Connecting rooms ("family cabins") are located on decks 1, 2, 6, 9, 10 and 11. The list of connecting cabins grades includes 2 beds (PT, 4E, 4G), 2-4 beds (6J, 8S), 2-3-4 beds (6A, 6B, 6C, 8T), 3-4 beds (6D), and 4 beds (4J). Handicap staterooms (32 total) include Balcony (5), Oceanview (8), Interior (18) and Small Interior (1).

Follows the review of Carnival Sunshine staterooms as amenities, furniture, and complimentary services:

Each of the two Captain’s Suites has master bedroom (2 twin beds convertible to king, Pullman bed), dressing area (vanity, large walk-in closet), large bathroom, separate living room (double sofa bed, coffee table, desk, 2 armchairs), separate bathroom (shower), fridge and mini-bar.

Carnival Sunshine Suites (Grand, Cloud 9 Spa, Ocean) have 2 twin beds (convertible to king), dressing area (walk-in closet, vanity table, chair), private bathroom (WC, shower/whirlpool bathtub, bidet, double sinks). Some GS-OS suites have a single/double sofa bed for 3rd/4th person. All balcony accommodations feature a private balcony with sliding glass doors (table, patio chairs, rail with clear glass panel).

All Carnival Cloud 9 Spa cabins have exclusive access to the Spa facilities on Spa Deck 10. Their grades are Spa Suite (SS), Spa Balcony (8S, 8T), and Spa Inside (4S). Carnival Cloud 9 Spa rooms have the following complimentary amenities, services and perks (applicable for two guests per stateroom only): Thermal Suite (complimentary, unlimited access), 2 fitness classes (complimentary, Yoga or Pilates), 2 metabolism tests (complimentary), 1 Scrub Kit (complimentary, for the Thermal Suite), bathrobes, slippers, deluxe in-room bath amenities (by Elemis – shampoo, conditioner, sharp shower gel, vitamin-rich body lotion, 1 hand and 1 body soap disks), priority Spa reservations (must be made by 6 pm on embarkation day). Passengers booked in Cloud 9 Spa cabins also enjoy Spa treatment discounts while the ship is docked in ports of call – 20% off (1st), 30% off (2nd) and 40% off (3rd treatment).

Premium Vista Balcony cabins are located around the ship’s corners (category 9C-aft have a wrap-around balcony).

Scenic Oceanview cabins location is on Lido Deck 9, and feature floor-ceiling windows, separate sitting area (vanity desk, coffee table), twin beds (convertible), sofa bed, upper Pullman bed.  Oceanview cabins have a picture window and twin beds don’t convert to king when both upper beds are in use. Some ocean view staterooms have a sofa and/or upper beds (Pullman) for 3rd/4th person.

Inside cabins with windows have either Porthole Window (PT, decks 1 and 2) or Picture Window (6B category rooms 2128-2129 are with obstructed view). Some Interior staterooms have a sofa and/or upper bed (Pullman) for 3rd/4th person.  Small Inside cabins have bunk beds (upper/lower Pullman beds), living area (vanity, chair), bathroom (shower).

All Carnival Sunshine  staterooms offer as standard/complimentary amenities a living area (vanity, seating), smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand-movies, bookings-reservations, Room Service ordering), direct-dial phone, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), hairdryer, en-suite bathroom (WC-toilet, shower, single sink-vanity, bathrobes, bathroom amenity basket/replenished upon request), custom-made beds (Carnival Comfort Bed System), beach towels, mini-bar/fridge, individual air-conditioning, complimentary 24-hour room service. Bibles (Gideon version) are provided upon request.

Carnival’s Sail & Sign cards (cashless onboard credit accounts) double as stateroom keys. S&S credit program allows charges on purchases and tips/gratuities directly to a personal account throughout the Carnival cruise. The card has a designated owner and must be utilized for all money transactions on the ship as cash is accepted as a form of payment only at the casino. These cards are provided to all passengers (incl minors) immediately upon boarding the ship. Balance updates are provided at Guest Services desk (at any time). They can also be checked via the smart TV in each stateroom.

Ship’s interactive TV system allows passengers to purchase movies on demand, to order room service and to check the Sail & Sign account’s status. The on-demand movie list has approx 25 films available for ordering at USD 5 per movie. Adult-content films cost USD 10 per movie. Depending on satellite reception (ship's location at sea), the complimentary in-cabin TV programming includes the following channels: ABC, CBS, FOX, NBC, CNN (Domestic, International, Espanol), TCM (classic movies), cartoons (Boomerang, CN), TNT, TBS. There are 2 complimentary movie channels showing a film every 3 hours (both starting at 12 noon). One shows all-time favorites (PG -13 rated) and the other shows all-time family favorites (G / PG-rated). The following TV channels are Carnival-themed and also complimentary: Fun Finds TV, Cruise Director, Fun Aboard, Park West Art, Shore Tours, Ship Position, live cam views (webcams positioned forward and on lido deck), Audible Funtimes, Photo, Music. Sporting events (ESPN, ESPN 2) are shown only on big screens – at the ship’s Sports Bar and Seaside Theatre (not in cabins/suites). All the TV’s connection ports are intentionally disabled, which makes it impossible to connect it with personal devices (cameras, DVDs, USBs, iPods, gaming consoles, etc).

