These Are The Sickest Custom Rides From The Grand Tour

Leaving Top Gear didn't stop the famous trio from making even more wild and ludicrous custom creations to keep the fans guessing.

Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. These three gentlemen are single-handedly (in this case, six-handedly) responsible for bringing the auto industry and car culture to new heights of popularity. We bet many people started watching Top Gear for the humor and satire and ended up becoming gearheads. But when their stint on Top Gear came to a sudden end because of some physical alterations between Jeremy and a producer of the show , Clarkson and his two mates got an offer from Amazon and the world got blessed with The Grand Tour .

After the trio left Top Gear , The Grand Tour was arguably the next best thing. And just like their previous show, the three hosts did not hold back on satirical stunts and their classic buffoonery. Hence, we got to see a lot of challenges, road trips, and special episodes over the course of 4 seasons so far. Everyone knows that with challenges and road trips come modified cars. Some of them are weird and great, some of them are just weird, but a few of them are simply next level. So we went through all of them and found 10 of the best and coolest ones.

9 Jeremy's V8-Powered Beach Buggy

The boys went to Namibia on a crazy journey through the Namib desert in search of a road. Their starting point was a spot where the desert meets the South Atlantic Ocean. It’s fitting that a car from the first Special episode of the show starts off this list as well.

The boys brought their own beach buggies, but Jeremy clearly wasn’t happy with the stock power of a VW Beetle buggy. So we got to see what happens when a tiny little buggy gets a big ol’ V8 strapped to its back. If we had to guess, Jeremy’s reason behind it was “ SPEED AND POWER!!! ”

8 James May's American Road Trip RV

The three hosts went on an RV camping trip across the US in a stock RV in a typical fashion. And they got bored with it pretty early on and got their own custom RVs, again in typical fashion. When we say customizing the RV suited to our own needs, James May seems to have taken things ‌seriously.

This man fitted an entire pub inside his RV, complete with dart boards and cheesy wall posters. Just imagine going on a road trip all day long and then camping in the wilderness in the middle of nowhere and having a drink of your choice in peace and quiet.

7 Richard Hammond's Living Car Aka The Tree-T-I

The fourth episode of the first season of The Grand Tour saw the three hosts try and build a car from a Land Rover Discovery chassis and sustainable materials from nature. “Well, what’s more sustainable and green than actual plants?” asked Richard.

So he made the entire outer body of his car from plants, bamboo, shrubs, and even a few flowers! Before the episode ends, Hammond’s car was so sustainable that a little hedgehog hopped in and started living in the car!

6 The Excellent

In the last several years, more and more people are buying SUVs than ever before. But they tend to justifiably cost a lot more than sedans and hatchbacks. That's why Jeremy decided to make his own version of a modern SUV. For that, he took the underpinnings and chassis of a Land Rover Discovery and merged it with the outer body of a 1978 MGB Roadster.

It was a catastrophic failure, so he chose the ‘80s Mercedes-Benz SL which was a better fit on the DIscovery than the MG. And the result was something that Jeremy would call ‘The Excellent’ while his two mates would call rubbish. Now it’s up to you to decide which team you are on.

5 Jeremy's 'The Flying Bridge'

Whenever the hosts do a special in the US, we know we are in for a show. James’ Pub RV was not the only wonky-but-sick ride in the show. Jeremy Clarkson wanted to get a feel of one of those luxury yachts while on this trip.

So he took a page out of Mr. Bean’s page and added the controls to his RV to the top. As goofy as it sounds, the thing actually works and looks magnificent while doing it. Until the brakes failed, the throttle got stuck, and his two mates had to attempt to do a pincer grasp on his RV to get it to stop.

4 Richard Hammond's Modified Ford Focus

The Grand Tour ’s Madagascar special ‘A Massive Hunt’ may have gotten semi-decent reviews on IMDB. But, the vehicles they use in it are some of the best and most popular. While James May’s Caterham was sick, it wasn’t modified enough to be on this list.

