Royal Caribbean Ships By Age: Newest To Oldest Complete List

Being a frequent cruiser since 2013, I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing the evolution of Royal Caribbean’s fleet over the years. I know its exciting to learn about the older and newer ships and exploring their respective amenities.

Currently, Royal Caribbean boasts a fleet of 26 cruise ships, with two more planned to be launched in 2024. Each ship has its own charm, amenities, and unique appeal, to satisfy guest’s preferences based on their age and design.

As Royal Caribbean plans to launch some modern ships next year, I know it’s hard to keep track of which ship is the newest. But don’t worry.

Grab a coffee and sit back because I’ll be discussing each and everything about the Royal Caribbean ships by age.

So let’s get started.

Table of Contents

List of Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships By Age

I’ve compiled a list of Royal Caribbean ships from newest to oldest. Also, for you ease and better understanding, the class category of each ship is included.

Note: The ships marked with an asterisk (*) indicate those that are yet to make their maiden voyages. These include Star of the Seas, Utopia of the Seas, and Icon of the Seas.

1. Wonder Of The Seas

Wonder Of The Seas

  • Launched: 2022
  • Class: Oasis
  • Guest capacity: 6,988

The Wonder of the Seas holds the flagship title for Royal Caribbean, being the boldest and biggest cruise ship to ever grace the ocean waves.

As the fifth Oasis-class vessel in Royal Caribbean’s fleet, it’s more than just a mere attraction. This mega-ship boasts 16 guest decks, 20 restaurants, four pools, and 2,867 cabins.

Setting itself apart from other Oasis-Class ships, it stands as the sole vessel featuring onboard Central Park with more than 10,000 plants and flowers

This mega-ship costs $1,350,000,000 to build, and it features eight distinct neighborhoods, including the new and exclusive Suite Neighbourhood. The Wonder of the Seas is one of Royal Caribbean’s top ships, sailing in the Mediterranean from Barcelona and Rome and in the Caribbean from Port Canaveral, Florida.

2. Odyssey Of The Seas

Odyssey Of The Sea

The Odyssey of the Seas proudly stands as the first Quantum Ultra-class cruise ship to sail in the US. It’s the second newest addition to Royal Caribbean’s fleet, and best ship for couples.

Having personally experienced this cruise, I can confidently say that this ship is a hub of non-stop action, offering the Suite accommodation options and a huge variety of activities and venues.

It’s perfect in every aspect, catering to comfort, convenience, and entertainment seekers alike. Despite being slightly smaller than Oasis-class ships, the Odyssey of the Seas is sure to appeal to all sorts of tastes.

The Odyssey of the Seas explores the Mediterranean from Rome and also sails the Caribbean from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

I love the elevated approach this ship takes to the cruise line’s Royal Promenade. For instance, designing a stylish area that looks fantastic yet remains thrilling.

Royal Caribbean Ships From The 2010s

Now, in this section, I’ll discuss the ships launched between 2010 and 2019. These are all fairly new but not from the above ones.

1. Spectrum Of The Seas

Spectrum Of The Seas

  • Launched: 2019
  • Class: Quantum-Ultra
  • Guest capacity: 5,622

The Spectrum of the Seas stands as the pioneering vessel in Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Ultra Class. It’s the award-winning Quantum Class, known for its adventurous offerings.

Amazingly, it boasts slightly larger dimensions than her sister ships and has been designed specifically for the China and Asia Markets.

The primary language on board is Mandarin, and signage is in simplified Chinese, followed by English.

Cruising from Shanghai and Singapore, the Spectrum of the Seas primarily offers short trips to Malaysia and Thailand, along with some week-long voyages to Japan.

The Spectrum of the Seas doesn’t seem to present a significant upgrade compared to previous Quantum-class ships like the Anthem of the Seas.

This might be why this class was dubbed Quantum Ultra rather than receiving an entirely new name.

  • 19 dining options
  • Multiple Bars and Lounges
  • RipCord by iFLY skydiving simulator
  • North Star observation capsule
  • Flowrider surf simulator
  • Star Moment karaoke
  • Seaplex activities center with Bumper cars, roller skating, basketball court, circus school, and more

2. Symphony Of The Seas

Symphony Of The Seas

  • Launched: 2017
  • Guest capacity: 6,680

Symphony of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s fourth huge Oasis-Class ship, made in 2018. When it first set sail, everyone was like, “Whoa, that’s huge!”

It’s like five times bigger than the Titanic ! And they’ve got these fancy Suites that come with amazing perks.

There’s a lot to do on there, like lots of pools, a surfing thing called FlowRider, a zip line, walls for rock climbing, and the crazy slide, the Ultimate Abyss!

The symphony features numerous food spots and different rooms for everyone. It’s like a whole city on the water!

Starting from Miami, Florida, the Symphony of the Seas takes you around the Caribbean. It’s a real adventure!

  • 7 distinct neighborhoods
  • 4 pools, 10 whirlpools
  • 20 dining options
  • The Ultimate Abyss water slide
  • 2 FlowRider surf simulators
  • 2 Rock Climbing Walls
  • Three multi-story water slides
  • Basketball court

3. Harmony Of The Seas

 Harmony Of The Seas

  • Launched: 2016
  • Class: Oasis
  • Guest capacity: 6,687

Harmony of the Seas was the first Oasis-Class ship to launch in six years and the company’s third one. Most amazingly, it was named after the Harmony Module on the International Space Station.

This ship also held the title of the largest cruise ship in the world until her sister, Symphony of the Seas, launched.

Some of the features on Harmony of the Seas had only been available on Quantum-class ships before, such as Jamie’s Italian and Wonderland.

And guess what? Harmony of the Seas was the first ship in the fleet to introduce the Ultimate Abyss, the tallest slide at sea at that time. In addition, it offers Junior and Grand Suites.

With all the entertainment options you need, the Deck plans of this ship also offer Serene and Adult-Only spots.

  • Three multi-story waterslide

4. Ovation Of The Seas

Ovation of the seas

  • Launched: 2016
  • Class: Quantum
  • Guest capacity: 4,905

Ovation of the Seas is one of the coolest ships worldwide, being the third in the Quantum-class series. Its name was announced on September 18, 2014, when they started building it.

Similar to its sibling ships, Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas, it offers fun stuff like the RipCord by iFly skydiving simulator, the North Star capsule, bumper cars, and trapeze classes.

The ship’s deck plans have both family-friendly and adults-only areas, ensuring there’s something for everyone when it comes to entertainment.

In short, it’s a fantastic mega-ship with high-tech fun, but sometimes, it can get crowded in the dining and entertainment spots.

  • Rock Climbing wall
  • Ripcord by iFly
  • Pool and Whirlpools

5. Anthem Of The Seas

Anthem of the seas

  • Launched: 2015

Anthem of the Seas is the second big ship in Royal Caribbean’s Quantum Class. It’s exciting and feels like a fun Las Vegas hotel.

