Activate Prior Animal Knowledge

Young children love learning about different types of animals. They are eager to share stories about pets in their homes and animals they may have seen in nature or at a zoo. An animal thematic unit is always a hit, and building upon previous knowledge is a great way to extend the learning. Begin the lesson during circle time with a group discussion about animals. Discuss movies they may have seen. (DreamWorks Animation’s Madagascar is always a favorite!) Where might you see wild animals? What kind of animals live in the jungle? Scaffolding the learning with guiding questions allows all students to access the activity on their level.

Preparing the Safari

To set up the classroom safari, there are a few things that will need to be done ahead of time. Initially, print off Safari name tags for each student (included in Day 9 of this Animals Unit ) and label them with student names. As additional literacy practice, the name tags could also be used as part of a morning welcome song, allowing each student to identify the names of the students in class.

safari definition for kindergarten

Next, print off the safari field journal and animal pictures. Make copies of the field journal for all students and provide pencils and clipboards. Tape the animal pictures around the room at a preschool eye level. Incorporating the labeled picture allows students to begin to understand that print has meaning.

Safari Animal Activities For Preschoolers

Sharing is caring!

My preschool aged daughter is spending her school time at home these days (hello 2020 quarantine). We are trying to keep her enriched with fun and easy play-through-learning experiences.  Making sure she has some basic art, math, reading, writing and play time in her day is challenging for my brain but important and crucial for hers. I thought it would be easier to come up with ideas if I first came up with a  “theme” of things she wanted to learn about. That got my wheels spinning in order to find age appropriate learning activities for her. So I searched and came up with tons of safari animal activities for preschoolers.

The safari animal theme was tied into our week. We did all sorts of arts and crafts, and mixed in learning lessons.

Safari Animal Activities For Preschoolers

Safari Animal Words

We talked a lot about different animals, and how some of them live on a farm, some in the sea, some in the jungle and some of them in the safari.

Using a piece of butcher block paper I asked my daughter to come up with a few animals that she thought were safari animals. As she said an animal, I asked her to tell me what the first letter of the word started with. I also asked if she could hear any other sounds in the word. We compiled a long list and kept coming back to it throughout the week.

Safari Writing

My daughter’s teacher encouraged us to continue with an at home journal, so we did a simple safari journal prompt. If I could have any safari animal as a pet it would be….. and I asked her to draw a picture of her and the animal playing together.

We also used some of these playdough m ats and first traced the letters, then used playdough to create the letter.

Safari Small World Play

Using objects from around the house, I set up all the elements in order for my daughter to create her very own safari habitat. This was so much fun, and she kept coming back to it over and over again all week. A perfect activity for imaginative play. Full details and setup can be found here .

Safari Puppet Show

We talked about how each story has to have a beginning, middle and an end. I decided to let my daughter come up with her own puppet show and story but told her it needed to have all the elements of a story.

I found free safari animal clipart online and printed them out on a single piece of paper. I drew a circle around each animal and asked my daughter to cut them out.

animal activities for kids

We then placed the animal on top of a craft stick with a glue stick.

safari animal activities for preschoolers

I used an old table cloth and put it over the top of the table. My daughter sat underneath and had her puppet story come to life! It was about a elephant who needed to go to the doctor but slipped on his way in BTW.

Safari Arts and Crafts

Lion painting.

This project is so easy to set up. We used this easel  and I had my daughter on one side and my son on the other.

The first step was to draw the face. We did a guided and directed drawing, I told her in the middle of the paper to draw the triangle, and then the eyes etc and she followed along.

animal art activities

I LOVE painting with cotton balls it’s so easy and provides way less of a mess than traditional paint brushes. We used orange and yellow paint , and then I took two clothespins and attached cotton balls to them in order to create the circular dots around the lion’s face.  If you don’t have the supplies at home, dot paint  would also work well here.

lion preschool activity

Pro tip: whenever you do a painting project with littles add a washable plastic table cloth underneath. We also use these bibs to avoid getting paint on our clothes.

Safari Themed Preschool Craft

Moving along in the week, what’s a safari without a lion mask? This was a great opportunity for my daughter to work on her scissor cutting skills.

lion mask

  • On a piece of orange and yellow construction paper, draw 1 inch thick lines, and ask your child to cut them out (if not scissor ready have an adult cut them out).
  • Cut a hole in the middle of a paper plate
  • Using a glue stick, fasten the strips on the top of the paper plate, alternating yellow and orange stripes
  • Let the glue dry and then use the mask!

This was great for talking about patterns. She had to think each time she put a colored strip on what came next. We also went back to the mask later in the day and gave it a “hair cut.”

