From Mandarin to Paris, Eduardo Garcia chases Olympic marathon dream

Former mustangs, uf runner to race for u.s. virgin islands.

dream travel marathon

There's a long list of cities for Eduardo Garcia's athletic journey, and it keeps on growing.

Like Jacksonville, where it all began. Gainesville, where he began his race to the next level. New York City, Boston, Houston, Minneapolis. The Netherlands, and Turkey, and Peru, and Mexico….

"One thing about running," he said, "it's taken me to different places, and I'm always thankful to meet new people and see different cultures."

In weeks, he adds a new city to the list: Paris.

Thirteen years after graduating from Mandarin High School as an eight-time Gateway Conference champion, Garcia is scheduled to race the marathon at the Olympics while representing the United States Virgin Islands on the streets of Paris.

Garcia qualifies to compete for the U.S. Virgin Islands because his father, Frank, was born in Christiansted, St. Croix, and grew up there before entering the Navy.

Through the landmarks of Paris, past Versailles and over the Seine, the road will carry Garcia to an Olympic finish through some 26.2 miles at the marathon on Aug. 10.

"I'm definitely looking forward to the whole experience, and the race itself," he said in a phone interview from training in North Carolina.. "I want to go out there and get to compete with the best runners in the world, and represent the Virgin Islands on a big stage."

STARTING ON THE ROAD

Garcia got off to a running start in Jacksonville.

His older brother, Francisco, had previously earned Gateway Conference honors running for Wolfson, and by the time Eduardo made his way to Greenland Road as a freshman in 2007, Mandarin cross country coach Jim Schmitt already knew he was about to get a runner with both speed and polish.

"We saw ourselves as kind of a ragtag, rough-and-ready kind of team," Schmitt said. "We had a lot of guys who were like Ford trucks, and then Eduardo was like a Jaguar."

Already third in the county as a freshman, Garcia ended up lifting eight Gateway Conference championships: three in cross country from 2008-10, the 1,600 meters in the same three years and the 3,200 in 2009 and 2011.

At Mandarin, he steadily climbed up the statewide rankings — a third-place finish in the Florida High School Athletic Association Class 4A cross country championships in 2010, followed by a fourth place in the 1,600 and a seventh in the 3,200 the following spring. He also got the chance to test his skills at larger meets like the Golden South Classic in Orlando and the Foot Locker South Regional in Charlotte, N.C.

Still, even after signing to run for the University of Florida, his career didn't show immediate signs of nearing Olympic status.

"As a kid, I always had it as a goal to go there," he said. "But as I started progressing with running, you start to doubt whether this can become a reality. Then around 2014, I started thinking that if I keep running, there's a chance I could actually do this.

"Now that it's actually happening, it's a full-circle thing for sure."

At Florida, he competed only sporadically in his first two years. Then, in 2014, he picked up the pace. Garcia won the SEC Championship at the 10,000 in 2015, and closed his Gators career sixth on Florida's all-time list with a 14:06.17 in the indoor 5,000.

More than a decade after Garcia's Mandarin graduation, Schmitt — who said he still keeps a photo of Garcia from his UF days inside his classroom — said the runner's legacy still leaves an impact at Mandarin.

"He was a perfect athlete to coach. He listens, he respects, and he understands the tradition," Schmitt said. "He gets that you are a part of something bigger... he's always been a mature, humble, shut-up-and-run kind of kid."

EYES ON THE ISLANDS

As Garcia's times accelerated, his running horizons expanded.

Around 2014, during his sophomore year at Florida, Garcia said that he made initial contact with Virgin Islands track and field authorities about the possibility of competing for the team at international level. Once he received the call, he began his international running career at the Central American and Caribbean Games, and he hasn't slowed down.

"It's definitely special for me to be able to represent where he's [his father] from," he said.

Once Garcia's NCAA eligibility expired in 2016, he made the decision to shift from the track to road racing. That meant a step up in distance, and a change in approach.

He raced his first marathon in 2017 in the Netherlands in Rotterdam, and since then, he's competed in around a half-dozen other marathon venues, including New York, Boston and the Pan American Games. In 2019, he broke a Virgin Islands record by crossing in 2:18.50 at the Chevron Houston Marathon, good for 22nd overall.

