COHEED AND CAMBRIA Announces Massive 2023 North American Tour

COHEED AND CAMBRIA have announced details of a massive North American trek deemed "Neverender: No World For A Waking Mind" tour which is set to get underway this spring. The upcoming dates will see the band performing their seminal album "No World For Tomorrow" in full, along with a strong mix of songs from their most recent album "Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind" . Special guests DEAFHEAVEN will feature as support across the tour, which begins April 28 at The NorVa in Norfolk, Virginia and continues through late May with a second leg picking up on September 6 at the Fillmore Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina and wrapping up at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, California on October 7. Pre-sale tickets for the tour will be available beginning tomorrow, January 25 at 10:00 a.m. local, with public on sale starting Friday, January 27 at 10:00 a.m. local.

To celebrate the forthcoming tour, the band has also shared an official music video for their single "Beautiful Losers" , which is streaming now on COHEED AND CAMBRIA 's official YouTube channel. Filmed while the band was on tour in Germany, the live performance clip illustrates the bond between the band and their fans around the world. The track itself depicts the plight of "Vaxis II" 's main characters Nea and Nostrand , two underdogs battling an evil empire and while the song's title also serves as an allusion to COHEED AND CAMBRIA 's beginnings — frontman Claudio Sanchez and guitarist Travis Stever had briefly been in a band called BEAUTIFUL LOSER , named after a Leonard Cohen novel.

This past summer COHEED AND CAMBRIA released their widely celebrated new album and the latest chapter of "The Amory Wars" saga with "Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind" . The 13-song collection landed at No. 1 on Billboard 's "Top Hard Rock Albums" chart marking the band's fourth No. 1 on the tally. "Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind" is available on all streaming platforms along with a deeply immersive deluxe box set available in COHEED AND CAMBRIA 's official store. Furthermore, the band will have tour exclusive vinyl variants of both "No World For Tomorrow" and "Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind" vinyl available at the upcoming shows.

Produced by the band's own Claudio Sanchez and Zakk Cervini , "Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind" features the singles "A Dissapearing Act" , "Comatose" , "Rise, Naianasha (Cut The Cord)" , "The Liars Club" and "Shoulders" , which broke into the Top 10 on the Active Rock radio charts earlier this year. Named one of Consequence 's "Top 20 Metal & Hard Rock Albums of 2022 (So Far)," "Vaxis II: A Window Of The Waking Mind" has been garnering critical acclaim from around the globe.

"It would be hard to find a rock band with as much of an ambitious, all-encompassing artistic scope as you find with COHEED AND CAMBRIA ," affirmed Juxtapoz while Kerrang! attested " COHEED AND CAMBRIA continue to boldly go where no band has gone before, and long may it continue." Revolver noted " 'Vaxis II' is kind of a perfect record for the pandemic age: an ambitious and truly epic song cycle that you can get thoroughly lost in," and SPIN praised the collection for "flirting more overtly with dance beats, R&B, and symphonic music."

For the last 20 years, COHEED AND CAMBRIA have continuously broken the mold of what a rock band can be, forging their own path and building a universe around their music unlike any other. Whether it is in the way their genre-spanning approach to songwriting has allowed them to bridge worlds without being contained to one, or the multifaceted story arc of their albums and comic book series which mark the longest running concept story in music, COHEED AND CAMBRIA have consistently shaped new standards, never conformed. Comprised of Claudio Sanchez (vocals / guitar), Travis Stever (guitar), Josh Eppard (drums) and Zach Cooper (bass) the band has gripped listeners and press around the globe with their visionary compositions and conceptual mastery.

Taking inspiration from two main characters Claudio Sanchez’s fictional works, prog-rock band Coheed and Cambria from New York, US who since formation in 1995 have steadily climbed to the top of the ranks while achieving global success with their Children of the Fence firmly by their side.

Rising from the ashes of their former band Toxic Parents, Claudio Sanchez (lead vocals) and Travis Stevers (rhythm guitar) experimented with a host of genres influenced by the likes of: Led Zeppelin, Misfits, Pink Floyd, At The Drive-In and Iron Maiden. Originally known as Shabutie, the band released their debut EP “Plan to Take Over the World” in 1999 through Wisteria Records and followed later that year with “The Penelope EP”.

With the new millennia came new direction encapsulated in the release of their third EP “Delirium Trigger” (2000) with many of the tracks based on science fiction comic series Sanchez had been penning, initially known as “The Bag.On.Line Adventures” and later became “The Amory Wars”. It would be these works which would evoke a recurring theme which would inspire future material for the band starting with the name change to Coheed and Cambria after the two main characters.

