Juneau Whale Watching
Join us for the best show in town, a 3-3.5 hour whale watching excursion (includes transportation time and 2 hours on the water) which begins when you board a coach bus that departs downtown Juneau from the Mt. Roberts Aerial Tramway parking lot. Travel 30 minutes through the picturesque landscape of Southeast Alaska, along the Gastineau Channel, past the Mendenhall Tidelands, through the Tongass forest and arrive at Auke Bay Harbor. “All aboard!” and you’re off for the Alaska waters of the Inside Passage and the ultimate whale watching experience.
On our quest for whales, we will also be on the lookout for bald eagles, seals, sea lions, black bears and more of Alaska’s wildlife. The star of the tour is the humpback whale, but we are always looking out for the playful orcas. Once we spot a whale the captain will slow down and allow you to go on the spacious viewing decks for a great photo opportunity. Our custom design provides unrestricted viewing from inside the cabin as well. Although the cabin is enclosed and heated, we recommend you dress in layers, after all, it is Alaska!
With our experienced captains and Juneau being one of the best ports for whale watching in Alaska, this tour will be an unforgettable experience.
A light snack and refreshments will be provided.
Juneau Whale Watch & Mendenhall Glacier
This is an enthralling opportunity to witness two jewels in Juneau – the graceful elegance of humpback whales and the serene beauty of the Mendenhall Glacier. Our fleet of whale watching boats and glacier shuttles offer a seamless combination of two of Juneau’s favorite activities and our most popular tour.
Upon check in, our friendly dock representatives will put you on the right bus for a narrated 30-minute drive to your first destination.
Mendenhall Glacier is Alaska’s only drive up glacier and the #1 natural attraction in Juneau. You can choose to hike to Nugget Falls (plan 1 hour for a leisurely walk or at least 40 mins if you hurry), take the Photo Point Trail (20 round trip), look for wildlife along the Steep Creek trail, or stroll up the easy walk to the Visitor Center.
During your time on the water, you will be accompanied by a naturalist who explains the feeding habits of these magnificent creatures and identifies the many other kinds of wildlife that share these waters. Our whale watching boats are custom made to enhance your experience – a warm heated cabin with large viewing windows, and two decks to hurry to when the captain slows after spotting the whales. A bathroom is onboard. Snacks, water and binoculars are also provided.
Mendenhall Glacier Shuttle Tour
Discover Alaska’s capital city! Nestled between stunning mountain vistas and winding waterways, the modern city of Juneau is reminiscent of the old west. From the colorful port, along the picturesque Egan drive, this unique city has a surprise around every corner. Join us for a colorful narrated tour!
The crowning point of the tour is Juneau’s natural treasure, the Mendenhall Glacier. One of 38 glaciers flowing from the massive 1,500-square-mile Juneau Ice field. At this stop you can explore this glacial wonder from a variety of perspectives like Nugget Creek Falls and Photo Point Trail, which winds along Mendenhall Lake to an unobstructed view of the glacier’s face. There you can also visit the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center for an elevated view of the glacier as well as interactive geological exhibits explaining glacier formation.

Whale watching in Alaska is fun, accessible, and…exciting! Whether you want to go whale watching for orcas, humpbacks, grays, or beluga whales, most Alaska whale-watching tours are just an easy day cruise away. You can enjoy marine wildlife by whale watching from Seward in Kenai Fjords National Park .
Orcas live in coastal Alaska’s waters, including outside Seward, near Kodiak, in Whittier’s Prince William Sound, Glacier Bay , Icy Straight, and Alaska’s Inside Passage . Every spring, gray whales migrate through Alaska’s waterways to their summer feeding grounds in the Bering and Chukchi Seas in the Arctic Ocean. Belugas can be found outside Anchorage in the Turnagain Arm, and humpbacks are plentiful outside Juneau.

