Amazon Rainforest

When it comes to nature and wildlife in Peru, the Amazon Rainforest is the place to be. The lush rainforest covers nearly two-thirds of the country, but is home to only 5 percent of its population. Adventurous travelers can explore this region with a professional guide at a jungle lodge. Cruise remote Amazonian waterways, make friends with local communities, swim with pink river dolphins, and walk under the canopy tree homes for flitting birds, snoozing sloths and swinging monkeys.

For nature lovers, a trip to Peru is not complete without exploring the largest rainforest in the world. Wherever you go, you’ll have a chance to spot wildlife, visit lush jungle lodges and participate in ecotourism. There are different highlights depending which part of the rainforest you visit.

Let’s explore the three most popular destinations in the Peruvian Amazon:

Puerto Maldonado

Why choose here? Puerto Maldonado is at the southern gateway to the Amazon jungle, with Madre de Dios River weaving through it. A visit to this region affords visitors with easy access to Tambopata National Reserve , a wide array of excellent jungle eco-lodges, and glimpses of oxbow lakes, macaws at clay licks, and maybe even a giant river otter. This part of the Amazon has Bolivia just to the east and Cusco to the west.

Why choose here? To the northeast of the country, you’ll find the very remote city of Iquitos deep in the Peruvian jungle and only accessible by flight. This is the easiest place to see the Amazon River in Peru, and it also offers quick access to the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. As Peru’s largest natural protected area, this is a wonderful place to spot monkeys, sloths and majestic pink river dolphins or have rich cultural experiences meeting those who call the reserve home.

Manu National Park

Why choose here? Manu National Park is a treasure in and of itself. Located between Puerto Maldanado and Machu Picchu, this is a wonderful spot for wildlife viewing, bird watching and river exploring on Manu River. Elevations in the park range from 500 to 14,000 ft (150-4,200 m) so you can see different biospheres from the forest floors to the mountain peaks. It’s a very unique place with a rich cultural heritage, where the Andes and the Amazon meet.

Peru Amazon Map

The jungle city of Puerto Maldonado represents a different side of Peru. Temperatures are warmer than in the frigid Andean highlands. Boats are the easiest mode of transportation. And the waterways provide entry into nature reserves where exuberant greenery flourishes and rare fauna frolics.

peru jungle trip

For a full jungle immersion, spend 2 or 3 or more nights at a rainforest lodge. By day, enjoy excursions along jungle trails, to the tops of canopy towers, and into the corners of hidden lagoons where caimans and otters and sometimes jaguars bathe in the sun. After dark, relax in a hammock rocked by a warm jungle breeze and marvel at the mysteries of the rainforest’s nocturnal world.

Best Time to Visit

Puerto Maldonado is broken up into a dry season (May-October) and a wet season (November-April). However, being that it is a tropical rainforest, even the dry season tends to have some rain. While many would opt for the drier season, in reality there are pros and cons of both.

Pros of the dry season are that trails are less muddy and there is a higher probability of seeing parrots and macaws at the clay licks. Cons of the dry season are hotter temperatures – and sunny days usually see less bird activity and amphibians can be harder to spot.

Pros of the wet season are that temporal wetlands make it easier to see reptiles and amphibians and there is a cooler temperature. Cons of the wet season are muddy conditions, less likely to see birds at the claylicks and a higher chance of flight delays.

Climate & Weather

The southern Peruvian Amazon rainforest climate is broken up into two distinct seasons: the dry season and the wet season.

May through October are usually the driest months in the Amazon. Between June to September there are periodic cold spells called friajes that can drop the temperature to 10°C (50°F) for a couple days at a time. Friajes are cold fronts the blow up from Patagonia and then whip down over the southern jungle from the Andes.

The Amazon is a rainforest, so really there's a chance of rain throughout the year. But more constant rains that define the region’s wet season begin in November and continue to April. November and December usually receive the most rainfall.

Jungle Immersion

Puerto Maldonado is the main hub for exploring the southern Peruvian Amazon where the Madre de Dios River intersects with the Tambopata. For a proper Amazon adventure introduction, hop aboard a wooden boat powered by a small motor in Puerto Maldonado and cruise winding Amazon waterways to your remote jungle lodge. Ecotourism is a cornerstone of the developing travel industry in Peru’s Amazon.

Our team proudly partners with lodges that practice low-ecological footprint programs (recycling, use biodegradable bath and cleaning products, utilize low-to-no energy devices). Jungle lodges not only help support native communities, but also help spread awareness about the continued need for conservation efforts amid the looming threats that cause irreversible damage.

National Parks

Tambopata National Reserve encompasses 275,000 hectares (680,000 acres) of protected Amazon rainforest in the southeastern part of Peru. A sanctuary of incredible biological diversity, the reserve features stunning Oxbow lakes and different forest habitats. More than 670 bird and 1,200 butterfly species join a long list of endangered animals, such as giant otters, harpy eagles, and jaguars, who call this place home. The reserve boasts numerous clay licks along exposed riverbanks where macaws and parrots congregate.

Bahauja-Sonene National Park hugs the southern part of the Tambopata National Reserve. The enormous 1 million hectare (2.47 million acre) park protects the country’s only tropical humid savanna and some of its most biodiverse tracts of rainforest. Access to Bahauja-Sonene National Park is very limited.

Intense Wild Diversity

Did you know that two-thirds of the world’s plant and animal species make their home in the rainforest? And new species are always being discovered! The Amazon is the largest rainforest on earth and its crazy cool biodiversity sparks a cord of fascination with almost every adventurous traveler!

From cute and fuzzy to downright bizarre, the critters of the Amazon are a major highlight of any jungle adventure! Howler monkeys swing overhead, families of 1.8-m (6-ft) giant otters make their homes in the Oxbow lakes, and three-toed sloths, when present, are hard to miss! Though rarely seen, even by long-stay researchers, endangered pumas and jaguars call these tropical forests home too. In southern Peru, the clay licks in the Tambopata and Manu national parks are privileges sites to observe a high diversity of rainbow colored macaws, parrots, and parakeets.

How to Get to Puerto Maldonado

  • By Air: The Puerto Maldonado airport is small and a short drive from the town plaza. Flying is definitely the most convenient and time-saving transport option. LAN Airlines, Star Perú and TACA offer service to Puerto Maldonado. Flights are daily. A nonstop flight to Puerto Maldonado from Lima is 1 hour 30 minutes. Puerto Maldonado is a direct 55-minute flight from Cusco.
  • By Road: The recently completed Transoceanic Highway now connects Cusco to Puerto Maldonado on a mostly comfortable, though winding, paved road. What was once an arduous 15-hour drive has been shaved down to about 10 hours. Taking the bus from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado is a good option for travelers with a longer, more flexible travel itinerary.
  • By Boat: The waterways connect Puerto Maldonado to jungle lodges and remote indigenous communities.

Once you arrive in Puerto Maldonado, your tour guide will pick you up and guide you to the dock to board the open air boat to your jungle lodge. Usually around 1-3 hours to reach jungle lodges near Puerto Maldonado.

There’s plenty to see and do in the jungle city of Iquitos . Explore the local floating market at Belen. Sail to Isla de los Monos for fun with mischievous monkeys. Swim with dolphins. Wander the city seeking out the architectural legacy of the early 20th century rubber boom. Visit museums or book a tour to learn more about indigenous Amazonian cultures.

peru jungle trip

Away from the city, Iquitos provides access to excellent jungle lodges located up and down river. It’s also the point of departure for cruise ships destined for the Amazon headwaters.

Like any other area in the Amazon, the best time to visit the rainforest depends on your preference. The Amazon is a year round destination, with rainfall expected throughout the year. However, Iquitos is broken up into high water and lower water seasons, each of which have their pros and cons to consider.

Pros of high water season (December to May) is that it allows boats to venture deeper into remote parts of the jungle. During this time, you’re likely to see more birds and mammal species living in the canopy. Cons is that rainfall is usually heavier (December through March), there are generally more mosquitos, there aren’t as many usable hiking trails

Pros of low water season include more trails to explore the jungle on foot, fewer mosquitos, higher chance to see migratory birds and peak season for fishing. The main con of low water season is that remote lakes and small creeks (only accessed by boat) cannot be visited.

The Amazon experiences a warm, tropical climate with high humidity. Rainfall occurs throughout the year. Seasons in northern Peru’s Amazon Basin are divided between months with high water and low water. Water level of the rivers fluctuate as much as 12 meters (40 feet), resulting from the rain and snowmelt runoff flowing down from the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains.

High Water Season

  • When: December to May
  • Daily Temperature Average: 30°C (86°F)

Low Water Season

  • When: June to November
  • Daily Temperature Average: 37°C (98°F), slightly warmer than the high water months

Amazon River

The Amazon River, or Rio Amazonas, is the second longest river in the world. The river and its tributaries wind through dense tropical jungle in Peru, Brazil, Bolivia, Ecuador, and Colombia. From the city of Iquitos, travelers can take a luxurious cruise on the mighty Amazon River, which flows across northern Peru, or stay at a jungle lodge along its shores. Water activities include wildlife spotting from a canoe, swimming with pink river dolphins, paddle boarding, and piranha fishing.

peru jungle trip

Amazon Cruise

Amazon cruise packages are generally more expensive than a jungle lodge stay, but the additional cost comes with definite perks, including luxury facilities and endless rainforest and river panoramas from your private cabin. Ask your travel advisor for more information about cruising the Amazon in style.

Wildlife Diversity

Life in the Amazon rainforest takes many forms below, within, and above its leafy green canopy. It is home to big-eyed monkeys rustling amid trees, bright bird species, stealthy river creatures and other ecological oddities. In northern Amazon tributaries, pink river dolphins are but one unique animal that can be spotted in the national parks surrounding Iquitos. Keep your eyes peeled and camera in hand because seeing these Amazon rainforest animals in their natural habitat may well be the highlight of your jungle adventure. Jungle lodges surrounding Iquitos are the perfect hub for convenient access to remote jungle reserves.

Things to Do

Experience Local Jungle Culture

Travel by boat from Iquitos to the Yaguas and Bora communities for a unique cultural experience. A guide from the community will explain the local way of life and the history. During a visit, the local men, women, and children share aspects of their culture, including language, dance traditions, and artistic expression, with visitors. Beautiful jewelry, weavings, and art pieces are made by local artisans and available for sale.

Stay at a Jungle Lodge

The best way to experience the stunning beauty of the Amazon rainforest and see wildlife is at a remote jungle lodge accessible by river boat from Iquitos. Don’t worry, you don’t have to sacrifice comfort to have a true jungle adventure! The jungle lodges recommended by our team have running water, cushioned beds, and serve tasty meals. See the Hotels section on this page for more information. During the day, explore the nearby national reserves on a variety of guided wildlife, canopy, walking, cultural, and river tours.

Wander the Streets of Iquitos

The city sprawls outward from the Plaza de Armas, surrounded by streets dominated by moto-taxis. The Iron House, located on a corner of the main plaza, and the numerous beautiful mansions lining the city’s riverfront malecon are evidence of the wealth brought to Iquitos during the rubber boom era. Visit one of the city’s museums for a dose of Amazon culture. During your city exploration, take a break in a shady seat at a local cafe or restaurant to soak in the energy of this busting jungle hub at a slower pace.

peru jungle trip

Explore the Belen Neighborhood of Iquitos

A tour to the shanty town of Belen market and its residential area offer travelers a truly unique cultural experience. Morning visits to the Belen market are the best because it’s less crowded. Your guide will point out exotic fruits and veggies used in jungle cuisine, and likely lead you down Shaman’s Alley, where medicinal and spiritual Amazon remedies are sold. Next, hire a boat or canoe and explore the waterways of the Belen neighborhood where houses are built on stilts over the Itaya River or on top of balsa wood rafts.

How to Get to Iquitos

  • By Air: Flights to Iquitos touch down at the Coronel FAP Francisco Secada Vignetta International Airport serves Iquitos. The airport is located on the outskirts of the city, about 10 km (6 mi) southwest of the Plaza de Armas. Facilities include tourist shops, eateries, and ATM machines. LAN, Star Perú, and Peruvian Airlines offer daily flights to Iquitos. By plane, nonstop service from Lima to Iquitos takes 1 hour and 40 minutes.
  • By Boat: The Amazon River and its waterways connect the city of Iquitos to jungle lodges and other small port towns in Peru's northern Loreto region.
  • Iquitos is not accessible by road. Traveling to Iquitos by bus or car is NOT an option.