What’s great about it is that it’s modern, but also really fun. Similar to its other ship buddies, Quantum of the Seas and Ovation of the Seas, it has cool stuff like a skydiving simulator, a big capsule you can ride, bumper cars, and trapeze classes.

It’s made for families and adults, so everyone can find something fun to do. In short, it’s a super fun and modern ship, but sometimes the places to eat and have fun might be a bit crowded.

  • 17 Dining Options

6. Quantum Of The Seas

Quantum Of the seas

  • Launched: 2014

Quantum of the Seas is a Quantum-Class cruise ship. When it was made in 2014, it was the third biggest in the world.  Right now, it sails in Alaska and Australia. It’s different because Royal Caribbean didn’t want to make the biggest ship in about 10 years. The outside of the ship is attention-grabbing, and inside, there’s a lot of fun stuff to do, too.   The cabins on this ship are pretty cool and surprising. Overall, it’s great for cruising in places where indoor spaces matter more. But the food quality isn’t consistent. You might find some good stuff, but it takes effort to find the best.

7. Allure Of The Seas

Allure of the seas

  • Launched: 2010
  • Guest capacity: 6,780

The allure of the Seas is an Oasis-class cruise ship that holds the title of the World’s largest passenger ship upon its launch in November 2009 for six years.

What I like most about Allure of the Seas is that she is breathtaking both in scale and ambition, yet it never feels overwhelming.

Inspired by Coney Island, the outdoor Boardwalk neighborhood features ships, a carousel, and the AquaTheater.

She was set to receive major upgrades, including new features like Ultimate Abyss slide and Perfect Storm waterslides. Unfortunately, due to the global shutdown, these plans were canceled.

Each area on board offers a distinct ambiance and atmosphere, almost like experiencing seven different ships in one. In short, this ship caters to every type of cruiser.

Allure of the Seas sails out of Orlando and Miami on Bahamas cruises, typically for 3 or 4 nights.

  • 7 neighborhoods
  • 24 dining options
  • Multiple bars and lounges
  • 4 pools and 10 whirlpools
  • 2 rock climbing walls
  • Ice-skating rink
  • Full-service Vitality at Sea Spa and a state-of-the-art fitness center

Royal Caribbean Ships from the 2000s

1. oasis of the seas.

Oasis of the seas

  • Launched: 2009

Oasis of the Seas was a real game-changer for Royal Caribbean, which was the first ship to launch a c revolution. It introduces even more new thrills for couples and kids of all games.

Surpassing the Freedom Class cruise ships, it claimed the title of the largest cruise ship in the world at that time.

The ship’s Royal Promenade, lacking outside windows, can give off a mall-like vibe as you step on board. It entirely redefined the concept of a cruise ship and essentially pioneered the idea of a super ship.

Packed with eateries, shops selling designer items, logo apparel, and even a Starbucks, it creates an impression more akin to a shopping district than a traditional cruise ship.

Another amazing thing about this ship is its decks, which are laid out, allowing easy access to tons of amenities without the need to spend all day on the elevator. In short, Oasis of the Seas is packed with amenities, restaurants, and bars and is manageable despite its size. However, you should expect lines at popular venues.

  • Surf Simulator
  • An aquatic amphitheater
  • A moving bar
  • Multiple night clubs
  • Miniature golf course
  • Five swimming poos
  • Youth zones
  • Nurseries for children
  • A Karaoke club
  • Comedy club
  • Volleyball and basketball courts

2. Independence Of The Seas

Independence of the seas

  • Launched: 2008
  • Class: Freedom
  • Guest capacity: 4,560

This third and last Freedom-class ship has always been of great importance in the fleet. It gave Royal Caribbean an injection of new adventures on gateways. It was also with the British cruisers, but before the Anthem of the Seas took over, Independence of the Seas was the Royal Caribbean ship for cruises out of Southampton. In May 2018, the ship, affectionately known as Indy among its numerous fans, underwent an extensive refurbishment that introduced a range of new features onboard. Independence of the Seas really excels in its kid-friendly offerings along with the extraordinary amount on offer for youngsters. However, many cruisers complain as the Food quality varies considerably, upcharging for certain activities.

  • 13 dining options
  • 4 pools, 6 whirlpools
  • FlowRider surf simulator
  • The Perfect Storm℠ dueling waterslides
  • Laser Tag: Battle for Planet Z
  • Escape Room: The Observatorium

Liberty of the seas

  • Launched: 2007

Liberty of the Seas is Royal Caribbean’s second Freedom-Class cruise ship, which entered the fleet in May 2007. It was initially announced that she would be called Endeavour of the Seas, but later, this name was changed.

The ship’s main area is the Royal Promenade. It’s four decks tall, featuring glass staircases and lit-up bridges in cool colors like purple and blue. Here, you’ll find lots of people looking for deals and fun character parades.

There are tons of family-friendly amenities on the Liberty of the Seas Deck Plan.

Even though it launched in 2007, Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas still feels modern and up-to-date in its public spaces.

  • FlowRider onboard wave generator for surfing
  • Interactive water play area for children
  • Full-sized volleyball/basketball court
  • Large fitness center
  • Two cantilevered whirlpools offer unimpeded views of the sea.
  • Modular conference center for business meetings

4. Freedom Of The Seas

Freedom of the seas

  • Launched: 2006
  • Guest capacity: 4,515

Freedom of the Seas was launched in May 2006 and became the largest ever passenger ship to be built at that time, taking the title from Cunard’s Queen Mary 2.

Proudly, she is the namesake of Royal Caribbean’s Freedom Class.

While it’s not the largest in Royal Caribbean anymore (that title goes to the newer Oasis-class ships), its public areas still feel fresh and modern.  One of its standout features is the FlowRider surf simulator, introduced first on this ship and later added to all Royal Caribbean vessels, with some older ships retrofitted to include it as well. The Freedom of the Seas sails from Miami and Fort Lauderdale, offering cruises on both sides of the Caribbean. It includes shorter itineraries along with week-long sailings.

  • Casino Play
  • The Perfect Storm
  • Hour Room Service
  • Lime and Coconut
  • Onboard gratuities
  • Shore Excursions
  • Splashaway Bay Kids Aqua Park

Jewel of the seas

  • Launched: 2004
  • Class: Radiance
  • Guest capacity: 2,702

Jewel of the Seas is a Radiance class ship that made its debut in the spring of 2004. Carrying a maximum of 2700 plus passengers, it was the fourth and last limb on Royal Caribbean’s Radiance-class family tree. Arguably, it’s also the last mid-sized ship to ever be built for the cruise line. It’s perfect for those cruisers who prefer a traditional cruising experience rather than bells and whistles.

It’s a laid-back ship, where guests savor unhurried meals and a couple of G&Ts in the evening and enjoy nostalgic entertainment.

It caters to three different cruising areas, attracting younger crowds on shorter Caribbean trips and appealing to slightly older passengers on scenic, longer voyages to Northern Europe and New England-Canada.

