Exploring The 600-Acre Oregon Wildlife Safari Park

african safari oregon

For many of us, a trip to Africa to see these animals roam free in their natural habitat is a dream that may never come true. But the Wildlife Safari in Winston, Oregon , just south of Roseburg, provides a rare opportunity to witness the beauty and wonder of these creatures up close and personal. Whether you're a wildlife enthusiast, a family looking for an unforgettable adventure, or simply seeking a unique and exciting experience, the Wildlife Safari is a must-visit destination.

Wildlife Safari in Oregon

zebras wildlife safari

Here's a quick overview of the safari village.

The park is situated on 600 acres of land and is home to over 500 animals from all over the world.

The park offers a variety of ways to experience the animals, including a drive-thru safari, a walk-through exhibit, and even an animal encounter program where visitors can get up close and personal with some of the park's most popular residents.

The park ardently champions animal welfare and prioritizes the health of its residents , implementing numerous initiatives that contribute to wildlife conservation on both local and global scales. With a steadfast focus on animal health and well-being, the park's various programs embody its dedication to preserving and protecting the diverse species that call it home. Through these concerted efforts, the park not only raises awareness about animal health and conservation but also fosters meaningful connections between visitors and the wildlife they encounter.

The Wildlife Safari is also a great destination for families with children, as the park offers a variety of educational programs and activities for kids, including a summer camp and a junior zookeeper program.

In addition to the animal exhibits, the park also features a restaurant, gift shop, and playground area.

The park is open year-round, but hours and availability may vary depending on the season and weather conditions.

Visitors are encouraged to follow park rules and guidelines, including staying in their vehicles during the drive-through safari and respecting the animals' space and boundaries.

african safari oregon

As you approach the park, the picturesque landscape of Southern Oregon unfolds before you, providing a glimpse of what's in store for you. Unlike typical zoos, the Wildlife Safari offers a unique and unforgettable experience. The park is home to a diverse array of amazing animals, many of which are native to Africa, and all of which roam freely in their natural habitats.

wildlife safari

The Wildlife Safari ranks among the top 10% of accredited zoos and aquariums in the United States, a testament to its commitment to excellence.

The park's origins date back 38 years when founder Frank Hart envisioned a sanctuary dedicated to preserving and protecting endangered and rare species from across the globe. His dream has since materialized into the thriving Wildlife Safari we know today.

african safari oregon

If you're thinking this is just another zoo or an exploitation of animal rights (“Tiger King”, I'm looking at YOU), think again. I'll probably never get to visit Africa in my lifetime, so this may be the closest I'll ever come to a real safari.

As you drive through the park in your own vehicle, you'll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of the most magnificent animals on the planet.

african safari oregon

Imagine watching as a majestic Southern White Rhino grazes mere feet away from your car, or spotting a herd of Damara Zebras frolicking in the open fields. The experience is nothing short of breathtaking.

african safari oregon

And let's not forget about the Brindled Wildebeest, one of the park's most striking residents. These fascinating creatures, with their distinctively patterned coats and impressive horns, are a sight to behold. Seeing them in their natural habitat is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. In addition to the Damara Zebra, Southern White Rhino, and Brindled Wildebeest, visitors can also see a variety of other African animals such as giraffes, cheetahs, lions, and elephants.

Among my favorite exhibits are the American Bison, Brown Bear, Ringtail Lemurs, Budgie Aviary, Sumatran Tiger, and the Safari's world-famous Cheetahs.

african safari oregon

Wildlife Safari boasts one of the top cheetah breeding research centers on the planet and is the number one cheetah breeding facility outside of Africa and number two on Earth. Only around 10,000 cheetahs still exist in the wild, so the 219 cubs born at WS since 1972 are helping to keep this endangered species alive. You may even catch a glimpse of KJ and Rhino, the unlikely lifelong friendship between a big cat and a dog.

african safari oregon

Watch out for the Australian Emus toward the end of your car ride, haha. They are extremely unafraid of humans, even when you're obeying the rules of keeping your hands inside the vehicle at all times.

african safari oregon

Bombarded from all sides, this Emu took a turn at my dad as captured in this adorable video below!

