What is the first thing that comes to your mind when you think of Irhsalgad trek ? I know you will say that the fort which is visible & noticeable from Mumbai-Pune highway both old one & expressway due to its unique shape. Since my childhood i was always puzzled to see an oddly shaped rock from the highway. It was only during my college days that i realised that its an actual fort with a nedhe ( needle hole rock ) & from then onwards I have been here many times for small hikes. In this Irshalgad Trek blog you will get all the necessary information to do this trek easily. More adventures like this one at the end of the post.

How to Reach Irshalgad from Mumbai & Pune ?

Where is Irshalgad fort located? Irshalgad lies in the Khalapur Taluka of Raigad Maharashtra. It is surrounded by Morbe dam, Matheran range & Prabalgad range of mountains. Irshalgad is 20kms from Panvel, 60kms from Mumbai & 100ksm from Pune. The base village for Irshalgad is Nanivali & Chowk is the closest big city.

By Train to Chowk: Chowk railway station is the nearest station for this trek. If you can reach Chowk station then you dont need any extra transport for this trek However there are very few trains which stop here. As such Panvel & Karjat station become the nearest stations. From where you will need to take local transport to reach Chowk for Irshalgad

By road to Chowk: From Panvel one can easily get on a ST bus / EECO rickshaw to Karjat , Khopoli & get down at Chowk Village on highway. ( Locations – Panvel Bus Stand & Panvel Rickshaw Sta nd ) From Karjat Station you can get on a ST bus / EECO rickshaw going towards Dand- Phata , Panvel & get down at Chowk village on highway. ( Karjat Bus stand & Rickshaw stand )

Form Chowk to Nanivali: Once at Chowk or Chowk Station , you will need to walk to Nanivali village for some 20 minutes if you dont get small rickshaws available at Chowk road. If you have you own vehicle you can reach Nanivali directly on a proper tar road. You can also stop at Morbe dam just before Nanivali for some fresh air.

Is Irshalgad difficult trek for beginners ? Is guide needed for Irshalgad trek ?

Niraj, what is the difficulty level of Irshalgad? This is an easy level trek till the Irshalgad base with straight forward trail. You wont loose the track . However the climb from the base to the Irshalgad Nedhe ( needle hole ) is a bit tough and not recommended for beginners , family or people having fear of heights. This rock pack is almost vertical at 2 locations where villagers have tied up ladders & ropes for assistance. So would be better if you do this part with some experienced trekker who can help you in the climb. This rock climb gets even tougher during monsoon when rocks become slippery. If you can manage these spots then you are at the top.

At the top there is one pinnacle with a flag on it which is not attempted by regular trekkers. It is purely technical and should not be attempted without mountaineering expertise.

How long is the Irshalgad trek?

Niraj, how much time does Irshalgad trek take ? It takes about 2 hours to reach the top for a good trekker from Nanivali village.

What is the best time for Irshalgad Trek ?

All sahyadri treks are beautiful in monsoon. Irshalgad looks stunning with all the greenery & clouds. The top part climb to needle hole where the ladders are tied may become a bit slippery in monsoon. Apart from that its fantastic. Winter is also a good time as it provides excellent views of Morbe during sunrise & sunset. Many people prefer it for camping.

Khane me kya hai ?

There are few hotels near Chowk highway, then nothing till Irshalwadi which is at the base of the fort where new hotels are coming up. However on weekends especially in monsoon there are many make shift food huts which have cropped up throughout the trek route after every 10 minutes right till top of the fort where you will get snacks & even pre – ordered food. Bro-tip: You can have your snacks here & order your lunch which you can have on the way back. Remember these huts are only functional on weekends. If nothing works you can always order at Irshalwadi which have started few hotels.

There are two water tanks where drinkable water is available even till mid of summer. Water bottles would be available at the huts as well. But I avoid buying any plastic related items on treks. I dont even buy maggi and go for local food & breakfast which wont leave any plastic trail. Save Earth.

