It was a little rushed at the end when were shooed out under fear of darkness (which frightened my grandchild) although the penguins were still coming. Otherwise excellent. • D1753TOcathyb 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Crowded with people rather than penguins Like many visitors, we eagerly anticipated seeing many penguins emerging in the darkness from the sea during the so-called 'Penguin Parade'. Unfortunately, we only saw less than 20 emerge from the sea, although we did see (and hear) a few more around their burrows as we walked back over the boardwalks. Some of these sightings were close up which we enjoyed. Apparently, more Little Penguins keep coming during the night. But expect to see lots of people, rather than heaps of penguins at this event. Nice visitor center with shops and eatery. Read more Written March 30, 2024

  • Bmoe 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Guided tour of the penguin parade. An absolute joy. Such a wonderful evening. We did the guided tour. We were given an ear piece and binoculars. Our guide was Graham and he was superb. Passionate about wildlife conservation and full of great information. We walked down along a boardwalk to the sea. Along the way seeing wallabies and a few baby penguins in their burrows. We had a stand with seating very close to the sea . Graham told us more info while we waiting for the first arrivals . Oh they are so cute. They waddle out of the sea in small groups and up the beach they come. We got a great view. After 20 mins we went back up to the boardwalk to see them waddling along “The penguin highway’” to their burrows. On the night we were there they counted 594 penguins coming onto the beach which was great . It varies often many more arrive. I’d say wrap up warm . They have food & drinks at the visitors centre but we got a Subway to eat on the way. No photography allowed as it frightens the penguins. They give you a link to high quality unwatered -marked photos & video. Would really recommend the Guided Tour. Read more Written March 24, 2024
  • racdean 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Appalling behaviour We attended the General Viewing.  The visitors centre,  (and of course the penguins) are 5 star but our experience was marred by inconsiderate tourists who completely disrespected the Rangers instructions. People continued to take photos when asked not to, even chasing the poor penguins with cameras (and flashes) along the boardwalk.  One lady had her  camera torch on.  More Rangers needed there People arrived late, yet barged straight to the sand ignoring the Rangers requests to sit further back.  As a result, our attention was more directed to the commotion of people standing in front of us than towards the penguins. We couldn't stand it any more and left.    We're Australian, have travelled much of the world, but this was one of the worst examples of selfish tourism I've seen. PLEASE - reduce guest numbers, increase the price, and deliver more education before letting people loose out there.  We know raising money is important but still felt sorry for the penguins. • Ruth S 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Penguins and more This was a great tour. We visited an animal sanctuary where we fed wallabies and kangaroos, while seeing lots of other animals. We then went on to some amazing views points with great views across white sands, rock formations and lots of ocean with glances of wallabies by the side of the road from the bus After a dinner stop came the highlight- the penguin parade! I paid for Penguin Plus seats which were well worth the money. The penguins were so cute as they emerged from the surf, so many at a time, and proceeded to walk and fall over as they made there way to their nests. Be aware no photos are allowed and as it is in the evening it can be very cold so wrap up warm! Our tour guide was full of fun, interesting information with a fabulous way with animals. I would definitely recommend this trip. Read more Written March 17, 2024
  • 1andrew9 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent Ranger experience was worth the upgrade. If you get the general viewing you will be disappointed. All rangers were very courteous and professional and gave loads of details. Ranger viewing area was better than the general admission area by miles. Penguins are a must see if you visit the island and you should book well in advance. You see them come ashore then waddling up the beach to their nests taking breaks along the way. I can’t remember the name of our ranger but she had a white feather in the back of her hair which made it much easier to spot in the darkness especially when we joined the general public on the boardwalks. I suggest all the rangers take a similar approach. Read more Written March 15, 2024
  • SG1Lincoln40 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Fun but overcrowded Had a great time, but it is hard to see so many people in the same place while viewing wildlife. Experience - The penguin experience itself is well set up. Lots of staff members, the boardwalks are well built, and the information provided is of a high quality. However, this is really just a tourist attraction, and you start to feel sad for the wildlife. Arriving early allows you to take your time along the board walk where there was lots to see including cape baron goose, swamp wallaby and other birds. We just bought general view tickets, found a good spot down the front on the inner edge (directed by the guides to this area as the 'best spot'). In the time waiting for the sun to set the guides provided great information about the penguins and other wildlife in the area. When the sun set the penguins immediately started making their way up the beach and it was great to see them. There were strict rules reiterated over and over again that photography of any type was not allowed at any time, and yet the number of morons that simply thought the rules didn't apply to them was insane. Over and over again the rangers reminded people, both verbally and with signage in different languages but yet so many people just kept trying. The rangers remained calm which was impressive, because even I wanted to tell people to stop. Following the arrival of the penguins you can walk back along the boardwalk, and we got to see them closer up, along with eastern barred bandicoots and possums. Overall it was fun, but there were just so many people, the wildlife were still out and about, so I guess they are used to it. But its not quite the same as going for a walk in the bush to see what you can find. Restaurant - We ate dinner at the Shearwater Restaurant, and I was incredibly surprised by the quality of the food. It was expensive as you would expect from any tourist location, but I had the salmon and soba noodles and was impressed! It was a decent size, well cooked and it was nice to have a healthier option and not just deep-fried foods and burgers. Happily, recommend eating here ahead of going down to the parade ground. Even though it was booked out for the night and there were lots of people around the food came quick and was hot and fresh. Read more Written March 12, 2024