Mariner of the Seas is the fifth ship in Royal Caribbean’s Voyager class, starting its journey in 2004. She was already a fun-packed ship over 20 years ago, but her recent Amplification added even more awesome features.

Mariner of the Seas offers an affordable Caribbean cruise experience with the right amount of excitement to make your short cruise vacation more memorable.

Its deck plans are so intelligently designed that make this small Royal Caribbean ship feel just the right size.

Guests can move about almost anywhere without crowds, and elevators zip up and down to pools, the gym, and the spa, and access other amenities.

  • Escape Room
  • Bamboo Room
  • Spa and fitness area

7. Serenade Of The Seas

serenade of the seas

  • Guest capacity: 2,476

Serenade of the Seas is the third Radiance-class ship for Royal Caribbean, which is famous for its plenty of amenities despite being a mid-sized ship. It’s a good choice for a wide range of travelers, including couples, singles, families, and groups. This ship differentiates from other Radiance-class ships due to its three acres of exterior glass employed in its design, including glass elevators with ocean views.

There are remarkable views from nearly every public room, and the ship is also very easy to navigate.

Guests can enjoy great food at various restaurants and plenty of fun activities, including sports and spa treatments.

  • A visual feast
  • Elevated sights
  • Lounge on the Lookout
  • Lights out, nights out
  • Spa and fitness center
  • Guest entertainment
  • Live Orchestra

8. Navigator Of The Seas

Navigator of the seas

  • Launched: 2002

Navigator of the Seas is an Amplified Voyager-class ship with tons of things to do onboard, from enjoying dinner to sipping sunset drinks with views. Most amazingly, Navigator of the Seas boasts plenty of quiet cabins as they are designed very smartly. A large percentage of cabins are far away from the busiest public and entertainment areas, allowing for quiet nights. Navigator of the Seas underwent a refurbishment in 2019, upgrading the pool area, adding new nightlife and dining spots, and introducing additional waterslides. In short, this ship caters to all tastes and budgets, but the new enhancements, like Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade, do extra charge.

  • Amplified pool deck
  • The Blaster
  • Ice skating shows
  • Ballroom Fever
  • Suite Lounge

9. Brilliance Of The Seas

Brilliance of the seas

  • Guest capacity: 2,543

Brilliance of the Seas is the second Radiance-class ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet. The ship’s medium size, along with the ample activities and attentive service, makes it famous among the cruisers. With the Radiance series, cruisers never miss a view: the ship’s stunning, nice-story central atrium is surrounded by glass for amazing views. Most amazingly, the plethora of outdoor features at this ship, like the rock climbing wall, are easy to find, and no reservations are required. Although ship venues are generally not congested, some passengers complained about the smoky air quality throughout the ship despite smoking restrictions.

  • English Pub
  • Guest Entertainment
  • Fitness and Spa

10. Adventure Of The Seas

Adventure of the seas

  • Launched: 2001
  • Guest capacity: 3,807

Adventure of the Seas debuted in 2001 as the third in the series of Royal Caribbean’s game-changing Voyager-class vessels. While Adventure of the Seas is not as large or equipped with as many amenities as the Quantum-class, Oasis-class, or Freedom-class ships, it still ranks among the world’s larger vessels.

It offers a variety of venues that set it apart from the traditional cruise experiences, which include an ice-skating rink, a rock-climbing wall, a shopping mall, bars, and cafes.   The Adventure of the Seas deck plan is similar to its sister ships, with a number of rooms that provide a quiet environment while few rooms share the deck with public spaces. Its ambiance is really good, but the only thing that’s not good is that it has a relatively small portion of rooms with balconies.

  • 9 dining options.
  • Three pools and 6 whirlpools.
  • Rock Climbing Wall.
  • Sports Court.
  • Ice-skating rink.
  • Typhoon & Cyclone water slides.
  • Perfect Storm water slide.

11. Radiance Of The Seas

Radiance of the seas

  • Guest capacity: 2,466

Radiance of the Seas was a different kind of ship for Royal Caribbean as Voyager-class ships were very popular; Royal Caribbean thought there was still a demand for “Mid-sized” ships. So they introduce Radiance of the Seas. In Australia, Radiance of the Seas is known as Royal Caribbean’s “Dining Ship” as it has such a large number of free and paid dining options. Although this ship doesn’t have as many bells and whistles as larger ships in the fleet, instead, it is more focused on adults who want some fun and a relaxed dining environment.

  • 1 dining options
  • 3 pools and 3 whirlpools
  • Mini-golf course

12. Explorer Of The Seas

Explorer of the seas

This ship follows the floating resort concept, with a diverse range of entertainment, facilities, and activities that will appeal to the taste of every age group.

Its most famous and exciting attractions include the retrofitted Perfect Storm duo of water slides (Cyclone and Typhoon), each with stories of twists and turns.

Despite the numerous onboard activities, the ship has been surpassed in size and features by Royal Caribbean’s Freedom-class and Oasis-class ships. But it still has many appealing features.

However, the high passenger capacity means queuing is inevitable.

  • Concert venue
  • Spa/solarium complex
  • A shopping mall
  • Dining/Entertainment options
  • 3D movie theater
  • Nine-hole miniature golf
  • New Flow Rider surf simulator

The Oldest Royal Caribbean Ships

Now, in this section of the guide, I’ll discuss the ships launched in the 1990s. These are the oldest and smallest ships in the Royal Caribbean family that have fewer facilities as compared to the newer ships.

1. Voyager Of The Seas

voyager of the seas

  • Launched: 1999
  • Guest capacity: 4,269

Voyager of the Seas is the first Voyager class ship of Royal Caribbean which gave the cruise line the largest cruise ship in the world.

At that time, it was an honor for this ship to have dozens of exciting things to enjoy onboard. Furthermore, it underwent a $97-million refurbishment in 2019, and many enhanced amenities were included 20 years after her debut.

Voyager of the Seas is ideally suited for families with superb children’s facilities catering to youngsters.

  • 11 dining options
  • 3 pools and 6 whirlpools
  • Flow Rider surf simulator

2. Vision Of The Seas

  • Launched: 1998
  • Class: Vision
  • Guest capacity: 2,514

Vision of the Seas is the final Vision Class ship, which is why it shares its name with the class itself.

It is famous for its stunning glass exterior; more than 2 acres of glass were used in its construction back when it launched in 1998.

It’s a mid-sized ship holding 2514 passengers at double occupancy.

Vision is not comparable to the newest ships in tech and amenities, but still, it offers all the basics and a few extra amenities for fun and relaxing vacations.

However, some cabins s howing age have fewer options for food and entertainment than larger ships.

  • Entertainment options
  • Spa & Fitness Center
  • Royal Theatre

3. Enhancement Of The Seas

Enhanctment of the seas

  • Launched: 1997
  • Guest capacity: 2,730

Enhancement of the Seas is a Vision-Class cruise ship focused on a quieter cruise experience as compared to the other larger ships in the fleet.

