How to Reset Safari to Default Settings

Restoring default settings is a multistep process

What to Know

• First, remove the browser history: Select Safari in the menu bar > Clear History , then select All History > Clear History .

Remove Browser History

The first step when resetting Safari is to remove your browser history. When you clear your browsing history, Safari removes data such as recent searches, the frequently visited site list, web page icons, the history of web pages you've visited, and more.

From Safari's menu bar, select Safari > Clear History

In the drop-down menu, select All History .

Select Clear History to complete the process.

To clear a particular website instead, navigate to History > Show History , select the website you want to clear, and press Delete .

Remove Cookies

When you remove all cookies from Safari, you'll lose personal registration data such as your name and address, shopping cart contents, preferred web page layouts, and more.

From Safari's menu bar, select Safari > Preferences .

Select the Privacy tab.

Select Manage Website Data .

Select Remove Now .

Select Done .

Clear Safari's Cache

When you clear Safari's cache, you're removing stored website data.

Select the Advanced tab.

Place a check next to Show Develop menu in menu bar , and then exit out of Preferences.

From Safari's menu bar, select Develop > Empty Caches .

Disable or Uninstall Extensions

Safari extensions are like mini-apps that add functionality to the browser. If you're trying to reset Safari, you'll want to disable or uninstall any extensions.

Select the Extensions tab.

Select an extension, and then deselect the checkbox next to the extension to disable it.

Many extensions have several sub-extensions, so you'll need to uncheck all of them.

After you've disabled an extension, you can uninstall it. Select Uninstall .

You'll see a message that the extension is part of an application, and that you'll need to remove the application. Select Show in Finder .

Finder will open with the app selected. Right-click on the application and select Move to Trash .

Enter your password and select OK . You've deleted the extension.

This wikiHow teaches you how to customize the behavior of the Safari web browser on your iPhone or iPad. If you're using iOS 13 or later, you now have the option to choose display options for individual websites in addition to making global changes.

Changing Web Preferences by Website

• Changes you make with this method will only affect the currently-open website. If you want your preferences to affect all websites rather than just for those you customize, see the Changing Web Preferences for All Websites section instead.

• Select Ask on a feature if you'd like to be asked each time the site tries to access the feature (default).
• Select Deny if you never want the site to access the feature.
• Select Allow to always allow the site to access the feature.

Safari no longer has a reset button. This means that if you want Safari to return to its default settings, you would have to find a workaround.

This workaround will require that you take multiple steps to remove the history, clear the cache and disable extensions and plugins, and other aspects of the browser.

In this guide, we share with you how to take all these steps and effectively reset Safari to its default settings.

1. Reset Safari on iPhone and iPad

To reset Safari settings on your iPhone or iPad, follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Open the Settings from the Home screen.

Step 2: Scroll down and tap “Safari”.

Step 3: Then tap “Clear History and Website Data”.

Step 4: Tap “Clear History and Data” again to confirm.

2. Reset Safari on Mac

2.1. remove browser history.

While your browser history can help you auto-complete URLS and other items while browsing, it is often a good idea to clear your browser history for privacy reasons. Deleting your browser history resets the browser by deleting the following:

• All webpage history
• The sites that aren’t marked as permanent
• All cookies and website data
• A list of all the downloads
• Recent searches
• Any sites added to Quick Website Search

To remove the browser history, follow these simple steps:

2.4. Delete Extensions

Finally, you may want to disable or delete the extension. Disabling them is much easier than deleting them since all you have to do is go to Safari > Preferences > Website and deselect the plugins you no longer want to use.

If you want your iPad to go back to looking the way it did when you first got it, you can reset its settings to default without losing your data.

Like restarting an iPad , resetting also helps when you run into issues. However, if it doesn’t fix the problem and you want your original settings back, you can always restore your previous settings from a backup. This is why it’s a good idea to back up your iPad before you reset it.

Go to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPad > Reset . Please be careful not to accidentally tap Erase All Content and Settings, as that will delete everything from your device. It will ask you for a confirmation, though.

