  • Travel to Dundee

Dundee is easy to walk round, easy to explore and, crucially, easy to get to. Wherever you happen to be travelling from and however you choose to transport yourselves, you’ll be able to find a stress-free way of getting here. And once, you’ve arrived, all that’s left for you to do is soak up everything that the city has to offer.

By car, Dundee is accessible from all over the UK. It’s less than a two-hour drive from Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, for example, and Manchester is around five hours from here. Longer journeys from London (8.5 hours) and Birmingham (6.25 hours) are relatively simple thanks to the UK’s motorway network. Dundee itself is on the A90 and A92, the latter of which will feed you into the city across the iconic Tay Bridge.

Dundee’s railway station is located right at the heart of the action, close to the new waterfront regeneration and just yards from the banks of the river. There are direct services to and from Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow, all of which are less than 90 minutes away. From London Kings Cross, the direct journey is around 6.5 hours.

The city’s international airport is located just 3km from the centre on the shore of the Firth of Tay. Direct flights are available from both Belfast and London City. If you like to stretch your legs after your flight, the airport is a pleasing 20-minute waterfront walk away from the middle of Dundee.

And if you prefer to arrive by coach, you’ll be impressed with the number of services into Dundee from towns and cities right across the UK. The city’s Seagate Bus Station is located in the centre, within walking distance of all the major attractions and a large number of excellent Dundee hotels and guesthouses.

However you choose to get here, just make sure you get here! We can’t wait to see you, and to show you everything that our wonderful city has to offer.

10 Best Things To Do In Dundee, Scotland

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland McManus Art Gallery

Nestled on the shoreline of the River Tay, Dundee is one of Scotland’s cities that’s nestled on the eastern coastline. Not only that, it is pretty great for a day trip, with loads of the best things to do in Dundee dotted around this smaller Scottish city.

Now, I’ll be honest, sometimes Dundee gets a bad rap as a place to visit. That being said, after living in Scotland (and visiting Dundee every other week) whilst studying in St Andrews , its regeneration is in full swing.

Nowadays, with the likes of the V&A Dundee , the history around RSS Discovery and nearby spots like Glamis Castle make it a perfect place to stop for a day trip.

So, to help you get the most out of your visit, take a look at some of the top places in Dundee that you can’t miss. Have an amazing time exploring Scotland; it really is a beautiful country.

1.) V&A Dundee

Discovering Two Scottish Gems - The V&A Dundee And The Magnificent Glamis Castle (3)

The V&A Dundee is, without a doubt, one of the best things to do in Dundee in its new waterfront regeneration. After demolishing an old hotel and leisure centre, the design-led V&A Dundee has been open since 2018.

Discovering Two Scottish Gems - The V&A Dundee And The Magnificent Glamis Castle (12)

Now, what I love about the V&A Dundee is that it focuses on, and is influenced by, the achievements of Scottish design. There are so many exhibits and highlights to see at the V&A Dundee. Plus, they also hold seasonal exhibits, too.

Discovering Two Scottish Gems - The V&A Dundee And The Magnificent Glamis Castle (8)

Best of all, V&A Dundee is free to enter and well worth stopping by as you wander the River Tay waterfront.

2.) The McManus

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland McManus Art Gallery

This Gothic revival-style building is located in the Meadowside area of Dundee and houses some of Dundee’s most prized possessions.

You see, it houses The McManus Museum and Gallery which has eight incredible galleries to explore.

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland McManus Art Galleries

Once inside, you’ll get to explore the extensive collection of fine and contemporary art pieces that make Dundee Special.

Plus, you’ll get to learn more about Dundee’s expansion in Victorian times (When jute was big business in the city).

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland Museums Art Gallery

For me, I love visiting the Victoria Gallery. You see, this is where they keep some of Scotland’s most prized oil paintings. They are centuries old and so beautiful to see.

Just be sure to give yourself at least 90 minutes to explore the galleries.

3.) Discovery Walk

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland Tay Bridge

Although small, Discovery Walk is right next to the Slessor Gardens which is right next to the V&A Dundee. What it lacks in size (it’ll only take you 5 minutes to visit), it makes up with facts.

You see, Discovery Walk is dedicated to extraordinary people who have worked and lived in the city of Dundee. There are numerous plaques that all honour their societal impact and their connection with the city.

There are fifteen plaques in total and honestly, you’ll see them in minutes. It’s a great way to learn more about Dundee’s famous past residents.

4.) Glamis Castle

Discovering Two Scottish Gems - The V&A Dundee And The Magnificent Glamis Castle (27)

Nestled in the countryside, around a 20-minute drive from the centre of Dundee, Glamis Castle is well worth a visit. In fact, I’d say it’s one of the best things to do in Dundee if you have a car or are willing to take a taxi for the short ride.

Discovering Two Scottish Gems - The V&A Dundee And The Magnificent Glamis Castle (28)

Now, what makes Glamis Castle so special is that it used the be the childhood home of the Queen Mother. That’s Queen Elizabeth II’s mother.

Discovering Two Scottish Gems - The V&A Dundee And The Magnificent Glamis Castle (35)

Not only that, it has quite a dark history that dates back almost 1,000 years. You see, Glamis Castle is the site where Malcolm II (King of Scotland) was murdered back in 1034.  Some centuries later, William Shakespeare set his place where Macbeth resided in Glamis Castle.

Discovering Two Scottish Gems - The V&A Dundee And The Magnificent Glamis Castle (30)

We loved visiting for a few hours to explore the gardens, learn more about its royal history and see priceless artefacts and letters from royalty that had a connection to Glamis Castle.

5.) RSS Discovery

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland RRS Discovery Visit

Situated just shy of the V&A Dundee, RSS Discovery is a wooden research ship that’s world famous. You see, it’s the very ship that took Scott and Shackleton to the Antarctic continent back in 1901.

Discovering Two Scottish Gems - The V&A Dundee And The Magnificent Glamis Castle (17)

Nowadays, RSS Discovery has been restored and moored on the shores of the River Tay; a short 2-minute walk from the V&A Dundee.

Now, you will need to pay a relatively small fee to hop on board but it’s well worth it. Once on RSS Discovery, you can walk around the history rooms, learn more about the research that Scott and Shackleton undertook and see the sleeping quarters. It’s pretty impressive.

Visits will take around 45 minutes and fun for all the family.

6.) The Law

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland Monumnet View The Law

Visiting The Law , which locals call the Dundee Volcano is one of the best things to do in Dundee if you’re looking for views across the city. You see, from The Law , you get to see all across the River Tay and further over to the Kingdom of Fife which is so beautiful.

Now, you don’t need to hike to the summit of The Law, there’s a road that will take you to the viewpoint. This makes it accessible and perfect for anyone who has accessibility issues.

Afterwards, head back into the centre of Dundee and stop for a late breakfast or lunch at The Flame Tree Cafe . Their milkshakes and freshly baked jacket potatoes are so yummy.

7.) Visit City Quay

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland View Across Tay From Fife

One of Dundee’s newest areas, City Quay is a residential and small entertainment area that has bars, restaurants and a few little shops.

Also, don’t forget, you can also visit HMS Unicorn which is moored in City Quay and dates back to 1824. It’s well worth visiting if you’re interested in British naval history and so unique to visit.

If you’re looking for a bit of an adventure, hop over to Wild Shore Dundee. Here, you can pop on a wetsuit and jump right into City Quay harbour. Once in, you can scale, slip and slide all over the inflatable assault course that’s harder than it looks. It’s so much fun.

Also, nearby (not in the Quay itself),  is Gidi Grill , a yummy West African foodie spot that’s just so good. The dinner menu consists of delicious grilled meats, plantains and so much more. All of these are infused with the spices which are originally blended by the chefs in the house.