Having signed with Equal Vision Records, the band went on to release their debut full length album “The Second Stage Turbine Blade” in 2002, taking its concept from the comic series. Later in the year the band connected with a man who take their career to unprecedented heights, Blaze James who would become their manager. Spending the next few years relentlessly touring playing alongside: Linkin Park, The Used, Slipknot, AFI and Trivium unleashed them into the public as they saw their fanbase known as Children of the Fence (another comic reference) increase tenfold.

It was the release of their second album “In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3” in 2003 which really got the ball rolling. Certifying platinum in the US, it caught the attention of Columbia Records and in 2005 they signed a multi-album deal. Five top 10 albums later, line-up changes, a fine selection of festival appearances across the globe, Coheed and Cambria continue pushing genre divides while remaining true to the very essence of what they’ve created.

Live reviews

Enigmatic as they might appear, there is plenty to explore in Coheed and Cambria's eclectic catalog of albums with their multi-faceted and diverse delivery. Following a central sci-fi concept, the lyrics tell a broad and interesting story that is just as captivating as the incredible musicianship which exhibits a strong progressive-rock influence, yet can most certainly tone the complexity down at points in favor of more straight-forward rock anthems. The technicality blends so well with a fair amount of accessibility, which makes the best of both of those worlds. With a story so complex and seemingly neverending, Coheed and Cambria manage to suck you into their fictional world comfortably, easily, and very hastily. Their music shines in every aspect, demonstrating an ample amount of creativity that is well-balanced with technical proficiency. However, the fantasy that their lyrics depict is shown full-force with their live show, where you are one with this alternate universe. Everything fictional about their music feels so undeniably real in the presence of the four prog-rockers as they pummel you with an onslaught of flashy solos and riffs, complex drum patterns, and singer Claudio Sanchez's strong vocal delivery that hypnotizes an audience at their show even more than a listener of their albums. The atmosphere becomes so strong as they take hold of the stage and it becomes illuminated with their intense and fitting light show, which ends up becoming a part of the music itself. It goes beyond being a "rock show" and in turn becomes a beautiful and spectacular event.

With their music being almost as intriguing as their choice in hairstyle, Coheed and Cambria are an interesting and involving live act to view. Although a lot of their albums are conceptual and the music feels as though it must be played together, the band inventively merge songs from their entire discography to deliver a live show that is assured to please all members of the audience.

Having formed twenty years ago, the band has an expert understanding of the progressive rock genre and plays their music at an exceptional level. There is never a note out of place or a sound issue on the likes of complex, spanning 'A Favor House Atlantic'. The music is developed and expanded for the live performance and seems even larger than that found on the recorded albums. The audience watch in awe as Travis Stever manipulates his guitar to create momentous sounds.

The band although entranced in their own private world do pause to thank the crowds frequently and enjoy the cheers after singles such as 'Blood Red Summer'. The largest reaction of the night is saved for a gargantuan rendition of 'Here We Are Juggernaut' which leaves the crowd in a stunned sense of wonder.

Saw them at the Metro Theatre in Sydney for their first Australian show of the Color Before The Sun tour. Needless to say the music was fantastic! The band seemed happy and calm as they rocked the show. As an audience member I felt engaged by the band, with Claudio gesturing for everyone to sing along, especially early on during IKSSE3 to get everyone excited and involved. I felt a sense of community with other fans and the atmosphere of the show was good. My favourite moments were Claudio getting the whole audience to sing lines like "Man your own jackhammer!" and "Raise your hands high!" complete with bright lights being shone on us, and when they ended the show with Welcome Home and Claudio didn't even have to sing much of it - the band just smiled as the audience roared the lyrics in unison. Coheed really gives the audience a sense of appreciation and you can see why they have such a strong and committed fanbase. I will definitely see them again!

I hadn't heard any of The Story So Far, and very little of Taking Back Sunday's Music...they were both decent, probably would have been better had I known any of their songs.

Coheed blew the motherfucking doors off! I love that they are no bullshit. They come out, rock out with basically no stops (i.e. no thank you and pandering after every song) and then get off the stage. Claudio's vocals are as good (if not better) live than they are on the albums, they relish having the crowd into the music, cutting out playing instruments/singing periodically and letting the crowd belt out a bar or two on their own.

They are absolutely one of the best live bands that I have seen...which is why when a friend asked me if I wanted to go to the show, I immediately said yes, as I needed to see them again. Was not disappointed in the slightest.

10/10 - Will absolutely go see them again.

It was certainly a good performance, with every member keeping energy high. I'm always impressed with Travis being able to hit those complex guitar lines exactly like they sound on album.

There was a solid mix of old and new, including the two new songs available to hear online. Starting with 'In Keeping' and 'Devil in Jersey'.