Camping & Stay at Irshalgad

Winter provides beautiful sunrise & sunsets . hence many people prefer camping here. Just before the rocky climb starts there is flat area which is a good area for camping. I remember seeing a few ads at Irshalwadi where tents were provided on rent- but i will need to double check it

Irshalgad trek blog : My story

This Irshalgad trek blog would combine the photos from my two visits here in monsoon and summer from 2022 & 2015 respectively as the clouds didnt allow proper photography. That is this blog is in the making for 7 years ; take that Brahmastra & Avatar 😁Ideally this trek should take 90 minutes to climb from trek start @Nanivali over the ridge to the plateau & Irshalwadi. And another 60 minutes from Irshalwadi to the top. These times are inclusive of photography but exclusive of reels which take forever to shoot.

I am a regular at Morbe dam where I sit on rocks and just look at the shimmering water for hours during sunset. On trek day i didnt stop here and headed straight to Nanivali where i parked my bike and started the Irshalgad trek. During monsoon the entire region is rife with greenery and makes for a peaceful sahyadri trek.

Irshalgad trek base village Nanivali

The initial walk continues till the ridge from where the actual climbing starts. Once on the ridge as we gain height the Morbe dam becomes visible and can act as a wonderful backdrop for photos. Early morning photography got me excited

After climbing for a few more minutes even the dams on the other side becomes visible. I moved quickly through this ridge in monsoon. But i remember in summer when i had miscalculated time and reached here under the hot sun i was totally drained of my energy during the ridge climb. Lesson learned- Summer treks should be started early morning

Morbe dam from Irshalgad

It took me an hour to complete the climb and reach the plateau from where the fort started to be clearly visible. A dog also followed me to top . Too bad i didnt have any food for that dude.

Irshalgad hidden in clouds

As it was cloudy darkness took over too early and I had to increase my speed to reach Irshalgad peak . I rushed towards Irshalwadi and from there moved on to the actual fort without any stops. I covered this part quickly as it was just a flat walk & i ran most of the portion to make up some time.

How to get time & money to travel ?

The most common question that i get asked is I want to travel a lot but I dont have leaves. Only way possible is the find a source of income which will be flexible enough to allow you to travel anywhere. In search of this source of income I tried freelancing , trek leading, vlogging and I realised nothing works in the long term. After trying out many things finally I came across trading. If you can learn trading you can earn from anywhere around the world.

You can earn from anywhere around the world be it some village in Himachal or Meghalaya, be it some island in Andaman. All you need is an internet connection and a trading account. You can earn by trading for 1-2 hrs a day and would have freedom to do anything in the free time.Or you might have just earned enough in a day to take the month off travelling around the world. If you are able to learn this then it has potential to make all your dreams come true. I would suggest you take it up as a side project for 6 months to see if you have patience & intellect to master it. Once you learn it, all you need is to open a free account and a mobile to trade from & travel anywhere in the world.

Irshalgad hidden in clouds

I did see few advertisements for trekking camps & stays available in Irshalwadi. I crossed the temple after which there is well marked right turn from where starts a small climb to the top. By now the clouds had taken over the fort and visibility was becoming an issue for photography

Clouds at Irshalgad

I tried to hide these food huts in my photos but they are built too close to be hidden from the view. Prima facie i hate this development where the natural view is blocked. But then its someone’s bread and butter. Morever a hot chai at top would be very desirable on cold monsoon days like this. Only if it was a weekend i would have got something hot to eat. But since i hate crowds I have started to trek on weekdays. Hence no hot tea for me.

From the above view one has to walk from the left side through the rocky walls of Irshalgad to reach the rock climbing part which beginners might find difficult to negotiate.

