Product Test: Bontrager XR4 Team Issue TLR Tires

BONTRAGER XR4 TEAM ISSUE TLR TIRES

The missing piece of the puzzle

It is no secret that past tires from Bontrager, Trek Bike’s own accessory brand, are the reason Trek bikes have not scored higher in Mountain Bike Action shootouts. While reading between the lines was easy (just swap the tires and you’ve got a winner), this frustrated the crew in Madison, Wisconsin, so much so that they hired Frank Stacy (the most respected tire development guy in America, and maybe the world), to develop a tire line that would win bike shootouts for Trek. The $65 XR4 Team Issue TLR tire is the result of Frank’s labor.

team issue trek bike

Field test results: The first indication of major changes at Bontrager was that it was easy to mount the tires to our DT Swiss M1900 rims. With past Bontrager tires, the fit was inconsistent; some almost required motorcycle tire irons to mount them. Not these. The XR4 Team Issue TLR tires slipped onto our rims without tools. Two thumbs were all it took, and these were the TLR versions with added material in the bead. The non-TLR tires would be even easier to mount. The tires beaded easily to the rim (we used tubes), and we started out on the low side of the recommended air-pressure range of 30 psi to 50 psi with 32 psi in both tires.

team issue trek bike

The XR4s are intended for aggressive trail riding, but you could have fooled us with the way they pedaled. This is a fast-rolling, quiet tire. The tires damped trail minutiae (small rocks, loose gravel), giving the feeling of a cushioned ride. Although they rolled well, the tires offered plenty of bite under hard efforts and while braking. We couldn’t help but think that if they work this well with tubes, they will only get better without them. The biggest improvement was in cornering. There was a seamless transition from an upright riding position to cranking into a corner. There was no detectable transition from the center knobs to the shoulder knobs, which allowed test riders to trust the tires, get off the brakes and flow through the corners. The tires also proved to be durable and puncture-resistant. We put in plenty of miles on sharp rocks, goat-head thorns and glass-littered trails (shooters) without a problem. This is not only the best trailbike tire from Bontrager so far, it is a great trail- bike tire period. We predict you will see this Bontrager tire on bikes other than Treks. Yes, it is that good. It is a trail- bike tire that offers lots of cornering bite without charging a rolling-resistance tax. There is little doubt that the Treks equipped with the XR4 Team Issue TLRs are going to be finishing higher in future MBA shootouts.

