Grasshopper's premier self-guided cycle tour of Japan! Kyoto is the historic home of Japanese culture and one of our favorite cities in which to tour by bicycle. Explore the ancient capital by bike, then ride through another Japanese heritage city - Nara, a beautiful hilltop village Yoshino and the spiritual Mount Koya, before descending to the coast at Wakayama.

Enjoy the freedom of setting your own pace, one of the joys of self-guided cycle touring, but with the seamless logistical support that Grasshopper is famous for. Luggage transfers, hotels booked in advance, navigational aids, audio commentary and lots of information on food to help you make the most of Japanese cuisine on your ride. Great bikes, maintained to a Japanese level of precision are the icing on the self-guided Japan tour cake.

260 km / 159 mi riding . This self-guided bike tour is ridden on smooth sealed roads. You mostly ride rural lanes, backroads and dedicated cycleways. Once or twice for short distances you will cycle A-roads, but traffic is light.  There are some hill climbs to challenge you along the way, but these are all achievable if you take your time. We recommend some pre-tour preparation to make sure you’re comfortable with the distances and climbs. There are multiple options to cut rides short or cut out hill climbs with some interesting public transport solutions to adapt your ride.

Pedal-assist E-bikes are an available option on this tour from $200.

Upgrade your bike to a Cannondale Synapse Carbon Ultegra SE for just $220

Due to festivities surrounding the Golden Week, which runs from April 29 to May 5, bookings can't be made for departures in late April and early May. The high volume of traffic, along with major changes to traffic organization, make it impossible to organize a tour in this period. We also feel your experience would be lessened due to crowds.

  • Explore the many UNESCO World Heritage sites of Kyoto as you cycle this cultural capital.
  • Along the journey, stay in traditional Ryokan accommodations for a flavor of Japanese culture.

Day 1: Kyoto - Welcome to the Ancient Capital

Japan's cultural epicenter encompasses more than just history, temples and tradition, which it has plenty of with the mighty Imperial Palace and the Golden Pavilion shimmering against the lake on which it sits. The UNESCO world heritage site is also a hub for Japan's dynamic modern art scene. On this arrival day, nothing is planned until the late afternoon briefing, so you are free to explore this fascinating city on your own. Our briefing is arranged at your convenience, designed to run through the practicalities of the trip and introduce you to your bikes and equipment.

Day 2: Kyoto - Explore by Bike

Kyoto is such a great city to explore by bike. Wide roads and shared pathways everywhere, considerate and careful drivers and little alleyways along canals, this is typically fun riding in this cycling-friendly country. The city was the capital of Japan for so long (at two separate times), that it is very much the heritage and cultural capital still.

The ride starts out along the river and takes you up to the north of the city where you can visit the Bamboo Forest and at certain times of the year the iconic cherry blossom gardens. There is a stop at the Tenryuji Temple which is typical of the ancient architecture that has endured the passage of time. You then ride onto Ryoanji in the east, famous for its UNESCO favorite zen-style garden. On the way, you can stop at Kinkakuji and take in a great view out over the city. There are lots of traditional sweets available on the route, so you can stop and graze on these before rolling back into town along the Kamo River. The stops you make are up to you, so take the route and our audio guide and decide for yourself. This evening is free for you to explore the incredible dining options, but we have plenty of suggestions for the best local eateries.

Day 3: Nara - Cycle Between Capitals

Leaving a city the size of Kyoto by bike may sound daunting, but in reality it is not. The roads are well planned and the drivers are courteous. After only a few kilometers on the roads, you will connect to the bike path and then it is smooth sailing as you ride a levy by the river. There are some junctions and some road intersections that you need to negotiate, but for the most part, you are on an uninterrupted path past Bamboo forests, corn crops and green tea plantations. A small cafe that is welcoming to cyclists can be found for morning tea and there is a viewing tower with a spotless bathroom about halfway through the ride. These recommendations and more will be on the Grasshopper Self-Guided app.

You will now be staying in a cross between a hotel and a Ryokan. It features beds rather than futons, but from reception throughout the property you’ll find Tatami matting. You will be staying right in Nara, just next to the main train station. The Nara Park and the key temple sites of Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji are just a short ride away (3km), but there is also a shuttle bus that runs a circular route through the area.

Day 4: Yoshino - Cycle up to the Kii Mountain Range

You stayed on the northern edge of Nara last night, so this morning you get to ride through the remnants of the ancient city. To be fair, there is not much left of it but there is an impressive replica of the palace that you will ride past. The Nara period was from AD 710-794, during that time the city was modeled after Chang'an, the Tang Capital of China. The upper class at the time adopted the Chinese system of writing and also adopted Buddhism as their religion.