Route to Irshalgad

Walking parallel to these mighty rocky walls we reach the rock climbing part. In monsoon this becomes slippery and extra care should be taken here – photos should be avoided as its a major distraction. I didnt take any pics here as it was getting very dark. I was worried without photos how can i complete my Irshalgad trek blog but then I remembered summer 2015 Irsahlgad trek which i did in broad day light. Here are some pics from that summer trek. The climb starts near a water tank where a ladder & couple of ropes are tied by villagers to assist the climb.

Irshalgad Trek Blog - ladder - shidi

There is another longer ladder above this after which we reach the Irshalgad’s famous Nedhe ( Needle hole ) Needle holes are formed by years of rock erosion by wind. Just like waterfalls cut through rocks & soften their edges similarly wind can cut through rocks after many years. That is the power of nature & consistency. There are many Nedhe’s in Sahyadris most notable one being at Ratangad near Kasara.

Irshalgad Trek Blog - needle hole - Irshalgad nedhe

Once at the Nedhe the trek is almost complete and one can move around the fort to see another water tank and enjoy the view of Morbe dam. There are no major things to see at the fort as it was just used to keep an eye on enemies moving in the near by areas and was not a proper fort per se.

Both the times the weather was cloudy i.e I couldn’t enjoy the view. On clearer days many forts are visible from Irshalgad namely Peb, Matheran, Rajmachi , Songiri , Manikgad , Karnala , Prabalgad , Kalavatin

irshalgad trek blog

As the view was not clear i felt something was missing & the trek felt incomplete. While looking around i felt that the pinnacle above the Nedhe was doable and without any second thought reached the top.

These pinnacles should not be climbed without technical expertise. I have enough mountaineering experience to have climbed here, but it was still an idiotic on my part to do so. From this pinnacle the flag pinnacle in front also looked very tough but i dont no what I was thinking as i decided to climb it as well.

Trading allows earning on the go, providing income and freedom to travel anywhere in the world without worrying about leaves or money. Just open a free account, learn trading & you are set.

THESE CLIMBS SHOULD NOT BE ATTEMPTED WITHOUT TECHNICAL EXPERTISE .

Irshalgad trek blog - rock climbing

That time i didnt have much knowledge about mountaineering and just climbed the pinnacle without any safety gear which was plain idiotic. This pinnacle should only be climbed with ropes and proper technical guidance

While climbing to the top i had a massive adrenaline pump ..Isse mujhe kick milti hai. The weather cleared as well. I spotted Peb , Matheran, Rajmachi , Songiri , Manikgad , Karnala , Prabalgad , Kalavantin . Too bad i didnt carry my camera up there. After getting down i sat down in the shadow of the same pinnacle. I wondered if I really climbed it.

In 2024 when i saw this pinnacle again I still wonder what made me climb it then. Youthful exuberance perhaps !

Irshalgad Trek: The Perfect Trek near Mumbai for Beginners

irshalgad trek blog

  • posted on February 19, 2020 April 26, 2021

Adventure Pulse Irshalgad pinnacle

While driving from Pune to Mumbai, near Panvel, if you look to the right you can see a pinnacle, a vertical, pointed piece of rock. This is Irshalgad which translates to Pinnacle Fort (‘Irshal’ means Pinnacle and ‘Gad’ means fort.). Irshalgad fort is accessed through a beautiful trek known as the Irshalgad Trek.

Adventure Pulse Irshalgad pinnacle

Would I be able to do the Irshalgad Trek?

Irshalgad trek is perfect for beginners. The trek is steep but is manageable even for beginners. We use this trek to introduce kids to the outdoors. However, in the rains, the terrain can get slippery and we would not recommend an attempt at going on the pinnacle.

How do I get there?

Located around 90km from Pune and 60km from Mumbai,  Irshalgad Fort is accessible through the Expressway. You make your way to Mumbai (Starting from Pune) and turn off before the Khopoli Toll plaza. After which you follow the road turning under the expressway and make your way to the base village of the trek: Nanhivali base village. This quaint village is located on the banks of the reservoir of the Morbe Dam. It is pretty easy to find on Google Maps. If you wish you can take a train to Karjat and head to the base from here.

