Are vacation packages worth it.

How much do vacation packages cost?

The exact cost of a vacation package varies based on various factors such as destination, accommodation quality, flight class, and even the time of year you visit. The type of vacation you embark on can also affect cost with options like family packages and all-inclusive packages . You can search for your specific price range, too, with plenty of vacations under $1,000 , for example.

How to choose your vacation package?

To find the best vacation package, you'll need to consider the type of vacation you're looking to enjoy and the destination. Using the site's search function, you can find a wide variety of packages available for your chosen vacation location, while search filters can narrow down options based on vacation type. Browse our deals now.

How to find cheap vacation packages?

If you're looking to save, be sure to set filters for any budget limitations you may have in your search. Additionally, you can sort by price to automatically put the cheapest options first in your search results. Weekend getaway packages can be relatively inexpensive as well if you are looking for cheap getaways.

How to vacation on a budget?

Budget-friendly travel is easy when you book with Expedia, as we can help you keep prices low via search filters, but that's not all. There are general trends to keep in mind regarding prices, such as travel packages generally being cheaper during the off-season of your vacation destination. Additionally, the higher the quality amenities you opt for, the higher the price typically is.

How to get great vacation deals?

Vacation deals are common with Expedia, as we offer plenty of discounts on great packages, with packages already being a deal compared to booking hotels and flights separately.

How to find last-minute vacation deals?

To book last-minute vacation trips, simply input your travel dates into the search and see what's available at that time for your destination. You can still filter based on virtually anything you can imagine, including amenities, price, star rating, and more.

Where should I go on vacation?

Booking a Hawaii vacation package is especially popular with all sorts of travelers, whether it's families or couples, and Disney World packages have much to offer for families. Consider the kind of vacation you're looking for to determine the perfect destination.

What are some of the best vacation spots?

Top vacation spots include cheap Caribbean vacations and European vacation packages . With rich culture, history, and stunning natural beauty, a vacation package to these destinations can provide an unforgettable adventure.

Where to go on a vacation in the US?

Staying in the US still offers easy access to great vacation places with Vegas packages and a Grand Canyon vacation being popular choices among other options. Whether you’re seeking the thrills of the Vegas Strip or the majestic views of the Grand Canyon, browse your options today.

Where to go on vacation on a budget?

Cheap vacation ideas can still take you to a variety of great cheap vacation destinations, including Yellowstone vacations and Glacier National Park vacations . Parks and outdoor experiences tend to be free, so national park vacations are excellent for a budget-friendly trip.

What are some great all-inclusive vacation packages?

All-inclusive vacations to the Bahamas and all-inclusive vacations to Cancun are some of the best options available, putting you in a Caribbean paradise. However, all-inclusive vacations are more varied than you might think, with worldwide options.

What are the best destinations for a family vacation?

Traveling with kids means you'll need to find fun for the whole family, and Orlando vacation packages can put you and your little ones in the world's theme park capital. Of course, a vacation package to Anaheim offers a similar experience on the West coast.

Where should I go on vacation this summer?

If you're looking to embrace the season, head to the beach with a summer vacation package to Destin . Of course, you may be more interested in escaping the heat with something like a vacation package to Vancouver .

How to find cheap beach vacations?

In your search, you can apply search filters for beach trip packages and sort your results by price to see the cheap vacation options first. With those standards, you can find amazing cheap trips with beach vacation packages like vacation packages to Panama City and vacation packages to Myrtle Beach .

What are some great couples' vacations?

Traveling with your partner means a more romantic adventure, which is easy when you book vacation packages to Honolulu . However, you can always opt for the classics and get a vacation package to Paris . Even a simple 3-day cheap getaway can be suitable.

What are the best destinations for a luxury vacation?

One of the best destinations for luxury is a Las Vegas vacation package , as the city was essentially designed to make visitors feel luxurious. Of course, a Lake Tahoe vacation package can be just as fulfilling as a more outdoor-oriented experience. Golf vacations also tend to be quite elegant.