Bathroom amenities vary each time, so it’s advisable you bring your own. Samples may include toothpaste, mouthwash, dental floss, body lotion, razor, antiacids. There is a wall-mounted dispenser in the shower stall (for liquid soap and shampoo).  Electric power outlets are located in the desk/vanity area – one 110 V outlet (3-pronged, USA grounded) and one 220 V outlet (European standard). The bathroom’s 2-pin plug can be used only for electric razors.

The new cabin beds are Europe-manufactured exclusively for Carnival. The ensemble includes custom pillows (trademarked “New Generation Pillows”, 100% cotton), duvet (100% hypoallergenic, ultra-fine, satin-striped), cover, deluxe sheets (high-quality cotton), pillowcases (ultra-fine, satin-striped), 8-inch / 20 cm spring mattresses (trademarked “Carnival Comfort”). Alternative (non-allergenic) bedding is also available. It includes 100% polyester blankets, sheets and pillowcases (60/40 cotton-polyester) and New Generation Pillows (100% cotton). Note: Trundle beds don’t have Carnival Comfort mattresses.

Carnival-logoed Beach Towels are provided in each cruise accommodation for passengers to take ashore. Beach towels are also available for purchase (at $22). Bathrobes (2) are provided in all cruise suites and also in “Cloud 9 Spa” cabins/suites. Additional bathrobes are provided upon request. For all other cruise accommodations, bathrobes are provided (upon request) during the turndown service on the first evening. Bathrobes can be purchased at $49 (adult size) and $24 (children sizes /2-4 yo and 6-8 yo).

Life jackets are used in cases of emergency only (not at the ship pools). Lifejackets are located within passenger/crew cabins (in the closet). They are available in 3 sizes – adult, child, and infant.  Each of the cabins has a safe (located in the closet) with approx dimensions (inches/centimeters) – width (10/25), height (9/23) and depth (8/20). Cabin safes can be accessed by any magnetic strip card. It is advisable not to use a valid credit card (or driver’s license), but an old expired card (or some rewards card) instead. Some safes are with a keypad (personal code). Safes can be opened also by the ship’s security.

All cabin and suite mini-bars are stocked with premium liquors ($6-9,25), beer ($6,25), energy drinks ($5), soft soda/beverages ($2), bottled water ($3,75).  In-cabin babysitting is not available (read more at Camp Ocean below). Cribs in cruise cabins are provided complimentary (upon request). In Main Dining Rooms are provided complimentary high chairs and booster seats.

Laundry facilities are at extra-charge – $3,25 (per washer or dryer load) and $1,5 per box (detergent/water softener, dispensed from the vending machine in the room). Launderettes (open between 6:30 am – 12 midnight) are located on all cabin decks. Each laundry room is equipped with 2-3 washers, 2-3 dryers, 1 ironing board/iron. All laundry machines are coinless (can be operated using S&S cards only). While the ship is in port, washing machines are closed (only dryers and irons can be used). Valet laundry service is handled through the cabin steward. Prices are per item – wash-and-press ($2 – $7,50) and dry-cleaning ($3 – $10,50).

Smoking in cabins/suites and on their balconies is prohibited. On Carnival Sunshine, smoking allowed areas (cigarettes /incl electronic cigarettes) are the Casino (designated areas) and Casino Bar. Smoking (incl of cigars and tobacco pipes) is allowed on designated outdoor areas on Deck 3 portside (forward-midship-aft) and on Deck 10 starboard and port side (near Seaside Theatre /forward pool area).

Funville@Sea is free of charge Intranet service providing information on onboard activities and events schedule, bar and restaurant menus, deck maps, Fun Times (newspaper), FunAshore (tour guides), Carnival cruise news, itinerary-related weather reports, onboard social network (tracking/messaging other passengers). The complimentary service is available via the Infotainment system (in all cabins) and also at the FunHub stations around the ship.

Current Carnival Sunshine gratuities (per day per person) are USD 12,95 (standard cabins) and USD 13,95 (suites). The list of suite perks includes priority embarkation/debarkation/tendering (all ports), priority main dining room reservations, complimentary bottled water in cabins, a complimentary bag of laundry (one per cruise), enhanced turndown service.

