but you can still create animations, and its rigging process is actually easier to manage. You can work with particle and light simulation, there’s a cloth engine and scripting. You’ll find a couple of animation tools, to help you animate humanoid and non-humanoid characters, and the inclusion of motion paths makes it easy to move an object on the screen and get an instant preview of the result.

If there’s one major deciding factor that will seal the deal for you as to which software to use for 3D animation, is the fact Maya is multi-platform, while 3DS Max only works on Windows.

Best animation software for beginners

Adobe Animate during our review

5. Adobe Animate

Our expert review:

Adobe Animate is great animation software for beginners. All the tools you’d expect to animate anything are there, such as keyframes, onion skinning, rigging, the works.

The flexibility is quite impressive, giving you a lot of freedom when it comes to creating unique shapes, but the part we liked the best is the app’s Asset Warp tool. This allows you to add motion to an object that wasn’t originally designed for such a process. Adding a rigging allows Animate to articulate an object over time with ease.

The software is remarkably easy to use, and helps you create even complex animation with little effort. Our only issue is the high subscription price for a beginner tool. It will cost you around $23 a month (depending on the contract you get into). What you get for that though animation is software that is very simple for new starters. If you don't want to pay anything yet, check out Blender instead. It's trickier to use, but it's free.

Best animation app for Android & iOS

Flipaclip during our review

6. FlipaClip

If you’re into 2D creations. FlipaClip is the best animation app for Android and iOS.

The app is remarkably simple, boasts a clean interface and a small number of tools, like a lasso, brush, eraser, etc. But its power lies in its simplicity. You can create animations quickly, duplicate objects, move them around and distort them, while using the onion skinning feature to control their movements exactly. You can record audio, incorporate sound, and have various export options.

On top of that, there’s a thriving community which you can interact with and explore, which also includes templates and tutorials. And all of this comes mostly for free. There are limitations in the number of tools you can use, export options, and watermarking, but if you want to lift those restrictions, you can do so for $6 a month or $30 for the whole year.

Best animation app for iPad

Toonsquid during our review

7. Toonsquid

This is a surprise addition for us, as we expected to chat about a different iPad exclusive, but everywhere we turned, Toonsquid was being recommended as a better alternative, so we decided to take this advice to heart, and how glad we were we did.

The tools are pretty familiar if you’re used to any drawing or animating software, including vector shapes, motion paths, customisable presets, the works. The timeline is at the bottom of the screen, and doesn’t take too much real estate, allowing you to focus on your canvas at any given time.

It’s definitely trickier to use than FlipaClip, but it’s the way to go if you’re aiming for a sleeker, more professional-looking output. It's not free, but it only costs a one-off $10 fee. As such, that’s cheaper than a single month for Adobe Animate.

Best animation software: FAQs

What is the best animation software.

This is a highly subjective question, and will depend on your budget, platform of choice and skill level. A professional should probably go for Maya, but Blender or Toonsquid could be ideal for newcomers or those on a budget.

What is the easiest animation software to use?

Out of the seven packages we’ve explored here, we’d have to say that FlipaClip is the easiest one of the bunch, and as the basic option is free, it also fits all budgets. Adobe Animate is also an exceptionally easy to use, and while it does need a subscription, its simplicity makes it our top choice for beginners.

How to choose the best animation software for you

Why you can trust TechRadar We spend hours testing every product or service we review, so you can be sure you’re buying the best. Find out more about how we test.

When deciding which animation software is best for you, there are several considerations to make.

First, what type of animation are you creating? While some tools excel at 2D animation, others are designed to be the best 3D modeling software for professionals. So choose a tool that helps you bring your visions to life - and one that's at the right skill-level for you.

Some easier to use software might even be more expensive than a more complex one (we’re looking at you, full-priced version of FlipaClip). And of course, it will depend on which machine you’ll be working on.

You'll want to check system requirements of your chosen animation software, as some work across all platforms, while others are limited to specific operating systems. Certain software for animation can be resource-intensive and require more power than a standard laptop or computer. To help with this, we reviewed the best laptops for Blender

How we test the best animation software

Our team of expert reviewers have tested hundreds of software packages, including the best digital art and drawing software , best graphic design software , and the best interior design software .

