lake huron cruises

The backbone of the Great Lakes is a rock formation called the Niagara Escarpment, and it runs along the Canadian shore of Lake Huron and creates some of the most dramatic cruising grounds on the lakes. The Bruce Peninsula, part of this escarpment, separates Lake Huron from Georgian Bay with magnificent overhanging cliffs and grottos. Sailing further northwest reveals the spectacular North Channel and the Straits of Mackinac. This strait between Lake Huron and Lake Michigan and the surrounding region have historically been known as Michilimackinac. Pronounced “Mackinaw” for short, it has witnessed French Jesuit missionaries and voyageurs, the development of the beaver fur trade and the competition between England and France to be the dominant colonial power in North America. La Salle, the quintessential 17th century French explorer, built the first European sailing vessel to ply the Great Lakes. In August 1679, LaSalle set sail west upon Lake Erie cruising on waters previously traversed only by birch bark canoes. On the third day, he entered a strait at the western end of the lake. La Salle simply named it “le détroit du lac Érie” meaning the strait of Lake Erie. Today, we simply call the city now located there Detroit. That is where this cruise begins, and the first half of it approximates LaSalle’s journey along the northern shore of Lake Huron to Mackinac Island. This cruise alternates between U.S. and Canadian ports of call, please follow all customs and immigration rules for both the U.S. and Canada while boating on Lake Huron.

Two lighthouses are a major draw to Presque Isle. At one end of the “island” is the Old Presque Isle Lighthouse, one of the oldest surviving lighthouses on the Great Lakes. Built in 1840, the harbor light operated until 1871 when the keeper transferred to a new, taller, coastal lighthouse a mile to the north. The Old Presque Isle Lighthouse park is a composed of two main structures, a keepers dwelling and a light tower. The stone and brick tower measures 30 feet tall. Visitors can climb the hand-hewn stone steps for a panoramic view of the Lake Huron shoreline. Nearby is the one-story brick keeper's dwelling that serves as a hands-on museum. The "New Presque Isle Light", at 108 feet, is the tallest lighthouse tower accessible by the public on the Great Lakes. That light station complex is part of a 99-acre township park that includes a playground, picnic area, pavilion and nature trails.

Mackinac Island

Mackinac Island on map of Great Lakes

Mackinac City on the mainland was the location of an important Fort in the French and Indian Wars in the 1760s, changing hands several times. The fort was moved to Mackinac Island in 1780-81 and stayed in British hands until the American Revolutionary forces occupied it in 1796. In the 1860s, the island became a famous summer vacation spot, as Americans escaped the cities for the healthy airs of Lake Michigan. The Grand Hotel, its iconic accommodation, was built in 1887, and still opens its doors to guests only for the summer season.

Awaken in the Straits of Mackinac, which connect Lake Huron to Lake Michigan. With no cars allowed on the island, you’ll enjoy a horse-drawn carriage tour, a great way to experience the Victorian ambiance of this National Historic Landmark. Learn about the island’s history and see turn-of-the century summer homes built by early captains of American industry.

High atop a bluff overlooking the Straits of Mackinac, tour Fort Mackinac, with its strategic importance during the War of 1812. Then take in the views from the Grand Hotel’s verandah, the longest in the world, and enjoy the hotel’s infamous Grand Luncheon Buffet.

Browse through the town’s galleries and boutiques, before heading back to your ship.

Lake Huron - Cruising & Navigation

St. clair river to the straits of mackinac.

Lake Huron lies to the north of the western end of Lake Erie and is the second largest of the five Great Lakes by surface area. We will be avoiding the debate as to whether Lakes Huron and Michigan are actually a single lake, hydrologically speaking.

As with the other Great Lakes, except Lake Michigan, Lake Huron is controlled by both Canada and the United States with the international boundary running approximately down the middle of the main body of the lake from the head of the St. Clair River north to False De Tour Passage. While often disputed, North Channel and Georgian Bay are officially part of Lake Huron.