As you pass through Nara you will see that it is a city of some size. The cycling route takes you on a somewhat complex, but navigable route to avoid riding with any heavy traffic. Once you clear the city, the riding turns to very pleasant little backroads through the countryside. You will start to encounter hills, but most are not significant in length. You will find yourself pedaling among more agriculture and smaller villages.

As the day wears on, the hills start to increase until you reach the foot of the climb up to Yoshino. This is only about 6km, though, and the gradient is not severe. Yoshino is a picturesque location set on a ridge with a collection of temples atop. Tonight you will stay in a Ryokan, a traditional Japanese Inn. This means a room with tatami matting that you can sit on and which you must be careful not to wear shoes, there is also a thermal onsen on site so you can soak your sore legs and your dinner will be served in traditional style. This is a fantastic opportunity for cultural immersion.

Day 5: Koyasan - Cycle to Mount Koya

After another delicious Japanese breakfast that must be enjoyed at a slow pace, it's time to saddle up and glide down the hill. The second third of the day will have you cycling undulating terrain with some sharp little uphills at times. Lunch is available at a great location at a red iron bridge or the ubiquitous convenience stores. You can then push on towards the big hill of Japan’s holiest mountain. The climb is in two parts, the first is around 4km long, then there is a 3km descent and some undulations before you get into the main climb of 8km. The road is very narrow, but there are few vehicles, if any, and the views are spectacular. As you reach the top, there is a section that undulates all the way into your accommodation.

If you feel like taking it easy on this day then there is a picturesque alternative to the climb. After the initial 35km of cycling, you will come to Hashimoto Station. Here, you can lock up your bikes, purchase your tickets for the Nankai Koya train line, then board one of Japan's longest funicular to the top of Mount Koya where your Shukubo awaits.

Day 6: Wakayama - Descend to the Coast

By rising early and getting out on your bikes, you will be able to see Koyosan almost deserted of people. Koyasan is actually a modification of the original name of the mountain Kong-Obb Ji, but the town that has developed around this site is called Koya. The mountaintop is the worldwide center of Shingon Buddhism and considered an extremely sacred place. The deserted town of the early morning is postcard perfect. Depending on the time of year, you will see moss and lush greenery spilling out from behind rock walls. Small lanes and winding streets are lined by small houses and businesses and you will probably see processions of monks walking to their meditation session. There are a couple of main sites to visit including the 45-meter tall orange colored, Konpon Daito Pagoda and the memorial grounds. You can choose which sites you explore today based on what strikes your fancy. Back at the Shukubo, breakfast has been prepared for you in your room. This meal consists of a selection of vegetarian delicacies as eaten by the monks themselves. Perhaps you fancy an Onsen dip before starting your ride, but a ride start of 10 am is recommended at the latest. Descending off the mountain is exhilarating. The road surface is superb the road is a lot wider than the one on which we climbed the day before. You do need to watch the oncoming vehicles of which there will be a few, but the traffic in your direction is insignificant as most people are making the trip up rather than down. About halfway down the hill, you leave the main route and cycle smaller backroads usually almost deserted by cars. You’ll encounter a climb of around 3km to get the blood moving, then an undulating ride with a downwards trend, through shady Cedar forests and then along a fast moving river. Around the 30km mark, you leave the hills behind and things start to become more built up. After pedaling your way through a relatively busy little junction town, you'll find the trailhead of the bike path that takes you all the way into Wakayama along the river. This is flat, open riding and because there are no vehicles, you can slip into that meditative state that one gets when pedaling away. Wakayama is a surprisingly interesting port city with a deep history for you to explore this evening with our recommendations.

Day 7: The Tour Concludes

Wakayama could actually keep you busy for a morning. There is the castle, an Art Museum and a Train Museum, all within walking distance of the hotel. Checkout time at the hotel is 10 am, but it is possible to request an 11 or 12 pm checkout, depending on how busy the hotel is. Once you are ready to leave, it is just a short taxi ride to the train station. From here you can easily take a train to Osaka Airport (KIX), Osaka City, or Kyoto.

We loved everything, especially how different each day was. We loved staying in the Koyasan and participating in the Buddhist ceremony.

Everyone of us are very happy with the tour. The routes are carefully selected, same as the lodging,  which offered us an opportunity to learn about Japanese minimalistic style and also was a culinary experience. Bikes and equipment are high quality.

