Small Group Sicily Food & Wine Tour (Maximum 8 Guests) Tour

Small Group Sicily Food & Wine Tour (Maximum 8 Guests)

From the time we lasted until we were dropped off, the whole tour was beyond excellent. The food and wine tours were varied from small plates at different restaurants to large meals at scenic settings. We ate at a seaport and at a farm house (the setting was far from rustic), in markets, and wineries. We had a cooking class where we prepared a traditional Sicilian meal. We stayed in wonderful hotels and had terrific tour guides. The tours were fabulous but they were short enough to allow for sometime to explore on our own. I would highly recommend this well managed and well planned tour.

Best of Sicily - 8 Days (Small Group Tour) Tour

Best of Sicily - 8 Days (Small Group Tour)

The tour was truly a taste to Sicily. The tour guides were knowledgeable and thorough from Taormina to Palermo. The hotels and the choice of meals were very good especially the wine tasting at Etna having the most inventive cuisine.

Italy Family Holiday Tour

Italy Family Holiday

I took my 12 year old son on the Intrepid Family Adventure. We had an amazing time. The guide was helpful, considerate and lots of fun. Playing games with the kids in the pool and making sure everyone was comfortable and happy. The pace was fantastic for a family with the mornings full of exploring with the group and the afternoons reserved for free time for families to spend together. Our highlight was the sailing trip to Capri. Can't recommend highly enough

Lakes & Lagoon: Como, Lake Garda & Venice, 6 days private tour

Usually we participate in group tours because they are cheaper, this time we let ourselves be persuaded to buy a private tour for 6 people. The itinerary was beautiful, the service we received was excellent. We must thank Filippo our driver who was always at our disposal. The guide (only for us) was very nice and with an excellent knowledge of the area. Recommended tour and we recommend not to exceed 6 people

Best of Italy (Classic, Summer, 11 Days) Tour

Best of Italy (Classic, Summer, 11 Days)

The first hotel in Rome Romanico Palace Hotel was a dump, dirty and dingy. When arriving in Rome after a long plane ride, I would have expected a nicer hotel for the money we paid. Also, we paid a premium for a small group (20 people) but ended up with the larger group (60 people) on several occasions such as breakfast in two hotels that was chaos BTW and some tours. When we pay extra to be in a smaller group, I expect that this would be honoured by Insight. We were disappointed and didn’t get what we paid for.

Sicilian Secrets Tour

Sicilian Secrets

The trip was well organized. The guide - Placido certainly knew his subjects and was very happy to answer questions. The accomodation was all very good as were the breakfasts. .The group was large and I didn't realise that when I booked. Also you did need to be fit ( I am) but some people found the wakking/steps very difficult

Enchanting Italy With Luxury Stay & Business Class Train Rides

What people love about luxury tours in italy.

This tour was the very best experience we have ever had traveling overseas. The booking process was seamless and painless. We felt especially grateful that while the group was limited to 8 participants, it was guaranteed to proceed with 2 people. As it ended up, our trip was just me and my husband and we felt so fortunate to have had the attention of the guides in such a personal way. The guides were all tremendous and I am confident that a larger group would have felt equally tended to. Special thanks to our guides and drivers: Denise, Orazio, Roberto, Carlos, Fabio and Massimo. Part of what was truly evident was how passionate they each were about Sicily and how many of them had connections with people at the restaurants, local businesses and attractions that we went to. We felt like we were in such good hands during the time we were with all of the guides. Each tour and activity was enlightening and educational. The included lunches and other meals were top notch. The opening night walking food and wine tour was a great way to kickoff the trip. There were some others who joined us for that portion, and it was most welcome. I don't think it would have been as much fun for the restaurants and enoteca to have just 2 people and the guide show up, and we knew the rest of the trip we would have individual attention. We felt pampered with our lunches on the Mafia tour, at the winery on Etna, in Marzememi and Agrigento. There was never a feeling of penny-pinching, more plush and like what we would have chosen for ourselves! The selected hotels were excellent! Centrally located, each with a fantastic breakfast spread and fun bar/restaurants. We would happily go back to any of them again and recommend them. We loved the scheduling each day and felt like we had a great mix of free time to explore on our own. Lastly, Graziana was out lifeline while we were traveling. She connected with us daily to check in, and to share the next days plan and name of our guide and where they would meet us. She made dinner reservations for us while we were there and provided recommendations that were helpful. We didn't encounter any issues, but felt that we had a ready ally if needed. Massimo also checked in midtrip, so we truly felt like everyone was interested in us having the best possible trip. I cannot wait to return to Sicily. We have recommended Sicily Activities to many people since our return and would book again in a heartbeat.
I can’t say enough good things about our experience in Sicily thanks to Mossimo and his team. Excellent, informative tour guides…Denise, Carlos, Antonio and Sem. The cooking class may have been the highlight, but all of the activities were fun and the pace of the tour, planned activities/free time mix was perfect. Will definitely recommend!
Lovely tour. Great guides, nice hotels, perfect itunerary.

What are the best southern Italy tours?

Our best escorted tours to southern Italy include—

  • Amalfi & Capri : Naples, Pompei, Capri, Positano
  • Puglia : Matera, Lecce, Alberobello, Brindisi
  • Sicily : Palermo, Agrigento, Siracusa, Taormina, Canania
  • Sardinia : Alghero, Oilena

What are the best northern Italy tours?

Our best escorted tours to northern Italy include:

  • Italian Lakes : Bellagio, Stresa, Milan

These tours combine northern Italy and central Italy:

  • Venice, Florence & Rome
  • Tuscany & The Cinque Terre

What are the best central Italy tours?

What is the best time to travel to italy.

The best time of year to go to Italy depends on what you prefer from your vacation:

  • Visit in the summer (between July and September) for the warmest weather.
  • Visit in spring (April – June), or fall (late September – October) for milder weather and less crowds.
  • Visit in winter (November – February) for Christmas markets and quiet cities.

How many days do I need to see Italy?

It can take a lifetime to explore all of Italy, but we recommend a minimum of 7 days to see the best of one of Italy’s regions. To visit multiple regions all over Italy, consider a 2 or 3 week tour. Our itineraries can be booked back-to-back, or we can create a private tour around the amount of time you have, and the places you wish to see.

What should I pack for Italy?

  • We suggest clothes that can be worn in layers
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • A cardigan or light jacket for the evenings
  • Sunglasses and sunscreen
  • These are just a few helpful suggestions, but we are happy to provide a full recommended packing list in your booking confirmation.

I want to experience an authentic Italian tradition, can I plan my trip around this?

Absolutely, we love the different Italian traditions (read our blog on them here) and can arrange a trip to suit the location and dates of whichever tradition in Italy you want to experience!

We had a wonderful time on our Italian vacation. Everything was so well planned, we didn’t have to do anything, it was fabulous. The hotels we stayed at were very nice. The meals that were included were delicious. Really enjoyed our tour director Matia, she was so much fun and really taught us a lot of history. We will definitely use Perillo again. Thanks for everything!

My wife and I just returned from our North Continental 14 Day tour of Italy and wanted to let you know it was fabulous. We cannot think of a better way to see so much great art and history and culture in such a short time. Thanks again for offering such a great tour.

Day 1 – by rail to switzerland.

You begin your ‘Grand Tour’ as you enter the spectacularly restored St Pancras International station.