Feels like we had the best of everything. After watching them, and in some casing being nose-to-nose with some cuties, after 20 mins we also got to go above and view from the premium grandstand. Our 7 & 9 yr olds LOVED the experience. #thetravelmethodau Read more Written March 10, 2024
  • CrystalT521 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles The cutest little penguins! With my husband and his mum, we enjoyed seeing the sweet little fairy penguins and we felt the rangers did their best to create a safe environment for the penguins and an educational experience for the visitors, which brings in a lot of money towards nature conservation in the area. Many visitors did not follow the rangers' requests and guidelines however and were disrespectful, which was sad to see. We still enjoyed the experience though and hopefully the penguin population there will continue to thrive! Read more Written February 25, 2024

This was an opportunity to go with family members. I loved it! I can see why, even to this day, it is a fantastic "must do" experience. What I found the best was the most friendliest and helpful staff! The whole evening was a joy and brought much happiness. The downfall of the evening was leaving the car park to find some people bag all their trash and dump it where their car was parked :( Take it back with you and dispose of the trash properly. • ckhsu32 0 contributions 2.0 of 5 bubbles Disappointing Lack of Empathy and Sensitivity at Philip Island Penguin Parade My family and I recently visited the Philip Island Penguin Parade with high hopes of experiencing a memorable evening watching adorable penguins make their way back to shore. However, our experience was marred by a severe lack of empathy and sensitivity from the staff when we lost our son in the crowd. Despite the gravity of the situation, we were met with indifference and apathy when seeking assistance from one particular staff member. We expected to be treated with understanding and compassion, but instead encountered a staff who told us he did not care. I urge the management of the Philip Island Penguin Parade to thoroughly investigate the shortcomings outlined above and take immediate steps to address them. Every family visiting your attraction deserves to be met with professionalism, responsiveness, and empathy from those tasked with assisting them. Thank you for your attention to this matter. We hope that our feedback prompts positive changes in the way your staff interacts with visitors, especially those with young children. Read more Written February 15, 2024

Start off by being picked up in the morning by your driver/guide in an air-conditioned minivan with plenty of room to stretch and enjoy the scenic landscapes that unfold as you cruise along.

The guide does a great job of telling interesting stories and facts about the places as you pass by, ensuring there’s never a dull moment on the tour!

Next up, we have a slightly longer tour for you that’s ideal if it’s your first time in Australia and really want to see some of the best this part of the country has to offer.

The Phillip Island Penguin, Brighton Beach, Moonlit Sanctuary from Melbourne Tour  is a whirlwind of hidden gems and popular tourist sites, surely to bring a smile to your face! If you’re looking for a tour to take you away from the hustle and bustle of lively Melbourne, this is a fantastic choice.

Once again, with this tour you’ll get conveniently picked up right from your hotel lobby and set out in an air-conditioned vehicle to Brighton.  Brighton Beach is filled with fascinating history and charm, complete with colorful Brighton Beach bathing boxes, pristine sands, and shell hunting!

Your guide will be right there to relay the history of the beach, like how the boxes were built in the 1800s in an effort to protect the modesty of bathers.

Next on the itinerary is the Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park, which was a blast for kids and adults, alike! Here, you’ll learn all about tons of different local animals – some of which I’d never heard of before, as well as the “common” Australian critters like koalas.

I really enjoyed their signature “Conservation in Action” wildlife show, where you’ll get to see and learn about many lesser-known animals to create awareness.

After this, it’s time for some fresh air at The Nobbies and Seal Rocks, where you’ll get to appreciate phenomenal rocky views and of course, the fur seal colony. If you’re a photographer or simply enjoy dramatic landscapes, you’re sure to love it here.

Continue on to the local beach for some adorable entertainment in the form of the famous Penguin Parade! The Penguin Parade takes you and your group to a viewing platform where you’ll get to view hundreds of little penguins coming up from the ocean and over the sand on the way to their nearby burrows.

This is a safe way for you to get up close and personal with these cuties, without anyone being able to touch or affect them in any way. You can even choose the Penguin Parade Plus or guided Ranger Tour upgrade to see them even more up close!

After your guide picks you and the rest of your party up from your hotel in the morning, you’ll set out to the Tooradin Jetty before anything else. This popular fishing hot spot is super close to the town’s airfield, and its delicious seafood restaurant is open to the public.