Since 2017, Carnival Cruise Line allows ship passengers to customize their steward service by choosing to have the cabin serviced in the morning, at night or both (twice a day). All guests can choose from a list of additional cabin amenities, among which are bathrobes, extra pillows, blankets, closet hangers. All guests can also specify how often the bed linens to be changed during the cruise. Your personal preferences can be selected from a services menu card left in each of the ship’s staterooms. By default, if you make no selections on the card, your room service steward will service the accommodation twice daily.

Carnival cruise pizza: Pizza Pirate, Pizzeria del Capitano and more

Ashley Kosciolek

If someone asked me to pick an ideal food, I'd almost certainly go with pizza. It's tasty, portable and easy to prepare, and just about everyone likes it. That's why it's unsurprising that it's one of the most popular foods on cruise ships.

Carnival Cruise Line is known for having some of the best pizza at sea . In fact, it's so good I find myself enjoying a slice or two almost daily when I sail. Here's a guide to where you can find it, what's on the menu and how much a pie will cost you.

For more cruise news, guides and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

What are the names of the pizza places on Carnival ships?

carnival cruise sunshine suites

Carnival offers nearly round-the-clock pizza on every one of its vessels, so you're never far from cheesy goodness when you're on board.

Almost all ships — 25 of the 27 in the fleet — have either Pizza Pirate or Pizzeria del Capitano. The other two vessels, which are part of the line's new Excel Class , have something similar but with a different name: Miami Slice on Carnival Celebration and Coastal Slice on Carnival Jubilee .

The one thing they all have in common is that you can order either by the pie or by the slice, and you won't pay an extra cent. The pizzerias are also all set up as walk-up counters. Be warned: The pizzas are so good there's likely to be a line more often than not.

Carnival cruise pizza menus

carnival cruise sunshine suites

Each of Carnival's pizza outposts features a selection of five pizza types, three of which are core options that appear on all menus across the fleet and two of which can change from ship to ship.

Note: Menus were accurate at the time of publication but are subject to change without notice.

Pizza Pirate menu

On the Pizza Pirate menu, Carnival offers five different types of pies:

  • Margherita: Tomato sauce, basil and fresh mozzarella
  • Pepperoni: Tomato sauce, pepperoni and fresh mozzarella
  • Quattro Formaggi: Gorgonzola, provolone, Parmesan and fresh mozzarella cheeses with roasted garlic
  • Funghi: Tomato sauce, mushrooms and fresh mozzarella
  • Prosciutto: Roasted garlic, rucola, prosciutto and fresh mozzarella

Pizzeria del Capitano menu

The menu at Pizzeria del Capitano includes the same five options as the one at Pizza Pirate:

Miami Slice menu

Miami Slice's menu offers the three staple types, plus two that you can only find on Carnival Celebration:

  • La Habana: Ham and chorizo with gouda, mozzarella and manchego cheeses
  • Picadillo: Ground beef and sazon with gouda and mozzarella cheeses

Coastal Slice menu

Coastal Slice features the three core varieties, as well as two different selections that you can only find on Carnival Jubilee:

  • Margherita: Tomato sauce, basil and mozzarella
  • Pepperoni: Tomato sauce, pepperoni and mozzarella
  • Quattro Formaggi: Gorgonzola, provolone, Parmesan and mozzarella cheeses with roasted garlic
  • Barbecue chicken: Barbecue chicken with alfredo sauce, red onion, scallions, and mozzarella and gouda cheeses

How to Choose a Room: Ultimate Guide to Carnival Staterooms

By Carnival Cruise Line

Before you book your cruise , you will want to know which stateroom you should call your own. Getting familiar with the types of staterooms helps you choose the sleeping space that offers you the most comfort based on your personal preferences and personality. It could also depend on whether you’re cruising solo, plus-one, with the family or as a group.

So how do you select the best stateroom to ensure you’ll have a relaxing, comfortable cruise? We’ll help you put it all together with the following suggestions.

Know the Stateroom Styles

When you’re on a Carnival cruise, you have your choice of stateroom styles and locations designated as Interior, Ocean View, Balcony or Suite.

  • Interior staterooms : The most affordable cruise ship rooms ideal for sensitive sleepers who prefer quieter rooms away from activities, making it the perfect spot to curl up after a long day of fun
  • Ocean View staterooms : Designed for gazing out at vistas and ocean views. It’s the best place on board to be the first to spot ports of call
  • Balcony staterooms : Ideal for enjoying sea breezes and stunning views on a patio with private seating all day
  • Suite staterooms: The best rooms on a cruise ship for stretching out and putting up your feet in a space with all the comforts of home, and then some
  • Specialty staterooms : Thematic settings that revolve around family, couples and more and are available as interior, ocean view, balcony or suite staterooms

If You’re Cruising Solo

When you’re solo, there’s no having to answer to anyone about where to go or what to do. You can cruise to Belize and explore the Xunantunich Mayan Ruins to fully release your enthusiasm for ancient history. Learn to cook like a chef onboard while meeting new friends. Another perk: having a stateroom all to yourself. Consider these ideas when booking a stateroom of your own.