Chart of Lake Huron

Lake Huron is bordered on the north, east, and south by the Canadian Province of Ontario and on the west and south by the U.S. state of Michigan.

The primary water source of Lake Huron, is Lake Superior via the St. Marys River at its northern end. Waters from Lake Michigan also feed Lake Huron through the Straits of Mackinac, however the opposite is also true with the waters of Huron occasionally flowing into Lake Michigan. The lake’s outlet is the St. Clair River draining south through Lake St. Clair and the Detroit River into Lake Erie.

While Lake Huron has no direct navigational access to the Atlantic Ocean or Gulf of Mexico, it is connected by a number of means. Via the St. Lawrence River, Lake Ontario , and Lake Erie for deep draft vessels, via the Hudson River , Erie Canal , and Lake Erie for shallow draft vessels, and finally the Mississippi River System, Des Plaines River, the Chicago Sanitary Canal, and Lake Michigan when entering from the Gulf of Mexico for shallow draft vessels as well.

Lake Huron Facts Lake Huron is ≈179 NM (206 SM / 332 KM) long and 159 NM (183 SM / 295 KM) wide at its widest point.

Navigable access to Lake Huron is limited to the St. Clair River, the St. Marys River, and Lake Michigan; all allowing passage for both deep and shallow draft vessels.

Navigation Season

For all vessels the navigation season is governed by ice on the lake. For commercial vessels and lock operations, the navigation season typically begins in late March (20th to the 31st) and runs through late December (24th to the 31st) typically being closed January, February, and a large portion of March.

For most recreational boaters, they typically launch in May and haul out by late October or early November.

Because of its depth, Lake Huron has never been known to completely freeze over in winter.

Buoys and Marks

Buoys, beacons, and lights on Lake Huron make use of the standard IALA Region B lateral buoyage system (Red Right Returning). In the Great Lakes, “Red Right Returning” is generally considered to be upbound.

Green Buoy

Lake Huron Facts With a surface area of 23,007 mi² (59,590 km2 / 19,992.5 NM’s); Lake Huron is the second largest Great Lake (by surface area), slightly smaller than the state of West Virginia, and the 3rd largest freshwater lake in the world.

Tides and currents.

Studies show that the Great Lakes do in fact experience a semidiurnal tidal pattern. The tidal range however, is extremely small - averaging around 1 inch and reaching 1.6 to 2.0 inches (4-5cm) during the largest of tides. This tidal range is so small, that they are often hidden by other fluctuations in water levels that are caused by the weather. As a result, Lake Huron can be generally considered as "non-tidal."

Water Level Fluctuations

The normal elevation of the lake's surface does in fact change. During the course of each year, Lake Huron’s surface is subject to a consistent seasonal rise and fall, the lowest stages occurring primarily during the winter and the highest during the summer. These fluctuations generally average around 2.0 feet, but recently it appears that these fluctuations are getting larger while the general lake level is getting higher.

In addition to seasonal fluctuations, Seiches (changes in water level produced by winds, storms, squalls, and to a lesser degree, barometric pressure changes) often occur. The wind and barometric pressure changes that accompany squalls can produce fluctuations lasting from a few minutes to a few hours. Strong storm winds of sustained speed and direction can produce fluctuations lasting a few hours or a day. Lake Huron is less prone to these water surface oscillations than Lake Erie due to the lake’s surface area, north/south orientation, and deeper depths.

Surface Currents

Lake Huron’s surface currents are typically wind driven and tend to follow the wind direction. This implies that surface current tends to flow from the southwest to the northeast since the predominant wind direction on the lake is southwesterly. The only area where this may differ is in Georgian Bay and North Channel, where a ESE through south current flow may be found.

Average surface current speeds on Lake Huron during mid-summer are for all practical purposes non-existent. At its maximum, it rarely exceeds 0.6 knot and averages approximately 0.2 knots.