Privacy Overview

  • Most purposes explained in this notice rely on the storage or accessing of information from your device when you use an app or visit a website. For example, a vendor or publisher might need to store a cookie on your device during your first visit on a website, to be able to recognise your device during your next visits (by accessing this cookie each time).
  • A car manufacturer wants to promote its electric vehicles to environmentally conscious users living in the city after office hours. The advertising is presented on a page with related content (such as an article on climate change actions) after 6:30 p.m. to users whose non-precise location suggests that they are in an urban zone.
  • A large producer of watercolour paints wants to carry out an online advertising campaign for its latest watercolour range, diversifying its audience to reach as many amateur and professional artists as possible and avoiding showing the ad next to mismatched content (for instance, articles about how to paint your house). The number of times that the ad has been presented to you is detected and limited, to avoid presenting it too often.
  • If you read several articles about the best bike accessories to buy, this information could be used to create a profile about your interest in bike accessories. Such a profile may be used or improved later on, on the same or a different website or app to present you with advertising for a particular bike accessory brand. If you also look at a configurator for a vehicle on a luxury car manufacturer website, this information could be combined with your interest in bikes to refine your profile and make an assumption that you are interested in luxury cycling gear.
  • An apparel company wishes to promote its new line of high-end baby clothes. It gets in touch with an agency that has a network of clients with high income customers (such as high-end supermarkets) and asks the agency to create profiles of young parents or couples who can be assumed to be wealthy and to have a new child, so that these can later be used to present advertising within partner apps based on those profiles.
  • An online retailer wants to advertise a limited sale on running shoes. It wants to target advertising to users who previously looked at running shoes on its mobile app. Tracking technologies might be used to recognise that you have previously used the mobile app to consult running shoes, in order to present you with the corresponding advertisement on the app.
  • A profile created for personalised advertising in relation to a person having searched for bike accessories on a website can be used to present the relevant advertisement for bike accessories on a mobile app of another organisation.
  • You read several articles on how to build a treehouse on a social media platform. This information might be added to a profile to mark your interest in content related to outdoors as well as do-it-yourself guides (with the objective of allowing the personalisation of content, so that for example you are presented with more blog posts and articles on treehouses and wood cabins in the future).
  • You have viewed three videos on space exploration across different TV apps. An unrelated news platform with which you have had no contact builds a profile based on that viewing behaviour, marking space exploration as a topic of possible interest for other videos.
  • You read articles on vegetarian food on a social media platform and then use the cooking app of an unrelated company. The profile built about you on the social media platform will be used to present you vegetarian recipes on the welcome screen of the cooking app.
  • You have viewed three videos about rowing across different websites. An unrelated video sharing platform will recommend five other videos on rowing that may be of interest to you when you use your TV app, based on a profile built about you when you visited those different websites to watch online videos.
  • You have clicked on an advertisement about a “black Friday” discount by an online shop on the website of a publisher and purchased a product. Your click will be linked to this purchase. Your interaction and that of other users will be measured to know how many clicks on the ad led to a purchase.
  • You are one of very few to have clicked on an advertisement about an “international appreciation day” discount by an online gift shop within the app of a publisher. The publisher wants to have reports to understand how often a specific ad placement within the app, and notably the “international appreciation day” ad, has been viewed or clicked by you and other users, in order to help the publisher and its partners (such as agencies) optimise ad placements.
  • You have read a blog post about hiking on a mobile app of a publisher and followed a link to a recommended and related post. Your interactions will be recorded as showing that the initial hiking post was useful to you and that it was successful in interesting you in the related post. This will be measured to know whether to produce more posts on hiking in the future and where to place them on the home screen of the mobile app.
  • You were presented a video on fashion trends, but you and several other users stopped watching after 30 seconds. This information is then used to evaluate the right length of future videos on fashion trends.
  • The owner of an online bookstore wants commercial reporting showing the proportion of visitors who consulted and left its site without buying, or consulted and bought the last celebrity autobiography of the month, as well as the average age and the male/female distribution of each category. Data relating to your navigation on its site and to your personal characteristics is then used and combined with other such data to produce these statistics.
  • An advertiser wants to better understand the type of audience interacting with its adverts. It calls upon a research institute to compare the characteristics of users who interacted with the ad with typical attributes of users of similar platforms, across different devices. This comparison reveals to the advertiser that its ad audience is mainly accessing the adverts through mobile devices and is likely in the 45-60 age range.
  • A technology platform working with a social media provider notices a growth in mobile app users, and sees based on their profiles that many of them are connecting through mobile connections. It uses a new technology to deliver ads that are formatted for mobile devices and that are low-bandwidth, to improve their performance.
  • An advertiser is looking for a way to display ads on a new type of consumer device. It collects information regarding the way users interact with this new kind of device to determine whether it can build a new mechanism for displaying advertising on this type of device.
  • A travel magazine has published an article on its website about the new online courses proposed by a language school, to improve travelling experiences abroad. The school’s blog posts are inserted directly at the bottom of the page, and selected on the basis of your non-precise location (for instance, blog posts explaining the course curriculum for different languages than the language of the country you are situated in).
  • A sports news mobile app has started a new section of articles covering the most recent football games. Each article includes videos hosted by a separate streaming platform showcasing the highlights of each match. If you fast-forward a video, this information may be used to select a shorter video to play next.
  • An advertising intermediary delivers ads from various advertisers to its network of partnering websites. It notices a large increase in clicks on ads relating to one advertiser, and uses data regarding the source of the clicks to determine that 80% of the clicks come from bots rather than humans.
  • Clicking on a link in an article might normally send you to another page or part of the article. To achieve this, 1°) your browser sends a request to a server linked to the website, 2°) the server answers back (“here is the article you asked for”), using technical information automatically included in the request sent by your device, to properly display the information / images that are part of the article you asked for. Technically, such exchange of information is necessary to deliver the content that appears on your screen.