Clicking Reset will give you a few options: Reset All Settings, Reset Network Settings, Reset Keyboard Dictionary, Reset Home Screen Layout, Reset Location & Privacy .

As the name suggests, Reset All Settings will reset everything on your iPad to its defaults. This includes network settings, the keyboard dictionary, location settings, privacy settings, and Apple Pay cards. It won’t delete any data, though.

Resetting Network Settings will remove only your network settings. This will rename your iPad to ‘iPad,’ and manually trusted website certificates will be changed to untrusted. It will also turn off cellular data.

When you reset network settings, all your previously used networks and VPN settings are removed. And your Wi-Fi is switched off and then back on, which means you’re temporarily disconnected from the network you’re connected to.

The Reset Keyboard Dictionary option will remove all the words you’ve added to your iPad. Have you ever rejected a keyboard suggestion while typing on your iPad? Every time you do that, you add a new word to the keyboard dictionary on your device. Resetting this setting will erase all those words.

Tapping on the Reset Home Screen Layout will restore your home screen to its original state. All apps will return to their default positions.

Lastly, Reset Location & Privacy will undo any changes you made to your device’s location services and privacy settings and return them to default.

Make your Start Page clean and simple---or just as cluttered as you like it.

On your iPhone or iPad, you can easily customize the Safari Start Page in iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 (or higher). You can make the page blank (mostly), add a background image, or pick and choose what you want to see. Here's how.

First, open Safari on your iPhone or iPad and open a new tab by tapping the tabs button (two overlapping rectangles), then tapping the plus ("+") button.

You'll see Safari's "Start Page" by default. To edit what's on the Start Page, scroll down if necessary and tap the "Edit" button.

When you tap "Edit," a "Customize Start Page" window will appear. Use the switches beside the listed options to turn them on or off. Here's what each option does.

• Favorites: This displays items from your Favorites list (like bookmarks).
• Frequently Visited: You'll see a list of frequently visited websites.
• Shared With You: This gives you a list of items shared with you from other people through the Messages app.
• Privacy Report: This shows a report on the number of trackers Safari has blocked recently.

And if you turn the switch beside "Background Image" into the "on" position, you can select a background picture that will display behind the content on your Start Page. Tap an image in the thumbnails or tap the plus ("+") button to select a custom image from your photo library.

If you want to make your Start Page as minimalist as possible, switch off every item on the "Customize Start Page" list. (Unfortunately, you'll still see the "Edit" button.)

When you're done, click the "X" button to close the Customize Start Page window. The changes you've made take effect immediately. Happy browsing!

I am unable to allow pop ups on my iPad in Safari

My iPad has just recently decided to block pop ups and the section in safari under general where you normally toggle to turn on or off pop ups is grey and not able to be changed

If your iPad is not behaving as expected, try a forced-restart - as this will often clear an isolated software issue:

Force restart iPad (models with Face ID or with Touch ID in the top button)

If your iPad doesn’t have the Home button, do the following:

• Press and quickly release the volume button nearest to the top button.
• Press and quickly release the volume button farthest from the top button.
• Press and hold the top button.
• When the Apple logo appears, release the top button.

Turn off plugins within Safari

1. With the Safari Preferences window still open, toggle over to the "Websites" tab

2. Untick the box next to each plugin (listed at the bottom of the left sidebar)

Delete those plugins

These are stored in two separate areas, so your work will feel a bit redundant, but it's necessary to get the job done.

1. Tap your Finder to open it (it's the half-toned face icon in your bottom toolbar).

2. Under the "Go" menu of the top toolbar, select "Go to folder."

3. In the pop-up search menu, type "~/Library" and hit "Go."

4. Locate and go through the "Internet Plug-ins" folder and delete your plug-ins (you may want to keep your Safari Preferences open to "websites" so you can view your installed plugins) by dragging them over to the Trash.

5. Go up to the "Go" tab in your top toolbar and select "Go to folder".

6. Enter "/Library" in the search bar and hit "Go."

7. Locate and open the "Internet Plug-ins" folder again.

8. Select and delete or drag your undesired plugins into the Trash.

Troubleshooting, how to factory reset mac (macos sonoma & ventura).