But Richard, on the other hand, changed one of the most fundamental things of his car—the wheels. Hammond’s new modified Ford Focus now sported a full-on pirate look. It now had caterpillar tracks to endure the harsh roads of Madagascar.

3 The Road-Legal Amphibious Car

The challenge was to break an amphibious speed record. So they needed a car that could run on roads and sail on water. Obviously, Jeremy decided to use the jet engine of a Maritime patrol aircraft. The idea was to merge a Russian jet engine, a small boat, and an old Suzuki Jimny. The result was extravagant!

But it was also a failure. So they made another one. This time, they got a Bond Bug , replaced the wheels with those retractable ones, and gave it a jet-ski engine...and that result was also pretty bold and out there.

2 Jeremy's 'The MFB'

The MFB is undoubtedly one of the most remembered cars from the entire series. Jeremy chose the Bentley Continental GT for his Madagascar treasure hunt. When the smooth asphalt ended and the gravel, mud, and grit kicked in, the Bentley evolved.

It had (get ready...) skid plates, snorkels, a winch at the front, armor-plated steel running across the underside, a motorcycle’s headlamps, an external roll cage, Golf GTI brakes, bigger tires, replaced fenders, and rally lights on the top.

John is THE sickest custom ride in The Grand Tour. It’s also least like any factory-rolled stock car because it’s completely self-constructed by the three hosts in the Gobi Desert. The trio was in the middle of nowhere in the Gobi Desert, and their only ray of hope was the car they built.

For six days, John went through every obstacle the untamed desert had to offer and carried the boys to the nearest place of civilization, which was a town with a funny name. In simple terms, John went through hell and brought the boys to humanity, both literally and metaphorically.

Remembering The Grand Tour’s Caribbean Getaway

“Under the shimmering blue sea, there’s just miles and miles of sand.” Jeremy Clarkson’s intro to The Grand Tour’s “Dumb Fight at the O.K. Coral” episode will make you miss Summer vacation.

It is, after all, our boy’s best beach episode.

The operation has Jeremy, James, and Richard trying to save the coral reefs, by sinking cars down to the sea floor. Not only does the mission have an honorable goal , but it also means our hosts sport shorts, and even the occasional bit of diving gear.

While they set off with five stripped-down cars to seed the newest reef, they quickly lose some of their resources, as May proves himself utterly incapable of operating a crane. Later, Clarkson also shows how poor of a boat captain he would make, a couple of years before Seamen aired .

The spot has multiple stressful moments, first we see Clarkson walking around completely barefoot on the dock; enough to make a grown man cry. We have to stand by as they repeatedly snap towing lines, struggle to get a boat to dock properly , and get kicked off a resort’s beach.

O.K. Coral has several fantastic moments of chemistry. Right from the beginning they quickly hurry their intro to compensate for a lost car, all the way to the bickering about 1st or 2nd gen Land Rover.

It’s a hot mess, in a tropical paradise.

No doubt, a vacation would be so welcomed right now, even with all the road bumps and sunburn we’d surely endure if we were hosts of The Grand Tour .

We Don't Know Why, but The Grand Tour Built A Wooden Land Rover

It's definitely one way to demonstrate the benefits of an honest ladder frame.

In the second year of the Series 1 Land Rover, the company launched a wooden-framed seven-seater simply called the Station Wagon. Land Rover sent its chassis to Tickford, a coachbuilder who knew a fair bit about how work with wood. Yet the final product looked nothing like what you see above.

One of those vehicles appears to be a Land Rover chassis with a body made entirely of wood. Is that heavier than the original aluminum? Perhaps. But not having doors or any glass must help. And is wood a greener alternative to Bauxite mining? Certainly.

Talk about a totally ridiculous health & safety risk , though.

What's New for 2022?

