Port Canaveral is a bustling hub for cruise departures to the Eastern and Western Caribbean and Bahamas. Among the cruise lines that operate out of this port is Disney Cruise Line , which offers a range of exciting itineraries departing from Cruise Terminal #8 or #10 in Port Canaveral during 2024 and 2025.

It’s worth noting that Disney’s shorter 3- or 4-night cruises from Port Canaveral typically visit Castaway Cay or Lookout Cay — and possibly Nassau. These itineraries are perfect for a quick getaway with plenty to do onboard and ashore.

On the other hand, most of Disney’s longer cruises departing from Port Canaveral are multi-port itineraries. For instance, the Western Caribbean itinerary usually includes stops in places such as Cozumel, Mexico, George Town, Grand Cayman, and Falmouth, Jamaica. Once at the port of call, passengers can participate in various shore excursions, from snorkeling and beach time to cultural tours and culinary experiences.

Airports for Disney Port Canaveral Cruises

Those who are close enough or prefer to drive can take advantage of the parking options described in the previous section. However, most people will fly into Orlando for their Disney Port Canaveral cruise.

Which Airport Should I Fly Into for a Disney Port Canaveral Cruise?

Orlando International Airport (MCO) is the most convenient airport for Disney cruises from Port Canaveral . The airport is about 45 miles west of Port Canaveral and offers many options for transportation to the port, including shuttle services, car rentals, and Uber/taxi services. Moreover, the airport has a wide range of flight options from around the globe, making it a convenient choice for travelers from all over. Additionally, flying into the airport eliminates the need to pay for parking, which can be expensive for those who drive.

Orlando Sanford International Airport (SFB) airport is about 61 miles away from the port. While certainly not the closest airport, it might be your only option if you’re flying with a smaller/discount air carrier (or are flying in non-stop from a smaller regional airport). It does not offer any official Disney shuttle services to the port.

Melbourne Airport (MLB) is located 29 miles away from Port Canaveral, and it takes approximately 48 minutes to drive between the two. However, MLB is a smaller airport than Orlando International Airport, with fewer flights arriving and fewer services available. In addition, flights to MLB are typically more expensive, making it a less popular option for those flying in for a Disney cruise from Port Canaveral.

What is the Best Way to Get from the Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral?

When it comes to traveling from Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral, the transportation option that’s best for you will largely depend on your preferences and budget. Renting a car is a possibility, but it can be costly.

A rideshare app like Uber or Lyft offers direct transportation to Port Canaveral and is usually the least expensive option for groups of three to five people. Moreover, Uber and Lyft do not require advance reservations. For these reasons, ridesharing is the best option to travel from Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral .

It is also possible to book an independent shuttle service, which is typically less costly for singles and couples than ridesharing and less expensive for groups than Disney shuttle services. Independent shuttle companies offer various vehicle options, ranging from sedans to motor coaches.

If you are willing to pay more, Disney’s official ground transportation (shuttle service) offers a seamless, door-to-door Disney experience. Since it is per person, it may be more expensive than Uber or third-party shuttles, but if you want a hassle-free Disney experience, Disney ground transportation is your best option .

In summary, Uber is the best way to get to Port Canaveral for budget-conscious travelers, especially families. Or, you can get an all-inclusive, hassle-free Disney experience by booking DCL’s official ground transportation with your Disney cruise package. The Vacationeer can assist you with this.

  • Taxis are estimated to cost $121.99 from MCO to Port Canaveral.

Note : These estimates will be higher if you tip your Uber or taxi driver.

How Much Are Shuttles from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral Hotels?

The price of shuttles from Orlando Airport to Port Canaveral hotels varies depending on the type of shuttle service you select. While shared shuttles can be a budget-friendly option, they may not be cost-effective for larger groups due to their per-person pricing structure. Dedicated vehicles like Uber, Lyft, or taxis may offer a more economical alternative for families or groups.

That said, here are some shuttle options to consider.

Official Disney Shuttles

Disney Cruise Line offers guests a convenient mode of transportation from Orlando International Airport to Port Canaveral through their ground transfer services. These transfers can be easily purchased when booking the cruise and provide a stress-free journey once you arrive at the airport.