How to find great Christmas vacation packages?

To find an excellent package for a Christmas vacation, simply put your travel dates into the search and discover what's available. Vacation packages to New York and vacation packages to Chicago are trendy around Christmas.

Where to get ski vacation packages?

Ski vacation packages are readily available on Expedia, including vacation packages to Aspen , vacation packages to Vail , and packages to other notable ski resorts. Check out the deals now and book your next ski vacation today.

Can I cancel my vacation package with Expedia?

Yes, you can cancel your vacation package via your itinerary page on Expedia or by contacting customer service. Remember that some packages are fully refundable, but the details vary based on each unique booking. A fully refundable package may depend on how far out from the travel dates you're canceling and what airline you are travelling with.

Why should I book my vacation package with Expedia?

Booking with Expedia makes it easy to plan your entire vacation in advance. Vacation packages with airfare included can also feature a rental car and even activities in some cases, with discounts typically coming with booking more than one aspect of your trip at a time. What our travelers say about their multi-country tours

Tips for traveling on multi-country trips.

Our multi-country tours cover almost every corner of the globe, so choosing the perfect trip might seem like a daunting task. That's why our expert Tour Consultants are here to help you find your dream tour.

A multi-destination trip can mean anything from taking a tour of U.S. and Canadian National Parks to exploring festive Christmas markets in Europe to tasting the flavors of South America —the adventure is really up to you!

One of the biggest benefits of a multi-destination vacation is that you’ll visit several countries in one trip. Experiencing different cultures, cuisines, and languages is all part of multiple country travel—and when you choose one of our multi-country trips, you can focus on these new experiences without worrying about the logistics.

Our multiple destination vacation packages include transportation between countries, which could mean flights, train rides, or even overnight cruises! We’ll also work with you to make sure your passport and any necessary visas are all set before you depart, so you don’t have to navigate any requirements on your own. Multiple country travel is all about getting the most out of your journey, and we’re here to help you do just that.

Whether it’s a multi-city vacation or a trip that takes you across a continent, the best packing advice is always “bring layers and pack light.” One checked suitcase and a carry-on bag is a good rule of thumb, especially on a multi-destination trip where you can expect to be moving from place to place. You’ll also want comfortable walking shoes, and rain or winter-weather gear depending on your destination.

With any of our tours, including our multi-city vacation packages, you’ll receive more detailed information about your destinations before you depart. That way, you can perfectly plan for whatever adventure lies ahead.

All you need to know about Multi-Center Vacations

How do i plan a multi center vacation.

The easiest way to plan a multi destination vacation is to first pick your dream destinations that tick off all your bucket list travel goals. Check out our multi center vacations for inspiration, then all you have to do is choose your favorite Trafalgar trip, book your flights, pack your bags, and you’re on your way to explore the world!

Is twin city and multi center vacation the same?

A multi center and twin center vacation are very similar. The only difference is that a twin center or twin city vacation will cover two spectacular destinations in one trip, rather than multiple countries. Some of our favorite two center vacations take you to Switzerland and Austria, or Italy and Greece, or even Down Under to hit both Australia and New Zealand in one special trip.

How can I travel to multiple cities in one trip?

Our multi center vacations take you across multiple cities and countries, like our trips to Latin America that hit Peru, Chile, Argentina and Brazil in one iconic vacation, and our tours to Africa that take in Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar. There’s also our European blockbuster trips that can see you exploring over 10 countries and more than 30 cities on one trip!

How to book a multi destination flight?

