  • Explore Norway’s amazing coastline in winter
  • Visit the Northern Lights Planetarium in Tromsø
  • Learn about Norwegian culture, history and nature with our Expedition Teams

Community charm and culture

Your expedition will take you to a range of communities living and thriving on the Norwegian coast. Visit the exciting cities of Bergen, Tromsø, and Ålesund and get to know the local culture. You’ll fall in love with the many charms of the Lofoten Islands in Svolvær and the picturesque fishing village Reine. Our ship also takes you where the big ships of other cruise lines can’t sail, such as the hidden gems of Fjærland and Mosterøy which few ever get to see.

Polar nights and Northern Lights

Sailing north and crossing the Arctic Circle to places such as Narvik, Alta, and North Cape will mean short winter days and long polar nights. This creates the best possible conditions to experience the magical Northern Lights, the phenomenon that has fascinated visitors, artists, scientists, and locals for centuries. Learn more about this astronomical phenomenon with an exclusive visit to the Planetarium at the Science Centre in Tromso led by our astronomy expert - Tom Kerss.

Setting off from the White Cliffs

Estimated time of departure is 16:00

All aboard at Dover! MS Maud is here, ready and waiting to bring you north to Norway´s magical landscapes on the hunt for one of nature’s greatest spectacles: The Northern Lights.

Once on board the ship, you’ll pick up your complimentary expedition jacket, settle into your cabin, explore the ship and attend a mandatory safety drill. After the first of many sumptuous dinners and a welcome toast by the Captain, you’ll meet your expert Expedition Team. They are your knowledgeable lecturers, warm hosts, and good-natured guides throughout your journey. Many grew up and live in the places you’ll be visiting and are passionate about sharing their home with you. First and foremost though, they are there to keep you safe and well. They’ll be making it a priority to run through important health and safety aspects with you and your fellow guests.

When the ship sets sail, we’ll pass the white cliffs of Dover and head up to the North Sea. Stretch your sea legs and get to know MS Maud, your cosy home away from home. If the weather holds, take in the salubrious sea air from out on deck or park yourself in the Explorer Lounge and Bar to watch the world go by from the panoramic windows, maybe together with a relaxing glass of wine. Your adventure to the Arctic under the Auroral Zone is officially underway!

Later in the evening, we’ll call at Harwich, which is one of the most important ports on the Essex coast and boasts a rich maritime heritage. Famous explorers such as Sir Francis Drake, Sir Richard Hawkins, and Sir Martin Frobisher all departed from here on several expeditions of discovery. Perhaps most famously, the town was the home port of the Pilgrim ship ‘Mayflower’ and birthplace of its captain, Christopher Jones.

In keeping with Harwich tradition, and to celebrate the start of your journey, you’ll enjoy a local sea shanty performance before crossing the North Sea.

Norway bound

Ease into your journey and relax on board

The next day at sea will give you plenty of time to enjoy the onboard facilities, such as our hot tubs, sauna and gym. You'll also dine on delicious seasonal produce in our restaurants.

The Expedition Team will begin the first in their series of lectures over at the Science Center. Each member of the Expedition Team is an expert in their field. They’ll share fascinating insights about the places, history and nature you may encounter on your Norwegian coast adventure.

Find out about our Citizen Science projects, where you can contribute to important scientific research. Or pick up pointers on improving your wildlife and landscape images from our expedition photographers.

Views from Mount Hoven

Enjoy the glacial beauty of Nordfjord

In the morning, we’ll enter Nordfjord. We’ll pass Hornelen, Europe's highest sea cliff – look out for it if your cruise is passing in daylight – and head towards Jostedalsbreen, Europe's largest glacier.

As we cruise past picturesque inlets, you'll spy old fishing communities dating back to pre-Viking times. One of these is Loen, where we'll land if conditions are right. In the shadow of the mighty glacier, there's much to discover.

After a short boat ride to the floating jetty, you'll take the Loen Skylift to enjoy spectacular views from the summit of Mount Hoven. After, why not join exciting activities such as snowshoeing, sledding or winter kayaking.

Approaching the Arctic Circle

Today you can spend time in the ship’s lounge, soaking in a hot tub, or out on deck. Whatever you do, don’t take your eyes off the scenery as we sail through Helgeland county and the thousands of islands of the lowland area. Pick out the peaks of the Seven Sisters mountain range, thought to be the petrified bodies of seven troll sisters caught out at sunrise. You’ll likely be amazed at Torghatten mountain too, with its distinct hole right through the middle. Local legend states that the mountain was in fact the troll-king’s hat which turned to stone when it was pierced through by an arrow.

