Q: Is this case waterproof

A:  The zipper will not prevent entry of water from submersion, but the outer casing will prevent small droplet quantities from reaching the interior. That said, wipe excess water from the exterior, and if it's not water, remove the electronics and clean the case properly and allow to dry.

What FS Mountain Bike Should I buy 120 mm travel or 140 mm travel?

  • Add to quote

Dear Everyone, I am buying my first new FS MTB in over a decade and would like some advice and insights. Firstly, I am 47 years old and looking for a bike that I can take on green and maybe easier intermediate trails. At my age, I am not interested in jumping a bike, but living in the Northeast I see myself going over roots and rock in trails. I am definitely not interested.in bike parks with large jumps or any trails beyond an intermediate level. My previous bike was a 2009 Kona Dawg Deluxe with 150 mm / 140 mm travel. I always found the bike a bit unstable and not the most efficient for pedaling. A few weeks ago, I put down a deposit on a large 2022 Trek Top Fuel 9.7 with the intentions of upgrading the fork (to a Fox 34 SC and wheels to a set of Reserve 30 SL to loss some weight. The 2022 Top Fuel has 120 mm of travel front and rear, but I wonder if I would be better served by a bike with more travel such as a Specialized Stumpjumper (130 mm rear / 140 mm front). Question: If I am not intentionally jumping the bike is the 120 mm vs. 140 mm of travel going to be that significant? I definitely do not want anything beyond 140 mm travel and do realize that the Top Fuel can take a 130 mm travel fork. Please advise and thank you.

I can't speak to the trails you'll ride most, but if typical XC-style, 120/120 should serve you well. You'll save a bit of weight, and maybe a bit of money. That said, coming from 150/140, you may prefer - and be used to - more travel.

Most new 120mm bikes will be more capable than your old 150. I'd stick with the Top Fuel.

I can’t speak to that specific bike. However I do have the new stumpjumper 140/130 bike. I am 50 and ride New England trails as well. Mostly in CT, VT & Maine. I bought my son a fuel at the beginning of the pandemic and it seems like a good bike but his medium frame bike is heavier than my xxl (s6) frame. I think Your question about roots is important. With so many riders out there now the trails are getting tougher and tougher. So more suspension is not a bad thing within reason.

The best thing I have done to minimize hand pain is to install a one up carbon handle bar, It made a HUGE difference!

Thank you to everyone for their advice. I will stick with the Top Fuel. I will be doing some climbing and it seems to be a reasonable bike given the type of trails and aggressiveness (or lack their of) I plan to ride.

I'm similar age and I ride a 120mm trail bike including some light downhill, jumps and drops. That amount of travel is more than enough to smooth out bumps and rocks and give you a comfortable and controlled ride. Going larger usually means a slacker and heavier bike. Fine for downhill, but a lot less fun for regular trails. If you were looking for something a little more capable I'd first focus on the tires. Going from a 2.2 to a 2.35 to a 2.6 makes a huge difference in grip and call also compensate for less travel. On my current bike I ride (and race) with a 120/120 aluminum FS with 2.35 Ardent Race on the front and 2.2 Rekon Race on the back. But if I wasn't racing at all I'd run 2.6" wide tires and feel like a superhero on our local trails.

Great suggestion on the tires. The bike only takes 2.5" tires and I have 30 mm internal width rims so I went with a Maxxis Rekon 29x2.4WT on the rear and a Maxxis Dissector 29x2.4WT for the front.

For the riding you’re describing, I’d get a Fuel EX, which is a good all around trail bike, also since this is your first 29”, it’s not bad to go with a bike that has more room to grow, fatter tired, more travel, just the right mix for an all around bike. The Top Fuel is a cross country bike, not what I’d grab for riding east coast roots, might work fine for lapping fast flowy stuff or for some hobby XC racing. Max tire size 2.4”, that’s not a trail bike spec. Seriously, with that low bar position the Top Fuel just screams spandex!

most trail bikes now have 2.4-2.5 tires, which fit the top fuel so not sure what you’re saying. Also I’m assuming you haven’t researched the newest top fuel as MBUK literally gave it TRAIL bike of the year. Slap a 130 on the front and it’s super capable and more a light trail bike now

travel deluxe 140

👆 What Ben said... Based on the needs you described, the Fuel EX is a much better choice.