If you are going to sell, return, or give away a Mac, you almost certainly want to factory reset the computer first. Performing a factory reset on a Mac will erase all data on the Mac, and return it to a clean slate as if the computer were brand new, without any data or personal files on the computer at all.

Erasing a Mac and returning it to factory defaults has never been easier, thanks to the addition of a “Erase All Content & Settings” feature introduced in newer versions of MacOS system software. Gone are the days where you had to manually erase and then reinstall system software, now you can simply let MacOS handle the task for you by choosing to erase and factory reset the Mac through a handy built-in feature.

Read along and you’ll be erasing all data on a Mac and it will be factory reset in no time.

The approach we are covering here is available in MacOS Sonoma, MacOS Ventura, and newer only.

How to Factory Reset Mac with MacOS Sonoma & MacOS Ventura

Be sure to back up the Mac with Time Machine first. Proceeding will erase all data, files, and information from the computer.

Warning: This will erase all data on the Mac. Do not proceed unless you have backups of your data. Failure to backup will result in permanent data loss.

• Pull down the  Apple menu and go to “System Settings”
• Go to “General”
• Choose “Transfer or Reset”

• Click on “Erase All Content and Settings”

• Confirm that you want to erase everything, log out of your Apple ID, and remove all data from the Mac by clicking “Continue”
• Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the process

When the Mac has finished factory resetting and erasing everything, a freshly installed version of the current version of MacOS will boot into the typical “Hello” screen. Assuming you’re going to be gifting this Mac, selling it, transferring it, or whatever, you probably do not want to set it up yourself, instead let the recipient handle it.

What about factory resetting a Mac with macOS Monterey?

This same factory reset feature also exists in macOS Monterey, but it is accessed slightly differently on those Macs. To factory reset a macOS Monterey Mac, go to the  Apple menu > System Preferences > System Preferences menu > Erase All Content And Settings. Be sure to backup all data beforehand, as usual.

This is a very convenient set of features and is much more user friendly and easier to initiate than the older other method which involves erasing the hard drive, then manually reinstalling MacOS, which is the approach necessary for MacOS Big Sur, MacOS Monterey, and all earlier versions of MacOS and Mac OS X .

If you’re coming to the Mac from the world of iPhone or iPad, you may be aware that a built-in function to factory reset the iPhone has been included in iOS and iPadOS for a long time, which behaves in a similar manner as this ability on the Mac.

The reseting on Monterey info appears to be incorrect. There is no “Erase all content and settings” available in the system preferences menu.

You can also right-click the system settings icon, and select “transfer or reset”. Its a minor difference, but right-clicking the Icon gives you an alphabetized list rather than needing to navigate through categories and sub-menus to perform what should be simple tasks.

Remove or delete apps from iPhone

You can easily remove or delete apps from your iPhone. If you change your mind, you can download the apps again later (if they’re still available in the App Store).

Do any of the following:

Remove an app from the Home Screen: Touch and hold the app on the Home Screen, tap Remove App, then tap Remove from Home Screen to keep it in App Library, or tap Delete App to delete it from iPhone.

Delete an app from App Library and Home Screen: Touch and hold the app in App Library, tap Delete App, then tap Delete. (See Find your apps in App Library .)

If you change your mind, you can redownload apps you’ve removed.

In addition to removing third-party apps from the Home Screen, you can remove the following built-in Apple apps that came with your iPhone:

Contacts (Contact information remains available through Phone, Messages, Mail, FaceTime, and other apps. To remove a contact, you must restore Contacts.)

FaceTime (In iOS 17.4 or later, if you remove the FaceTime app from your iPhone, or if you removed it in an earlier version of iOS before updating to iOS 17.4, you won’t be able to make or receive FaceTime calls or join SharePlay sessions on your iPhone unless you redownload the app . See Make FaceTime calls on iPhone .)

Find My (Removing this app doesn’t turn off location sharing or Find My for your device or items—it just removes the ability to view locations in the Find My app on that device.)

Note: When you remove a built-in app from your Home Screen, you also remove any related user data and configuration files. Removing built-in apps from your Home Screen can also affect other system functionality.