She might not have all the jaw-dropping features of newer Royal Caribbean ships, but its fun, friendly onboard atmosphere makes it an ideal choice among the cruisers.

With a capacity of 2700, passengers can share their contagious excitement about all the daily activities, and it provides the best ambiance and time to know your shipmates.

Most amazingly, its consistent food and few extra-fee venues make mealtime a pleasure onboard.

4. Rhapsody Of The Seas

Rhapsody of the seas

  • Guest capacity: 2,416

There are good-quality kids’ clubs and plenty of space for adults to enjoy their vacations. It also offers plenty of places onboard for those who admire ocean views.

In short, you’ll get personalized service and consistent quality in the main dining room and buffet.

  • 10 dining options
  • 2 pools and 6 whirlpools

5. Grandeur Of The Seas

Grandeur of the seas

  • Launched: 1996
  • Guest capacity: 2,440

Grandeur of the Seas is the oldest and smallest ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet. Due to the maintenance of public areas, it still retains the classic charm of a 20th-century cruise ship.

Obviously, you won’t get any modern amenities or decor as it’s the oldest ship, but the deck plan flows smoothly.

Most amazing, its main dining room goes beyond what I experienced on larger ships in both service and execution of the menu.

In short, this first Royal Caribbean ship is an ideal option to cater to both new and seasoned cruisers taste who are looking for a simplified and lower-cost cruising option on Royal Caribbean.

  • 12 dining options
  • 2 pools, 4 whirlpools
  • Full-service vitality at Sea Spa and state-of-the-art Fi

A Guide To Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships By Age You’ll Really Want

By: Author Tyler Bowman

Posted on Last updated: October 8, 2023

Categories CRUISE LINES & SHIPS , CRUISE PLANNING

Royal Caribbean has been sailing cruise ships for more than 50 years, and it has grown an extensive fleet of dozens of ships. While Royal Caribbean is most often in the news because of whatever happens to be its latest entrance into the cruise market, it still has ships sailing that date back to 1990s. All of these ships have their own special features and personalities.

To help you evaluate which ship might be right for your next cruise, we walk through each of the cruise line’s current vessels by age – from newest to oldest. (Scroll down for a quick review chart.)

Royal Caribbean Fleet Evolves Over Time

In the beginning, Royal Caribbean ships were relatively small and simple, with basic amenities like a swimming pool, a few bars and lounges, and a small casino. However, as the cruise industry grew in popularity and competition increased, Royal Caribbean began to innovate and expand its offerings to attract more passengers.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Royal Caribbean introduced a number of groundbreaking amenities that are now standard on most modern cruise ships. These included features like rock climbing walls, ice skating rinks, and multiple dining options, as well as larger and more luxurious cabins and suites.

In the 2000s and 2010s, Royal Caribbean continued to push the envelope with even more innovative amenities and experiences. These included features like surfing simulators, zip lines, robotic bartenders, and virtual balconies, as well as partnerships with popular brands like DreamWorks Animation (now discontinued) and Starbucks.

Today, Royal Caribbean ships offer an incredible range of amenities and activities for passengers of all ages and interests. From water parks and Broadway-style shows to fine dining and spa treatments, there’s something for everyone onboard. And with new ships like Icon of the Seas and Utopia of the Seas set to debut soon, it’s clear that Royal Caribbean continues to strive to stay at the forefront of the cruise industry and provide passengers with the latest and greatest in onboard experiences.

Does Ship Age Matter?

For some travelers, the main things they focus on when choosing a cruise are the price and the itinerary. But many other factors can shape the contours of your cruise vacation, and for many people, that includes the age of the ship. Why do some travelers care about age?

Families planning a family cruise may be interested in information about the age of individual Royal Caribbean ships for several reasons:

Amenities: Older ships may not have the same amenities and features as newer vessels. Families who are looking for the latest and greatest in onboard entertainment, dining, and activities may prefer to book a newer ship.

Condition: The age of the ship can also affect its overall condition and appearance. Some families may prefer to sail on a newer ship that looks and feels more modern and up-to-date.

Safety: Parents may be concerned about the safety and reliability of older ships, especially if they are traveling with young children. Knowing the age of the ship can help parents make an informed decision about whether they feel comfortable booking a particular vessel.

Technology: Newer ships may have the latest technology and features, such as high-speed internet, interactive touchscreens, and virtual reality experiences. Families who are tech-savvy or who want to stay connected while onboard may prefer to book a newer ship.

Accessibility: Older ships may not be as accessible as newer vessels, especially for passengers with mobility issues or disabilities. Newer ships are often designed with accessibility in mind, with features like wider doorways, wheelchair ramps, and accessible cabins.

Environmental Impact: Newer ships are often designed to be more environmentally friendly than older vessels, with features like advanced wastewater treatment systems, energy-efficient lighting, and reduced emissions. Families who are concerned about the environmental impact of their vacation may prefer to book a newer ship.

A Ship’s Age Strongly Impacts Price

If you are trying to maximize your cruise travel budget , one of the easiest ways to do it is by sailing on an older ship.

No matter how you value age (or don’t), one thing remains true. Sailings on the newest ships tend to be more expensive than on older ships. Here’s an example for a recent search for March 2024 cruises sailing out of Miami.

The search yielded options for three ships: Icon of the Seas , Oasis of the Seas , and Grandeur of the Seas . This is how the cruises line up on price based on the advertised starting prices.

Sailings on the newest ship are priced more than four times those on the fleet’s oldest ship.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ships By Age

We have put together this handy guide to walk you through all of the ships currently in Royal Caribbean’s fleet by age. We have short narrative blurbs for each ship below. But for those in a hurry, we have also compiled the chart below as a cheat sheet.

A simplified chart of Royal Caribbean cruise ships by age.

Utopia of the Seas

Coming 2024

Debuting in the summer of 2024, Utopia will be Royal Caribbean’s newest new ship. Joining its five sisters in the Oasis class, Utopia will be the first LNG-powered ship in that class.

Fans of the Oasis class ships should be delighted by some expected new additions that include new Solarium Suites, a new Poolside Food Truck (complimentary), and a new addition to the large roster of bars and lounges – the Pesky Parrot.

The other noteworthy feature of this new ship will be its itineraries. From the time that it launches, it will be sailing short 3 and 4-night itineraries that include a stop at CocoCay. This will be a great opportunity for new cruisers who are hesitant to commit to a full 7-night sailing. Or, for those schedules can only squeeze vacations into a long weekend.

Disney Cruise Line ships from newest to oldest — a complete list

Gene Sloan

What's the newest Disney Cruise Line ship? It's something you'll want to know if you're in the market for a Disney cruise.

The newest Disney Cruise Line ship is typically also the Disney Cruise Line ship with the most bells and whistles and the most up-to-date cabins, restaurants, bars and attractions. It's what you want if you want the very latest and greatest in a vessel for your Disney cruise vacation.