Lake Ontario Facts Lake Ontario has the smallest surface area of all the Great Lakes, (7,340 SM² / 18,960 KM²), yet is still ranked as the 13th largest lake in the world. With a fresh water volume of 393 SM³ (1,639 KM³), that works out to 432.7 Trillion (with a "T") gallons of water.

Like all of the individual Great Lakes, Lake Huron acts like heat sink that moderates the temperatures of the surrounding land, cooling the summers and warming the winters. The lake also acts like giant humidifier, increasing the moisture content of the air. In the winter, this moisture contributes to the heavy snowfalls famous for the Great Lakes area and known as "Lake Effect" snow.

The weather on Lake Huron averages from cool to mild during the months of May thru October.

Temperatures

Temperatures range from low to mid 60’s in May to upper 70’s during July and August before dropping back to the mid 50’s in October.

Water temperatures average between 39° F in May peaking out at approximately 69° F Late July and early August before dropping back into the mid 40’s by the end of October.

Wind speeds Average 11 MPH in May to 9 MPH in July and August increasing to 14 MPH during October.

The shape of Lake Huron is such that strong winds from any quarter may generate rough seas somewhere on the lake. South through west winds are common in early autumn, while west and southwest winds prevail in late autumn. West through northwest winds are often the strongest.

Summer winds blow mainly out of the south through west, particularly southwest. These directions are also favored during the other seasons. Gales, however, are encountered less than 1% of the time from May through September.

Wind speeds on Lake Huron of 15 knots or less occur on average 97.7% of the time during the summer boating season while wind speeds of 10 knots or less occur on average 86.9% of the time.

If the fetch and duration are sufficient, waves of 10 feet or more can be generated in open waters by winds from any direction once they reach 20 knots or more. This occurs most often during October, November, and December.

Gales are most frequent in autumn. By late summer there is a noticeable increase, lake wide, in the frequency of gales, and this increase until the end of the navigation season. During November and December, gales are blowing 5 to 10 percent of the time, while wind speeds of 28 knots or more may be encountered up to 23 percent of the time.

These winds are mainly generated by winter storms; their frequency falls dramatically in spring. By June and July, gales are expected less than 1 percent of the time, while wind of 28 knots or more blow less than 3 percent of the time. However, squall lines and thunderstorms can produce violent short period wind from spring through fall.

Lake Huron’s maximum wind occurred on November 11th 1913. Winds out of the south peaked at 78.2 knots (90 mph / 144.8 kph. These winds were triggered by the infamous Great Lakes Storm of 1913.

Shoreline extremes range from 43 to 53 knots. Directions of these extremes are often out of the southwest; but west, northwest, and northeast winds have set some of these records. Most of the records were set from late fall through late winter.

Visibilities

While visibilities are often restricted by any number of factors, fog is the most frequent and troublesome cause of reduced visibility on Lake Huron.

Dense fog plagues the mariner most often in spring and early summer over Lake Huron’s open lake waters. From April into July visibilities drop below 0.5 mile up to 11 percent of the time. May and June are the worst times, and the cold, central waters are the most likely place. These fogs are usually the result of warm air moving across the still cold lake. They often come on winds with a southerly component; but northwesterly, northeasterly, and easterly winds also bring them.

Fog is most prevalent and thickest during the morning hours. Rain, blowing snow and low clouds also reduce visibilities, particularly from late fall through early spring.

The orientation of Lake Huron make it susceptible to winds out of the northerly and southerly quadrants, which can quickly raise dangerous seas. If these winds are continuous over a long period of time, a surge problem (Seiches) can be created at both ends of the lake.

Rough seas are most frequent in late fall (November and December) and can occur most often anywhere on the lake. Waves of 9 feet or larger (3 m) can be expected less than 1% of the time annually.

Thunderstorms

While Thunderstorms can occur at any time, they are most frequent from April through October, with peak activity during June, July, and August. Over the open water during this peak season thunderstorms are encountered 2 percent of the time. They are most likely between midnight and sunrise. Onshore thunderstorms can be expected on 4 to 7 days per month in the summer months being most likely during the afternoons.