Once you arrive in Iquitos, your tour guide will pick you up and guide you to the dock to board the open air boat to your jungle lodge. Usually around 20 minutes to 1 hour to reach jungle lodges near Iquitos.

With elevations spanning between 150 m and 4,200 m of elevation, Manu National Park encompasses an astounding variety of climates and a bewildering number of plant and animal species. So many, in fact, that researchers continue to find undiscovered flora and fauna even after decades of intensive research. Accessible from Cusco and from Puerto Maldonado , Manu and its handful of lodges provide a chance to experience a wonderland of habitats from cloud forest to lowland rainforest in a setting unlike any other in Peru or the world.

peru jungle trip

Keep in mind that this is the rainforest and showers are possible at any time of year. Officially, the rainy season is from December to March. May to August is comparatively drier, though also much warmer.

Manu’s extreme topography creates multiple microclimates. Lower elevation areas are hotter with average temperatures ranging from 35 C during the day to 25 C at night. In Manu’s higher elevation areas, temperatures are generally cooler. Expect warm temperatures during the day and cool nights.

Temperatures can drop after heavy rains, reaching as low as 10 C (50 F). Another weather phenomenon, called “surazo” or “friaje,” occurs when polar winds from Patagonia sweep up the mountains and into the rainforest. Temperatures can be as low as 8 C (46 F).

Manu National Park Facts

  • covers entire Manu River basin
  • spans eastern Andes mountains (cloud forest) and Amazon basin (tropical lowland rainforest)
  • 2,000 to 5,000 species of plants, including 250 species of trees
  • more than 1,000 vertebrate species including 200 species of mammals and 850 species of birds, 68 species of reptiles, 77 species of amphibians
  • 1,300 recorded species of butterflies
  • 13 species of primates
  • rare species: giant otter, giant armadillo, jaguars, puma, Andean mountain cat
  • pre-Inca and Inca ruins and petroglyphs indicate long history of indigenous settlement
  • small communities of the Matsigenga Amazonian tribal group, largely along the Manú River or one of its main tributaries

Manu Biosphere Reserve

The Manu Biosphere Reserve is divided into 3 zones:

  • Parque Nacional Manu (Zone A) – the core and largest zone. Access is highly restricted. Within this area, Cocha Cashu Biological Station is an important site for tropical rainforest research center.
  • Reserved Zone (Zone B) – the Buffer Zone set aside for research and tourism. Located mainly within lowland rainforest, it harbors diverse microclimates and quantities of flora and fauna by the side of rivers and cochas (lagoons formed in the bends of rivers) as well as clay licks.
  • Cultural Zone (Zone C) – the Transitional Zone with small settlements of indigenous people. Allows organized visits with guides. Restrictions in place to protect animal and vegetable life.

Paucartambo

Located 2.5 to 3 hours from Cusco, Paucartambo is a point of transit on the overland route between the imperial Inca city and Manu National Park. Paucartambo is also famous for a 5-day festival in mid-July that draws revelers from all over the region in celebration of the Virgen del Carmen Festival.

Kosñipata River Valley

From Paucartambo, continuing past Acjanaco Pass (12,630 ft / 3,850 m) and the turnoff to Tres Cruces, the road begins its ascent into the gorgeous Kosñipata Valley dropping thousands of meters in elevation. This the place to go for river rafting and mountain biking tours through Peru’s gorgeous cloud forest mountains. It’s also the route to rainforest lodges in Manu including Paradise Lodge, Gallito de las Rocas Lodge, and Erika Lodge. The Quechua word kosñipata means “place of smoke” in reference to the heavy mists that shroud the eastern flanks of the Andes as they plummet to meet the Amazon.

peru jungle trip

Located at the meeting point of the Madre de Dios and the Manu river, the village of Boca Manu has a small airport that receives charter airplanes. It’s also a stop on the route over land and by boat from Puerto Maldonado. The checkpoint to go further into the park is in nearby Limonal.

Wildlife Spotting

Monkeys, bugs, and reptiles abound in the rainforest. If you’re lucky, you might also see the otorongo (jaguar), black panther, tapir, collared peccary, deer, and capybara. Forest trails and cochas (secluded lagoons) are the best place to spot wildlife while learning about life in the rainforest, medicinal plants and food.

Bird Watching

Many travelers come to Manu specifically for the birds. And with one of the largest bird lists in the world, Manu certainly merits such a specific interest. Airborne residents include the harpy eagle, jabiru, roseate spoonbill, and the cock of the rock.

Tres Cruces Lookout Point

An additional 60km from Paucartambo, Mirador Tres Cruces is a lookout point over the meeting place of the Andes and the Amazon. On clear days, it’s possible to see the peak of the massive Ausangate all the way down into the depths on the jungle basin.

How to Get to Manu National Park

There are three routes to get to Manu:

  • From Cusco: by car to Paucartambo, through the Kosnipata Valley to the Manu River
  • From Puerto Maldonado: by car to Santa Rosa Village 2.5 hours, cross Inambari River to Puerto Carlos, to Boca Colorado 45 minutes, up Madre de Dios river.
  • To Boca Manu: charter flights land at small airstrip, river transport to lodge.

Travel Tips

What to Pack

For a jungle tour, it is important to pack light and bring only the necessary equipment and clothing. Space on the river boat to your lodge is limited.

  • Shirts and pants made of light, breathable material
  • Long pants and shirts to keep insects off (made of light, quick-dry material)
  • Loungewear for the lodge
  • Comfortable, closed shoes – sticky, slippery, sometimes muddy rainforest trails make sandals and heels impractical
  • Water resistant shoes (especially during the wet season)
  • Insect repellant
  • Sun protection (hat, sunblock, glasses)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Cellphone. You won’t have service at your lodge, but good to have at airport and for photos if you don’t have a camera.
  • Local currency for small purchases and tips
  • Head lamp (and extra batteries, just in case).
  • Water-resistant binoculars are an added plus.

Wifi Access

Not all jungle lodges have WiFi, so if this is a necessity of yours, you will want to check with your travel advisor or directly with the lodge before traveling. However, even if WiFi is available, it is usually spotty and slow. A visit to the Amazon is more of an “off-the-grid” kind of experience. To keep your loved ones in the know, simply inform them of which days you’ll be in the jungle and alert them to the possibility that you will have little to no service.

Safety Tips

Most of your free time will be in the comfort of the grounds of your lodge. If out on an excursion, be sure not to wander off but rather to stay with the group. It is best not the wander off alone at night, as it is, in fact, a jungle with potential of confronting a range of wild animals. Be sure to have a reusable water bottle with you for day trips and hikes.

For travel to tropical forest regions, the US Travel Advisory recommends malaria medication and the yellow fever vaccine. Talk with your doctor before a trip to the Amazon in Peru to discuss the best option for you.

Protect yourself from the itchy bites of mosquitoes by wearing loose fitting long shirts and pants. Apply insect repellant to exposed skin. At night, use the mosquito net hanging over your bed.

Amazon Wildlife

Guided excursions into the Amazon rainforest to spot unique animals are included in a stay at almost every jungle lodge in the Iquitos region. Naturalist guides point out unique wildlife, and teach you how to observe them without disturbing them or possible endangering yourself. Stay on designated footpaths and do not get separated from your tour group.

Drinking Water

Bottled water and safe filtered drinking water are provided to jungle lodge guests. A reusable water bottle is always handy in the jungle.

Getting to your lodge

Many jungle lodges are only accessible by river transport. In Iquitos and Puerto Maldonado, lodge representatives greet travelers at the airport and then accompany them all the way into the jungle. River boats are typically open-air with a covering, much like a pontoon boat.

3 days - Tambopata Amazon Jungle

The experience itself was great with an awesome guide and good accommodations. My complaint is that the tour only loosely followed the itinerary I was given beforehand. Although all the listed activities were as-promised, there were some added that I would have liked to know about beforehand, even though they were good additions (like kayaking and zip-lining) and the schedule didn't line up exactly. That is, I anticipated going to the lodge at around 1pm on the day of arrival but I was transported around 9:40 almost directly after my arrival. Similarly (and more of a difficulty) I planned on finishing with the tour around 11:00 but was taken back to the town at 9:30 which left me with more extra time before my flight than I had expected. Despite these difficulties, the staff were very nice and accommodating and let me stay in their office during while I waited for my flight. They also honored their one free date change policy and allowed me to change my tour to an earlier date. Overall, I would recommend this trip, although I suggest for the tour operator to be more clear in their description.

Had a great experience and program (although they changed the order compared to what was shown). My guides were really helpful and spoke English really well (I had Fernando and Luiz). I would recommend staying as long as possible because the weather conditions may not be ideal and as with nature, you need patience and luck in order to see wildlife.

The Jungle Trek was completely incredible. Arguably this is a better way to reach the Machu Picchu point and it’s nothing I could have imagined! There was mountain biking, rafting, zip lining it was a lot of fun. Every detail was taken care of. Fortunately the groups were small, so we were able to enjoy the trail in a better way. The other companies have more than 15 people so it’s less friendly. Our guide was top level. He is a kind person, also very funny! Thank you and keep up the great work!

Peru Jungle Tour Reviews

This trip was truly the trip of a lifetime. Jesus really submerges you into the Peruvian culture and the three days you’re there, you are nonstop with activities. Our guide was so knowledgeable and he made the trip. His family grew up in the rainforest so he was able to tell you the history about most things there (the families, the foods, the animals etc). We went during rainy season, and still had a wonderful time. If you’re looking for adventure, meeting wonderful people, and being in nature - this trip is for you!
The overall experience was excellent for our group of 8. Our guide for the duration, Jonathan, was super helpful and so full of knowledge. He was able to find us all the animals we were looking for including capybaras and even a sloth. The food was nice but there aren't really any options. The accommodations were "basic". Very, very basic. Only a bare bulb with power from 5-9pm. If you can get past those issues, you will have a great time. All of the excursions were amazing.

Visiting the Amazon Jungle had been on our bucket list for quite some time, so after spending the best 2 days in Lima , we arranged a side trip to the Amazon Jungle Peru.

To help you plan a visit to the Amazon, I’ve compiled this guide that includes our best travel tips, prices and details on visiting the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

Table of Contents

The Best Time to Go

Exploring the Amazon Rainforest is a year-round possibility, given its consistent weather conditions throughout the seasons. Anticipate warm, rainy, and humid weather, regardless of the time of year.

The wet season spans from January to June, featuring temperatures ranging from 23 to 30ºC (73 to 86ºF). Daily showers are a common occurrence, sometimes with substantial intensity.

wet weather raincoat amazon jungle peru

However, it’s important to note that the higher humidity during this period results in more mosquitoes.

The dry season, from July to December, includes the latter half of the year. During this period, temperatures average around 26 to 40ºC (78 to 104ºF). While there is less rain, occasional heavy showers can still occur. Reduced rainfall results in a drier atmosphere in the jungle and lower river levels.

This creates advantageous conditions for exploration on foot and provides an excellent chance to spot caimans as they contend for diminished food supplies.

The most popular time to visit the Amazon is in July and August. The height of water in the jungle is reasonable, and you have a higher chance of spotting more wildlife.

Where to Go And How to Get There

Two notable areas in the Peruvian Amazon jungle are popular for ecotourism and wildlife experiences.

  • Iquitos, the largest city along the Amazon River in the Peru jungle, is the northern gateway to the Peruvian Amazon basin.
  • Puerto Maldonado is a city in southeastern Peru in the Madre de Dios region, part of the Amazon rainforest. It serves as a gateway to the Tambopata and Manu National Reserves, two of the most biodiverse areas in the Amazon rainforest.

When planning your journey, there’s no rule on choosing the best area of the Amazon to visit, but you should consider your itinerary.

Marty Madre de Dios River Peru Amazon

For instance, diverting to Iquitos might be impractical if you travel to Cusco or Lima. Instead, destinations like Manu National Park or Puerto Maldonado, the entry point to the Amazon rainforest, are closer and logistically make sense.

You can book a flight to Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado from Lima or Cusco. You can also take a bus from Cusco to reach these cities to begin your Amazon Jungle experience; this is the most affordable option.

While visiting Lima, we booked this 3 Day Jungle Tour to explore the Tambopata National Reserve.