I have to disagree with the above statement, for blue and green trails the top fuel is plenty capable. the geometry has improved so much over the last few years. get the top fuel!

Agreed. You don't need 140mm on a FS for beginner/intermediate level trails. I get some people grow into things, and yeah, if he rides rowdier trails in the future, maybe it'd be nice to have the extra travel. But he's asking specifically about green/intermediate flow trails, which I've always ridden on a 100mm hardtail with zero problems or discomfort. The 140mm on a modern MTB is overkill IMO. Dude made the right choice for him.

travel deluxe 140

Check out JC Trails on youtube. He got a 2022 Top Fuel 8 and shows what it can do. It's not a just an XC bike anymore. He is in south shore Massachusetts.

Stick with the Top Fuel and see if the dealer will give you a good price on slapping in a 130 air shaft on the fork. That will basically involve a lowers servicing, which really isn't a bad idea with a new fork anyway. Might as well start out as plush as possible!

About hand pain, that seems to be coming from the steep seat tube angles along with long reaches. Also depends on what is causing it. Bars with more back sweep help a lot. 120/120 is more than enough for what you describe. Look up Bryce bike park in VA, rode every trail on 120/100mm Tallboy.

I went there for the first time this past season. It was 100 out and I was roasting on that lift. It was painful going past that swimming pool. I wanted to jump in so bad. Fun bike park that takes advantage of the elevation. That Pickleback trail could use some updating though. Has potential, good lines but the jumps/features are kinda bizarre. Had a good time though. I like how the parking lot is right there and you can go back to your car wherever you wanna get outta the sun for a bit. And yeah, 120mm is MORE than enough!

travel deluxe 140

I'm 44 and here's my input. You can do everything you've described on the shorter travel bike. That bike will be more capable than your old 2009 bike, tech and geo has advanced significantly since then. Having said, your body will be more comfortable on the bike with more travel. Even 10mm more travel gives you a larger margin for error. I ride both a short travel 29er and medium travel (150ish) 27.5 trail bike. I race the 29er and ride the 27.5 bike for 'fun' and the occasional Enduro race. My body definitely hurts less after a day on the longer travel bike.

travel deluxe 140

All things equal, more travel equals more speed with more margin for error and comfort on roots and rocks. New mid-travel bikes pedal so well that for the non-racer the only penalty is a couple pounds for that extra travel. I just went from a Yeti SB100 to a Stumpjumper Evo and at 51 in the PNW I'm loving it.

Between 120-140mm I'd say suspension kinematics which match your riding style is more important than 20mm of travel.

travel deluxe 140

You can be in the top 1% on the vast majority of trails on a 120mm bike. It might not be as comfortable, sure. But it also doesn’t turn a four hour ride into a five hour ride like a long travel bike will. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Has anyone compare a 2022 Trek Top Fuel to a 2022 Specialized Stumpjumper? Several local shops have Stumpjumpers in various builds in my size S4. I am going to test ride a Specialized Stumpjumper Comp Carbon at a local shop today or tomorrow. Just curious if you have any feedback. Best, John

Personally, I think you should not rule out longer travel bikes. Today's 150-160mm bikes are now the 120-140mm trail bikes of 10 years ago. For general riding, I wouldn't consider anything less than 150mm unless I planned on xc racing. Back in the day a longer travel bike sucked on the up and was heavy as ****. Now you get efficient suspension designs significantly better suspension and that 150mm bike if built light will pedal as well as the 120mm bike but give you more grins on the down. Now buying a lower travel bike because you aren't hitting stuff and are risk-averse is actually increasing your risk factor for crashing. You are selecting a bike that is less capable and easier to crash on. If in fact, you do want to reduce the possibility of crashing you should consider a longer travel bike. Rant over.

Where Can You Ride a Short-Travel Mountain Bike?

Short travel mountain bikes are ideal all-rounder bicycles for fast and zippy trails, whether it is flat or hilly.

Downhill mountain bikes with lots of travel are ideal for extremely rough terrain with big drops and large obstacles but provide a disadvantage on flatter terrain.