The all-new 2022 Range Rover—not to be confused with the outgoing model, which is also a 2022—is redesigned from the ground up with updated styling, new tech features, and luxury touches. A more luxurious and highly-customizable SV trim will join the lineup for the 2023 model year. The outgoing-generation Range Rover, which is also a 2022 model and on sale for the time being, receives few changes for 2022. The diesel V-6 and plug-in-hybrid P400e models have been discontinued from the new Range Rover lineup, leaving the turbocharged inline-six and the supercharged V-8 as the only powertrain options. Buyers can now also add a more robust cabin air-ionization system as well.

Pricing and Which One to Buy

The price of the 2022 Land Rover Range Rover starts at $95,150 and goes up to $159,550 depending on the trim and options.

We'd recommend opting for the mid-range Autobiography model, which adds several sought-after items that luxury buyers will appreciate. For example, the Autobiography comes standard with a 1600-watt Meridian stereo system featuring headrest-mounted speakers and active noise cancellation. The new Range Rover will be offered in both short- and long-wheelbase body styles; we suggest going for the latter since it creates room for a third row of seats and provides a more generous cargo area.

Engine, Transmission, and Performance

At launch, the new Range Rover will be available with a trio of powertrains, starting with a turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt hybrid system dubbed P400 that develops 395 horsepower. During our initial test drive, it proved to be silky-smooth and provided adequate pep to tug the large Range Rover around. A 523-hp twin-turbo 4.4-liter V-8 engine—Land Rover calls it P530—is even perkier and cranks up the Range Rover's towing capacity to 8200 pounds. At our test track, the P530 hustled the Range Rover to 60 mph in 4.3 seconds; the P400 did it in 5.5 seconds. Land Rover says a 434-hp plug-in hybrid option will join the lineup for 2023 and will offer up to 48 miles of electric-only driving; an all-electric model will be available starting in 2024. The new Range Rover's ride is suitably plush and, with its adjustable air suspension set to Comfort mode, it virtually floats down the road. Turning the dial to Dynamic mode firms things up some, but the big Rover still aims for a comfort-first mission. Meanwhile, the outgoing Range Rover, which buyers may still find lurking on a few dealers’ lots, might be a relative bargain.

Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG

The entry-level P400 is rated for 18 mpg city and 26 mpg highway while the V-8­–powered P530 has earned 16 mpg city and 21 mpg highway estimates. When we have a chance, we'll test the Range Rover on our 75-mph highway fuel economy route and update this story with details. Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

As with past generations of the Range Rover, the new generation model offers a plush interior decked out with rich leathers and woods, but buyers who want a more sustainable cabin can now opt for a new leather-free option, which subs-in wool or other textiles. The interior can be arranged to seat four, five, or seven depending on configuration and wheelbase. The third row, even in long-wheelbase trims, may not fit tall adults as the headroom there is somewhat limited, but shorter riders and kids will find it nearly as comfortable as the second row. An optional motorized divider for the cargo area helps keep things from moving around too much during travel, and the Range Rover's split rear liftgate can be used as convenient and comfortable seating for outdoor events.

Infotainment and Connectivity

All versions of the new Range Rover receive a new 13.1-inch curved infotainment display with Land Rover's latest Pivi Pro interface. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard and the system also receives Amazon's Alexa voice assistant. Other standard features include in-dash navigation, wireless smartphone charging, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 13.7-inch digital gauge display. A rear-seat entertainment system with dual 11.4-inch displays is available, as is a Meridian stereo system with 35 speakers.

Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

Land Rover offers a host of modern driver-assistance features as standard on the Range Rover, including adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist. For more information about the Range Rover's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration ( NHTSA ) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety ( IIHS ) websites. Key safety features include:

The Range Rover's warranty coverage mostly matches up with the offerings of its luxury competitors, but it doesn't include complimentary scheduled maintenance. Competitors such as the BMW X7 and Black Label versions of the Lincoln Navigator both include extended periods of complimentary scheduled maintenance in the purchase price.