At this point of your expedition, we are around the halfway mark along Norway’s long coastline and you won’t be far off from the Arctic Circle. This is an exciting time as the further north we sail, the greater your chances of seeing the Northern Lights. The natural phenomenon occurs when charged particles carried by the solar wind disturb the Earth’s upper atmosphere, creating mesmerising ripples and rays. The end result is a cosmic lightshow of dazzling colour and dance. Our route along the Norwegian coast will take us directly under the Auroral Zone, a prime area of Northern Lights occurrences. We’ll be hoping to see multiple sightings of the lights in different locations.

The weather in northern Norway will be noticeably nippier and the amount of snow you’ll see will normally start to increase as well, which actually has the effect of making the landscapes seem brighter. Depending on when in the winter season you sail, the periods of daylight will be fairly short and grow even more brief above the Arctic Circle. It’s not complete darkness though as you’ll also get to experience the very romantic ‘blue hour’. This is an extended twilight that can actually be several hours long. The winter sun glows just below the horizon, bathing Norway’s fjords and mountains in a dreamy cobalt-blue light.

The Expedition Team will continue their onboard lectures which may cover local folklore and fairytales or a history of navigation along the coast from lighthouses to satellites. You might also learn about the quintessentially Norwegian love of the outdoors known as friluftsliv. Or perhaps pick up tips from the professional onboard photographer on how best to capture the aurora when they appear.

Idyllic Lofoten

One of the world's most spectacular destinations

A majestic wall of mountains signals your arrival in stunning Lofoten. The breathtaking scenery is a masterpiece of jutting snow-capped mountains, sheltered bays, untouched beaches and fishing villages.

With its iconic red fishing huts, or rorbuer, dotted against a backdrop of granite peaks, Reine is an idyllic place to visit and photograph. And if the weather conditions don’t allow, there are plenty of other, equally memorable ports for us to explore.

  • Included Reine - The Fishing Village of Å

Arctic Alta, Aurora city

Go snowmobiling or learn about Sámi culture

Lying 70º north of the Arctic Circle, Alta is the perfect destination for winter activities such as visiting snow hotels, dog sledding and snowmobiling. Alta lies directly beneath the Auroral Oval. If conditions are right, you could be in for quite a show.

Visit Alta’s Northern Lights Cathedral, with its striking Aurora-inspired architecture, and learn more about the science in a fascinating interactive exhibition on Northern Lights research.

Or why not visit a Sámi village and learn more about these indigenous and semi-nomadic reindeer herders. The Expedition Team may even give a lecture on Sámi culture.

  • Included Experience the Northern Lights Cathedral

Tromsø, the Arctic gateway

Join exciting winter activities in the Arctic capital

Our Northern Lights cruise continues to the capital of the Arctic, Tromsø. Set in a majestic landscape and packed with culture and history, this small, cosmopolitan city has plenty of fascinating sights to discover.

We’ll visit the Polar Museum to learn about the city’s Arctic and exploration heritage. See the Arctic Cathedral – with its huge stained-glass window, it’s one of the most striking landmarks in Tromsø.

You can also take the Fjellheisen cable car to the top of Mount Fløyfjellet for incredible views. From December to April, you’ll have the chance to try exciting winter activities such as snowshoeing, cross-country skiing or dogsledding.

  • Included The Polar Museum

Historic Narvik

Discover one of the world's most northerly towns

We arrive at Narvik in the morning. Sitting 150 miles inside the Arctic Circle and surrounded by three fjords, the town enjoys a spectacular setting. Spend some time exploring the galleries, shops and restaurants specialising in local seafood and reindeer meat.

An important port, Narvik was a strategic target for Germany during WWII. You'll visit the Narvik War Museum and learn about the Allied troops' liberation of the town.

Then ride the cable car to the top of Mount Narvik, or go hiking, snowshoeing or kayaking on the fjord. In the evening, we'll look out for the Northern Lights as we cross Vestfjord.

  • Included Narvik War Museum Visit

Expedition days

Take time to connect and learn something new

Over the next two days, we may go off the beaten track to wherever takes our fancy. There are many islands and fjords to discover in this region. In true expedition style, we'll go ashore in our small expedition boats, giving you the chance to experience the exhilarating feeling that comes from exploring a wild and remote island or discovering a hidden fjord.

Activities and landings will be picked at the discretion of the Expedition Team, and they’ll draw on their in-depth knowledge of the area to bring you to the most captivating and naturally beautiful locations.

You'll also learn more about what we've seen – with lectures from our Expedition Team or in our Science Center. You can join a Citizen Science project like Happywhale, which uses photos of sightings to track whale migrations around the world.