  • Havana: Solo cruisers who also want to be social may like Havana staterooms with private access to the tropical Havana pool and bar area .
  • Cloud 9 Spa : If you’re cruising for more of a pampering experience for one, consider a specialty Cloud 9 Spa stateroom. You’ll be right next to the most relaxing place onboard, the Cloud 9 Spa ™ .
  • Interior and Ocean View : Choose an interior stateroom for the most quiet or an ocean view stateroom for contemplative views to complement your meditative state of mind.
  • Aft: Consider staying in the aft part of the ship where you’ll be nearest to casual dining.
  • Lower deck: The lower deck is the best deck on a cruise ship if you want to be one of the first off the ship, exploring all the fun at each port of call .

If You’re Cruising as a Couple

Couples who cruise together stay together, especially when choosing the perfect style stateroom. The perfect getaway means you’ll sail to dreamy ports. What couple wouldn’t enjoy a cruise to Mexico for a VIP Wine Tasting or to Aruba for a Jeep Safari ?

On board, dine in a romantic, floating Italian trattoria . Afterward, slip away to an enchanting stateroom reserved for just the two of you.

  • Cloud 9 Spa: Whisk away to the Cloud 9 Spa adjacent to specialty Cloud 9 Spa staterooms with relaxing decor. You’ll get priority spa reservations along with complimentary spa-inspired gifts to use throughout the cruise.
  • Balcony: Balcony staterooms are designed with couples in mind. You’ll be able to step onto your own little outdoor oasis at sunset for cocktails or sunrise for coffee in your robes.
  • Forward: If you’re seeking relaxation, consider a stateroom in the forward section of the ship. You’ll be close to the fitness center, spa and the show lounge for performances.

If You’re Cruising With Family

Whether you’re cruising as a single parent or times two with kids in tow, you’ll effortlessly pack in more fun activities and bonding time than you ever thought possible on vacation. No matter what age your kids, there’s plenty of onboard entertainment that lets your family interact with favorite childhood characters and games.

Shore excursions with no minimum age limits let you customize experiences for the entire family to enjoy, such as cruising to Alaska and going on a Dog Sled Discovery and Mushing Camp adventure. After a day, and night of fun and kid-friendly dining, head back to a comfy stateroom that suits your family .

  • Family Harbor: Family Harbor specialty staterooms with whimsical nautical decor have exclusive access to the Family Harbor lounge featuring breakfast, snacks, board games, family movies, video games and more. Kids eat free at Family Harbor restaurants. Plus, kids and parents will love the experience because they have one free evening of Night Owls ® babysitting service at Camp Ocean ™ .
  • Family-Friendly: Designed with families in mind, these staterooms accommodate up to five people and thankfully come with an extra bathroom. Great for groups too, thanks to connecting doors.
  • Upper deck: Consider a stateroom on the upper deck of your ship. You’ll be closest to the entertainment, fun and outdoor deck areas.
  • Midship : You’ll be right near the pool or waterslide areas, a kid’s dream.

If You’re Cruising With a Group

From an old college friend gathering to a ladies-only birthday bash or golfing buddy getaway, cruise ships are the perfect place for group vacations. Whether you have 10 or 20 people in your group, there’s something to do and see even if everyone differs in age, abilities and interests.

Cruise to Bermuda for an extended family reunion and reserve differing shore excursions ranging from the Famous Homes and Hideaway Cruise tour for architecture buffs to Segway Adventures for teens and a Glass Bottom Boat tour for little kids. Book staterooms extra early for groups, ask for connecting rooms and consider these stateroom styles.

If you have health or mobility challenges, Carnival proudly welcomes you on board. You’ll find plenty of accessible staterooms from which to choose, whether you are traveling with a wheelchair, scooter or another device. Consider staying in the midship section where you’ll find extra elevators.

friends handing out at the on board pool during their cruise vacation

Every stateroom has amenities (including your dedicated room steward) that rival land-locked five-star hotels. Expect soft, cozy linens, in-room safes, plenty of storage space, television, climate control and even bathrobes upon request.

Keep in mind that some staterooms and features are exclusive to specific ships, so be sure to check out the amenities on board the ship you choose. You’ll sleep well knowing you’ve chosen the right spot for snoozing while cruising.

Note: Onboard activities, shore excursions, and dining options may vary by  ship  and destination.