The best way to book a multi destination flight is to speak to the expert team at Trafalgar. We know all the most efficient flight routes and can customise your flights to suit your multi center vacation. The Best Destinations in the World: The Gold List 2022

By CNT Editors

Goa India

There are three great lists annually in  Condé Nast Traveler,  all of which have changed due to the events of the last two years: the Readers’ Choice Awards , which you, our beloved audience, select; the Hot List , which compiles the new and notable of the previous year; and this one, which is ultimately about the places and experiences our editors carry in their hearts. This year, when we say  our editors,  we mean  CNT ’s entire global crew, working in locations from California to Beijing ; we’ve also expanded the parameters of the list to include not just the hotels and cruises you’ve seen in years past, but also the destinations we treasure. The Gold List is, more than ever, made by humans for other humans—something we need more than ever in this day and age. Here, our favorite destinations in the world.

Read the complete set of Gold List winners   here .

All listings featured in this story are independently selected by our editors. However, when you book something through our retail links, we may earn an affiliate commission.

Cholula Puebla Mexico

Puebla, Mexico

I love when I can feel familiar with a new place in 48 hours. In Puebla , Mexico’s historic, fourth-largest city, all the spots you want to hit are walking distance within its center, itself a tidy sprawl of bright pink and yellow villas and small plazas. That includes food markets for a crispy cemita (a schnitzel-style sandwich with all the fixings); the gilded Capilla del Rosario and the city’s famed talavera, or ceramic houses; I stayed for close to an hour watching the row of artisans hand-paint and hand-fire their mugs, plates, and vases at Uriarte Talavera. Before the pandemic, tourism was just starting to happen here, and the city was in that sweet spot of supporting a new breed of traveler, like with the artisanal-inspired Cartesiano hotel, but without muting any of its essence for international business. I liked that I had to use my shoddy Spanish with barkeeps and store owners. And that sitting in those plazas meant a front-row seat to daily Poblano life: vendors selling sliced cucumber spices with cayenne, old-timers playing dominos. Puebla felt like a special somewhere on the verge of discovery in a country with pockets already turned over to the masses. My guess with all that’s happened this past year is that it still does. —Erin Florio

Rio de Janeiro Brazil

Rio de Janeiro

If you were to hook the city of Rio de Janeiro up to a cardiogram, the needle would swing off the page. The city thrums with live samba and bossa nova at all hours of the day; the bustling streets, bookended by the dramatic rise of granite monoliths on one end and the pounding waves of the Atlantic on the other, have a pulse all their own. It's easy to feel this when you're amid throngs of colorfully clad cariocas —I feel it most swaying to the live music at Pedra do Sal on Monday nights, or when, perched in the leafy hilltop neighborhood of Santa Teresa, I hear people in neighborhoods below lean out their windows to cheer when Flamengo scores a goal. It's a complicated city, with plenty of issues—insecurity, corruption, inequity, to name just a few—but there's a premium on joy and celebration that isn't reserved for Carnaval . There are few places in the world where you know you couldn't possibly be anywhere else, and whenever I hear the whole of Arpoador beach break into applause as the sun sets in summer, I'm reminded that Rio is one of them. —Megan Spurrell

Alentejo Vicente Coast

Alentejo, Portugal

I call the road to the sea through Portugal’s Alentejo region the place where the beatniks read Pessoa; you can imagine Kerouac breezing through its small hotels, surf camps, and villages scattered with craft shops, markets, and bohemian bars. For me it’s a place of happiness. There are boutique hotels like São Lourenço do Barrocal and Dá Licença and olive groves, cork oaks, and infinite horizons. The road ends at Vicentine Coast National Park, a wild, protected coastline in southern Europe. A paradise for surfers , it has electrifying sunsets, but the icy waters stop it from ever getting too crowded. —David Moralejo

Svalbard Norway

Svalbard, Norway

Arctic Svalbard —whose capital, Longyearbyen, is the world’s northernmost town—is like nowhere else I’ve been. On the one hand, it’s a deep-nature Scandi fantasy of snowmobiles, Northern Lights, ski-touring along glacial valleys, and surprisingly smart boutiques with stacked wine cellars. But there’s also a compelling strangeness to this international settlement, where no one is born and no one dies. There are the Soviet mining towns with their Lenin busts, whether abandoned or (even weirder) still working; the Svalbard Global Seed Vault, which preempts a coming apocalypse; it’s advisable to leave Longyearbyen with a shotgun, in case of polar-bear attack. As much as a destination, it’s a journey into the heart of the climate crisis, with academics from across the world doing game-changing research here. I’m itching to go again—to escape but also to think and connect, which is what happens in all the best places. —Toby Skinner