The trek to Irshalgad fort begins with a climb. A 20-minute climb with a couple of steep sections gets you to the first rest stop. From here you get a good glimpse of the reservoir and the surrounding areas. There is also a small shack where you can buy some snacks. After reaching this point the trail is flatter and continues for about 10 more minutes before flattening pretty much completely. This trail leads to the village on the hill: Irshalwadi. The trail from here continues through the forest and follows a muddy route. After about 10 minutes the trails bends towards the right and regains its gradient. As you approach the top the trail is pretty steep and slippery if you are trekking in the monsoons.

This leads to the base of the pinnacle and from here you can truly appreciate the scale of this behemoth. A truly majestic rock structure.

To make your way to the top, you first have to head towards the right of the pinnacle. Then follow the route as it makes its way through some rockfall and up a small ladder. Here you can find a small temple, this is the top of the Irshalgad Trek. From the summit, you get a clear view of other majestic forts like Prabalgad, Matheran and Manikgad. The trek back follows the same route.

In total it took us 2 hours to get to the top and 1 hour to get back down. During the rain, the trail can get slippery and we would recommend wearing shoes with a good grip. Also, we would not recommend going to the top of the pinnacle if you are not feeling confident and in the rain as the rocks are very slippery.

Best Time to Visit Irshalgad Fort

Adventure Pulse Irshalgad Trek Morbe Dam

Like most of the treks around Pune, the best time to go for the Irshalgad trek is in the Monsoons and Post-Monsoon. The weather is not too hot and you get to see the amazing greenery of the land. During the monsoon, the land is green and the reservoir is full; a sight you must see. When we had gone the pinnacle was covered in clouds for the first half of the trek and opened up only later during the day, a sight to revel at.

Can You Help Us With Photographs Of This Trek?

The Complete Guide to Irshalgad Trek

Standing tall besides the Matheran hill station, Irshalgad is an iconic boat-shaped hill that is easily distinguishable from afar.

Connected to the more popular Prabalgad fort by a rarely used ridge, it can be approached from three different trails of varying difficulty.

The climb to the peak can be divided into three phases: The base of the pinnacle, the Needle hole and the final, technical push to the peak. As a DIY trek, we only recommend going upto the second level, as the final stretch is especially treacherous and has been the cause for a couple of unfortunate casualties

How to Get Fit for the Trek

The Irshalgad trek is classified as a  Moderate grade trek . From Chowk at 130 feet, you will gain approximately 1,600 feet in altitude. Though the altitude gain is not much, the continuous ascent can be quite demanding for people who lead a sedentary lifestyle.

Training yourself for a low-altitude Moderate grade trek

Here’s a guide to help you get fit for the trek in 4 weeks.

Cardiovascular endurance.

In case you’re just starting with a fitness routine, start slow and increase your pace everyday in the following manner –

  • Target completing a brisk walk of 5 km in 45 minutes when you begin.
  • Gradually increase your pace by walking 5 km, 4 times a week.
  • As you become more comfortable, introduce jogging in your routine.
  • Progressively increase the distance you jog in a workout until you can complete 5 km in 40 mins.

If you prefer cycling over running, target covering 15 km in 60 minutes when you begin.

  • Progressively increase your pace to cover 18 km in one hour.

Strength training

This is an important area you need to work on.

Strength training is equally important to trek comfortably. Work on your glutes, calves and knees. Additionally, work on strengthening your core.

You must strengthen your core muscles. For strengthening your core muscles, holding a plank and it’s variations (elbow, side planks) are the best exercises to go about doing it.

Also try these exercises for strength-

Target 4 sets of squats with 20 in each set

– Squats (Mix it up with sumo squats)

– Lunges (Forward, backward and lateral lunges)

Flexibility

Flexibility determines the amount of movement your bones can make in any direction around joints such as shoulders, elbows, hips and knees.