The less stiff your suspension is, the more speed you lose when riding fast on flat terrain. So you need to choose a bike that best suits the type of riding you intend to do. For most All-mountain, Cross-country, and Trail riding, you shouldn’t need more travel than 100-130mm. MTB bikes with travel between 140-180mm are intended for intense downhill and enduro-style riding.

Of course, many of these bikes have adjustable suspension, so in some cases, you can change it for the terrain of that day. However, if you don’t intend on ever tackling extreme downhills, big jumps, or huge drops, then there is no need to spend the extra on advanced suspension with unnecessarily long travel.

Other Factors to Keep in Mind

Carbon vs. aluminum: which is better.

Which is better: Carbon or Aluminum for a full-sus. MTB? Well, carbon has taken over the whole cycling industry for a while by now, and it is not different from the mountain bike scene. As carbon-tubing gets better each year, there is a reason why mountain bikers prefer carbon over aluminum. Carbon simply has the right ‘feel’ to the whole ride, while providing enough durability and ways to form a bike.

Tires & Tire Pressure

It is recommended to use more air in the rear tire when on trails.

  • 29″ – 18-28 psi. Plus-size tires or on wider wheels (Ibis) can be run on lower,11-18 psi range
  • 27.5″ (650b) – 16-30 psi.

Lowering your tire pressure means you create more contact with the ground so if you have thin tires, less pressure will provide more grip. However, while this may be a bit more comfortable offroad it comes at the sacrifice of speed on flatter ground. Depending on your weight, you should try to find a perfect balance that isn’t too low or too hard.

Tubeless tires can usually run lower pressure since there is no tube to pinch. Similarly, wider rims can also accommodate lower tire pressure. These are all factors to consider when pumping your tires.

Suspension set-up

You should always tune your suspension correctly to accommodate your weight and riding style. This can be done by rocking up and down on the bike to measure your ‘sag’ rate and then adjusting the air or spring pressure accordingly.

If you’re going to be hitting big jumps or drops, you’ll need a wider, looser suspension to take heavy impact. If you’re riding mostly flat trails, you’ll want it stiffer so you don’t over-compress and lose speed on each little bump.

Compression / Sag / Rebound

The Sag, as mentioned earlier, is important to measure and set accordingly before heading out on the trails. Once that’s done, set the rebound damping by pushing on the front suspension and seeing if you get any ‘bounce’. Tighten it until it only rebounds once, doesn’t bounce up and down.

For the compression settings, you’ll need to specify them according to your riding style. Different shocks have different settings, so it’s down to your style and preference. Basically, add more compression damping if you want tighter traction on corners, or less if you want more absorption on big drops.

Rider Weight

It’s important to get the correct weight distribution on a full-suspension bike otherwise you could injure yourself on the trails. The longer wheelbase a bike has, the more stable it will be, so heavier riders should consider this factor.

Bottom bracket height is also important, as the higher the less stability you get but it can’t be too close to the ground either for obvious safety reasons. Generally, these measurements can all be perfected for you in-store when you buy a new bike. It’s always a good idea to have a professional fit your bike for you.

TravelScoot Folding Mobility Scooter

Available soon: disability-rickshaw.

  • The new Escape by TravelScoot

The new Shopping Cruiser by TravelScoot

Travelscoot deluxe, travelscoot child (mid-mod) seat, travelscoot lp (little person) mod, a spare escape-frame as a back-up.

People with mobility challenges who also are unable to propel themselves are essentially limited to being moved around by manual wheelchair, of which there are many.

Because of the necessary foldability, these are almost without exception extremely heavy at around 15 kg, bulky and, on top of that, very often uncomfortable. The pushing and attending caregiver must struggle with the first two issues, and the passenger with the third. Add to that the stigma associated with wheelchairs, which doesn’t exactly boost an individual’s self-confidence. And as far as luggage goes – forget it!

