Kansas City residents are a little bit prideful about the Boulevard Brewing Company, as if to say: "So what if  St. Louis has Anheuser-Busch , we have Boulevard." Among its many beers, this brewery offers its fans everything from unfiltered wheat (a favorite) to pale ale to pilsner. The brewery has become the largest specialty brewer in the Midwest and ships its beers to more than 30 states across the U.S, and Washington, D.C. The brewery has seen such success and growth that it opened a visitors center in the summer of 2016 with beer exhibits, a larger tasting room and an expanded retail shop.

Beer connoisseurs are in for a treat at this brewery. Visitors can take a  free guided tour, which includes a short video of how the beer is made, a history of the Boulevard Brewing Company, a walk-through and also some samples. Travelers said the tour guides are insightful, entertaining and funny and offer a thorough presentation of the various types of beer.

Boulevard Brewery's free tours are available on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the tour. Tickets become available at 10 a.m. and tours fill up quickly, so it's best to head here early to snag a ticket. There are also a few other more in-depth tours available, including the Smokestack Tour and Tasting (a food and beer pairing) and the Unfiltered Tour and Tasting (a 90-minute experience where visitors get to see other areas of the brewery typically off-limits to the general public), though these tours will cost a fee. You'll find the Boulevard Brewing Company in the Westside South neighborhood in downtown Kansas City, right off of Southwest Boulevard. Visit the website  to find out more on the types of beers brewed and various tours.

#1 Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art appeals to many kinds of visitors, such as little kids who appreciate the giant badminton birdie installations (four 18-foot shuttlecocks, to be exact) on the 22-acre lawn, or adults who enjoy the play of light in Caravaggio's "Saint John the Baptist in the Wilderness." The art museum's permanent collection spans thousands of years, includes more than 35,000 pieces and features art from Europe, Asia and America. The museum also displays interesting architectural pieces like centuries-old furniture and stained glass windows, in addition to more modern paintings, prints and drawings, sculptures and photography. What's more, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art showcases different exhibitions every year across a variety of mediums; check the site for upcoming exhibits during your visit.

Visitors are consistently impressed with this museum, saying they could spend hours perusing the interesting art. Recent travelers called out the massive sculpture park for its host of unique installations and said the grounds were delightful to stroll on a nice day. Many said they also appreciated that there was no fee to browse this museum's extensive collection of works.

Boulevard Brewery Tour – 43/100

#43 – Boulevard Brewery Tour 2534 Madison Ave, Kansas City, MO 64108

Cost: Free Good for: Beer lovers. Features: Gift shop, beer hall. Tip: Sign up in advance for the Smokestack Tour for an extensive behind the scenes tour along with beer and food pairings.

Boulevard holds a special place in the hearts of many Kansas Citians. Even in the past two years that I have lived in Kansas City, it has been fun to see the company grow and change. Boulevard brewery tours are a great way to familiarize yourself with the company and drink some great beer.

Boulevard Brewery Tours

The basic Boulevard Brewery Tours are free! Unfortunately, this is changing in 2018, so go now if you’re serious about free stuff. Currently, the process for getting a tour time is a bit weird, as tickets are distributed in a first-come, first-served, in-person basis. Meaning you have to be there at 10am to ensure you have a ticket, even you don’t want to go on a tour until 3pm.

Tours are an hour long and include beer samples. The tour explores the Boulevard campus and includes information on the brewing and bottling process and the history of Boulevard. You end in the Tours and Rec building for the opportunity to hit the gift shop or drink more in the Beer Hall.

Boulevard Brewery Tours also offer private tours and the Smokestack Tours and Tastings, which I thought was fantastic. Tickets are $25 for a 2-hour tour with private tasting and food pairing. Our guide was friendly and funny, and ultimately made the tour. You get a LOT of tastings of high ABV beers (the Smokestack Series beers are all 7.5% ABV or higher).

I highly recommend scheduling as far in advance as possible for the Smokestack Tour, as it fills up fast.

About Boulevard Brewery Company

Boulevard  began in 1984, after owner, John McDonald, returned from a trip in Europe. He had been inspired by the complexity and variety of Belgian beers, and wanted to bring them to the U.S. The company hasn’t stopped growing since.

Whether you do the free tour or the Smokestack, enjoy this Kansas City favorite. xx, Libbie.