Right now, the newest Disney cruise ship is the 1-year-old Disney Wish . It just debuted in July 2022. However, Disney Wish won't be the newest Disney Cruise Line ship for long. It'll soon be supplanted as the newest Disney cruise vessel by the currently-under-construction Disney Treasure — a sister ship being built to the same basic design. Disney Treasure is scheduled to begin sailing in 2024.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Two other relatively new Disney cruise ships are Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream. Both began sailing about a decade ago.

In all, Disney operates just five cruise vessels — far fewer than such cruise brands as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line . Founded in 1998, the line has gone long periods without adding a single new vessel, with occasional bursts of expansion, including one taking place right now.

The line has never retired a vessel since its debut in 1998. The oldest Disney cruise ship, Disney Magic, is 25 years old.

In general, Disney's newest ships are bigger and more amenity-packed than its older ships. If you crave the most possible activities in a Disney cruise vacation, you'll want to stick to the line's three most recently built vessels.

Related: The 3 types of Disney Cruise Line ships, explained

Disney's two oldest cruise ships — those built in the 1990s — are about 40% smaller than the line's newest vessels and have fewer venues on board. Still, even these smaller ships offer a lot of attractions as compared to many vessels at competing lines.

Here, every Disney ship currently in operation is ranked from newest to oldest:

1. Disney Wish

cruise ships by age

Maiden voyage: 2022 Size: 144,000 gross tons Passenger capacity : 2,508

2. Disney Fantasy

cruise ships by age

Maiden voyage: 2012 Size: 125,000 gross tons Passenger capacity : 2,500

3. Disney Dream

cruise ships by age

Maiden voyage: 2011 Size: 125,000 gross tons Passenger capacity : 2,500

4. Disney Wonder

cruise ships by age

Maiden voyage: 1999 Size: 85,000 gross tons Passenger capacity : 1,750

5. Disney Magic

cruise ships by age

Maiden voyage: 1998 Size: 83,000 gross tons Passenger capacity : 1,750

What is the newest Disney Cruise Line ship?

The newest Disney Cruise Line ship is Disney Wish. As noted above, it debuted in July 2022. Measuring 144,000 gross tons, it's also the biggest Disney cruise ship and has more amenities than the line's older vessels.

TPG has had staffers on Disney Wish three times over the past year to experience and review the vessel. For more on the ship and its new features, see the following guides and reviews:

What is the oldest Disney Cruise Line ship?

The oldest Disney Cruise Line ship is Disney Magic. Unveiled way back in 1998, it was the very first Disney cruise ship ever built, and its arrival in 1998 marked the beginning of the line.

Disney Magic isn't just the oldest Disney cruise ship but also the smallest Disney cruise ship. Measuring just 83,000 gross tons, it's about 40% smaller than the new Disney Wish. As a result, it has fewer venues than Disney Wish but also a more intimate feel.

Because it offers fewer and smaller attractions than the new Disney Wish and other newer Disney ships, Disney Cruise Line typically uses Disney Magic and its slightly younger sister ship Disney Wonder for its more destination-intensive itineraries — trips where you're going to spend much of your time off the ship and onboard amenities are less important.

Disney Magic, for instance, is the ship that Disney sends to Europe every summer for itineraries that are all about exploring cities such as Barcelona and Rome (reached via the port of Civitavecchia, Italy).

What new Disney Cruise Line ships are coming?

Disney Cruise Line currently has two new cruise ships on order. The first to arrive will be Disney Treasure in 2024. As noted above, it's a sister ship to Disney Wish, and it'll have many of the same features as that vessel.

Another vessel in the same series, known as the Triton class of ships, is on order for delivery in 2025.

The Triton-class vessels are being built at the Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, which also built Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

In addition, Disney Cruise Line recently bought a massive, partly finished cruise ship that was originally ordered for Asia-based Dream Cruises. The unfinished ship became available for purchase after Dream Cruises went out of business.

Disney plans to finish construction on the vessel and operate it out of Singapore starting in 2025. The ship will sail Southeast Asia voyages aimed at the Asia cruise market.

What is the newest Disney Cruise Line ship available for booking?

Disney Wish is the newest Disney Cruise Line ship you can book right now. The line's next new ship, Disney Treasure, is not yet available to book.

What is the newest class of Disney Cruise Line ships?

The Triton class is the newest class of Disney Cruise Line ships. It'll be made up of at least three vessels, the first of which (Disney Wish) has already debuted.

The Triton class is the shiny new thing at Disney Cruise Line. The first of the vessels, Disney Wish, debuted with a whole new array of Disney "wow" on board, from the "Star Wars"-themed Hyperspace Lounge that offers a "window" view of passing starships to Marvel- and "Frozen"-themed restaurants.

First look: Disney Wish's new 'Frozen' dinner show

In addition, cabins on Disney Wish include seven ocean-view rooms located over the bridge, a first for Disney Cruise Line. The rooms have extended living areas with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the bow and out across the ocean. If that isn't enough, there also are four Royal Suites with a "Sleeping Beauty" theme, two of which feature a two-story floor plan.

What's the difference between newer and older Disney cruise ships?

The three newest Disney Cruise Line ships are notably bigger than the two oldest Disney Cruise Line ships. As a result, they have room for more onboard venues and attractions than the older vessels.

On all three of the newer vessels (Disney Wish, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream), you'll find large water coasters careening around the top deck — a level of attraction you won't find on the older Disney ships.

The newer Disney cruise ships also are home to kiddie waterslides, decktop kiddie play areas and several pools apiece. The ships' insides are loaded with huge children's play areas, family entertainment and even adults-only venues.

Related: The ultimate guide to Disney Cruise Line

Disney's two oldest ships are about 40% smaller than its newest ships and have fewer such features. They have a notably more intimate feel, at least in the pantheon of relatively big, mass-market ships. They also hold fewer people. While Disney's newest ships are designed to hold around 4,000 passengers with every berth full, the line's two oldest vessels (known as the Magic class) are only designed to carry about 2,500 passengers with every berth filled.

That makes the two oldest Disney ships a good choice for someone who wants to try a Disney cruise but isn't eager to travel with huge crowds. The oldest ships in the Disney fleet thus appeal to a subset of Disney fans who prefer more intimacy in a cruise vessel and don't mind giving up some onboard amenities to get it. They are also sometimes less expensive to sail on, on a per-day basis.

In addition, because of their size, the oldest ships at Disney are able to operate itineraries to places that aren't as easy for big ships to visit. Not all ports in the world can handle a ship the size of Disney Wish.

Note that all Disney ships are renovated and upgraded on a regular schedule every few years, so even the oldest Disney cruise vessels have newer carpeting, updated furniture, modern decor in cabins and other updates. In many cases, they also have had entire eateries and bars renovated over the years with concepts that first debuted on newer vessels.

Editor's note: Story was edited to clarify this is a fan-led event, the "Getaway Cruise" has no affiliation with the Disney Cruise Line.