We started our Amazon Jungle trip by booking a flight from Lima to Puerto Maldonado on Skyscanner and found the price of flights to be very reasonable.

The Perfect Itinerary for 2 Days in Lima

How Many Days Do You Need in the Amazon Jungle Peru

We’d recommend setting aside a minimum of three days to visit the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

In this timeframe, you can embark on several excursions that provide a glimpse into the captivating offerings of this region.

The most popular Amazon Jungle packages are 3 or 4 nights

Book A Tour or Travel Independently

We usually travel independently and book logistics as we go; however, after crunching numbers and working out the logistics of getting around in the Amazon Jungle in Peru, we found that it was much easier and more economical for us to book a packaged tour.

There are many tour operators to choose from online. After comparing many options, we decided to book this 3 Day/2 Night Amazon Jungle trip as it’s a Peruvian-owned company with excellent reviews from past guests.

For this complete package, including airport transfers, 2 nights’ accommodation in a bungalow Garden Lodge (with private ensuite facilities), all meals, drinking water, activities and a local guide, we paid approximately USD 350 per person, as we booked a nicer room with private facilities.

Where To Stay

Amazon Garden Lodge bungalow

The overall accommodation style in the Amazon Jungle Peru is typically jungle lodges in various regions.

The choice is up to you whether you opt for a remarkably luxurious or more basic option. You can expect comfortable accommodations in these lodges, usually in twin-share or double cabins with attached ensuite bathrooms.

It’s important to remember that your lodge is in a remote location, so electricity may only be available for specific hours during the day. This was the case with our lodge, so whenever electricity was available, take the opportunity to charge your phone, cameras etc.

The rooms have mosquito nets and fans to ensure a cool and protected night’s sleep.

peru jungle trip

You may choose a bungalow accommodation with shared bathroom facilities for those travelling on a budget.

Most of the lodges are within a 1-1.5 hour boat ride from Puerto Maldonado Boat Pier.

Accommodation providers usually offer all-inclusive packages that include transfers from Puerto Maldonado airport, accommodation, all meals, and several daily excursions.

Amazon Jungle Lodges in Peru

Numerous jungle lodges are situated along the river, ranging from inexpensive ones with very basic amenities to more stylish lodges with comfortable bungalows.

Here are my top picks for Amazon jungle lodges for varying budgets:

BUDGET: Hacienda Herrera Tambopata – Offering garden views, this property provides accommodation, a garden and a terrace. Pick up and drop off from airport or bus station is provided for free, has to contact property for arrengments. Is a 20 min boat ride from El Triunfo Port to the lodge.

MID-RANGE: Amazon Planet – A true ecolodge within a protected area surrounded by rainforest and wild animals in their natural habitat. Free airport transfers, river transfers, all meals are included. Jungle excursions and adventure activities in the area such as treking, biking, fishing, and boat rides can be arranged.

Full program itineraries are available for an add-on rate. The rooms in Amazon Planet feature private bathrooms and terraces. Breakfast is served daily. The on-site restaurant offers a daily menu and can cater to special diets upon request.

LUXURY: Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica – Located in the Peru Amazon Jungle, this hotel features tours to the rainforest, a massage spa overlooking the Madre de Dios forest and rooms with hammocks and balconies. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the rates.

There are eco-friendly bathroom amenities and private bathrooms. The hotel is a 45-minute boat ride from Puerto Maldonado. Cusco is a 25-minute flight away.

9 Weird Drinks In The World That Will Surprise You

What You Can See in the Amazon Jungle in Peru

The Amazon jungle in Peru is like a vast garden with many plants. You’ll find towering trees, like the Ceiba and Kapok, that stand really tall. Some trees, like the rubber tree, have been essential for making rubber.

There are plants that people have used for medicine for a long time, like the Cinchona tree, which helps treat malaria, and the Cat’s Claw, which indigenous communities have used traditionally.

On the trees, you’ll see colourful plants called bromeliads and orchids. Palms, like the Açaí and Assai, give us tasty fruits.

Vines and climbers, such as the vanilla orchid and passionflower, make the forest look even more beautiful. All these plants create a rich and amazing environment in the Peruvian Amazon rainforest.

monkey island Amazon Jungle Peru

The most commonly seen animals in the Amazon jungle are monkeys (squirrel monkeys and howler monkeys), caimans, sloths, frogs, tarantulas, piranhas, and birds such as herons, and the hoatzin (stink bird).

If you’re fortunate, you may see the endangered giant otter.

Of course, the frequency and proximity of wildlife sightings often depend on luck when exploring the Amazon Jungle.

Nonetheless, it remains a fantastic destination with ample opportunities to encounter and observe various forms of wildlife.

Activities in the Peruvian Amazon Jungle

With its distinctive geography and captivating flora and fauna, the Amazon Jungle in Peru offers some incredible places to visit and activities to engage in.

Here are some of the best ways to explore and appreciate this region and its wonders.

Jungle Walk: Take a trek through the rainforest accompanied by your guide, who will showcase and educate you about a diverse array of exotic plants and wildlife.

A jungle walk in Tambopata National Reserve

Go Kayaking on the River: Explore the calm waters of small rivers and lakes with a kayak, offering opportunities to observe caimans and various birds.

Go Fishing: Drop in a line and see if you can catch dinner! Don’t expect to catch a large fish, but it’s a fun activity, and you can enjoy a spot of birdwatching at the same time.

Discover Lake Sandoval: Visit Lake Sandoval, which is located in the Tambopata National Reserve. Hike 3 km through the park to reach the shores of Lake Sandoval.

Ride on a paddle boat on the lake and look for birds such as hoatzins, monkeys, and various flora. This activity was a real highlight of our trip to the Amazon Jungle in Peru.

What to Pack for Amazon Jungle in Peru

We recommend packing some lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing, and you will need a waterproof jacket (or poncho ); plus, it’s worth considering waterproof pants .

TIP: Dress in light, neutral colours to avoid mosquitoes.

Trousers and long sleeves are necessary when taking jungle walks to protect yourself from mosquitoes and spikey plants.

Add the following items to your packing list:

  • A head torch for night walks through the jungle.
  • Binoculars for a closer look at the Amazon wildlife.
  • A good power bank to charge your electronics, as electricity is limited.
  • Mosquito repellent is essential whether you travel in the wet or dry season.
  • Practical walking or trekking shoes , although rubber gumboots are usually provided.
  • A wide-brimmed hat to protect your head from the sun during river cruises.
  • Sunscreen – it gets scorching in the Amazon Jungle.
  • A reusable water bottle to keep hydrated. Your accommodation provider will provide drinking water during your stay.
  • A good book – View our recommendations for great travel books .

The Complete Peruvian Amazon Travel Guide

With amazing wildlife, vibrant flora, and unique local jungle communities, the Peruvian Amazon beholds exciting adventures for any traveler.

Let’s take a deep dive into the lush Amazon rainforest and discover areas to explore, best time to visit, travel essentials, and top multi-day tours.

How Big Is the Peruvian Rainforest?

The Amazon rainforest stretches across 2.1 million m² (5.5 million km²) and about 13% of that area is found in Peru.

While this makes up 60% of the entire country, only 5% of its population lives there. Getting to know the unique culture of the indigenous people in the Peruvian Amazon, however, is one of the top 10 things to do in Iquitos , and an overall great reason to add the rainforest to your travel itinerary.

selva amazonica con rio

The bird’s eye view provides a better understanding of how big the Amazon jungle really is.

Top 3 Destinations in the Peruvian Rainforest

The Peruvian Amazon is a vast area and, depending on which part you visit, you’ll get different highlights.

Let’s take a look at the three most popular destinations that travelers choose for their Amazon adventure.

Puerto Maldonado

Puerto Maldonado is a town in southeast Peru where the Madre de Dios River intersects with the Tambopata National Reserve. The waterways around Puerto Maldonado provide an entry into a very diverse region.

While it’s possible to arrange a tour that includes more adventurous activities, the area is most popular among travelers who prefer to stay in a jungle lodge.

Hidden deep into the Peruvian jungle, Iquitos is one of South America’s best locations to observe tropical wildlife and get an authentic Amazon jungle experience.

Accessible only by flight, Iquitos is the most adventurous and accessible option to explore the jungle. In fact, Iquitos is the only place in Peru where you can visit the actual Amazon river and not a tributary.

Because of its unique location, Iquitos offers the opportunity to see rare wildlife like the pink river dolphin and visit indigenous villages.

local in wooden boat on amazon river

When doing excursions on the Amazon river, you’ll almost always have encounters with friendly locals.

Manu National Park

The Manu National Park is a UNESCO-certified park in the Madre de Dios region.

With so many unique birds in Peru , the park is one of the greatest places for birdwatching and enjoying a variety of activities such as hiking and meeting members of the local communities.

Visiting the area requires a permit so you need to plan your trip months in advance.

When Is the Best Time to Visit?

The Amazon is a year-round destination that experiences a warm, tropical climate with high humidity. Because the Amazon is a tropical rainforest, the weather in Iquitos (and often the rest of the jungle) experiences a certain level of rainfall throughout the whole year.

Traveling in the low-water season (December to May) often means that most hiking trails are easily accessible and you can get deeper into the jungle.

Visiting during the rainy seasons (June to December) is possible, too. Some trails might be underwater, meaning that you’ll spend more time on a boat than on land. That said, traveling by boat gives you the chance to get closer to the wildlife of the Amazon river.

Pedro is the local parrot we met in the lodge while doing our 3-day jungle tour in Iquitos.

Peruvian Amazon Travel Tips

Working out what to bring on your trip through the Amazon jungle can be an overwhelming task, especially for first-time visitors.

Here are some travel tips to help you plan an enjoyable adventure.

What to Pack

Because of its high humidity, the Amazon is a perfect environment for mosquitos, so be sure to pack a mosquito spray.

Along with the basics (waterproof day pack, sunscreen, and mini first-aid kit), here are some other essentials that you should take on your trip.

Remember that the temperatures in the jungle get quite high, regardless of the season.

The key to success when wondering what to wear in the Amazon Rainforest is to have dry-fit clothing, long sleeve shirts, (zipper) outdoor pants, and a t-shirt.

When visiting the Amazon jungle, rubber boots (provided by the lodge) or hiking boots are a good choice. For your free time at the lodge, you can bring flip-flops, sandals, or normal shoes.

man with monkey on shoulders

Prepare yourself to make some new friends in the jungle!

Electronics

In the lodges, there is electricity at certain times of the day so you can charge your devices. Some handy things to pack include your camera, as well as a good pair of binoculars.

As with most other destinations, remember to bring your passport as well as any tickets/payment confirmations that you may need during your trip.

The Amazon rainforest is a safe destination as long as you take precautions such as checking the availability of life jackets on your boat, avoiding tap water, and bringing personal medication (if needed).

Currently, vaccination against malaria and yellow fever is not required. With that in mind, it’s best to schedule an appointment with your doctor before leaving, as well as apply sufficient insect/mosquito repellent and wear long-sleeved shirts and pants.

local kid in amazon jungle

In many different tours you can explore local communities and experience first-hand how people live in the Amazon jungle.

Exploor Peru Tour Packages

Exploring the Amazon is the trip of a lifetime and joining a multi-day tour is a fantastic way to make the most of it and get a memorable experience.

Here’s a walkthrough of our most exciting tours in Peru’s Amazon rainforest.

3-Day Tour in Iquitos

After meeting with your guide and putting your luggage in storage, you’ll head out to the port of Iquitos where you will take a scenic boat ride through the Amazon River. You’ll make a stop at Monkey Island before heading off to your lodge.

In the afternoon you’ll get to visit the beautiful Yanamono Reserve and witness diverse flora and fauna.

Back at the lodge, you will have some time to rest before catching your first Amazon sunset.

Later in the evening, you get the chance to take a magical open boat tour through the Amazon River. Once it’s dark and all lights are shut off, you can indulge in the incredible experience of simply listening and enjoying the enhancing sounds of the jungle.

lodge in amazon jungle

As you can see, there are only 2 things surrounding you when staying at our lodge: the Amazon jungle and the Amazon river.

On day 2, you’ll be able to enjoy some birdwatching and visit a riverside village of an indigenous tribe. You can also take part in a small piranha fishing expedition and, if you’re lucky, get a glimpse of the rare pink river dolphin.