8.) Overgate (and surrounding area)

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland Museums

The newer shopping centre in Dundee, Overgate is a shopping centre that has many of the high street brands that are popular across the UK.

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland City Centre

Now, there are a few smaller independent retailers, but Overgate’s main goal is to have big names under one covered area. It’s one of the best things to do in Dundee if the weather gets overly wet or you’re looking for some UK-specific stores.

Oh, and be sure to look out for the Desperate Dan statue that’s close by. You see, Dundee is the city where Desperate Dan was said to have been born in the world-famous comics.

9.) Dundee Contemporary Arts

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland Viewpoint over city

Dundee Contemporary Arts (DCA) is an art centre that’s one of the region’s premier spots to visit for arthouse films. Not only that, there is a range of exhibitions that seasonally change and are open to explore to anyone who wants to visit.

We absolutely love visiting when we go back to Dundee as there’s always something new and exciting showing.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for the artistic workshops they run throughout the year. They are incredible to learn new skills while you visit Dundee.

10.) Dundee Science Centre

Best Things To Do In Dundee Scotland Train Station

Nestled within the Greenmarket area, the Dundee Science Centre is right next to Dundee’s train station. In fact, it’s walking distance from the train; taking about 3 minutes.

Once here, you’ll get to explore over 50 hands-on and interactive science activities. The whole experience is perfect if you’re visiting with the younger members of the family. There are galleries and exhibits like; Medical Marvels, the Exploring Zones and Sensory Zones for kids to enjoy.

The Best of Dundee – A City Guide

travel dundee no 18

This post was most recently updated on August 24th, 2021

Up until recently Dundee was a hidden gem in Scotland’s east coast. However, in recent years Dundee has gained worldwide exposure and has emerged as a top contender in must visit city destinations across Scotland. It is the perfect destination for a city break, a weekend getaway or as a home base to explore other parts of Scotland. In this City Guide you will find the Best of Dundee with all the best things to do in Dundee to help you plan your visit.

Why You Should Visit Dundee

Before I provide you with a list of the Best things to do in Dundee I want to give you a few good reasons to visit.

Dundee is in the midst of a £1 Billion redevelopment of its waterfront. Including the opening of the stunning V&A Dundee, which was designed by world renown architect Kengo Kuma. A building and museum that has won many accolades including “The worlds greatest places for 2019” by TIME Magazine.

And you will be happy to know that the V&A is not the only amazing thing to see in Dundee. And TIME Magazine is not the only one to recognize this amazing little city.

Pin Now to Read Later – Visiting Dundee a City Guide to The Best of Dundee

Visiting Dundee Scotland. In this City Guide you will find the Best of Dundee including all the best Dundee attractions and the best things to do in Dundee to help you plan your visit.

Some Awards and Accolades

Dundee continues to win awards gaining exposure and notoriety in the U.K and across the globe. You may have seen Dundee named in 2015 by GQ Magazine as “Britain’s Coolest Little City” and listed in 2018 by the Wall Street Journal as part of their top “10 hot destinations” to visit. Or, you might have even seen it mentioned in National Geographic’s 2019 “Must see cool list” and “Top 19 cities to visit in the world”. But those accolades are not Dundee’s only claims to fame.

The city of Dundee has a history of innovation and creativity. It is also a city fueled by design, and the only UNESCO City of Design in the UK . A prestigious award that is held only by 22 other cities around the world. No wonder the V&A decided to build their first museum outside of London in Dundee.

Many other innovations have originated in this city. Did you know it is the birthplace of the Scottish Gaming Industry ? It is the home to 4J Studios (the company that developed Minecraft and Angry Birds ). And some of the biggest titles in the gaming world such as Grand Theft Auto where designed and created in Dundee. Dundee is also famous for the Dandy , the Beano and Desperate Dan .

Location, Location, Location

Another great reason to visit Dundee is its great location.  The city of Dundee has a very favorable location making it an ideal destination to call home as you explore other parts of Scotland. It has easy access by public transport to Scotlands other 6 cities – Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Perth and Stirling.   Furthermore it is close to beautiful beaches, picturesque coastal towns , imposing castles , historic and filming locations, breathtaking mountains and and array of activities to suit your preference.

A City Guide to the Best of Dundee – What to See and Do When Visiting Dundee

Best of Dundee - Views from The Law

A city that was once famed for jute, jam and journalism (the 3 Js)  is now also a hub for culture, biomedical research, design and artistic innovation. And as it continues to evolve it offers even more activities to satisfy your every desire on a holiday break. So here is a list of the best things to do in Dundee to help you plan your visit:

1. Take In The Views

I love a good view and the perspective you gain from a high point. Being high up helps orient me and get the lay of the land. Therefore, one of the first things I like to do when visiting a new city is find a high point and take in the view. Some of the best places you can go for good views in Dundee are:

Best of Dundee - views from The Law

Right in the middle of the city and sitting on an extinct volcano the Law is the highest point in Dundee. Its summit is over 500 feet above sea level and can be easily accessed by foot, car or bus.  The Law offers panoramic views of the city, and on a clear day you can see for miles. Some favorites to see from here are the river Tay and the famous Tay Bridge.

The Old Steeple (St. Mary’s Tower)

Only open on select dates during the summer for guided tours, the old steeple is the oldest surviving medieval church tower. Not only is it rich in history, but climbing the 232 steps to the top makes for incredible panoramic views of Dundee city center. Tours are organized by DD tours .

St. Paul’s Cathedral

Best of Dundee views from St. Pauls Cathedral

St. Paul’s Cathedral is situated in the heart of the city and sits on top of the rock that used to be the site of Dundee’s medieval castle. Inside the church it is spacious and airy with beautiful windows and mosaic work by Salviati of Venice. If you are touring the city with local guide like I did, you might get access to the top of the tower.  From here you will have the most amazing 360 views of the city center.

Mills Observatory

For otherworldly views there is no better place than the Mills Observatory. Ok, so these are not your traditional views.  But who said views of the stars are not incredible? Built in 1935 it features a 7m dome which houses a Victorian refracting telescope. You can watch the stars and planets up close and it is said you can observe up to 30,000 objects in the sky. There are different events, talks and planetarium shows throughout the year. For hours, cost and programming click here

2. Immerse Yourself in Culture And Visit a Museum

Dundee is a great place for creatives and has many venues to enjoy and explore the arts. Therefore, it was hard to choose the best of Dundee in the museum category.  However, I still managed to put together a list. Here are a few of the many incredible museums and attractions you can experience while in Dundee.

Please note that addresses and phone numbers were current at time of publishing. While I strive to keep this updated please refer to each attractions website for the most up to date information as well as opening times and cost of admission.

The Victoria & Albert Museum (The V&A Dundee)

travel dundee no 18

There is no question that the V&A would make the best of Dundee list. Time Magazine just named it one of the worlds greatest places for 2019 . Architecturally it is probably the most standout piece in the city.  It was designed by acclaimed Japanese architect Kengo Kuma and is Scotland’s first design museum. The museum opened its doors in September 2018 and has already brought in more than half a million visitors.  The V&A Dundee hosts permanent and changing exhibits that celebrate Scotland’s design heritage as well as the best in design around the world.

The beautiful Gothic Revival Building houses magnificent exhibitions throughout the 2 floors and eight galleries inside. Dundee Science Center

Families looking to experience some of the best of Dundee should look no further than the Dundee Science Center. The Dundee Science center is packed with experiments, live shows, interactive exhibits and hands on activities that will make learning fun. It is the perfect place to explore the wonders of science .  While there are some activities for most ages I believe it is best suited for children over 5 years old.  So if you are visiting Dundee with school aged children definitely add this on to your list of Dundee Attractions to visit.