Ahoy, Swifties! If you were unable to attend the Eras Tour in Tampa or didn't grab tickets for the new Miami dates , you're in luck .

The “Getaway Cruise” is a fan-led  Taylor Swift-themed event aboard that is set to launch from Florida next September.

The cruise will head for the Bahamas and Disney's private island from Friday, Sept. 5, 2025 to Monday, Sept. 8, 2025. Believe Vacations travel agents Kim Haig and Kira Ashline will be hosting the enchanted event.

You won't have to deal with Ticketmaster this time. According to Believe Vacations officials, guests can book rooms for the "Getaway Cruise” directly on their  website .

What documents do I need to board?

The website says that a passport is the best ID document for travel. If using a passport it cannot expire within six months of sailing.

U.S. Citizens can also cruise with a birth certificate on most sailings from the U.S. All birth certificates must follow Disney Cruise Line’s requirements as outlined on its website .

Where will the Taylor Swift-themed event take place?

Get ready to watch the sun go down on the Disney Wish in the water.

The Disney Wish is Disney Cruise Line's newest ship, first setting sail in summer of 2022. According to the website, some of the experiences on the 15-deck cruise include Marvel-themed dining, immersive water slides, Broadway-style show, character meet-and-greets and an adult-only Hyperspace lounge.

Are there other Taylor Swift-themed cruises this year?

Of course there are! The “ In My Cruise Era … ” is set to launch from Port of Miami in October.

The cruise, on the Royal Caribbean's Allure of the Seas, leaves for the Bahamas the day after Swift's final show of her three-day stop in Miami. According to the website, the cruise fare includes stateroom accommodations, dinner in the main dining room nightly as well as additional buffet and a la carte options around the ship. It also includes entertainment.

The website does note that all 199 staterooms are currently booked and its waitlist is now closed, but officials said that those who previously joined the waitlist should "keep an eye on your email, we will offer spots in our group to members of our waitlist in the order inquiries were received."

A Wedding Puts India’s Gilded Age on Lavish Display

Many Indians cheer the rise of moguls like Mukesh Ambani, whose son’s wedding has become a global spectacle. To them, India’s poverty is predictable, but such opulence is not.

A man and woman in traditional Indian attire stand next to each other in a lavishly decorated room.

By Anupreeta Das

Reporting from New Delhi

The younger son of Mukesh Ambani, India’s richest man, is set to wed his fiancée in Mumbai on Friday, the finale of a monthslong extravaganza that signaled the arrival of the unapologetic Indian billionaire on the global stage — and introduced the world to the country’s Gilded Age.

For much of the year, the festivities surrounding the nuptials of Anant Ambani and Radhika Merchant, the daughter of a fellow business tycoon, have grabbed eyeballs for their lavish displays of wealth. Millions have been spent on diamonds and emeralds the size of credit cards, on haute couture saris, on wedding invitations made of silver and gold.

Billionaire businessmen, Bollywood stars, models and politicians were among the more than 1,200 guests at a pre-wedding bash in March. Bill Gates stopped by. Rihanna performed. In May, the bride and groom-to-be threw a four-day party on a luxury cruise ship in the Mediterranean; Ms. Merchant told Vogue India they couldn’t find a land venue big enough to host all their guests.

Jay Gatsby would have been awed.

The spectacle has served as an invitation to peek inside India’s uppermost echelons, where a few individuals and families have amassed astounding fortunes in recent years. Buoyed by booming growth and a cheerleading government, the number and wealth of Indian billionaires has soared. They are overlords of the Indian economy, running the phone networks that connect millions of people, the hospitals that treat them, the supermarkets where they shop and the high-rises in which many live.

A lot of money, in the hands of the few.

In 2000, India had nine billionaires, according to Oxfam. Now, India has 200 billionaires, who collectively hold around $1 trillion in wealth, according to Forbes — nearly a quarter of the country’s 2023 gross domestic product.

Their dizzying rise is stark in a land where many live below or just around the poverty line, mirroring the extreme inequality of America’s Gilded Age, when robber barons flaunted their jewels amid extreme destitution.

Kavil Ramachandran, a professor of entrepreneurship at the Indian School of Business, said there were more billionaires with fatter wallets because India has sustained a high growth rate for more than two decades. That’s created a deep domestic market for goods and services, and pushed Indian companies to pursue new businesses, pairing opportunity with ambition.

“It’s a consequence of rapid growth and entrepreneurialism,” Mr. Ramachandran said.

In 2002, Radhakishan Damani spotted the opportunity for an Indian supermarket and launched his first store in Powai, a suburb of Mumbai. More than two decades later, his company Avenue Supermarts runs one of the country’s most popular supermarket chains, DMart. Mr. Damani, who has a net worth of $17 billion, is sometimes called India’s “retail king.”

A recent study about wealth and inequality in India subtitled “The Rise of the Billionaire Raj” found that the total wealth of billionaires has steadily increased from under 5 percent of national income in the 1990s to more than a fifth in 2022.

“All of this suggests that at least the very rich seem to be doing very well in recent years,” the authors wrote.

India’s opening set off breakneck growth.

India has come a long way from its socialist origins. Until 1990, the country operated under strict government supervision and protectionist policies. Companies could only run after procuring multiple permits and licenses from the government, leading to the name “License Raj” — a play on the term British Raj, which referred to colonial rule.

Once India opened up its economy after a series of reforms, some domestic companies embraced the logic of free markets while remaining family-run and tightly controlled, diversifying into new businesses.

In the 2000s, India’s software and services boom — for a time, the country was nicknamed the world’s “back office” — created a slew of new billionaires. Azim Premji successfully transformed Wipro from a hydrogenated cooking fat company into an IT giant, becoming one of India’s first tech billionaires. Fellow tech billionaire Nandan Nilekani co-founded Infosys and helped create Aadhar, a unique identification system for Indian citizens that is somewhat similar to a Social Security card.

Gautam Adani, whose conglomerate the Adani Group is India’s biggest ports operator, has ridden the country’s shipping, infrastructure and energy boom to build a net worth of more than $80 billion.

Mr. Adani’s rise has matched that of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, with whom he shares close ties and whose ambitions for India have unleashed a construction frenzy. Everywhere, there are new bridges, highways, tunnels and high-speed rail tracks — and Mr. Adani’s company is at the center of many of them.

The Ambanis are the first family of Indian capitalism.

Mr. Ambani, whose $115 billion fortune also makes him Asia’s richest man, has long sat atop India’s explosive growth in wealth. Reliance Industries, the giant conglomerate founded by his father that is the source of much of his family’s fortune, has sometimes served as a proxy for India’s economic rise .

Its businesses include one of the world’s largest oil refineries, India’s biggest mobile phone network, television and entertainment ventures and a popular chain of grocery stores.

Many Indians see in Mr. Ambani’s staggering rise in stature and wealth a version of the India they want: a country that doesn’t make a play for attention but demands it. Some even feel pride that his son’s wedding has attracted such global attention. To them, India’s poverty is a predictable fact, such opulence is not.