The central part of Lake Huron is mainly an open water area, but drifting patches of thin ice may be present from early February until mid-March. These patches drift S towards the St. Clair River.

Ice normally begins to form in harbors and shallow-water areas in early December with ice fields and concentrated brash forming in early January.

In North Channel, fast ice forms in mid-January and reaches a thickness of 25 to 30 inches by mid-March. In Georgian Bay, ice begins to form near the end of December, and fast ice is well established by early January. The cover spreads over the entire bay by the end of January. This ice usually reaches the thick category during the first half of March. Decay begins in mid-March; the ice melts within the bay, and the area is clear by mid-April. Rotting fast ice may be present in some areas until the end of April.

The Straits of Mackinac is subject to severe problem ice conditions. The area is very susceptible to wind actions, and the ice cover is unpredictable. Ice forms early in the season in the Straits and attains an average thickness of 17 inches and an average maximum thickness of 25 inches. The solid ice thickness remains about the same throughout the season. The prevailing W winds cause considerable ridging and 4 to 6 foot windrows are common. Some ice ridges as much as 30 feet deep have been reported.

Overall, ice deterioration begins in March or April, stable fast ice becomes drift ice moving with winds and currents. Tracks cut by icebreakers become unreliable as the ice field deteriorates and shifts. Thick shore ice may drift into otherwise open channels endangering even ice-reinforced vessels. A vessel which becomes beset in drift ice is vulnerable to grounding because of the many shoals, reefs and shallow-water areas in the Straits of Mackinac.

North America's Great Lakes (aka Laurentian Great Lakes) are five large freshwater lakes connected (via the Great Lakes Waterway and Saint Lawrence Seaway ) to the Atlantic Ocean. The lakes (Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie, Ontario) are either on or near the USA-Canada border (only Lake Michigan is entirely within the USA), making the Great Lakes a two-nation inland waterway system. The five lakes are interconnected (via the Great Lakes Waterway) which allows year-round passenger and cargo shipping operations.

The Laurentian Great Lakes are the planet's largest group of freshwater lakes and the world's second-largest (after Russia's Lake Baikal) by combined water volume (5439 mi3/22671 km3) accounting for ~1/5th (21%) of the world's surface freshwater. Lake Baikal has water volume 5666 mi3/23615 km3) or ~23% of the Earth's surface freshwater. Due to their huge sizes, these lakes are like inland seas, with characteristics like great depths, rolling waves, sustained/storm-speed winds, strong currents.

Great Lakes' water flow starts from Superior and via Huron-Michigan-Erie to Ontario, from where continues (via the St Lawrence River) towards the Atlantic. The lake basin is fed by numerous rivers and also contains several thousand smaller lakes and ~35000 islands.

The Great Lakes are judicially divided among one Canadian province (Ontario) and eight American states (Michigan/MI, Wisconsin/WI, Minnesota/MN, Illinois/IL, Indiana/IN, Ohio/OH, Pennsylvania/PA, New York/NY). Ontario and Michigan are bordered via three lakes (Superior, Huron, Erie). Erie and Ontario are commonly referred to as "lower lakes" while Michigan, Huron and Superior as "upper lakes".

Next are listed the 5x lakes and their main stats.

Lake Superior has surface area (31700 mi2/82000 km2), water volume (2900 mi3/12000 km3) max depth (1333 ft/406 m), largest cities in the USA ( Duluth MN , Marquette MI , Sault Ste Marie MI , Superior WI, and in Canada (Sault Ste Marie ON, Thunder Bay ON ).

Lake Michigan has surface area (22300 mi2/58000 km2), water volume (1180 mi3/4900 km3) max depth (925 ft/282 m), cities in Illinois ( Chicago ), Indiana (Gary), Wisconsin ( Green Bay , Sheboygan, Milwaukee , Kenosha, Racine) and Michigan ( Muskegon , Traverse City ).