Disney Cruise Line Terminal at Port Canaveral with the Disney Wish in the back

Port Canaveral is situated in Cape Canaveral, Florida, serving as Disney's home port. It stands as one of the largest cruise terminals in the US and ranks as the third busiest cruise port globally. During the first half of 2024, the Port Canaveral Cruise Terminal will host two Disney Cruise Ships: the Disney Fantasy and the newly unveiled Disney Wish. Look for your Disney ship at Terminal Building 8.

Port Address

Address: 9155 Charles M. Rowland Dr. Port Canaveral, FL 32920

Approximate driving times (without traffic and with tolls) to Port Canaveral:

- 45 minutes from orlando international airport,    - 50 minutes from melbourne international airport,    - 60 minutes from walt disney world resort, parking operated by the port canaveral port authority is available adjacent to the cruise terminal. all parking facilities are convenient, secure, and patrolled 24 hours a day. the parking garage opens at 10:15 am., parking is $17.00 per day plus tax for vehicles & rvs, including day of arrival and day of departure. for instance, if you have a 3-night sailing, you will be charged $68 (17 *4) plus tax for parking. rates are subject to change without notice. no cash is accepted - you pay using a major credit card company (i.e., american express, visa, mastercard, and discover)..

When you park, the two most convenient floors are level 1, as this is the ground level, and level 3, which is connected to the covered walkway for the terminal. Level 3 is a great place to park as you do not have to worry about the cars driving up to drop off their luggage and can get a great picture of you and your Disney cruise ship in the background along the covered walkway.

There are other parking options around port canaveral, but they are not tied to the port canaveral port authority and typically require you to take a shuttle to reach the cruise terminal. as such, for easy access to the disney cruise line terminal, parking at the nearby garage is your best bet .

Passenger / Luggage Drop-Off & Pick-Up

Inside the Disney Cruise Line Terminal with a model display of a Disney cruise ship

Upon arrival, before you park your vehicle in the terminal parking garage, you will proceed directly to the Cruise Terminal to drop off passengers and luggage. Porters will assist you with your luggage, and parking personnel will direct drivers to the appropriate parking facility. Tipping porters $1 - $2 per bag is customary.

Upon departure, passengers can retrieve their vehicles and pick up their companions and luggage in front of the terminal entrance, or they can walk with their luggage to their vehicle and depart when ready..

What is a Port Arrival Time?

When completing your online check-in process, you will select your Port Arrival Time (PAT). Your PAT is when you can enter the Disney Cruise Line terminal for your physical check-in. For example, if your PAT is from 12:45 pm to 1:00 pm, you can enter the terminal at that specified time. If you arrive earlier than your PAT, you will wait until your time comes. If you arrive after your PAT, you will board with the current group. However, you can park in the garage and drop off your luggage before your PAT to be prepared and among the first in line for your boarding group.

There are various other hotel options in and around Port Canaveral and Orlando Airport. However, my favorite hotel stay for a Disney Cruise out of Port Canaveral is at a Disney hotel! While staying at a Disney resort means you will be a bit farther from Port Canaveral, the magic will begin sooner and/or end later if you stay before and/or after your cruise. Disney offers various hotel types, from value and moderate to deluxe and deluxe villas, allowing you to choose the best option for your budget!

Does Disney offer transportation from the Disney Resorts to the DCL Terminal in Port Canaveral?

As you enter the terminal, you’ll travel from land to sea and “dive” into the world of Disney and Pixar’s film, “Finding Nemo.” There, you’ll find some of your favorite friends from the movie on colorful murals, including fish, rays and beautiful coral. Plus, you’ll “swim” by Nemo’s school friends, including Tad, Sheldon and Pearl, and as you inch closer to embarkation, you’ll be welcomed by Nemo, Marlin and Dory. Guide to the New Disney Cruise Line Fort Lauderdale Port

Posted on Published: 03/26/2024

If you want to take a Caribbean or Bahamian cruise, Florida is one of the best states to cruise from. There are several different cruise ports throughout the state, with many options for cruise ships and cruise lines.

Port Everglades, located in Fort Lauderdale Florida, is one of these popular cruise ports. The Fort Lauderdale cruise port is home to a new Disney Cruise Line terminal. This port can be the perfect starting point for your cruise family vacation.