“Based on the level of the Ambanis’ wealth, the wedding is perfect,” said Mani Mohan Parmar, a 64-year-old resident from Mumbai.

“Even the common man here in India spends more than his capacity on a wedding,” Ms. Parmar said. “So it’s nothing too much if we talk about Ambani. He has so much money due to God’s grace, so why shouldn’t he spend it by his choice?”

The Ambani family’s wealth and influence are so unquestioned that even the use of public resources to aid his private festivities can be a source of pride. In March, the pre-wedding function they hosted in Jamnagar, a town in the western state of Gujarat where Reliance’s oil refinery is based, threatened to overwhelm the town’s small domestic airport.

With hundreds of private jets carrying guests hovering in the air, India’s top civil aviation body and its air force stepped in to help Dhananjay Singh, the airport’s director, manage the air traffic.

“Although it was a demanding period with little sleep, the effort was well worth it,” Mr. Singh wrote on his LinkedIn profile.

Some question the showy displays of wealth.

Rashmi Venkatesan, who teaches human rights law and popular culture at the National Law School of India University, found the “consciously explicit public nature” of the Ambani wedding peculiar.

To Ms. Venkatesan, the celebration was about more than the wealthy getting wealthier; she was bothered by what she called the “valorization” of this kind of wealth.

It’s not just the mind-boggling rise of billionaire wealth that is new, but also the way that wealth has created a new kind of royalty in a country well acquainted with maharajahs.

Like yesteryear’s royal families, today’s billionaires are increasingly keeping their wealth within their class — either through dynastic succession or by marriage. Each of Mr. Ambani’s three children are heading up three different lines of the Reliance business.

In 2018, Mr. Ambani’s daughter Isha married Anand Piramal, the son of the billionaire Ajay Piramal, who runs one of India’s pharmaceutical giants. On Friday, his son Anant is marrying Radhika, the 29-year-old daughter of Viren and Shaila Merchant, the multimillionaire founders of a health care company on whose board she sits.

Norwegian Escape

Introducing Norwegian's New Season of Summer 2026 Sailings

Norwegian Announces New Season of Sailings for Summer 2026

We’ve just unveiled our first itineraries for Summer 2026 — a group of sailings based on guest feedback and global travel trends. One major point of growth across the world of travel is the desire to see new destinations while remaining close to home. Our gorgeous fall New England & Canada cruises offer the unique opportunity to do just that. Guests can discover new regions, landscapes, and cities they’ve never seen before, but do so from a close-to-home port.

Cruises to Bermuda are also the perfect way to get a dose of sun and sand without travelling too far. And everyone loves The Caribbean , how can you not? So we’re sending one of our newest ships, Norwegian Prima, on both Eastern & Western Caribbean itineraries that can be enjoyed separately or combined together for an unforgettable tropical vacation. One bucket-list destination that is not close to home but is best explored by cruise ship is Alaska , and no one does Alaska like NCL. The summer and fall are the best time to explore The Last Frontier (think Northern Lights and Midnight Sun), and our 2026 itineraries to The Greatest Outdoors are sure to be our best yet!

Ready to start planning? Explore all 2026 cruises .

Norwegian Jewel in Philadelphia

A Philadelphia Story for Norwegian Jewel

What do the Liberty Bell, Rocky Balboa, cheesesteak sandwiches and Norwegian Jewel have in common? They'll all be in Philadelphia in the spring of 2026. (OK, Rocky is a statue, but you get the idea). Yup, Norwegian Cruise Line is officially the only cruise line home porting in the City of Brotherly Love.

The exquisitely refurbished Jewel will start her journey in April 2026, transporting guests from the streets of Philadelphia to the pink sands of Bermuda . These months are ideal times to visit this beautiful British territory, thanks to the region’s mild, sub-tropical climate and its southerly winds. All sailings spend multiple days in the famous Royal Naval Dockyard , providing plenty of time to explore the island’s exciting attractions, first-rate shopping, world-class golf and maritime history. From a family beach day on beautiful Horseshoe Bay to snorkeling through an underwater world to a moonlight on a catamaran ride, this destination has it all.

On her journey down to the tropics, Jewel will also make stops in America’s picturesque and historic cities. While on board, guests can enjoy Jewel’s delicious dining at restaurants like Cagney’s Steakhouse and Le Bistro , play on the multi-level sports court, sip cocktails at Sugarcane Mojito Bar, take in spectacular entertainment, and live it up at Bliss Ultra Lounge.

These easy getaways make for a perfect and quick tropical vacation. As the latest ship in the Prima Class, Norwegian Aqua will make new waves in 2025, boasting first-of-its-kind amenities like the Aqua Slidecoaster – the world’s first hybrid rollercoaster and waterslide, new restaurants like Sukhothai and Planterie — our first plant-based offering, and the all-new 3-bedroom Haven Duplex Suite.

Find Your Vibe on Island Time

Farther south in the Caribbean, Norwegian Prima — the first in its class — will offer 7-day Western and Eastern Caribbean sailings. Starting in Port Canaveral, travelers can visit the incredible Kennedy Space Center, then sail over turquoise waters through a tropical paradise. All Eastern Caribbean itineraries visit our private island, Great Stirrup Cay — an idyllic paradise filled with white-sand beaches, vibrant marine life, sporting activities with kayaks and Jet Skis, delicious island eateries, and private cabanas. The Western Caribbean routes visit incredible destinations like Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic, St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands. For the tropical vacation of a lifetime, cruisers can combine both itineraries to create a full 14-day “fun in the sun” retreat, all while enjoying Prima’s world-class amenities like a three-story racetrack, a groundbreaking theatre and night club, a myriad of dining options, and so much more.

Not to be outdone, Norwegian Getaway will offer 3,4, and 7-day sailings to the sunny Bahamas. This will be Norwegian’s first fall season of Bahamian sailings on a large ship.

For those seeking an entirely different kind of vacation, our summer 2026 Alaska itineraries will offer all the excitement, beauty, and individuality that make NCL’s cruises to this region so popular. Norwegian Bliss , Norwegian Encore, Norwegian Jade, and Norwegian Joy will be sailing to The Last Frontier, offering a Glacier experience on all cruises as well as almost an entire day in every port. Travel + Leisure Readers' 5 Favorite Small-ship Ocean Cruise Lines of 2023

Readers shared why great things come in small (ship) packages in our annual "World’s Best Awards" survey for 2023.

Paul Brady is the news director at Travel + Leisure and the brand's expert on cruise travel. He has been covering the travel industry for more than 15 years for outlets including Condé Nast Traveler , Skift , and The Huffington Post .