Wildlife Viewing Opportunities
Humpback Whales
Juneau, Alaska, is home to some of the world’s most fantastic viewing of humpback whales! Our captains and naturalists are the best in the business and have a 100% whale sighting success. The humpback whale is a baleen whale, and one of the largest members of the rorqual family. Adult females average 49 ft (15m) in length and weigh approximately 35 tons, with adult males being slightly smaller.
Killer Whales
Adult male killer whales in the North Pacific may grow to a length of approximately 27 feet (8.2 m), whereas females grow to an average length of about 23 feet (7 m). Adult males may weigh almost twice as much as females, up to 13,300 pounds (6,000 kilograms). Killer whales are predominantly black in color with large white patches under the jaw and above and behind each eye.
Coastal Wildlife
Auke Bay and Gastineau Channel provide a myriad of wildlife viewing opportunities. The Don Statter Harbor, 12 miles from downtown at the intersection of the Back Loop Road and Glacier Highway, is a good place to look for harbor seals and bald eagles, with sea lions frequenting the area. The harbor is the departure point for many whale watching cruises. Harbor porpoise and other marine mammals and sea birds are frequently seen on trips to and from Auke Bay.

About Juneau Whale Watching Tours
Faqs about whale watching in juneau, can i see whales in juneau.
Juneau is the best place for whale watching in Alaska. Seeing whales on your tour is 100% guaranteed. The nutrient-rich waters in Favorite Channel and Saginaw Channel in Juneau are among the best places to see humpback whales in the entire world. Our top excursion is the Juneau whale watching tour .
What are the best whale watching tours?
The best whale watching tours in Juneau are:
- Whale Watching & Mendenhall Glacier Tour
- Juneau Whale Watching Adventure
- Whale Watching & Mendenhall Glacier Private Charter
- Juneau Whale Watching Adventure Private Charter
- Juneau Whale Watching & Salmon Bake (not available for 2022)
When is the best time to see whales in Juneau?
You can see whales in Juneau from April to November, but the best time for whale watching is June through August. In Late July, you begin to see Bubble Net Feeding, when 10-12 whales jump out of the water at once.
What types of whales will I see?
Juneau is a feeding ground for humpback whales, and there are so many whales that we are able to offer 100% guaranteed sightings. The waterways attract the whales all summer long, before they make the long journey to the warming waters of Mexico and Hawaii to breed. There is also an opportunity to see Orca, commonly called Killer Whales, on these tours as well. Orca sightings are very rare as they are very transient and move quickly through the waterways in Southeast Alaska.
Why should I choose Juneau for whale watching?
One benefit of whale watching in Juneau is that the area has abundant wildlife and the landscape can include views of glaciers (including Mendenhall Glacier) and lighthouses depending on the exact location of the whales. Whale sightings are guaranteed here.
Where else can I view whales on my Alaska cruise?
You can also whale watch in Icy Strait Point, where seeing whales is also guaranteed.
Reviews for our Juneau Whale Watching Tours
Here's what customers had to say about our Juneau whale watching tours.
Juneau Whale Watching Tour:
“Awesome Awesome tour!! We ended up getting to see humpback whales and Orcas! The tour guide did a great job of finding the best spots to observe the whales. Our tour guide even was able to find a spot near the shore where we watched a mother Orca teaching her baby Orca how to lunge feed, which was an amazing experience! We learned so much about whales and saw so many types of ocean life. We also saw sea lions basking in the sun on a bouy in the ocean. Don't miss this great tour!” Ashley
Mendenhall Glacier Whale Watching Tour:
“WOW!!! A first class operation from start to finish and worth every penny! The time at the Mendenhall Glacier was great but the whale watching was amazing! The crew--Mark, Steph and Taylor were incredible! They love their job and it shows! To hear their excitement with each whale appearance made us know that we had chosen the best tour available. I wish I could give them 10 stars because they deserve it! If I ever get the opportunity to get back to Juneau, I will definitely sign up for another tour.” Pam
Whale Watching & Mendenhall Glacier Private Charter :
“Perfect!! We had a large group cruising together. The price per person for this private tour was only a few dollars more than the cruise ship tour (which packs people onto a boat). It was definitely worth it! It was everyone s favorite activity during our entire Alaska trip!” Rodeny
Whale Watching, Mendenhall Glacier, & Salmon Bake Tour:
“This was a fabulous excursion for a day in Juneau. We booked independently (and saved significantly from those who booked directly from my cruise line) and felt like we saw all the best of Juneau. The Whale Watching boat was incredible--we saw so many whales and the captain and naturalist were friendly and informative. The glacier was beautiful, and we had time to hike down to the big waterfall beside the glacier. The salmon bake was a good meal, and the kids (ages 5-11) had a great time spying the salmon swimming in the lake, panning for gold, and roasting marshmallows over a campfire. I highly recommend this one!” Jessica
Whale Watching & Salmon Bake Tour:
“We had a great time and saw lots of whales and some great views of glaciers in the distance. Our guides on the whale watching part were fantastic and very knowledgeable. The bus drivers were great too! The salmon bake was delicious and it was nice to walk around the grounds to see the waterfall. Thanks!” Jana