Always Free Safari Village

Embark on an exciting adventure at the Always Free Safari Village, a destination that offers visitors a unique and immersive experience, open daily for all ages. This enchanting locale showcases a stunning botanical wonderland alongside a diverse range of captivating animal exhibits, including cheetahs, alligators, red pandas, and more. Throughout the day, you can enjoy informative keeper talks, interact with animals at the children's petting zoo, and explore various attractions without spending a dime.

Cheetah Encounters

Get up close and personal with Wildlife Safari's Ambassador Cheetahs at the Cheetah Spot, located within the Safari Village. The cheetahs rotate regularly to provide off-display animals with the opportunity to sprint and frolic in the cheetah drive-through. You might even spot a skunk or cavy in the area during your visit.

Camel Adventures

Experience the graceful stride of the one-humped Dromedary Camel, native to the Arabian Peninsula. Climb aboard for a memorable ride and don't forget to smile for the camera—these camels certainly will! Camel rides are available during the spring and summer seasons, weather permitting.

Safari Gift Shop

Don't leave without a souvenir to remember your Safari Village adventure! The Safari Gift Shop offers a wide range of merchandise, from t-shirts and jackets to collectible rocks, plush animals, and toys.

Satisfy Your Hunger at the Safari Grill

Treat yourself to the best burger in town at the Safari Grill. Complete your meal with delicious sides like onion rings or a chili dog, and savor your lunch either indoors or in one of the charming outdoor picnic areas.

Children's Petting Zoo

african safari oregon

The Wildlife Safari provides a hands-on experience with friendly goats and adorable donkeys. For just 50 cents, you can even feed the animals!

Australian Walkabout

Explore the wonders of Australia by visiting the Wallaroos and the bird aviary. Be sure to greet the Kookaburra outside the Walkabout, and for just $1, you can purchase an aviary feed stick for a truly interactive experience.

Feed the Koi Fish

For only 50 cents, grab some fish feed and enjoy feeding the koi fish. Be quick, though, as the ducks might snatch up the feed before the fish get a chance!

Village Train Station

All aboard the village train for a scenic tour around the Safari Village. Members are entitled to complimentary train rides, so don't miss out on this delightful experience.

Admission Rates

Visitors can choose from the following admission rates:

Adults: 23.95

Children: 17.95

Seniors: 20.95

Upon admission, visitors will receive a map of the park to enhance their experience and help identify animals in nature.

Group Rates

Wildlife Safari offers group rates for groups of 12 or more. For more information on group rates, please contact guest services at 541.679.6761 or email them at [email protected] .

Drive-Thru Experience

Driving through Wildlife Safari typically takes about 1-1/2 hours to complete. During the drive, visitors can observe a variety of animals such as lions, tigers, bears, zebras, and more.

Come and experience Wildlife Safari's unique Drive-Thru animal park and get a chance to witness different animals in their natural habitats.

When is the Optimal Time to Visit Wildlife Safari Oregon?

african safari oregon

One of the prime times to explore Wildlife Safari Oregon is during the winter months, according to Destiny Molatore, who is the development director of the safari park. As the temperatures drop, the animals become more active, offering a livelier experience for visitors.

Additionally, the park tends to be less crowded in the winter, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the wonders of the safari. While Wildlife Safari is open throughout the year, the winter season presents a unique opportunity to truly appreciate the park's splendor.

Take a trip past the incredibly inspiring African elephants and prepare to enter the land of emu, yak and white-naped cranes as your tour of the incredibly diverse wildlife of planet Earth continues on in Asia. Dare yourself to end your journey with a trip through a carnivore loop featuring Wildlife Safari’s top cheetah breeding grounds and ferocious Sumatran Tigers. At Wildlife Safari, adventure rules daily.