The Grasshopper team are very friendly and ready to help. Takuro is a masterpiece in the team, he managed to appear discreetly in the correct moment. Norman is very kind and encourages the group when initiating the adventure.

This was a very well organized and supported tour. The staff was very helpful, responsive and accommodating. When problems arose they promptly dealt with them.

We really had a lovely time.

This was our first self-guided tour. Grasshopper created a challenging but highly-rewarding adventure with great scenery, tasty food, fantastic cycling, and the occasional cheeky monkey.

Self-Guided Kyoto Bike Tour: Must-See Places in Arashiyama!

While there are many Kyoto bike tours where you can hire a guide, it's equally easy to drop by a bike rental shop and explore on your own. As Kyoto is relatively flat, it's easy to get around by bicycle. This self-guided Kyoto bike tour, starting in Arashiyama , will take you around some of the most popular sights in the area. With so many temples , souvenir shops , and natural sceneries, there are plenty of highlights. Take your time enjoying the Arashiyama area, from the easily-accessible shops to the more solemn temples of Okusaga.

The first stop on our Kyoto Bike Tour: Ranbura Rental Cycle

Kyoto bike tour: arashiyama course, 1. kimono forest: the vivid colors and patterns of kyo-yuzen, 2. togetsukyo bridge: a symbol of arashiyama visited by the emperor, 3. bread, espresso and arashiyama: homemade bread in a historic japanese house, 4. world heritage site tenryuji and its beautiful gardens, 5. nonomiya shrine: the deity of matchmaking surrounded by saga bamboo forest, 6. arashiyama bamboo forest: a narrow walking path with cool greenery overhead, 7. nison-in temple: a mountain temple surrounded by peaceful nature, 8. daikakuji temple: a beautiful temple with over 1200 years of history, explore another side of the area on a kyoto bike tour.

The first stop on our Kyoto Bike Tour: Ranbura Rental Cycle

Today we rented a bicycle from Ranbura Rental Cycle, located right inside Arashiyama Station. As you can rent a bicycle immediately upon arrival, it is the perfect base for a Kyoto bike tour around Arashiyama . First, you can select the type of bicycle you want to rent and the length of usage time. Purchase your rental ticket and the vending machine, and give it to the receptionist. Be sure to check the warnings for riding your bike. Do not ride bicycles on the sidewalk. If the facility you are visiting does not have free bicycle parking, you can use the paid parking, or walk your bike if there are many pedestrians. There are three kinds of bicycles. The City Cycle has three speeds and is affordable at 600 yen for 2 hours or 1100 for the day (tax included). The Electric Bicycle is also recommended, at 1600 yen per day (tax included).

kyoto self guided bike tour

For those who are more active, there is the electric E-bike (seen in photo). If you're not accustomed to riding a bike, we'd recommend this type as the pedal assist function will help you stay fresh and not tire you out as much, even over long distances. The motor assists the force applied when pedaling, making it easier to climb uphill. It also has excellent disc brakes. It is 2,000 yen for the day (tax included).

1. Kimono Forest: The Vivid Colors and Patterns of Kyo-Yuzen

To properly get into our Kyoto bike tour, we’re heading straight to the Kimono Forest . The Kimono Forest is located right next to Arashiyama Station. There are approximately 600 poles of Kyo-Yuzen-dyed cloths lining the station yard, the small paths, the cherry blossom garden on both sides of the track, and the maple garden . There are 32 kinds of colorful patterns, including Kanjincho patterns, dragons, and Karajishi Botan (Guardian Lion and Peony) patterns. They are all from the brand Pagong, operated by the Kameda-Tomisen Factory, founded in 1919.

kyoto self guided bike tour

Passing through the Kyo-Yuzen forest from the station, you will see Ryu-no-Atago Pond. It is said that you can find happiness just by soaking your hands in this water and praying to the dragon. It is also lit up every evening, creating an even more fantastical world.

  • Address 20-2 Sagatenryuji Tsukurimichicho, Ukyo Ward, Kyoto, 616-8384

Hours: Open anytime (Light-up from evening till 9:00PM) Closed: Open daily

2. Togetsukyo Bridge: A Symbol of Arashiyama Visited by the Emperor

Next on our Kyoto bike tour, we headed to the Togetsukyo Bridge over the Katsura River , which stretches 155m long. It is an Arashiyama landmark and is often seen in movies and on TV. There are parks and benches along both banks, which are good places to take a break from cycling. The Togetsukyo Bridge (whose name literally means "moon-passing bridge") is said to have gotten its name in the Kamakura Era, when Emperor Kameyama, looking up at the moon, said it looked as if it was passing through along the bridge. The bridge is famous for its spring and autumn backdrops of Arashiyama , dyed with cherry blossoms and autumn leaves; however, it also looks beautiful in its green season .