This post contains affiliate links and we may receive a commission from one of these links. We paid full price for our cruise but have been on media cruises in the past at no or lower cost. All opinions are my own.

Why Cruise from Fort Lauderdale, Florida?

If you are flying in for your family cruise, you may wonder which cruise port to leave from. In general, I recommend looking at the specific cruise first, then the cruise port second (especially for the Florida cruise ports, since there are several options).

However, Fort Lauderdale is an excellent option to consider. It’s easy to fly to, with flight options through either Fort Lauderdale Airport or the Miami International Airport.

While the Fort Lauderdale airport is generally easier, you may find more options through Miami. Both are short drives from the airport, unlike Port Canaveral which is a longer distance from the Orlando Airport.

Regardless of which airport you fly through, I’d recommend staying overnight at least the night before. Flight delays are always a risk, and if you fly in a day earlier, you’ll have some extra time.

As someone who lives in the Northeast, I also enjoy flying in a day or two earlier so that I can enjoy the Florida weather before my cruise vacation from Fort Lauderdale.

While the Fort Lauderdale cruise port (Port Everglades) is not new, Disney Cruise Line has just opened a brand-new cruise terminal. I had the opportunity to sail out of this terminal for my recent cruise on the Disney Dream . In addition to Port Canaveral, this is one of the more popular Disney Cruise departure ports.

Disney Cruise Line Fort Lauderdale Port

Arriving at the fort lauderdale disney cruise line port.

Whether you are coming from the airport or hotel, or driving, it’s easy to access the Disney Cruise Line Fort Lauderdale port. You will need to show ID to get through port security, but you’ll be able to take a cab or ride share if you aren’t driving.

It’s a large port, so it’s important to know that the Disney Cruise Line terminal at Port Everglades is Terminal 4. There are likely to be quite a few ships in port.

Parking is available in a port parking garage, which opens up at 10:45 AM. If you have a lot of luggage, you can pull up to the port first to drop off luggage with porters, before being directed to the parking garage.

Arriving via ride share or being dropped off? They’ll be able to pull up along Terminal 4 to drop you off at the terminal.

Once you arrive, you can leave any luggage with the porters to be delivered to your stateroom later in the afternoon/early evening. You’ll need to carry anything you don’t check, and keep in mind that your stateroom may not be ready when you arrive on the ship.

Disney Cruise Line mails your luggage tags in advance to your home, so be sure to have them on your bag. If you happen to forget them, the porters can write you out a tag.

These porters are not employed by Disney and do accept tips. Make sure to have some cash available to tip. Make sure no essentials (especially your Passport and other documents, as well as medication) are in your day bag and not in this checked luggage.

Checking In For Your Cruise

Once you check your luggage in with a porter (if you choose to), you’ll be directed to go into the terminal. We saw overhead fans in this outdoor queue area, meaning some people may need to wait outside. But we walked right into the terminal.

We checked in with a terminal employee, although most of our actual check-in was completed online. There are separate lines for Castaway Club members and first-time cruisers. If you have a DisneyBand+ (which is completely optional), they can assist in activating it.

Once we completed our check-in, we went through security. This is very similar to an airline security process, but you won’t need to remove your shoes or any liquids in your bag. You also don’t have to follow the TSA liquids rule .

When you check in online, you’ll receive a confirmation with a QR code. You’ll need this QR code until you get your Key to the World key on your stateroom door, so be sure to keep it handy.

There’s plenty of seating, restrooms, and vending machines in this main terminal. Our boarding group had already been called at this point, so we walked right up to enter the ship. Before walking through the Mickey Ear entrance, you can choose to take a group photo.

Like other cruise ports, staterooms are generally not ready until about 1:30-2 pm. Most people go right to lunch in Cabanas and then go to their rooms. Luggage is delivered throughout the afternoon into early evening.

Disembarking Through the Disney Cruise Line Port Everglades Flight

If you choose to have Disney Cruise Line handle your bags, you’ll need to put them out the night before. Make sure you haven’t packed anything you’ll need in the morning (like your toothbrush or clothing), in this bag.

You can choose to do a walk-off if you don’t check your bags. In that case, you’ll be one of the first off the ship.

Otherwise, you’ll need to remember the character that was on the bag tag of your checked bags. When that bag tag is called, you can disembark the ship. You’ll find your luggage on or near a table labeled with that character.