After fueling up on some local eats, you’ll then make your way over to the infamous Phillip Island Nature Parks’ Koala Reserve!

Everyone loves these cuddly little marsupials, and you’ll not only get to see them but learn all about them with your rangers to guide you through the fascinating reserve.

  • Duration: 8.5 hours
  • Includes:  Admission to Phillip Island Nature Park with Penguin Parade (general viewing) and Phillip Island Koala Conservation Reserve, live commentary, experienced local driver guide, air-conditioned new midi-coach travel

Australia is a country that has just about everything to offer, from busy cities to completely remote landscapes. On this tour, you’ll get a perfect mix of both, traveling from Melbourne to see some of the most intriguing locations the continent boasts.

Clocking in at 8.5 hours, if you have a day free you definitely need to consider taking the Phillip Island Penguin and Koala Highlights Day-Trip from Melbourne Tour .

After being picked up by your guide, you’ll travel by air-conditioned new midi-coach for less than 2 hours out to Phillip Island. This is such an amazing place if you’re at all interested in seeing what Victorian country life by the seaside is like, along with surfing and local wildlife.

This scenic haven offers coastal views galore, and it’s here where you’ll get to visit the Koala Reserve and see these cute critters up close.

Learn about the history of the koala, the Reserve itself, and take in this poignant reminder of the importance of preserving the last bastion of natural woodland in the area.

Cape Woolamai is now calling your name, coming with some of the best surfing in the world and a calm bay for laidback viewing. Continue on through the charming coastal township of Cowes, where you’ll appreciate the picture-perfect scenery of Westernport Bay.

This rugged coastline comes with the optional guided walk down to the boardwalks where you’ll have the chance to see penguins nesting in their burrows.

After, journey through the island’s backroads with plenty of postcard-perfect coastal views before arriving to the Penguin Parade.

Here, you’ll witness the littlest kind of penguin walk from the water to their burrows as the guide offers a fun and educational commentary. This is a must for the adrenaline lovers!

If you’re looking for something fun and exciting to do with the family, I can’t recommend this one enough!

What I really love about this tour is that you get the chance to see these beautiful local animals up close in their natural habitats, while feeling confident that the organizations that support them are really looking out for their best interests.

Your day starts out with a convenient hotel pickup in the morning, driving around 1 hour and 45 minutes directly to Phillip Island. Upon arrival, a Phillip Island Nature Parks Ranger will be there to greet you and give you an immersive presentation about the koalas and their history in the country.

After the Koala Wildlife Park, you’ll take a quick cruise over to Phillip Island where you’ll learn all about the hundreds of different types of animals living there, natively. Pass by Cape Woolamai, which is really popular with surfers and tourists that come from all over the world to see the rocky coast.

Cowes Beach was one of my favorites, located along the calmer Westernport Bay and known for its charming homes, unique shops, and tons of tasty eateries.

After fueling up on some local food, head to the Nobbies Rocks where you’ll get the chance to walk down to the boardwalks to see little penguins nesting in their burrows.

  • Koalas : These are iconic Australian animals that are famous for their fluffy ears, round noses and sleep habits. You can see them at the Koala Conservation Reserve. You can walk through the treetop boardwalks and spot them from eye level or join a ranger-led tour to get even closer.
  • Kangaroos and wallabies : These marsupials are in the same family as koalas. They have powerful hind legs, long tails and pouches where they carry their young. You can see them all around the island, such as the Phillip Island Wildlife Park, where you can hand-feed them, or the Churchill Island Heritage Farm, where you can watch them hop around the historic buildings.

What will I see on Phillip Island?

Phillip Island is famous for its pristine sand beaches, rugged coastline and of course the Penguin Parade. Also the Australian fur seal colony at The Nobbies and koalas curled up in gum trees. There is also the Phillip Island Winery, the Churchill Island Heritage Farm and the Phillip Island Historical Society Museum.

How do I get to Phillip Island?

You can drive to Phillip Island, take a bus or train. There is also a ferry.

  • Driving takes 90 minutes from Melbourne.
  • By bus, you can take a V/Line coach from Southern Cross Station in Melbourne to Cowes on Phillip Island.
  • By train, you can take a V/Line train from Southern Cross Station to Dandenong Station, then catch a connecting bus to Phillip Island.
  • By ferry, you can take a Western Port Ferries service from Stony Point on the Mornington Peninsula to Cowes.

What’s the best time of year to go to Phillip Island?

Phillip Island has a mild maritime climate with four distinct seasons. The average temperature ranges from 55°F in the winter to 75°F in the summer. If you want to see the Penguin Parade, you can visit any time of the year as they arrive at sunset every day.

To see whales, dolphins, and seals, you should go between May and October when they migrate along the coast. To enjoy the beaches and try surfing, you should go between November and April when the weather is warm.

Should I buy tickets to the Penguin Parade advance?

Yes, you should pre-book your tour as it can sell out. This is especially important during peak periods such as the December and January summer holidays and school holidays.