It is an aspect that will help you trek comfortably. Carrying a backpack, however light, can become a strain. Stretching your hamstrings, quadriceps, hip flexors and lower back muscles regularly, promotes relaxation in the tissues reducing the strain on your back.

If you can’t go out and jog because of time and space constraints,  here’s a video  you can use to work out indoors.

Irshalgad Trek - A Monsoon Adventure Amidst History and Nature's Embrace

As the monsoon rain poured down, I embarked on an exciting journey to Irshalgad, a trekking paradise nestled in the Sahyadri mountains of Maharashtra. The lush greenery beckoned, and the allure of exploring the historical remnants of Shivaji Maharaj's reign awaited. As I began my journey to Irshalgad , raindrops descended from the sky, casting a magical aura over the landscape. I knew that experiencing Irshalgad in the monsoon season would be an adventure unlike any other. With my rain jacket donned and backpack protected, I stepped out into the downpour, embracing the rainy arrival. The earthy scent of wet soil filled the air, and the gentle mist veiled the mountains, heightening my anticipation.

The monsoon had transformed Irshalgad into a vibrant paradise, breathing life into every leaf and flower. The landscape seemed to come alive, welcoming me with open arms. The rain-enhanced trails presented their own set of challenges, as the path became muddy and slippery. But I embraced the adventure wholeheartedly, relishing the exhilaration of navigating the rain-soaked terrain. The raindrops drenched me, revitalizing my spirits and igniting a childlike joy within.

The rain seemed to breathe life into the flora and fauna that flourished in Irshalgad. The chirping of birds echoed through the misty air, serenading me with their melodies. As I trod the trails, I marvelled at the variety of plant life that surrounded me. The forest floor was carpeted with ferns,   moss and lichens, creating a mystical atmosphere.

With every step, I immersed myself in the monsoon's dance, surrendering to the whims of the rain and finding solace in its embrace. The rainy arrival had transformed my journey into a mystical adventure, where I connected with the raw, untamed beauty of nature.

As I embark on the Irshalgad trek, I can't help but feel a deep connection to Shivaji Maharaj, the legendary Maratha warrior king. This connection stems from the historical significance of Irshalgad as one of the forts fortified by Shivaji Maharaj during his reign.   Walking the trails and scaling the rocky terrain, I imagine Shivaji Maharaj and his brave warriors traversing these same paths centuries ago. It fills me with awe and wonder to think that I am retracing the footsteps of a great leader who fought for the prosperity and unity of his kingdom.

Conquering the Rocky Trails in Irshalgad

As I set foot on the rocky trails of Irshalgad, an exhilarating sense of adventure surged through my veins. R opes and ladders became my allies, assisting me in ascending the challenging slopes.

The trail unfolds before me, demanding focus and determination. The thrill of clinging to the ropes and carefully placing my feet on the footholds intensified the sense of accomplishment with every inch gained.   With each step, I confronted the challenges that nature had set before me.   The rocky trails appeared as a formidable adversary, testing my physical and mental endurance . With each step forward, I draw closer to the summit, fueled by the sheer thrill of conquering nature's obstacles.

Reaching the Irshalgad summit, I felt a deep connection with the vastness of the universe. I stood triumphantly, gazing at the world below from my lofty vantage point. From this height, the worries and stresses of everyday life seemed insignificant. This trek provides an opportunity to pay homage to Shivaji Maharaj's enduring legacy. His unwavering commitment to justice, his military prowess, and his love for his motherland are qualities that resonate within me. I am reminded of the power of our heritage and the influence of those who have shaped our history.

Conquering Irshalgad's rocky trails taught me that life's challenges are not to be feared but embraced.  The trek became a metaphor for my personal journey, inspiring me to step outside my comfort zone, conquer fears, and embrace the unknown . The flora and fauna at Irshalgad added depth and richness to my trekking experience. They reminded me of the importance of preserving and protecting our natural heritage.