3. Bread, Espresso and Arashiyama: Homemade Bread in a Historic Japanese House

Time to take a break. I visited Bread and Espresso, the first Kyoto branch of the chain's 13 stores in Japan. On the large site with a well-kept garden is the cafe , "Espresso-to," and the bakery, "Pan-to." There is also a bicycle parking space in front of the store. The 210-year-old mansion is registered as a tangible cultural property by the prefecture. It has been renovated into a cafe with a thatched roof, dirt floors, and tatami mats for an authentic traditional Japanese atmosphere. Here you can enjoy homemade breads and their limited-edition matcha toast.

kyoto self guided bike tour

The popular Panini Set (1300 yen, tax included) includes a drink, such as a latte or an espresso. It's the perfect place to stop for a quick lunch or coffee break. The homemade panini is made using kelp and bonito, giving it a subtle Japanese flavor—the perfect break on your bike tour.

4. World Heritage Site Tenryuji and its Beautiful Gardens

Tenryuji is one of the must-see places of Arashiyama . It is a short walk away from Randen Station, however, it also has free bicycle parking for visitors, perfect for you and your rental bike. Tenryuji Temple was founded by Ashikaga Takauji and built by Buddhist monk Muso Soseki in 1339. The Sogenchi Garden , also built by Muso Soseki, was designated as Japan's first Special Place of Scenic Beauty . It is especially famous for its beautiful autumn foliage in the fall, and its spring scenery of nearly 200 cherry blossom trees. Sit back, relax, and look out over the garden and its amazing view of Arashiyama

kyoto self guided bike tour

The Sogenchi Garden , designed by Muso Soseki, skillfully fuses the elegance of the dynasty's culture with the ruggedness of samurai culture. The huge rock in front of the priest's chamber is called Ryumon-no-taki Falls, and the stone on the left-center side is the Koi Fish Stone. The garden is beautiful when looked at from any direction. However, if you sit in a zazen position (the seated meditation position), you can look at the Koi Fish Stone and the surrounding scenery from an eye-level point of view. Calm yourself and experience the sounds and scenery woven by nature . There are many other highlights in the vast temple grounds, such as the Darumazu (Bodhidharma Painting) in the back of the warehouse and the Unryuzu (Cloud Dragon Painting) on the ceiling of the temple hall. By all means, please visit and check them out.

5. Nonomiya Shrine: The Deity of Matchmaking Surrounded by Saga Bamboo Forest

Next on our Kyoto bike tour, we head to Nonomiya Shrine , which houses the deity of education and marriage. It is nestled in the middle of the bamboo forest . This is the place where the Saio, or Ise Shrine Priestesses, who served the Emperor during the Heian period, underwent their purification. The shrine is also known to have appeared in the Tale of Genji.

kyoto self guided bike tour

The green temple grounds are full of highlights, including the oldest torii in Japan made of kunugi tree, Kuroki-no-torii, and Kame-ishi, the giant stone said to grant a wish if you touch it. The moss garden appears to be covered in a green carpet and maintains a lush look all year round. It is said to be the best rich, mossy scenery in Kyoto.

6. Arashiyama Bamboo Forest: A Narrow Walking Path with Cool Greenery Overhead

Ready to move on? Time to take your rental bike to the north of Tenryuji Temple and west of Nonomiya Shrine , to the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest Path, a top-rated attraction with tourists. It is one of Arashiyama 's most scenic spots. Follow the path through the lush bamboo for nearly 400 meters to the Okochi Sanso Garden . It is a continuous slope, so it is recommended to use an electric-assist bicycle to proceed easily. The sunbeams pouring through the green trunks and leaves are an especially beautiful sight. To get a good photo, be sure to turn your camera angle a little up. In the early winter , there is also a light-up that has become characteristic of Arashiyama . If you visit at a regular time, we recommend taking an early morning walk to feel the cool air without the crowd.