Norway’s dried cod capital

We dock at Kristiansund which is one of the most densely populated cities in Norway. Its urban area is spread across four islands with bustling waterfronts, scenic marinas and distinctive architecture, decorated in shades of red, yellow and green.

Kristiansund is also known as Norway’s ‘Dried Cod Capital’ because of its historic export of salted fish or bacalao, known locally as klippfisk. If you’re interested in the topic, head to the local Norwegian Bacalao Museum housed in a 250-year-old building.

There are optional excursions to sign up for, including kayaking with local guides or a hike with the Expedition Team. You can also join an excursion to the famous Atlantic Ocean Road – an 8km scenic drive, with eight uniquely designed, undulating bridges linking a series of islands.

Beautiful Bergen

Visit Bergen's UNESCO-listed Bryggen district

Enjoy the unique charm of what was once Norway's capital, Bergen. Today, it remains one of Norway's most picturesque cities, surrounded by seven mountains and the sea.

Stroll through the UNESCO-listed Bryggen district and discover its colourful wooden wharves, dating back to the 14th century. Explore Bergen’s cobbled streets and alleys on foot, stopping at fascinating museums, artisanal boutiques, cafés or a pub for a glass of local Hansa beer along the way.

Then enjoy a ride up Mount Fløyen on the funicular railway. At the summit, you'll find amazing views over the city. If there’s time, we might even venture into the alpine forest for a short hike.

  • Included Bergen - The Fløibanen Funicular

Cosy Egersund

A beautiful town of wooden houses and ancient runes

You’ll love the cosy, small-town feel of Egersund, with its brightly coloured wooden houses. People have lived here since the Stone Age, and you can even find ancient runes carved into rocks nearby. It’s also one of the best natural harbours in Norway – as a fishing town, Egersund used to land more fish than anywhere else in the country.

The best way to explore is on foot. You can take a hike in the hills or enjoy exploring the town on your own. For panoramic views, hike to the viewpoint at Varberg, a short walk from the town centre.

Homeward bound

Relax at sea as we return to Dover

As you cruise back across the North Sea to Dover, you'll have time to relax and look back on some of the incredible experiences you've enjoyed on this expedition cruise. Spend time in the Explorer Lounge & Bar with your fellow adventurers or relax in the hot tubs or sauna.

You can also enlist the help of our onboard photographer for editing tips on the photos you've taken on this cruise. If you have more questions about the Northern Lights and Norway, our Expedition Team will be on hand to fill in any gaps – head to the Science Center to discover more.

Return to England

Estimated time of arrival is 09:00

Unforgettable memories of Norway in winter

We pass the White Cliffs of Dover during the early morning. After breakfast, it's time to head ashore.

Dover is the gateway to the English countryside, so before you rush off, why not visit Dover Castle or the Roman lighthouse, reputedly the UK’s oldest building. You can also tour the underground hospital and secret WWII tunnels beneath the castle.

As your expedition ends, you'll take with you wonderful memories of coastal Norway in winter, Norwegian culture and history, and with any luck, the Northern Lights.

Not far from Nidaros Cathedral is Gamle Bybro, a charming wooden bridge that sits over River Nid and marks the entrance to the old Hanseatic district of Bakklandet. This neighbourhood features colourful wooden wharves that stand on stilts and host some of the city's most trendy eateries, making Bakklandet a key destination for all foodies. Following the scenic sailing through Magerøysund and after an early stop in Hammerfest, you arrive in Honningsvåg. This small port is the gateway to the wonders of the spectacular North Cape which rises 300m from the ocean, and at 71° 10' 21" north it puts you a mere 2,000 kilometres from the Geographical North Pole. Standing atop the North Cape Plateau you'll get the eerie feeling of being at the end of the world.

From Honningsvåg, look out for the striking rock formation called Finnkirka near the entrance to Kjøllefjord village. The building-like pillars were once an ancient sacrificial site for the indigenous nomadic Sámi people who still inhabit and herd reindeer in the region today.

The area is also known for its bird life, and Gjesværstappan, a bird sanctuary with up to 250,000 seabirds is home to some High Arctic species that can only be observed here on the Norwegian mainland. Day 8 - hammerfest and tromsø :.

Ports visited today : Mehamn, Kjøllefjord, Honningsvåg, Havøysund, Hammerfest, Øksfjord, Skjervøy, Tromsø.

Breakfast at the North Cape forms part of an early morning excursion (at extra cost). Your next stop, Hammerfest, was a settlement back to the Stone Age and is still playing an important role as a fishing port. Founded in 1789 to develop trade with Russia, Hammerfest reconfirmed its position as Norway's Polar capital of its time, acting as a base for hunting expeditions to the High Arctic. In Hammerfest the Meridian Column, erected in 1854, commemorates the first precise measurement of the globe, an achievement so important that it's become a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

As we sail, keep your eyes open for the Northern Lights, but you might also spot pods of Orcas and Humpback Whales migrating to these waters to feed on herring.