Lake Huron has surface area (23000 mi2/60000 km2), water volume (850 mi3/3500 km3) max depth (748 ft/228 m), largest cities in Michigan USA ( Alpena , Bay City, Port Huron) and in Ontario Canada (Collingwood, Owen Sound, Sarnia).

Lake Erie has surface area (9910 mi2/25700 km2), water volume (116 mi3/480 km3) max depth (210 ft/64 m), largest cities in the USA (Buffalo NY, Toledo OH, Erie PA , Detroit MI ) and Ontario Canada ( Cleveland , Lorain, Sandusky).

Lake Ontario has surface area (7340 mi2/19000 km2), water volume (393 mi3/1640 km3) max depth (804 ft/245 m), largest cities in New York USA ( Rochester NY ) and Ontario Canada (Hamilton, Kingston , Mississauga, Oshawa, Toronto ).

Great Lakes Waterway's locks, canals and channels

Great Lakes Waterway's primary connecting rivers and canals are Chicago and Calumet rivers (connecting to Mississippi River), St Marys River (Soo Locks/interconnects Superior and Huron), Mackinac Straits (Michigan and Huron), St Clair River (Huron and St Clair), Detroit River (St Clair to Erie), Niagara River (Niagara Falls/Erie and Ontario), Welland Canal (Erie and Ontario), and St Lawrence River (part of the St Lawrence Seaway/Ontario to St Lawrence Gulf-Atlantic Ocean).

The Waterway has two main lock systems - Montreal to Lake Ontario (2x American plus 5x Canadian locks) and Welland Canal (8x Canadian locks).

The Seaway canal system comprises 5x canals (15x locks) - South Shore Canal (2x locks/connects Montreal with St Louis Lake), Beauharnois Canal (2x locks/interlinks lakes St Louis and St Francis), Wiley-Dondero Canal (2x locks/connects to St Lawrence Lake), Iroquois Canal (1x lock), Welland Canal (8x locks/interlinks lakes Ontario and Erie).

Due to the locks' sizes/capacity, the Great Lakes Waterway provides access to vessels with max LOA length 740 ft (226 m) and max width/beam 78 ft (24 m). Each lock fills with ~91 million L of water (~24M US gallons) in 7-10 min. Passing through a lock takes a ship ~45 min.

Typical cargoes shipped via the Great Lakes Waterway include breakbulk steel (beams, coils, slabs), project cargoes (machinery, windfarm components), dry-bulk (fertilizers, grains, aggregates), liquid-bulk (chemistry and petroleum products, biofuels), containerized cargoes ( boxships carrying TEU-containers).

For regularly scheduled dredging (cleaning and deepening) works along the waterway is often contracted Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company LLC (1890-founded, Houston Texas-based heavy construction contractor). The company is currently ranked the USA's largest provider of dredging and land reclamation works and demolition.

Great Lakes cruise routes

The post- COVID 2022 was the most successful/record-breaking year for voyages on the Great Lakes. The season featured ~150,000 cruise ship tourists (+25% over 2019) served by 9x boats and producing an economic impact of US$125+ million.

For season 2023, the Great Lakes ports expected ~170,000 cruise tourists (+15% over 2022) with an estimated economic impact ~US$180M.

In March 2024 was announced the forecast for season 2024, featuring ~600 port visits/cruise ship calls with an estimated 140,000+ passengers and economic impact US$200+ million (~50% increase over 2022).

Currently, the largest by capacity Great Lakes cruise companies are Viking Cruises USA (ships Viking Octantis , Viking Polaris ), Pearl Seas Cruises ( Pearl Mist ), and the Canadian company St Lawrence Cruise Lines ( Canadian Empress ). Other travel brands that offer Great Lakes voyages are PONANT and Tauck ( fleet ).

'Our love for the water': New owners taking on Huron Lady II this season

lake huron cruises

When the Huron Lady II’s first sightseeing voyage of the season heads out on May 25, it’ll be under new ownership.