This helps us find our way around an interface quickly, as innovative many of them are, there are aspects of any software that is similar, no matter which app we’re reviewing. Thankfully, there are also many unique and interesting features that come to the fore once we get passed the basics.

Artistic applications are more unique, so we set about creating projects from scratch, experimenting with as many features as we can to get a good feel for how the software works, and how easy it is to perform each task. It helps that as well as reviewing these packages, we also use many professionally, giving us a good idea of what works, how it should work, and efficient it is - or should be.

Pillars of Creation Star in New Visualization from NASA’s Hubble and Webb Telescopes

Mosaic of the Pillars of Creation visualization model, composed of 4 rectangular strips oriented 45 degrees clockwise from vertical. Strips alternate between Hubble and Webb views of the visualization model, with each strip labeled: “Hubble” at lower right corners of first and third strips; “Webb” at upper left corners of the second and fourth strips. Webb strips have drop shadows that make it look like they are overlaid on top of larger Hubble image. Mosaic shows 3 vertical structures (pillars) of thick smoke-like material. Pillar edges are glowing, with thin wisps of material moving away into space. In Hubble strips, pillars are dark brown and opaque, on greenish blue background. In Webb strips, pillars are bright orange to brown with a distinct area of bright red at the top of middle pillar. A red star appears at the tip of a peak in the left pillar and the background is deep blue.

Made famous in 1995 by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, the Pillars of Creation in the heart of the Eagle Nebula have captured imaginations worldwide with their arresting, ethereal beauty.

Now, NASA has released a new 3D visualization of these towering celestial structures using data from NASA's Hubble and James Webb space telescopes. This is the most comprehensive and detailed multiwavelength movie yet of these star-birthing clouds.

"By flying past and amongst the pillars, viewers experience their three-dimensional structure and see how they look different in the Hubble visible-light view versus the Webb infrared-light view," explained principal visualization scientist Frank Summers of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) in Baltimore, who led the movie development team for NASA's Universe of Learning . "The contrast helps them understand why we have more than one space telescope to observe different aspects of the same object."

Image: Hubble Model and Webb Model

Two visualizations using Hubble and Webb data. The left image is from visible-light data collected by Hubble. The right visualization is from infrared-light data collected by Webb.

The four Pillars of Creation, made primarily of cool molecular hydrogen and dust, are being eroded by the fierce winds and punishing ultraviolet light of nearby hot, young stars. Finger-like structures larger than the solar system protrude from the tops of the pillars. Within these fingers can be embedded, embryonic stars. The tallest pillar stretches across three light-years, three-quarters of the distance between our Sun and the next nearest star.

The movie takes visitors into the three-dimensional structures of the pillars. Rather than an artistic interpretation, the video is based on observational data from a science paper led by Anna McLeod, an associate professor at the University of Durham in the United Kingdom. McLeod also served as a scientific advisor on the movie project.

"The Pillars of Creation were always on our minds to create in 3D. Webb data in combination with Hubble data allowed us to see the Pillars in more complete detail," said production lead Greg Bacon of STScI. "Understanding the science and how to best represent it allowed our small, talented team to meet the challenge of visualizing this iconic structure."

In Webb strips, pillars are bright orange to brown with a distinct area of bright red at the top of middle pillar. A red star appears at the tip of a peak in the left pillar and the background is deep blue.

The new visualization helps viewers experience how two of the world's most powerful space telescopes work together to provide a more complex and holistic portrait of the pillars. Hubble sees objects that glow in visible light, at thousands of degrees. Webb's infrared vision, which is sensitive to cooler objects with temperatures of just hundreds of degrees, pierces through obscuring dust to see stars embedded in the pillars.

"When we combine observations from NASA’s space telescopes across different wavelengths of light, we broaden our understanding of the universe," said Mark Clampin, Astrophysics Division director at NASA Headquarters in Washington. "The Pillars of Creation region continues to offer us new insights that hone our understanding of how stars form. Now, with this new visualization, everyone can experience this rich, captivating landscape in a new way."