Once you have all of your luggage, you can go through customs with your passport. Then, you’ll be directed out of the terminal based on where you are going and what type of transportation you are taking there. Our disembarkation (we did a walk-off) was very quick and easy for this latest cruise.

Staying Overnight Before Your Flight

We highly recommend staying at a nearby hotel the night before your cruise, if you need to fly in. With flight delays and lost luggage always a risk, it’s a good idea to have some extra time.

This map (with affiliate links) will show some nearby lodging options. There are some wonderful hotels right on the beach, or you can choose a more reasonably priced chain with fewer amenities. While some hotels offer paid shuttle service to the airport, a ride share may be less expensive.

Disney Cruise Line Unveils All New Year Round Homeport Terminal at Port Everglades

Today, Disney Cruise Line, along with port and community leaders, celebrated the opening of the cruise line’s new dedicated cruise terminal and Disney Cruise Line’s second year-round homeport in Florida.

Disney Cruise Line, Port Everglades

“The grand opening of our new dedicated terminal is an incredible milestone as we embark on the largest expansion in our cruise line’s history,” said Sharon Siskie, senior vice president and general manager of Disney Cruise Line. “Now our guests will have even more options to experience the magic of a Disney vacation at sea and can begin creating lifelong memories with their loved ones from the moment they arrive.”

Port Everglades’ ideal location in South Florida offers guests the opportunity to experience beautiful beaches, world-class entertainment, shopping, and dining, as well as family and cultural activities, before or after their cruise. It is also conveniently located near major airports and highways, allowing guests to easily travel to and from the port.

Disney Cruise Line, Port Everglades — Terminal Interior

Once guests arrive to the terminal to embark on their voyage, they will “dive” into the world of Disney and Pixar’s film, “Finding Nemo,” with some of their favorite friends from the film displayed on colorful murals. The more than 104,000-square foot terminal was reimagined by Walt Disney Imagineering exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests to provide a seamless embarkation experience.

Disney Cruise Line, Port Everglades — Embarkation

Port leaders attended the dedication ceremony, including Port Everglades CEO and port director, Jonathan Daniels. He stated that, “Disney Cruise Line is adding a new dimension to the Port Everglades experience. Our staff is looking forward to this new journey with Disney Cruise Line and further diversifying our cruise portfolio to reach a broader audience.”

Broward County Mayor Lamar P. Fisher also attended the grand opening celebration, along with federal, state, and local leaders, and said, “Dream vacations start here in Broward County. The addition of Disney Cruise Line in our community provides travelers with more vacation options at Port Everglades, while boosting our local economy and creating more than 1,100 direct local jobs.”

Disney Cruise Line is committed to creating a lasting, positive impact in port communities. In recognition of Disney’s arrival to Port Everglades, the cruise line announced new community investments in Junior Achievement South Florida and Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County. The donations will support a variety of initiatives, including programs that inspire career exploration, innovation, and storytelling.

“Being a good steward in the port communities where Disney Cruise Line operates is so important to us. We’re proud to continue to invest in local youth programs that help empower and inspire the next generation of dreamers in Broward County,” Siskie said. Collaboration with these organizations will also provide Disney Cruise Line cast and crew, both on land and at sea, with the opportunity to volunteer as mentors and engage with local students through various educational programs.

“Community partners, like Disney Cruise Line, play a pivotal role in empowering the youth of today, shaping their futures for tomorrow. This support is not just a financial contribution, it’s an investment in the next generation,” said Laurie Sallarulo, president & CEO of Junior Achievement of South Florida (JA).

Disney Cruise Line’s donation to Junior Achievement of South Florida will support the JA Career Bound and JA Pre-Apprenticeship programs, including a special marine service technician track that educates students about the maritime industry, marine basics and engine fundamentals.

Chris Gentile, Co-CEO of Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County, added, “The impact of Disney Cruise Line’s commitment reaches the very heart of our mission, which is to empower and uplift the youth of Boys & Girls Clubs of Broward County.” Disney Cruise Line’s donation will help strengthen and support several of the organization’s initiatives, such as the Youth of the Year program.