Stroll beneath the station’s wondrous arched-glass roof before you relax in your Standard Premier Class seat on board the Eurostar on your journey through to Paris.

As you arrive into the Gare du Nord you are greeted by your private taxi driver at the platform end, who will transfer you through Paris to the Gare de Lyon. Here you board your comfortable TGV service for the onward journey through the changing French and Swiss countryside and past quaint rural towns and villages before you arrive into the attractive lakeside city of Zurich.

Here you spend tonight at the highly-rated Hotel Helmhaus (4 star), ideally situated close to the city’s main attractions.

first class tours of italy

Day 2 - Through Switzerland to Milan and onwards to Venice

This morning you have the opportunity to take a tour of Zurich and its main sights, which are clustered along the banks of the River Limmat.

You might like to start at Zurich’s main station (Hauptbahnhof), journey down through the historic centre, towards Lake Zurich.

Sights of interest include the Old Town, with its burgher houses and churches and the baroque Rathaus (Town Hall).

Perhaps the most iconic landmarks in Zurich are the four main churches, the Grossmünster, Fraumünster, the city’s oldest, St Peterskirche and St. Peter – which boasts the largest clock face in Europe.

As you return to Zurich station, prepare yourselves for the scenic journey along the impressive Gotthard route through the Swiss Alps. The line transports you through picturesque scenery, climbing to the foot of the snow-capped Alps and through the Gotthard Base Tunnel, the world’s longest tunnel and a marvellous feat of engineering.

You soon emerge and continue across the Swiss border and through the outstanding Italian Lakes before arriving in Milan. You change trains at Milan’s majestic art-deco station where you join the comfortable Eurostar Italia Frecciabianca service for the onward journey to Venice.

Savour the moment as you exit Venezia Santa Lucia station and you enter the strange timelessness and other-worldly quality of Venice. Here you travel in ultimate style along the Grand Canal and through the Venetian backwaters in your private water taxi to your hotel for the next three nights, the Hotel Ai Mori d’Oriente (4 star), well-located just a short walk from the Rialto Bridge, with its beautiful design and welcoming atmosphere.

Days 3 and 4 – Venice

Channel street, Venice Orient Express

Day 5 – Venice to Florence

Savour your final morning in Venice before making the journey back to Venezia Santa Lucia station by private water taxi for your First Class journey south on board the Eurostar Italia Frecciargento service to Florence.

On arrival at Firenze Santa Maria Novella station stroll to the stylish Glance Hotel (4-star), your hotel for the next three nights, ideally located close to the station.

Days 6 and 7 – Florence

Florence, the epicentre of the Italian Renaissance, houses some of the greatest masterpieces ever created. The best way to explore this diverse and compelling city is on foot. You might like to start at the celebrated Duomo (Santa Maria del Fiore), a triumph of architecture and engineering before visits to the world renowned Uffizi Gallery and the iconic Medieval closed-spandrel segmented arched bridge, the Ponte Vecchio.

Enjoy traditional Florentine and Tuscan culinary delights or take a trip through Tuscany’s rolling hills, one of Italy’s most romanticised regions. From Siena’s UNESCO world heritage medieval centre to Pisa’s famous leaning tower and Lucca’s Renaissance-era city walls it is good to know that these fascinating attractions are easily accessible by train.

first class tours of italy

Day 8 – Florence to Rome

Take your leave of Florence as you depart from Firenze Santa Maria Novella station and join the Eurostar Italia service to the eternal city of Rome. Relax in your comfortable first class seat as the landscape of central Italy unfurls before you. As you arrive into Roma Termini station make your way to the comfortable and highly-rated Liberty Boutique Hotel (4 star), your hotel for the next three nights.

Days 9 and 10 – Rome

The Eternal City of Rome encompasses architectural wonders from classical ruins, Renaissance palazzi and Baroque fountains with a modern touch of quirky shops on the Via del Corso, lively bars and rustic trattorias. A trip to Rome would not be complete without a visit to the city’s celebrated sights from the Trevi Fountain to the Spanish steps, the Vatican City to the Colosseum.

Take time to marvel at the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo’s painted ceiling – a masterpiece of High Renaissance art, which will provide lasting memories, as will the view from the top of St. Peters Cathedral across Rome’s seven hills cityscape.

Optional excursion – “Vatican Tour and the Papal Train to Castel Gandolfo” (only available on Saturdays – from £45 per person)

You have the opportunity to experience the brand new “Vatican Tour and the Papal Train to Castel Gandolfo”, which is the first time the Vatican train station has offered a regularly scheduled passenger train.

This unique sightseeing and train tour begins with a visit to the Vatican, where you are given priority entrance to the Vatican Gardens and Vatican Museums, including the incredible Sistine Chapel. From here you make your way to the white-marbled railway station and travel along the 984ft Vatican railway line – the shortest in the world – into Rome.  You then cross the Tiber and travel through 20 miles of Italian countryside and onto Albano Laziale in the Alban hills. Here you are transferred by shuttlebus to the sumptuous Pontifical Villas in Castel Gandolfo, which have traditionally served as the Papal Summer Residence, before returning back to Rome this evening.

Please Note: Alternatively, you have the option to tour the Vatican Gardens and Vatican Museums at the end of your tour.

first class tours of italy

Day 11 – Rome to Lake Geneva

This morning after breakfast bid farewell to the Rome as you join your first class service aboard the Eurostar Italia Frecciarossa train for the journey north to Milan. Relax and admire the changing scenery as you cross the Apennine Mountains before you change trains in Milan for the Euro City service across the Simplon Pass for the spectacular journey through the Swiss Alps, on to sparkling Lake Geneva and the idyllic lakeside town of Montreux. Your hotel for the night is the belle époque Grand Hotel Suisse Majestic (4 star superior) located directly across from the station.

Make the most of your stay by taking a lakeside stroll this evening, enjoy the refreshing breeze and stunning scenery as the sun begins to set.

Day 12 - Montreux to London

You awake this morning in a truly spectacular setting surrounded by vineyards, nestled beneath a backdrop of the magnificent Alps. You may have time to further explore the attractive Old Town, with its fresh panoramic views around almost every turn. Alternatively take a charming stroll along the flower bedecked promenade to the historic Château de Chillon (payable locally). Discover the castle’s vast history and admire the 14th century wall paintings, subterranean vaults and parade halls, all the while you gaze in awe at the looming mountains from the rocky banks of Lake Geneva.

Then make your way back to Montreux station for your onward journey by the Inter Regio service to Lausanne where you change trains for the super-fast TGV journey back to Paris. Take this opportunity to relax as you reminisce on some of the highlights of you ‘Grand Tour’ before your train arrives at the Gare de Lyon. Your private taxi transfer whisks you back across Paris to the Gare du Nord for the final stage of your journey by Eurostar to London. Enjoy your at seat meal and drink service in Standard Premier Class as the Eurostar service reaches speeds of nearly 200 mph, before you arrive back into London St. Pancras and the final stage of your homeward journey.

Tonight, the group will come together for one final dinner at the hotel.

Travel tips for Italy tours

One of the best parts about Italy is the diversity within its borders—from the rugged, Alpine beauty of Northern Italy to the laid-back countryside of Tuscany and Umbria, to the cultural capitals of Rome and Florence, to the colorful beaches of the Italian Riviera and the Mediterranean Coast. It’s hard to choose where to go, but, luckily, many of our Italy tour packages cover a few different distinct areas, like Venice, Florence, and Rome, or Florence, Tuscany, and the Italian Riviera.