How Voting Works

  • What Readers Loved
  • The Full List

This year, small ships seem to be hitting the mark. These vessels, which Travel + Leisure defines as those with 150 to 299 cabins, offer what many readers consider the perfect blend of choice and comfort, with plenty of onboard dining and activities without the at-times overwhelming selection found on much larger ships. In fact, small ships may be driving a surge of interest in cruising generally, as new and newly refreshed options in this range are drawing both longtime cruisers and those eager to try a new way of traveling.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Nearly 165,000 T+L readers completed the 2023 survey, an increase of nearly 25 percent over pre-pandemic voting levels. A total of more than 685,000 votes were cast across over 8,500 unique properties (hotels, cities, cruise lines, etc.).

For the cruise category, respondents were asked to rate individual ships; the results were combined to generate scores for cruise lines in different categories based on number of cabins. The small-ship ocean cruise line category is only for ships with 150 to 299 cabins. Some cruise lines may appear in multiple categories depending on the makeup of their fleet.

Ships were specifically rated on the criteria below:

  • Cabins/facilities
  • Itineraries/destinations
  • Excursions/activities

For each characteristic, respondents could choose a rating of excellent, above average, average, below average, or poor. The final scores are averages of these responses.

What Readers Loved

In the 2023 voting, readers gave high marks to established brands that have reinvigorated their offerings. Consider No. 2 Windstar Cruises, which recently rebuilt three of its small ships at an investment of $250 million, adding more suites, improved culinary options, and enhanced spa facilities to each. “I'm never going to be able to get on another cruise line,” said one convert, who traveled on Star Legend .

Meanwhile Paul Gauguin Cruises (No. 3) may have slipped a bit from its 2022 ranking but still posted a score of more than 92 points. That’s thanks to its luxurious service — most rooms come with butler service — and, no doubt, its dreamy itineraries that visit remote atolls in South Pacific and the cruise line’s private beach on Bora Bora. “It's the only way to see this part of the world,” one voter shared.

This year’s small-ship leader, though, made its mark with two new vessels that are unlike anything else sailing today. Read on to see how Viking captured this category — and for more details on all the top lines.

Typically thought of as a midsize-ship line, Viking took top honors in this category, too, thanks to its twin ships Viking Polaris and Viking Octantis . The expedition vessels, both of which have 189 cabins, are built for out-there adventures, whether on the waters of the Great Lakes or in the Southern Ocean on the way to Antarctica. “I can't say enough about how wonderful our experience was on the Viking Octantis to Antarctica. The ship is stunning in every way,” one voter said. “The excursions were all well-planned and executed — and the science and educational sessions were excellent,” another added. While shorter trips aboard these ships are possible, Viking can also arrange for a “ longitudinal world cruise .” These multi-month journeys will take intrepid guests from Minnesota to Ushuaia, Argentina — or the other way around — in small-ship comfort, with port excursions and insightful lectures along the way.

Wall Street’s record hot streak just hit a wall

Outside Wall Street's New York Stock Exchange

NEW YORK — Wall Street’s record-breaking rally is running into a wall Wednesday, as worries about potentially worsening trade tensions with China hit stocks of chip companies. That’s dragging indexes to their worst day in months, but conditions may be less discouraging underneath the surface.

The S&P 500 dropped 1.3% a day after it set an all-time high for the 38th time this year. The Nasdaq composite slumped 2.6% and was on track for its worst day since 2022, also weighed by losses for such  market heavyweights  as  Nvidia  and Apple .

But more stocks in the S&P 500 were still rising than falling, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average was adding 234 points, or 0.6%, to its record set a day earlier, as of 3:20 p.m. Eastern time.

The mix offers a continuation of a recent trend that market watchers have called encouraging, one where more stocks are rising rather than just a handful of overpowering elites. The smaller stocks in the Russell 2000 are coming off a big five-day winning streak on hopes that  interest rates are about to get easier  and the  U.S. economy  will avoid a recession, though the index fell 0.8% Thursday to give back some of those gains.

The market’s spotlight was squarely on chip companies, which tumbled after a report from Bloomberg News said President Joe Biden is considering the most severe trade restrictions available if companies like the Netherlands’  ASML  and Japan’s Tokyo Electron continue to ship advanced semiconductor technology to China. The U.S. government has  blocked Chinese access  to advanced chips and the equipment to make them, citing security concerns, and urged its allies to follow suit.

ASML saw its stock trading in the United States drop 12.7% even though it reported sales for the spring that came in at the high end of its forecasted range. Shares of Tokyo Electron, meanwhile, dropped 7.5% in Tokyo to cull its gain for the year to 32.2%.

Another major chip company, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., sank after former President Donald Trump criticized the self-governed island claimed by Beijing, which the U.S. is obligated by treaty to defend if it is attacked.

“Taiwan should pay us for defense,” Trump said according to a transcript of an interview published by Bloomberg. “Taiwan took our chip business from us, I mean, how stupid are we?” he said.

TSMC’s stock trading in the United States dropped 7.3%.

Reverberations reached chip stocks around the world, including big U.S. players that have been some of Wall Street’s biggest stars this year amid a  frenzy around artificial-intelligence technology . Nvidia fell 6.1% after soaring 155.2% this year through the day before.

Advanced Micro Devices fell 8.8%, and Broadcom dropped 7%.

Big Tech stocks’ movements have an outsized effect on indexes like the S&P 500, which give more weight to companies of bigger size. That was a boon in recent years, when a small group of companies known as “the Magnificent Seven” was able to soar almost regardless of what the overall economy and interest rates were doing. That helped mask weakness underneath the surface as the economy struggled through high interest rates meant to  snuff out inflation .

Now, though, some critics call those Magnificent Seven stocks too expensive, and investors are creeping back into unloved areas of the market. The economy has remained remarkably resilient so far, with the job market remaining solid, and investors widely expect the Federal Reserve to begin cutting interest rates in September because  inflation has slowed .

“Markets cannot continue indefinitely higher on the backs of just a handful of stocks,” said JJ Kinahan, CEO of IG North America.

Johnson & Johnson, whose stock had been down for the year so far, jumped 3.7% after topping analysts’ forecasts for profit in the latest quarter. It was one of the largest reasons the Dow Jones Industrial Average was able to rise despite falls for each of the Magnificent Seven stocks: Alphabet , Amazon , Apple, Meta Platforms , Microsoft , Nvidia and Tesla .

U.S. Bancorp , which has also lagged the rest of the market this year, rallied 4.4% after topping analysts’ forecasts for profit and revenue.

On the losing side of Wall Street was  Five Below , a retailer targeting teens and tweens with products priced at $5 or below. It tumbled 24.3% after its CEO, Joel Anderson, stepped down from his job and from the board. It also gave a profit forecast for the second quarter that fell short of analysts’ expectations.

Spirit Airlines lost 11.4% after the discount carrier cut its forecast for revenue in the second quarter. It said it’s making fewer dollars than expected from fees outside of tickets.

In the bond market, the 10-year Treasury yield dipped to 4.15% from 4.16% late Tuesday.

In stock markets abroad, London’s FTSE 100 rose 0.3% after  data showed  the inflation rate remained steady at the Bank of England’s 2% target in June. Indexes were mixed elsewhere across Europe and Asia.