Anyone lucky enough to be going to Honolulu doesn't have to give a reason for going. They can just say, "We're going to Honolulu," and imagination will take care of the rest. Moreover, Honolulu can probably live up to and even surpass whatever we imagine. World-famous beaches and tropical weather set the scene for an amazing mix of Pacific cultures in this Hawaiian capital. There is a reason why Hawaii is consistently rated as one of the nation's top travel destinations; in fact, there are several of them. Waikiki Beach is the center of activity for Hawaii's biggest industry: tourism. This is one of the world's greatest resort playgrounds, featuring some of the most beautiful beaches and hotels in the world. Visitors from all over the world flock here to enjoy the sun, the sand and the incredible nightlife. Besides the beaches, visitors to Honolulu can take tours of the countryside surrounding the downtown area. These tours are amazing, bringing visitors to some of the most beautiful rainforests and volcanoes in the world. Animal and plant life are abundant, and the scenery is unsurpassed. A five-minute car ride from Honolulu brings visitors into some of Nature's most beautiful and awe-inspiring sights. Several museums, including the Bishop Museum, combine exhibits on Hawaiian natural history with lessons about history and culture of its many diverse peoples. The Waikiki Aquarium is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States, and it features many of Hawaii's most interesting sea animals. The Honolulu Zoo also features some of the unique mammals, birds, and reptiles that inhabit the forests just outside of the city. The history of Hawaii is very rich, as the islands have always attracted many different people. Visitors can tour the Iolani Palace, the residence of the last of the Hawaiian monarchs. They can also visit Honolulu's Chinatown, which is more authentic than many of its mainland counterparts. They can also visit the Arizona Memorial, commemorating the destruction of the battleship Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought America into World War II. Honolulu exhibits the best of Hawaii in every way. From its famous beaches to its incredible natural preserves, this town has attracted millions of people from around the world. Many of those visitors stayed, helping to make Hawaii one of the most cosmopolitan and diverse places to visit in the United States. Anyone lucky enough to be going to Hawaii knows that he won't be disappointed.

Kahului is located in Maui County on the west side of the island of Maui between Wailuku and Lower Paia along Highway 32 near the West Maui Forest Reserve and the Pacific Ocean.Kahului is heart of Maui, and the only deep water port for the island. This is where the major cruise and container ships come in, the main airport, Kahului Airport is located here also. Kahului has great variety in shopping and services, but lacks the variety of fine restaurants that Lahaina has, although some of the local dining favorites reside here. There are few hotels and resorts in Kahului, there is however, a new golf course. There are four major shopping malls with the largest being the Kaahumanu Mall. Most of 'industrial' Maui is located in Kahului. It is here where one of the main power plants is located, most of Maui's service oriented businesses, and the greatest variety in shopping. Everything from small local stores, catering to residents, to large discount stores such as K-Mart and Costco. Kahului has grown a lot in the past few years, unfortunately the infrastructure has not. As a result traffic is congested most of the working day. The traffic can be especially heavy while exiting the Kahului Airport area. Rush hour traffic is especially bad, both in the afternoons and evenings, traffic from Paia and Upcountry bottleneck at the intersection of Dairy Road and Hana Highway. Allow a little extra time for travelling through this area of Maui.

Nawiliwili is located on the southeastern coast of the island of Kauai between Lihue and Nawiliwili Bay along Highway 51 near Ninini Point and the Huleia Stream.Kaua'i is divided into five major districts, or moku 'aina. Nawiliwili Bay is located in the moku 'aina of Puna on the southeastern coast. One meaning of puna is spring, and Puna has an abundance of springs and streams caused by its location on the windward side of the island. Around 1000 A.D., settlers from the Marquesas arrived, led by Punanuikaia'aina. He succeeded in creating a chiefdom independent of Kona in Puna.

The Polynesians arrived in the Hilo area about 1100 A.C. They eventually inhabited the shores of Hilo Bay, farmed their crops, fished and traded their goods along the Wailuku River.  In the late 1700’s, the days of King Kamehameha’s rule, Hilo was the center of political activity and social growth. It was the prime place for the King to build his army of ships designed for conquering the Hawaiian Islands. By 1791 native Hawaiians had traveled as far as the United States and China. The King befriended many of the foreigners who traveled to the islands. With such considerable traveling, the Hawaiian way of life soon became influenced by products ranging from iron to livestock to non-native seeds.    Hilo became a stopping place for explorers, whaling ships, traders and those curious about active volcanoes. By the 1900’s, Hilo had grown into a commercial center. The sugar industry was booming, a number of wharves had been constructed, the breakwater was begun and a new railroad connected Hilo with other parts of the island. Then in 1946 – and again in 1960 – two destructive tsunamis swept Hilo’s Bayfront causing the relocation of Hilo’s government and commercial life. When the town was rebuilt, a large park and roadway were situated between the buildings and the shoreline to absorb future tidal waves.   Besides being a rare surviving example of an Hawaiian plantation town, cultural diversity is one of Hilo’s special charms. The local term, “mixed plate”, describes well the impact made by Polynesians, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Koreans, other Pacific Islanders and Europeans on Hilo’s mixed-race culture of today. All these ethnic groups blend in the faces of the people who give Hilo its charm. Its diverse shopping opportunities, its small scale and its friendliness makes Hilo the perfect town in which to linger just a little longer.