Produced for NASA by STScI with partners at Caltech/IPAC, and developed by the AstroViz Project of NASA's Universe of Learning, the 3D visualization is part of a longer, narrated video that combines a direct connection to the science and scientists of NASA's Astrophysics missions with attention to the needs of an audience of youth, families, and lifelong learners. It enables viewers to explore fundamental questions in science, experience how science is done, and discover the universe for themselves.

Several stages of star formation are highlighted in the visualization. As viewers approach the central pillar, they see at its top an embedded, infant protostar glimmering bright red in infrared light. Near the top of the left pillar is a diagonal jet of material ejected from a newborn star. Though the jet is evidence of star birth, viewers can't see the star itself. Finally, at the end of one of the left pillar's protruding "fingers" is a blazing, brand-new star.

Video: Pillars of Creation Visualization

A bonus product from this visualization is a new 3D printable model of the Pillars of Creation . The base model of the four pillars used in the visualization has been adapted to the STL file format, so that viewers can download the model file and print it out on 3D printers. Examining the structure of the pillars in this tactile and interactive way adds new perspectives and insights to the overall experience.

More visualizations and connections between the science of nebulas and learners can be explored through other products produced by NASA's Universe of Learning such as ViewSpace , a video exhibit that is currently running at almost 200 museums and planetariums across the United States. Visitors can go beyond video to explore the images produced by space telescopes with interactive tools now available for museums and planetariums.

NASA's Universe of Learning materials are based upon work supported by NASA under award number NNX16AC65A to the Space Telescope Science Institute, working in partnership with Caltech/IPAC, Pasadena, California, Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Jet Propulsion Laboratory, La Cañada Flintridge, California.

The image is divided horizontally by an undulating line between a cloudscape forming a nebula along the bottom portion and a comparatively clear upper portion. Speckled across both portions is a starfield, showing innumerable stars of many sizes. The smallest of these are small, distant, and faint points of light. The largest of these appear larger, closer, brighter, and more fully resolved with 8-point diffraction spikes. The upper portion of the image is blueish, and has wispy translucent cloud-like streaks rising from the nebula below. The orangish cloudy formation in the bottom half varies in density and ranges from translucent to opaque. The stars vary in color, the majority of which have a blue or orange hue. The cloud-like structure of the nebula contains ridges, peaks, and valleys – an appearance very similar to a mountain range. Three long diffraction spikes from the top right edge of the image suggest the presence of a large star just out of view.

TSA checkpoints at Newark Liberty International Airport now equipped with new state-of-the-art 3-D checkpoint scanners to improve explosives detection in time for summer travel season

travel 3d animation

NEWARK, N.J. – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is prepared for the highest passenger volumes the agency has seen at airport security checkpoints nationwide during this summer’s travel season, which runs through Labor Day, and that includes individuals who are planning to fly out of Newark Liberty International Airport.

Since mid-May, TSA has seen multiple days break into the top 10 busiest days in the agency’s 22-year history. Typically, TSA had been screening approximately 2.5 million people per day nationwide, however since last month, the number of people screened has increased by several hundred thousand per day, with TSA officers screening more than 3 million individuals at checkpoints for the very first time.

“Here at Newark we already have seen a notable increase in checkpoint volume,” said Thomas Carter, TSA’s Federal Security Director for New Jersey. “We have been in close coordination with our airport, airline and travel partners, and we are more than ready to handle this summer’s increased travel volumes as we head into the July 4th holiday travel period,” he said.

“Knowing that travel volume will be high is why it is vital to give yourself plenty of time to park or return a rental car, check in with your airline to check bags and prepare for the security checkpoint. If you find yourself in a checkpoint line, travelers can save time by removing items from their pockets and placing them in a carry-on bag, instead of putting items directly into bins at the conveyor belt. My advice is to get into the airport two hours prior to your scheduled departure time.”

TSA is has installed eleven new computed tomography (CT) scanners in Terminal B in time for the summer travel season. These new state-of-the-art advanced CT scanners provide 3-D imaging that provide for TSA officers to enhance explosives detection capabilities for screening carry-on items.