As I descended from the fort, the rain continued to fall, cleansing the land and leaving behind a sense of renewal. I knew that Irshalgad would forever hold a special place in my heart, reminding me of the greatness that lies within each of us and the enduring impact we can make on the world around us.

Irshalgad Fort Trek

Irshalgad fort trek is located in between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra. It is a sister fort to Prabalgad. The altitude of the trek is 518 mtrs till the rock cut called Nedhe. The area of the fort is not as large as Prabalgad but there are several water cisterns cut from the rock.

The name Irshalgad itself is a misnomer; Irshalgad is actually a pinnacle and not a fort. It hardly comes across anywhere in history. It may have been used as a watchtower to look after the area between Manikgad and Prabalgad. In May 1666, Shivaji Maharaj conquered the region of Kalyan and Bhiwandi, up to Rairi. Irshalgad, must have come under the Maratha rule at that time. It is the neighbour to Prabalgad. Kumar Prakash Durve lost his life after falling down from this pinnacle onJanuary 23, 1972. To remember this day, all the trekkers from the Mumbai – Thane region assemble here on January 26 every year.

Irshalgad fort trek is actually a pinnacle and it can be easily made out because of it’s distinct shape from the Mumbai Pune Highway. There is a water tank on the route from the Irshal plateau to the peak. The most important characteristic of the for is the “Nedhe” which is a natural rock cavity formed because of wind erosion. There is a water tank and a cave next to the Nedhe. This water is suitable for drinking. The pinnacle needs to be climbed with the aid of rock climbing equipment. The climb is considered to be an easy one by the climbing fraternity but should not be attempted by amateurs. From the top we can see the forts of Prabalgad, Matheran, Chanderi, Malanggad, Karnala and Manikgad.

Irshalgad pinnacle is accessible by an easy to moderate 2 hour trek. Nanivali village (the starting point of this trek) is a comfortable 2.3 kilometres walk from Chowk. A wide well defined path from the Nanivali village takes you to the Irshalwadi village. The path climbs a steep ridge and then tapers to an easy ascend till Irshalwadi. From Irshalwadi village head towards a temple dedicated to a local deity and access the Irshalgad plateau via a west-east axis. The trek is fairly easy till the pinnacle base.

On encounters a water tank on the route from the Irshal plateau to the peak. From there, we reach the needle hole near the top after negotiating a simple rock patch and a rickety ladder. This is pretty trick during monsoons. The route is well marked and has a metal board at some places. Over the years and after numerous landslides, the path as become a bit risky. Proceeding little ahead, we see a water tank to the left and a cave to the right. The route from the Nedhe climbs  up to the top of the pinnacle. It is essential to have artificial rock climbing equipment to climb the pinnacle. Many lives have been lost while trying to climb this pinnacle. There are bolts placed at regular intervals for climbing. The pinnacle climb requires 100 feet of rope and is extremely difficult for a first timer.

Prabalgad can be reached from Irshalgad after a 20km long traverse walk. One needs to starts from Chowk railway station, climb up to Irshalgad Nedhe and back to Irshalwadi before proceeding to Prabalgad by a 2 km long connecting ridge at the North. An exposed traverse over the prabalgad plateau leads you to the Poinje col, from where one can ascend Prabalgad via the  Poinje South ascend (aka Chincholi Vaat) rout. Else one can continue west to reach the southern Prabalmachi village and then continue to Kalavantin Durg, Thakurwadi or Vardoli. A local guide is essential as the trail is often confusing and hidden underneath overgrowth during Monsoon.

How to Reach

Alight at Chowk bus stop and cross Chowk railway station to reach the Morbe Dam road. The trail passes through Nanivali before climbing uphill to Irshalwadi (base village).

The nearest railway station is Karjat from where one can hire a  private vehicle to Base village, Naniali near Chowk. One can also get down at Panvel and take a shared or a private rickshaw to Nanivali near Morbe dam. State Transport buses are also available from Panvel.