Museum of Transport

One of the newer museum additions to the city. The Dundee Museum of Transport opened its doors in April 2014. The museum displays vehicles from local and national collections and tells the stories of local transport pioneers and innovators. Please note that it is currently operating out of temporary premises. However, it is scheduled to move to a new location within the next few years.

3. Step Back in Time And Explore Magical Castles

If you are a castle lover then you will want to explore the four castles closest to Dundee. Broughty Ferry Castle, Claypotts Castle, Dudhope Castle and Mains Castle.

Broughty Castle

Best of Dundee - Broughty Castle

This castle is one of the best of Dundee and part of the must visit Dundee attractions. Broughty Castle is a 15th century fortified costal fort which was rebuilt in the 19th century. Climbing the stone steps to the lookout room rewards you with beautiful views of the Tay. If in luck you might even spot some dolphins. The castle also houses exhibitions on military history, colonial life, and Victorian art.

Address:  Castle Approach, Broughty Ferry, Dundee DD5 2TF Phone: +44 (0) 1382 436 916 Website:   http://www.leisureandculturedundee.com/welcome-broughty-castle-museum

Claypotts Castle

travel dundee no 18

This is probably one of the quirkiest castles in Scotland . Located in the West Ferry area of Dundee, Claypotts Castle is one of the best preserved examples of a 16th century z-plan tower house. The shape is odd but would have been popular in 16th century for defensive purposes. Although it is unlikely that Claypotts castle would have had much of a defensive role given its domestic scale. It has a rectangular shaped main block, two large round towers, two smaller stair towers and the original thatched roof.

Address:  Claypotts Rd, Dundee DD5 3JY Phone: +44 (0) 1241 878 756 Website: https://www.historicenvironment.scot/visit-a-place/places/claypotts-castle/

Dudhope Castle

Dudhope Castle - Dundee Scotland

This castle is one of Dundee’s oldest buildings and was built in the late 13th century as a smaller tower house. It was later rebuilt and then further expanded to the current larger structure in the 1580’s.

In 1792 it was converted to be used as woolen mills but this never took off. So it was later used as part of a military base and barracks. It has served many other purposes but most recently it is being used as office accommodations by Dundee City Council.

Address:  3 Infirmary Brae Dundee, DD3 6TU Phone: +44 (0) 1382 433 710 Option 5 Website: https://www.dundeecity.gov.uk/service-area/neighbourhood-services/environment/dudhope-park-and-castle

Other Nearby Castles

travel dundee no 18

Many of Scotlands most famous, unique and beautiful castles are within driving distance from Dundee and would make for wonderful day trips.  Some are even easily accessible using public transportation.

Two of my favorites which you can easily drive to are Glamis castle,  only about half hour drive, and Dunnottar Castle which is about 1 hr drive.

Some of the other castles and palaces in driving distance and worth mentioning are: Elcho, Drummond, Doune, Midhope, Linlithgow and Huntingtower Castles. Scone Palace, Castle Campbell, and The Black Watch Castle Museum.

Other Magical Castles you should visit on your Scotland Holiday

A few must visit castles which are  accessible by train and/or public transport are Edinburgh, Stirling, and St. Andrews Castle.

These are just a few of the many castles you can visit while staying in Dundee.

4. Go to The Theater

Scottish theater dates back at least to the Middle Ages. And Dundee has a long history in culture and theater with many theaters operating in the city.

If you are a theater aficionado and are visiting Dundee then you must go to the Dundee Repertory.  Recognized amongst the top regional theaters in the UK, it plays to an average audience of over 70,000 a year. It stages at least six of its own productions a year, and is home to Scotland’s only full-time company of actors and Scotland’s principal contemporary dance company.

5. Discover Dundee’s Maritime History and Heritage

With a waterfront location it is not surprising that Dundee has a strong Maritime industry and history.  From whaling to ship construction Dundee has experienced many ups and downs. Come explore Dundee’s past and learn about its maritime history and heritage through the following Dundee attractions:

Discovery Point & The Royal Research Ship Discovery (RRS Discovery)

Best of Dundee - Discovery Point RSS Discovery

There is no doubt that Discovery Point is one of the best things to do in Dundee. Not only is it a well know site but the RRS Discovery is a great family attraction. You can climb aboard the ship, be its captain and explore the cabins and artifacts on display. Learn about it’s voyage to Antarctica and see what captain Scott and his crew experienced as they sailed into uncharted wilderness & through remote and tempestuous seas.

6. Take a Walk to See The Best of Dundee

Dundee is a compact city and a great way to explore it is by foot. You can walk the streets and find your own hidden gems. Or you can follow one or a few of these unique walks.

Go on a Discovery Walk   – now part of Dundee’s new waterfront at the edge of Slessor Gardens. The walk celebrates the extraordinary people who live and work in the city explaining their achievements.

Another people focused walk is the Dundee Womens Trail.   Which focuses on the lives of twenty five remarkable women who have made an impact on the city.

Dundee’s Global Trail will take you on an “intriguing historic Voyage of Discovery highlighting the extraordinary locations which make connections between Dundee and the rest of the world”

Another favorite of mine when visiting a city is finding street art or public art. And one of the great things about a city so focused on design is the amount of public art you will find. So why not go on a sculpture/art walk.  You can try and locate the numerous bronze sculptures and characters from Dandy and Beano comics such as Desperate Dan, Minnie the Minx or Gnasher the dog.

Visiting Dundee - A walk through Dundee

Alternatively find all the painted doors – a project named “Open Close” which is Dundees first street art trail where doors where given to artists around the city to paint. Or look for the marvelous painted walls  that artists from all over the world have been designing and brining to life.

Lastly take in a breath of fresh air with a coastal walk . If you head east from Dundee there is a beautiful walk along the Firth of Tay which ends at Broughty Castle. Then walk around this beautiful seaside town and reward yourself with an ice cream from the famous gelateria Visocchis.

7. Head To The Beach

I never associated Scotland with beaches, but as it turns out it has some pretty nice ones.  Luckily Dundee has its own beach so you won’t need to go far to have some fun by the water. Additionally, Dundee is near other great beaches that would make an excellent day or afternoon out.  Here are a few of my favorite beaches near Dundee:

Broughty Ferry   Beach

Dundee has an award winning beach of its own – Broughty Ferry Beach. It is actually in Broughty Ferry which is a beautiful seaside town just 4 miles east of the city. Popular with locals and tourists alike, Broughty Ferry has quaint shops, good restaurants, an imposing castle and a famed sandy beach.  It is easily accessibly by public transport and makes for a great afternoon excursion from Dundee.

The beach has lovely views across the Tay. And during summer months the volleyball nets are in place and there is a safe area for swimming.  And if you would rather have fun on a boat you could book one of several tours to see dolphins, seals, the V&A from the water or even a lighthouse.

Carnoustie Beach

Carnoustie beach is a short walk from Carnoustie Railway Station so it is another beach you can access via public transport. If you are bringing a car there is a choice of car parks close by.

It is small in size and does not have powder soft sand but a mix of sand and rock.  Depending on the tides it will look totally different, with high tides bringing the water up to the sea wall. Several golf courses are nearby, including the famous Carnoustie Golf Course, which has hosted the Open Championships. So you could combine a round of golf with your beach outing.

Monifieth Beach

Monifieth is a long, sandy beach looking out over the Firth of Tay.  There is a caravan park nearby and some fields which are great for bird watching. Additionally, there is a walking and cycle path right by the beach, a Childs play area and skate park.  Parking, toilets and picnic benches are found nearby along Marine Drive.

Bonus – Lunan Bay

If you do not mind a 45 min drive then Lunan Bay is a great choice. It is a mile-long sandy beach, with a reputation as one of the best in Angus.

Although set in a secluded location this beach is popular for many activities. Including swimming, watersports, fishing, horse riding, and peaceful walks in a natural setting.  There are a number of historic sites nearby including the ruins of Red Castle.