Hey, there's more to this town than it just being the finish line for the annual Newport-Ensenada Race! The City of Ensenada has completed a total renovation of Primera, the main street downtown. Enjoy a stroll down the cobblestone sidewalk complete with outdoor cafes, interesting shops, strolling musicians and street vendors. The malecon (harbor boardwalk) renovation was completed last year and provides a beautifully landscaped walk along the harbor front to the Ventana Del Mar Plaza with its huge Mexican flag. From there, you can look across the rio at the new small craft harbor nestled in the middle of the new cruise ship docks. It will be interesting to watch the progress on this new endeavor. The story is that in order to expand the cargo port on the north side of the harbor, the developers had to relocate the passenger ships' dock and provide some type of recreational asset for the city. It looks to be a good solution. Ensenada is also a swell place to take possession of your new boat (more on that later), get a new bottom job for your old boat or set as your destination for an extended coastal cruise, a fun weekend road trip or the start of some long distance cruising! The people of Ensenada are trying hard to improve their city, both for turistas, a big part of their income and for themselves and their families. We have seen improvements which are good, and yet some loss of the "Mexico-ness" in some of the tourist areas. We have met a lot of the residents and business people and want to thank them for their hospitality. As visitors, it is our obligation to live up to the Bienvenidos and the Mi Casa es Su Casa that have been extended to us.

History of Perm

Foundation of perm.

The territory of Perm has been inhabited by people since ancient times. More than 130 archaeological sites, from the Stone Age to the late Middle Ages, have been studied here. About 17 thousand years ago, there was a Paleolithic site in the center of today’s Perm. During the excavations, several thousand different stone tools were found. The inhabitants of the site were hunting reindeer and horses.

In the 17th century, these lands belonged to the Stroganovs family, famous Russian merchants. The first written mentions of a settlement on the territory of the historical center of Perm (the village of Yegoshikha) date back to 1647.

In 1720, by order of Emperor Peter I, Vasily Tatishchev, the managing director of the Ural state-owned factories, a famous Russian historian and geographer, went to Siberia Governorate to build factories for smelting copper and silver. He chose a place near the village of Yegoshikha for the construction of a copper smelter because of the presence of copper ore and a river for the transportation of goods.

In 1723, the construction of the Yegoshikhinsky copper-smelting plant began, which became the moment when Perm was founded. In 1736, the Motovilikhinsky copper-smelting plant was founded about 4 km from the Yegoshikhinsky plant upstream of the Kama River.

More Historical Facts…

In 1759, the village near the Yegoshikhinsky plant was destroyed by fire, only the church and several houses around it survived. In 1764, instead of the wooden church, a stone one was built - the Peter and Paul Cathedral - the first stone (brick) building in Perm. This building has survived to this day.

In 1780, Empress Catherine II signed a decree on the creation of a town named Perm on the basis of the Yegoshikhinsky plant, which became the center of Perm Governorate. In 1783, the coat of arms of Perm was approved with the following description: “In a red field there is a silver bear, on which the Gospel is placed in a gold frame, above it there is a silver cross, meaning the savagery of the indigenous people and enlightenment through the adoption of the Christian law”. Today’s coat of arms of Perm is the same.

In 1788, the Yegoshikhinsky plant was closed due to the depletion of deposits. Copper production continued at the Motovilikhinsky copper smelter. Perm began to develop as an administrative, trade, transport, and cultural center of the Urals.

Perm in the 19th - early 20th centuries

In 1840, British geologist Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, studying vast outcrops of geological strata in the vicinity of Perm, discovered the Perm geological period named after this town. In 1842, a fire broke out in Perm, in which the entire central part of the town (about 300 houses) was destroyed. In 1863, due to the depletion of copper ore, the Motovilikhinsky plant was also closed. In the same year, the Perm cannon plants were laid downstream of the Kama.

In 1868, a population census was carried out in Perm and its environs. The residents turned out to be: 11,381 men and 8,175 women in Perm, a total of 19,556 people; in the Motovilikhinsky plant there were 4,399 men and 4,321 women, a total of 8,720 people. In Perm, there were 14 churches, up to 40 stone and 2,900 wooden houses, 353 shops.

The end of the 19th century became a period of active railway construction in Perm. In 1878, the Perm - Yekaterinburg line was commissioned. In 1897-1898, the Ural railway was connected to the railway network of European Russia. Institutions of art and culture were actively developing in Perm too. In 1874, the construction of the opera and ballet theater began. In 1896, the first movie theater was opened (the electro-theater “Illusion”).