If travelling by your own vehicle is Nanivali village near Chowk town should be your road head. Chowk town lies on NH4 that connects Panvel with Karjat and is an easy drive from Mumbai as well as Pune.

From mumbai:.

Dadar – Panvel – Chouk – Irshalwadi = 60 Kms Away from Mumbai.

If you are going by Private Vehicle opt self Driven Cars on Rent

Food and stay arrangement:

You need to carry your own food.

You can camp at the base village, not much space on the top. Carry A Perfect Tent.

Water availability:

Throughout the year its available.

Things you need to carry:

  • 2 litres water
  • Snacks like biscuits, ready to eat food

Places to see:

Two water tank on the top of the fort, you can locate Manikgad, Karnala, Prabalgad, Chanderi from there, the best thing to see is mesmerizing Morbe dam .

Irshalgad fort

My personal Experience and Guidance for you to reach:

Start from Chouk station and enquire locals about Irshalwadi village. As you head towards Irshalwadi, you can spot Morbe Dam towards your right side. Chouk to Irshalwadi is a 90-120 mintues walk. Once you reach Irshalwadi, you will find a small school from where you need to head towards the left and walk through the village and then you would find a temple on your right side. Go straight ahead keeping the temple to your right.

TIPS/HACKS/SUGGESTION: I bet without this you won’t Go for an Outing

Once you reach the first patch to climb from big rocks you will find a route on the left side which is the correct path to reach the top.(Don’t go straight climbing). If you go straight to the top you can encounter a dangerous path.

First you will find a water tank ascend to the top. After the water tank you will also find a small temple to your right and a wooden ladder to ascend to the top.Once there, you will find a window like structure which is usually seen from the base village.

From this window structure, you need to head towards the left, . After this point you come across one more water tank, This tank comes to the left of the top to enjoy better view I recommend to go on the right side of the top. Now you can sit back, unwind & soak in the calmness with an awesome view of the dam.

bath in the morbe dam

To sum up the cost of trek:

Dadar – Panvel (Indian Railway) = Rs. 40 (return)

Panvel – Choul (State Bus Transport) = Rs. 40 (return)

Snacks = Rs. 20

So here you go, a complete guide to trek to Irshalgad in just Rs. 100. If you have any queries , please feel free to contact me . I am just like you. Share it if you found it informative.

TIP/HACKS/SUGGESTION: Best Shoes with great grip on mountains, which is used by almost all Trekker’s

Isn’t dis sound so simple ,trekkers?Trek in merely 100 bucks including banana that you can buy..lol..beyond my imagination..it’s nt just trek, its economical too..who else can make it possible for you all other than my friend..exceptionally blessed to trek,Gautam Vaishanav

Great information .. Always blessed bro

Thank you Baba

Thanks for sharing soo deep information, which is very helpful for new trekkers for this place.

One information which u might need to change is that St bus from Panvel to chowk is Rs 25 return 50. & Also advise people not to climb Irshalgad final patch in heavy rain (after nedhe). And in summer it’s very hot & humid due to the dam water vapour fly around this place.

Yeah, you are right about the last patch its difficult to climb in rainy season.

Hi dear. Thanks for the information written in a very beautiful manner. I wanted to ask whether the route is confusing? i mean is there a need of local guide. Is there any risk of getting lost on the way

If your a first time trekker then you will need a guide. In the blog i have also embedded a video also abt the trek. Feel free to go through it.

About Irshalgad Trek

Irshalgad Fort is located in between Matheran and Panvel in Maharashtra. It is a sister fort to Prabalgad. The area of the fort is not large but there are several water cisterns cuts from the rock.

There is a water tank  on the route from Irshal Plateau to the peak. To reach the top of the pinnacle it is essential to have artificial rock climbing equipment. From the top you can see the forts of Prabalgad, Matheran, Chanderi, Malanggad, Karnala and Manikgad.