“TSA is committed to getting the best technology to enhance security and improve the screening experience,” Carter said.  “Our officers’ use of CT technology substantially improves our threat detection capability at the checkpoint. The CT technology applies advanced algorithms for the detection of explosives, including liquid explosives and other threat items.”

The system applies sophisticated algorithms for the detection of explosives by creating a 3-D image that can be viewed and rotated 360 degrees on three axes for thorough visual image analysis by a transportation security officer. This new technology creates such a clear image of a bag’s contents that the system can automatically detect explosives, including liquids, by shooting hundreds of images with an X-ray camera spinning around the conveyor belt to provide TSA officers with the three-dimensional views of the contents of a carry-on bag.

It takes a few extra seconds for the TSA officer to view the image and rotate it to get a better understanding of its contents, however in most instances, rotating the image allows the TSA officer to identify an item inside the bag and clear it without a need to open it for inspection. Checkpoint CT technology results in fewer bag checks. However, if a bag requires further screening, a TSA officer will inspect it to ensure that a threat item is not contained inside.

As an added passenger convenience, with the use of these new CT units, travelers may now leave their laptops and other electronic devices in their carry-on bags along with their small 3-1-1 liquids .

Since traveler volume will be high this summer, it is even more important for travelers to come to the airport prepared to go through the security screening process. Passengers need to make sure that there are no prohibited items among their carry-on items. Prohibited items will result in a need for TSA officers to open and inspect a bag to determine what triggered the alarm. This process takes a few minutes and will slow down someone’s trip through the checkpoint.

When packing, it is recommended to start to pack with an empty bag, so that travelers are well aware of the contents of their bags. Prior to packing that empty bag, individuals can check TSA’s “What Can I Bring?” tool to know what is prohibited. Individuals who are heading to the beach, may wonder how to pack their sunscreen. Any liquids, sunscreen containers and alcohol over 3.4 ounces must be packed in a checked bag. Liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes are allowed in carry-on bags as long as each item is 3.4 ounces or less and placed in one quart-sized bag . Each passenger is limited to one quart-size bag of liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes.

It is important for individuals who own firearms to remember that they are prohibited to pass through security checkpoints, even if a passenger has a concealed carry permit or is in a constitutional carry jurisdiction. Passengers may travel with a firearm, but it must be secured in the passenger’s checked baggage; packed unloaded; locked in a hard-sided case; and declared to the airline when checking in at the airline ticket counter. If a passenger brings a firearm to the security checkpoint on their person or in their carry-on luggage, TSA will contact local law enforcement to safely unload and take possession of the firearm. Law enforcement may also arrest or cite the passenger, depending on local law. TSA may impose a civil penalty up to $15,000 when weapons are intercepted, and passengers will lose TSA PreCheck¼ eligibility.

TSA PreCheckÂź members should make sure that their known traveler number (KTN) is in their airline  reservation. It is essential that airline reservations have the passenger’s correct KTN, full name and date of birth so they can receive the program’s benefits. Those who fly with multiple airlines should ensure their KTN is updated in each of their airline profiles every time they travel. TSA PreCheck passengers are low-risk travelers who do not need to remove shoes, belts, 3-1-1 liquids, food, laptops and light jackets at the TSA checkpoint. TSA’s wait time standards for TSA PreCheck lanes are under 10 minutes and less than 30 minutes for standard lanes. Travelers may visit https://www.tsa.gov/precheck for more information about enrolling or renewing in TSA PreCheck and to find enrollment locations and pricing information for all TSA PreCheck enrollment providers.

“It is also important to remember that our TSA officers are working throughout the summer, including the upcoming July 4th holiday, so respect TSA and other frontline airport and airline employees,” Carter said. “Our officers along with all frontline airport and airline employees and local law enforcement, are working together to ensure safe and secure travel. Consider offering them a kind word of thanks.”

TSA also reminds travelers that starting on May 7, 2025, if you plan to use your state-issued ID or driver’s license to fly within the U.S., make sure you have a REAL ID or another acceptable form of ID. If you are not sure if you have a REAL ID, check with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission .  For questions on acceptable IDs, visit TSA’s web site. “Put REAL ID on your summer to do list,” Carter recommended.