7. Nison-in Temple: A Mountain Temple Surrounded by Peaceful Nature

This is an ancient temple of the Tendai Sect at the foot of Mount Ogura. As its name implies, it enshrines two principal images: Shaka Nyorai and Amitabha Nyorai. It is famous for its autumn foliage and spring cherry blossom sceneries. There is a wide variety of natural elements throughout the precincts, such as Momiji-no-Baba, an approach wide enough for horses to run through. The structures are colored in nature , from the Imperial Court to the Main Hall that was used by the Emperor's messengers. It is located in Kyoto’s western area, and reminiscent of the Saigo Gokuraku Joudo (Western Pure Land) of Buddhism. Feel the harmony with nature and the tranquility of Buddhism in the heart of Arashiyama . The lush, green foot of Mount Ogura

kyoto self guided bike tour

Listen to the sounds of frogs and insects in the nature -rich precincts. Visit the Shiawase-no-Kane bell, which you can freely ring, and Shigure-tei, where you can overlook the city from the top of the mountain path. Go up northwest from the Arashiyama Station area. It is located along a small path, so it is relatively empty of crowds outside of the foliage and cherry blossoms seasons . It's a bit far from the station, but it does have a place to store your bike, so it is most convenient to access it by bike.

In front of the soumon gate is a flat road that extends straight from the Rakushisha, or "Hut of Fallen Persimmons." It is recommended for a nice leisurely stroll to enjoy the rich, surrounding nature . It is closed to cars on Sundays and holidays from 10:00AM to 7:00PM, so you can cycle more safely. North from Nison-in Temple are even more temples , scattered throughout the quiet land and surrounded by rich nature , such as Gion -ji Temple and Adashi-no-nenbutsu-ji Temple . They are a bit of a distance away, however you can easily reach them by bike. Around the Saga Toriimoto area, near Adashi-no-nenbutsu-ji, you can enjoy the old townscape of thatched-roof buildings. It is over 30 minutes on foot from Arashiyama Station, so it is not usually crowded. Because there are continual slopes, an electric-assist bicycle is recommended.

8. Daikakuji Temple: A Beautiful Temple with Over 1200 Years of History

The final stop on our Kyoto bike tour is the main temple of the Daikakuji school of the Shingon Sect. It is a temple with over 1200 years of history, built as the palace of Emperor Saga . Not only is it a famous filming location for movies and historical dramas, it is also known as the temple where Ikebana Saga Goryu, the school of ikebana , originated. There are many historical and valuable structures around the precincts, including the Chokushimon (Imperial Envoy Gate), the Main Shrine , the Shinkyoden (Mikagedo), and Godaido (Main Hall). The corridor that connects the shrine and Shinkyoden (Mikagedo) is called the Murasame-no-Roka (rain corridor) for its vertical rain columns and right-angled corridors. The ceilings were very low for protection, to prevent people from swinging swords. The floor is upholstered to appear dull. To the south-front of Shinkyoden (Mikagedo), opposite the Ishibutai, you can see the Imperial Envoy Gate. It was only opened for the Emperor himself or his Imperial Envoy.

Godaido Temple is the Main Hall of Daikakuji Temple . To the east is Osawa-no-ike Pond, Japan's oldest artificial pond. The view of Osawa-no-ike from the Kangetsudai platform of Godaido is breathtaking. There are many other attractions surrounding the pond, which is 1km around including Tenjin Island, Kikugashima Island, and the Teiko-ishi stone, as well as the Nakoso-no-taki Falls to the north of the pond. Take note of the various events that are held throughout the year at Daikakuji Temple . For example, autumn 's Kangetsu-no-yube, an event that began when Emperor Saga floated in a boat under the mid- autumn moon, the Saga Kiku-ten, an event to admire the elegant Saga chrysanthemums, and the Shinku-no-Mizukagami, a nighttime illumination event that surrounds the Osawa-no-ike with spectacular lights. Many people come to enjoy these events each year. It is located about 30 minutes on foot from Randen Arashiyama Station, so it is recommended to go by bike - lucky for you you’ve got your rental bike with you! There is also free bicycle parking for visitors.

Explore another side of the area on a Kyoto bike tour!

About 1km east from Daikakuji Temple is the peaceful rural scenery surrounding Hirosawa Pond, one of Japan's "three swamps of Kyoto." It can be difficult to walk, and inconvenient to get to by the bus that runs along the main street, so it is recommended to use a bike so you can go at your own pace. You can also go through the back roads that are not accessible via public transportation. When visiting Arashiyama , don't just hang around the station. Be sure to check out the various temples and shops, too! If you choose to use a bicycle, you will be able to see many more different sceneries, from magnificent nature to relaxing cityscapes. Sample Itinerary

Itinerary idea in detail.