Disney Cruise Line, Port Everglades — Terminal Exterior

The Disney Dream will begin sailing from Port Everglades on November 20, 2023 with a 5-Night Western Caribbean Cruise , followed by the Disney Magic on May 9, 2024 with a 4-Night Bahamian Cruise , offering guests the opportunity to sail on a mix of three-, four- and five-night cruises to tropical destinations in The Bahamas and the Caribbean.

As part of Disney Cruise Line’s expansion, Disney Cruise Line and Broward County previously announced a 15-year agreement that includes a minimum 10.6 million passenger movements, and three 5-year extension options that could add another 11.25 million passenger movements. The agreement provides for one ship to homeport in Port Everglades year-round beginning this fall 2023, joined by a second, seasonal ship in 2025.

Totally amazing all they did was shuffle the chairs around and hang new decorations from Ceiling the walls. Paint some pictures on the walls. Really it same as when we boarded the Caribbean Princess though terminal 4. Name on the outside. The new garage was finished 3 years ago so the cruise passengers did not fill up the Convention Center Parking Garage. This is called smoke and mirrors.

That is what a renovation is. Why tear down a suitable structure for new construction? Just spruce it up and make it your own. But, imagine that. Disney does something and the “Disney fans” hate it.

I’m not sure why Arthur reads and interacts with this blog – almost all of his comments are negative against DCL. Seems like he needs a hug.

The outside looks so old fashion. The inside isn’t much better. Looks like they did it on a very low budget.

Guests will “swim” by Nemo’s school friends, including Tad, Sheldon and Pearl, and as they inch closer to embarkation, they’ll be welcomed by Nemo, Marlin and Dory.

The more than 104,000-square foot terminal was reimagined by Walt Disney Imagineering exclusively for Disney Cruise Line guests to provide a seamless embarkation experience.

There are plenty of seats in the terminal but chances they will not be needed.

Guests need to select a port arrival time to avoid having to sit and wait for their boarding number to be called.

Early entry to the terminal is not permitted in most cases.

This is also true for Royal Caribbean .

Disney Cruises From Port Everglades – FAQs You Need Answers To!

disney cruise port in florida

In November 2023, Disney Cruise Line will begin sailing out of Port Everglades in Southern Florida for the first time. We already know that the Disney Dream will start things off with the enchanting Very Merrytime cruises in November and December, followed by Marvel Day at Sea in early 2024.

Planning for the brand new (to DCL ) port is well underway on the Disney Cruise Line forum on our discussion boards, and there is some great information being shared that we thought you should be aware of if a cruise out of Port Everglades might be in your future.

In addition to suggestions of rideshare and/or public transportation, we thought we’d remind you of the Brightline train service that began last week from Orlando International Airport (MCO) to various locations in southern Florida, including Ft. Lauderdale and Miami.

Fort Lauderdale’s airport and Port Everglades are adjacent to each other, unlike MCO and Port Canaveral. Depending on traffic and route, it is about 14 minutes from the airport terminal to the Disney terminal in the port. @SteveMouse | DISboards
Dania pointe is a great place to stay if you come in the day before it’s connected to a nice outdoor shopping/entertainment complex. There are 3 or 4 hotel in the complex too. A nice brand new Marriott, Hyatt place and I can’t remember the others. There’s a bunch of restaurants, bowling, movie theater, grocery store, clothing etc if you forget something. It’s close to both the airport and port and out of the traffic of 17th street port area and would only be a 10-15 minute ride from the port and airport too. If you want a beach experience Marriott Harbor Beach is a nice hotel close to the port and on the beach. It’s a very popular hotel and has lots of events there and can be overrun by teens during homecoming and prom season. @princesscinderella | DISboards

Disney Cruise Line reveals 2024 plans for Port Canaveral, new private island

Disney Cruise Line has announced its sailing plans from Port Canaveral and elsewhere for most of 2024 and the debut of its new private island in the Bahamas. Here are five things to know:

What's up with this new island destination?

Disney will begin sailing in June 2024 to its new private island of Eleuthera at Lighthouse Point in the Bahamas, with sailings on the Disney Fantasy from Port Canaveral and on the Disney Magic from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. Most of the summer 2024 sailings to the new island will be from Port Everglades, with two from Port Canaveral ― on June 8 and on July 25.

Lighthouse Point is Disney's second private island destination in the Bahamas, joining Castaway Cay, which Disney has used as a port of call since 1998. Castaway Cay will remain as a Disney port of call for cruises from Port Canaveral and many from Port Everglades.