And it isn’t just a drive-through animal park. Wildlife Safari boasts one of the top cheetah breeding research centers on Earth and is the number one cheetah breeding facility outside of Africa & number two on Earth. Scores of students enter Wildlife Safari’s internship programs each year and an international veterinary medicine program resides on Safari grounds. Hundreds of young students are reached each year by education programs for school-aged children and some high school students even attend ecology, English and mathematics classes on site.

As a 501(c)(3) non-profit and self-funded park, your support through ticket sales, online purchases, membership, donations or volunteer assistance, help us to maintain the highest standards of animal husbandry and care. Wildlife Safari receives no tax funding but, with your help, maintains the highest standards in the zoological community through accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA)- a designation that fewer than 10% of animal parks in the country can claim.

 • Your African Safari – Coronavirus Update

Hi, Ian Proctor here at Ultimate Africa. I first visited Africa in the late 1980s. I came face to face with a wild elephant, and fell in love with being on safari! I made it my goal to create an African travel company that was all about authentic wildlife experiences. Many years later we are one of the top African travel companies in the Americas - known for arranging custom safaris to East and Southern Africa; personal trips, no cookie cutter stuff. Read More

Our team of USA based safari consultants, all of whom have lived and worked in Africa, spend 2 to 3 months of each year inspecting Africa’s top safari lodges, camps, and hotels. I have personally stayed at more than 300 of Africa’s most sought after safari properties and inspected hundreds more.

Unlike many companies who book anything and everything we are very selective. We love intimate safari properties right in amongst the animals - rooms with comfortable beds and en suite bathrooms. We prefer places that offer a good variety of activities. We do our best to avoid marginal areas, impersonal hotels, and crowds.

We offer a comprehensive travel service handling all arrangements from accommodations and air tickets to travel insurance. We regularly compare our prices with our competitors to ensure we are providing you with a great value. If you find a better price, we guarantee to beat it by US $100 per person.

Enjoy the site! If you prefer to talk about safari options call us toll free 1 800 461 0682 in Seattle. If you email us during the day we will often respond within minutes.

My wife and I just returned from our honeymoon to Tanzania and Zanzibar which as organized by Brian from Mango. Overall Brian was extremely enthusiastic, thorough, responsive and great to work with! He was patient with us as we had to delay our honeymoon for a year due to COVID and worked with us as we internally debated to delay again due to the delta variant. Mango was willing to work with us and our budget. Overall they seemed flexible in the type of trip you are looking for (high luxury or more budget) Overall, the honeymoon was a 12 our of 10! The lodges in Tanzania and the resort in Zanzibar exceeded our expectations. The service in Tanzania, the folks we worked with on the ground were all incredible. I'd highly recommend using Mango and going to Tanzania in general. It's an unbelievable country and we'd definitely go back! For our next safari, whenever that may be, I would definitely use Mango again!

Worst service I've ever had, not worth the money that I have spent on.

My wife and I booked a two week long trip starting in Capetown, through the winelands, to Victoria Falls, ending in safari at Kruger. We had a lot of hiccups along the way; transportation being late, a couple of questionable drivers, a disaster of a wine tour (the tour guide did not communicate well and at the end of the day had minimal exposure to wines), a sunset dinner cruise that we were told was scheduled but wasn't (luckily another couple had booked it so we could be added on last minute, otherwise we would have been out of luck because there would have been no crew scheduled. And honestly, it is one of my top memories from the trip!). Our hotels were amazing but we did all the research on these and just had Mango book them. We only went with one of their recommendations. Our Safaris were even more amazing, but again, we did all the research and they just booked them for us. My overall complaint is that when things went wrong, they did not seem concerned, didn't go out of their way to try to fix the problem, and didn't offer any consolation for the troubles. When we were there, we had great interactions with guides from Abercrombie and Kent. They may be a little bit more expensive but you get what you pay for and this is a trip of a lifetime; you want to walk away with nothing but wonderful memories! I would recommend A&K in a heartbeat over Mango!