As early as 1891, wave energy provided power to the first electric street lighting in Northern Europe, and energy innovation is still a signature for Hammerfest with its large Liquid Gas Plant just outside town. From here, your next major stop will be Tromsø where you are invited to take part in a very special musical experience, The Arctic Cathedral Midnight Concert. Or why not head to one of the town's many friendly pubs and sample the local brew, Mack's Arctic Beer.

Day 9 - Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands :

Ports visited today : Tromsø, Finnsnes, Harstad, Risøyhamn, Sortland, Stokmarknes, Svolvær, Stamsund.

The Vesterålen and Lofoten Island are amongst today's highlights. Before you reach them, you pass through Risøyrenna, a channel that was specially constructed for Hurtigruten, providing the vessels an 'inside route' between Harstad and Sortland. Stokmarknes, where Hurtigruten was founded, is the location of the Hurtigruten Museum.

You continue through the narrow Raftsund, the picturesque narrow channel between the Vesterålen and Lofoten Islands, where, time and weather permitting, you'll take a detour into the spectacular Trollfjord where steep cliffs hug the ship's sides. Then it's on to Svolvær, the main settlement on the Lofoten Islands followed by Stamsund where the majestic peaks of the huge Lofoten Wall can be viewed. You leave the islands during the evening and set course for the mainland.

Day 10 - Arctic Circle, Seven Sisters :

Ports visited today : Bodø, Ørnes, Nesna, Sandnessjøen, Brønnøysund, Rørvik.

The Helgeland coast with hundreds of islets, fertile farmland and steep granite walls is worth getting up early to experience. Today will also be your last one north of the Arctic Circle as you cross it between Ørnes and Nesna. Marvel at the Seven Sisters mountain range where local legend has it that seven beautiful troll princesses, fleeing from an unwanted suitor, got caught out as the sun rose, turning them into the seven beautiful mountains you see today, and the myth about how the arrow from Hestmannen's bow formed the hole in Torghatten Mountain. The Vega Archipelago, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is close to your call in Sandnessjøen.

The islands were inscribed on this prestigious list due to the unique interaction between man and nature - over centuries the local population have protected the eider duck nests in return for the highly valuable down from the birds.

Day 11 - Trondheim and Kristiansund :

Ports visited today : Trondheim, Kristiansund, Molde, Ålesund.

Today gives you another opportunity to explore the city of Trondheim. Nidaros Cathedral, in which three Queens and seven Kings have been crowned, is Scandinavia's largest medieval building, and Norway's crown jewels are kept in the adjacent Archbishop's Residence. Some insider advice: treat yourself to a barista-brewed coffee and Nordic patisserie in one of the many cafés in the Bakklandet district before walking up to Kristiansten Fort for great views over the city.

Passing the islands of Munkholmen and Hitra you then cross the open sea to Molde, known as the 'city of roses' due to its lush Gulf Stream location.

You will notice the steep, grey, pointed peaks of the Romsdal Alps glinting in the sun. The town of Kristiansund, located on the scenic Atlantic Road, holds the rather obscure title of Norway's 'cured cod capital' because of the nature of its main export.

11E Bergtatt - A Magnificent Marble Mine

Day 12 - Rocky Islands, Disembarkation :

Ports visited today : Ålesund, Torvik, Måløy, Florø, Bergen.

Today, your Hurtigruten voyage will come to an end when you arrive in the City of Seven Mountains, Bergen. But before that, you still have a few nautical miles of fascinating scenery ahead of you such as the picturesque Nordfjord below the enormous Jostedalsbreen glacier, Norway's longest fjord - the mighty Sognefjord and the picturesque Bergen Archipelago. Take home your memories of the world's most beautiful voyage and the many seafaring companions and friends you've made along the way.

Aurora hunting: What it's like to chase the northern lights along Norway's dramatic coastline

If you want to experience the northern lights there is no better way than with an incredible group of like-minded people aboard the Hurtigruten Coastal Express.

Mountains with background of northern lights and water below.

An iconic feature of the Norwegian coast

Life onboard, hunting the northern lights, never a dull moment.

The next few years are predicted to be the best for seeing the northern lights due to high solar activity during the current solar cycle . So if you're considering planning an aurora hunting trip, now is the perfect time.

Most of us have probably written something along the lines of "seeing the northern lights" on our bucket list, but to that end, there's one important caveat you should be aware of. Very few are satisfied with seeing them just once.