Math Safari Games

My daughter really enjoys playing dice games at school, so right before bed each night during safari week, we played a super fun and easy giraffe dice game.

Safari Snack

Who said you can’t play with your food? We took oranges and used edible pens and drew cute lion and tiger faces on our oranges.

safari snack

Safari Books

Since we can’t hit the bookstore or library these days, I had to get creative and find all the animal and safari books we already had. Luckily we had a few and they are a great addition to any littles library:

  • Put Me In the Zoo
  • Giraffes Can’t Dance
  • If Animals Kissed Goodnight

Safari P.E. Time

Now more than ever it is so important for my kids to stay active! They are used to a half an hour of straight running around the gym or playground at school, and being cooped up in the house means we have to get creative.

My daughter has been OBSESSED with Cosmic Kids Yoga. The narrator does an AMAZING job at telling a detailed story and then having very kid friendly yoga poses to go along with it. We did the jungle safari themed yoga and it was a huge hit.

Safari’ed Out

We had such a fun week learning about safari and jungle animals and can’t wait till our next theme, we are headed to Outer Space!

animal lineup safari preschool activities

Activities involving patterns, ordering, and counting are all important for early math skills. Using safari animals to practice these skills is a great way to do so through play! Here are some ideas:

  • Line up all the animals and then ask questions like “who is in the front?” “who is behind the elephant?”
  • Divide the animals evenly between you and your toddler. Put your animals in a pattern and then have your toddler copy the pattern.
  • Put all the animals in a pattern and then remove 2 or 3 from the line. Ask your toddler to put them in the correct place to complete the pattern.
  • Ask you toddler to group all the same animals together. Then ask them who has the most and least.
  • Count the animal groups.

safari cookies

Let’s make safari cookies! Sugar cookies are so fun to make with toddlers and they are so easy, too! Get some safari cookie cutters like these or these and make some adorable safari themed cookies. (We have the first set, which Little Miss loved, but they aren’t as durable as metal ones like the second set listed.)

Making sugar cookies allows our little ones to practice fine motor skills as they roll out the dough and cut the shapes. You can also use this time to talk more about animals and what color they are, what noises they make, etc.

map skills safari preschool activities

If you are looking for a nice, quick activity, this one has got you covered.

Show your toddler how they can line up the paper clips to figure out the distance between each animal. Talk about how many paper clips it takes to get from the giraffe to the hippo, hippo to elephant, and elephant to giraffe. Ask them questions such as, “Which one is the furthest? How do you know?” They may need some help to figure this out, but this is great for introducing them to early math skills! When you are done, let them make a paper clip train, just for fun!

diy binoculars

If you are going on a Safari, you want to see some animals! Make these cute and fun binoculars to see the animals with!

Using binoculars is a great way to practice coordination and motor skills. It also makes looking for things more fun! Use these for other activities throughout Safari month, such as looking for animals, letters, and more!

letter i letter recognition activity

“I” is for Ice Cream, of course! When you are on a Safari, it can get pretty hot, so you will need to stop for a cool snack. But you better eat fast or your ice cream will melt! Learn a new technique for painting and practice recognizing the letter “I” with this super sweet activity !

Tips for Taking Your Kids on Safari

African safaris are the things of bucket-list dreams. Who in their right mind would pass up the opportunity to watch animals in their natural habitat, roaming free as they were meant to?   Who wouldn’t get excited about this chance of a lifetime?

Of course, they liked the idea of a safari. I’d told them about how we would bump along the great plains of Kenya and Namibia in a high-seated jeep, spying lions, elephants, and zebras through our binoculars and, perhaps — even thrillingly — up close.

What I neglected to tell them is that safaris require much more than a desire to see the animals. They require patience.   It’s possible to be out in the fields for hours and only see baboons and gazelles. Beautiful in their own right, but not exactly the thrill the kids were after.

The Davis family poses in their safari jeep. (Photograph by Heather Greenwood Davis)

It’s that lack of excitement in the field that actually makes a safari magical — the anticipation of it all. It’s the   way your heart jumps when the lump you thought was simply a large stone…moves, or when   you spy something small in the bush, only to realize it’s a lion cub, no, wait, two — and there, in the shadow, its mother, too!

In those moments the entire jeep will go momentarily silent. And then the cameras will start clicking and your family will be among them, wondering how you managed to find yourself right there, right then.   But in the moments in between, your children’s tired cries of “I’m bored” may just drive you crazy.