At the beginning of the 20th century, the population of Perm, together with Motovilikha, was about 100 thousand people. In 1902, the first city power plant was opened.

In 1909, Perm was visited by Sergei Prokudin-Gorsky, a pioneer of Russian color photography. In 1909-1916, with the support of Emperor Nicholas II, he traveled to capture in color contemporary Russia, its culture, history, and modernization. In the collection of his photographs published on the website of the US Library of Congress, you can find 12 photographs taken in Perm.

Perm during Soviet times

In March 1918, a railway carriage under escort arrived in Perm with the Grand Duke Mikhail Alexandrovich (the successor to the Russian throne after the abdication of Emperor Nicholas II and, according to some opinions, the last emperor of the Russian Empire), his personal secretary, and other exiles. The Grand Duke and his secretary were allowed to stay at the hotel. On the night of June 12-13, 1918, Mikhail Alexandrovich and his secretary were abducted from the hotel, taken to the forest and killed by a group of local security officers and militiamen. Their bodies have not yet been found.

During the Russian Civil War, clashes took place in the Perm region. The Bolsheviks called the capture of Perm by the Whites and their advance to the west “the Permian catastrophe”. In the summer of 1919, the Reds began to recapture these territories. Before the retreat, the Whites burned almost all water transport on the Kama, and also blew up the railway bridge across the river.

In 1923, Perm lost its status as a regional center, since, according to the new administrative-territorial division, the Ural region was formed with the center in Sverdlovsk (Yekaterinburg).

According to the 1926 population census, the population of Perm was 84,804 people (39,968 men and 44,836 women). On November 3, 1927, Perm and the village of Motovilikha were united into one city. In 1931, Motovilikha received the status of an independent town called Molotovo. In 1938, it was re-incorporated into Perm under the name of the Molotov district (Motovilikhinsky district today).

By 1939, due to industrialization, the city’s population had more than tripled and amounted to 306 thousand people. On March 8, 1940, the city was renamed Molotov in honor of V.M. Molotov, a politician and chairman of the USSR government in 1930-1941.

During World War II, the city’s industry was reoriented towards military needs. Molotov Oblast became one of the main regions that received the evacuated population and enterprises. A total of 124 industrial enterprises were transferred to this region, of which 64 resumed production in Perm.

In 1955, the construction of the Kama hydroelectric power station was completed. On October 2, 1957, the name Perm was returned to the city in connection with the condemnation of the so-called “personality cult” that began in the USSR after Stalin’s death (Stalingrad was renamed Volgograd in 1961). In 1958, the first stage of the Perm Oil Refinery was put into operation. In 1967, the construction of the Communal Bridge was completed - an automobile-pedestrian bridge across the Kama connecting the city center with the right-bank part.

On March 18, 1965, on the spacecraft Voskhod-2, cosmonaut A.A. Leonov made the first spacewalk in the history of mankind. Before landing on Earth, the ship’s automatic attitude control system failed. P.I. Belyaev manually oriented the ship and turned on the braking engine. As a result, Voskhod-2 landed about 180 km north of Perm. After two nights in the open air, the cosmonauts were taken by helicopter to the Perm airport. The road in Perm (part of the Kazan tract), along which they were transported, was later named Cosmonauts Highway.

By 1979, the population of Perm was about 1 million people. Population growth in some years was 15% and was the largest among all cities in the Urals.

Perm in the 1990s-2000s

After 1991, the population began to decline continuously. In 2004, it fell below one million residents. Perm was able to regain the status of a city with a population of more than one million people only in 2011.

In the 1990s, the football club “Amkar” and the basketball club “Ural Great” were founded in Perm. In the 2000s, they achieved success in Russian football and basketball (Amkar played in the Premier League, was a finalist of the National Cup and a participant in the UEFA Cup, Ural Great became a two-time champion of Russia).

In 2005, Perm became the administrative center (capital) of Perm Krai, formed as a result of unification of Perm Oblast and the Komi-Permyak Autonomous Okrug.

The end of the 2000s was overshadowed by several tragic incidents related to Perm: a passenger plane crash on September 14, 2008 (88 dead) and a fire in the nightclub “Lame Horse” on December 5, 2009 (156 dead and 78 injured).

Perm - Features

The districts of Perm are located relatively far from each other and are often separated by forests, because the city was formed as a conglomeration of settlements scattered along the banks of the Kama River. Therefore, Perm is the third largest city in Russia by area after Moscow and St. Petersburg. It stretches along the Kama for 70 km and ranks third in length after St. Petersburg and Sochi.

Another characteristic feature of this city is a number of small rivers flowing mainly along the numerous city ravines. Forests occupy almost half of the territory of Perm (about 400 sq. km.). The City Day of Perm is celebrated on June 12, simultaneously with the Day of Russia.