TravelScoot auf Kopfsteinpflaster

TravelScoot ℱ ’s goal to reduce these undesirable characteristics and eliminate having to push altogether has been achieved with our Disab-Rickshaw. The wheelchair is replaced with a super-comfortable and much lighter folding camping seat that has been reinforced to handle the new job and can be folded in seconds. The wheeled unit consists of an aluminum frame with quick-release wheels. Folding is not necessary. The folding seat can be strapped to the frame in just a few seconds. This combination weighs little more than 18 lbs. The “wheelchair” has been transformed into a rolling seat, and there is plenty of room for luggage under the seat.

The drive system consists of proven TravelScoot ℱ motor and frame components fitted with a standing platform for the (previously pushing) caregiver and coupled to the new wheel-chair unit. Steering, speed and braking and backing up is handled by the standing driver. The steering mechanism is similar to that of a Asian rickshaw, hence the name. Including the Li-Ion Battery, the ready to ride set-up is not much heavier than 40 lbs. and fit easy through the hatchback of most cars after the seat is removed and folded in seconds. A certain fun-factor was not really part of the plan, but numerous participants found it to be nice bonus.

The new Escape by TravelScoot ℱ

The new TravelScoot ℱ Escape is the result of years of positive feedback and customer input. The performance specifications are the same as with the previous TravelScoot ℱ Deluxe design.

The dimensions are slightly more compact; It will fit through any cruise ship cabin door, even smaller ones. You no longer have to painstakingly gather information from the cruise lines about door widths. The new folding system makes loading into a car easier, as well.

As with the Shopping Cruiser, the step-over height has also been reduced to less than half that of the previous model.

The total weight including the 252 Wh battery was further reduced by about 1.5 kg to only 14.8 kg without affecting the load capacity. That is a tremendous amount considering that the battery, motor and wheels remain unchanged.

Der neue Escape von TravelScoot

Unlike the predecessor model Travelscoot Deluxe, the Escape no longer requires you to choose between two sizes. The vehicle fits people from about 150 cm to 190 cm in height, and 155 kg. (The scooter will accommodate heavier riders, please inquire). A person with a 150 cm girth should have no problem fitting on the Escape. However, for people above these size parameters we offer a selection of affordable accessories to accommodate riders 200 cm and above. The Escape can also accommodate people smaller than the above parameters, with the use of our proven modifications for smaller-statured adults and children.

All our existing accessories can also be used on the new model.

Since its introduction in 2004 the TravelScoot ℱ is and has remained the world’s lightest mobility scooter, without interruption; Not a single competitor came even close to our unmatched 16 kg.

We even opted for wider wheels to allow riding on mowed grass or bumpy terrain. It is virtually impossible to reduce weight further without.

  • Weakening the structure
  • Reducing motor output
  • Installing smaller wheels
  • Reducing battery capacity

There are many venues and facilities across the globe that see primarily pedestrian traffic, with paved surfaces and modest inclines. The operators of these places also require that vehicles permitted in these areas do not exceed pedestrian speeds, for obvious safety reasons. In order to satisfy this requirement we have applied points 2, 3 and 4 to our new Shopping Cruiser, further trimming down the weight while maintaining full frame strength.

Mobility scooter TravelScoot Shopper

By reducing motor output to 100W and wheel size to 6 inches we have managed to meet the above requirement for 4 km/h maximum allowable speed while also reducing the already low weight by a further 4 kg to 12 kg total when equipped with our 152Wh battery. The Shopping Cruiser has no problem climbing an 8% incline from a standstill with 150 kg load (the international standard for wheelchair ramps is 6%).

While cobblestones are never comfortable to ride on, they don’t pose a problem. Our suspension seat post provides comfort.

The only drawback is that the Cruising Shopper prefers relatively solid surfaces (avoid grass).

TravelScoot auf Kopfsteinpflaster

Shopping Cruiser on a dirt trail

The noticeably lower entry height, 9 cm, or less than half that of the regular TravelScoot ℱ , is a significant update. This is enormously helpful for those who have severe problems standing and walking.

Because of its extreme low weight, quick and simple folding and its minimal storage space requirements, the Shopping Cruiser is predestined for hourly or daily rental in pedestrian-only zones, shopping centres, fairs, expos, museums, cruise ships an so on.

Our child mid-mod seat and LP mod fit on the Shopping Cruiser as well.

Note: No longer in production. However, spare parts, service and repair remain available. All Deluxe accessories can be used on our new models.