Fear not, adventurous ones! I’m here to save you at least some of the trouble we went through by giving you a few things   to think about before booking a trip to the Serengeti or beyond:

Start small. When we were in Namibia we moved from smaller game parks up to the enormous Etosha National Park . While the animals we saw while at our first overnight stop just outside the city of   Windhoek   were smaller, the kids — who had never been on safari before — were excited to spot them and way more receptive to learn about them than they would have been if they had already seen a lion. By the time we reached Etosha, they could point out some of those smaller animals on their own and were even more blown away by the big game.

Manage expectations. Talk to your kids about patience, and remind them that they might   have to wait to see the big game they’re hoping for. Make it a game. Teach them the fun of the search, and be prepared to help them pass the time when there’s not much to see. Many lodges offer books (either at the front desk or in the gift shop) that will help your kids identify less familiar animals. Mine loved working through a checklist that included everything from different species of birds to the varying types of gnus.

Help them create their own memories. If you can give your kids their own camera or let them man the video recorder you’re bound to get multi-media memories that are sure to bring smiles later on. It will also help keep them engaged with what’s happening around them. And having paper, crayons or colored pencils on hand will buy you more time when you’ve spotted something that isn’t moving much. I could’ve watched the lions sleeping alongside the road for hours. My kids? Not so much.

A lion cub and its mother in Kenya. (Photograph by Heather Greenwood Davis)

Let them sleep. Safaris tend to take place in the early morning and evening hours. Kids who hate long car rides, getting up early, or who tend to fall asleep once they’re in the car may actually dose off now and then. Don’t fight it. Let your little ones rest when things are slow and rouse them for the highlights. Some of my favorite memories are of bumping along in the fresh air with one of my son’s heads on my shoulder.

  • Nat Geo Expeditions

Weigh the “prey factor.” I once went on a night safari with a woman who insisted on getting out of the jeep, in the middle of the bush, to use the bathroom in the wild, and insisted no one in the jeep look in her direction. We spotted the hyenas heading her way only after she returned. It sounds silly, but the Disney-like ramble of some tour operators can lead you to believe all is perfectly safe. It never is. Nothing is. Keep your wits about you and remember that small children can look like prey to wild animals. Keep them close. My sons once stepped out of a jeep at a game reserve where wild dogs were being preserved and the immediate transformation of the dogs from playful puppies to hunters made me very grateful for the electric fence. Remember where you are.

Do due diligence. Double check the age limits at your intended safari lodge before you book. Not all lodges allow small children on game drives for many of the reasons stated above. Usually the biggest concern is noise level (they may frighten off the very animals you’re looking for) and safety. The smaller the child the more that can be an issue. Most safaris we experienced wanted kids to be 7 or up. Others may lower the age limit if you’re in a private jeep just for your family, or suggest you only take certain game drives over others. Take their advice and think long and hard about your child’s personality before booking the trip. A temper tantrum in the wild can have consequences no one intended.

Know when to call it a day. Tired kids make for terrible safari companions. Early mornings and late nights can take more out of them than you anticipated. Think long and hard about filling your days with game drives- most lodges offer anywhere from 2 to 4 per day – and pack in time for just relaxing at the lodge. Don’t underestimate what you might see without actually going out to look for it. In Kenya, we had hippo companions at every meal.

What is an African Safari – An Introduction

safari definition for kindergarten

Elephants walk past the camp at sunrise. A herd of zebra skips around the river below. Hyenas cackle until a resonant lion roar echoes through the trees. This is African safari, an evocative immersion in the wild world , an intimate insight into a wilderness that hasn’t been tamed.

The best way to think about it is to consider the etymology of safari. It’s a Swahili word meaning “journey” and journey is the only adequate descriptive for the experience.

It’s a journey that connects you with your wild side , an experience that can only be understood after you’ve taken the plunge and visited Africa’s wildernesses.

What Makes Safari So Special

safari definition for kindergarten

Africa and African safari are usually too challenging to preconceive . If you’ve been to Paris you can make a guess as to what Rome looks like. But it doesn’t matter how many wildlife documentaries you’ve seen, nothing can prepare for the feeling that exists in Africa’s great wildernesses .

A zoo is where a handful of animals are caged for the enjoyment of thousands of visitors. A safari is where you’re invited into the wildlife world , where you are amongst a handful of visitors admiring hundreds of thousands of wild animals.

Visit a zoo and you’ll see animals, perhaps even get a selfie with them. Go on a safari and the experience can’t be encapsulated in a single moment.

Every day brings an incalculable number of scenes and impressions : baboons shouting, leopard stalking, antelope grazing, buffalo charging, giraffe turned to silhouette at sunset.

So trying to compare a safari to a zoo is like confusing Paris’ Louvre with an elementary school art exhibition: sure, both are art, but they’re not the same.