Goa India

My first trip to Goa as a college student was wrapped in dreams of homemade chorizo and reliving moments from the cult Bollywood coming-of-age film Dil Chahta Hai . Many trips and feni cocktails later, Goa remained a respite for my city-weary bones. The state straddles its multicultural past and present, trading up ’60s hippie markets for hipster boutiques while keeping its old-world Indian and Portuguese traditions intact. Simple fish-curry plates, aunties doing an impromptu jig to fado, old-timers squabbling over their favorite Goan soccer club, and the right freshness of bread coexist with edgy global menus, alt-music gigs, and all that is artisanal and arty. The ocean changes color from one season to the next, the multi-color sunsets never repeat, and like many travelers, I continue to return and find my salve in sunshine, sea, and susegad —the quintessential Goan idea of the slow, easy, and good life. —Diya Kohl

Plettenberg Bay South Africa

Plettenberg Bay, South Africa

Plettenberg Bay is South Africa's summer playground, and I, a Capetonian, would drive the 186-mile coastal path along the scenic Garden Route each year to join the fun. The bohemian seaside town sits atop a sheltered bay, where a jumble of hipster coffee shops, seafood restaurants, and kitsch boutiques tumble down onto fynbos-covered cliffs—where a slew of new hotels like The Robberg Beach Lodge sit beside grandes dames like The Plettenberg Hotel . Pretty young things like to celebrate the end of matric student exams, where hedonism sweeps across the bay, while dolphin and whale watches come during the languid, warm winter months. Venture just outside Plett to find the luxury Tsala Treetop Lodge , a manicured Gary Player golf course, indigenous Keurbooms River Nature Reserve, the Plett Polo Club on the Kurland Estate, and a host of animal sanctuaries to meet cheetahs, elephants, and monkeys. But above all, come for the glorious golden beaches. Central Beach—dotted with bars—surfy Lookout Beach, and the eerie, mist-covered sands of Robberg Nature Reserve. Search hard enough and you might stumble on a sand dollar—the symbol of Plettenberg Bay, thought to bring eternal luck. —Isabella Sullivan

Scottsdale Arizona

When I can’t take another minute of winter, I head to Scottsdale. As, historically, do the day-drinking spring breakers and the far less rowdy snowbirds. Recently, though, the Valley of the Sun has come into its own, claiming its stunning desert setting and Southwest culture in new ways. If I’m bringing the kids, the 1929 Frank Lloyd Wright–designed grande dame The Arizona Biltmore, A Waldorf Astoria Resort (on the border of Scottsdale and Phoenix), is my place. It has sprawling grounds and seven pools, one with a legitimate waterslide, and just underwent a much-needed facelift. Sanctuary Camelback Mountain Resort , terraced into the side of its namesake adobe-hued mountain, has my favorite spa in town. Its adults-only pool on weekends and easy access to sunrise hiking give me plenty of excuses to leave the kids at home. Solo or with family, I can always bank on sunshine, a great exhibit at Phoenix’s nearby Desert Botanical Garden, and excellent Sonoran-style Mexican food. —Rebecca Misner

Tuscany Val Graziosa

Val Graziosa, Italy

I am a frequent traveler to Val Graziosa, a valley near the Pisan mountains and a part of Tuscany relatively unknown and terribly beautiful. Here there is Monte Pisano—“ che i Pisan veder Lucca non ponno, ” the poet Dante said, a small group of mountains that hides Lucca from Pisa and makes it impossible for the Pisan locals to see the city of Lucca. There are olive trees everywhere, producing the best olive oil on Earth in a splendid countryside. I love to walk around the surroundings of Montemagno—please read the book Maledetti Toscani, by Curzio Malaparte, and you will understand a lot about Italians from this region. I love to go to the grocery store in Patrizia for a glass of wine (the one and only épicerie of the village) and then to Certosa di Calci, a 14th-century monastery, and one of the many secret beauties in my crazy country of Italy. —Maddalena Fosati