The TravelScoot ℱ Deluxe comes equipped with a 252 Wh lithium-ion battery. A 152Wh and 420Wh option are available. It is also possible to stack two batteries to increase range. However, only one battery at a time can be plugged in. Swapping connections takes less than a minute.

For more information on batteries click here .

Mobility Scooter TravelScoot

The TravelScoot ℱ is available in two sizes. The smaller Junior version is suitable for persons ranging from roughly 140 to 165 cm in height and of proportionate build. The weight difference to the full-size version is negligible, since the frame is “shrunk” by only a small amount of aluminum tubing. Customized seating options are available for children 6 and older and short-statured people around 85 cm and up tall.

Mobility Scooter TravelScoot

Our 252 Wh battery provides about a range of approximately 18 km with a 100 kg load. Battery condition, load, driving style and terrain will affect endurance. Lighter riders may expect more range, while heavier riders can expect less range.

The so-called child mid-mod is designed to grow with your child. As your child grows the seat can be gradually raised and the backrest can be moved aft. When the child grows 140 cm, the mid-mod module can be replaced with the regular Junior configuration. There is no charge for this aside from modest shipping fees.

Short-statured individuals, primarily those with achondroplasia, will find our lowest seat option very suitable, as it allows them to comfortably reach the handlebars and footrests. Personal items can be stowed beneath the seat. Our folding basket can be attached to the front or rear in the same manner as with our other TravelScoot ℱ models.

For the past 15 years the Roloffs have been the main characters in the reality-TV show Little People, Big World , which is broadcast in numerous countries.

Matt Roloff

Matt Roloff

They show the various challenges little people must deal with on a daily basis. In addition, several of them have mobility issues. Matt contacted TravelScoot back in 2006 and said that no suitable light-weight mobility scooter options existed for this group of people. TravelScoot designer Hardy Huber saw this as a challenge, and since then has been the go-to person for little people from around the globe.

Scooter for disabled people with Achondroplasia

Around that time, very heavy-weight people began to take notice of the TravelScoot, and they, too, found that the TravelScoot provided a solution to their needs (travelscoot-blog) . The basic TravelScoot can be customized for large and small with the addition of just a few components.

Even though the TravelScoot electric mobility scooters have proven to be very reliable over the years, there are times when a back-up scooter would be quite useful.

Even the most reliable vehicle needs maintenance and repair from time to time, and who can do this better than the vehicle manufacturer or dealer? Of course, they are usually not located near the customer, and time in shipping to and from could take a week or longer. Many TravelScoot owners, however, use their scooter almost daily, and do not want to be without it for that long. In most cases only the folded basic frame needs to be shipped, without the seat assembly, battery, caddy, footrests or front wheel.

Now you can purchase a spare Escape frame at a reduced price. You simply install the components you kept, and your back-up vehicle is ready to go in just minutes. You won’t have to suffer any “TravelScoot withdrawals’” while your scooter is out for repair.

I’ve recently acquired some very nice VTL Deluxe 140 monoblocks. I can’t find a manual anywhere, so if anybody has a soft copy they could send me I’d be most appreciative. My question pertains to the 5 switches across the chassis. Can anybody shed some light on which ones switch beween triode/pentode mode ... and which way is which? And which one is the feedback switch ... and which way adds/subtracts the feedback? Any assistance much appreciated.

Have you tried asking VTL? Send an email to Luke or Bea and see if they have an owner's manual. The center switch will be the FB the louder position will be the less feedback position. As for the triode/tetrode, in triode mode there will a lot less power. Try putting all of the switches in one position, either forward or backward, and check the power out. Then turn the amp off and switch the to the opposite position, more or less power? NEVER EVER use the those switches with the power on!!!!!! Craig

Thanks Craig, I recall reading another thread where someone had called VTL for info about older products, and they reported they were only interested in trying to sell them new components. Thanks for your suggestions. I’ll just need to take some measurements. I knew this of course, but I was being lazy. 😁

A couple of under-the-chassis shots may help, just have to trace how the switches are connected.