More frequently, he's taken on the half marathon, including setting a Virgin Islands record of 1:03.53 over the 13.1-mile distance this spring in Istanbul, Turkey.

"It's a lot more gradual than a track race, especially the longer the distance," he said. "Half marathons and up are much more controlled, more of a slow-burn effort. It requires a ton of focus and a lot of mental toughness."

INSIDE THE UNIVERSALITY RULES

While Garcia's times have been quick, and keep getting quicker, those times by themselves wouldn't have clinched an automatic spot in an Olympic field where the fastest of the fastest often cross the line just a notch above the two-hour mark.

Garcia's road to Paris came through World Athletics' universality system, which uses a ranking system to allocate Olympic berths to otherwise-unrepresented countries in three events — the 100-meter dash, the 800 and the marathon.

For Garcia, whose times have steadily improved in recent years, including a 10th-place finish at March's Gate River Run on his return to Jacksonville, the universality system became the lifeline for his Olympic dream.

Still, he had to wait for the official word on whether his efforts would land him a trip to Paris.

In May, Garcia received the word from the world governing body: He made the cut.

"When I found out the news, I was elated… this is the pinnacle of what I've been working for," he said.

WORKING OUT FOR PARIS

Since the word arrived in May, Garcia has been a man on the move.

For the past half-dozen years, he's lived in Greenville, S.C., racing events inside and outside the Southeast in the distinctive red, white and blue stripes of the Greenville Track Club.

Through varied across short and long distances, high and low elevations, plus sauna sessions to prepare for stifling midsummer humidity, he's preparing to adapt to the challenges to come in Paris.

Typical was his early-June training run in Tuxedo, N.C., just across the state line separating the Carolinas, where he took on a 9-mile loop that Garcia said resembles the marathon course in Paris.

"It was sort of a race test," he said. "I feel really good about how I ran, fueling every 5 miles."

France is far from flat: The marathon course in Paris will include a climb and a descent of more than 1,400 feet each, with a maximum gradient measured at 13.5 percent.

When he hits the road in France, he said, he will have plenty of family support from the sidelines, plus cheers from across the Atlantic Ocean in Jacksonville.

With every step of training now, Garcia is one step closer to the thrill of competition once again. This time, in the Olympics. This time, in Paris.

"I'm not as concerned about how fast I go [in terms of finishing time]. I want to compete and see how high on the list I can get, to push myself and go for it," Garcia said. "I have nothing to lose, and I'm excited to see what I can do."

Your dream family vacation: 5 fun-filled trips to book with hotel points

Tamara Gane

July 8, 2024 // By Tamara Gane

By Tamara Gane July 8, 2024

A great family vacation could include unforgettable memories at Walt Disney World Resort

A family vacation is more than an ordinary trip — it’s a chance to build memories that will last a lifetime. If you’ve been collecting hotel points, you can whisk your family to a fun-filled escape they’ll never forget.

Savvy travelers can book the best family vacation destinations in the U.S. with points. We’re talking about places like Lake Tahoe, Hawaii, and Orlando, to name a few. Here’s how.

What are hotel points?

Hotel points are a reward for participating in hotel loyalty programs. You can redeem them for valuable perks like free hotel stays, dining credits, and complimentary upgrades. They’re an incentive to give your repeat business to one hotel brand over all the others.

Advertisement Advertisement

How do you get hotel points?

The first step to earning hotel points is enrolling in a hotel loyalty program. It’s free and usually comes with additional benefits like free Wi-Fi. Once you’ve signed on, it’s easy to rack up points through activities like hotel stays, dining, special promotions, or spending with co-branded credit cards.

The more points you earn, the more you’ll have to spend on a family vacation or other travel experiences.

How many hotel points do you need for a free night?

The number of hotel points you need for a free night varies. Generally speaking, the more expensive the hotel, the more points you’ll need. In addition, you can expect to spend more points during peak season or dates when reservations are in heavy demand.

Are you ready to get started? We’ve curated a list of some of the best family vacation destinations you can book with hotel loyalty points.

Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada

You can't beat a family vacation by the clear, blue waters of Lake Tahoe

In Lake Tahoe, snow-topped mountains cast their reflection into one of the world’s deepest, bluest bodies of water. Voted as one of the best lakes in the U.S. in USA TODAY's 10Best Readers' Choice Awards, this is a place where you can truly choose your adventure with beaches, ski resorts, and hundreds of miles of hiking trails.

Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe

The Ritz-Carlton, Lake Tahoe represents the best of Lake Tahoe with a ski-in, ski-out location at Northstar Ski Resort plus an exclusive Lake Club on the beach. Other family-friendly amenities include a newly redesigned club lounge with stunning mountain views, a year-round heated pool, Topgolf Swing Suites, and Ritz Kid activities.

Standard rooms require 78,000 to 138,000 points a night.

Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa, and Casino

Families at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa, and Casino spend their days playing on a private beach across from the hotel, splashing in the pool, or engaging in a robust roster of rotating activities, from kayaking to archery.

Standard rooms require 17,000 to 23,000 points a night.

Holiday Inn Express South Lake Tahoe

Holiday Inn Express South Lake Tahoe offers wallet-friendly amenities like free parking, complimentary breakfast, and an outdoor pool. The convenient location on Lake Tahoe Boulevard is a short walk from the beach or the Heavenly Mountain Gondola.

Standard rooms require 17,000 to 99,000 points a night.

Orlando, Florida

Family vacation fun awaits in Orlando's Icon Park

Attractions like Walt Disney World Resort , Universal Orlando, Icon Park, and LEGOLAND Florida Resort make Orlando a bucket-list spot for a family vacation. Don’t get so caught up in the theme parks that you miss Lake Eola Park and the tantalizing downtown Orlando food scene.

Waldorf Astoria Orlando

Luxury and kid-friendly amenities go hand in hand at the Waldorf Astoria Orlando. It's located within Walt Disney World Resort and offers two swimming pools, a golf course, lawn games, a kids' club, and early access to the park.

Standard rooms require 70,000 to 168,000 points a night.

JW Marriott Orlando Bonnet Creek Resort and Spa

Your kids will have so much fun at JW Marriott Orlando Bonnet Creek Resort and Spa that they might not want to leave to go to the theme parks. Amenities include a Kids Conservatory Lounge with games and virtual reality headsets, a kids' club, pool, climbing wall, mini golf, and complimentary shuttle service back and forth to Walt Disney World Resort.

Standard rooms require 40,000 to 67,000 points a night.

Hyatt House across from Universal Orlando Resort

The oversized rooms at Hyatt House across from Universal Orlando Resort offer plenty of space for families to spread out. Most include kitchens, so you can save money preparing your meals. Other budget-friendly perks include complimentary breakfast, shuttle service to Universal Orlando Resort, and discounts on food and merchandise within the theme park.

Standard rooms require 9,000 to 15,000 points a night.

Park City, Utah

Park City is made for family vacation fun, on the slopes or off

It’s hard not to be wowed by Park City. From the Park City Town Lift running from the heart of the plaza to the astonishingly beautiful mountain scenery, there are no bad views in this upscale Utah community.

In winter, skiing, snowshoeing, and sledding take center stage. When the snow melts, hiking, biking, zip lines, and alpine coasters are a magnet for families.

Waldorf Astoria Park City

Skiers will rejoice in Waldorf Astoria Park City’s easy access to Park City Mountain via the Frostwood Gondola. Nestled on more than 7,300 acres, the resort offers hiking, horseback riding, and fly fishing. A swimming pool and Little Miners Camp keep the little ones entertained, while a luxurious spa caters to the adults in the family.

Standard rooms require 110,000 to 340,000 points a night.

Hotel Park City, Autograph Collection

Bonded babysitting services make Hotel Park City, Autograph Collection, the ideal choice for adults who want a little me time for spa treatments or shopping during their family vacation. Other family-friendly amenities include a swimming pool and adventure concierges to help you arrange everything from dinner reservations to whitewater rafting or snowmobiling excursions.

Standard rooms from 140,000 - 212,000 points a night.

Hyatt Place Park City

Hyatt Place Park City offers complimentary shuttle service to select ski resorts during your stay. If you don't bring gear, the on-site ski rental shop will hook you up. The year-round heated pool and complimentary breakfast are popular with families.