Includes international flights from a choice of UK airports, including London, Birmingham, Manchester, Newcastle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

In Japan, there’s a lot more to explore beyond its rich history and traditional temples. You’ll find modern art buzzing alongside ancient landmarks like the grand Imperial Palace and the dazzling Golden Pavilion by the lake. This UNESCO World Heritage site is not only a symbol of tradition but also a hotspot for Japan’s vibrant contemporary art scene. On the day you arrive, there are no set plans until a late afternoon briefing. This means you have the freedom to wander and discover this captivating city at your own pace. The briefing, scheduled at your convenience, is a chance to go over trip details, get acquainted with your bikes and gear, and prepare for the adventure ahead.

Kyoto is a fantastic city to explore on a bike. It’s got wide roads, paths for cyclists, and drivers who are careful and considerate. Plus, there are charming little streets along the canals that make biking here super enjoyable in this bike-friendly country. Since Kyoto was Japan’s capital for a long time (twice!), it’s packed with history and culture.

Your ride starts by the river and heads north, where you can see cool spots like the Bamboo Forest and, if you’re lucky, beautiful cherry blossom gardens. You’ll also stop at Tenryuji Temple, which has that classic ancient look that’s lasted through the years. Then, you’ll head east to Ryoanji, known for its amazing UNESCO-approved zen garden. On the way, you can check out Kinkakuji for a stunning view of the city.

Along the route, you’ll find lots of yummy traditional sweets to munch on. And when you’re ready, you’ll pedal back into town along the Kamo River. You get to decide where you want to stop, with the help of our audio guide. Tonight, you’re free to explore the awesome dining spots in Kyoto, but we can recommend some top local eateries if you need ideas.

Now you’ll be staying at a place that’s a mix of a hotel and a Ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. It has beds instead of futons, but you’ll still find Tatami mats from the reception area to all around the property. Your stay will be right in Nara, next to the main train station. Nara Park and important temples like Todai-ji and Kofuku-ji are just a quick ride away (3km), but there’s also a shuttle bus that goes around the area in a circle.

Last night, you stayed on the northern edge of Nara. This morning, you’ll ride through what’s left of the ancient city. There’s not much left of it now, but you’ll see an impressive replica of the palace as you pass by.

During the Nara period from AD 710-794, the city was designed to look like Chang’an, the capital of China’s Tang dynasty. The wealthy people back then used Chinese writing and adopted Buddhism.

As you cycle through Nara, you’ll notice it’s a pretty big city. The cycling route is a bit tricky but manageable, avoiding heavy traffic. Once you leave the city behind, you’ll ride on peaceful back roads through the countryside. You’ll encounter some hills, but they’re not too long or steep. You’ll pass through more farmland and small villages.

As the day goes on, the hills get a bit steeper until you reach the foot of the climb up to Yoshino. It’s only about 6km, though, and the slope isn’t too steep. Yoshino is a lovely place with temples on top of a ridge. Tonight, you’ll stay in a Ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn. You’ll sleep on tatami mats (be sure to take your shoes off!), and there’s a hot spring on site where you can relax your tired legs. Dinner will be served in the traditional Japanese style, giving you a chance to immerse yourself in the culture.

If you’re in the mood for a more relaxed day, there’s a scenic option instead of tackling the climb. After cycling about 35km, you’ll reach Hashimoto Station. Here, you can park your bikes, buy tickets for the Nankai Koya train line, and hop on one of Japan’s longest funiculars to the top of Mount Koya. That’s where your Shukubo, a traditional lodging, is waiting for you.

If you wake up early and go biking, Koyosan will be quiet with few people around. Koyasan, originally called Kong-Obb Ji, is a sacred place for Shingon Buddhism.

In the morning, Koyasan looks like a picture postcard. You might see moss and green plants, and monks walking to meditation sessions. You can visit places like the Konpon Daito Pagoda and memorial grounds.

Back at your Shukubo, breakfast is served in your room. It’s a vegetarian meal like the monks eat. You can also take a dip in an Onsen before starting your ride, but aim to start by 10 am.

The ride down the mountain is exciting. The road is smooth and wider than the one you went up. You might see some cars, but not many since most people are going up.

About halfway down, you’ll leave the main road and bike on smaller ones. After a climb of about 3km, you’ll mostly ride downhill through forests and along a river. As you near Wakayama, the town gets busier. You’ll find a bike path along the river that leads into Wakayama—a calm and flat ride. Wakayama is a port city with lots of history to explore tonight with our recommendations.