In the evening, you’ll take a scenic jungle walk and observe frogs, timid snakes, and sloths.

On your last day of the Amazon tour, you’ll take a boat to Yanamono Island to enjoy the majestic Victoria Regia water lily before returning to the lodge for lunch and check out.

4-Day Tour in Iquitos

Day 1 – day 3.

Just like the 3-day trip in Iquitos, this 4-day tour gives you the unique opportunity to experience the same exciting activities, including visiting Monkey Island and Yamono Reserve, meeting a local community, and taking a fascinating nighttime boat ride.

tourists and local community waving

What many of our travelers like most is the local community visit.

With the 4-day tour, you get an extra day full of jungle adventures.

After breakfast, you’ll paddle on the Amazon river until you reach a small side river. There you’ll be able to witness the serenity and calmness of the surrounding nature without any noises that might scare off the wildlife.

Afterward, you’ll return to the lodge for a farewell lunch and check out before heading back to Iquitos.

Ready to Explore the Untamed Wilderness of the Amazon?

As one of the most biodiverse places on the planet, Peru’s Amazon rainforest offers some of the most stunning wildlife and range of jungle adventures in the world.

Whether you’re an adventurous traveler or a nature lover, the Amazon jungle is a destination sure to bring you an experience that you’ll never forget. Feeling inspired to learn more about the Peruvian Amazon? Here’s all you need to know about Iquitos .

Konsti from Exploor Peru 12 March, 2022 at 10:11 am

Hello Richard, great to hear from you! Yes, the mosquitos are terrible and make sure to have enough insect repellent with you! No worries, you get to sleep in comfortable beds in rooms that are entirely protected by mosquito nets so the bugs don’t bother you at night. Therefore you will get enough rest and no Mosquito bites. 🙂

Best, team exploor

From this point, you’ll be able to see the contrast between the turbid and black waters created by the union of these rivers as part of the Amazon River.

This sector is home to the pink and gray freshwater dolphins.

Amazon FAQs

Thinking about an Amazon trip? Here’s a list of frequently asked questions we often hear from our guests. Visit our Amazon Vacation Planning page for in-depth Amazon travel tips.

For many reasons, the best time to visit the Amazon is from June – November. During this time, the Amazon Rainforest experiences its dry season – meaning the water levels are lower, allowing access to forested areas and greater opportunities for land-based exploration excursions. However, it’s important to note that as the largest rainforest in the world, the Amazon experiences approximately 250 days of rain a year, spanning all months. Despite having varying seasons, like the “wet” season (December – May), travelers should expect a few hours of light rain at any point in the year. The rain is what continues to keep the rainforests and its rare flora and fauna alive.

Yes, traveling to the Amazon Rainforest is safe! In Brazil’s main center for visiting the Amazon – Manaus, you’ll always have guided activities with expert naturalist guides to help you navigate the jungle. Outside of town make sure you have all recommended vaccinations, according to your doctor and that you take a Malaria prophylaxis. Although along the Rio Negro, where most travelers go, there are very few mosquitoes!

All Amazon lodges and cruises offer jungle walks guided by local professionals to get to know the vegetation. Discover the importance of medicinal plants, spot vibrant macaws and parrots, and learn to identify the calls of rare animals. While listening to the sounds of the animals in the jungle is a common experience, actually spotting the fauna can be difficult. Travelers may consider the Pantanal wetlands for wildlife spotting, as it is less dense than the Amazon. Piranha fishing is also very popular. Local guides can also take you to different areas where other animal species can be seen, such as the pink river dolphins or macaws. Alligator (jacare) spotting at night is one of the most fascinating activities.

In general, the Amazon Jungle is not dangerous for travelers! Animals in the Amazon are not aggressive, as there is plenty of food available. Even the aforementioned “alligator” is a “caiman,” the peaceful cousin of the crocodiles you have heard about from Australia and the Florida Everglades. Your guide will always make you aware of toxic plants or spiders. Most guides are from the local communities, knowing well the healing properties of the plants that surround you. The one element to be aware of is Malaria: there is no vaccination, rather prophylaxis you take before traveling to the Amazon and stop taking as soon as you depart.

If visiting the Amazon in Brazil, you’ll get to the Amazon rainforest mostly by flying into Manaus, or for a more remote experience, by flying into Alta Floresta, with its luxurious lodge, or into Tefé for the most remote experience possible. In Peru, the main access points are Puerto Maldonado, Manu and Iquitos. In Bolivia, it is Rurrenabaque, Coca in Ecuador and Leticia in Colombia.

No – There are different areas with different flora and fauna. The main difference is caused by the altitude. Most of the Brazilian part is at sea-level or only slightly above it, whereas in Peru, Ecuador, and Bolivia, the rainforest sits on higher ground. The higher, the less dense the fauna is. Therefore, for example, if you are interested in birding, you would prefer the Peruvian Rainforest, as, due to the fauna being less dense, it is easier to spot birds. The Peruvian Amazon also offers some of the most luxurious river cruise ships such as the Aria. The Brazilian Amazon Rainforest offers travelers a wide range of lodges and cruises. Embark on a large cruise ship such as Hurtigruten or Iberostar, or a small, intimate cruise such as the Tucano. The Ecuadorian Amazon boasts Yasuni National Park, home to millions of species of plants, birds, insects, and mammals.

Typically, you would stay at a lodge or cruise along the river. It depends on what kind of experience interests the traveler(s). The advantage of a lodge is that your stay in the Amazon Rainforest can begin at any time, whereas cruises have set departure dates. While cruises offer plenty of departure dates, it can be challenging to be on a strict schedule. On the other hand, the advantage of a river cruise is that you see a vast extent of the rainforest, with different animals and vegetation, without needing to turn back after each excursion. Cruises also tend to include a stop at local communities where you can experience and learn about the lives of Amazonian locals. Whether you experience the Amazon on a cruise ship or nestled in a lodge, you’re sure to have a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

Testimonials

"trip of a lifetime".

The lodge staff made both the celebration of our Anniversary and my birthday so very special!! The staff at the lodge were all wonderful and friendly… We saw all 7 species of monkeys that live in the area. We saw multiple sloths. Too many bird species to count. A family of 9 capybara. And so many other animals. Just amazing!!

"The Best!!"

I can’t say enough good things about this tour and the people who run it. My experience was so much more than I hoped for. My guide was extremely knowledgeable and helped me see tons of wildlife… The chef is incredible, the lodge itself is absolutely beautiful, and the people who work there are so kind, welcoming, and eager to tend to your every need or desire. I highly, highly recommend!

We had a wonderful experience with Grand Amazon Lodge & Tours. They made us feel at home in the jungle. Our guide went out of his way to make sure we got the most out of our experience, we spent so much time on the Amazon river and saw so much wild life, it’s truly fantastic. Our tour was also individualized, so it did not feel like we were actually doing a tour. I recommend this place to everyone!!!

The Tahuayo Lodges

Why Two Lodges?

The Amazon Rainforest has some of the greatest biodiversity you can find within any single trip – but that doesn’t mean you’ll spot all those different species in one place within the rainforest. The Amazon has biodiversity because it is a complex mosaic of different ecosystems – and our two lodges have been strategically placed to help you to see the largest variety of creatures across those ecosystems. Read on to learn about our facilities and about the different kinds of animals you might spot at each of our lodges.

Our Rustic and Relaxing Center of Activity

The tahuayo lodge.

Welcome to the Tahuayo Lodge – our main lodge located in the heart of the Amazon. Amazonia’s main lodge on the Tahuayo River is not a resort, nor a hotel, but a comfortable lodge, suitable for adventurous travelers wishing to experience the Amazon Rainforest. Our vision with the Tahuayo Lodge is to provide our guests with most of the comforts of home while still remaining deeply connected to the nature all around us. The main lodge offers our famous Canopy Experience , all-inclusive Peruvian/ International style buffet meals, private bathrooms, WI-FI, and electricity (limited) provided by solar panels. Please let us know ahead of time if you require special dietary accomodations.

A Cozy Stay In Our Screened Cabins

Your room at the main lodge.

There are seventeen cabins at our main lodge; some are honeymoon cabins, with a king-size bed, others are cabins with two beds and a few are family style cabins with two floors with a full bed on the first floor and several single beds on the second floor. More than half of the cabins now have new private bathrooms. The others, often used for student groups, have shared bathrooms. Each cabin is raised above the jungle floor on stilts and is connected to other buildings of the lodge by a raised boardwalk. Our modern flush toilets and warm water showers use a sanitary septic system.

Different Species Can Be Found At Each Lodge

Wildlife at the tahuayo lodge.

From the Tahuayo Lodge we can explore several different ecosystems: igapo (actually several different categories of igapo as described by Dr. Randall Myster in his book Igapo forests of the Amazon Basin – he did much of his investigations for his research from our lodges); tahuampa (or flooded forest); terra firme forest and cochas (remnant oxbow lakes) in various stages of ecological succession. What this means in a practical sense is that from the Tahuayo Lodge you will be able to get into ecosystems that have pink dolphins, sloths, night monkeys, manakins, trogons, howler monkeys, poison dart frogs, jacanas, pygmy marmosets, neotropical river otters, harlequin toads, tamarins and other species not typically found in the ecosystems near the research center.

A secluded stay in the heart of the jungle, the amazon research center lodge.

Formally registered as an official Research Institution recognized by CONCYTEC (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación), the Amazon Research Center Peru Lodge (ARC) is located approximately 15 km upriver from the main Tahuayo Lodge. The ARC Lodge is smaller, quieter, more remote and in more pristine undisturbed forest with a different variety of wildlife. The centerpiece of the ARC is our trail grid system, the largest of its kind in the Amazon with 55 miles (75 km) of trails spread over more than 1000 acres (2200 ha) and slicing through four different ecosystems. While it is less opulent than our main lodge, the arc is cozy and quiet with private cabins, a hammock room, 24 hour electricity by solar panels, Wi-Fi through satellite connection, warm water showers and modern plumbing (in shared facilities) and delicious buffet-style meals.

Delve Into The Depths Of The Trail Grid

Wildlife at the arc.

With the largest scientific trail system offered in the Amazon we have access to 4 different ecosystems as well as greater chances of seeing wildlife due to the ARC’s secluded location – 15km from the nearest man-made structure. The ecosystems near the ARC that you can’t access from the main lodge are the high and low restinga forest, bajial forest, aguajal (palm swamp), a different kind of terra firme forest, and also cochas in different stages of ecological succession. From these ecosystems, we can find giant river otters, sakis, capuchins, woolly monkeys, titi monkeys, blue and yellow macaws, tamandua, large caiman and other species not usually encountered near to the main lodge.

Your Convenient Stay in Iquitos

Vista amazonica bed & breakfast.

For our guests convenience we also offer our bed & breakfast service in Iquitos city. A great addition to our main office and port complex, the rooms here are exclusively offered to our jungle guests, so you will not find much information about it online except on our website. It is located right on the riverbank and is only a few minutes away from the main plaza (tourist district) by motor taxi. If you have the time, it is a great place to stay for a few days before or after your visit to our lodges. These rooms fill up fast so please let us know well in advance if you wish to add a stay at “Vista Amazonica” to enhance your trip!

The Amazon is Peru: What to Know About the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon Rainforest in Peru , often referred to as the Peruvian Amazon , is a mesmerizing natural wonder that stretches across the vast expanse of Peru’s Amazon Basin. Covering approximately 60% of the country’s territory, it is a land of incredible biodiversity, stunning landscapes, and profound cultural significance.

Spanning over 782,000 square kilometers (302,000 square miles), the Peruvian Amazon is part of the larger Amazon Rainforest , often referred to as the “Lungs of the Earth” due to its crucial role in regulating the planet’s climate and oxygen production. This expansive tropical rainforest is home to an astonishing array of plant and animal species, many of which are found nowhere else on Earth.

The Peruvian Amazon’s unique characteristics include dense vegetation that thrives in its warm and humid climate, majestic rivers that wind their way through the dense jungle, and countless hidden oxbow lakes and flooded forests. Towering trees, lush canopies, and vibrant orchids create a captivating landscape that seems untouched by time.

In addition to its ecological importance, the Peruvian Amazon is also culturally significant. It is home to numerous indigenous communities that have inhabited the rainforest for centuries, preserving their traditions, knowledge of medicinal plants, and harmonious way of life with nature.