But all that said, it was cold and raining. Non-stop rain, and the ground was turning to mush. I don't think I could go to another Outer Harbor concert without getting ticket insurance. I love Coheed, but that cold was brutal. We actually left before Modest Mouse and Rise Against, it was just too cold.

I've seen Coheed and Cambria 8 times and their shows never fail to amaze. They've continued to get better and better when it comes to crowd involvement and the insensitivity level is always through the roof. Whether you're a die-hard fan or a new listener, they cover some of their 'greats' as well as some newer music. Catching a 'neverender' tour is definitely recommended. Their 'neverender' tours consist of covering one of their albums from start to finish with a separate set that will cover hits from other albums of theirs.

Honestly, it seemed like they were having an off night. I've seen them before twice now and those other instances were flawless performances.

It seemed like there were many mistakes, and they were not very cohesive tempo-wise. And there were lots of lyrics skipped made some of the songs feel disjointed. To cap it all off they did not play an encore even when everyone was chanting wanting them to stick around. They just ended the set with "Welcome Home". It was a bit of a let-down.... Still had fun

My first show ever!! Im 15 and i was probably the only underage one there. I went with my 2 sisters and their boyfriends (soon to be husbands). The first opening act was ok and a little too metal. But Thank You scientist was an amazing band!! The violinist killed it! Coheed was also spectacular performers. The show was fun and filled with headbanging and moshpits. The crowd loved it. My first show ever was amazing!! Im definitely gonna start going to more concerts!

It was fantastic, as my first Coheed and Cambria concert this was amazing. The opening band Astronoid was incredible, The contortionist were very unique and different and man, getting to see Coheed Live was such an experience. The crowd was so energetic, the song list was perfect, and just being there was such a blessing. I cannot wait for them to come to Orlando again or a surrounding area so I can experience this again!

Coheed is always great; the music, their stage presence were as good as ever. Sadly, their set was very short. It seemed like Taking Back Sunday played longer. When you're not a fan of the undercard bands, it's hard not to feel a little disappointed when the headliner doesn't play a longer set. Probably dumb downtown noise ordinances were responsible for the hard out, but why not start the show earlier if that's an issue?

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

coheed and cambria tour 2023 poster

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

coheed and cambria tour 2023 poster

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

coheed and cambria tour 2023 poster

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

coheed and cambria tour 2023 poster

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

coheed and cambria tour 2023 poster

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

coheed and cambria tour 2023 poster

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

coheed and cambria tour 2023 poster

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The 13 best new metal songs you need to hear right now

Kittie, Coheed And Cambria and Hanabie are among the best new metal songs this week. Plus, vote for your favourite!

Kittie/Coheed And Cambria/Vulvodynia/Simone Simons/Hanabie

Happy Friday! We're back again with a fresh batch of brilliant new songs for your listening pleasure, hunting high and low to offer everything from the latest singles from veteran favourites Coheed And Cambria and Kittie to rising stars like Hanabie, Vended and Vulvodynia, exploring everything from deathcore to nu metal, prog and black'n'roll.

But first, the results of last week's vote ! All That Remains roared back to life with a third-place finish on latest single Divine, but they were ultimately beat to the runner-up position by Indian death metal brutes Godless. In a total change of pace, it was returning goth metal stars Unto Others who took top spot, Butterfly proving that even with summer fast approaching we all love a bit of darkness.

This week we're casting the net far and wide, finding bands everywhere from Sweden and the US to South Africa and Japan, yet more proof that metal truly is a global phenomenon. But regardless of where these bands come from, it's their music that matters most and we need your help to decide which songs excite you most. In that spirit, don't forget to cast your vote below - and have an excellent weekend!

Metal Hammer line break

Kittie - Vultures

After blazing their way back on a comeback trail with a string of stellar standalone singles, Kittie have now announced we’re getting a brand new album. Titled Fire, it’ll be with us in just over a month on June 21, new single Vultures showing just how much the band’s sound has evolved since they returned, sidestepping the nu metal revival in favour of throat-shredding melodeath style howls and tight, powerful riffs.

Coheed And Cambria - The Joke

While new music from Coheed And Cambria is always a cause for celebration, we shouldn’t get our hopes up for a follow-up to Vaxis II just yet. New single The Joke was recorded during those sessions and carries the same polished sheen as that album’s finest tracks, albeit with a liberal dose of electronic effects on everything from Claudio Sanchez ’s voice to the tone of the guitars, helping make the track feel like a fun oddity amidst the band’s catalogue. Extra marks for the gorgeously shot, Joker-referencing music video, too.

Vulvodynia - Entabeni

Ultra-technical deathcore from South Africa, Vulvodynia have always delighted in the genre’s most vicious, cartoonish elements (you want pigsqueals? They’ll give you pigsqueals). With guitarist Lwandile Prusent taking over vocals, the band’s freshly announced new album Entabeni seems to both stay the course for the band’s hyperactive brand of extremity whilst also pushing their lyrics in new directions, the title track drawing on African folklore as a show of how they are evolving and coming into their own after a decade of toil.