Our guided tours of Italy span the spectrum, and sometimes it’s best to start with your interests.

  • Rome, Florence, or Venice:  If it’s your first time in Italy, you may want to begin with the iconic cities of Rome, Florence, and Venice, where you’ll walk through the Colosseum and other historic sites of the Roman Empire, soak in the art and architecture of the birthplace of the Renaissance, and navigate Venice’s beautiful network of canals.
  • Tuscany, Umbria, Northern Italy, or the Italian Riviera. If you’re a foodie, our culinary-themed Italy vacation packages, such as our small-group  Food & Wine: Flavors of Tuscany & Umbria and Food & Wine: Northern Italy & the Italian Riviera  tours, are perfect for you.
  • Rome or Pompeii. If you’re a history buff, Italy tours that include Rome or Pompeii are the best place to start.
  • Cinque Terre or Amalfi Coast. For those who are all about sunshine and nature, you’ll love itineraries that include Cinque Terre and the Amalfi Coast.
  • Florence, Milan, Siena, Alberobello, or Venice . Art lovers should consider a trip that includes Florence (for the Renaissance masterpieces), Milan and Siena (for their showstopping cathedrals), and Alberobello and Venice (for Alberobello’s traditional stone huts and Venice’s blown glass).

While summer is often the most common time to visit, it’s also the hottest and most crowded, so we recommend taking one of our guided trips to Italy in the off-season. Spring and fall offer the most pleasant temperatures for sightseeing. You’ll also enjoy smaller crowds, great prices, and seasonal extras, like spring flowers and fall festivals.

Rural areas in Italy’s beloved wine country are particularly beautiful in the fall, when the year’s harvest occurs, usually in October and November. On one of our escorted tours of Italy during this time, you’ll find some of the country’s most flavorful produce, like truffles, chestnuts, grapes, mushrooms, and eggplant. It’s a wonderful time to shop local markets, visit vineyards, and get a feel for daily life during this flavorful season.

If you’re looking to visit Rome or other parts of Southern Italy, winter is also a great time to plan a trip, when the crowds are much smaller at the main attractions like the Colosseum and the Vatican, and the temperatures are cool yet still comfortable for exploring. If this sounds right for you, check out our  Rome: The City Experience  or  Sicily: A Cultural Journey  tours.

In a country bursting with must-see attractions, it would be easier to ask, “Where not to go?” But here’s a short list of the most compelling places to visit in Italy:

  • The Colosseum. This marvel of ancient Roman engineering is over 1,900 years old, and a visit inside its 157-foot walls is like flipping back the pages of history.
  • The Pantheon. Remarkable for its size and design, the Pantheon has survived in its original form and is the best-preserved ancient Roman monument.
  • The Duomo. This legendary Florence cathedral was the world’s largest when it opened in 1436. The Duomo is famous for its Renaissance masterworks and its massive octagonal dome.
  • The Roman Forum. Once the setting of parades, elections, and trials, the ruins of the Forum give a glimpse of everyday life in ancient Rome.
  • The Leaning Tower of Pisa. Even though its famous lean began during its construction, this medieval bell tower was considered an engineering marvel of its time.
  • St. Mark’s Basilica. One of the world’s most iconic travel destinations, St. Mark’s Basilica was Venice’s religious heart centuries ago. A visit to the basilica and the square it’s located in is an absolute must.
  • Vatican City. Steeped in tradition, history, and even a bit of mystery, Vatican City—the seat of the Catholic Church—is the most-visited spot in Rome. The tiny city-state is home to the breathtaking St. Peter’s Basilica, world-renowned museums, manicured gardens, and the Sistine Chapel.
  • Pompeii. Experience history preserved. The Roman city of Pompeii was famously covered in ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D. The deep layer of ash preserved structures and objects frozen in time.

In a country with a rich history and culture, there are many popular activities to experience on our trips to Italy. Some of the most popular activities include:

  • Visiting historical sites. Italy is home to countless historical sites, such as the Colosseum in Rome, the Leaning Tower of Pisa, and the ancient city of Pompeii.
  • Exploring the countryside. Italy’s beautiful countryside, with rolling hills, vineyards, and olive groves, makes it a pleasure to discover.
  • Enjoying the food. Famous for its delicious dishes, Italy will please your palate from Piedmont to Sicily. Wine and food-tasting excursions on our trips allow you to sample the best of Italian food and wine. Check out our food lover’s guide to Italy for six of the top culinary moments to experience in Italy.
  • Visiting museums and galleries. You don’t need to be a history buff or art lover to enjoy the magnificent art and rich history that Italy is steeped in. From the papal treasures of the Vatican Museums to the masterworks of the Uffizi Gallery, Italy is home to some of the world’s most incredible art and historical collections. Check out our Art Lover’s Guide to Italy and our History Lover’s Guide to Italy .
  • Shopping. Italy is also a shopper’s paradise, with everything from designer clothes to handmade souvenirs. If you love luxury brands, specialty boutiques, or great deals from street vendors, you’ll find it all on our tours to Italy.
  • Enjoying outdoor activities. No need to spend all your time sightseeing. Outdoor activities, like hiking, cycling, and skiing, are also popular, depending on the season.
  • Relaxing on the beach. Italy has long coastlines with beautiful beaches to relax on.

With its millennia-spanning history, mouthwatering regional cuisine, and countless artistic treasures, it’s no wonder Italy consistently ranks at the top of travelers’ wish lists. The country offers so much ancient history and delicious food and is home to countless artistic treasures. Italy offers experiences you can’t have anywhere else. Some activities you can experience on our Italy tours include:

  • Taking a gondola ride in Venice
  • Visiting Vatican City in Rome
  • Watching the sunset from Piazzale Michelangelo in Florence
  • Exploring the colorful villages of Cinque Terre
  • Eating homemade pasta in the tiny village of Noto
  • Taking a cooking class to learn how to make traditional Italian dishes
  • Staying overnight at an Italian agriturismo
  • Hunting for truffles

We recommend you spend at least six days in Italy. While our most popular Italy tours run nine days or more, you can enjoy a shorter trip if you limit your tour to one or two cities in the same region.

Yes. We visit many of Italy’s most famous wine regions, including Tuscany, Umbria, Campania, Puglia, Sicily, and Piedmont.

Italy has a Mediterranean climate, with mild winters and hot summers. However, the weather can vary greatly depending on the region and time of year, so checking the forecast before traveling on any of our Italy tour packages is essential.

Pull up a seat at any table in Italy and you’re guaranteed to be greeted by the same thing: a dish made with equal parts local ingredients and love. In Italy, a homemade meal is synonymous with a warm welcome, and time-honored cooking traditions allow seasonal flavors to shine.

In general, as you travel from north to south, the cuisine and flavors get lighter. In Northern Italy, where there are more pastures and livestock, you’ll find flavorful meats, rich pastas, and bold wines. In Southern Italy, you’ll feel the influence of the Mediterranean in dishes that feature lots of fish, vegetables, citrus, and olives.