Conservation efforts and sustainable tourism play a crucial role in preserving the Peruvian Amazon. Organizations and initiatives work tirelessly to protect the rainforest’s delicate ecosystems, combat deforestation, and promote responsible practices among visitors.

Immersing oneself in the Amazon, Peru, is an invitation to explore one of the Earth’s most captivating realms.

The Northern, Central, and Southern Divisions of the Amazon, Peru

The Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, also known as Peruvian Amazonia, encompasses a vast area within the borders of Peru. It stretches from the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains to the neighboring countries of Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, and Bolivia.

This expansive region covers over half of Peru’s land and is divided into three main sections: the Northern, Central, and Southern Amazon.

  • Northern Amazon

The Northern Amazon region of Peru is known for its vast flooded forests and intricate waterways. It includes notable areas such as the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve , where extensive swamps and wetlands create a unique ecosystem.

This region is home to an array of wildlife, including pink river dolphins, manatees, caimans, and various bird species.

Indigenous communities, such as the Cocama-Cocamilla and Yagua , inhabit this area and maintain their traditional ways of life.

  • Central Amazon

The Central Amazon region encompasses dense rainforest and is recognized for its exceptional biodiversity. It features prominent protected areas like Manu National Park,  Manu Reserved Zone, and Manu Cultural Zone which provide a sanctuary for countless species

This region is renowned for its birdwatching opportunities , with a wide range of colorful and rare bird species. It is also home to various primates, including howler monkeys, spider monkeys, and capuchin monkeys.

Indigenous groups, such as the Ese’Eja and Matsiguenka , have inhabited this area for generations and continue to preserve their cultural heritage.

  • Southern Amazon

The Southern Amazon region combines rainforest with transitional ecosystems as it approaches the foothills of the Andes Mountains. It includes remarkable areas like the Tambopata National Reserve , which is situated in the Madre de Dios Department.

This region showcases a diverse array of flora and fauna, including jaguars, giant anteaters, tapirs, and a wide variety of bird species with over 600 species of birds recorded

It is also characterized by cloud forests that merge seamlessly with the dense jungle.

Indigenous communities, such as the Harakmbut and Shipibo-Conibo , have a strong presence in this region, enriching it with their cultural traditions and knowledge of the land.

Each division of the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest presents distinct ecosystems, wildlife, and cultural elements.

The Best Region Amazon Region to Visit: Discover the Jewel of the Peruvian Amazon

When it comes to exploring the wonders of the Peruvian Amazon, choosing the best region to visit can be an exhilarating decision.

I was torn between either Northern Amazon or Southern Amazon :

  • The Northern Amazon or Iquitos Amazon Jungle Region has one entry point and it is the city of Iquitos .

Iquitos can only be accessed by plane or by boat.

The flight from Lima is about 1 hour and 45 minutes. However, if you are flying from Cusco to Iquitos, then the flight is over 5 hours long and there is usually a stopover in Lima, and, of course, it is more expensive.

If you go for a boat ride is about 10-12 hours and it originates either in Brazil or Columbia.

One of the benefits of choosing the Iquitos Amazon Jungle Region is that this is the only region of Peru where it is possible to visit the true “Amazon River” . What it means is that you are going to be on the Amazon River as opposed to a tributary of the Amazon River.

In addition, the Amazon River has wildlife that is not found in any other tributaries. So, if you want to spot the very rare pink river dolphins , then this is the place to go.

  • The Southern Amazon or Tambopata Amazon Jungle Region has only one key access point in the Southern Amazon and it is the city of Puerto Maldonado .

The best way to reach Puerto Maldonado is by plane. The flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado is about 1 hour. If you are flying from Lima to Puerto Maldonado, then your flight will be about 1 hour and 30 minutes.

After doing all the research, I decided on going to the Southern Amazon .

  • First of all, the flight from Cusco was only about 1 hour long. And, it was very inexpensive.
  • Second, numerous daily excursions were possible in this area. But, what made me decide on Tambopata Amazon Jungle Region was the fact that it has the highest concentration of avian clay licks in the world .
  • Finally, I was impressed by some of the lodges in that area. Not only offering nice accommodations but also being so close to the wildlife viewing opportunities and having guided tours.

Time Your Exploration of the Peruvian Amazon Right

The Peruvian Amazon Rainforest welcomes adventurers year-round, but understanding the distinct seasons and weather patterns can enhance your experience.

Whether you prefer the lush greenery of the rainy season or the drier conditions of the dry season, each period offers unique advantages to consider.

  • Dry Season (May to October)

The dry season in the Peruvian Amazon typically spans from May to October. During this time, rainfall is minimal, and temperatures are slightly cooler, ranging from 25 to 35 degrees Celsius (77 to 95 degrees Fahrenheit).

The dry season offers several advantages for visitors, including easier navigation along the rivers and trails, as water levels recede. This allows for more accessible wildlife sightings, as animals gather near the water sources. The drier trails also facilitate hiking and exploration of the rainforest.

Additionally, reduced mosquito activity is a welcomed benefit for many travelers. However, it’s important to note that despite the dry season, the Amazon rainforest is still a humid environment, so lightweight and breathable clothing is recommended.

  • Rainy Season (November to April)

The rainy season in the Peruvian Amazon typically spans from November to April, characterized by more frequent rainfall and higher humidity levels.

This season breathes life into the rainforest, transforming it into a lush and vibrant oasis. The heavy rains help nourish the flora, resulting in an explosion of greenery and blooming flowers.

The rainy season offers unique opportunities to witness the Amazon’s captivating ecosystem in full force. It is a time when many migratory birds arrive, offering exceptional birdwatching experiences.

The rainforest teems with life, and you can witness the fascinating mating rituals, breeding behaviors, and the emergence of amphibians and insects. Despite the increased rainfall, wildlife sightings are still abundant, and the rainforest takes on an ethereal beauty. It’s important to pack lightweight rain gear and quick-drying clothes during this season, as showers can be frequent and intense.

  • Specific Activities and Wildlife Sightings

While wildlife can be observed throughout the year, certain activities and wildlife sightings may be more prevalent during specific times.

For instance, during the dry season, river-based activities such as canoeing and fishing are more accessible due to lower water levels. In contrast, the rainy season brings the opportunity to explore flooded areas, such as oxbow lakes, by boat. This allows for unique experiences like spotting giant river otters and witnessing vibrant aquatic ecosystems.

Additionally, birdwatching enthusiasts may prefer the rainy season as many migratory bird species visit the region during this time. On the other hand, the dry season offers better chances to encounter land-dwelling creatures, such as jaguars, monkeys, and tapirs, as they congregate around diminishing water sources.

Whether you choose the dry season for ease of exploration or the rainy season for the captivating lushness, both periods offer unforgettable encounters with nature’s wonders in this extraordinary ecosystem!

Choose the Right Tour Company for Your Amazon Adventure

When planning your adventure in the Amazon Peru Rainforest, selecting a reputable and responsible tour company is essential to ensure a safe and fulfilling experience.

Here are some tips and considerations to help you make an informed choice:

  • Experience and Expertise

Look for tour companies with extensive experience in organizing Amazon rainforest expeditions. Companies with a long-standing presence often have a deep understanding of the region, local ecosystems, and wildlife. Their knowledgeable guides can offer valuable insights, enhancing your understanding and appreciation of the rainforest.

  • Certifications and Credentials

Verify if the tour company holds relevant certifications and credentials. Look for affiliations with reputable organizations such as the International Ecotourism Society (TIES) or Rainforest Alliance. These certifications indicate the company’s commitment to sustainable practices and responsible tourism.

  • Sustainability Practices

Ensure that the tour company follows sustainable practices to minimize their impact on the environment and support local communities. This can include initiatives like waste management, supporting local conservation projects, and employing local guides and staff.

  • Customer Reviews and Recommendations

Read customer reviews and testimonials to gauge the experiences of previous travelers. Positive reviews highlight the company’s professionalism, quality of service, and commitment to customer satisfaction. Look for feedback specifically related to environmental awareness and responsible practices.

  • Itinerary and Activities

Evaluate the tour itineraries and activities offered by different companies. Consider your interests and preferences, whether you’re interested in wildlife spotting, cultural interactions, or specific activities like kayaking or jungle hikes. Ensure the company’s itinerary aligns with your desired experience and allows for ample exploration and learning opportunities.

  • Recommended Tour Companies

While there are many reputable tour companies operating in the Peruvian Amazon Rainforest, here are a few renowned options known for their expertise:

Rainforest Expeditions: With a strong commitment to sustainability and community involvement, Rainforest Expeditions offers immersive experiences in Tambopata National Reserve, focusing on wildlife observation and environmental education.

Amazon Nature Tours: This company specializes in small-group tours, providing personalized experiences in the Pacaya-Samiria National Reserve. They prioritize sustainable tourism and work closely with local communities to offer authentic cultural encounters.

Explorama Lodges: Operating since 1964, Explorama Lodges offers a range of accommodations and guided experiences in the Amazon rainforest. Their lodges are located near Iquitos, providing access to the diverse ecosystems of the region.

To clarify:  am not promoting any of these companies and I am not getting paid by any of them. I spent hours researching and reading the reviews.

The bottom line: I decided to explore the Tambopata Amazon Jungle Region and I went with Rainforest Expeditions . They are excellent and I am recommending them 100%.

Rainforest Expeditions offers three Amazon lodges : Posada Amazonas, Refugio Amazonas, and Tambopata Research Center. I decided on Refugio Amazonas. I recommend that you check them out and see if you like them and which lodge location and activities might be the best for you,

Preparing for Your Amazon Exploration in Peru

Embarking on an adventure in the Tambopata Amazon Jungle requires some preparation to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience.

Here are some essential steps to help you prepare for your journey:

  • Get Required Vaccinations and Medications

Consult with a healthcare professional or travel clinic to determine if any vaccinations or medications are recommended for travel to the Tambopata Amazon Jungle region.

Common recommendations may include vaccinations for yellow fever, typhoid, and hepatitis, as well as antimalarial medications. Start this process well in advance of your trip to allow time for immunizations and medication schedules.

  • Stay Physically Active and Fit

Preparing for the physical demands of jungle exploration can enhance your experience. Engage in regular physical activity leading up to your trip to build stamina and endurance. Walking, hiking, and cardio exercises can help prepare your body for the activities and terrain you may encounter in the rainforest.

  • Check Travel Documents and Insurance

Ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months beyond your planned departure date. Check visa requirements for Peru and make any necessary arrangements. Additionally, obtain comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies, trip cancellations, and lost belongings.

Safety Precautions in Amazonian Rainforest, Peru

When exploring the Tambopata Amazon Jungle, it is important to prioritize safety to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience.

Here are some safety precautions to consider:

  • Follow the Guidance of Experienced Guides

Listen to and follow the instructions of your experienced local guides. They possess valuable knowledge about the region, wildlife behavior, and potential hazards. Respect their guidance to ensure your safety!

  • Wildlife Interaction

Maintain a respectful distance from wildlife and never attempt to touch or feed them. Some animals may appear docile but can be unpredictable and potentially dangerous.

Observe wildlife from a safe distance and use binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens for a closer look.

Avoid approaching or disturbing nesting sites or breeding areas.

  • Water Safety

When participating in water-based activities, such as canoeing or swimming, wear a life jacket and follow the safety guidelines provided by your guides.

Be cautious of currents, submerged objects, or potentially harmful aquatic life. Avoid swimming in unknown or unmonitored areas.

  • Insect Protection

The Tambopata Amazon Jungle is known for its diverse insect population. Protect yourself from mosquito bites by wearing long-sleeved shirts, and long pants, and applying insect repellent to exposed skin. Use bed nets or ensure your accommodations have proper insect protection in place.

  • Sun Protection

The tropical climate of the rainforest means strong sun exposure. Protect yourself by wearing a hat, and sunglasses, and applying sunscreen with a high SPF. Seek shade during the hottest hours of the day and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

  • Trail Safety

Stick to designated trails and paths provided by your guides. Venturing off on your own can increase the risk of getting lost or encountering potentially dangerous situations.

Be cautious of uneven terrain, slippery surfaces, and obstacles such as fallen branches or tree roots.

  • Respect Local Customs and Wildlife

Respect the customs and traditions of the local indigenous communities. Seek permission before taking photos or engaging in any activities that may disrupt their way of life.

