The best places to view and take photos of the Eiffel tower

Friday 18 November 2022

Modified the 20/03/24

Who hasn’t taken a photo of the Eiffel Tower when in Paris, by day or night, from wherever they happen to be in the city? It might have been just a shot of the top or a small section of the structure visible from a window of a Parisian apartment or street corner… There's a good reason why the Eiffel Tower is one of the most “Instagramed” monuments in the world: it is a symbol of Paris and, at over 1,000 feet tall, its unique, slender silhouette is visible from all parts of the city, as well as from many raised spots in the surrounding region.

We've put together a selection of top locations from which to take the best souvenir photos of the Iron Lady.

Near the Tower

In the vicinity of the Tower itself, the Champ-de-Mars and the Trocadéro esplanade are the most obvious places from which to get an incredible view of the Tower, especially in clear weather, at sunrise or sunset. These places are also perfect for relaxing or taking a stroll.

The Eiffel Tower seen from the Trocadéro

If you want the Seine to feature in the foreground, head to Bir-Hakeim Bridge , where you’ll find the France Renaissante statue. Recently renovated, Bir-Hakeim Bridge now shimmers with stunning silver tones. It forms a perfect duo with the Eiffel Tower in the background. If you’re planning to walk along the banks of the Seine (particularly on the right bank), you’ll discover plenty of fabulous viewpoints from the embankments and bridges (from Issy les Moulineaux to the Alexandre III bridge).

See if you can find any undiscovered viewpoints! The 7th, 15th and 16th arrondissements are filled with streets offering interesting views of the Tower. One of the most striking examples is Rue Saint-Dominique , which showcases the Tower’s slim silhouette. The less well-known Avenue de Camoens and Rue Le Tasse in the 16th arrondissement, near the Trocadéro, offer exceptional views of the Tower’s structure, which brilliantly complements the lines of the surrounding buildings. An absolute treat for fans of Parisian urban architecture!

Raised spots

On the Right Bank, the ideal place from which to photograph the Eiffel Tower from a height is undoubtedly the Arc de Triomphe . A visit of this amazing structure is definitely a must and you can take the opportunity to capture the view of the Eiffel Tower from the terrace at the top.

On the Left Bank, to the south of the Tower, our great neighbor the Montparnasse Tower offers one of the most stunning and breathtaking views of the Eiffel Tower from its 656-foot-high panoramic observatory. This viewpoint is very popular with photographers, particularly in the evening when the monument's metal surface gleams in the rays of the setting sun.

Other tall Parisian monuments from which you can take photos include the Saint-Jacques Tower , near Chatelet, and the dome of the Pantheon, in the 5th arrondissement, when it is open to visitors. Their historical and architectural importance make them Parisian must-sees in their own right, but they also offer exceptional views of the city and the Eiffel Tower in particular!

The Eiffel Tower by moonlight

Belvederes with breathtaking vistas of Paris

The Eiffel Tower can be seen from a distance of between 35 and 50 miles from Paris, depending on the weather and air quality. If you have a camera with a good zoom and are looking for a challenge, the Tower is a great subject, even from a considerable distance, as long as you’re shooting from an elevated position. Some of the best high spots from which to capture the Eiffel Tower with the rest of Paris are, of course, the dome of the Sacré Cœur Basilica on Montmartre hill and the belvedere in Belleville Park , in the 20th arrondissement.

Around Paris and outside the capital itself, there may be other exceptional raised locations near you that are worth including on your list of favorite outings. Get ready to go searching for the best viewpoints and make your choice according to the terrain, urban layout and vegetation. To begin with, consider Argenteuil and the Parisis natural region to the north-west of Paris, home to two hills (Orgemont and Châtaigniers) and offering pleasant green spaces and an exceptional panoramic view of the Seine Valley. To the west, go to Mont Valérien (a place of national remembrance) in Suresnes and the Saint-Cloud Park.

Further to the south, a visit to the park and terrace of the Meudon Observatory and its surrounding area is a must. Follow the course of the Seine with your eye and you’ll spot the Eiffel Tower! To the north-east, Jean Moulin Park in Bagnolet-Montreuil offers a magnificent panoramic view of the whole of Paris and the Eiffel Tower which, although far away, remains a proud fixture in the landscape.

Soviet Luxury Car GAZ-13 «Chaika» (1959)

Front corner view of the famous Soviet luxury car GAZ-13 «Chaika», shining with chrome parts under glass roof of GUM building on late August evening. It is a 1959 model. The marvelous «Chaika», which translates as seagull (whose shape can be recognized on the front of the car), was frequently used for military parades, as an official car for Soviet leaders and a number of these cars were ordered by KGB authorities.

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .

5 most interesting stations of the Moscow Metro

Traces of the great victories of the Russian state are gathered in metro that sometimes is compared with a museum. Foreign tourists guided by a personal guide admire mosaics at “Kievskaya” station, rub intensively the nose of the statue of the dog at “Revolution Square” station, it is said, this will give them luck, take pictures of the inlay at “Mayakovskaya” station.

So here, there is a list of five most curious subway stations:

1.Kievskaya (circular line)

It was opened in 1953. This station owes its cheerful and Southern look thanks to the first secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party Nikita Khrushchev. Nikita Khrushchev did not like at all the two other stations “Kievskaya” located nearby. He wanted to add a solemn look to this station in honor of the Soviet republic where he worked before. So the design contest was announced. 73 projects were submitted for the competition and the project won the architect from Ukraine. The station was dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the union between Russia and Ukraine.

Komsomolskaya

It was opened in the 50s. Firstly, it had to bear the name of “The Kalanchevskaya Square” but then it was decided to name it in honor of the young workers who took an active part in metro construction, the youth organization called “Komsomol”.

During the Moscow tour don’t forget your camera. The station has a wonderful  majolica  tile  mosaic which was designed by the academic of pictorical art Lanceray. The young builders of the subway are represented there.

Revolution Square

It was opened in 1938. The station has a complicated but happy life. Different miraculous abilities were attributed to the sculptor who made all the statues here. Moscow students come to this station before exams to touch the dogʼs nose. It is considered this will help to get the highest marks. That’s why the four dogs that are set at the station are polished. And only one gentle touch of the leg of the student, people say, treat from unhappy love.

Novoslobodskaya

The marvelous stained-glass of the station was executed in Litonia. The pieces of glass were prepared for one of the cathedrals. Communist ideologists suspected about the stained-glass decoration if  it would remind a church to workers. But the windows began to recall an aquarium with pictures of the sea kingdom.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