Wakayama has plenty to keep you busy in the morning. You can visit the castle, an art museum, and a train museum—all close to the hotel.

Check-out time at the hotel is 10 am, but you can ask for a later check-out, like 11 or 12 pm, depending on how busy the hotel is. When you’re ready to go, just take a quick taxi ride to the train station. From there, you can easily catch a train to Osaka Airport (KIX), Osaka City, or Kyoto.

What our clients say about us

We did a 10 day private tour of Thailand with Amazing Bike Tours (ABT), including a couple of days of biking in Chiang Mai and a day in Phuket. ABT put together a great mix of biking and classic tours at a reasonable price. They responded quickly to emails and were very easy to deal with. The whole trip was fantastic, from the boat trips to James Bond Island to staying overnight in Bangkok and other towns. Our guide, Tom, was not only knowledgeable but also really friendly - he even became our unofficial photographer and shared all his photos with us. I definitely recommend ABT if you're planning a trip to Asia.

We had a fabulous time on the cycling tour from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and Phuket with Amazing Bike Tours company. Our tour guides TOM in Bangkok and Chiang Mai were fantastic, and I want to thank TUK in Phuket for taking such good care of me. This experience will always be special to me.

I booked Cycle Thailand to Cambodia in 2023. Stephen at Amazing Bike Tours was excellent, very helpful, responsive and knowledgeable. In particular, our local tour guide Tom was outstanding. He was essential to connecting with local village people, visit remote villages, and explore exotic food. Can't wait for my next adventure

We had a great time biking through the Mekong Delta and Angkor Wat. Bob was a fantasic tour guide who took us through Angkor Wat and showed us a different side of the delta in his own way. We visited temples and a floating market many delicious snacks. It was really fun ! A great tour !

We spent 12 days with Amazing Bike Tours from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh via Battambang. Our tour was perfectly tailored to our route and physical condition and on the last day, we were safely transported to our beach accommodation in Sihanoukville. The organization was flawless from start to finish. The accommodation was also comfortable, allowing us to rest well after eventful days. The tour provided great value for money. The experiences were unique and could fill two vacation reports! The bikes were perfectly adjusted to our needs, with well-maintained gears and brakes. If there was a minor issue, the guide promptly addressed it. The minivan support was modern and very comfortable. The driver was excellent and we felt safe! Besides the visual impressions, we learned a lot about the country and its people.

TWO DAYS IN KYOTO

Every year, Kyoto attracts a staggering 30 million travelers who come to explore the ancient city, which was once the capital of Japan. Kyoto is now home to 1.5 million residents and 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Its UNESCO Sites include 13 Buddhist temples, 3 Shinto shrines and the Shogun castle. All are open to the public and well worth taking a few days to explore

Bus/Train : If you don’t feel like riding a bike, the public transport system in Kyoto is easy to use and affordable, around 220 yen per trip. Consult your Google Maps app for current bus schedules and transfers. All the bus stops have Wi-Fi as well.

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

Below, you’ll find our recommendations of hidden and popular sites for any guest visiting Kyoto. For each set of activities, read the descriptions, and select 3-5 activities per day that sound especially interesting to you. Don’t try to do more than 2 activities in a morning or afternoon—you’ll be exhausted and won’t have time to truly enjoy the place you’re in. In our experience, it’s always better to thoroughly experience a few places than to sprint through many different ones.

Today, we’ll explore the Fushimi Inari Shrine. First, transfer onto the Nara Line, which takes you to Inari Station. From there, the shrine is only a short walk away. The Fushimi Inari shrine is said to be the most popular place in Kyoto, and for good reason. However, because of its popularity, it can become crowded as early as 7am during peak season! So we highly recommend getting here early, ideally before 7am. You’ll be thoroughly rewarded as strolling through the thousands of tori gates by yourselves is a beautifully peaceful experience.

You can easily spend 1-2 hours exploring the shrine and pathways leading up to the top of the mountain. You’ll also have a nice view of Kyoto with the morning sunlight. The trails all lead into the forest of the sacred Mount Inari, which stands at 233 meters in elevation. There is also a lessor known bamboo grove that connects from the main path near the first big set of tori gates, it’s quite lovely but can be tricky to find, you can check out this blog for more detailed directions.

Once you’ve finished exploring the shrine, return to the entrance, where the shrine is likely full of visitors by this time. Explore the freshest street food at the fushimi inari market. The market vendors have just begun cooking their food. Grab something to eat, and sit down to watch the shrine fill up with excited new visitors.