10 Best African Countries for Safari

#1 Botswana

Recommended Tours:

Thus, poachers are seen as enemies of the people. As a result, Botswana has come into view as Africa's most sought-after ecotourism destination. Starting from the Chobe National Park to the Moremi Nature Reserve, you'll be able to witness numerous gems all around the country.

Back in 2014, Botswana widely banned the hunting of wild animals and implemented strict laws which are still in practice. The country resumes its zero-tolerance for poaching and their very own environmental minister, Tshekedi Khama, has even launched a shoot-to-kill policy for poachers.

Botswana, with its wildlife conservation and natural parks, is a haven for nature lovers. It is currently in the top 5, as its approach to the protection and conservation of wildlife is worth the praise. As a country, it is very forward-thinking, some may even call it aggressively forward-thinking when it comes to its preservation and anti-poaching laws.

Recommended Tours:

Its fertile land provides a safe and comforting home to around 200 mammal species. This includes elephants, hippos, monkeys and so much more. Along with 650 bird species and 5,500 plants. Most of the land in Namibia is occupied by the Kalahari and Namib Deserts. Along with that, the country also has 12 national parks and many other areas which are protected. So, if you go there for a safari, you'll have many rich areas to see and explore.

When it comes to countries with the least amount of population, Namibia is one of them. Which proves to be a good thing for nature. This is because most of the land in Namibia is still unspoiled by human filth or any sort of development, giving nature a chance to breathe.

In the country's Volcanoes National Park, you'll find 10 habituated gorilla families. Groups of 8 trekkers can visit them for one hour per day. But that's enough to get the best African safari experience. And as a nature lover, you'll enjoy the experience to the max.

If you've been around for some time, you'll be familiar with Rwanda's mountain gorillas. They were famously broadcasted and their fight for survival was shown on National Geographic . This was all thanks to the late Dian Fossey back in the 1970s who advocated for the rights of these mountain gorillas throughout her life.

Considering the tragic history surrounding the mass genocide of the people of Rwanda back in 1994, it's truly a blessing what the country has achieved in the past 25 years. There have been countless investments in infrastructure. This has resulted in the country being a very fast-growing destination for ecotourism.

#6 South Africa

But given all the advantages, it's safe to conclude that South Africa also suffers from over-tourism. I mean, if you have so many great attractions, people will flock towards it. Chances are that you'll find yourself in the middle of dozens of unruly visitors who are not too keen on obeying the rules. This occurs mostly during the peak seasons.

Annually, the country has one million visitors. Its biggest attraction is the Kruger National Park with its enrichment in biodiversity. Visitors there also have the liberty to self-drive, thus, getting a first-person private but superb experience.

For some time now, South Africa has been climbing the charts to become one of the most popular destinations for African safaris. Given its location, South Africa is a very convenient and cheap destination for people from the United States. Besides that, the country also boasts a well-developed infrastructure which makes it perfect for luxury travelers as well.

#7 Tanzania

One of the most popular locations would be the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The country is also a haven for 1100 different bird species. It's no wonder that Tanzania gets this much rep. Especially when the country boasts so many wonders.

We talked about Kenya being the top destination for Safari. Now Tanzania here takes second place in being the continent's most popular safari destination. And why shouldn't it? The country has 16 national parks and an extraordinary amount of wealth and wildlife wonders for the people to witness.

Some of its natural attractions include housing the highest mountain range in Africa. It also has the world's largest free-standing volcano and the second-largest freshwater lake. With its 30 national parks and other wildlife reserves, Uganda boasts many more sanctuaries which are worth the visit. Especially if you're a lover of nature and wildlife.

Often called "The Pearl of Africa", Uganda is certainly a great pick for an African safari. Its reputation as being one of the best ecotourism destinations comes from the country's natural attractions and wildlife.