Related: Aurora colors: What causes them and why do they vary?

As soon as these dancing ribbons of light fill the night sky, you'll be left awestruck, elated and ultimately, wanting more. Lucky for those of us on Hurtigruten's Astronomy Voyage , we got not one, not two, but seven nights of the northern lights , with some shows visible for hours at a time.

Full disclaimer:   Space.com  was invited on a press trip to experience Hurtigruten's Astronomy Voyage.

Bergen — Kirkenes — Bergen

Price: From £2942pp, includes breakfast, lunch and dinner + exclusive excursion to the Tromsø planetarium.

Duration: 12 days

Northern Lights Promise :  If there is no recorded sighting of the northern lights while sailing, Hurtigruten will give guests a free 6- or 7-day Classic Voyage to redeem the following season. Terms and Conditions apply.

If you're interested in booking the Astronomy Voyage head over to Hurtigruten's official site .

We began our journey in the beautiful port city of Bergen.

Famous for its fish markets, rainy weather and historic harbor district, Bryggen, the old Hanseatic Wharf is a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage site. With buses regularly shuffling in and out, Hurtigruten's official port is easily accessible from Bergen. It's also within walking distance to several hotels.

While we were waiting to board, the atmosphere was full of excitement, anticipation — and doubt. Will we actually see the northern lights ? How cold will it get? What is it going to be like experiencing the polar night? These are just a handful of the questions spilling from the eager lips scattered across the room. Together, we'd soon embark on a voyage we'd never forget.

We met our trip's astronomer Tom Kerss and tour guide Eva Stiegler at the port. They explained the trip itinerary and what to expect during our adventure with the Hurtigruten Coastal Express.

Then, after a short safety briefing, we were ready to board the charming ship MS Richard With — named after Captain Richard With who established the Hurtigruten Coastal Express in 1893. Our ship was renovated in 2018 and converted to a green hybrid ship in 2022. Battery packs combined with low-emission engines reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by about 25%. Holding a maximum of 590 passengers, MS Richard With is the perfect size for an unobtrusive voyage along the Norwegian coast.

During the 12-day voyage, we traveled over 3,100 miles (5,000 kilometers) up the coast from Bergen to Kirkenes and back again while visiting 34 ports, more than 100 fjords and 1,000 mountains. Crossing the Arctic Circle and experiencing the long polar night made us feel like we truly were on a voyage to the top of the world.

In 2023, Hurtigruten celebrated its 130th birthday. The company not only provides adventurous expeditions and specialized trips such as the Astronomy Voyage but it's also a lifeline for many remote communities located along the Norwegian coast. Delivering the post, home supplies and valuable transport links, Hurtigruten is welcomed in every port.

The Hurtigruten Coastal Express is the perfect voyage for anyone who wishes to have an authentic Norwegian experience. At some ports, you might find locals coming aboard to grab a cup of coffee and slice of cake in the bakery "Multe" or hop on for a quick trip along the coast themselves. Due to their smaller size (in comparison to large cruise ships), Hurtigruten ships can access remote areas and travel through smaller fjords, meaning passengers can experience even more of the rugged Norwegian coastline than if they were to take a larger cruise liner.

As we know, the northern lights are fickle creatures — but with the company's generous " Northern Lights Promise " you're guaranteed an aurora sighting or you'll get a free voyage the following season! (T&Cs apply).

A stunning view showing the sea, mountains and a clear blue sky above.

The explorer lounge, with floor-to-ceiling windows, is the perfect spot to sit back, relax and watch the world go by.

While out on deck you can enjoy a long soak in one of two jacuzzis, watching towering mountains drift by under the star-studded sky. Getting in is the easy part… getting out while the brisk arctic wind roars is a whole other story.

Warm clothing is a must during this voyage. We encountered a wide variety of temperatures going from around 30 degrees Fahrenheit (-1 degree Celsius) to as low as 7 degrees Fahrenheit (-14 degrees C) — not including the wind chill which reached a low of -11 degrees Fahrenheit (-24 degrees C) during our visit to Kirkenes.

But as the Norwegians like to say, "There's no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothes." So, preparation is key! My advice? When you think you have enough layers on, just put on one more to be safe. After all, you can always take it off!

A woman is standing in the center of the image with a snowy mountain underfoot and the sea in the distance.

Kerss kept our group entertained with fascinating astronomy lectures throughout the voyage. His talks spanned a wide range of space topics from explaining the science behind auroras and how to make space weather predictions to debunking common moon misconceptions and taking us on a fact-filled tour of the universe with excerpts from his new book " Diamonds Everywhere " (Collins, Oct. 2023). Our evenings were spent stargazing on deck with the occasional retreat inside to grab a hot drink and warm up before facing the bracing arctic conditions once again.