Bontrager XR2 Team Issue 2.20 tire review – a lightweight tire for pure XC speed

A fast and impressively planted tire designed to chew up hardpack at speed.

Bontrager XR2 Team Issue 2.20 tire

BikePerfect Verdict

Undoubtedly a fast tire but caution should be taken on rougher sections as it lacks comprehensive puncture protection.

Huge spread of options and widths

Easy to fit

Fast-rolling tread pattern

Excellent traction

Minimal puncture protection

Why trust BikePerfect Our cycling experts have decades of testing experience. We'll always share our unbiased opinions on bikes and gear. Find out more about how we test.

As the component arm of Trek, Bontrager is responsible for manufacturing a raft of components and accessories, and the brand’s XR2 Team Issue pictured here are one of the fastest options in the best XC tires segment. Like its main rival, the Vittoria Mezcal , the Bontrager XR2 Team Issue rolls with ease flaunting a tread pattern better suited to dry and loose conditions.

Used by Trek Factory Racing’s Anton Cooper, Vlad Dascalu, Evie Richards and Jolanda Neff, the lightweight-construction lacks the 'Inner Strength' puncture-resistant casings of the XR2 2.3 and 2.6 but still gains some protection from the 120tpi nylon casing. I’ve been using this particular tire in various guises for years now – in a myriad of conditions and stage races – and have yet to be disappointed. It’s an excellent choice for those looking for the fastest route from A to B.

Bontrager XR2 Team Issue 2.20 tire

 Design and specification

The Bontrager XR2 Team Issue might not feature the visual drama of the Mezcals, but the tread pattern is distinctive and functional. As the narrowest option in the XR2 Team Issue range, the 2.2in version pictured here is still generously lugged featuring a low-profile tread-block design and 120tpi casing. The sidewalls and lightweight nylon casing offer some protection, but not the same level as some of the competition. These particular tires are tubeless-ready and easy to fit - especially in partnership with the brand’s Kovee Elite 23 carbon wheels.

Bontrager’s proprietary tread compound has been formulated for maximum adhesion in the corners, with no compromise on straight-line speed and that’s exactly how they feel out on the trail. Grip levels belie the relatively shallow tread pattern, and provide the assurance needed to push hard through corners and off-camber bends.

Bontrager XR2 Team Issue 2.20 tire

 Performance

Weighing 681g per tire, they’re one of the lightest options in the segment and you can feel the low rolling mass when the trail points upwards. The shallow tread pattern, while not brilliant when it comes to dealing with mud and roots, provides great traction in most situations – even up steep, loose climbs. Despite the paucity of comprehensive sidewall reinforcement, I’ve never felt at a disadvantage or reluctant to press on when the trail gets gnarlier, and I’m talking about properly gnarly Africanized trails of the Western Cape in South Africa.

The counterargument is limited traction levels in the wet, across roots or when the trails are extremely washed out and loose. This can cause a lack of communication and trust with the front end forcing you to hold onto your breaks for longer, subsequently ruining trail flow and rhythm – but this is only in extreme cases. If you’re a heavier rider who enjoys more technical trails, it’s probably worth upsizing to the XR2 2.3 and 2.6 or even the XR3.

Bontrager XR2 Team Issue 2.20 tire

Verdict

The Bontrager XR2 Team Issue 2.20 is a versatile tire, equipped to handle the rigors of contemporary cross-country racing. Yes, it lacks comprehensive sidewall protection but this is not a deal breaker as the 120tpi nylon casing is adequate enough to deal with everything the UK (and world) can throw at it. It’s only when venturing out and taking on more rutted, rocky trails that the casing might come under attack. Overall, it’s a fast, lightweight tire designed for relatively groomed cross-country courses. While they don’t cope well in the wet, they are difficult to trump when it comes to performance on dry, hardpack trails.