Here are some of the best Italian dishes:

  • Pizza . Naples, the place to get a classic pie, serves up a pure and simple version with just tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, fresh basil, and olive oil.
  • Seafood . Liguria, a region better known as the Italian Riviera, is known for all kinds of fresh-from-the-sea specialties, particularly anchovies, mussels, and a mixed seafood stew called ciuppin.
  • Pesto . Another favorite from the Italian Riviera, this vibrant sauce is often served on pasta alongside seafood or fresh veggies, like zucchini.
  • Tagliatelle Bolognese . Bologna, where recipes have been passed down from generation to generation, is the birthplace of this all-time favorite dish. It features wide noodles topped with a sauce of ground meat.
  • Olive oil. When it comes to the places where you’ll find the best olive oil, it’s a toss-up between Tuscany, where you’ll find delicious peppery olive oil, and Puglia, the country’s olive oil capital.
  • Arancini . Sicily is the home of these fried rice-and-cheese balls, but you can find them throughout most of Southern Italy, filled with a variety of delicious stuffings.

Italian is the most widely spoken language in Italy. However, English is widely used in popular areas. That said, knowing some key phrases is always useful. It will help you find your way around and show locals that you’re interested in learning about their culture.

Here are some key Italian phrases to know before you go →

  • Punctuality . Italians value punctuality, so arriving on time for appointments and meetings is important.
  • Greeting people. Greeting people with a handshake or kiss on the cheek is customary.
  • Dining out. Eating in Italy is an art form. It’s considered rude to ask for substitutions or not to finish your meal. And when it comes to spaghetti, roll it on a fork. Don’t eat spaghetti with a spoon or use a knife to cut it.  And don’t order an espresso with your meal. Save the coffee until after you’re finished eating.
  • Remove your hat . It’s a well-established tradition in Italy to remove your hat when you enter a church. The same goes for entering restaurants and cafes.
  • Leave your shorts in your suitcase.  Few Italians wear shorts in the city. Dressing well is important, especially in the cities.

Read more about how to experience Italy like a local →

We recommend packing light for your trip to Italy. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After you’ve booked one of our Italy tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.

  • Sun protection. For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Italy, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
  • Layers. For tours of Italy, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • Comfortable walking shoes. Since you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential to have with you. Italy is famous for its fashionable footwear, but it’s also known for its cobblestone streets and steps. So, while you may be tempted to dress as fashionably as the locals, we recommend erring on the side of comfort to save yourself from blisters.
  • Dressier attire. You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • Full-coverage layers for religious sites. It is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and staff at these sites may deny entrance on this basis.
  • A travel adapter.  A plug adapter is one of the most essential things to buy before going to Italy. Italy uses three plug types: C, F, and L. Type C plugs have two round pins, type F have two round pins with clips on the top and bottom, and type L have three round pins in a row. Most hotel rooms have a mixture of type F (used throughout Europe) and L (Italy only), but know that you can use a type F in a type C outlet and type C in a type L outlet (that’s a lot to remember, we know). As long as you have one of these power adapters, you’ll be absolutely fine.
  • A small day bag.  Many churches and museums will not allow you to bring in large backpacks for security purposes—you’ll need to check them at the door. However, you can wear a small day bag on your front, like a cross-body travel bag or stylish mini backpack.
  • An RFID money belt or wallet.  Italy’s city streets can get busy, and like in any country with many tourists, you’ll want to be wary of pickpockets. Radio-frequency identification (RFID) can protect your credit card info from electronic theft, and a money belt will conceal your cash without ruining your outfit.
  • A portable charger.  As you float along Venice’s canals, take in the Renaissance mastery of Florence, or walk along ancient streets in Rome, you’ll snap many  gorgeous photos of Italy . That means you’ll need a phone battery that can keep up. Pack a small portable charger, and you won’t have to worry!
  • A reusable water bottle.  This isn’t just one of our  eco-friendly travel essentials . It’ll also save you money. Italy’s tap water is safe to drink, and you can fill your bottle with fresh, cold water at Roman aqueducts built thousands of years ago—so it’s an authentic experience, too. Just try not to ask bar or restaurant staff to refill it for you, as this isn’t common practice in Italy.

Our happy travellers rave about Italy

Above and beyond what could have been expected.

The whole experience was absolutely top-notch. The meals, the hotels and the tour guides (both local and permanent) were remarkably informative and helpful. I should, however, reserve the highest praise for our guru & guide, Rasha Salem and Francesca. They went above and beyond what could have been expected – and we did expect a lot. Their ability to adapt to unforeseen circumstances; closed roads, rough sea and incredible crowds was superlative. The choice of venues and activities was, obviously, well thought out and our individual requests were catered to.

The itinerary and tours were outstanding

Wonderful experience! Approach all-inclusive tours are very professional making travel stress-free. They pick you up and deliver you to the airport where you are met by your trip guru who accompanied us from start to finish. We also had a local guide in Italy who was with us from start to finish. Her job was to get us from one place to the next as well as keep us informed about our day and local sites while we travelled. Expert local guides were also used at most attractions. They were really knowledgeable and made each attraction come alive. These guides made all the difference to ensure we had a superior trip. Our trip guru RASHA SALEM was outstanding. Caring, quick to address any issues, helpful and knowledgeable. She is a real gem. Hotels and especially the beds were great. Breakfast was typical European fare, all lunches were great to excellent….especially the wine tastings. Food and drink were plentiful…..always past full each evening. The itinerary and tours were outstanding. Highly recommend Approach Tours Signature Italy trip.

I would highly recommend this trip to anyone

The Signature Italy Tour was the trip of a lifetime for my partner, Pina and me. Approach Tours did an amazing job organizing every detail from picking us up at our home to ensuring we stayed at top hotels while enjoying wonderful meals each day. Our Group Guru Rasha Salem was the best. She was very caring and detail-oriented. She made sure we all had the best time ever! I would highly recommend this trip to anyone. Book yours today.

A fabulous holiday

I joined as a solo traveller and had a fabulous holiday. Our group guru Rasha and our Italian guide Franschesca helped to make the trip far beyond what I expected. From incredible sightseeing (including wineries) to amazing local lunches and lovely hotels, I can’t say enough how much I enjoyed the 16-day tour.

Extremely organized, knowledgeable and very resourceful

This was an experience of a lifetime from beginning to end. A fantastic group of people who made this trip unique and fun. Our Guru (Rasha Salem) and our Italian tour guide (Francesca Anghileri) we’re 100% dedicated and committed to the whole group 24/7.  They were extremely organized, knowledgeable and very resourceful, it was very obvious that they had done this before. We also appreciated that in some of the major cities they included “local” guides who shared all the pertinent information and history of the places we were visiting!  Amazing!  Approach advertising about literally being all-inclusive, they are not lying. We just had to get up in the morning and be on time for the bus… they took care of everything else.  Kudos to the Approach team(s) who work in the background – from the time of booking, pick up at home, travel arrangements, hotel(s) bookings, buses, events scheduling … and so much more!! THANK YOU!

Definitely will travel with Approach Tours again

Definitely will travel with Approach Tours again. Many opportunities were available as part of this group that I would not have had travelling on my own. I loved having the opportunity to experience so many various activities (wine tastings, cheese tastings, boat trips, etc.).

A tour that I will remember forever

I loved the variety of excursions, from wine festivals to small towns, to Rome and the Vatican. Roberta took us on a real tour of Italy that I will remember forever.

Amazing to see in person!