Simone Simons - Aeterna (ft. Ayreon)

Apparently not busy enough recording a new album with Epica and preparing for some massive, orchestrally-enhanced symphonic shows in September, vocalist SImone Simons has announced that her debut solo album Vermillion will be released on August 23. Aeterna offers a first glimpse at what the album may have in store, returning to some of the more operatic stylings of her earlier work with Epica whilst adding a buzzing electronica element that suggests she’s not just sticking to familiar territory.

Bleeding Through - Our Brand Is Chaos

Bleeding Through might have risen amidst the 2000s metalcore boom, but the band have long since departed those realms in favour of extremity. Case in point, new single Our Brand Is Chaos sits somewhere between the apocalyptic grandeur of a Fleshgod Apocalypse and an almost stripped back version of the maelstrom at the heart of A New Kind Of Horror- era Anaal Nathrakh, the vocal lines kept fairly simple to ensure maximum howl-alongs. Altogether now, fuck with us and find out .

Hanabie - Girls Talk

Since taking the metal world by storm with their second album Reborn Superstar! in summer 2023, Hanabie have shown time and again that genres are something that happens to other people. Latest single Girls Talk is a perfect demonstration of that, weaving a line between ravecore-style breakouts and riffs and snarling metalcore with an overall sense of infectious enthusiasm that has us bouncing with excitement at the prospect of catching the band live again this year. With just a few weeks to go until Download Festival, we won’t have to wait long.

Vended - Nihilism

Currently bringing their hyper-kinetic brand of nu metal to Europe, Vended’s latest single Nihilism is yet more proof that this band are going for broke when it comes to vicious, all-out sonic bedlam. Flipping between gravel-throated roars and ascendant, radio-friendly choruses, the Iowans are making a clear case for their breakthrough into the big leagues - meaning their upcoming UK tour might be the most intimate setting you’ll see this lot in.

Orange Goblin - Cemetary Rats

Orange Goblin haven’t exactly made a secret of their love for Black Sabbath , but we dare say the bass tone of new single Cemetary Rats would be enough to bring a tear to Geezer Butler’s eye. Taken from the band’s new record Science, Not Fiction - out July 19 - this is British stoner/doom at its finest, grease-slicked riffs and gruff shout-alongs that have us itching to be in a sweaty basement. Speaking of - the band will be offering a sneak-peek at London’s Raven Records next week as part of Desertfest. If you love riffs and great tunes, it’d be daft not to go.

Thou - Unbidden Guest

Meaner than a bear with a sore arse - and with snarls twice as vicious - Thou’s latest single Unbidden Guest hits like concrete after a 100 foot drop. But then, that’s about par for the course from the Louisiana sludge sextet, new album Umbilical shaping up to be a typically bleak but undeniably thrilling affair. We’ll know for sure when it arrives on May 31.

 Evergrey - Say

Powered by pendulous riffs and striding, puffed-chest choruses, Evergrey’s latest single Say is reflective of the brighter tone the Swedish band are trying to capture with latest album Theories Of Emptiness . That said, the band have never lacked for a sense of triumph in their music, but Say feels especially potent instrumentally, massive solos tipping the scale more towards arena-sized bombast.

Rezn - Collapse

Rezn might fall somewhere in the broad prog/doom sphere, but the meditative, decidedly Eastern-inspired guitars of Collapse also hint to a sense of transcendent otherworldliness that can’t be constrained to any one genre. Taken from new album Burden - out June 14 - Collapse evokes a sense of grandeur as if you’ve just discovered a long-forgotten, crumbling empire, seeding just enough mystery amidst the melodies to have the listener unsure of what will come next at any given moment.

Withering Surface - Denial Denial Denial

What says summer better than some primo black’n’roll? Well alright, probably a few things, but we won’t deny the greased-up riffs and blackened snarls of Withering Surface’s latest single Denial Denial Denial haven’t got us wanting to fire up the grill and crack open a cold one, the Danish band treading the line between Motorhead and Abbath with their own sense of flair.

Far From Refuge - Ghost Of Eros

We won’t lie - the first time we heard Far From Refuge’s Ghost Of Eros we thought we’d stumbled into some kind of space-time vortex back to the glory days of Myspace and late 00s metalcore. Such is the magic of nostalgia, and the sound of sweeping riffs and powerful melodic choruses might have fallen out of favour amidst metalcore’s slide towards everything from death metal to r’n’b and straight-up hardcore, but it still has a sense of potency that has us banging our heads with glee.