For the roads less traveled The GR1 Team Issue gravel tire is designed for fast rolling performance and consistent traction on the roads less paved. It has proven success at the most demanding gravel races and features Inner Strength Casing for lightweight puncture protection while maintaining a smooth, supple, fast feel. Plus, you can go tubeless for better performance and even more puncture protection. - A gravel tire that excels in fast and firm conditions - Fast-rolling and predictable cornering with consistent traction - Tubeless Ready (TLR) for easy tubeless setup and puncture protection - Supple and strong Inner Strength casing provides lightweight sidewall protection - Lightweight 120 TPI casing provides great ride feel and tire performance

Tubeless-ready tires

Tubeless Rim/Tire Cross-Section

Going tubeless allows you to run lower tire pressures without the added weight of a tube. Lower tire pressure has many benefits, including greater traction, lower rolling resistance over rough surfaces, and decreased risk of a puncture-related flat. Tubeless-ready rims and tires are parts of a complete system that eliminate the need for tubes by creating an airtight chamber between the rim and tire. Liquid sealant is added to the chamber to fill small punctures and maintain air pressure while you ride. UST (Universal Standard for Tubeless) is a specific type of tubeless system that dictates the shape of the rim and tire bead. UST rims should be paired with UST-specific tires for best results.

Customer Reviews

Very happy with my new M7 and wife's Moscow Plus

We purchased the NCM Moscow 29 E bike from Leon Cycles earlier this month. Communication was via 'Whatsapp' which I initially thought a little odd but worked out well. Once communication established the transaction was completed quickly and easily. We were able to arrange for the team to assemble the bike for us and we picked it up from the warehouse without an issue. We love the bike and are continuing to find new places to discover using it. Competitive price and great service.

I ordered the bike 4 days ago and today it arrived. Now my first impressions: it is easy to assemble, looks great, is cleanly finished and after a first short driving test I have to say, the hammer. It's totally easy to drive. If it stays that way, I can only say thank you Leon Cycle. Now I can cycle again, despite knee problems. Price-performance top

Great bike, this is my second e bike and by far the best. Watching e bikes over the last 10 years I think the Moscow 29er is fantastic. I live in the Dandenongs outside Melbourne with big steep hills and the Moscow takes them all on with great pulling power and gear range. 48v with 16 amps means over 750 watts of power. The bike is big and serious so getting on and off can be tricky but you do get used to it. With the previous bike (36v at 8amps) I was scared of running out of battery on a big hill and having to push the bike home but not with the Moscow. Also if you take the front wheel off you can get it in a hatchback like my Mazda 3 Which is nice. At $2200 it is a great buy.

Purchased two Moscow 27.5. One for my wife, one for me. Fast delivery, well boxed and easy assembly. Absolutely FANTASTIC to ride and use. Great range, and enough power for steep hills and tough terrain. I highly recommend them. Exactly as advertised and brochure. Looked at many options from other suppliers but these are the best value for money. If anyone wants a little extra range and a few more features then a Moscow Plus may suit. 48 Volt is the way to go. Great support and assistance from the team at Leon to make the right purchase decision. Hope other people may enjoy the ride and quality product. Harry G

Snapcycle’s new 2024 R1 Pro All-Terrain e-bike gets first discount to $1,799

Snapcycle is offering its  all new 2024 R1 Pro All-Terrain e-bike for  $1,799 shipped , after using the promo code  SNAP200  at checkout for $200 off. Down from its $1,999 price tag, this is the very first chance to save on this all-new e-bike model. There is also a bundle option that gives you a  free Vintage Leather Bag  along with the $200 off discount for  $1,908 shipped . The new R1 Pro e-bike comes equipped with a 750W brushless geared motor (1,200W peak) alongside a 48V Samsung battery that propels the bike up to a max speed of 28 MPH for up to 60 miles on a single charge. It has five levels of pedal assistance (that is configurable up to 9 levels) that are monitored by a torque sensor – with a throttle available as well for pure electric action (at 20 MPH max), but keep in mind mileage will vary. It also features a headlight with high/low beam functionality, 4-inch fat tires with fenders over both, a rear cargo rack, a 7-speed SHIMANO derailleur, dual-piston hydraulic brakes with meatal-ceramic brake pads, and an integrated color LCD display for real-time performance data. You’ll also get smart controls through the companion app via Bluetooth for performance monitoring and keyless unlocking.