Our favourite part was the gondola ride in Venice. All the boat rides were really good … Lake Garda, Cinque Terre, Sorrento/Amalfi/Positano. Enjoyed the beautiful churches in Venice, Pisa, Rome and Florence. All stops had beautiful architecture. Lastly cannot forget Rome and the Vatican, amazing to see in person!

Very interesting commentary by the guides!

I loved Verona for its musical associations, Cinque Terra, San Giminagno, taking a gondola ride in Venice, and Pisa (I had visited it before and was pleasantly surprised to enjoy it so thoroughly). Very interesting commentary by the guides! Also greatly enjoyed the wine tasting in Vineyards.

Everything is included, including tips

I enjoyed my time in Cinque Terre. I went for a swim in my clothes! I also enjoyed the boat ride at Lake Garda. I like that everything is included, including tips. Our Guru, Caroline was very helpful and good at creating good group cohesion.

Positano, Amalfi, Capri, and Lake Garda

The fabulous local guides were the highlights. Learning t he history of the area was my favourite, but I also really enjoyed the “down days” at Positano, Amalfi, Capri, and Lake Garda. All the planning on behalf of Approach was a bonus to me, as it was the first time I had travelled “solo ”. Bravo!!

Spirit & kindness of my fellow travellers

Highlight was the variety, spirit & kindness of my fellow travellers. I particularly enjoyed several places I had never been to before and benefited  from the knowledge & humour of the local drivers & guides. I took the opportunity to explore some places on my own and rekindle my personal interests and confidence in my ability to navigate new places .

Differences Between First Class & Second Class on Italian Trains

Seats on a Trenitalia train. — creative commons photo by Conan

As if all the other choices you need to make in planning an Italy trip weren’t overwhelming enough, on some Italian trains you also get to pick whether you want to sit in first class or second class. (I know, all of this decision-making will make the next “paper or plastic” question seem so easy, won’t it?)

You’ll notice the main difference between first class and second class even before you get on a train in Italy – first class, naturally, costs more. Once on board, the differences are not as stark as they are between first class and coach on a plane, so don’t automatically assume first class is worth the extra cost.

Buy Italy Train Tickets

Get your tickets before you leave home from ItaliaRail , a US-based company that partners with Trenitalia to offer real-time connectivity to the Italian rail reservation system. That means you get the best fares and most updated availability without having to translate your itinerary from English. Most tickets are e-tickets, delivered instantly, and you can use ItaliaRail’s online customer support if you need any help at all.

Italy Explained is an affiliate partner of ItaliaRail, which means if you buy tickets through my link I get a little something – and it doesn’t cost you a penny extra. Thanks for your support.

Generally speaking, here are the differences you can expect:

First Class on Italian Trains

  • Wider aisles and seats
  • Fewer people
  • More luggage storage space
  • Free newspapers (on some trains)
  • Free snacks and beverages (on some trains)
  • Other passengers – primarily Italian business travelers, American and other Western tourists
  • Sometimes free or more reliable WiFi
  • Sometimes free entertainment (movies)
  • Cleaner and better-stocked bathrooms

Second Class on Italian Trains

  • Narrower aisles and seats
  • More people
  • Less personal space
  • Less luggage storage space
  • Snack and beverage service for a fee (on some trains)
  • Other passengers – more of a mix, including frugal Italian travelers and tourists

Things like air conditioning are typically throughout a train, and not limited to one class of car or another, and the existence of a dining car isn’t dependent on a train class, either. If there’s a dining car attached to a train, people from both classes are welcome to use it. A trend on newer trains is to have electrical outlets at each seat, which are available in both first and second class.

Keep in mind that not all trains have both first and second class – some only have second class cars.

Also note that both the AV trains and the Italo trains have taken to giving new names to first and second class, which means you may see different titles for both. On AV trains, first class has been divided into two – Executive and Business – and second class has been split as well – Premium and Standard. Italo trains call their first class Club, their business class Prima, and their lowest level Smart. Whatever the name, you’ll know which is considered “second class” because it’ll almost always be the cheapest option.

So, is first class worth the price?

Well, that depends. The biggest difference between the train classes is space, so if space is really important to you then I’d say go for it. The jump in price isn’t nearly as dramatic as the difference between first class and coach on a flight, and if it’ll make your trip more comfortable then that’s never a bad thing. Having said that, the prices on the expensive trains keep going up, so first class tickets may be outside your budget. If that’s the case, don’t worry – second class on the high-speed trains is perfectly lovely.

Personally? I opt for second class every time. It means I’ve got more money leftover for gelato.

Is the train that runs between Bari and Rome an AV train? Thanks

' src=

Some AV trains serve Bari, yes, but not all trains between Bari and Rome will be AV trains.

One of the best things to do in Italy? Spend time on the water (coast, lake or canal) © Catherine Falls Commercial / Getty Images

With its iconic monuments, timeless landscapes and irresistible food,  Italy is one of Europe’s most alluring destinations. Its historic cities promise thrilling art and architecture at every turn while its varied coastlines and Alpine heights provide a stunning outdoor playground.

In fact, the country is so packed with possibilities that it can seem almost overwhelming. Where should I go? How do I get there? How much will it cost? This planning guide tackles these questions and provides clear practical advice on how to get the most out of your first Italian trip.

Cloud swirl round craggy Peaks of the dolomites in Italy as forests run down the hillside turning from green into yellows reds and oranges in the autumnal glow with a Russian-style church, Church St. Johann in Ranui, stood at the bottom of the field

When should I go to Italy?

The short answer is anytime. Spring and fall are best for sightseeing , touring and seasonal food. It’s warm without being stifling and nature is in full color. But with the glorious blue-sky weather come crowds and high-season prices in the main cities.

Summer sees cities empty as holidaymakers head to the coast. Prices skyrocket in popular areas, peaking in mid-August when beaches are packed and resorts full. Meanwhile, the festival season swings into gear with high-profile events such as Il Palio di Siena, featuring a wild bareback horse race around Siena 's Piazza del Campo , and Spoleto’s Festival dei Due Mondi , with musicians, artists and actors performing to passionate throngs.

Winter is generally quiet – except in ski resorts – and it can be wet and cold. But low season rates and empty museums make it a decent option for a city break.

How much time do I need to visit Italy?

Realistically, you’ll need at least two or three days in top cities such as Rome , Florence and Venice . That won’t give you enough time to cover everything, but it will allow you to get a feel for the place and explore some of the headline attractions.

If you’re happy to move fast, you could cover Italy’s highlights on a whistle-stop 10-day tour. That would give you a couple of days each in Venice and Florence, a day in Bologna , Pisa and Naples , and three days in Rome. Alternatively, you could focus on a particular area. For example, with a week you could explore southern Tuscany and parts of neighboring Umbria , or cut a swathe through Sicily’s baroque southeast .

Is it easy to get in and around Italy?

Italy is well served by air with flights from across the world. Major airports include Rome Fiumicino (officially Leonardo da Vinci) and Milan Malpensa , the two main intercontinental gateways, Venice Marco Polo , Pisa International (for Florence and Tuscany), Naples International  and Catania (Sicily’s busiest airport). There are also excellent rail and bus links, especially to northern Italy, and ferries to Italian ports from across the Mediterranean.