Standard rooms require 12,000 to 18,000 points a night.

A family vacation on Oahu is possible when you use hotel points

Warm weather, endless beaches, and gorgeous scenery have long made Hawaii a dream vacation destination. Oahu offers a wide selection of points hotels in Honolulu near attractions like Diamond Head State Monument, Waikiki Beach, and Pearl Harbor.

Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa

It’s hard to beat Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa’s beachfront location. If you can pull your kids away from the sand, family-friendly amenities include a swimming pool, packages with surf lessons, and family suites with lots of living space. Upgrade to add club access and enjoy complimentary breakfast, snacks, and evening hors d’oeuvres.

Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

Between a location steps away from the beach and an oceanview swimming pool, Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa is always a hit with families. Popular activities include an on-site luau and surf lessons for groups or individuals.

Standards rooms require 65,000 to 87,000 Marriott points a night.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Waikiki Beach Walk

A block from Waikiki Beach, Embassy Suites by Hilton Waikiki Beach Walk combines a stellar location and suite accommodations for families. The hotel also features an outdoor swimming pool, free breakfast, and a complimentary evening reception with drinks and appetizers.

Standard rooms require 70,000 to 372,000 points a night.

Washington, D.C.

Washington D.C. brims with free family activities

Families get a lot of bang for the buck in Washington, D.C., with free attractions like the Smithsonian museums — some of the best free museums in the country, as voted by 10Best readers. Whether your kiddos are interested in history, science, culture, or outdoor attractions like the Potomac River, the nation’s capital has something to keep them intrigued and entertained.

Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center

Gaylord National Resort and Convention Center offers close access to Washington, D.C., on the Maryland side of the Potomac River. Unique family activities include a swimming pool with a splash zone, scavenger hunts, and augmented reality experiences featuring endangered animals. If you’re visiting during the holidays, don’t miss the Christmas light show or ice tubing.

Standard rooms require 61,000 to 118,000 points a night.

Kimpton George Hotel

Kimpton George Hotel, located near the Capital Building and Union Station, makes traveling with an infant a breeze. The hotel provides a complimentary play yard with a bassinet and an infant tub for your stay. In addition, an on-demand family fridge allows you to store breast milk safely. Don’t miss happy hour in the lobby for free soft drinks or adult beverages in the evening.

Standard rooms require 28,000 to 89,000 points a night.

Hampton Inn Washington, D.C./White House

The Hampton Inn Washington, D.C./White House is a short walk from attractions like the White House, Washington Monument, and Smithsonian museums. A heated indoor pool provides year-round recreation, and a complimentary hot breakfast offers families plenty of fuel for a day of sightseeing.

Standard rooms require 30,000 to 50,000 points a night.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS It is up to each person to ensure they meet all travel requirements, including but not limited to vaccine status, passport validity, etc.

YOUR BOOKING DETAILS Everyone will receive their hotel booking details from me via email in late July. Please make sure that your hotel dates are correct.

The Group Hotels Holiday Inn Bloomsbury on Coram Street St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel on Euston Road

HOTEL CHANGES/DATES OF STAY CHANGES Changing your nights is typically only permitted until one month prior to arrival as the hotel will sell out.  Adding additional nights are typically not an issue since it will be before or after the marathon weekend. Canceling nights is not permitted by the hotel one month or less prior to arrival.  The later you request additional nights, potentially the higher the cost.

RACE BIB COLLECTION Each runner must pick up their own bib at the Running Show (race expo) using their QR code and either their driver’s license or their passport.  There is no race day bib collection.

QR codes will be sent closer to the time of the event.

RACE EXPO The race expo will be at ExCeL London Where: Royal Victoria Dock When: Wednesday Apr 17 from 10AM – 8PM Thursday Apr 18 from 10AM – 8 PM Friday Apr 19 from 10AM – 8PM Saturday Apr 20 from 8:30AM – 5:30PM *Times are subject to change

ExCeL is beside the Underground station “Custom House” and accessible by taking the Elizabeth Line in the direction of Abbey Wood

Click here for more information on the expo.

Bedding Rooms with single beds will only accommodate one person, adult or child per bed.  They are not near big enough for two people.