This small-group adventure starts with a deep dive into the world of salmon fishing, where you can see the famous salmon ladder in action.
Next, explore the Saxman Native Village, home to the world’s largest collection of traditional totem poles, which will give you a glimpse into the area’s rich Indigenous heritage.
The tour continues with whale-watching at Rotary Beach, where you might also spot seals, eagles, and even bears at Herring Cove.

For a peaceful escape from your hectic city life, the Orca Cove kayaking tour is an ideal choice.
This activity involves gliding through the coves of Ketchikan, paddling around the rainforest islands, and taking in the area’s serene beauty.
While enjoying this magical moment, you will be served a delicious smoked salmon snack.
On the other hand, if you’re more curious about Alaska’s vibrant marine life, then opt for the Ketchikan kayak eco-tour , which is an immersive and educational journey.

This tour brings in the thrill of spotting Alaska’s majestic bald eagles, black bears, and other wildlife with a deep dive into the rich cultural heritage of the Haida and Tlingit peoples.
Haida are the Native American tribes who have made their dynasty at Ketchikan along with the Tinglits.
You’ll visit the Totem Heritage Center to learn the fascinating history behind traditional totem poles, and your Haida guide will share legends and insights that bring the culture to life.
You’ll also witness the famous salmon ladder and explore scenic spots like Rainbow Falls and Herring Cove, where you might glimpse bears fishing for salmon.

And for those who want to focus on the thrill of catching halibut, the Ketchikan halibut fishing shore excursion ensures you’ll have plenty of time to reel in halibut, cod, and rockfish.
If you are looking for a tour that only takes you to a whale-watching experience, then opt for the Ketchikan’s whale-watching tour ticket .

You can choose to hike to Nugget Falls (plan 1 hour for a leisurely walk or 40 mins if you hurry), take the Photo Point Trail (20 round trip), look for wildlife along the Steep Creek trail, or stroll up the easy walk to the Visitor Center.