8. Enjoy the Great Outdoors

Dundee is known as the sunniest city in Scotland and as such boasts a variety of outdoor spaces where you can enjoy the sun.  Here are a few of the best places to go in Dundee to spend some time outside.

Magdalen Green

Best of Dundee - Outdoors and Gardens

The beautiful Magdalen Green has the distinction of being Dundee’s oldest city park. The bandstand which was built in 1890 is in icon in the city hosting outdoor concerts throughout the summer.

Perhaps on your way to Magdalen Green you might want to walk on one of the longest and most beautiful cobbled streets in Dundee – Strawberry Bank.

Slessor Gardens

Another great place to spend time outdoors while in Dundee is Slessor Gardens. These gardens are part of Dundee’s waterfront and feature a large open space that hosts big outdoor events. Additionally, they are surrounded by smaller themed gardens.  To find out what events are taking place in Slessor Gardens click here .

University of Dundee Botanic Garden

The Dundee Botanic Gardens are located at the West end of the city and are funded entirely by the University of Dundee.  In their gardens you can find plants that are indigenous of Britain as well as a variety of species from all over the world. The University and the Botanic Gardens are fascinating Dundee attractions to visit.

Camperdown Country Park

Camperdown House

Popular with locals Camperdown Country Park is 3 miles from the city center and is Dundee’s largest city park covering over 400 acres. It includes a wildlife center, two golf courses, a play complex, green space and woodlands. Furthermore, it is also home to the historic Camperdown House.  For a map of the park click here.

Balgay Hill Park

Balgay Hill Park is the home of the Mills Observatory. It is thickly forested and has a variety of native and exotic trees. There are nice trails and walking paths around the park many of which provide outstanding views across the river Tay.  For a map and more information click here .

Where to Shop When Visiting Dundee – Best of Dundee Independent Shops

There is a large selection of shops in Dundee city center.  When you are walking about the city you can find many known brand name stores. Dundee also has two decent size shopping centers – The Overgate and T he Wellgate . However, I am a big believer in supporting small and local business. Therefore I prefer to seek out independent shops and retailers.  And Dundee happens to have a few that are worth a visit. Here are my favorites.

Grouchos – The Best Music Store in Dundee

Grouchos - best music store in Dundee

This is probably one of the coolest record stores I have been in. A Dundee institution for over 40 years is there to help with your music needs. Grouchos is an eclectic music store that buys and then sells vintage records, cds, DVDs and even concert tickets. You never know what treasures you will find so go on a music shopping journey with a visit to Grouchos.

JA Braithwaite – Dundee’s Oldest Shop

The history of Dundee’s love affair with coffee goes way back. And Dundee’s oldest shop has been supplying coffee to its locals since 1868. They are the first specialist tea and coffee shop in the city.   It is a memorable store with vintage furnishings, wooden counters, and endless drawers and containers filled with many varieties of tea and coffee.  The hard part is selecting which ones to buy. I always take home a few different flavors when I visit.

Spex Pistols – The Coolest Optical Boutique

Spex Pistols -The best Optical Shop in Dundee

Glasses and shades have never looked cooler. Spex Pistols offers a large variety of frames from vintage to modern.  There is something to suit every style and personality. What is even better, they provide repair service, which in todays disposable society is quite remarkable. Definitely a cool place to see and to be seen.

Where to Stay When Visiting Dundee – Best Accommodations in Dundee

Dundee makes a great weekend getaway and a perfect home base to explore other parts of Scotland. So you will want to find the perfect place to call home while you visit and explore.

From lodgings large enough for a family to the perfect romantic getaway for two, there are a variety of accommodations to suit your every need and budget. And with Dundee being such a compact city all are perfectly situated minutes from local attractions. Here are a few I have stayed in and can personally recommend:

Apex City Quay

When I visited Dundee back in 2016 I stayed in the Apex City Quay Hotel & Spa.  The rooms were simple yet modern and well appointed with all the amenities my family needed.  It also had great views of the City Quay (you can select a view of the river Tay instead).

The bar and restaurant were lovely, the food was great and the selection of drinks varied.  As an added bonus they have an onsite gym and spa offering a pool, hydro massage hot tubs, sauna and steam room.

Malmaison Dundee

Best of Dundee - Malmaison

The Malmaison is chic, sexy and elegant and in my opinion the perfect place for a romantic getaway. If you want to stay in a boutique hotel that has style and character then look no further than The Malmaison .

Overall the style is dark, and a bit goth it combines colors an textures in a way that speak luxury. Plush rooms with sexy details and all necessary amenities.

travel dundee no 18

The food in the restaurant is superb.  And the staff is friendly, going out of their way to serve and make your stay a memorable one.

Urban Quarters

Light, bright, modern, and airy.  Urban Quarter’s slogan is “Stay Different”.  This is the perfect location to stay if you want to live like a local.  With plenty of space and tons of amenities Urban Quarters is perfect for a family or couple that wants more space without the high price tag.  For a detailed review read “Checking in – Urban Quarters Dundee”

Where to Eat When Visiting Dundee

I have found that if you eat at the right places Scotland has pretty amazing food. Whenever possible try and find independently owned restaurants or restaurants that use locally sourced produce. Not only will you be supporting the local economy but food will be fresh and be prepared with love – therefore taste great! Another thing I recommend is trying local specialties – so if you get a chance try some Dundee Cake and Dundee Marmalade.

As part of my stay at The Malmaison I got to eat at their fabulous restaurant – Chez Mal Brasserie . The ambiance in the restaurant feels intimate and cozy and the menu is eclectic and upscale with a nice selection of wine and drinks to go with the food.

Chez Mal Brasserie

Here is a nice list of where to eat in Dundee and here is one from Lonely Planet

Best Coffee Shops in Dundee

Best of Dundee: Coffee Shops

Coffee culture is strong in Dundee and many independent cafes have opened its doors all over the city. They offer a great place to meet up, do some work and of course have great cup of Joe.  Two of my favorites are Blend Coffee , and  The Flame Tree Cafe.   Some other coffee shops loved by locals are: The Parlor Cafe, Tartan Coffee House and The Empire State Coffee Artisan Roasters.

Some Logistics – How to Get There

Dundee airport is very close to city center, however not many commertial flights go through it. Therefore most people will be flying in to Edinburgh (60 miles south) and then arriving by car, bus or train.

Airport Contact Details Address:  Dundee Airport (DDE), Riverside, Dundee DD2 1UH Phone: +44 (0) 1382 662 200 Website: https://www.hial.co.uk/dundee-airport/contact-us/

From Edinburgh  it is just over one hour drive. You follow the M90 / A90 north over the bridge. Then you can continue on the M90 through Perth then into Dundee or take the A92 further east and over the Tay Road Bridge into Dundee.

Dundee Railway Station serves the city of Dundee. It has two terminal platforms. This station opened in 2018 as part of the Dundee Waterfront regeneration project. There are direct connections to London’s Kings Cross Station. And frequent service to other cities like Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen. For tickets and timetables visit the ScotRail website.

Oh I have never heard of Dundee! This must really be a hidden gem in Scotland. I particularly like the Malmaison, it looks so quaint! The Claypotts Castle looks like straight from a fairy tale! I really need to visit!

Dundee is starting to gain recognition worldwide. It won’t be long before you start hearing from it everywhere. And as far as castles go, there are so many magical castles in Scotland and quite a few are in or near Dundee so if you want to visit castles Dundee is a great place to base yourself at. And Malmaison would be a great option to stay in.

Honestly, I’ve never thought about Dundee to visit as a tourist but I really want to go, the architecture of the V&S is spectacular and worth visiting the city for that alone! Together with the beautiful setting, and historical buildings, it looks perfect for a weekend break.