What does Disney say about its new Lighthouse Point private island?

Disney says it collaborated with local artists and advisers to create the destination.

The island has family and adults-only beaches, a Bahamian art and culture pavilion, nature and cultural tours, a family water play area, recreational activities, a themed kids' club and family cabanas.

Disney said at least 90 percent of the destination’s electricity needs will be met by an onsite solar array, the pier was designed to avoid the need for dredging, and elevated walkways will help limit impact on the landscape.

Kevin Thomas, creative director of Walt Disney Imagineering, said. “We’re focused on low-density, sustainable development that protects and preserves the environment, allowing the site’s biodiversity to shine.”

Marella ship details: 5 things to know about new Port Canaveral cruise ship, including why locals can't sail

What is planned for Port Canaveral in 2024?

Brevard County's seaport, the worlds busiest cruise port, will continue to be the home for two Disney ships ― the Fantasy and the Wish ― in its early-2024 and summer 2024 schedules.

Port Canaveral is No. 1 : Port Canaveral surpasses Miami as world's busiest cruise port

The Disney Wish, which is Disney's newest ship, will feature three- and four-night Bahamian itineraries.

The Disney Fantasy will sail to ports in the eastern and western Caribbean, mostly on seven-night cruises.

Where will the other Disney ships sail from?

Disney Dream: The Disney Dream will sail from Port Everglades, with three- and four-night sailings to the Bahamas and five-night sailings to the western Caribbean in early 2024. It then will sail out of Europe in the summer of 2024, sailing to destinations in the Mediterranean, the Greek Isles, the British Isles, the Norwegian Fjords and Iceland.

Disney Magic: The Disney Magic will sail from Galveston, Texas, and New Orleans during early 2024. It then will sail from Port Everglades in the summer of 2024 to the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Disney Wonder: After returning from its first season in Australia and New Zealand, the Disney Wonder will arrive in San Diego in March 2024 for three- to seven-night voyages to Mexico. In the summer of 2024, the Disney Wonder will sail from Vancouver, British Columbia, on five- seven and nine night sailings to Alaska.

What's ahead for Disney Cruise Line?

A sixth Disney Cruise Line ship, the Disney Treasure, is under construction and is likely to debut sometime in late 2024.

No word yet in its home port. But Disney has debuted the Wish and its other ships at Port Canaveral, which is the closest port to Disney's Orlando-area theme parks, allowing customers to take land-and-sea vacations with Disney.

How Much Does A Disney Cruise Cost? - 2024

I ’ve been on twelve Disney cruises, so I obviously think that the Disney Cruise line is worth the money. But when you are booking your family cruise, you may look at other family-friendly cruise lines as well. Disney Cruise Line cruises can often be more expensive, and without really knowing about the experience, it can be hard to justify the extra expense.

If you are considering taking a Disney cruise for your next family vacation, you’re probably wondering, “How much does a Disney Cruise cost” ? It’s important to understand, whether you are evaluating different cruise options or budgeting for a future trip. You’ll probably also wonder what’s included and whether it’s worth the cost.

The price of a Disney cruise depends on many factors. Here’s an overview of Disney Cruise prices as well as what’s included and what factors influence the price.

Disclosure I’ve been on one complimentary media preview cruise and two cruises as part of Disney Social Media Moms. The remainder of my trips have been at full cost. All opinions are my own.

How Much Is A Disney Cruise? Is It Worth the Cost?

Factors that affect the price of a disney cruise.

When looking at the price of a Disney cruise, many factors affect the price. The time of year of the cruise can often influence the price. Like other travel products like airfare and hotels, demand significantly influences the price.

With a limited supply of staterooms and only four ships (with more on the way), the price is impacted by the current demand for staterooms.

You’ll often find that Disney Cruises that take place during peak times of year (like school vacations) will be more expensive than other weeks. You’ll want to book those early to get the most stateroom options and the best Disney Cruise prices.

If you are thinking of doing a Caribbean cruise, January can be a great option and is often the cheapest month. Typically all four ships (the Disney Magic , Disney Fantasy , Disney Dream , and Disney Wonder ) are sailing in the Caribbean, so there are lots of sailings to choose from, with many Caribbean itineraries.