“The best way to get around Kyoto is on a bicycle! We booked two trips with Ross. He’s very knowledgeable not only on the best routes and temples outside of the usual tourist itinerary but also on the different culture and practices in Kyoto. Our Noru experiences were definitely the highlight of our Kyoto stay! Thanks Ross”

– JPABERMD (TRIPADVISOR)

kyoto self guided bike tour

“This was our third experience and certainly our favorite. Ross is easy to be with, knows and loves Kyoto, and shares it in a laid back manner. A comfortable pace, seeing beauty we wouldn’t have found on our own. Quality bikes, and quiet, colorful side streets, the magic of The Golden Temple and the serenity of the gardens made for the perfect outing”.

– Trish (Trip Advisor)

Friendly kyoto advice.

Email us, call us anytime! We are here to create your best Kyoto memories.

How long are the routes?

They are usually about 3.5 – 4 hours. Our Kyoto City Adventures and Arashiyama route is usually over 4 hours.

Are small children ok?

Our tours are suitable for anyone over the age of 13 who can ride a bicycle. Like most urban cyclists in Kyoto, we typically ride on the sidewalks when possible for a more enjoyable experience.

Do you ride in bad weather?

Comfort and safety of our guests is our highest priority, therefore we usually cancel our bookings if we foresee a 50 percent chance of rain or greater. These will be canceled the day before. There is not much we can do in the rainy season however, so during this time we deal with the rain if and when it comes. It’s very unpredictable so we have raincoats!

What's the best route for me?

Our easiest and most popular route is probably our Secret Kyoto Route. We recommend this route for families with children as traffic is minimal and you can relax and chat more while you pedal.

What's the cancellation policy?

Cancellations are 100 percent refundable up to 24 hours in advance. Cancellations made less than 24 hours in advance are subject to a 5,000 yen penalty. We ask that you let us know of your cancellation as soon as possible. No-shows are nonrefundable. We reserve the right to cancel tours due to heavy rain, storms, or inclement weather. These cancellations will be refunded 100 percent.

Is it safe riding in Kyoto?

Totally! We try our best to ensure that the group stays together at all times, therefore we always ride at a speed that is appropriate for all our guests. Please never hesitate to inform your guide about any requests or concerns you may have during the tour, we pride ourselves on excellent customer service and support along the way. Although water is provided at the start of the tour, we are always happy to stop for a quick refreshment when necessary. We recommend that our customers use the helmets provided at all times and obey all local traffic and safety laws.

We did this as a couple, with another group, a very friendly American family of 5. I am not a confident cyclist; but Kevin (the tour guide), the Japanese crowd & drivers tolerant attitude made it easier for me to enjoy the experience. Paddling through the crowd & vehicles in narrow streets in Kyoto was not as easy as one might think, but it was a great way to see or go to places that we’ve never seen or been to before. Kevin took us to some of the temples & places; provided us with interesting history and information, highly engaging, and also a good photographer. The last part of our tour was a bit wet, we went to the monthly market, where we got to sample some great local dishes, before we head back to the HQ. My highlight was cycling along the paved river bank with the sakuras waving at us. HQ Location: Easy enough to find as it is a few hundreds meters away from the train station. Price: Good value (experience) for money. Tour: Fantastic locations and information. Service (Guide): Highly engaging and entertaining. Conclusion: Highly recommended especially if you have a limited time in Kyoto. We will definitely do this again in other cities with Kevin’s team. -TRIPADVISOR REVIEWER ( SEE MORE REVIEWS )

Adventure Tours

If you’ve ever wanted to really get out there and see what Kyoto’s all about, this is your chance. Come discover a side of Kyoto you haven’t yet seen through unique travel plans that make the most of our roots in the local community, and give you the chance to experience Another Kyoto up close.

Why Adventure Tours in Kyoto?

Just a step outside Japan’s top destination, there is another Kyoto. This is Kyoto’s frontier and it’s just waiting to be explored. Still unknown to the rest of the world, it’s landscapes are older than “Kyoto” itself, with thousands of years of history stretching back to the origins of Japan. Get a taste of sightseeing in Kyoto and visit one of Japan’s best post-COVID destinations. This is a land that calls to all travelers, whether you are looking to bike over the mountains and through the forests, or if you prefer a slower type of journey, visiting with locals as you meander through small villages and bucolic scenery. It’s a 3,000-square-mile adventure right next to Kyoto. This region of Kyoto has a rich sense of what Japan is and what it has always been. It has sprawling mountains, the powerful Japanese Sea, and a touch of the everyday.