The V&A is a standout architecturally. And there is plenty of other great attractions to make a nice weekend getaway.

I’ve never thought of visiting Dundee before reading this, but I’m slowly changing my mind. You’re so right about the V&A in Dundee, it’s absolutely gorgeous. I also never knew about how many castles or beaches there are there before this post!

Glad it is changing your mind. There is much to do in this little gem of a city.

One of the memorable castles near Dundee is Guthrie Castle. That is where my daughter got married and the two clans were were lodged for two days before the Highlands tour on a bus!

Guthrie castle is about 30 min from Dundee. I have not visited yet but will try to do so on my next trip there. Thank you so very much for mentioning it. I bet your daughters wedding was incredible. She sure picked the best country to get married in.

I think I’ve only heard once about this city, and, wow, this puts it on the map.

An excellent travel guide. I bet there’s nothing more comprehensive than it anywhere else.

Fantastic job, Jo!

Thank you Svet. Hoping it will help others who are looking to visit. The V&A is the main attraction at the moment but its nice to know all the other options. Plus it is a great spot to base yourself out of as it is less expensive than some of the surrounding cities and has great transportation options.

What an extensive article, thank you for adding so much to see and do in Dundee. Scotland isa place high on my travel list. I love visiting castles and definitely would love to visit Claypots Castle – and yes you are right it does look quirky. I think I would need at least 2 weeks to visit everything that you have included.

Scotland deserves at least 2 weeks and you could use Dundee as a base or explore it for a weekend. Hope you get to visit Dundee and Scotland soon.

For food I can heartily recommend ‘The Newport’ just across the river in Newport-on-Tay.

Chef/Proprietor Jamie Scott rightfully won Masterchef the Professionals in 2014, and his restaurant puts his talents on display. It’s Fine Dining, but at £55 for the tasting menu, it’s a bargain. We’ve been several times, and have been thoroughly impressed every time.

Also Jessie’s Kitchen in Broughty Ferry. Their food is straightforward, but delicious – soups, sandwiches etc. But the real star is their amazing range of cakes. Freshly made every day, and simply stunning.

Thank you so much for those restaurant recommendations. They both sound amazing. Will have to give them a try and hopefully formally add them as recommendations.

Dundee had never previously been on my hit list, but it does seem intriguing. It should certainly be quite vamped up by the £1 Billion redevelopment of its waterfront, would love to see what it looks like after all the work. Anywhere that has a magical castle is a winner to me

They are doing an incredible job and I agree anywhere with castles is a winner 🙂

Wow, you put Dundee into a very tempting perspective. I never thought of Dundee as a travel destination, but I guess I was wrong. There seems to be so much to see and do there. Thanks for recommending Malmaison. It’s always a plus when you know where to stay when visiting a city.

There is lots to see and do there and your hotel options are wonderful as well. Definitely give it a chance

Go watch the Dundee Stars professional ice hockey team, playing out of the Dundee Ice Arena.

Great family night out.

Check out dundeestars.com for fixtures and their next home game.

Ice hockey is always fun. Thanks for the idea.

Dundee is a new destination for me but seems like n exciting place through your blog. The prospects of being able to visit the castles around interests me the most. I do want to visit and experience all of these some day.

Castles are always great to visit and Scotland is filled with them. So you will definitely not lack for choice in that department. Hope you get to visit soon.

The views from Law and Magdalen Green are beautiful! This coastal city is very modern as well. The well-maintained castles are the places where travelers can easily spend hours around.

So many places to take in the view and lots of great green spaces to enjoy the outdoors. Hope you get to visit Scotland and Dundee soon.

Thank you for the lovely guide to Dundee. I can see why you left you heart in Scotland. I’ve never heard of this gem, and given all the accolades, it sounds like it is worth discovering. I love all the things to do and how easy it is to get around. Would definitively love to visit the city.

Its wonderful when a city is so walkable and has good public transport. I hope you get to visit and fall in love with Scotland as I did.

Thanks for writing such a detailed guide on Dundee. It is actually a place with a great location, art and architecture and land of innovation. The view from the cathedral top and the Law is breathtaking. The Palace too looks amazing. We would love spending some good no of days here.

The views from the Law are some of my favorite. You can see for miles on a clear day. Hope you get to visit Scotland and Dundee soon.

So the Malmaison kind of looked ho-hum from the outside for me but I actually wow-ed out loud when I saw the interior pics. What a great looking place to stay and even if you don’t stay there, a visit is a must! Darcee said she would love to see all the views from the top of St. Mary’s or St Paul’s Cathedral for sure. I love that Dundee seems to be a great walking around city too with so many cool shops like the record shop or the street art/statues. Definitely adding this to the Bucket List for our return to Scotland.

The Malmaison is fabulous chic place to stay. And getting up high for views is always a must. Scotland will be glad to welcome you back.

Thanks for the extremely detailed article about Dundee! I know of the place only in passing. I’m a fan of Castles and Claypots Castle sounds like a very interesting place. Scotland is on the list and I’ll refere back to your article when I finally get the chance to visit 🙂

Definitely visit Scotland and Dundee. I am sure you will love it

Dundee sounds interesting, especially its impact on the gaming industry. Love the architecture of the V&A museum. Plus a visit to Spex Pistols would be a must!

There is a whole of stuff to do there. However I will wait for the waterfront to get ready before visiting.

OMG… Castles Galore. That would be my single biggest reason to get here. Anything restricted always intrigues me and I can feel St. Mary’s Tower all out to me. Why are they restricted dates?

I am a big fan of castles and loved both Claypotts Castle and Dudhope castle. Good to know that there’s so much to see and do in Dundee city. I would love to spend atleast a week here. Great travel guide.

14 Cool Things to Do In Dundee

Cool things to do in dundee..

Things are changing in Dundee. There’s a palpable buzz in the air, and I couldn’t believe the difference on my recent visit! Here is my list of cool things to do in Dundee, including where to stay and where to eat.

This post contains affiliate links to experiences which I love, and may make a small commission from, at no extra cost to you.

Dundee’s waterfront is in the middle of a £1 Billion redevelopment, and everyone is talking about it. Affectionately known as the home of jam, jute and journalism, these industries will always be tightly woven into Dundee’s heritage and identity, as the city undergoes an exciting regeneration. Once overlooked as a tourist destination, Dundee has fast emerged as the cool kid in class, and this is only the beginning.

As Dundee develops and morphs into a modern butterfly, visitors are flocking from across the globe to experience it. From the new V&A Dundee and the city-wide surge in street art, to the flourishing food and drink scene, Dundee really is the place to be.

Honestly, I had expected the changes to be somewhat over-hyped, but I was wrong. Dundee really took me by surprise, and quickly stole the top spot for my favourite city break of 2018. There is so much that I love about this city, and there are lots of wee gems waiting to be discovered.

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

Things I love about Dundee:

  • It’s wee – Dundee is perfectly compact and easy to walk around. Most of the main sights are within close walking distance, which makes for a relaxed and leisurely city break. It also means that you’re never far from the River Tay.
  • It’s close – Dundee can be reached in just over an hour by train from Edinburgh, and its only 30 minutes by bus to adorable St Andrews .
  • It’s embracing chance – Local businesses and entrepreneurs are jumping on the spike in tourism, and locals are genuinely excited about the city’s transformation.
  • It’s unpretentious – Despite its sudden rise to fame, Dundee is totally down to earth, and so are its residents; it’s a city that’s not going to ‘forget where it came from’!
  • The accents – the local dialect and Dundonian tones are unlike any other. ‘Twa’, ‘awa’ and ‘teckle’. Need I say more?

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

What to Do in Dundee.

1) Visit the new V&A.