In addition, because the Caribbean can sometimes be chilly in January, it’s not as busy.  I’ve been on several January cruises, and while sometimes the weather has been a little cool, we’ve also been very lucky with perfect weather.

Of course, most schools are in session for most of January, so it can be more difficult to sail than if your kids are in school. Martin Luther King weekend typically is more expensive than the rest of the month.

As you’d expect, the duration of the cruise also affects the prices. A longer cruise is more expensive than a shorter cruise. I usually recommend that travelers start with a 3 or 4-day cruise to see if it’s something they enjoy before committing to a longer cruise.

Some families like to do a Disney Land and Sea vacation where they combine their cruise with some time at Walt Disney World. That can be a great way to take your first cruise and make sure it’s something your family enjoys.

Unlike hotels, where you’ll pay per room, on the Disney Cruise Line, the cost increases per person in a stateroom. This is because the cost of a Disney cruise includes all of your meals in the regular dining rooms as well as activities.

Of course, the incremental amount of an additional person in the room is lower. When I travel with my friends on the Disney Cruise Line, we like to have two to three people in the room. We don’t usually spend too much time in the room, and it never feels crowded, even though it is a small room.

The type of stateroom you book is also a factor in the cost. We typically book a deluxe family stateroom with a verandah, although you can save money by getting a room without the verandah. Interior rooms are less expensive.

Think about how much time you plan to spend in the room, and whether or not you’ll use the verandah. I love sitting outside sipping coffee in the morning, and I find the verandah is worth the extra cost. But that may not be the case for everyone.

Special cruises, like the Very Merrytime Cruises and the Marvel Day at Sea, may also cost a bit more than a standard cruise. Often discounts (like the discount for booking onboard) aren’t available on these cruises.

Getting a Disney Cruise Line Discount

The best way for a return guest to get a discount on the Disney Cruise Line is to book while you are already on a sailing. You’ll have two options.

You can book the dates that you want to sail and can choose your exact dates and room. For this, you’ll need to make a deposit.

Alternatively, you can book a placeholder for a $250 fee. This can be applied to a cruise booked within the next two years. I typically book a placeholder, even if I don’t have another cruise planned because it’s valid for a while.

Depending on the sailing, you’ll get a discount as well as stateroom credit. To make an onboard booking, you’ll want to visit the desk on the ship as soon as possible. It can be very busy by the end of your sailing and there is typically a line to talk to a cast member.

Other discounts can sometimes be available for Canadian residents, Florida residents, and members of the military. The Disney Cruise Line special offers page has more specific information on this. They aren’t always available so you’ll have to check for details and eligible sailings.

What’s Included in a Disney Cruise?

When assessing the cost of a Disney cruise, you’ll also want to know what’s included and what isn’t included in the price of the cruise. It’s important to calculate the total cost that you’ll expect to spend.

Things included in your Disney Cruise cost include Disney character interactions, shows on the Disney cruise ships, the kids’ clubs, meals in the main dining rooms, unlimited ice cream, many snacks, most room service, soda, standard coffee, and iced tea.

While many cruise lines do include these items (soda is typically not included with most cruise brands, however), it’s important to look at how your family will use these inclusions.

My kids love the kids’ clubs and the shows, so we usually do that daily. It’s completely worth it for us. On the other hand, we don’t drink soda, so we don’t care if it’s included.

What’s Not Included in a Disney Cruise

As you do your price comparisons and start to budget for your trip, you’ll also need to know what’s not included in a Disney Cruise.

Once you arrive at the airport, you’ll need to get to the port. Depending on the port you are leaving from (for instance, Port Canaveral ), Disney transportation may be offered. However, this is an extra cost and isn’t included in your cruise.

If you are leaving from Port Canaveral, Florida, you may want to start (or end with) a Walt Disney World vacation as part of a Disney land and sea adventure. In that case, transportation is offered from the parks to the port, but again, that is an extra fee that you’ll need to include in your budget.

Where available, I find it convenient to take Disney transportation because they will tell you exactly where you need to go. It’s worth the extra peace of mind for me to pay for it rather than worry about transportation on my own. But, rental cars, ride-sharing, and private transportation are also an option. Compare rental car prices here .