Once in Italy, you've got transport options . Trains are best between major cities and along the coasts, while buses are better for the mountains and hilly inland areas. For more remote parts you’ll really need your own wheels. Most major cities have decent public transport, though you can often cover their historic centers on foot.

Top things to do in Italy

Tour rome’s greatest hits.

First port of call for many travelers is Rome, Italy’s charismatic capital. You’ll never be able to cover all of its monuments and masterpieces, but there are some you won’t want to miss. The Colosseum and Pantheon are obvious highlights, along with the Roman Forum and Palatino . Then there’s the Vatican where you’ll find St Peter’s Basilica and the Sistine Chapel (in the Vatican Museums ). And, of course, you’ll want to toss a coin into the Trevi Fountain to ensure you return to the Eternal City.

For a taste of authentic Roman cuisine, try a slice of pizza from Forno Roscioli or a pasta carbonara at Flavio al Velavevodetto in the Testaccio neighborhood.

Marvel at masterpieces in Florence

One and a half hours north of Rome by train, Florence is the second of Italy’s ‘big three’ (Venice completes the trio). Visitors have been rhapsodizing about the city for centuries and still today it thrills with its Renaissance palazzi (palaces), frescoed churches and artworks such as Michelangelo's David at the Galleria dell'Accademia , Botticelli’s Birth of Venus at the Galleria degli Uffizi , and Brunelleschi’s red dome atop the landmark Duomo . Art apart, there are markets and boutiques to explore and Negroni cocktails to be sampled, including at the historic Caffè Rivoire .

With more time, you could add a day-trip to Siena or a tour of the Chianti wine country .

Several gondolas offer their tourist services very early in a new day of the beautiful city of Venice as they punt beneath the Bridge of Sighs

Get lost in Venice’s backstreets

As soon as you set foot in Venice you know it’s special. And confusing. To get your bearings take vaporetto (water bus) No 1 along the Grand Canal to Piazza San Marco where you’ll find several landmark sights. Chief among these are the Basilica di San Marco and the Gothic Palazzo Ducale , former residence of the ruling Doge. Elsewhere, you can catch modern art at the world-class Peggy Guggenheim Collection and browse colorful produce at the centuries-old Rialto Market .

To fuel your wanderings, Venice is famous for its cicchetti (bar snacks). A top spot for these is the canal-side Bracaro ae Bricoe bar in the Cannaregio sestiere (neighborhood).

Feast on pizza, art and street life in Naples

With Mt Vesuvius brooding on the horizon, Naples is sprawling, loud, sometimes edgy and often magnificent. Its Dickensian backstreets are a joy to explore and its regal palaces showcase world-class collections of Greco-Roman antiquities and baroque art – check out the Museo Nazionale Archeologico and Cappella Sansevero for a glimpse. Then, of course, there’s the city’s revered pizza, served at historic pizzerias such as Da Michele .

Beyond the city, Pompeii is an easy day trip and the Amalfi Coast is within striking distance via the sunny resort town of Sorrento .

A woman in a flowery dress admiring sunset over Lake Como and Bellagio old town in Italy

Cruise the Italian Lakes

Ringed by brooding Alpine summits and steep wooded slopes, the Italian Lakes have been a popular holiday spot since ancient times. At Lake Maggiore , you can explore the Isole Borromee with their ornate palaces and lavish gardens, while further east you can go celeb-spotting on Lake Como , cruising around its exquisite villas and villages.

To reach the lakes you’ll often have to pass through Milan , Italy’s northern powerhouse. A day here would be enough to take in some of its signature sights: Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper , the fairy-tale Duomo , the Quadrilatero d’Oro shopping district.

My favorite thing to do in Italy

Italy’s obvious beauty and blockbuster sights abound, but what I love are its simple pleasures: a leisurely lunch in a favorite trattoria, the sight of pine trees towering over Roman ruins, a glass of prosecco on a Venetian canal-side.

I also love wandering around Rome and seeing how its life plays out against a backdrop of ancient monuments and historic palazzi . There’s always something going on and even without trying I usually come across something special, an amazing baroque fountain or a teeming market in a medieval square. The city’s streets really are an experience in themselves. I mean where else can you wait for a tram just yards from where Julius Caesar was stabbed?

How much money do I need for Italy?

Italy isn’t cheap. Accommodation rates vary enormously between places and seasons but prices are universally high in popular destinations. That said, you can still find deals if you book early and avoid peak periods. Sightseeing can also add up with top sites charging top dollar. On the plus side, eating out doesn’t have to cost the earth, especially if you stick to pizza and gelato.

Some average daily costs:

  • Double room in an agriturismo (farm stay) €40-80
  • B&B room €60-140
  • Coffee (standing at a bar) €1.10
  • Midrange meal €25-35
  • Glass of wine €5-8
  • Museum admission €10-20
  • Public transport ticket (Rome) €1.50 for 100 minutes unlimited travel (but only one metro ride)
  • High-speed train ticket Rome to Florence €55

Frequently asked questions

This is italy, so do i have to dress up all the time.

In a word, no. When sightseeing go for comfort, especially when it comes to shoes – you’ll be walking a lot and cobbled streets can be murder on the feet. Note also that major religious sights often enforce dress codes, so make sure you can cover your shoulders, torso and thighs. For going out in the evening, smart casual is the way to go.

What’s the score with tipping?

Tipping is not strictly necessary in restaurants as most places add servizio (service) to the bill. If they don’t or if you want to leave something, a few euros is fine in pizzerias and trattorias; 5% to 10% in smarter restaurants.

What’s this about not drinking a cappuccino after 11am?

Italy has a whole (unwritten) rule book on the dos and don’ts of drinking. As a foreign visitor you’ll get a pass if you order the wrong drink at the wrong time, but it helps to know that Italians regard cappuccinos as breakfast drinks, call an espresso un caffè , and drink beer with pizza.

What’s the card vs cash situation?

Businesses are legally obliged to accept digital payments but it’s always best to have some cash on you. You probably won’t have any problems but it’s not unheard of for payment machines to be mysteriously broken in smaller bars, shops, museums or restaurants. Major credit cards are widely accepted (Amex less so).

Top 5 airlines flying to Italy

NYC JFK there is no information about delayed flight, milan airport no information where to pick up the bording pass

In-flight service was very good. Plane had spacious overhead bins and incorporated windows with an automatic dimming feature eliminating the need for traditional plastic shades. Boarding was halted and the crew did not communicate a reason. We waited on the gang plank for 30 minutes after showing boarding passes without being given a reason.

Our flight with Neos airlines was great. The price was very reasonable, the staff very professional and accomodating. The flight was comfortable with more leg room than most airlines I have travelled with in the past. The food and service while on board was good. I would travel again to Italy and back with Neos if given the opportunity.

We never got to the flight due to ferry cancelation due to bad weather and could not contact with anyone for support and advice. We'll appreciate your support now in our attempts to get refund

I'm a larger, athletic guy (6'2", 260lbs powerlifter) and I found the seats incredibly uncomfortable with minimal leg room, especially in a window seat. Now, I full understand that being smaller may change my view but even if I was 80lbs less, my legs would be the same size and I was sandwiched between my seat and the seat in front of me.

Horrible. This was not first class. This was a connecting flight whi h was late. My original flight never came. I hated the fact that delta gave me a connecting flight from New York to Orlando Florida. No meals and the television screens were not working. There wasn't even any power to charge your phones. This is NOT FIRST CLASS DELTA!!! Do better next time!