SIX STAR PORGRAM REQUIREMENTS w/ABBOTT WORLD MARATHON MAJORS Any runner who is completing their Six Star journey must have a complete profile on the Six Star website, claim all previous results and register no later than 14 days before the sixth race.  If you fail to do this, you will NOT receive the Six Star medal at the finish line.

Please  click here  to register or access your runner portal and complete the “Set for No.6” section.

SECURITY MEASURES/PROHIBITED ITEMS Everyone should be aware of the security measures that will be in place for the marathon as well as prohibited items. An example is that no one is permitted to bring bags (other than the clear plastic bags handed out at the race expo) to the start areas.

EMERGENCY CONTACT In case of an emergency only, my cell number is xxx-xxx-xxxx. If it is not an emergency, please email me.  This number will be added roughly one week prior to the event.

dream travel marathon

Race Day App/Runner Tracking App The TCS London Marathon will email runners directly once the app is available to download.

Your Bib Information Roughly 2 weeks prior to the marathon you will receive information on your start color.  Your bib number will be given to you at the Running Show (race expo).

You may not alter your start color, wave or corral. You may, however, potentially have this altered at the Running Show, but only with proof of a faster time.  Request this BEFORE they print your bib.

Offline Maps / SIM Cards You may want to consider downloading an offline map of London so that you are able to search for directions upon arrival, even if you don’t have WiFi.  Services like Google Maps works well for offline maps.

Or, consider purchasing a SIM card upon arrival.  Each airport sells them, but they only work if your phone is unlocked.  Purchasing a sim card is typically substantially less expensive than paying your phone service provider for a travel package or their roaming fees!

Getting to central London from LHR, LGW and STN Airports All three airports servicing London offer train service directly into the heart of London.  Staff and tickets are available upon arrival or simply use a service like Google Maps to plan your journey.  See below for more detailed instruction.

Checking in to Your Hotel As this is a group booking, no booking number/reference is required. Simply check in by name, with ID and with a credit card for incidentals.

Rooms We use seven different rooms at the Holiday Inn Bloomsbury and each has different bedding:

Double bed Standard -one double bed, maximum 2 people

Twin bed Standard -two single beds, maximum 2 people

DETAILED AIRPORT INSTRUCTIONS Use Google Maps or the likes to confirm your route before traveling as there may be changes, construction or a faster/better route.

From Heathrow: Roughly one hour Transfer to Terminal 2 or 3 Take the Underground. Piccadilly line in the direction of Cockfosters Get off at Russell Square for the Holiday Inn or the Kimpton Get off at Holborn for the DoubleTree Walk to the Holiday Inn (200m), the Kimpton (150m), DoubleTree (300m)

From Gatwick: Roughly one hour Take the Thameslink in the direction of Cambridge Get off at St Pancras International Transfer to the Underground, Piccadilly line in the direction of Heathrow Get off at Russell Square Walk to the Holiday Inn (200m), the Kimpton (150m) or the DoubleTree (400m)

ASSEMBLY AREA When you arrive at the Assembly Area, be sure that your bib is displayed as only runners may enter this area. Drop off your kit bag if you are using one. Only the clear plastic bags given out by the race organizers are permitted. You’ll collect your kit bag at the finish area.

You’ll line up in your respective waves. No one is permitted to move forwards in the waves and this is strictly policed. However, typically you are permitted to move backwards to run with someone else.  I say typically, as it will depend on whether you need to change color areas (not permitted).

WAVE STARTS As there will be 55,000+ runners and to alleviate the strain of having everyone start at the same time, the TCS London Marathon will be run in waves.

You will each be assigned a Color for your Assembly Area and then a Wave based on your estimated completion time. Even if you use the same estimated completion time as someone else, that doesn’t guarantee you’ll be in the same color or wave.

Do NOT email/phone the London Marathon and request a new color or wave change as they will not permit it.

THE COURSE Click here for extensive information on the race course, as well as a map.

THE FINISH AREA After crossing the finish line in front of Buckingham Palace, remember to collect your clear plastic kit bag.

PERSONALIZE YOUR SHIRT Are you interested in having Londoners personalize your run? Write your name on your race shirt (or masking tape) in large letters across your chest and people will call out to you and encourage you as you run!