From Chowk, Karja village (the starting point of this trek) is a comfortable 2.3 kilometres walk. From Karja village you follow a wide well defined path till Irshalwadi village. The path climbs a steep ridge and then tapers to an easy ascend till Irshalwadi. From Irshalwadi village head towards a temple dedicated to a local deity and access the Irshalgad plateau via a west-east axis. The trek is child friendly till the pinnacle base.

If you are a trekking enthusiast, then Irshalgad night trek in Karjat should be high on your priority list. Get ready for an exciting trek with your family and friends and have a memorable time during this night trek to Irshalgad. It is a good option for people who are looking for trekking near Mumbai because of its convenient location. The pinnacle of Irshalgad which is visible from the Mumbai-Pune old highway has attracted a lot of trekkers. It is often draped in clouds and adds to the seclusion and charm of this place. Surrounded by greenery all around, this hill fort offers a splendid view of the adjacent peaks. Although the fort is hardly mentioned in history, it is a favorite among trekkers, history buffs, adventurers, and nature photographers as well. During the trek, you will also get a chance to explore the base village, Chowk-Irshalwadi.

Located in Western Ghats of Maharashtra, Irshalgad is a fortress situated 3,700 ft. above sea level in the Karjat region between Matheran and Panvel. ‘Irshal’ means a pinnacle and ‘gad’ means a fort. Irshalgad may have been under the Maratha rule when Shivaji Maharaj captured the regions of Kalyan and Bhiwandi up to Rairi in May 1666. Famous for its noticeable pinnacle, Irshalgad is the sister fort of Prabalgad fort. The nearest village is Irshalwadi. The villagers extend whole-hearted guidance and offer warm hospitality to all the tourists visiting this place. While the fort is not as massive as the other forts on the neighboring hills, it does add significance in terms of height.

Your journey will begin from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station, from where you will travel to the base village, Chowk-Irshalwadi. Irshalgad pinnacle is accessible by a moderate 2-3-hour trek for the 3.5-km distance. The ascent from the base village to the top of the fort is a zigzag path. Pace yourself on this path and enjoy matchless views over Morbe reservoir to your right. The night trek to Irshalgad fort would be a wonderful experience for beginners. You can easily make your way up through a series of rock cuts. Do not forget to carry a water bottle, readymade food, and an additional pair of clothes, energy drinks, walking stick, torches, and a first-aid kit. Once you reach the top of this hill fort, the panoramic view of the cluster of forts around is sure to leave you spellbound. Make sure you don’t forget to capture these wonderful memories of Irshalgad night trek on camera. Start your descent back to the base village, after you finish exploring the fort.

This 2-day Irshalgad trekking tour will offer you an ideal escapade, away from the busy city life. Take in the sights and sounds of nature during your trek and have a great time.

Day 0: Mumbai - Karjat Your wonderful sojourn starts from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus railway station in Mumbai on this day. Travel to your destination, Karjat, by Karjat Fast Local at 11:30 PM. You may board the same Karjat Fast local train from any other station, as per your convenience and reach the destination. You will arrive in Karjat station past midnight at 1:50 AM.

Day 1: Karjat – Mumbai Upon reaching the Karjat station, leave for the base village, Chowk-Irshalwadi. On arriving at the base at about 2:30 AM, begin the trek following an introduction session. Head towards Machi, a little plateau in the hills between Matheran and Panvel. Here, you can take rest, enjoy a delicious breakfast, and start your trek to Irshalgad Fort. Upon reaching the top at 9:30 AM, take your time and explore the marvels of the fort. After clicking a few pictures of the stunning views, start your descent back to Machi. Have a delicious lunch by 1:00 PM at Machi, before heading back to the base village. Once you reach the village, head towards Panvel Station to catch a local train to Mumbai. Begin your journey back home with memories of this wonderful Irshalgad trekking tour.