Anker SOLIX C800 Plus Portable Power Station with 100W Solar Panel returns to $698 low

The official Anker Amazon storefront is offering its  SOLIX C800 Plus Portable Power Station with 100W Solar Panel for  $698 shipped ,  after clipping the on-page $250 off coupon . Normally fetching $948, this particular bundle has only seen two previous discounts since its release at the start of March, which dropped costs to the $698 low first, then to $848 a month later. Today’s deal comes in as a 26% markdown off the going rate that beats our previous mention by $150 and lands as a return to the all-time lowest price we have tracked. You can find the  SOLIX C800 Plus on its own at  $599 ,  after clipping the on-page $50 off coupon , or  bundled alongside a 200W solar panel for  $1,048 ,  after clipping the on-page $100 off coupon .

The  SOLIX C800 Plus  sports a compact 768Wh capacity with 1,600W of power output. It can fully recharge in just 58 minutes via a wall outlet, 7.2 hours via your car, or just under three hours when paired with 300W of solar panel input. It features two water-resistant LED camping lights that have three modes to choose from: a candlelight mode that covers up to 10m², a flood light mode that covers up to 20m², and a flashlight mode that covers up to 20m² – all of them lasting up to eight hours.

The lights can be easily recharged by stowing them back inside the top of the power station’s case, and they even come with a versatile retractable pole arm that can be used as a hanger, tripod, or selfie stick when not being used to extend the camping light’s reach. To cover your other devices and appliances, you’ll have five AC ports, two USB-A ports, two USB-C ports, and a car port. You’ll also be able to completely monitor and control its settings through the Anker SOLIX app, including enabling and disabling ports via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi.

You’ll also find the  standard C800 model  on sale as well for  $499 ,  after clipping the on-page $100 off coupon . The only difference here is the lack of the two LED camping lights and their respective pole arm, giving you a $50 difference in price. Aside from this, you’ll receive all the same features as the Plus model, so decisions likely lie on how much lighting you already have for your campsite or for emergency power outages. You’ll also find some bundle options available as well, with the standard model paired along with a  100W  or  200W  solar panel for  $648  or  $998 ,  after clipping the on-page coupons .

AeroGarden Bounty Basic Indoor Garden now $144

Amazon is offering the  AeroGarden Bounty Basic Indoor Garden for  $144 shipped . Down from its newer $180 price tag, with an original $300 MSRP, it spent most of 2023 coasting along pricing plateaus between $155 and $180, only hitting its $128 low during Black Friday sales. Aside from the fall to its new $180 list price, we haven’t seen much in ways of price cuts since the new year began, with the first discounts occurring in late March. Today’s deal comes in as a 20% markdown off the going rate that beats our previous mention by $9 and lands at the third-lowest price we have tracked.

If you’ve ever wanted your own herb garden but don’t have the space outside to cultivate one,  this handy hydroponic device  is a perfect alternative. No soil, no mess – with its 30W LED grow lights, you’ll be able to grow as many as nine plants up to 24 inches tall. It features an automatic lighting timer to better mimic the phases of the sun throughout the day, as well as a vacation mode that tends to your plants’ continued growth while you’re out of town – all accessed via the touchscreen control panel. It also comes with an assortment of herb seed pods (including Genovese Basil, Curly Parsley, Dill, Thyme, Thai Basil, Mint, Chives, and Italian Parsley) that will begin sprouting within days and ready to harvest in a matter of weeks.