Embracing the Immersion and Intimacy

safari definition for kindergarten

With an African safari you are completely immersed in the wilderness and the wildlife world. Through game drives and other activities you will really explore, but the experience is 24-7 . Nature sings a daily lullaby, exotic smells guide your journey, and you can be in awe of the landscapes even when there are no animals in the vista.

At a zoo you’re on the outside looking in. With a safari you’re in the heart of it all, surrounded in 360 degrees of wildlife drama. Seeing animals in their natural habitat is one part of the experience; waking up in the wild is another experience entirely.

This immersion is complemented by intimacy . You get close enough to hear the crunch of lions ripping apart a zebra carcass; glances are shared as an elephant bull looks you up and down; an endangered white rhino seems almost close enough to touch.

Often there is so much going on that everyone gets a different experience in the same place . For example, come across a herd of 2000 zebra and there are many micro scenes to find, not including a lone leopard hiding in the grass nearby.

Experiencing Both the Scale and the Detail

safari definition for kindergarten

On a first-time safari it’s impossible to ignore the call of specific animals . You want to see lions, leopards, elephants, and all the famous characters endemic to Africa. There’s the big five of course and they’re often high on the list.

At first you’re enjoying redolent snapshots of single animals , taking in all the details on a micro level: a baby elephant chasing a warthog, a lion’s mane, hippos yawning in the water. The level of detail is remarkable and after the first two hours you’ll realise that there is always something new when you look the other way.

Even the smallest private game reserves are on a baffling scale. Some of the big national parks and reserves are larger than most European countries! Such enormous wildernesses provide home for huge animal populations .

Witnessing an elephant is a special experience; around 100,000 elephants can be seen in Botswana’s Chobe National Park . It can take three days just to cross Tanzania’s Serengeti , which is home to more than 2 million wild animals .

It’s this mix of scale and detail that has people coming back year after year for a safari.

But Really, What is an African Safari?

safari definition for kindergarten

Safari isn’t just going to Africa to see some animals. It’s an opportunity to connect with your wild side and experience the natural world as it really is. But all that’s to come.

Where do you start when there are hundreds of different safari destinations and many distinctive ways to discover the landscape?

Although it’s possible to go on a half or full-day safari, especially if you’re staying in Cape Town, at Africa Freak we always recommend a multi-day safari experience . You’ll see more , feel more , and get a deeper sense of the wild world .

On a typical multi-day safari you’ll enjoy two specific activities each day , which usually maximise the times when animals are most active : early morning and late afternoon . There could be other activities after dark as well, or in big parks like the Masai Mara or Kruger you may spend the whole day exploring.

For the rest of the time you are still on safari. Even at the lodge or camp you’ll be listening to and watching the animals. In most destinations it’s worth the trip just to feel the landscape , before you even set eyes on any of its four-legged inhabitants.

Safari is a Journey

safari definition for kindergarten

On a multi-day safari you’ll start to understand why safari is such a strong Swahili word. Safari really will take you on a journey as it helps to open up your wild side . With two or three days you can fully explore a single park or reserve, but we’d recommend much longer.

Every safari destination is different , with contrasting landscapes, animals and scenes. Spend a week and you could visit three or four different parks, building a more complete picture of Africa’s wild world.

Hey, if it was up to us we’d spend our whole lives on safari, experiencing all the beauty of the world’s final animal strongholds.

Just by reading this you’ve started the journey and we encourage you to continue. That wild side is ticking within you and there’s never a better time than now to start exploring. Remember, Africa is an enormous continent of 54 countries and over 1000 languages .

Every destination is a little different and suited to a different kind of visitor; you could have a private plunge pool overlooking the herds or a mobile camp hundreds of miles from civilization; for some, safari is sitting back and watching the wildlife roam past, while others want to be out discovering at all times of the day.

So explore the WHERE and learn about Africa’s safari destinations .

Read about WHEN to go on safari to maximise your experience.

Learn about WHO you’re going to meet on the journey, from communities and cultures to all the animals.

Discover HOW a safari day unfolds and get practical tips on making your safari an even better success.

See WHY safari is so important for conservation and self discovery.

And start planning your own safari in Africa .

Joyful Lessons

Let’s Learn About African Safari Animals Unit Study for Kindergarten

June 2, 2023

Are you looking for ideas to implement for your own African safari animals unit study ? Take a look at our week for some inspiration.

I truly get so excited about each new animal theme, but there is something so incredibly fun about African safari animals! Most animals that come to mind when we mention safari animals are pretty large compared to other animals we’re used to seeing. Afterall, it’s not every day kids see giraffes and elephants.

