“This is to share our recent Tokyo tour experience. Our trip was unplanned knowing that visiting Japan will require a visa which most would consider a tedious process. On May 12, they gathered tour joiners for lunch in a restaurant in Makati for a pre departure briefing. It gave us the opportunity for questions and clarifications. Likewise had a chance to meet other joiners and our tour leaders from the agency. This made our entire tour organized and fulfilling.

Our experienced with JAL (for our group) was great. Food, flight stewards and services were above expectations. Shinjuku Washington Hotel made our stay in Japan a real Wow! Buffet breakfast was really good and there are other restaurants to choose from within the hotel as alternative. Room is not that big but adequate enough, room service, staff, cleanliness and amenities made our stay pleasant. Lunch and dinner included in the package in local restaurants were good as well although some joiners were not satisfied on our last dinner which they served ramen. For me, its okay since they could have thought of it for variation of food.

Our Japanese tour guide and tour leaders coordinated themselves well making sure that whats in the itenerary are followed. Though we didn’t get the chance to try their local train as specified in the flyer instead rode a bus to go from one place to another. A large group like ours may be the reason for some changes. Anyway, not a big deal for not able to experience the train ride.

The experience was awesome in general and I definitely recommend this to first time visitors to Japan. The tour cost of 988usd can be considered a little expensive but my take on this is that….its worth it! If I am to rate my overall Japan tour experience in a scale of 1 to 10 and 10 being the highest, I give it a 9.

What training or studies are needed to work in a travel agency?

Before we delve into the different courses that allow you to work in a travel agency, let's start by highlighting the fact that no diploma is required if you want to open your own agency or work in one. In fact, since 2015, it is no longer mandatory to have a BTS in tourism or a similar degree to create your own travel agency. You can therefore practice without a diploma, however skills and experience remain key elements for success. Let's not fool ourselves, creating this type of company, or even just working in it, is not within reach of those who are not passionate about the subject of travel and foreign cultures, and furthermore, it is never too late to train and learn. If you have no diploma to help you, but you want to change your career to become a travel agent for example, know that it will be possible to train yourself via your "Compte Personnel de Formation" (CPF). Inquire with Pôle Emploi to find out where your account stands and how much you have to train yourself. After having said all this, let's now take a look at the courses that are most often favored before entering the world of work in a travel agency. After high school: 2 years to obtain a BTS in tourism or operational commercial management; 3 years for the BUT (Bachelor Universitaire de Technologie) in commercialization techniques. Specialized schools also offer bachelor's degrees. After a two-year degree: - BTS in operational commercial management - BTS in tourism - Salesperson in business travel and tourism After a three-year degree: - BUT in commercialization techniques - Professional license in tourism professions: commercialization of tourism products - Professional license in tourism and leisure professions After a five-year degree: - Master of Science in Tourism and Destination Management

What is the scope of intervention of a professional?

On a daily basis, the activities of a travel agent are diverse and varied, so much so that the professional will rarely have time to get bored during their days, provided their agency is running properly. These tasks can be very different from one company to another. QUEZON CITY, (PIA) -- The construction of Tourist First Aid Facilities across the country will soon add to the flagship tourism infrastructure projects of the Department of Tourism (DOT) which aims to provide a safer and secure tourism experience for tourists. 

Tourism Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco bared this initiative during a stakeholder meeting with South Korean travel and tourism partners in Seoul on Wednesday, May 8. 

“The safety of our tourists is our topmost priority,” said Frasco. 

The said facilities will primarily provide the necessary emergency first aid assistance and other medical attention to travelers in the event that they encounter accidents while on vacation in the country’s various tourism destinations. 

“The Tourist First Aid Facility will be equipped with skilled healthcare professionals who will have access to quick response resources to be able to attend to injuries and emergencies, enhancing the safety and peace of mind of our tourists while they travel,” she explained. 

The DOT, in partnership with the Department of Health (DOH) and the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (TIEZA), is projecting to complete the construction of five (5) Tourist First Aid Facilities this year. 

This tourist safety-centered infrastructure project will be complemented by the construction of  hyperbaric chambers in the country’s key dive destinations including Puerto Galera, Boracay, Cebu, Negros Oriental, and Camiguin. 

These will add to the existing 15 hyperbaric chambers across the country that cater to the safety medical services need of divers. 

“We believe that the safety and well-being of our diving community and our tourists is paramount, that is why we are committed to ensuring that every dive is not only a journey to the spectacular marine wonders of the Philippines, but also a safe one,”  Frasco further noted. 

The DOT’s close collaboration with South Korean tourism stakeholders is rooted in the importance of the foreign market as the Philippines’ top source of international tourist arrivals with a recorded sum of 1,989,322 arrivals in 2019. 

To date, the country has already welcomed 599,200 South Korean tourists which accounts for 26.86 percent share of the total foreign visitor arrivals.

“A cornerstone of our tourism strategy is the strengthening of international relationships through effective co-marketing and joint promotional efforts. Our partnership with Korean travel and trade partners is integral to our promotional strategy, enhancing the Philippines' visibility as a premier destination,” said the tourism chief, noting that the Philippines is expected to welcome 1.8 million to 2 million visitors from South Korea for 2024.

Philippines Closes Schools as Heat Soars to ‘Danger’ Level

Scorching temperatures coincided with a nationwide strike of jeepneys, the main mode of public transport in the country.

The Philippines closed all public schools on Monday and Tuesday because of dangerously high temperatures, moving classes online in a country where schools are typically shut because of tropical storms.

Over the past week, average temperatures in many parts of the country topped 40 degrees Celsius, or more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Extreme heat is forecast this week to blanket almost the entire country, with the heat index in some regions rising to at least 42 degrees Celsius, or “danger” level, according to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration. That designation is the second highest on the agency’s heat index scale. It advised people to avoid exposure to the sun or risk heat stroke, heat exhaustion and cramps.

In metropolitan Manila, where the heat index is forecast to hit 45 degrees Celsius early this week, residents in overcrowded slums have been cooling off by setting up colorful inflatable pools on busy roads. Others in this megacity have been dipping into Manila Bay, flouting rules that prohibit swimming in its polluted waters.

In its advisory on school closures, the Department of Education on Sunday said the extreme weather coincided with a nationwide strike of jeepneys, the colorful, open-air vehicles that are the main mode of public transportation in the Philippines. Jeepney drivers are protesting a government plan to phase out their rides — which trace their origins to U.S. military jeeps — and replace them with modern, more energy-efficient minibuses.

The extreme heat had already forced some schools to cancel classes before the government’s call for closures. The Jesus Good Shepherd School in Imus, a city south of Manila, last week sent students back home because of soaring temperatures, even though the private institution is among the small minority of schools in the country that has an air conditioner in every classroom.

“It is hard for the students and teachers alike to concentrate, because the air-con is struggling, too,” said Ana Marie Macarimbang, a fifth-grade teacher at the school who has taught for nearly two decades. “We are in a tropical country, yes, but the heat now is more intense than I can remember.”

Weather-related school closures in the Philippines have historically been more common during the typhoon season, which peaks between July and October . The current closures, teacher’s groups have contended, could have been avoided had the authorities not changed the school calendar after the pandemic. The school year now runs from August to May, roughly, rather than the former June-to-March schedule.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has said that he has no objections to readjusting the school calendar, and blamed climate change for the extreme heat. The government “really didn’t expect it to be like this,” Mr. Marcos said earlier this month.

Extreme temperatures are also disrupting everyday life in other parts of Asia, including Cambodia and Vietnam . Earlier this month, a heat wave forced schools in Bangladesh and India to close.