Avoid littering and minimize your impact on the environment. Refrain from collecting or removing any plants, animals, or artifacts from the rainforest.

  • Stay Hydrated and Healthy

Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated in the humid rainforest environment. Be cautious of consuming water from unknown sources and opt for bottled or filtered water. Follow good hygiene practices, such as washing hands regularly, to prevent illnesses.

Best Jungle Excursions and Activities at Refugio Amazonas Lodge

Refugio Amazonas offers a la carte activities which will allow you to create a unique and personal experience.

As soon as you get to the Refugio Amazonas Lodge, your guide will talk to you about all the activities that are available. So, choose the ones that interest you.

Following are some of the activities that I have done at Refugio Amazonas Lodge:

Chunchi Macaw Clay Lick Excursion

One of the fascinating activities offered at Refugio Amazonas Lodge is the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick Excursion .

The Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick is a natural phenomenon where vibrant macaws and other parrot species gather to feed on mineral-rich clay deposits. This activity provides an incredible opportunity to witness the spectacular display of colorful birds and observe their intriguing behavior.

Chunchi Macaw Clay Lick

Chunchi Macaw Clay Lick / 3-Day Adventure in the Amazon, Peru

GOOD TO KNOW: Donald Brightsmith , who directs the  Tambopata Macaw Project in the lowlands of southeastern Peru, points out that parrots in other regions around the globe consume foods that contain toxins, including those with tannins, and yet it’s only those in the western Amazon basin who visit these clay banks, also called salt licks or clay licks. Brightsmith argues that there’s a connection between this clay-eating and the fact that the western Amazon basin is lacking in salt.

Chunchi Macaw Clay Lick

Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick Excursion begins before sunrise since it takes time to reach the lick and early morning is the optimal time to witness the macaws’ activity.

You will embark on a boat journey along the Tambopata River, surrounded by the lush rainforest. The boat ride itself offers chances to spot various wildlife species along the riverbanks.

To be honest, the boat ride with the sun coming up is an awesome experience!

Upon reaching the Chuncho Macaw Clay Lick, your experienced guide will lead you to a strategic observation point. From a safe distance, you can quietly observe and marvel at the remarkable sight of macaws and parrots congregating around the clay lick. The vibrant plumage of the birds, combined with their lively calls and interactions, create a captivating scene.

Amazon, Peru

Your guide will provide insights into the macaws’ behavior, feeding patterns, and the importance of clay consumption for their diet. You will gain a deeper understanding of the ecological significance of the clay lick and its role in the macaws’ overall well-being.

You will have the opportunity to capture stunning photographs of the macaws as they perch and take flight. The combination of the colorful birds against the backdrop of the Amazon rainforest creates incredible photo opportunities. Additionally, you can use binoculars or a spotting scope to observe the birds’ behavior and appreciate their unique characteristics up close.

Chunchi Macaw Clay Lick

Chunchi Macaw Clay Lick / Amazon, Peru

GOOD TO KNOW:   Macaws are facilitating birds. Here are a few things that I found out from my guide:

  • Macaws usually mate for life. Once macaws reach breeding age at around 3 to 4 years old, they will pick a partner. Usually, they stay together for life. This is not just for breeding purposes. They genuinely care for each other by sharing food, grooming each other, and together caring for their offspring.
  • Macaws are very loud. They will announce their arrival at the clay lick with loud calls and shrieks. It is as if they are claiming their territory. Did you know that macaws give each of their chicks its own “name” and all members will know how to reproduce these individualized calls?
  • Macaws have a long life span .  Macaws live to be around 60 years in the wild. Macaws’ life span in captivity can extend for up to 80-100 years.
  • Did you know that almost all macaw species are either threatened, critically endangered, or extinct?

Sunrise Canopy Observation Tower Excursion

One of the captivating activities offered at Refugio Amazonas Lodge is the Sunrise Canopy Observation Tower Excursion . Here is what you need to know:

The Sunrise Canopy Observation Tower Excursion allows you to witness the awakening of the rainforest from an elevated vantage point . It provides a unique opportunity to observe the jungle come to life as the sun rises, casting its golden rays over the lush canopy.

Sunrise Canopy Observation Tower Excursion / 3-Day Adventure in the Amazon, Peru

This excursion begins before dawn to ensure you reach the observation tower in time for sunrise.

As you make your way through the rainforest, you will have the chance to witness the transition from darkness to the soft glow of dawn.

Upon arrival at the canopy observation tower, you will climb to the top, ascending through the layers of the rainforest. The tower provides an elevated platform from which to view the expansive canopy, offering panoramic views of the surrounding jungle.

PRO TIP: Once you step on the platform, you will be able to finally take a good breath of cool fresh air and feel free of the oppressive humidity!

As the sun begins to rise, the jungle awakens with a chorus of sounds and a burst of activity. You will witness the remarkable sight of the sun’s rays filtering through the treetops, illuminating the rainforest in a warm golden light. Birds and other wildlife start their morning routines, creating a lively and captivating scene.

Amazon, Peru

The observation tower serves as an ideal spot for birdwatching and wildlife spotting. Your guide will help you identify the diverse bird species that soar through the canopy, filling the air with their calls. Keep your eyes open for colorful toucans, macaws, parrots, and other winged inhabitants of the rainforest. You may also have the opportunity to spot monkeys, sloths, and other wildlife moving through the trees.

Throughout the experience, your guide will share insights about the rainforest ecosystem, pointing out unique plant and animal species and explaining their ecological roles. You will gain a deeper understanding of the intricate balance and interdependencies within this remarkable environment.

Amazon, Peru

GOOD TO KNOW: The average size of the tallest trees ranges from 30 to 45 meters (98.4 to 147.6 feet). A few trees grow above these limits, reaching 60 meters (199 feet).

After witnessing the sunrise spectacle and spending time observing the canopy, you will descend from the observation tower and make your way back to Refugio Amazonas Lodge. As you journey through the awakening rainforest, take in the sights and sounds of the morning, cherishing the memories of this extraordinary experience.

Mammal Clay Lick Excursion

One of the fascinating activities offered at Refugio Amazonas Lodge is the Mammal Clay Lick Excursion:

The Mammal Clay Lick excursion provides an extraordinary opportunity to witness the behavior of various mammal species as they visit mineral-rich clay licks. This activity allows you to observe and learn about the habits and interactions of these remarkable creatures.

The excursion typically begins in the early morning or in the afternoon. You will set out with your guide to explore the rainforest and reach the designated mammal clay lick site. The journey itself offers chances to encounter other wildlife and learn about the diverse ecosystem of the Tambopata Amazon Jungle.

Upon arrival at the mammal clay lick, you will find a concealed vantage point where you can quietly observe and wait for the animals to appear. The clay lick is a natural site where various mammal species congregate to ingest the mineral-rich clay, which helps supplement their diets and provides essential nutrients.

You will have the opportunity to spot and observe mammals such as tapirs, peccaries, deer, and possibly even jaguars. Witnessing these fascinating creatures in their natural habitat, exhibiting their unique behaviors and interactions, is an unforgettable experience.

Throughout the excursion, your guide will provide insights into the mammal species found in the Tambopata region, their ecological importance, and the challenges they face for survival. You will learn about their feeding habits, social dynamics, and the role of the clay lick in their lives.

You will have the chance to capture photographs or video footage of the mammals as they approach and interact with the clay lick.

Night Lectures at Refugio Amazonas Lodge

One of the educational and engaging activities offered at Refugio Amazonas Lodge is the Night Lectures :

The Night Lectures provide an opportunity to expand your knowledge about the Amazon rainforest, its diverse ecosystems, and the ongoing conservation efforts in the region.

These informative presentations are led by knowledgeable guides or guest experts who share their expertise and insights with the lodge guests.

The lectures cover a range of subjects related to the Amazon rainforest, including its biodiversity, unique flora and fauna, indigenous cultures, sustainable practices, ongoing research, and conservation challenges.

Each night’s lecture focuses on a specific topic, offering a deeper understanding of various aspects of the rainforest ecosystem.

The presentations are designed to be engaging and interactive, fostering a learning environment where guests can ask questions and participate in discussions. The guides or guest speakers use visual aids, photographs, and sometimes even audio or video recordings to enhance the learning experience and bring the information to life.

Refugio Amazonas Lodge often invites guest experts or researchers who specialize in different fields related to the Amazon rainforest. These experts share their firsthand experiences, research findings, and valuable insights, providing a unique opportunity to learn from their expertise.

Local guides, with their in-depth knowledge of the rainforest, also contribute to the lectures by sharing their perspectives and personal stories.

The night lectures often emphasize the importance of conservation and sustainable practices in the Amazon rainforest. They highlight the challenges facing the region and discuss the ongoing efforts to protect the unique ecosystems and cultural heritage of the area.

Night Lectures at Refugio Amazonas Lodge / 3-Day Adventure in the Amazon, Peru

In addition to the ecological aspects, the night lectures may touch upon the rich cultural history of the Amazon rainforest and its indigenous communities. This provides guests with a holistic understanding of the region, its cultural significance, and the need for responsible and respectful tourism practices.

GOOD TO KNOW: I listened to an interesting lecture about jaguars and watched the footage from several of the webcams set up throughout the jungle.

The area from Refugio Amazonas to the Tambopata Research Center is divided into two blocks on each side of the river. They form the Big Grid. Take a look at the picture right below:

Each blue dot on the grid represents a camera station. Interestingly, some stations have two cameras so that images of both sides of the animal are taken. It helps to identify the jaguars since each jaguar has a unique pattern of spots .

Every 3 months a field team visits each camera to download the images and replace batteries. Images are collected and uploaded into the AmazonCam Tambopata project on Zooniverse where scientists can identify the different animals.

GOOD TO KNOW: Interesting facts about Jaguars

  • A beast of a name: The word “Jaguar” is a modern version of “yaguara”, a term from one of the Brazilian Tupi-Guarani languages that means “beast”.
  • One of the “big cats”: The Jaguar belongs to the same genus as the Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, and Clouded Leopard. These species are the “big cats” and share a common ancestor.
  • Water-loving: Jaguars have no qualms about taking to the water in pursuit of prey or when crossing a river. They will rush into wetlands to pursue capybaras or small caimans. You can even see them swimming across the Tambopata.
  • Rosettes, not spots: One of the ways to tell a Jaguar from the similar looking Leopard is by the pattern on its coat. Jaguars have rosettes or distinct groupings of three or four dark markings that surround a smaller spot. Leopards, on the other hand, have spots.
  • Widespread but rare: Historically, jaguars ranged from the southeastern United States south throughout the neotropics to eastern Argentina. They quickly disappear from areas impacted by people. Furthermore, they are listed as Near Threatened by conservation authorities.

Jungle Night Walk Excursion

One of the thrilling activities offered at Refugio Amazonas Lodge is the Jungle Night Walk .

The Jungle Night Walk allows you to explore the Tambopata Amazon Jungle in a whole new light, quite literally. Led by experienced guides, this activity takes place after sunset, offering a unique opportunity to discover the nocturnal wonders of the rainforest .

Amazon, Peru

Jungle Night Walk Excursion / 3-Day Adventure in the Amazon, Peru

After dinner at the lodge, you will venture into the darkness of the jungle. Equipped with flashlights or headlamps, you will set out on a guided walk along forest trails that come alive with new sounds and mysterious creatures as night falls.

As you walk through the jungle, your guide will help you spot a variety of nocturnal wildlife species that are active during the nighttime. Look out for fascinating creatures such as night monkeys, tree frogs, tarantulas, insects, and other secretive nocturnal inhabitants of the rainforest.

The Jungle Night Walk is a unique opportunity to engage your senses in a different way. Without the distractions of daylight, you will rely on your hearing, sense of touch, and heightened awareness to explore the rainforest. Listen to the sounds of insects, frogs, and night birds, and feel the different textures of the forest under your fingertips.

Throughout the excursion, your guide will share insights into the remarkable adaptations of the creatures that thrive in the darkness. Learn about their specialized features, hunting techniques, and survival strategies that enable them to navigate the night.

Amazon, Peru

PRO TIP:   Do not miss the Jungle Night Walk Activity . It is the best! It is your chance to see the nocturnal species of the Amazon Rainforest.

While many animals go to sleep at night, many more emerge as soon as it gets dark. I found the jungle to be so much more alive at night compared to the daytime.

