Wheatus (formed in 1995) is an American rock band from Northport, New York, U.S., known for their 2000 smash hit single “Teenage Dirtbag”.

Lead singer Brendad Brown formed Wheatus in 1995 when he began writing songs in New York City, U.S., and recruited his brother Peter Brown on drums, Rich Liegey on bass and Philip A. Jimenez as multi-instrumentalist, inlcuding percussion, keyboard and the harmonica. The name Wheatus is a play on the word “Wedus” which is what the Brown brothers’ father used to affectionally call them as children.

In 1999 the band hired the attorney Ray Maiello, who helped the band get signed with Kevin Patrick at Columbia Records and was subsequently hired as manager. Wheatus’ self-titled debut album was released on August 15, 2000 and proved to be the band’s commercially successful album, featuring the unforgettable “Teenage Dirtbag” The single reached No. 2 in the UK’s Singles Chart and has since been the soundtrack in the movie “Loser” and the TV series “Generation Kill”. The single’s follow-up, a cover of Erasure’s “A Little Respect”, also performed well in the charts, peaking at No. 3 in the UK’s Singles chart.

Shortly after, lead singer Brown refused to lip-sync on the UK show Top of the Pops and in response Columbia Records, under the ownership of Song Music Entertainment refused to release the band’s sophomore album. The refusal led to a change in album titled from “Hand Over Your Loved Ones” to the rather aptly named “Suck Fony”, the album was eventually released on their own label Montauk Mantis in February 2005.

A consistent series of personnel changes left Brendad Brown as the only remaining member of the original line-up. Wheatus has since released three albums 2005’s “TooSoonMonsoon”, 2009’s “Pop, Songs & Death” and 2013’s “The Valentine”, the latter of which concerned issues regarding LGBT individuals in school and sexual equality. In 2013 the boyband One Direction started covering Wheatus’ “Teenage Dirtbag”, introducing the band to a newer audience.

Live reviews

There’s no real doubting ‘Teenage Dirtbag’s status as one of the biggest hits of the noughties; the flipside of that success, for Wheatus, is that it’s pretty firmly secured them one-hit wonder status. Everybody knows that song, but plenty of people couldn’t even name the band behind it, much less tell you what they got up to next; those with sharper memories might recall that their next single, a cover of Erasure’s ‘A Little Respect’, was a reasonable chart success, too, but after that, they pretty much fell of the radar, following a label dispute over their poorly-promoted second album that would eventually lead to them reissuing it under the name ‘Suck Fony’. In fact, though, Wheatus are still going strong today, and their relative anonymity these days has at least afforded them the possibility of experimentation, recording their last album, The Valentine LP, in the super high-fidelity DSD format. They continue to tour the UK, too, on an annual basis, with their latest run of dates set for October; if you’re after a quick shot of nostalgia, you could do far worse than check them out - and, just in case you were wondering, no, they haven’t done a Radiohead: ‘Teenage Dirtbag’ remains very much pride of place in the setlists.

Wheatus have a double edged sword in their arsenal as the runaway success of their post-grunge 2000 single 'Teenage Dirtbag' has overshadowed everything else they have done in their career following on from that. Luckily for the punk pop New York six piece, the UK has always been an advocate of 90s nostalgia and therefore there is a small demand to continuously watch Wheatus in a live setting.

Playing their only other hit 'A Little Respect' early on is a good way to get the energy levels heightened and you cannot deny that the band really do get behind their music. If you look at the figures, the following three albums after their eponymous debut failed to chart in any territories so even when the band play tracks lifted from them, they are wise to revert back to the likes of 'Truffles' and 'Sunshine' so as not to lose the attention of the crowd. 'Teenage Dirtbag' is saved until last and is a great, fun moment that is sung back in force and it feels like Wheatus have worked for this.

Wheatus are one of the greatest small venue live acts I've seen. I saw them last year and really enjoyed so had to go back to see if it was just "first time awe". Well they were even better at the Garage in London. They lean towards the heavier side of rock, almost metal and certainly rock the place to shreds. Nothing like their catchy signature tune ,"Teenage Dirt bag". Oh no even this song was ramped up on the rock level. I am going next year year.

Die Band war gut gelaunt und das Publikum durfte sich immer wieder wünschen, was sie als nächstes gerne hören möchte. Es wurden viele gute alte Lieder gespielt und immer zwischendrin auch mal etwas neueres, sowie die aktuelle Single. Der Sound war nicht so genial, aber durchaus hörbar und tanzbar. Insgesamt also eine gute Show und ein top Abend.

we love em in bristol...when they ask the audience which tracks WE want to hear,it makes us feel like we're contributing to the atmosphere,it's not all about two or three hits they had back then...BUT its always a bonus to hear em anyway(teenage dirtbag etc)loadsa merch,support acts too..and the guitar walk-about through the audience...AleXnSootster

Seen Wheatus at the Thekla in Bristol twice now and both times have been incredible! Always an outstanding performance and such a unique experience. Would go back in a heartbeat! Absolutely the best night of my life!!!

It’s hard to believe it’s been over 20 years since Wheatus released their debut album and still ubiquitous single “Teenage Dirtbag.” Yes, that’s right – Dirtbag is no longer a teenager. In honor of this anniversary, Wheatus are releasing a new and expanded edition of their now classic debut album. Says Brendan B Brown, “We found demos of ten more songs from throughout the band’s history, that had such an album-one vibe that they never made it on to our more recent records. So now we’re giving them a proper chance to be heard. The twenty-song version of the album will feature the originally-conceived track listing and sequence, plus the extra ten songs that have finally found a home on a record.”

Pandemics notwithstanding, the band continues a seemingly endless tour cycle.  2019 took Wheatus on a coast-to-coast, almost entirely sold-out tour of America opening for (and then collaborating with) Mike Doughty on his Ruby Vroom 25th Anniversary shows. That tour culminated in a super-special sold-out hometown headline show where the “classic” line-up of Wheatus reunited for one night only – their first time on stage together in 18 years. After that, the current line-up flew to South Africa to play some festivals, and then headed to Europe and the UK for another six weeks of touring.  2021 saw the band travel all over America, supporting Everclear, Hoobastank & Living Colour on the Summerland Tour.

2022 saw the band explode back into the mainstream with the “Teenage Dirtbag” trend going hugely viral across social media, with over TWO BILLION views in less than a month.  The song has been shared & celebrated by Lil Nas X, Brooke Shields, Paris Hilton, Madonna, Alice Cooper, Jon Bon Jovi, Chevy Chase, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mark Ruffalo, Gwen Stefani, Christina Aguilera, Heidi Klum, Lady Gaga, Sammy Hagar, Nick Kroll, Mark Ronson, Lupita Nyong’o, LL Cool J, Tony Hawk, Vitoria Beckham, Machine Gun Kelly, Anderson Paak, Jessica Alba, Mick Fleetwood, Millie Bobby Brown, Sheryl Crow, Chris Pratt, and Jamie Lee Curtis… to name a very select few.