The onboard food, provided by Norway's Coastal Kitchen was exquisite. Supporting 50 local farms, bakeries and producers from across Norway, guests not only get to see the Norwegian coast but taste it too. From melt-in-your-mouth cod from Vesterålen, award-winning cheeses from Lofoten, and quality craft beer from Bergen, you won't be left going hungry! Dietary requirements were also very well catered for ensuring everyone could experience authentic local cuisines.

We enjoyed our three daily meals in the main restaurant Torget with buffet-style breakfasts and lunches and three-course meals for dinner. There is also an à la carte fine-dining restaurant "Kysten," all-day dining in the bistro "Brygga" and delicious ice cream available from the bakery Multe.

About 80% of our astronomy group had never seen the northern lights before, so the pressure was on.

As we shuffled out onto the ship's deck, dutifully bundled up in thermals, down jackets and windproofs, the atmosphere was palpable. It was only day 2 of the voyage and we had yet to cross the Arctic Circle — so, while hopes were high, we realistically weren't expecting to see anything but a sky full of stars that night.

But to our surprise and delight, something began to stir in the distant northern sky. Lo and behold, the northern lights decided to greet us with our first beautiful, albeit rather subtle, auroral arc display.

The activity waxed and waned. Moments of rather strong action with tall columns reaching high up into the sky would fade to a faint milky green haze barely visible to the naked eye.

But this was only the beginning.

As the long polar nights rolled on by, we were treated to an almost daily cascade of active auroral displays, each more spectacular than the last. By day 5, we'd already been treated to several dazzling aurora shows — and we were hungry for more.

Then, on day 8, after a wonderful morning hike up Mount Salen in Hammerfest, we were treated to something truly breathtaking. We'd been notified by Kerss that solar activity looked promising that evening. An early dinner ensured we were all suitably fueled and ready for a night of skywatching.

Then, at around 7 p.m. local time, the sky burst into a rich tapestry of rippling green light. It was undoubtedly the best northern lights display of the entire trip. Unsure of which way to look, everyone stood in awe of the otherworldly show before us. The entire sky was full of an ethereal light, dancing to the whims of Earth's magnetic field .

It was also lovely to see the reactions of those who had never experienced anything like this before, watching the display through their eyes and hearing their bursts of excitement and pure joy. It was a truly remarkable experience.

Unlike the majority of the group, I had seen the northern lights before, albeit just once, while on a trip to Kiruna, Sweden. But the excitement and wonder I felt was just as strong whether it was my first aurora encounter or eighth! Every northern lights show is different, so, in a way, each time feels like the first time. That unique aurora magic never goes away.

hurtigruten astronomy voyage group

Experiencing the northern lights with Hurtigruten's Astronomy Voyage was extraordinary. But what made it even more memorable was the people I got to experience it with.

The collective excitement and awe that exploded from the astronomy group when we first glimpsed the mesmerizing light flickering in the distance was a feeling I'll never forget.

The entire trip was unforgettable and, though the northern lights were spectacular, it was my fellow voyagers who cemented it as one of the best adventures I've ever had. These sentiments of collective enjoyment and camaraderie were shared by the astronomy group. But don't just take my word for it.

"We are deeply appreciative, and humbled by the depth of knowledge Tom and Eva have shared. We are in our late 70's but we realize one should never stop learning. Much of the material has been new to us, but we are excited to continue to learn more (and to buy Tom's books)" Dennis Wilson (70s), Anacortes, Washington, U.S.

Three people smiling with the northern lights in the sky behind.

"It has been Margaret's (mine too but more Margaret's) long dream of seeing the Northern Lights. We made a voyage to the extreme northern part of Canada in 2018 — no sight of the aurora. We spent a week in Iceland in 2020 — still no sighting. We thought we'd give it one more try in Norway and voila we saw the wonderful sights! Of course, the highlight was to realize our dream of seeing the aurora but also to be a part of a group of like-minded enthusiasts. The lectures with a noted astronomer were a bonus that really enhanced the experience. The amity and camaraderie with new friends added immeasurably to a great time." Alex and Margaret Marr (80s), Ferndale, Washington State, U.S.

"Tom was amazing. I'd travel to the ends of the Earth with him. Oh, I already have. Well, I'd do it again. He made a complex subject understandable, enjoyable and wanting one to dig deeper to understand more." Jim Steinberg, Colorado, U.S.