If you decide to participate in the Jungle Night Walk Activity, then be prepared that you will be walking in deep darkness surrounded by all the jungle sounds.

My recommendation is to wear long sleeve shirt and pants (not shorts) to protect yourself from the insects. Above all, make sure you have your flashlight or your headlamp .

Amazon, Peru

GOOD TO KNOW: You are going to see a lot of insects. Especially, ants. Did you know that the Amazon region contains more than 1,000 species of ants?

I saw leaf-cutter ants . It was quite a sight to watch them march, with each ant carrying a section of a leaf much greater than its own body.

Leaf-cutter ants are amazing! They cultivate fungus gardens , which they nourish with the leaves. The fungus is used to feed the ant larvae . What is very interesting is the fact that the bacteria that grow on their bodies enable them to secrete chemicals that maintain the health of their fungus garden.

Leaf-cutter ants form vast colonies with a complex society where different ants perform a range of duties. For example, the smallest minim ants tend the fungus garden, the patrolling minors act to defend forage lines, the mediae ants are responsible for cutting leaves and carrying them back to the nest, and the majors , the largest of the worker ants, combine with military discipline to defend the colony against intruders.

Brazil Nut Trail and Camp Activity

One of the exciting activities offered at Refugio Amazonas Lodge is the Brazil Nut Trail and Camp Excursion .

The Brazil Nut Trail and Camp Activity take you on a journey through the rainforest, following the footsteps of local Brazil nut gatherers. This unique excursion provides insight into the traditional practices and sustainable harvesting of Brazil nuts, a valuable natural resource in the Amazon rainforest.

After breakfast at the lodge, you will embark on a guided hike along the Brazil Nut Trail. Your guide will lead the way, sharing knowledge about the surrounding flora, fauna, and the Brazil nut trees that dot the forest.

Refugio Amazonas Lodge

Brazil Nut Trail and Camp Activity / 3-Day Adventure in the Amazon, Peru

Amazon, Peru

As you trek through the rainforest, your guide will provide fascinating information about the process of Brazil nut harvesting. You will learn about the sustainable practices employed by local communities to ensure the long-term viability of this valuable resource.

GOOD TO KNOW:  Brazil nut trees are one of the largest and longest-lived trees in the Amazon rainforest. They can reach 50 m (160 ft) in height with a trunk 1 to 2 m (3 ft 3 inches to 6 ft 7 in) in diameter. They may live for 500 years or more.

GOOD TO KNOW: Brazil nut trees produce fruit that looks like a large capsule weighing as much as 2 kg (4 lb 7 oz). The capsules are so hard that we can only open them with several machete swings! Inside the capsule are wedge-shaped seeds . The seeds are packed with healthy fats, selenium, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, manganese, thiamine, and vitamin E.

After a scenic hike, you will arrive at a Brazil nut camp, where you will have the opportunity to see firsthand how the nuts are collected, processed, and prepared for market. The camp provides insight into the traditional methods used by the gatherers, showcasing their knowledge and skills.

Amazon, Peru

During the Brazil Nut Trail and Camp excursion, you may have the chance to participate in some of the activities, such as cracking open the Brazil nut pods, extracting the nuts, and assisting in the preparation of the nuts for consumption or sale. This hands-on experience offers a deeper connection to the local culture and traditions.

At the camp, you will have the opportunity to taste fresh Brazil nuts and sample delicious nut-based snacks or treats. This culinary experience allows you to savor the rich flavors and nutritional benefits of the nuts while supporting the local economy.

Hi, really glad i came across this post as it pushed me towards visiting the Amazon. We ( my husband and 2 kids 11 and 13)are booked to visit Peru this July for 2 weeks. We fly into Lima and plan to finish at machu picchu . We would need to fly back to Lima but thinking now a detour to the Amazon might just work. What is the best way to travel around? I read a bit on the Peru hop, i like this idea as meeting others. I enjoyed travelling SE Asia meeting others.

' data-src=

Hi Jill, It sounds like you have planned an awesome trip. The most efficient way to travel in Peru is to fly. Good luck with everything!

' data-src=

I would like to visit from Cusco for 3 days and explore Amazonian Rainforest – do you have recommendations with whom to book (I am looking for Sept 1 to Sept 5)?

Much appriciated, Zlat

Hi Zlat, In my post I mentioned 3 companies worth checking out. Ultimately, I went with Rainforest Expeditions. However, as I mentioned in my post, I am not promoting any of them and you should weigh all the pros and cons: price, activities they offer, accommodations, etc. Let me know if you have any other questions.

The Amazon tours in Peru for the best wildlife

Peru’s rainforest is home to an incredible diversity of animals and plants.

For example, the Tambopata Research Center , in the middle of Tambopata Reserve, even offers a 20% chance of spotting wild jaguar.

Click the short video below for an introduction to the Tambopata Research Center .

Tambopata Research Center

Jaguar are not only the most sought after wildlife sighting in Amazonia, they are also symbols of a healthy ecosystem. This means where you can find jaguar, you find abundant wildlife.

Camera traps have also recorded jaguar from a small number of other Peru Amazon lodges. One of these is the Rainforest Alliance certified Tahuayo Lodge . This is found deep in the rainforest of Iquitos.

Other animals you can find in the Peruvian Amazon include howler monkeys (famous for the loudest call in the forest) and colorful parrots. You will also see sloths, sinister looking caiman and brightly-colored butterflies. The plants are also incredible. See giant Brazil nut trees and delicate orchids on your rainforest expeditions.

Of course, you can then find a seemingly infinite variety of other species, sights and sounds.

For an introduction to the Tahuayo Lodge , which offers a bit more adventure, private guide and custom itinerary, see the short video below.

Tahuayo Lodge

Amazon tours – A River Cruise or Expedition Lodge?

The best way to see the forest and make the most of your time in Amazonia is on a cruise or by staying at an expedition lodge. We will mention some of the top Amazon lodges in Peru further down.

Amazon Lodges in Peru

Many of Peru’s Amazon lodges are among the best lodges in the entire Amazon Rainforest.

These fantastic bases for Amazon tours have been carefully positioned. And this is usually after months or years of forest exploration. The locations are chosen for the top places to maximize wildlife viewing. Even the cruises we will list mirror this placement. And their routes are designed to offer the best places to see monkeys, birds and other Amazon life.

Amazon Cruises in Peru

A cruise can offer a more comfortable experience. This is because you have a more contained and hotel-like base to return to after exploration. The recommended Amazon cruises provide air-conditioning keeping you comfortable in the tropical rainforest. Cruises also visit different areas of rainforest. This means you visit a larger area for wider exploration.

Macaws - Tambopata Clay Lick, Peru

Lodges, on the other hand, can offer more connection to the rainforest. The trails have been carefully chosen to lead you through areas for the best wildlife. And even from the lodge you can spot wildlife. See monkeys and birds from the comfort of the lodge itself. You will also hear the sounds of the Amazon when relaxing in your suite or social areas.

Ultimately, your choice will depend on your personality and what you would like from your Amazon experience.

Amazon Tours from Iquitos

Iquitos is in the northern Peruvian Amazon. This is one of the two Peruvian choices to base yourself for an Amazon tour.

Iquitos is a reasonably large city in the Amazon. And you will have to travel quite far from the city before you find forest untouched by human hands. However, when you do, you will be rewarded with incredible wildlife spectacles.

This means Iquitos is best for a deep rainforest lodge or a cruise. Prepare to spend 6-days or more in the jungle at a lodge to make the most of your time. You will be far from the city where you can find the best wildlife.

The top example of a rainforest lodge from Iquitos is the Tahuayo Lodge mentioned further up.

Iquitos is also your choice for an Amazon River Cruise , such as the Delfin vessels mentioned below. As cruises move deeper in the Amazon, you can enjoy a good experience with only 4 or 5 days available. All the Amazon cruises in Peru will depart from Iquitos and usually from the port of Nauta. This is because the city is a port of the Amazon River.

Amazon Tours from Puerto Maldonado

If you’re after a shorter experience of a few days at a lodge, Puerto Maldonado is your choice.

The nearby wildlife-rich Tambopata Reserve is only a short boat ride from the town. Puerto Maldonado is also smaller than Iquitos. This means the rainforest is less disturbed.

Tambopata is also where you will find many macaw clay licks. Clay licks are areas of riverbank where large, bright and beautiful macaws feed from medicinal clay.

The Tambopata region is fortunate to have the most clay licks in the Amazon Rainforest. And a few lodges are close to all the action, as they know this is a main attraction.

Puerto Maldonado is also a great option for a deep rainforest lodge. And our recommendation is the Tambopata Research Center mentioned further up. This is where you can maximize wildlife experiences.

Within the Tambopata rainforest, you can find many large towering Brazil nut trees. You can even visit a working Brazil nut concession from the Refugio Amazonas Lodge .

Jaguar - Tambopata Research Center Amazon tour, Peru

Brazil nut trees are a fantastic metaphor for Amazon Rainforest tours. They require the surrounding forest in order to produce their famous nuts. With a disturbed forest, the trees will not produce their crop. In order to make money from Brazil nuts, therefore, people need to take care of the forest.

Our selection for a shorter Amazon visit includes:

  • The community-owned Posada Amazonas Lodge
  • The family inspired Refugio Amazonas Lodge

We will mention more about these further down.

Introductions to Top Peruvian Amazon Tours

Let’s get started with individual introductions to the top Amazon tours in Peru.

The Tambopata Research Center – 4 or 5-day+ Amazon Tour

Tambopata Research Center - Peru's Amazon Rainforest

The Tambopata Research Center is one of the deepest lodges in the Amazon. And you can enjoy fantastic wildlife-rich tours from a comfortable base.

For accommodation, choose from different suites options. These range from the Standard Suites to the spacious and luxurious Deluxe Suites.

This lodge is also used as a research base and is next to one of the Amazon’s largest macaw clay licks. From the Tambopata Research Center, enjoy spotting many different animals. See spider monkeys, howler monkeys, capybara and peccary. You will also observe the many different parrots, including the iconic macaws.

Clay Lick - Tambopata, Puerto Maldonado

Impressively, the Tambopata Research Center reports a 20% chance of spotting wild jaguar. This is one of the Amazon’s most sought after wildlife sightings.

Other animals rarely seen at other lodges but often seen here include the spider monkeys and peccary. Like jaguar, spiders monkeys are symbols of a healthy forest.

The Tambopata Research Center is one of the most comfortable lodges for deep jungle experiences. And it’s one of our favorites because of the expert guides, friendly staff and incredible wildlife.

To check availability for your travel dates, you can send the lodge a request using the button below.

The Delfin Amazon Cruises – 4 or 5 day Amazon Tour

The Delfin I, Delfin II and Delfin III are luxurious sister vessels. And they each provide an incredible Amazon Rainforest cruise.

Delfin I Suite, Iquitos, Peru

Although they are all luxury-class cruises, the Delfin I offers only 4 over-sized suites. This means more space and exclusivity for your time in Amazonia. In fact, the Delfin I more closely resembles a luxury boutique floating hotel than a cruise.

As one of the Amazon’s most luxurious tours, the cruise has been featured in many publications. These have included CNN Money, Conde Nast Traveler, National Geographic Traveler and Travel+Leisure.

Two of the suites include a private cold-water whirlpool. And with only 4 suites in total, space aboard the Delfin I books up quickly. Because of this, we recommend sending your request with the links below at least 3 to 6 months in advance.

However, there is also the Delfin II . This offers the same high standard of luxury and service but with more suites available. And you can also choose the Delfin III , again offering the same standard of service, delicious cuisine and excursions.

Click the video below for a short introduction to the Delfin I.

Delfin I

And here you can learn more about the Delfin III.

The Delfin III is composed of Lower and Upper Suites throughout the vessel. There are also the two Corner Suites on the lower deck at the front of the Delfin III. And there is also the Owner Suite as the premium accommodation option.

These front-facing suites provide some of the best views. However, the regular suites are fitted with large picture windows. These keep you connected to this incredible region.

Click the video below to learn more about the Delfin III.

Delfin III

Aboard these vessels, you can relax in your luxurious suite watching the rainforest pass by. You can also enjoy the elegant observation deck with a cocktail, tea or coffee. In the dining room, you will then be served delicious gourmet cuisine.

Enjoy delicious cuisine and attentive, friendly service.