Travelers can contact TSA with questions may contact TSA by sending a text directly to 275-872 (“AskTSA”) on any mobile device or over social media by sending a message to @AskTSA on X or Facebook Messenger. An automated virtual assistant is available 24/7 to answer commonly asked questions, and AskTSA staff are available 365 days a year from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET for more complicated questions. Travelers may also reach the TSA Contact Center at 866-289-9673. An automated service is available 24/7.

TSA encourages all passengers to remain vigilant. If You See Something. Say SomethingÂź.

What Does Anxiety Look Like? How Pixar Created the ‘Inside Out 2’ Villain

The breakout character was initially envisioned as a monster. But when the filmmakers saw it wasn’t working, they found their way to a softer antagonist.

Eight quick sketches show the head of an orange character with small pupils in big eyes, a wide squiggly mouth and a fountain of hair.

By Reggie Ugwu

“Inside Out 2” delivers a fresh crop of emotions for Riley, the film’s 13-year-old protagonist, who begins the story at the cusp of puberty. Anxiety, Embarrassment, Envy and Ennui join the core emotions from the original film: Joy, Anger, Fear, Disgust and Sadness.

The most consequential of the new arrivals is Anxiety, whose well-meaning but chaotic influence pushes Riley and the other emotions to the edge of mental and social catastrophe. Voiced by Maya Hawke and bursting with discomfiting character details — unruly hair, bulging eyes, a grand-piano grin — Anxiety emerges as the hit sequel’s breakout star and unstable center of gravity.

In a series of interviews, the team at Pixar that brought the character to life — the director Kelsey Mann, character designer Deanna Marsigliese and animation supervisors Evan Bonifacio and Dovi Anderson — broke down Anxiety’s anatomy and discussed taking inspiration from psychology research, the bird kingdom and the produce aisle. These are edited excerpts from the conversations.

What was the initial idea for the character? Who was Anxiety?

KELSEY MANN, director Initially, she was a shape-shifter. She was going to be this person who was lying about who she was. I wanted somebody that was almost made of clay. Kind of a monster character, almost like a lizard. But we eventually got rid of that twist because it made the movie really complicated.

DEANNA MARSIGLIESE, character designer By the time she came to me, other ideas had already been tried, but they weren’t working in the story. They were a little bit more sinister, more antagonistic. I thought maybe we could try to soften the character, see if we could do something a little more approachable. I did about a dozen-and-a-half, maybe two dozen thumbnails — very tiny sketches. After a few days, I chose 10 and put them in front of Kelsey. He chose the first one I’d ever done.

MANN They were just fun. You don’t want the audience to root for the antagonist, but you do want them to enjoy when they’re onscreen. Whenever the earlier version of the character showed up, I just didn’t like watching it.

Where did you look for inspiration?

MANN Deanna had a really great idea to link her a little to Fear, because they are kind of distant cousins.

MARSIGLIESE Every time I looked up a definition for anxiety, it always started with “A fear of.” “Anxiety is a fear of what may happen.” So I started to think, “OK, Fear and Anxiety are different, but clearly they’re related,” so I designed her with that in mind.

MANN The more research we did, the more we realized that Anxiety is really there to help and protect us, which encouraged us to lean into a more fun design. Jason Deamer, the production designer, pointed out that the male emotions seemed to be more stylized. Anger is a square and Fear is this kind of raw nerve. I remember him saying it’d be really great if we could do that for a female character.

MARSIGLIESE Anxiety and Fear share those really expressive, hypervigilant eyes. That was tent pole No. 1. But where Fear is really vertical in design, I decided that for contrast, Anxiety would be more horizontal. That’s where we got that really broad mouth.

MANN I remember one of the animators doing some birdlike references for the fast little movements of her eyes.

EVAN BONIFACIO, animation supervisor The concept was that somebody who was anxious would be constantly scanning the room trying to look for problems and plan for the future.

MARSIGLIESE To me, it’s almost like a kettle. There’s this simmering, constant nervous energy just below the surface that very gradually builds. And like the steam in a kettle, it’s going to need avenues for release.