This flight was ridiculous. I had to have a connecting flight from New York to orlando Florida??? The flight left late and because it was a short flight there was no first class amenities. I had one alcohol drink. The flight crew was fine, but it sure did not feel like first class. Delta to me dropped the ball by giving me a connecting flight. By the time we got to Raleigh we would have missed the next flight. Lucky for me the flight never came so now I was stuck waiting for a later flight that came in late also.

Our flight was delayed in Atlanta. The staff could have gave us an explanation for the delay and how long it would be.

I liked the ease of checking in, luggage check in, wheel chair assistance, boarding and flight.

On my way home I had a layover. The flight from ATL to CLT was amended 5x while I was waiting. I could have driven home sooner. Overall from Dallas, Tx to Charlotte, NC I started my trip at 4:30pm, I didn’t get home until past midnight. I know things happen, but 5x to make me run back and forth in an airport from different terminals is excessive. I also upgraded to comfort + , I didn’t feel it was worth it. There was no benefit

They did a fine job. Can't wait to use Delta in the future.

There was a loud squeaky sound the whole time we were flying.

Had a broken tray in business class. Crew just shrugged it off.

The food from Lagos to Amsterdam was was very poor compared to AMS-YYZ

The flight was again delayed for more then 2 hours with some lousy explanation regarding the reason of the delay. Although the flight was delayed for more than 2 hours, no refreshments were offered (according to EU regulations). Last 4 flights on KLM - always at least 2 hrs late. So be prepared that you cannot plan anything with KLM.

The flight was delayed for 2 hrs. Because they didn’t have a crew to fly. And it is not a first time for klm to do that. Last time they cancelled my filght and rebooked me 3 days later. Not reliable airline

Booked connecting flights with KlM. My serving flight was the furthest part of the airport. On arrival in Zurich. My two cases arrived but only one carry on belong to my son. His three suitcase didn't arrive. After enquiring we discovered they were still in Amsterdam. We landed at 11.12. We eventually left the airport just after one.

Seats are fair enough for medium tall people. Good food all the trip. Fight attendances are warm

I thought KLM was the best airline but the Lima - Amsterdam was 1 hours late, the Brussels - Amsterdam was 2.30 hours late and the Amsterdam - Lima was 30 minutes late

The food was ok. The crew seemed like they were cranky. I had one guy get mad at me for passing in between the storage area to get to the other toilet. I can understand if it's not allowed but reprimanding me like I'm a student saying "This is the last time!" was not appropriate. During my meal time, there was a French family around me. No problems there but when we usually have meals, they are supposed to put their chair in the upright position. These people did not do it and the steward did not tell them to raise their seat in the upright position. However, I was told to do so! So, me and another person next to me had to eat with the monitor almost touching our faces. Furthermore, a lady in front of me was putting her feet up and preventing another elder passenger from putting her seat back. To make it worse, she was continuously hitting her back into her seat, shaking my monitor while I was watching a movie. A crew member did speak to her about it but then she accused me of pushing her seat forward! The crew member gave me a death stare and told me to stop pushing the seat forward. I did not even touch her seat at all, if I did, she would know it. Her boyfriend also stood up and tried to push her seat even further past the maximum decline to no avail. None of these people were reprimanded but the steward, some bald guy, was extremely friendly with them and did not even try to instruct them to do anything until it was time to land. I resisted the urge to really argue with them because I would have obviously been seen as the aggressor (I have no idea why). I hardly said anything on this flight except "more wine please" and "sorry" if I bumped into someone accidentally. Overall, it was an annoying flight and I had to resist the urge to yell at the steward and the people he was overly friendly with. The happiest moment of this flight was leaving it.

Overall a good experience. We were disappointed when we had to check our carry on due to the plane being full. KLM hadn’t notified us and we had valuable items in the carry on but they still made us check it. Some of the food was great and some was mediocre. Crew is really kind and funny.

The worst airline. Cancelled flight 30 min before boarding and rebooked on flight after 3 days.

It was nice to be on a legacy airline, people try at least.

So terrible. They would not rebook me for a flight until 2 days. I had to spend so much money to get my own flight. They were rude and not helpful.

Swiss ground crew was again at its prime and although I’m United 1K (Star Alliance Gold) they created problems with my hand luggage - while other passengers were boarding with more handbags and larger hand luggages, were critical on my 2 young kids attending the lounge with me and boarding the plane with me on the priority lane.

Overall a good experience, the flight was on time, the crew very attentive and friendly. However the seats are too cramped, there is no space, and as soon as the person in front reclines the seat, it's literally in your face.

Bag lost. Lost bag recovery process is an unsatisfying customer experience. Because 1) bag is still lost but also 2) the process is outdated and form-heavy and 3) in our case also involved a long line.

We so appreciated that our connecting flight waited for 6 of us!!!

We were very impressed with Swiss Air. The service was exceptional. Unfortunately, we had a baby behind us that screamed for hours. , It was a nightmare, though I completely understand that it was not Swiss Airs fault.

A lot of things could have been better. They lost our luggage. We missed our connection from YVR to Naples when we arrived in Zurich and then we got re-routed to Rome and then Naples. We eventually got to Naples but our bags didn’t. Our experience at the lost luggage in the Naples was not at all reassuring. They didn’t seem that interested in our problem. I did a live chat with Swiss customer service and all they could do is tell me to follow the process. Meanwhile we’ve had to spend significant money on clothes and I have to replace medications. This has meant our trip so far has been totally different than what we had planned. It’s not clear that our baggage will ever show up which means we will have lost significant amount of clothing and other things and our two month trip to Europe will have more problems than good memories. So far we are not happy.

We had to move to terminal 5 for the next part of our trip. Very un-organized and difficult.

Missed connecting train since flight was late into Zurich and I had to stay at airport hotel because of it as well as I had to repurchase train ticket

Great flight- smooth, nice crew, nice clean aircraft, departed a little late but arrived 10 early.

It was listed on my ticket as Finnair but there was no indication that the flight was Finnair. In fact the number was even different. There were no employees there until exactly 2 hours before so we had to wait in line at Iberia and hope

Sorting on line would have been appreciated Onward information on flights missed No ability to get seating arranged before we got to gate Very unfriendly at gate

The flight was Finnair but there was no indications anywhere that the checkin was for Finnair also. There was no one to ask. I think at a minimum they should list the code shares so people don’t stand in the wrong line for an hour.

I booked the flight with Finnair, which made the arrangements for downloading a boarding pass unnecessarily complicated. I wouldn't do that again. Instead I'd book direct with AA.

Had a nice flight to London on BA will fly with them again in the future

Finnair cancelled my flight 12 hours prior to leaving for Helsinki. They stated there were mechanical problems. I had to scurry around to find a new flight that would meet my needs for arrival in Helsinki. Luckily I was able to find alternate transportation through Lufthansa/United.

Helpful steward. Allowed me to move to some empty seats and I was able to get some sleep. He also had milk for my tea. Americans don’t realise that cream or half and half ruin tea.

Security was a mess at the Helsinki Airport. But I was delighted by the connecting flight waiting for us for JFK.