The word “perm” appeared in Russian language a long time ago. It was first recorded in the chronicle “The Tale of Bygone Years” dating from the early 12th century, which listed the names of various tribes. Today, most researchers of Permian toponymy think that “pera maa” (“remote, distant land”) was the territory in which the ancestors of the present Komi-Zyryans lived. In accordance with the peculiarities of the Old Russian language, the word “pera maa” was transformed into “perm”.

Thus, first the land in the basin of the Vychegda River and the tribes living on it began to be called Perm. And then this word began to be used to call the land and tribes in the basin of the Kama River - that is, the place of residence of the Permian Komi (Great Perm). Later this name spread to the entire territory of today’s Perm Krai. At the end of the 18th century, it gave the name to Perm Governorate and its capital - Perm.

The climate of Perm is moderately continental with high humidity due to the location on the river and the proximity of the Kama reservoir. Winters are snowy and long; summers are moderately warm. The average temperature in January is minus 12.8 degrees Celsius, in July - plus 18.6 degrees Celsius.

Perm plays an important role in the economy of Russia. The city’s economy is characterized, first of all, by a developed heavy industry. The leading industries are electric power generation, oil and natural gas processing, mechanical engineering, chemistry and petrochemistry, woodworking, printing, and food processing. In mechanical engineering, a significant share is made by enterprises of the military-industrial complex. One of the largest Russian bicycle manufacturing enterprises, “Forward”, is located in Perm.

This city is one of the largest transport hubs in the country. Perm occupies a particularly advantageous geographical position, as it is located in the center Russia at the intersection of the railway from Europe to Asia (the Trans-Siberian Railway) with a sub-meridional waterway to the five seas. Perm is home to the two easternmost river ports in Europe. From here it is possible to transport goods to the ports of the Baltic, White, Black, Azov, and Caspian seas.

Perm International Airport (Bolshoye Savino) offers regular flights to Moscow, St. Petersburg, Sochi, Krasnodar, Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Rostov-on-Don, Surgut, Ufa.

All major sights, theaters and museums are concentrated in the city center, on the left bank of the Kama. It is difficult to get lost in the historic part of Perm. The city was built quite logically - wide streets were constructed parallel to the Kama River. Less significant streets and lanes connect them to each other. Perm managed to preserve a lot of architectural monuments of the 19th and 20th centuries.

Main Attractions of Perm

The Kama River Embankment - one of the main recreation places for residents and visitors of Perm attracted here by picturesque landscapes and a rich cultural life (exhibitions, festivals, art projects, installations, concerts, sports competitions, etc.). The length of the embankment is about 4 km.

One of the attractions of the embankment is the picturesque building of the Perm River Station (Monastyrskaya Street, 2) built in the Stalinist Empire style, in which an interactive exposition “Russia - my history” is open.

Opposite the river station you can see the art object “Happiness is not far off” - one of the most recognizable sights of Perm. The two-meter red letters that make up the inscription are one of the main symbols of the city. This art object became famous in Russia when after water discharge at the Kamskaya hydroelectric power station this part of the embankment was flooded. The “floating” inscription about happiness got a lot of attention on Russian social networks.

Perm State Art Gallery . This museum has one of the oldest and most valuable collections of art objects in Russia, more than 50 thousand works of art created in the period from ancient to modern times. There are collections of Perm wooden sculpture, icons, engravings, antique ceramics, medieval painting, etc. The exposition is located in a building that is an architectural monument - the Transfiguration Cathedral (1793-1832). Komsomolskiy Prospekt, 4.

Sculpture “Permyak Salty Ears” - an urban sculpture made in the form of a circle-frame with ears, where you can place your face and take a picture. The composition also includes the figure of the photographer standing opposite, ready to take a picture with an old camera. The sculpture is located opposite the building of the hotel “Prikamye” at Komsomolskiy Prospekt, 27.

It is the traditional nickname of the residents of the Perm region. The origins of this expression go back to the 15th century, when salt began to be mined here. Salt workers often had to carry heavy bags of salt on their shoulders. From constant contact with a caustic substance, their ears were swollen and reddened.

Perm Regional Museum - the oldest and largest museum of the Perm region, which includes more than 50 collections of regional, Russian, and world significance. The main exhibition is called “The History of the Kama Region” and consists of exhibits (household items, jewelry, books) telling about the life of people who lived in Perm Krai, from ancient times to the 20th century. The museum occupies an old mansion, which is known as Meshkov’s House (a famous merchant and philanthropist). Monastyrskaya Street, 11.

A branch of this museum is the Museum of Permian Antiquities , the main exposition of which includes skeletons, fossils, scientific reconstructions of ancient animals, ores, and other paleontological and geological finds. Sibirskaya Street, 15.