"Everything about this trip was full of magic and destiny. To date, it is one of the best trips of my life. Having had the opportunity to see the northern lights is a unique and invaluable experience. It made me cry. And I think it made the experience even more magical to have shared it with wonderful people who were enthusiastic about the sky, the stars and especially the northern lights." Cindy Vieyra Alvarez (30s), México City, México.

"We were excited to see the northern lights and we were not disappointed with them showing on the first night. From then on it, got better and better, and when in their fullest it was nothing short of a spiritual experience that we were both overjoyed and amazed by. We got to know the group over the trip and found real friendships in them. I am 53 and Dave is 50 next year but loved the mix of ages." Nicki and Dave Small (50s), Scotland.

"When I booked this trip, I didn't know what to expect except that I wanted to experience the northern lights. Eva and Tom provided the perfect combination between education and entertainment. I loved being part of a group of people sharing the same awe for this magical phenomenon. When I finally stood under a lit-up sky where aurora was dancing in front of my eyes, there wasn't anything I could say or do… I was just mesmerised and, well, emotional! I turned to one of the friends I made during the voyage and hugged them. The feeling was beyond what I had imagined. I will remember and cherish forever that moment, and hope I can experience it again." Caroline Clep, Brisbane, Australia.

Two women wearing long coats and smiling with the northern lights behind.

"To see the northern lights has been a dream of ours for a long time and this trip offered us a chance to see them. It exceeded our expectations. The highlight for us was being part of a wonderful group of like-minded individuals who we could share the thrill of seeing them with, led by Tom and Eva. I [Tricia] was emotional as it was overwhelming, did not expect the intense northern lights display we had, it was just amazing." Tricia & Peter Keverne (60s), Lancashire, U.K.

"Everyone in the astronomy group made this voyage even better because at the beginning we were just a bunch of strangers with the same dream: to see the northern lights. But every night we became closer as we bonded in the cold just waiting to see if we could spot the northern lights. On the second day, they appeared. At first, they were a dim light and fairly small, but my feelings were huge. For me, that day, I fulfilled my dream of seeing the northern lights. On the eighth day of the cruise, the sky exploded and we got to see the biggest and brightest lights. At that moment the bonding also exploded because for me it was such an honor to share this experience with people who still have dreams and goals, and one of these dreams was happening right in front of us." Mario Nahum Quiroz Salazar (30s), Ciudad de México, México.

Though our evenings were spent transfixed on the skies above, during the day we were spoiled with choices for additional activities and adventures. This included opportunities from snowmobile safaris to dog sledding rides and cultural tours to invigorating hikes. The only problem was there were simply too many to choose from!

Our astronomy group also enjoyed a private trip to Norway's largest planetarium in Tromsø. We watched two planetarium shows, one about the Sami and Viking constellations and the other describing the science behind the northern lights with wonderful footage captured by Tromsø-based photographer Ole C. Salomonsen . Afterward, we were given free rein at the Science Centre which had a wealth of interactive exhibits to keep us busy.

Optional excursions could be booked either prior to travel or directly onboard with the help of an incredibly friendly excursion team who kept us thoroughly entertained throughout the voyage with interesting lectures, on-deck introductions to points of interest and special ceremonies when we crossed the Arctic Circle.

My personal favorite was the horseback riding trip in Lofoten. Walking along a snow-covered beach, hearing the crashing waves and the crunch of snow under hooves. Looking up to see delightful northern lights above and Geminid meteors streaking across the star-studded sky. I don't know how I'll ever be able to top that night.

There is no doubt in my mind that this voyage was one of the most incredible experiences of my life. The northern lights, the friendships and the stunning scenery made for a truly unforgettable experience.

If you're looking for a trip of a lifetime, look no further.

A sunset over a body of water

A quick guide to Arctic astronomy

When you take a cruise in or near the arctic circle, you get a front-row seat to some of the sky's most exciting sights..

In the summer, visitors have the chance to see the Midnight Sun . This fascinating phenomena makes you acutely aware of the planet's movement. Apart from this period of constant sunshine, the Arctic Circle is the perfect place to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights . There are few experiences quite like that of seeing these bands of colourful light move across the sky.

When it comes to arctic stargazing, winter is the best time of year. According to the European Southern Observatory , weather conditions in the arctic are stable during winter. This, along with the area's constant or near-constant darkness, makes for clear skies and the perfect opportunity to take in the majesty of the night sky. Here's a quick guide to the constellations you can see in the Arctic Circle.

Circumpolar Constellations

Some stars and constellations are visible all year. These are called "circumpolar" constellations, which means their position relative to the earth remains fairly unchanged year round. Probably the most famous circumpolar constellation is Ursa Minor.