Very rude hostess. She embarrassed me in front of others. I went to sit after taking off in a different sit in the same economic cabin. Was the area where doors are. She come to me very laud and said: go back to your sit those sit are more expensive.wow! No diplomacy. Flight was super full except 3 of those sit. The only person in that row later during the flight occupied all sit laying down!. Once more disappointed at American Airlines. Early flight they lost my luggages for 4 days. Never refund money for replacement for some of essential items purchased..when I booked the flight I thought was Finlandair. I

9 tips for beginners visiting Italy for the first time

Lori Zaino

Planning your first vacation to Italy ? Not only is this beautiful country one of the top culinary destinations in the world, but it's also home to some seriously iconic tourist attractions to boot. With over 55 UNESCO World Heritage sites, three active volcanoes and over 1,500 lakes, you'll never get bored. And if you are, well, there's always pizza!

first class tours of italy

When organizing a vacation to Italy, there are a few things you should know in order to have a safe and enjoyable getaway. First-time travelers take note: these are some of the things you consider for your Italian adventure.

1. Figure out what kind of trip you want to have

Italy's got it all: 4,600 miles of coastline lined with hundreds of gorgeous beaches , numerous tourist attractions, lively cities, charming villages and sprawling vineyards. From low-cost to luxury, Italy has accommodation, restaurants and activities to fit every budget, whether it's renting a yacht off the coast of Capri, staying in an affordable hostel in Rome or enjoying a Sicilian farmhouse getaway.

first class tours of italy

Consider your interests, as well as some of the things Italy is famous for, like gastronomy (you could build a trip around dining out or cooking classes), art (Italy has some of the top museums in the world) or exploring a wine region (drive through the hills of Prosecco or Tuscany's wine country).

Related: How to have a budget vacation in Italy

Or, think about destinations. For each week you have of vacation , you can comfortably squeeze in two destinations (maybe more if you're a very active traveler).

  • If you love art and tourist attractions, consider Rome and Florence.
  • If you love fashion but also want to relax, consider Milan and one of the northern lakes.
  • If you want pizza, cityscape and coastal charm, consider Nap les and the Amalfi coast.
  • If you want to dig into Italy's food and wine scene, consider a road trip through Tuscany or Piedmont.
  • If you love skiing , consider a visit to Milan and the Italian Alps.
  • If you're looking for romance, consider exploring Verona and Venice.
  • If you need a beach vacation, consider exploring an island like Sardinia or Sicily.
  • If you have 10 days or more and want to enjoy the most typical tourist circuit, consider a trip to the big three: Rome, Florence and Venice -- some of the country's most popular spots for visitors.

Note that while you can find various price points around the country for lodging, dining and activities, typically, costs are lower in southern Italy than in northern Italy.

2. Pick the right season

In general, Italy has wonderful weather. Many areas of the country see lots of sunshine and temperatures are mild even in winter, though summers can be steamy. Depending on what you plan to do, make sure to consider the season. Beach visits are best in the summer, though months like May and September see fewer crowds and still have great weather.

Related: These are the best times to visit Italy

Avoid larger, crowded cities like Rome in the heart of summer, unless you're prepared for extreme heat. Harvest season/autumn is the ideal time to visit the wine region, and southern Italy can be mild throughout the winter. Many deals can be found in the low season, but know that winter in the north can be cold and rainy.

If you do go to Italy between March and October, bring sunblock and a hat -- don't underestimate those Mediterranean rays.

3. Do your research when it comes to tourism

Although Covid-19 has put a dampener on tourism, during busier times, attractions like the Vatican may see up to 30,000 visitors per day. That means you may have to wait a long time in line to buy a ticket and enter. Add Rome's scorching sunshine to the mix and you may end up sunburned, exhausted from queuing all day and never get the chance to step foot in the Sistine Chapel.

If visiting big-name tourist attractions is important to you, buy tickets online. Skip-the-line tickets or guided tours may also be worth the price: evaluate your options and decide.

first class tours of italy

City passes are another alternative. The Milan city pass offers things like discounts on popular attractions, free Milan public transport and a free drink at a local Milanese bar. The Rome tourist card has fast-track entry benefits and free access to the Vatican and the Colosseum. Florence's city pass includes skip-the-line entry to Galleria degli Uffizi and Galleria dell'Accademia, plus tickets for the hop-on, hop-off bus tour.

So, think about what you want to do and see, do the maths and purchase ahead.

4. But don't forget about local spots too

Visiting Italy's most famous attractions should hold a firm spot on your bucket list. That being said, plan to take some time to get off the tourist track a bit. Consider exploring more local neighborhoods or visiting a small village or a less-popular spot like Lake Maggiore instead of Lake Como. Seeing all the big-name hotspots is a must, but experiencing the beauty of true Italian culture and cuisine may be even better.

5. Take the train

The Freeciarossa runs between some of Italy's best destinations. These high-speed trains from company Trenitalia are affordable, fast and comfortable. Traveling up to about 180 miles per hour, trains are one of the best and quickest ways to get from A to B. And, you won't have to deal with learning the Italian rules of the road or the hassle of car rental agencies. Taking the train is easy: You can purchase tickets easily online ahead of time or last minute depending on your travel style. You can visit spots like Milan, Rome , Florence, Venice, Turin and Naples on the Frecciarossa trains.

6. Don't discount the islands

Italy's island culture goes beyond just the beach. And, there are over 450 of them! Sicily has a whole sub-culture of its own, and far-flung spots like the Tremiti islands or the Aeolian islands will ensure you get sufficiently off-the-beaten-path . If it's luxury you desire, Sardinia's Costa Smeralda is a hotspot and nothing looks sexier on an Instagram feed than Capri.

7. Familiarize yourself with the language and culture

You might get lucky when it comes to a larger city like Rome, where many locals speak English.

Southern Italy or smaller villages are a different story. Luckily, Italians are a friendly bunch and will do their best to communicate with you despite any language barriers. Come prepared with a few key phrases and your favorite translation app downloaded.

first class tours of italy

Italy is old, and so are its streets. Many are made of cobblestone. While locals (Milan, here's looking at you) may jog by in designer stilettos, you should wear comfortable footwear. Make sure to dress modesty, especially when visiting churches. You won't be allowed into spots like Vatican City if your knees and shoulders aren't covered.

While mealtimes aren't quite as late as Spain's, Italians tend to eat slightly later. Expect lunch around 1:00 p.m., and dinners around 8:30 p.m. or 9:00 p.m.

8. Money-saving tips

While it's normal to make a tourist faux pas or two (especially on your first trip), here are some things you should avoid:

  • Tipping at restaurants if it's already included on your bill (many spots add in a 10% service charge).
  • Heavily tipping taxi drivers (rounding up to the nearest euro is normal).

first class tours of italy

Save even more money with the following:

  • Take advantage of apertivo hours in northern Italy. These are happy hours that offer free buffet food for a few hours pre-dinner time in the early evening. Order a drink or two to gain access to the snacks.
  • Stand at the bar to drink your espresso. Table seating at breakfast has an additional charge, and even more if you want to eat outside.
  • Beware of the "coperto." This is a service charge for simply eating at the restaurant , usually a euro or two per person.
  • Don't eat or drink in the main city square. These spots are usually overpriced tourist traps.

9. Be alert for travel scams

Watch out for those trying to take advantage of unsuspecting tourists with scams :

  • Pickpockets;
  • Gladiators: If you take a photo of or with them, they'll expect a tip;