Chiang Mai Thailand

Chiang Mai, Thailand

When I first went to Chiang Mai, I intended to stay a couple of nights and ended up staying more than a week; for me, that trip is a reminder of travel at its most impulsive and impetuous: the freedom to move on when you feel like it. There’s no beach pressure here, and inland Thailand always feels more interesting than the obvious hits of the beachfront. And, away from the beaches, there's the sense of a modern Thai city where young creatives are carving out a contemporary aesthetic, with the energy that a large student population gives a city. —Rick Jordan

New ways to plan your vacation on the go

Mar 08, 2016

[[read-time]] min read

Article's hero media

With spring around the corner, it’s time to look forward to sunnier skies—and summer getaways. These days, mobile phones make it easier than ever for you to sneak in vacation dreaming and planning here and there—in line at the coffee shop, waiting at the doctor’s office, or on your way to meet a friend. In fact, last year, according to our internal data for google.com, we saw a whopping 50 percent increase in travel-related questions on mobile phones. But even as that number grows, it can be hard to get all the right information in one place on a small screen. There are a dizzying number of questions to answer when planning a trip: What are the best places to visit? What time of year is good to go? What kind of prices can I expect? Today we’re introducing something to make all this easier: Destinations on Google, which helps you discover and plan your next vacation, right from Google Search on your phone.

Here’s how it works: Search with Google on your mobile phone for the continent, country, or state you’d like to travel to and add the word “destination” to see an easy-to-browse collection of options. Destinations integrates a deep understanding of all the places in the world with  Google Flights  and  Hotel search , so you can see available flight and hotel prices  instantly . So instead of jumping between a dozen links or tabs to get the information you need, you can sit back and scroll—and leave the heavy lifting to us.

To find a vacation that’s just your style, search for a destination and something you’d like to do there, like “spain surfing,” “new zealand hiking,” or “colorado skiing.” We’ll suggest spots that fit with your hobbies and interests.

Say you’re planning to take some time off in June or July, but you haven’t decided exactly when to go. The “Flexible Dates” filter lets you refine your results by month, so you can see when fares and rates are lowest within the time range you want, across multiple destinations.

Want to avoid crowds or bad weather? Select any destination and tap the “Explore” tab to see what the weather is like year-round and when your destination is most popular, based on historic visits from other travelers.

Once you've selected a destination, tap "Plan a trip" to see rates for hotels and flights. We show you highs and lows for the next six months, so you can find the right price tag for you. And as you slide left or right, the results instantly update with real-time fares and rates, pulling from the trillions of flight itineraries and hotels we price every day on  Google Flights  and  Hotel search . You can also tap the pencil icon to customize results further with flight and hotel preferences, including number of stops, hotel class, and number of travelers.

Whether you’ve got five days or 12, don’t fret about figuring out where to go first or which spots you can’t miss. Simply search for “Spain travel,” and click the blue arrow icon to browse the most frequently traveled itineraries. The suggested itineraries are based on historic visits by other travelers to those places, so you can use the wisdom of the crowd and save time researching.

Let Destinations on Google make it smooth sailing to your next vacation. Bon voyage!

My Mom, Sisters, and I Take a Trip Together Every Year — These Are the 15 Items We Always Pack

Whether we're headed to Europe or Asia, these must-haves are at the top of our packing lists.

Travel + Leisure / Teddy Minford

I’ve been traveling with my mom and sisters before I was born. When my mom was eight months pregnant with me, our family moved from the U.S. to the U.K. Since my mom was too pregnant to fly, she hopped on Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth II for the transatlantic crossing, bringing along my three sisters, who were all under the age of 10 .