The eagerly anticipated V&A Dundee is at the heart of the all the hype, and has been the catalyst for many of the improvements around the city. Not only is it the first design museum in Scotland, it is the only other V&A museum outside of London in the world. The building is designed by famous Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, who will also be responsible for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic stadium. The striking contemporary design, which floods the interior with natural light and views of the Tay, is a symbol of the city’s developing waterfront. Kuma described the space as a “livingroom for the city”, and it is exactly that.

A design museum could be perceived as niche or intimidating, but the reality is far from it. You may think you’ve had little exposure to the industry, but design is everywhere and there is something for everyone at the V&A. In the Scottish Design Galleries – which is a permanent exhibition – visitors will find costumes from famous films, epic architecture on the Isle of Skye, the reconstructed Ingram Street Tearoom by Rennie Mackintosh , illustrated films, theatre sets and a truly stunning winged tiara.

‘Ocean Liners: Speed and Style’ is the museum’s debut temporary exhibition, and it’s so cool . Showcasing over 250 objects from collections around the world, the exhibition captures the opulence and extravagance around the romantic era of ocean travel; from the engineering of the ships and the interior design, to the highly fashionable garments worn aboard, and the graphic design of the iconic posters advertising the voyages.

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

  • The V&A also has an excellent café and restaurant, run by Heritage Portfolio. I had a most enjoyable coffee and managed to refrain from indulging in one of the seriously good-looking cakes. I won’t be so sensible next time!
  • Entry to the V&A Dundee is free, however there is a charge for the Cruise Liners Exhibition; £11 per adult and £7 per child
  • The museum has lockers and a ‘changing places’ toilet
  • There is no dedicated parking at the museum – even more incentive to travel by public transport!
  • For more information, visit the V&A Dundee website

2) Admire the street art.

OpenClose Dundee is a creative street art initiative which has brought a very welcome splash of colour to the doors of Dundee. Founded and run by PhD student Russell Pepper, OpenClose initially received funding for 6 doors, however thanks to support from local businesses, and artists volunteering to be involved, there are now 19 door murals on the city centre trail. My favourite mural is Dreamer by Sofia Sita (below) which is at the back of Dundee Contemporary Arts.

The project is an amazing, alternative way to draw in visitors and regenerate the city, while showcasing the talent of both local and international artists. Russell is now working on another project called Waste of Space, which will apply the same approach to the general waste and recycling bins on Perth Road. I’m excited to see the progress!

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

  • Visitors can self-guide around the trail – orbook a tour with Russell, which I highly recommend!
  • For more information on where to pick up maps or to book a tour, please visit the OpenClose website

3) Take a tour of The Vaults.

Who knew that Dundee had underground vaults? Having been on many a ghost tour in Edinburgh, I was intrigued by what DD Tours had to offer. Besties Louise and Stuart set up a website five years ago, purely as a place to document stories about Dundee, and as a resource for people to learn about the city’s less-than pleasant past. Soon they were receiving numerous requests for tours, and the rest is history!

Louise and Stuart deliver their tours in tandem – something I’ve not experienced on a walking tour before – and they work so well together; they have a comical camaraderie and they really know their stuff. They recently obtained access to the vaults at Custom Exchange, which they cleared out, made H&S compliant, and transformed into an eerie visitor experience. Our group made the descent in our super-stylish hard hats, and listened to entertaining tales of the darkest years in Dundee’s history. There are no theatrical frights or ghost stories on this tour; the real deal is disturbing enough, thank you.

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

  • DD Tours offer a range of tours including orientation walks of the city and the waterfront. You can view the tours and prices on the DD Tours website
  • My Dark Dundee – The Vaults tour cost £12 and lasted around 1 hour

4) Meander through the McManus.

The McManus Art Gallery and Museum is housed within a beautiful Victorian, Gothic-style building and is packed with exhibits which tell the story of Dundee’s history and heritage. Delve into the details of the once thriving jute industry, as well as Keiller’s marmalade, and D.C. Thomson’s famous publications. I discovered that Dundee also played a significant role in shipping, whaling and computing industries. Safe to say this city was a bit of an all-rounder!

On my most recent visit to the museum, there was an ‘McMenace’ exhibition (which closes on the 21st October 2018) in celebration of The Beano’s 80th birthday. The ‘Bring Bash Street Back’ slogan donned the fun and colourful exhibits which told the story of the nostalgic childhood comics. Just like the V&A, this is a free attraction and a perfect wet weather option.

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

  • Find out which exhibitions are currently displaying, on the McManus website
  • Check out the Beano 80th birthday visual timeline on the DC Thomson website

5) Browse the shelves in This Way Up.

I stumbled across this wee gem of a book & record shop on my wanderings along Dundee’s cute Perth Road area. Owners Ani and Matt used to run a pop-up shop in the George Orwell pub but decided to take the leap into their very own premises in September 2017, and they haven’t looked back.

The couple are members of the Alliance of Radical Booksellers, so the shelves are filled with a range of curated books covering everything from feminism and anti-racism, to travel and 20th century literature. They also have an eclectic selection of second-hand CDs, cassettes and vinyl. This Way Up gives you that reminiscent experience of browsing and handling your music and books before you buy; everything that Amazon does not.

Cool Things to Do Dundee

  • Check out This Way Up Facebook page or pop into the shop for a chat with the lovely Ani
  • There is another record store on Perth Road called Le Freak which I’m told also hosts in-store music events at weekends. You can check out their website for more info

Where to Stay in Dundee.

There are a number of new hotel developments springing up in Dundee to improve the city’s tourism offering, and ensure that all its lovely new visitors have a choice of places to stay. You search hotel availability for your trip to Dundee here , or read on for my top two recommendations on where to stay.

6) Stay in an old Jute Mill at Hotel Indigo.

Hotel Indigo Dundee opened in September 2018 after an eye-watering £32 million refurbishment. The strikingly tall building dates back to 1822, where it began its life as a linen factory, before switching it’s focus to jute manufacturing. The hotel is colourful and industrial, with numerous wee references to Dundee’s heritage; from jute and marmalade, to computer games and The Beano. I loved the exposed brickwork on the bedroom ceiling, the massive bathroom (with underfloor heating) and the custom-designed fabrics. The twin beds were much bigger than expected, and the breakfast was FABULOUS.

[envira-gallery id=”4860″]

  • I stayed in a twin room at Hotel Indigo in February 2019 on a B&B basis for £75 per night
  • Check prices and availability or book now

7) Go to sleep at Sleeperz Hotel.

Sleeperz is a shiny new hotel which sits above Dundee Railway Station, and is just a stone’s throw from the city’s blossoming waterfront. The vibrant and contemporary abode features 120 fully-equipped, modern bedrooms and a restaurant which serves breakfast and an all-day menu. The location was perfect for my sightseeing trip, my room overlooked The Discovery and the V&A Dundee, and I found all staff to be super-friendly. Yet another positive addition to Dundee’s tourism offering.

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

Foodie Things to Do in Dundee.

It’s time for this list to shine a spotlight on Dundee’s foodie scene. I was really impressed by the quality of the food on offer in Dundee, from restaurants and unassuming cafes, to a converted tram out on the street. Here are six tasty dishes to add to your list when visiting Dundee.

8) Go for pub grub at Tickety Boo’s.

Tickety Boos is a friendly pub right in the centre of Dundee on Commercial Street, and the unusual horseshoe-shaped bar is the first thing you see as you step inside the traditional interior. I visited Dundee with my Gran, and we perched in a wee booth, before browsing the menu which features plenty of ‘pub favourites’. We both ordered the Beer Battered Arbroath Haddock, which was served with chips, tartare sauce, fresh salad and homemade coleslaw. Such a satisfying scran!

Fish & chips with salad, tartare sauce, and homemade coleslaw

  • Our bill for 2 x Fish & Chips, a tea and a soft drink = £25
  • View the full food menu here

9) Pop in for a Padrino Pizza.