MANN She’s the opposite of Ennui. Where Ennui is like, “I barely need to move unless I have to,” Anxiety is just constantly moving. We always said she’s got restless leg syndrome.

BONIFACIO The animators did a lot of explorations of how she would move in the environment that ended up influencing the story. Her apologetic nature is an example — the idea that she’s touching the console and taking over headquarters but she’s sorry but she can’t help herself.

What other physical traits did you use to express her personality?

MARSIGLIESE I chose a lot of features that would support nervous tics and habits, her clothing being one of them.

MANN I remember somebody had the great idea that she’s going to have a really itchy sweater. If you look at Sadness, the sweater, it’s very warm. It’s very cozy. It feels like it’s cashmere. But Anxiety, she has this itchy wool that kind of added to her anxiousness.

MARSIGLIESE She’s got the high collar, which I imagine she’d be tugging on a lot. It’s a little suffocating. She’s got stretched-out sleeves, which is her doing. She’s got her pants hiked up, which isn’t the most comfortable. And her boots are just a little too tight. Everything is built to aggravate her just a little bit.

MANN Her hair was a big part of the character, too. It’s wild even when she’s trying to present herself as together, like she’s trying to tame the chaos. The simulation department, who does hair and cloth, added a lot.

MARSIGLIESE I used the top of a carrot as a reference. The way the leafy bits exit the carrot top really stiff and strong but then get flimsy and light toward the tips. I wanted it to be a conduit for all her trembling and twitching.

BONIFACIO The hair itself had a bunch of poses, probably five to eight: Stiff and straight up, a more relaxed groom, a softer groom, a wiry groom. If Anxiety screamed in the script, the animators could say, “Go from a soft groom to a stiff, more upright groom at this exact second.”

What was the hardest part of the character to animate?

BONIFACIO The mouth. Building the rig — the thing that’s underneath the skin of the character that allows the animators to pose out the arms, the head and the face.

MARSIGLIESE The teeth were a big thing. They were meant to rattle and move around the mouth. It’s unsettling. A lot of my choices were about asymmetry: being off-center, off-kilter. She was put together in a way to make you be like, “Are you OK? Are you going to fall apart? Can you stand up ?” I really wanted her to make the other emotions and the audience feel a little bit nervous by proxy.

DOVI ANDERSON, animation supervisor We were curious what it was going to look like when the character was talking. Are the teeth going to be moving too much? How can we make it so it’s not too hard to follow the dialogue?

BONIFACIO If you look at the drawings, there’s no denture. There’s no jawbone. It’s just this sort of big, open shape. We had to figure out a way to give her a wide range of expressions but still have the teeth anchored to something.

ANDERSON A standard mouth rig has like 300 controls. For Anxiety, we probably had 1,000.

BONIFACIO There were two full sets of controls for the mouth, and each tooth could be controlled individually if needed.

ANDERSON Even though she had a very challenging design, the fundamentals of animating her were the same as anyone else. The animators are performers — it’s their job to figure out what the performance is going to be. What am I? What is the subtext? What’s going on inside the character’s head? How do I communicate that to the audience? Many would go into an acting room, turn on a camera and act the scene out with their own human anatomy and limitations. Then the question is, “How do I translate that into this design?”

What’s your favorite Anxiety scene?

MANN There’s a scene where Riley experiences a panic attack at the end of the film. I wanted Anxiety to come in and take over the console and drive too hard on Riley.

ANDERSON She starts moving really fast and turns into this whirlwind. He ended up animating 106 Anxieties in about eight shots. In one shot, there might have been upward of 10 or 15 Anxieties — multiple arms and heads going around in circles.

MARSIGLIESE Anxiety for some people is really debilitating; they’re not activated by it, they’re paralyzed. Other people get really activated and kinetic. It was important that we start her at one extreme and then walk her to the other, so that everyone with anxiety could see themselves and their behavior in her.

MANN There’s a really great line in that scene where she says, “I’m sorry. I’m so sorry, Joy. I was just trying to protect her.”

MARSIGLIESE I think there’s a single tear.

MANN I’m really proud of the way it turned out, because it takes the entire team of artists and filmmakers at the studio to pull that off.
