My Review Of The 12/7 Eastern Caribbean Cruise On The Crown

Ok, relaxing a day before heading back to the rat race tomorrow....

My wife and I are fairly newbie cruisers (this was our 3rd one) but here are my impressions (not a tough grader) of this 10 day cruise on the Crown to the Eastern Caribbean:

Overall Cruise Experience:   Very good to Excellent!!!    This cruise was way better than our cruise to Mexico from SF two years ago on the Grand.  Sure, this one was longer by several days but I feel the ports that we went to in the Caribbean were more fun and had more to offer in terms of activities and sights.

Ship:  Excellent!!!    Yes, only our 3rd ship (Sea and Grand before) but we felt this ship was great.  I thought the casino was HUGE compared to the Grand.  We thought the ship's layout was pretty good and had everything we could have wanted.  The gym I thought was more than decently appointed with enough exercise machines and there were plenty of treadmills for one to use.  We liked how the buffet had two separate areas and the rear was always pretty empty to find a table.

Cabin:  Good!!!   We were on deck Baja and had a balcony.  The bed could have been more firmer and newer.  AC was working well.  Shower was excellent, strong and hot.  The balcony was not large, but good enough for us to enjoy.  What I liked about this deck was that it was close enough but not too far from the food and gym floors.

Ports:  Very Good!!!  Bummer we couldn't go to Princess Cay due to the wave conditions.  We loved all of the ports especially St. Lucia.  I was expecting more from St. Thomas, but that could have been due to what our activities were, which was limited to a tour of the island.  Would have loved to stay in Barbados longer.  Rum at Mt Gay distillery was yummy!!!

Excursions:  Good!!!  We did stick to official Princess excursions though.  We really enjoyed the all day Sulfur Springs tour in St Lucia which included a visit to the actual volcano, a decent buffet lunch and then a ride on a catamaran to see the Pitons and Marigold Bay.  Well worth the price.  What was not worth the same price was the Scenic Railway train ride in St Kitts.  Fun, but $120 per person???  Next time, I will try some of the suggestions to go with an independent operator for excursions.

Ship Activities/Events:  Well, hard to grade here since we didn't attend any of the shows really.  We did really enjoy the band, Project 5(?), whenever it played on deck or during the balloon release night.  I personally enjoyed the poker gaming time in the casino at nights.  I never played Texas Hold'em in a casino setting and the regulars there made me feel at home (while taking my money).  Too bad, the electronic table broke down with several days to go on our trip.

Food:   Good to Very Good!!!!    Yes, I know I spoke to a few fellow cruisers who did not think the food was that great but my wife is an accomplished cook and fairly picky and she thought our traditional, sit down meals were all pretty good.

Crew:  Excellent!!!!   The folks who waited our dinner table and kept our cabin cleaned were great.  I knew our gratuities were prepaid for, but made a point of tipping them all extra upon leaving.  They work hard!!!!

Negatives For Us:

1) Would have loved to check out Princess Cay island.  Shouldn't Princess credit us something (anything) for that miss?

2) Internet - slow and fairly expensive.  Oh well, we will just have to get to Platinum or Elite to get the good stuff for free....

3) Unlimited Soda Package - was charged for bottled water.  Should have checked I guess but still....

4) Poker Pro table broke down in casino with several days to go on trip.  Big bummer!!!!  Give us a real dealer!!!!

We definitely would go to the Caribbean again and maybe check out the other islands, say in the West and South.

Ok, back to work....

Glad to hear you had a good time overall.  We did the Crown in December of last year around the Eastern Caribbean and enjoyed it very much.  Our favorite stop is probably Grand Turk.  If you get a chance, make sure it's on one of your itineraries.  Antigua was another one that was really nice.  We did the catamaran...snorkel...lunch...rum punch and it was awesome!  In St Thomas I recommend taking a boat ride over to St John's and the National Park.  Well worth the effort.  Cheers!

Thanks for the review. We were on the Crown in the Mediterranean a couple months ago and enjoyed it a lot.  Unfortunately, when you miss ports , the only compensation you can expect are port fees to be refunded, if any. That’s just the nature of cruising. Mother Nature dictates.  We miss ports many times when cruising.

Regarding the bev package, did you try club soda?  That's what we do when the bottled water is not included.  Plus you can order a case of bottled water for a very affordable price.