Padrino Pizza is a small, independent pizzeria in the centre of Dundee, which serves delicious Neapolitan pizza with a sourdough base and fresh toppings. I opted for a pizza with spicy Italian sausage and caramelised peppers, and a side of parmesan fries. The stone-baked oven had my pizza ready as quick as a flash, and the slices started disappearing into my mouth at the same speed. What I couldn’t manage was taken back to the hotel for later. The setting is casual, the food is great value, and the staff are lovely.

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

  • Pizzas start from £5
  • Check out the Padrino’s Pizza Facebook page for more information

10) Munch on Mince on Toast at The Bach.

It was here, in this trendy New Zealand-style café, on a drizzly midweek morning, that I discovered my new favourite brunch dish; mince on toast. It’s simple really – tasty chipotle chilli mince with a poached egg and hollandaise. Why didn’t I think of this before?! While I’d be tempted to order this again on my next visit, I will probably try something else on the menu as it all sounds amazing. The flat white was spot on too!

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

  • My coffee and mince on toast was £10.90
  • To view the full menu click here

11) Have a sober kebab at Agacan.

When scouting for Dundee restaurant recommendations on social media, Agacan just kept appearing. The Turkish restaurant is intimate and bursting with colour, from the painted tables and chairs, to the mosaics and artwork on the walls. On the recommendation of lovely waitress Lara, I went for the Iskender, which featured various meat kebabs with rice and fresh salad, all doused in garlic yoghurt and chili sauce. The portion was massive, and everything was delicious.

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

  • My main dish and soft drink came to £20.90
  • To view the full menu visit the Agacan website

12) Try a famous rainbow bagel at The Flame Tree Café.

A rainbow bagel is exactly what it sounds like, and I had to get involved in the novelty of it all. The bagels are made by a Jewish baker in London, before being transported up to Dundee, and they’re so popular, the café sells wee rainbow bagel badges as a tribute. Though it tastes exactly like a normal bagel, it just didn’t feel right ordering a savoury filling, so I went for peanut butter and jam. I also had a breakfast smoothie with banana, blueberries, oats, milk and honey. Yum!

Cool Things to Do Dundee

  • My breakfast smoothie and rainbow bagel was £6.35
  • Check out the Flame Tree Cafe Facebook page

13) Go old-school with breakfast at Tony’s Diner.

When it comes to foodie finds, ‘cool’ doesn’t have to mean ‘new’, and this humble establishment is as far away from ‘hipster’ as you can get. Tony’s Diner is a wee serving of café nostalgia, and reminds me of the kind of place my Gran would take me as a child. The current owners have had the café for 20 years and little has changed. It’s popular with workmen and locals, as well as visitors from areas around Dundee. The interior is a retro beige colour and a cup of tea is 90p. I loved the walk down memory lane, and my sliced sausage and egg roll.

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

  • Tony’s Diner is open Mon – Sat from 08.00 – 16.30

14) Order Stovies from the Auld Tram.

The Auld Tram is a unique city vendor offering street food with a historical twist. Comfort food and hot drinks are served from within a Dundee & District Tramways Horse Drawn Tram which would have been used in the 1870s. Much more than just a novelty, The Auld Tram is known for its quality food, as well as for being the sister restaurant to the award-winning Bridgeview Station (which is now on my list). I took a cup of stovies back to my hotel room, which obviously tasted even better because it was cold and raining outside.

Cool Things to Do in Dundee

  • My tasty cup of stovies was £2.50
  • Check out The Auld Tram Facebook page

How to Get to Dundee on Public Transport.

  • I travelled from Edinburgh to Dundee by train
  • The journey takes between 1 hour 10 minutes and 1 hour 30 minutes depending on which time you travel
  • Ticket prices start at £26 for an Off-Peak return (you might be able to grab even cheaper advanced purchase tickets)
  • If you prefer to travel by bus check out the Stagecoach x54 which takes just over 2 hours and costs £11.20 each way with a Fife Dayrider Plus ticket. You can view the timetable here

My trip to Dundee in 2018 was sponsored by Stagecoach East Scotland , and my dinner at Padrino Pizza was complimentary. As always, all content, opinions & chaotic behaviour are my own.

Happy travels, kay 💙, 6 thoughts on “14 cool things to do in dundee”.

Hello Kay, Thanks for the lovely article on Dundee. I was there two weeks ago to check out the V&A which I loved, but I did not know about the street art trail. Maybe next time… 🙂 Best regards from Germany, Tanja (Caledonia72)

Hi Tanja, Glad you enjoyed the post The street art is such a nice addition to the city – definitely check it out next time. Thanks, Kay

Padrino Pizza has been closed since May 2019. In its place, it’s now Wee Slice, which is just o-k. Not sure how it would compare with Padrino, though.

Hi Bella! Aw, it didn’t last very long. Thanks for letting me know. I’ll update my post 🙂

Hi Kay, a great positive review of Dundee, there is more of course, and it’s a shame you didn’t have a chance to check out the finest wee guided history and architecture tour in town, the ‘Bright Dundee’ wander around the Albert Square outside the McManus Galleries. Its a definite cool thing to do, maybe next time you’re passing through the area?

Hi George. I absolutely love Dundee, and I’ll definitely be back! Should I contact yourself to arrange the tour? 🙂

18 Reasons Why America Is No Longer the Greatest Country in the World

Posted: May 14, 2024 | Last updated: May 14, 2024

<p>Most Americans still believe that America is one of the greatest countries in the world, but it’s plagued by issues that threaten its reputation as “the shining city on the hill.” Polarization, eroding civil liberties, and deteriorating mental health are some of the 18 reasons why America may not be the greatest country in the world. </p>

Most Americans still believe that America is one of the greatest countries in the world, but it’s plagued by issues that threaten its reputation as “the shining city on the hill.” Polarization, eroding civil liberties, and deteriorating mental health are some of the 18 reasons why America may not be the greatest country in the world.

<p>Party affiliation also plays a role, with Republicans expressing mixed views on whether being a woman helps, hurts, or has no impact. In contrast, a majority of Democrats (68%) believe being a woman is a hindrance.</p>

Political Polarization

America has suffered from an increasingly polarized political landscape over the last decade, especially since the 2016 election, which has decreased bipartisan cooperation. There’s a decline in trust in political institutions and elected officials. The Pew Research Center reported last year that public trust in the federal government is “near record lows.”

<p>In America, things like roads, bridges, and pipes are getting old and not working well. This makes it harder to access day-to-day activities in some places. Everyone agrees that we need to fix these problems and spend money to make them better. However, we can’t seem to agree on the best way to do it. </p>

Deterioration of Infrastructure

America’s infrastructure, including roads, bridges, and public transportation, needs upgrades and repairs. The Biden administration has implemented billions of dollars of spending on infrastructure, but it is lagging behind America’s competitors, especially China. The recent collapse of the Key Bridge in Baltimore highlights infrastructure developed for smaller boats, trains, and vehicles.

<p>Most Democrats are in favor of diplomacy, seeing international cooperation as an essential tool in furthering the goals of Americans, as well as effectively addressing conflicts within other countries.</p>

Declining Global Influence

Other nations, notably China, challenge America’s dominance in global affairs and point to the country’s problems as a byproduct of dysfunctional democracy. America’s military interventions in the Middle East post-9/11 and its recent disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan have damaged its international reputation.

<p>Record temperatures were recorded across North America, reaching peaks of 100°F. The heatwave became a part of the Dust Bowl era, which, as the <a href="https://www.history.com/topics/great-depression/dust-bowl">History Channel</a> writes, “was the name given to the drought-stricken southern plains region of the United States, which suffered severe dust storms during a drought in the 1930s.”</p>

Environmental Degradation

America’s slow response to climate change and the skepticism of some Republicans threaten the global effort to combat rising temperatures. Urbanization and industrialization also threaten wildlife and biodiversity across the nation.