Some time ago I repaired a VTL 807 amp push pull previous repair man had set the bias to 70 ma The 807's had 600 volts triode connected for 50 watts, was supposed to be 35ma. I wondered if the VTL Deluxe 140 mono blocks are single ended? I have never been able to find a circuit for the 50 watt 807 triode amp; I was under the impression VTL does not supply Circuits? Interest how they get 50 watts.

  • 2018-04-08 9:36 pm

I checked on internet and the VTL 140 is push pull.

Item:  VTL Deluxe 140 Monoblock Power Amplifiers Location: Gold Coast Qld Price: $3000.00 Item Condition: excellent Reason for selling: too much gear/ downsizing. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD. Extra Info:paypal must clear before shipment.   Pictures: VTL Deluxe 140 Monoblock Power Amplifiers

Very desirable limited edition mono-blocks operate in both ultra linear @ 140 Watts Rms  per channel and in pure class A triode mode switchable at 70 Watts Per Channel.

Each mono-block has 6 x 807 ultra wide bandwidth transmitting tubes plus 1 x 6350 and 1 x 12at7

Fully adjustable bias current controls with wide range pots fitted to use a wide selection of 807 brands and types.

Both mono-blocks perform flawlessly and are in excellent condition.

I am the original owner since new and have them serviced every 5 years since I bought them and they have always checked out perfect although the capacitors on one were changed some time ago due to aging over time. The other capacitors were checked and were as per spec and have remained so ever since.

I think David Manley actually wound the output transformers when he still owned the VTL and you notice after a few hours of playing, the music starts to get very liquid while retaining their dynamic headroom and all the other traits that David Manley engineered into these great amplifiers. These amps look particularly nice at night when you can see the blue space charge in the 807 tubes!

They come with a spare set of tubes (12 x 807 2 x 6350 2 x 12at7)

They weigh about 35Kg each but there are courier services that can ship nationwide quite reasonably.

I am sad to let them go but must as I am doing extensions to my house and could use the money.

I also have a matching VTL High Definition Line Preamplifier that I purchased along with the mono-blocks and used them as a set. it is also in excellent condition and has some telefunken 801s triangle tubes in it. Very nice sound signature, especially with the 807ñ€ℱs.

Anyway asking price is $3000

These mono-blocks cost me $8000 15 years ago, so I think that is a pretty good price.

I had the VTL 300W monos (6550 based) from this era for years and loved the big soundstage and sense of space in the reproduction. Highly addictive and relaxingly musical

San francisco sues oakland over new airport name that includes ‘san francisco’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

San Francisco on Thursday sued Oakland after officials there voted in favor of changing the name of the city’s airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport, saying the change will cause confusion and is already affecting its airport financially.

Last week, the Board of Commissioners for the Port of Oakland voted unanimously to move forward with the name-change and scheduled a second vote for final approval on May 9.

San Francisco has sued Oakland after officials there voted in favor of changing the name of the city's airport to San Francisco Bay Oakland International Airport. San Francisco officials say the change will cause confusion and is already affecting its airport financially.

The airport is currently called Oakland International Airport.

“We had hoped Oakland would come to its senses, but their refusal to collaborate on an acceptable alternative name leaves us no choice but to file a lawsuit to protect SFO’s trademark,” San Francisco City Attorney David Chiu said in a statement.

San Francisco is asking the court to prevent Oakland airport from moving forward with its name-change and rule that the new name violates San Francisco International Airport’s trademark.

“The renaming plan appears intentionally designed to divert travelers who may be unfamiliar with Bay Area geography and lead them to believe OAK has a business relationship with SFO, which it does not,” Chiu said, adding that the renaming would be particularly confusing for international travelers who don’t speak or read English.

San Francisco is asking the court to prevent Oakland airport from moving forward with its name-change and rule that the new name violates San Francisco International Airport’s trademark.

Oakland airport officials said they plan to implement the name-change and defend their right to do so in court.

“OAK’s proposed renaming does not infringe upon SFO’s mark,” the Port of Oakland said in a statement.

“We will vigorously defend our right to claim our spot on the San Francisco Bay.”

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

5. Kievskaya Metro Station was one of the first to be completed in Moscow. Named after the capital city of Ukraine by Kiev-born, Nikita Khruschev, Stalin's successor.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