Thanks for the report on the food.  Most who are disappointed want steak and potatoes each night; it you are open to other choices the food is usually very nice.  I always thing that if the cruise lines would offer a New York Steak and baked potato each night they might avoid the entire food decline/unedible debate.  JMHO.

Thanks for your review.

If you miss a port Princess will refund port charges (if applicable) only which usually only about to a few dollars.

In the contract it says that they have the right to miss ports for any reason really. Not their fault but sometimes with some ports they will issue some OBC to passengers accounts for missed ports.

Sorry you missed it.

As you discovered potted water is not included in the soda package.

Princess does offer water for purchase pre cruise in the personalizer for 12 bottles for $6.90.

Its only available pre cruise though.

They will be in your room upon arrival.

Thanks for the review!

If Princess Cays is cancelled, what is the alternative? Another port or additional sea day? We're doing this cruise in February, also our 3rd cruise.

In the past it would just be another sea day.

Hi TriumphGuy!  We literally were right there about to anchor and go to tenders but the waves were just too strong.  Considering it is "only" Princess Cay, I wouldn't expect Princess to come up with another port even if foreseen ahead of time.  Like Cheeseclan said, it would just be probably another sea day.  I feel the sea days on this itinerary were really needed since you get on, the sea days relax you, you are then hit with the ports right after each other, then the return sea days allow you to relax again.

You should have a great time in a couple of months.  Man, it was already pretty warm in several ports.  We in San Francisco are not used to such nice weather in December.  Needless to say, keep the bottled water nearby...

CruisinFinsUp

Our experience with Princess Cays is about 50% -- half the planned visits don't  happen due to weather - the tenders can't run safely if the wind or waves are too high.   We've come to expect it as a "maybe" beach day.

Thanks for replying. I actually love sea days. On our Panama Canal cruise a few years back we missed Costa Rica because seas were too rough in the port itself. While disappointing, we understood the need for safety comes first and enjoyed the sea day which replaced it. I wasn't sure what they did in the case of Princess Cays though.

Beautiful ship, disappointed in food

Apr 12th, 2024

For me food is a BIG Deal. Mediocre doesn't do it. Also, we tried to reserve our dining room 3 days before from home, no availability. On the app, no availability. From our room TV, no availability. At guest services, no availabilty. In person at dining room. Had to do on a daily basis. It was a huge hassle.

Very Disappointed

Apr 10th, 2024

This was a very disappointing cruise for my wife and I. Ship is very dated and shabby. 80% of the times we had coffee there were grounds in our cups. Our cabin toilet stopped flushing at least 3 times, which was unacceptable. Guest Services appeared to brush off the problems.

Apr 3rd, 2024

We booked this cruise and paid more than other cruises because it went to Grand Turks only for Princess to cancel this port of call. To say we were disappointed is an understatement.

Everything - especially the crew was wonderful except the food ! I actually lost weight !

Mar 30th, 2024

I love this ship - and I noticed there was a lot of staff this time. They really treated me well. My only complaint was the food. I could write about it in length, but they need a new Executive Chef. And luckily it is not my reason for cruising !

Disappointing experience

Mar 27th, 2024

We were disappointed with the unfriendly attitude of the wait staff . We think it is probably because they are over worked and underpaid . They looked miserable and resentful. I literally saw one who forced to put a smile on her face when a guest looked at her and immediately frowned when she turned away from the guest.

Crowded ship

Feb 28th, 2024

This was our first and last cruise with Princess. The ship was crowded and we were unable to enjoy several activities because there was no room or seats. The food was average. We have traveled on other cruise lines which were much better. The only positive was the staff. All were very helpful and pleasant.

Wonderful ship

Feb 15th, 2024

Great cruise - can highly recommend the ship. The staff could not do more for you. The medallion, the App and the internet were outstanding. We're doing another Princess cruise in the summer.

Caribbean Cruise

Feb 14th, 2024

The ship size is nice and Princess does a very good job. The crowd was older, which we like since we aren't traveling with kids. We were so disappointed that we only docked at 2 of the 4 islands and had to spend so many days at sea. Of course, we realize the weather is not the fault of the cruise line. They did credit each passenger $75 onboard credit on Friday evening because of this, but we had only Saturday to spend it and we were at sea. Since we had the premiere package, we didn't need photos or beverages and had to spend it at the stores. The lines were very long since everyone was trying to spend the money, and we bought stuff we really didn't need. Credit to our credit card would have been more appreciated.