Let's Learn About Safari Animals Unit Study for science, math, phonics, fine and gross motor activities

African Safari Animals Unit Study

I like to introduce the animals we’ll be studying each week with an activity. Here are a few ways you could introduce the animal theme for your students:

  • Brief Video or Documentary
  • Close-up Pictures – Have them guess
  • Picture Book

Who Am I? Game

  • Show Pictures of the Habitat
  • Non-fiction Book
  • Run & Find or Run & Color Game

We played the Safari Animal “Who Am I?” Game to introduce the animal theme for the week. It didn’t take them long to guess what kind of animals we would be learning about.

Safari Animals Unit Study Science Activities

We used a few activities to learn more about African animals throughout the week:

Safari Animal Fact Cards

My boys enjoyed seeing the pictures of the different animals and learning a quick fact about them. We also used them as 3-part cards for them to match, but their favorite thing to match to the fact cards were the close-up pictures of the animals. They had to look closely to see which picture belonged to each animal.

Safari animal facts cards. Read a quick fact about African animals and match the pictures.

We read a few books about African animals. Their favorite was an Usborne book called Big Cats . It’s full of colorful photos and quick facts.

We played the Who Am I? game again, but this time they tried to stump me by telling me facts they had learned throughout the week about the different safari animals.

What Animals Live in Africa’s Grasslands?

To discover more about the habitat that African safari animals live in, they sorted photos of animals and placed the ones that are from Africa on the picture of the grasslands. Then we practiced recognizing the names of the animals, by matching the names with the correct pictures.

Draw & Tell

On Friday they drew a picture of their favorite African safari animal and wrote a sentence about it.

We have a local zoo we are members at, and it has a few African animals. It was the perfect end to our week of learning about safari animals.

Safari Animals Unit Study Math Activities

To keep their interest in African animals peaked, our math activities for the week were themed around safari animals.

Solve the Room Activities

I have found activities that get my boys up and moving, keep them engaged and make learning more fun. Solve the room activities do just that! You can learn more about how to do solve the room activities in your own classroom here .

The safari animals solve the room activities they did throughout the week were:

  • Comparing Sizes – Compared which animals were smaller, smallest, larger and largest.
  • Number Lines – Wrote the number that was missing from the number line.
  • +7 Facts – Wrote the answers to +7 facts.

More Math Activities

The other math activities were great for them to work on by themselves, so they could take turns working one on one with me. They would work well for math centers too.

  • They used the 10 frame task cards to practice counting, addition, and subtraction.
  • My boys love baby animals, so the counting on worksheets were a hit. They filled in numbers along the path to help the baby animals get to their moms.
  • The +9 clip cards were an easy way to practice their math facts.
  • They practiced skip counting by 5 with the safari animal number puzzle .
  • For the graphing activity they had to spot the different animals in the picture, count, and then color in the bar graph to match their findings.

Safari Animals Unit Study Phonics Activities

Our phonics activities for the week were also African safari themed.

Write-the-Room Activities

They worked on two write-the-room activities during the week, which included short a and short i words and sight words.

Letter Safari Game

The letter safari game was their favorite phonics activity for the week. It was a simple way to review letter sounds.

Read, Build, and Write

Each week they work on a read, build, and write center. I love that they can practice reading the word, building the word which makes it tangible to them, and then writing the word.

Sentence Puzzles

The sentence puzzles and worksheets were a fun way to practice building and writing sentences.

African Animals Unit Study for Kindergarten

Safari Animals Unit Study Fine Motor Activities

Practicing fine motor skills can get tedious, so I try to include a few themed activities to make it more interesting.

African Safari Animals Mini-Book

My boys enjoyed learning quick facts about African animals in the mini book they colored.

Animal Match-Up

They got to practice their scissor skills with the animal match-up activity. Then they had fun putting the pieces together “wrong” to make some silly animals.

Q-tip Giraffe Painting

Do your kids love to paint? Mine do! The Q-tip giraffe painting project was a hit for sure!

Safari Animals Unit Study Gross Motor Activities

We of course had to add in some gross motor movement to our African animal’s week.

Safari Animal Run and Find

My boys loved running around the house finding the safari animal pictures that matched their close-up clue cards.

Safari Animal Action Cards

We used the safari animal action cards throughout the week to get out extra wiggles.

Safari Animal Hop

I taped paw prints to the ground at a distance from each other that my boys could hop from one to the other. They had a blast hopping to the paw prints and loved the challenge!

We had a great time learning some new things about African animals.

Do you have a favorite activity or resource you would include in an african safari animals unit study.

If you would like to use any of these activities with your kids or students, you can purchase the African Safari Animals Unit Study for each subject or save money by buying the bundle in my TpT store .