We spent our childhoods crammed in the back of a car as we road-tripped through Europe to go skiing in the winter, or flew back to the States to spend summers at my grandmother’s house near the Jersey Shore. Now, as adults, my mom and my sisters are still my favorite travel companions. We don’t live near each other, so we’re just as likely to meet up for a vacation at my mom’s house in Idaho as we are to rendezvous in Porto, Palawan, or Provence.

In our lifetime of traveling together, we’ve perfected the art of packing. Below, you'll find the 15 travel essentials we rely on for successful multi-generational trips. From versatile travel clothes and UPF-protective accessories to useful gadgets , these must-haves keep us safe and comfortable wherever we go together.

Hiking Shoes

On trips with my mom and sisters, our main objective is usually to go on a really long walk, whether that means traipsing 30,000 steps through Paris or hiking in Montana. Everyone in my family (except for me) owns a pair of Hokas and they talk about them as if they’re the holy grail of shoes. I have yet to join the club, but I have to admit I’m Hoka-curious, especially seeing how easily my mom can zoom up hills — even after a hip replacement. She owns a neon-accented pair of high-tops, but I think I’d probably go with a more basic style like the Hoka Transport Shoes , which would easily pass for everyday sneakers in a pinch.

A Versatile Black Dress

You never know where the night will take you, so it's important to travel with something nice enough to wear to a Michelin-starred restaurant or a cocktail bar at a fancy hotel. It’s easier to dress something up with jewelry and a shawl than to pack a formal gown, so we’re all fans of the versatile black dress. My mom’s favorite is one she bought at Anthropologie years ago, and my sister, Monica, has a simple black sheath dress (similar to this satiny, almost-sold-out, V-neck frock from Madewell ) that works as both a beach-appropriate bathing suit cover-up and an elegant evening dress.

This silk dress from Quince is a travel staple for my sister, Abby. The lightweight, washable, stretch-silk fabric ensures it packs up small (it looks good with a few wrinkles, don't worry). You can wear it for a day of sightseeing with a pair of sneakers or dress it up with heels and earrings for an event or dinner out (she’s even worn it to a destination wedding ).

Travel + Leisure / Teddy Minford

Comfy Travel Pants

Ripley Rader

All of us have been served targeted ads for Ripley Rader pants on Instagram, but I was the first to cave. I now own them in multiple colors and, while I’m embarrassed to have spent nearly $200 on a pair of lounge pants, I have yet to find a better alternative (and now, I’ve turned my whole family onto them). The wide-leg pants are universally flattering and fit the bill for a comfortable travel look that’s still polished and put together, especially when paired with a button-down. If you can't justify the price tag, check out these Adrianna Papell lookalikes at Amazon; they're on sale for $33.

A Packable Down Jacket

I live in New York, my mom lives in Idaho, and two of my sisters live in Montana. Unless we’re going on a ski trip, we usually travel somewhere warmer than home, especially in the winter. But, that doesn't mean that outerwear isn't at the top of our packing lists. We all travel with a packable down jacket that’s cozy enough to keep us toasty during the commute to the airport, but lightweight enough to stuff into a pouch for the duration of the trip. My mom’s favorite travel jacket is from Stio , and my sister Abby and I love our puffers from Uniqlo — though, I have my eye on this colorful option from Cotopaxi .

Lightweight Cashmere Sweater

One thing I never knew about cashmere until the material is that it’s warmer than it looks — almost too warm sometimes. This makes it a convenient travel staple since you get an extra-warm layer without wasting space in your suitcase on a heavy jacket. On nearly every trip, my mom can be counted on to have her trusty navy blue cashmere sweater in her bag, similar to this affordable cashmere crewneck from Everlane . But, if you're shopping on a budget, there's a wallet-friendly version of the classic sweater at Quince that's just $50.