Shore excursions are another cost that is separate from the standard cruise cost. These are something that you’ll want to research before committing to your cruise because they can be expensive.

This is especially the case in Europe and Alaska, where you may pay around $700+ per person for a single excursion. That can add up, especially for longer cruises when you’ll want to take multiple excursions!

Sometimes you’ll find that excursions booked outside the cruise line might be a little less expensive. Just keep in mind that there is a risk associated with this. These excursions and companies may not be vetted by the cruise line.

You will also be responsible for making sure you get back on board with plenty of time. If for some reason, the cruise doesn’t dock at a specific port, you probably won’t get a refund. This can sometimes happen because of weather or other unpredictable reasons.

Alcohol is not included on the Disney Cruise Line. You can purchase beer and wine packages that do help bring the cost down. If you typically get a couple of drinks per day, it’s a good idea to keep looking at your bill on the Disney Cruise Line app so you aren’t surprised on the last day.

Some snacks (like popcorn at the theater), premium desserts (at Vanellope’s on the Disney Dream and the Sweet on You Ice Cream shop on the Disney Fantasy), premium coffee (at the Cove cafe), and meals at the adult-only  Palo and Remy also cost extra.

Gratuities are also not included in the cost of a Disney cruise. You can usually prepay the gratuities, or they’ll be automatically added to your bill. You can, however, change these by going to guest services.

You’ll also want to tip anytime you pay for something out of pocket and for room service. You can just write these tips on the slip you sign and add them to your bill. They’ll be added to your stateroom account.

Other things cost additional on a cruise, including WiFi and Bingo.

What Does a Disney Cruise Cost?

These prices are accurate from the date we wrote this post and are always subject to change. As mentioned above, many factors affect these prices.

You’ll pay anywhere from about $1,500 to $8,000 for a three-night cruise on the Disney Wish for a stateroom with 4 people. This cruise goes to Nassau and Disney’s Castaway Cay . This is a great option as a first cruise because it’s less expensive than the others and is a short commitment.

You can book a four-night Bahamian cruise out of the Fort Lauderdale cruise port for about $1,900 to $6,700 for four people. This excludes Christmas week when the price is significantly higher.

Alaskan Cruises are about $6,700 to $20,000 for a seven-night cruise. Concierge rooms are higher, however. Although it’s a lot more expensive for a verandah, you’ll probably use it quite a bit in Alaska so it may be worth the splurge. Keep in mind that the excursions and airfare may add quite a bit to this price.

European cruises can vary quite a bit. You can get a 5-night European cruise out of Barcelona starting at about $7,700 , but rates can go up to over $16,000 for a verandah room on a 12-Night Norwegian Fjords and Iceland Cruise. Don’t forget to factor in airfare and shore excursions, which can increase the price of your vacation.

WEATHER ALERT

A rip current statement in effect for Coastal Broward and Coastal Miami Dade Regions

Cruise line worker arrested at port everglades for child sexual abuse material, feds say.

Chris Gothner , Digital Journalist

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – A Celebrity Cruises crew member appeared in Fort Lauderdale federal court Tuesday after federal agents said they found child sexual abuse material on his phone after he disembarked at Port Everglades the day prior.

According to court documents released Wednesday, agents searched the phone of Dennis Ofrancia De Leon, 44, a Filipino national, after he got off the Celebrity Reflection Monday.

Homeland Security Investigations Special Agent Katherine Leonard wrote in a criminal complaint that a “cursory search” of the device revealed “multiple videos/photographs” depicting child sexual abuse material.

Authorities described videos showing boys and girls being raped or otherwise sexually abused by men or women.

Leonard wrote that De Leon admitted to viewing child sexual abuse material, saying he began receiving it about four years ago through Facebook Messenger and looked at it about “once per month.”

He admitted to viewing content showing victims under the age of 10, the complaint states.

De Leon said he “generally deletes the child pornography he downloads onto his cellphone prior to traveling internationally, but failed to do so on this occasion,” Leonard wrote.

He was taken into custody on federal charges of transportation and possession of child pornography and was being held in the Broward Main Jail on behalf of the U.S. Marshals Service as of Wednesday, according to jail records.

Those records state he’s also being held on an immigration hold.

A spokesperson for Celebrity Cruises told Local 10 News that De Leon was fired following his arrest.