<p>The Second Amendment and the cultural importance of gun ownership are unique to America and are often perplexing to Europeans. According to <a href="https://www.governing.com/context/a-europeans-perspective-on-gun-violence-in-america">Governing</a>, “Europeans cannot understand our inability to control gun violence and how that makes them uncomfortable with America today.”</p>

Issues with Gun Control

America has a uniquely high rate of gun-related deaths compared to other developed countries. Suicides account for over half of these deaths, and the country struggles with school shootings more than any other country.

<p>American political campaigns spend billions on trying to get their presidential candidates elected. Other countries spend far less. In the UK, £460,000 was spent on Rishi Sunak’s 2022 leadership bid. <a href="https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-political-ad-spending-soar-2024-with-tv-media-biggest-winner-report-2024-01-11/">Reuters</a> reported in January that political advertising for this election year will likely be a third higher than in 2020, and TV media will again take a “lion’s share of the dollars.” </p>

Erosion of Civil Liberties

Brookings notes that the country is experiencing “two major forms of democratic erosion in its governing institutions: election manipulation and executive overreach.” Since 2010, American state legislatures have passed laws that aim to “reduce voters’ access to the ballot, politicize election administration,” and shut down electoral competition with extreme gerrymandering.

<p>Growth in the electric car market means new business opportunities are created, such as electric car dealerships and services. There would also be the development of new industries, as electric car parts would need to be created. Along with this, there would also be reduced healthcare costs that are linked to pollution.</p>

Challenges in Innovation and Technology

Other countries are leading in emerging technologies, including 5G and renewable energy. While America is at the forefront of the development of AI, regulatory and financial hurdles are impeding the growth of startups and innovation that will push the industry forward.

<p><a href="https://www.cbr.com/harry-potter-magical-families/">CBR</a> writes, “One of the most important aspects of this world is the wizard family tree, which includes dozens of important families and hundreds of iconic characters.” Rowling highlighted the significance of familial bonds in the books and how parents and ancestry can have an impact on a character.</p>

Social Fragmentation

Over the past decades, divides based on race, religion, and political ideology have grown among some Americans. The increasing trend of working from home has also led to a declining sense of community and increasing social isolation.

<p>Having emotional intelligence can greatly benefit students in their personal and academic lives. It empowers them to shine in an educational setting while navigating situations with ease as well as help them to manage stress, think critically, and improve their overall capabilities.</p>

Decline in Educational Standards

The Hill recently reported that hopes that K-12 math scores would rebound after plummeting during the COVID-19 pandemic “have proven vain.” They’re the “worst they’ve been since the 1970s.” America is lagging in STEM and data literacy rankings globally.

<p>Talking to older adults can be really tough if you are still mentally stuck in your younger days. When they talk about things like buying a house, having kids, or moving up in their jobs, you just can’t connect. It feels weird, and you’d much rather hang out with people your own age or younger who get why you love the things from your childhood so much.</p>

Deteriorating Mental Health

There has been an alarming increase in anxiety, depression, and suicide rates in America, with 50,000 Americans taking their lives in 2022. A lack of widespread access to affordable and effective mental health care, along with a persistent stigma, is hindering individuals from seeking help.

<p>The last opportunity that vendors have to sell you something is when you’re at the checkout. This is why checkout lines are always loaded with low-priced goods that tempt you to buy them while you’re standing in line waiting. Because they’re cheap, you don’t think twice before adding a couple to your basket.</p>

Consumerism and Materialism

High consumption levels have been shown to lead to unhappiness in the U.S. Due to the culture of consumerism, Americans are widely accepted as living in debt, which has led to environmental degradation from unsustainable consumption patterns.

<p>When examining the impact of gender on success, 67% of women assert that being a man at least somewhat helps in getting ahead, with 48% claiming it helps a lot. In contrast, 52% of men believe being a man aids their success, with 28% stating it helps a lot.</p>

Immigration Challenges

Immigration, particularly illegal immigration at the southern border, is a highly divisive issue in America. Challenges in integrating immigrants and avoiding a rise in xenophobia are significant issues, as is reforming immigration policies when Democrats and Republicans can’t reach an agreement.

<p>Instead of putting all of your money in one place, divide up your money into the amounts you will need for each expense category and put it in envelopes. When the money runs out in the envelope, you can’t spend any more. This system will ensure you always have enough for your bills.</p>

Rising Income Inequality

Over recent decades, the income disparity between the wealthiest and the poorest in America has grown significantly, as has the gap between poorer and richer areas. The U.S. Department of Commerce reported last year that “geographic income inequality has risen more than 40% between 1980 and 2021.”

<p>When education systems are underfunded, the quality of teaching and learning resources significantly drops. Many schools lack the necessary funds to provide teachers with adequate teaching materials and training. The <a href="https://tcf.org/content/about-tcf/tcf-study-finds-u-s-schools-underfunded-nearly-150-billion-annually/#:~:text=The%20United%20States%20is%20underfunding,The%20Century%20Foundation%20(TCF).">Century Foundation</a> says that “the United States is underfunding its K-12 public schools by nearly $150 billion annually, robbing more than 30 million school children of the resources they need to succeed in the classroom.”</p>

Education System Inequities

Unequal access to quality education for students in poorer, marginalized communities, particularly in inner-city areas, is a significant problem in America. Persistent underfunding of these schools and disputes over curriculum content also reflect broader cultural wars.

<p>Widespread addiction to opioids has plagued America since the 1990s, and today, deaths from overdose are among the leading causes of injury-related casualties in the country. Aggressive marketing of opioids by pharmaceutical companies in the 1990s led to thousands of deaths and lives ruined by addiction. The rise of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, over the past decade, with imports from China and Mexico, has compounded the problem. </p>

The Opioid Crisis

Widespread addiction to opioids has plagued America since the 1990s, and today, deaths from overdose are among the leading causes of injury-related casualties in the country. Aggressive marketing of opioids by pharmaceutical companies in the 1990s led to thousands of deaths and lives ruined by addiction. The rise of fentanyl, a synthetic opioid, over the past decade, with imports from China and Mexico, has compounded the problem.

<p>While the U.S. does have a significant private healthcare sector, there are public healthcare programs like Medicare and Medicaid. The system is a mix of public and private services, and while it has its challenges, it’s not exclusively privatized.</p>

Erosion of Healthcare Quality

Despite high spending, the American healthcare system isn’t known for being the most effective and struggles with significant administrative overheads. KFF notes that in “2022, 25.6 million nonelderly individuals were uninsured,” primarily “because the cost of coverage was too high.”

<p>There are also concerns that the national debt is increasing when the economy is performing well, with low unemployment, which is regarded as a good time to rein in the federal deficit. The government regularly increases spending during weaker economic periods and high unemployment to stimulate growth.</p>

Economic Vulnerabilities

America’s persistent trade deficits with key global partners and adversaries, as well as a growing national debt and concerns over fiscal sustainability over the past decade, have led some to worry about economic vulnerability. However, the economy is doing well, with low unemployment levels, rising wages, and inflation falling.

<p>Unlike the 24/7 programming of modern television, sign-offs were a reminder of the finite nature of broadcast media in the boomer generation. TV channels signing off late at night marked the end of broadcasting for the night, accompanied by national anthems or serene imagery. This practice fostered a sense of closure and routine now lost.</p>

Media Polarization

Over the past few decades, there has been increasing polarization within the media, with news outlets devoting more airtime to opinion shows catering to specific ideological audiences. The news media in America plays a significant role in shaping political views and is partly responsible for the polarized political climate.