A Packable Hat

My mom’s signature travel accessory is this packable hat (in royal blue) from Scala. It has a UPF 50 rating so you can get away without putting on sunscreen when you’re feeling lazy. Though I wasn't a fan of the style when my mom first started rocking it, I have to admit that I’ve been influenced; I keep considering getting one just because it’s so easy to pack and does a great job of protecting your skin.

My mom is weirdly obsessed with ironing. If we get to a hotel or rental with an ironing board, she will iron all of the clothes in her suitcase, even if we’re packing up and leaving the next day. Whether or not a hotel room has an ironing board is a make-or-break criterion for her. Oddly, I don’t even own an iron or ironing board at home, so this is not a trait I inherited. Since she can’t travel with her own ironing board, the next best thing is a top-of-the-line portable steamer from Steamery . Similarly, the Bear Steamer , which is $40 at Amazon, will get those pesky wrinkles out of your favorite travel clothes fast.

A Water Bottle

A trait I did inherit is that I'm incredibly picky about the taste of my drinking water. My main reason for having the Delta credit card is that I prefer to fill up my water bottle there instead of the crusty-looking water fountains in JFK airport. I have a LifeStraw water bottle for camping, but my sister, Abby, brings hers everywhere since it can make any tap water taste good with its filtered straw. The double-wall insulated bottle filters bacteria, parasites, microplastics, sand, dirt, and cloudiness in two stages to ensure clean, safe water.

I can’t remember which of us first started using Elta MD sunscreen (or whose dermatologists recommended they try it), but now we’re all fans of the tinted mineral sunscreen and bring it on every trip. It’s lightweight and offers mostly sheer coverage, and I’ll even use it in the evenings instead of makeup. I also have the waterproof version for beach vacations, which is a bit thicker and stickier, but stays on for hours.

Jewelry Case

Dagne Dover

My sister, Carly, wears a lot of big jewelry pieces, and one of her favorite travel accessories is a sturdy jewelry case similar to this one from Dagne Dover, which holds all of her bangle bracelets and dangly earrings and protects them from getting bent out of shape. Side note: My mom is no longer allowed to travel with jewelry because she’s left her jewelry case in the hotel too many times.

A Sleek Crossbody Purse

While Monica and I have been known to use a fanny pack in our travels, Abby absolutely refuses to. Instead, she prefers a slim crossbody bag similar to these options from Cuyana or Madewell that are just big enough to hold a phone, a wallet, and a passport (and small enough that the nicer flight attendants don’t count it as a dreaded “third item” when boarding).

A Travel Backpack

My sisters all have kids of their own now and have realized how important it is to be able to travel hands-free with a backpack instead of a tote bag. My sister, Carly, has one similar to Lululemon’s Wanderlust Backpack (which has now become a travel staple of mine). It holds everything you need for the plane and fits nicely under the airplane seat, making it ideal for long journeys.

A Space-saving Toiletry Kit

Carly also swears by her Cadence travel container set for everything from face serum to vitamins. The multi-use leakproof canisters come in various sizes and fit together via magnets, and they don't take up any precious real estate in a suitcase or personal bag.

A Travel Pillow and Blanket

We grew up flying back and forth to Europe, so we’ve all mastered the art of staying comfortable on long-haul flights . My sister, Abby, and her three-year-old daughter (who has already been to eight countries) never fly without this ultralight travel pillow and a packable down blanket . The pillow is technically for backpacking, but it works great for the plane and weighs just 2.1 ounces.

Travel Games and Entertainment

Books are an essential part of our travels. We’ve started an informal sort of book club where we plan to read the same novel before the trip so we can talk about it. But we’re firmly divided when it comes to our reading formats. My mom and Monica are Kindle people , while the rest of us prefer paperback books. We've also never traveled without a deck of cards and, conveniently, our favorite card game, Oh Hell, requires five players. We also love a good game of Backgammon , which tends to involve less back-stabbing and spiteful grudges than Oh Hell — overall, it's a safer option for already hectic travel days.