The Delfin III Cruise - Amazon Rainforest Tours Peru

You will head out each day to explore the rainforest. With your expert guide, spot a wide variety of animals and plants. See monkeys moving through the canopy, hundreds of different birds and impressive Amazonian trees. You may also see pink river dolphins playing in the water, which are a favorite sighting.

The Delfin III Cruise - Amazon Rainforest Tours Peru

The Delfin cruises visit the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve. This is one of the most pristine protected areas of Peruvian Amazon Rainforest. The reserve is home to an abundance of tropical plants and animals. And you can find tropical toucans, colorful parrots, giant rainforest trees and many different monkeys.

Check availability for your travel dates and receive your itinerary by sending your request direct to the cruises using the buttons below.

The Tahuayo Lodge – 6-day+ Amazon Tour

This is a favorite lodge in northern Peru and is accessed from Iquitos. It’s a destination well known among Amazon wildlife-lovers. And it’s called the Tahuayo Lodge and Amazon Research Center.

The Tahuayo Lodge is one of the only lodges that provides a private guide and custom itinerary as standard. It’s a top choice for visitors serious about making the most of their time in the Amazon.

The Tahuayo Lodge is also certified by Rainforest Alliance. This makes it the only Rainforest Alliance certified lodge from Iquitos. This should give you peace of mind that you’re choosing a responsible tour.

Poison Dart Frog, Tahuayo Lodge, Peru Amazon

The lodge was founded by a biologist with a passion for wildlife. And it’s perfectly positioned for many different activities. These include guided treks to find poison dart frogs and canoeing the forest. You can also explore the largest primate research grid in the Amazon. And there is fantastic birdwatching to enjoy as well as many different lakes to explore.

Note that for an extra fee, you can choose a dedicated birding guide. And you will have a birding itinerary to see many of the reserve’s 600 different species.

You can try whizzing down the Amazon’s longest canopy zipline system. And you can visit local villages. However, the main activity is guided walks through the Amazon searching for incredible wildlife.

The Tahuayo Lodge is also one of the only lodges where the tour is customized to your interests. With its excellent service, friendly staff and impressive diversity, the Tahuayo Lodge is one of our favorites.

Note that the minimum stay at the Tahuayo Lodge is 4-days. But to combine both the main Tahuayo Lodge and Amazon Research Center, you will need 6-days in the rainforest. And the recommended time to make the most of your Amazon Rainforest experience is 8-days.

To contact the lodge directly for a detailed itinerary and availability for your travel dates, use the tour bubble below.

The Refugio Amazonas Lodge – 4-day Amazon Tour

Nestled in the buffer zone of Tambopata National Reserve, the Refugio Amazonas is a great option for a 4-day Amazon tour.

The lodge is within its own 200-hectare private reserve and is a little deeper in the rainforest than the Posada Amazonas below. This means you can see a little more wildlife. You can also visit a large macaw clay lick to see many macaw parrots feeding from the medicinal clay.

To learn more, click the short video below.

Refugio Amazonas

Explore the different trails with your expert Amazon guide. And you will find a diversity of forest life. See several different monkeys, such as capuchins, squirrel monkeys and howler monkeys. You can also find many different birds.

Visit Lake Condenado to find hoatzins, caiman, cormorants and other lake-living life. You can walk a medicinal plant trail and visit an organic jungle farm. And there is also a tall canopy tower for impressive views over the rainforest.

Your can choose from different suite options, such as the Comfort Suites. Or you can pick the premium suite options for a very comfortable Amazon experience.

The Posada Amazonas Lodge – 3-day Amazon Tour

This lodge offers a fantastic experience of 3 or 4 days in the Amazon. Because the lodge is close to Puerto Maldonado, it’s the best choice for a shorter tour. The Posada Amazonas is a community-owned lodge in the Ese Eja private rainforest reserve.

Nestled by Lake Tres Chimbabas, you will have a high chance of spotting giant river otters. These are a favorite sighting in the Amazon. And you can watch the endangered otters hunting, playing and feeding in the lake.

You will then explore the rainforest with your skilled guide. And you can find many different animals and plants. Spot troops of monkeys, giant rainforest trees and colorful birds.

Click the short video below for an introduction.

Posada Amazonas

The Posada Amazonas offers a balanced Amazon experience of culture and nature. Learn more about the Ese Eja community, walk the ethnobotanical trail for medicinal plants and visit a working jungle farm.

Enjoy delicious cuisine in the dining room. And choose from a variety of suite options. There is also a rainforest spa to enjoy a massage surrounded by the sounds of Amazonia.

Machu Picchu & Amazon Packages

Now we have some package tours if you’re interested in creating a more streamlined experience of Machu Picchu and the Amazon Rainforest. Note, you can easily book your Machu Picchu experience, such as the short luxury Inca Trail and then send a request to the other Amazon tours on this list.

But if you want to make this even easier, we recommend the following experiences. You have a choice of the 10, 12 or 15 day combination tours.

On these, you will step into a realm where history whispers through the Andes and every step is a story untold. The 10-day tour is a swift dance through time, offering the 2-day Inca Trail’s condensed magic, a glimpse of Machu Picchu’s splendor, Rainbow Mountain’s kaleidoscopic wonders, and the Amazon’s wildlife-filled forest.

Crave a deeper dive into the Incan legacy? The 12-day journey includes the 4-day Inca Trail, a richer narrative woven into the very trails of the Inca, the same mystical destinations with more time to savor the rich history and beauty of Peru.

For the ultimate odyssey, the 15-day expedition then embraces all these marvels and crowns them with Lake Titicaca’s tranquil majesty. This is where the Inca believed the Sun was born each day. It’s not just a tour; it’s a passage through Peru’s cultural and natural history to give you a deep experience of Peru.

WE CUSTOMIZE VIRTUALLY ALL SERVICES AVAILABLE IN PERU

The Peruvian Amazon jungle is one of the most biologically diverse areas on Earth. Most species have probably still not been discovered, or adequately studied. As a nation, Peru has the largest number of bird species in the world and the third largest number of mammals; 44 percent of birds and 63 percent of the mammals inhabit the Peruvian Amazon. Peru also has a very high number of species of butterflies, orchids, and other organisms.

The Peruvian Amazon is traditionally divided into two distinct ecoregions: The lowland jungle (in Spanish Selva Baja) is also known as Omagua region, Walla, Anti, Amazonian rainforest or Amazon basin. This ecoregion is the largest of Peru, standing between 80 and 1000 meters above sea level. It has very warm weather with an average temperature of 28°C, high relative humidity (over 75%) and yearly rainfall of approximately 103 in. The highland jungle (in Spanish Selva Alta) is also called Rupa-Rupa region, andean jungle, ceja de selva. This ecoregion extends into the eastern foothills of the Andes, between 1000 to 3800 m above the seal level. The eastern slopes of the Andes are home to a great variety of fauna and flora due to the different altitudes and climates within the region. Temperatures are warm in the lowlands and colder in higher altitudes. There are many endemic fauna because of the isolation caused by the rugged terrain of this area. The primary cities located in the Peruvian Amazon include:

Exploring the Enchanting Amazon Rainforest in Peru

T he Amazon rainforest in Peru beckons adventurers and nature enthusiasts to South America with its unparalleled biodiversity and cultural richness.

Spanning more than 60% of Peru's territory, this lush and vibrant ecosystem is a sanctuary for unique plant and animal species.

Importance of the Amazon Rainforest

The Amazon rainforest is paramount in the Earth's ecosystem, serving as the planet's lungs. Its trees act as massive carbon sinks, absorbing vast amounts of greenhouse gases and contributing significantly to the fight against climate change.

Moreover, this lush expanse generates a staggering 20% of the world's oxygen, vital for sustaining life on Earth. Beyond its atmospheric contributions, the Amazon rainforest hosts a significant proportion of global biodiversity, playing a pivotal role in maintaining ecological balance.

When to Visit

Visiting the Amazon in Peru is an extraordinary experience, offering unique opportunities for adventure and wildlife observation.

The Amazon can be explored from various points, but two of the most notable are Iquitos in the north and Tambopata in the south. Each region has distinct characteristics, and the best times to visit can vary.

Travelers can choose between peak and off-peak seasons, with each offering a unique perspective on the rainforest's splendor. Some travelers combine a trip to Northern Peru's Amazon region with a Galapagos cruise in Ecuador for a once-in-a-lifetime eco-adventure.

Iquitos – The Gateway to the Northern Amazon

Iquitos, only accessible by air or river, is a vibrant city surrounded by the lush Amazon rainforest. It's known for its floating houses and the bustling Belen Market.

High Water Season (December to May): This period is ideal for riverboat tours, as higher water levels make more rivers navigable. It's perfect for those looking to explore remote areas and see aquatic wildlife like river dolphins. The rainforest is in full bloom during this season, creating breathtaking scenery. However, expect heavy rainfall and humid conditions.

Low Water Season (June to November): This is the best time for jungle trekking and wildlife spotting on land. Water levels recede, revealing hiking trails and making terrestrial animals more visible. While there are fewer mosquitoes, the heat and humidity remain high.

Tambopata – Wildlife in Southern Peru

Tambopata, known for its rich biodiversity, is part of the larger Tambopata National Reserve. It has much to offer wildlife enthusiasts, including macaws, monkeys, and jaguars .

Dry Season (May to October): Ideal for wildlife viewing and avoiding heavy rains. Trails are more accessible, and the reduced foliage makes it easier to spot wildlife. The weather is more comfortable, with cooler temperatures and less humidity.

Wet Season (November to April): The rainforest is lush, and water levels in rivers and lakes are high, allowing for excellent river tours. Birdwatching is fantastic as many species are mating and nesting. However, be prepared for regular rain showers and higher humidity.

Geography and Biodiversity

At the heart of the Amazon rainforest lies the majestic Amazon River, the world's largest by volume. Its meandering waters carve through the diverse and lush rainforest, creating a thriving habitat for an incredibly rich variety of wildlife species.

The rainforest's biodiversity is awe-inspiring, ranging from towering trees and colorful orchids to elusive animals like jaguars and the iconic pink river dolphin.

Conservation Status and Endangered Species

As visitors embark on this ecological adventure, it's essential to be mindful of the conservation status of the Amazon rainforest and its inhabitants. The term “conservation status” is a crucial indicator, highlighting species at risk of extinction.

Endangered species, in particular, face a high risk of vanishing from the wild, primarily due to human activities such as habitat destruction and climate change.

Responsible tourism plays a pivotal role in supporting conservation efforts and ensuring the long-term survival of these remarkable species.

Things to Do in the Peruvian Amazon

1. Jungle Trekking: Immerse yourself in the heart of the rainforest with thrilling jungle trekking. Hike through tropical landscapes, encounter native wildlife, and discover hidden waterfalls and mysterious caves. Adequate preparation and adherence to safety measures are essential for a memorable and secure trekking experience.

2. River Cruising: For a more relaxed exploration, river cruising offers a tranquil and scenic journey along the Amazon River. This leisurely pace allows for intimate and luxurious experiences, with opportunities to explore various stops along the river path, each revealing a unique facet of the rainforest.

3. Wildlife Viewing: Engage in the thrilling recreational activity of wildlife viewing, observing animals in their natural habitats. This fosters an appreciation for biodiversity and contributes significantly to global ecotourism industries. Through responsible wildlife viewing, travelers actively participate in conservation efforts.

4. Community Visits and Cultural Immersion: Beyond the natural wonders, the Amazon rainforest provides opportunities for cultural immersion through community visits. These experiences offer invaluable insights into different cultures, fostering social understanding, promoting inclusivity, and raising global awareness through direct engagement with diverse communities.

Responsible Travel

Respecting the delicate balance of the rainforest is crucial for sustainable and responsible tourism. Stay on marked trails, avoid littering, and dress appropriately for the environment.

On the flip side, don't disturb the wildlife, remove plants, or engage in activities that may harm the delicate ecosystem. Interaction with local animals should be avoided; feeding them is strictly discouraged.

Embarking on a journey into the Amazon rainforest in Peru is not merely a vacation but a chance to connect with nature at its most pristine.

By understanding the rhythm of the rainforest, appreciating its ecological significance, and actively participating in responsible tourism practices, visitors can contribute to preserving this vital ecosystem.

The Amazon rainforest holds breathtaking beauty, inviting all to explore, learn, and leave with a profound sense of wonder and responsibility toward the planet we call home.