The Tongass National Forest, the 2nd biggest rainforest in the world and the largest forest in North America is the backdrop for all tours in Juneau. Extending from Ketchikan in the South to Skagway in the North, the Tongass surrounds Juneau with millions of acres of Sitka Spruce, Red and Yellow Cedar, and Hemlock trees. The gray whales of San Ignacio Lagoon are famously curious and friendly, often gliding gently alongside whale watching skiffs.
Though over 10 species of whales visit Baja California each year, making it one of the best regions in the world for whale watching , Baja is perhaps most famous for whale watching in San Ignacio lagoon , where a unique clan of gray whales regularly enjoy socializing with humans—a phenomenon only known to occur in three quiet coves on the Pacific coast of Baja. Their outgoing and ‘friendly’ behavior is especially remarkable when you consider that just a century ago they were hunted to near extinction in these very same lagoons.
Overcoming a Dark History
Each year, more than 3,000 Pacific gray whales embark on one of the longest known migrations made by a mammal: they swim over 12,000 miles from their Arctic feeding grounds off the coast of Alaska down to the quiet coves tucked on the Pacific coast of Baja California. Here, they mate, give birth, and nurse their calves in the buoyant and shallow waters – an ideal environment to build strength for the journey back north.
During this time, many of the gray whale moms will bring their newborn calves to brush alongside whale watching skiffs . They’re known to float gently alongside whale watchers, lift their heads above water, and to seemingly ask passengers to stroke their bodies – an experience that often brings people to tears and fuels a profound sense of connection.

This is the only region in the world where gray whales are known to be so friendly, a behavior that baffles marine biologists . The tendency is seemingly cultural, and has become a ritual passed down from mothers to their calves, down through the generations.
What makes this phenomenon most surprising is that not only are gray whales famously protective of their young—leading whalers to deem them “devil fish”—but also that people had previously hunted gray whales to near-extinction. Before international bans on whaling were implemented in the 1940s, San Ignacio lagoon was not a safe-haven for whale watching, but rather a butchery.
But that relationship is a far cry from the gentle friendship the gray whales of Baja California now enjoy with humans, where in some cases they are even thought to ’ask’ humans to groom them .
Today, gray whales are protected by international and national laws that are strictly enforced by the Mexican government. Their population has rebounded to pre-whaling levels, a rare success story for a species that was on the brink of extinction.
Responsible Tourism Can Support Healthy Oceans
Stories like those of the gray whales of San Ignacio Lagoon—in which a community’s relationship with the ocean was transformed from wildlife extraction to wildlife tourism—highlight the purpose of Oceanic Society’s expeditions program: to create life-changing adventures that are meaningful for travelers and good for the ocean . Tourism, when done ethically, has the power to deepen our sense of connection to the environment, motivate behavior changes that support conservation, and reshape economies to support vulnerable ecosystems rather than plunder them.
The economy of Baja California today is a far cry from depending on whale blubber. Whale watching in Baja California is now considered one of the top wildlife experiences in the world, and it brings a sustainable source of foreign revenue and seasonal local employment to an area with otherwise limited options. Since 1993, San Ignacio Lagoon has been part of the largest nature reserve in Latin America, El Vizcaino Biosphere , a UNESCO World Heritage site, and is a model championed by environmental scientists . Whale watchers and tour operators throughout the gray whale migration pathway, from California to Alaska, also benefit from Mexico’s efforts to conserve gray whales and protect their habitat.
Beyond reshaping economies, protecting gray whales helps preserve the health of ocean ecosystems. Gray whales feed off the bottom of the ocean, and their feces naturally spread nutrients across the surface, supporting the growth of phytoplankton : the bedrock of the marine food chain. Without abundant phytoplankton, much of ocean life would suffer.
Gray whales are sensitive creatures, and though they often seek out human connection in the lagoons of Baja, such interactions must be on their terms. Mexican regulations mean that only licensed boats are allowed into the nursing grounds of San Ignacio Lagoon or Ojo de Liebre. Tour operators must not chase gray whales to not disrupt their important nursing time before they embark on the long journey back to the Arctic, when every bit of energy will be required. If an operator is caught ignoring the rules, they can lose their license.
Oceanic Society has led sustainable and ethical whale watching trips to San Ignacio Lagoon (and the nearby Sea of Cortez) for more than 50 years. When you travel with Oceanic Society, you help provide communities an alternative income to resource extraction, changing the economic landscape for generations and protecting species that are essential to the ecosystem.
Additionally, by simply signing up, each traveler directly sponsors the removal of 200 pounds of ocean plastic pollution and supports our ocean conservation mission .