Under Captain Walker Yacht Services, couple Dustin and Kristy Walker, of Chesterfield, are taking over the longtime Blue Water staple — both kicking off a second career for each, as well as taking advantage of a deep family love for spending time on the water.

“I had always joked that maybe we would buy it someday as our second career. I just didn’t think it would happen this soon,” Kristy Walker said with a laugh on Thursday.

Dustin Walker, who couldn’t be immediately reached as of Friday, grew up in St. Clair and worked in Port Huron, Kristy said. The couple had also spent a lot of family vacations staying in harbors and marinas, “bebopping around,” on Lake Huron and the St. Clair River — all important pieces connecting to her husband’s roots as they started and grew their family.

“So, when he was ready to be done with the mortgage-lending side of business, his kind of second career path was he was going to get his captain’s license,” she said. Dustin spent the summer of 2019 working on the Huron Lady and began driving for former owner Jenny Ciolek the next year.

Now, Kristy said they’re excited for their three teenage daughters to see them taking on this next adventure, running the Huron Lady together, taking the risk and being their own boss.

“Really, the whole reason behind it is our love for the water,” she said, “the memories you make out on the water, how beautiful everything is right in our own backyard in this community.”

The original Huron Lady began boat excursions in the mid-1990s with Capt. John and Camille Rigney, purchasing the Huron Lady II in 1999.

Ciolek had manned, owned and operated the current Huron Lady since 2011 before passing the business to the Walkers around the start of this year.

“It’s a great business. I loved running it and owning it. But my husband and I are moving toward retirement age,” she said. “So, we had kind of talked about, at some point, we would need to try to find a buyer for the business and somebody who would do a good job. And hopefully, keep it in the community. Just through conversation, Dustin Walker and I talked about it, and he and his wife were interested. So, we kind of started moving forward with that, and Jan. 8, it was final.”

Ciolek said she’ll continue her other longtime gig as a co-host and producer for the PBS television program, “Michigan Out of Doors.” She also said she was looking forward to spending more time with family and a new grandchild.

The Huron Lady II vessel will remain docked on the Black River in front of Bootleggers Axe Co. and Wings Etc. when the season kicks off. The officially listed address is 102 Huron Ave.

Tours will formally begin at 1 p.m. on May 25, and Kristy Walker said they’ll hold a blessing of the vessel earlier that day at 10 a.m. Currently, it was in nearby boat storage.

In addition to keeping the traditional public sightseeing cruises, specialty cruises, and participating in local events like Sturgeon Fest, Kristy said they’ll have a few new things in store for visitors and local residents.

“We’re bringing back the dinner cruises. That really only stopped because of COVID,” she said. “… We’re going to have two different options for people. They can either dine on board with us or they can cruise down to St. Clair and dine at the Voyager. We’re also going to announce brunch cruises soon.”

EAST TAWAS, MI — A conservation organization hopes to recruit more people to monitor piping plovers, the once-endangered species of shorebird now flourishing near the Great Lakes.

Huron Pines, an Alpena-based group, plans to host training sessions for prospective monitors Saturday, April 20, at Tawas Point State Park Pavilion , 686 Tawas Beach Road in East Tawas.

The first two-hour session kicks off at 10 a.m. when trainers plan to teach participants the basics of collecting data and how to use equipment for monitoring the birds. At 1 p.m., a second session will detail the evolving status of the piping plover in Michigan.

Interested participants can register via a form on the Huron Pines website .

The website indicates Huron Pines representatives want to recruit monitors to focus on Lake Huron-neighboring communities that previously hosted piping plover nests, including Tawas, Cheboygan and Oscoda.

Last year was a record year for Great Lakes piping plovers , a species first federally listed as endangered in 1985. Scientists at one point in 2023 counted 80 unique breeding pairs across all five Great Lakes, where they monitored 85 nests. That’s eight more pairs than 2022 and the most since the species was first added to the federal Endangered Species List.