The brightest star in this group is Polaris, also known as the North Star. This star is located almost exactly above the North Pole, and for centuries people have been using it to navigate. Other constellations you can see whenever it's dark include Draco, Cassiopeia, and Cepheus. You should be able to spot these constellations whenever you look north.

Seasonal Constellations

Other constellations can only be seen during certain times of year. Although winter is the best season for stargazing in the Arctic, you can still catch gorgeous views of the sky in spring, fall and even parts of summer. Here's an overview of some of these seasonal sights:

During spring, you can look straight up to see Cancer, the crab. As is the case with many constellations, you might need to use your imagination for this one - Cancer is made up of five stars that roughly make a "Y" shape. If you look south, you can find Hydra. This constellation snakes (pun intended) across the sky, and can most easily be found by looking for the stars that make up its head.

Most of the Arctic summer is spent in daylight, but there is some darkness for stargazing at the beginning and end of the season. During this time, you can catch a glimpse of Hercules and Lyra, both of which are located in the eastern part of the sky. You can find Hercules by searching for four stars that make a trapezoid, then connecting the dots to find the hero's arms and legs. Lyra is easy to spot once you've found Hercules - this constellation is just below Hercules's knee.

The Arctic Circle offers unique conditions that give you a chance to see the night sky in all its glory. Once you've spotted some of these constellations, tap into the spirit of constellation making and come up with some of your own. Fall brings Pegasus and Andromeda into the eastern sky. Find Pegasus by spotting the "Great Square," a roughly even square of stars in the sky. This square actually points to Andromeda -  Earthsky.org  recommends imagining that it's a baseball diamond, and looking at what would be third base. If you drew a line directly through that angle, you'd have a line that leads straight to the Andromeda Galaxy.

Since winter has such great stargazing conditions, it should be no problem at all to spot these cold-weather constellations. Orion is a particularly fun constellation to find, as it's fairly easy to see the shape of the constellation's subject. Start by looking toward the east and finding the three stars that make up the constellation's "belt." Once you've found the belt, you should be able to spot the other stars that make up Orion's torso and limbs. Follow along his left arm to find the bow and arrow. If you focus on his right arm instead, and then look just next to it, you'll see the bottom edge of Gemini. The twins are fairly easy to fill in, since the two lines are - as you'd imagine - pretty symmetrical.

The Arctic Circle offers unique conditions that give you a chance to see the night sky in all its glory. Once you've spotted some of these constellations, tap into the spirit of constellation making and come up with some of your own.

Renowned astronomer Tom Kerss will join selected Expedition and Coastal Express sailings from October

Knowledge on the Northern Lights, the Arctic sky and the solar system will be shared on Hurtigruten sailings this autumn by a renowned astronomer.

Tom Kerss will join selected Hurtigruten Expedition and Coastal Express sailings from October 2022.

A veteran of the Royal Observatory, speaker and writer, he has set up Stargazing London to deliver training and spark interest astronomy.

Kerss will embark on his first voyage to Norway on board MS Maud from Dover on 20 October 2022.

Hurtigruten adds tv astronomer to expedition team.

Sasha Wood

Astronomer Tom Kerss will share his insights and expertise on the northern lights and the night sky with Hurtigruten guests onboard sailings from October.

eCard

A veteran of the Royal Observatory, Kerss has appeared on national TV, written several books on astronomy and set up the Stargazing London initiative to deliver training and spark a passion for astronomy.

Kerss will embark on his first voyage to Norway onboard Maud with Hurtigruten from Dover on 20 October 2022, where he will share his knowledge on the northern lights, Arctic sky and the solar system with guests.

From delivering lectures, to inviting guests to the observation deck to witness the sky above, Kerss will also lead excursions such as Hurtigruten’s exclusive visit to the planetarium at the Science Centre in Tromso.

The 15-day astronomy and northern lights expedition cruise from Dover will also depart on 19 January 2023, 11 November 2023, 20 January 2024 and 17 February 2024.

As part of the onboard scientific team, Kerss will also join Hurtiguten’s 12-day Costal Express astronomy voyages in search of the northern lights onboard Richard With and Kong Harald, departing 12 February 2023, 6 December 2023 and 2 February 2024.

Hurtigruten’s existing expedition team includes astronomers Ian Ridpath, John Mason and Sadie Jones, as well as scientists with expertise in nature, wildlife and history.

Anthony Daniels, Hurtigruten’s UK general manager, said: “We are delighted Tom will be joining our upcoming season of astronomy voyages and helping our guests truly immerse themselves in the incredible night skies of Norway.

“We are always seeking new talent to expand and increase our onboard expertise, and Tom is a fantastic addition to our expedition team.”
