The Characters

time travel girl characters

Lisa Leonor Lambridge

Her real name is Lisa Leonor Lambridge and she’s born on August 11, 1975. Three L in a name is really annoying and one of the numerous reasons why Lee keeps a list in her mind of things that are not normal about her. One of the topic is that she likes skateboarding and computers, unlike the other girls her age. How much she would give just to be able to travel through time like her movie hero Marty McFly! Maybe she’d better not dream of this – because one day, unexpectedly, her wish comes true …

Zachary Silverman

His real name is Zachary Matthew Levi Silverman, but his friends call him Zac. The young, scatterbrained scientist is a genius with an IQ of 180. His imagination goes beyond of what science considers possible. One day, he even cracks the space-time continuum and sends Lisa no less than 30 years into the future. If only it weren’t that difficult to bring her back …

Morgan Kendall

Morgan William Kendall, called “Momo,” is the most important person in Lisa’s life. If only he knew it! He once was her best childhood friend, but their ways separated. He’s in fact a very handsome and kind person. Unfortunately, Morgan grew up too soon and realized that he lives in an elitist world filled with parties, money and girls – and a bit too much alcohol. It seems there’s no way Lisa can get back close to him. If his future were not at stake, there would probably be no reason to ever invent a time machine …

Brittany Webster

If there’s one girl that matters to Lee, it’s Britt, her best girlfriend, and the only one she has. Britt is weird in any case, and that’s what Lisa likes most about her. Headstrong and stubborn, she refuses to believe in time travel at first . A fact she no longer can deny when it comes to the question o f how to get her best friend back, who gets lost in the space-time continuum. In every situation, Lee can count on her friend and her creative ideas on how to create a plausible alibi when needed.

Doc Silverman

Zac’s father is one of the wisest person Lisa has ever met. She enjoys listening to his stories. His knowledge about time, space, and eternity is enormous and sometimes exceeds her imagination. Since Lee hasn’t any parents or other adults t o give her advice for life, the Doc has become a kind of father-figure for her. Unfortunately, curiosity for science sometimes overruns his sense of responsibility.

Thomas Lambridge

He is Lisa’s brother and five years older than her. That excluded him from being a suitable playmate in her childhood years . Because of the age difference, it’s hard for Lisa to come to term with her brother, although she loves him very much . Forced by responsibility, Thomas grew up too quickly and became  a grouch who sometimes forget s that li f e also includes fun and joy.

If there is a true girly-girl in Lisa’s life, then it is Thomas’s girlfriend Fanny, who holds the view that skateboarding and computers  are not suitable for a classy girl. Lisa thinks Fanny is q uite old-fashioned. Their arguments about what a real girl should and should not  often end with Lisa hiding in her room , tinkering with her computer and dreaming about a better li f e in the future.

Steven Kendall

The popular Steven Kendall , Morgan’s older brother, is the coolest and hottest guy in Tomsville. His big  parties are infamous in the exclusive Westhill neighborhood. Unfortunately, they often end in chaos. Following his father’s footsteps, he has plans to continue and expand KAC industries, the automobile company of his father. He’s brimming with money and success, and he spoils his little brother Morgan more than what is good for him.

Carol Sanders

There is always a nag in a class, and in this case, it’s definitely Carol Sanders. She loves to control everything and everyone around her and be in charge of every her classmates take. Unluckily, Lisa regularly escapes her control, which causes Carol a hard time to keep her flock together.

Beatrice Evans

At first sight, she seems to be a nag too. However, it turns out that she holds a broader perception than her best friend, Carol. Her boyfriend Ross Gallagher is nine years older than she is and the first person to realize that Steven Kendall’s little brother Morgan is struggling with quite a few problems .

Uhh, Maddox … he can be so exhausting! If he only would shut his trap for once, but no. He adores Lisa and has a list of tiresome nicknames for her, like “Miss Lollipop.” Lisa repeatedly has to ward him off as he keeps on asking  her to  the annual fall school dance. As the son of a known fashion-designer, Maddox wears a lot of funny clothing and uses a tad too much hair gel.

the blondie-trio

The three blondes, Kimberley, Sandy , and Camilla, all have a crush on Morgan, much to Lisa’s chagrin. However, no one knows which one of the three he prefers – is it Kimberley with her lack of restraint when it comes to flirting with him, or is it sweet Sandy with her pout y mouth , or even Camilla, almost as mute as Morgan himself? The secret will be revealed at the fall dance at the latest.

Nathan Fletcher

He is truly a good-hearted guy and maybe the only one who realizes that there is still a bond between Lisa and Morgan. As one of Morgan’s best friends, he has more insight than others and utters his concern about Morgan’s lifestyle.

Paul Stewart

He is Morgan’s second-best friend and doesn’t talk much either. Anyway, he enjoys hanging in the city center with Morgan and Nathan after school and sharing  their fondness for the music of the eighties and nineties.

He’s Maddox’s twin-brother, but apart from their appearance, they don’t share much with each other. Louie is only ten minutes older than Maddox but acts as if he is at least five years ahead. Their ways also separate in the future.

Not a very important character in the story, but there’s a little thing to learn from him: if you want to achieve anything, you have to be devoted. Hard work comes before talent. Meaning, if your singing sounds like a howling coyote, you know you either have to give up or put in some extra effort .

Mrs. Whitfield

She’s a myster y . One day , she unexpectedly attends class as a substitute h istory teacher since  the regular teacher has broken his leg. Her teaching is very different from everything the class has ever experienced. Instead of delving in to the past, she takes the students  on a journey thirty years to the future. Lisa racks her brain who this teacher is. And why she is so keen on time travel experiments. Not only Zac but also Lisa is faced with a big surprise.

Last, not least ... evil Professor Ash

Every story needs a villain. In this case, it’s the physics teacher. Grey as ashes, he definitely lives up to his name. He mistreats his students whenever possible. His favorite victim is Morgan Kendall, whom , for reasons unknown, he hates more than anyone else. Lisa suspects there is a secret behind his behavior. Her suspicion is confirmed latest when he shows a particular interest in getting his hand s on Zac’s Time Transmitter.

Top 20 Best Time Travel Anime Series & Movies

Time machine in SteinsGate

Here’s a question: what’s your favorite time travel anime? Are there even enough good titles in this sci-fi subgenre?

It isn’t filled to the brim each season unlike with the case of isekai titles, but it’s not impossible to find some great ones.

If you’re in the mood for some mind-boggling twists and turns (or even minor time travel elements in an otherwise typical anime) check out my list below.

And fair warning: spoilers ahead(in some cases). Some titles here have time travel itself as a key turning point or surprise in the series, so if you don’t want to know any more just skim the titles and pick one that interests you!

20. Nobunaga Concerto

Nobunaga Concerto anime screenshot

I’m going to start with Nobunaga Concerto, an anime that does have time travel — but is also more of an isekai.

This is why I’m including it on my list but, but not the highest for sure. So what’s it all about?

As you may have already guessed, it involves Oda Nobunaga . Arguably one of the most popular Japanese historical figures.

He was a brutal leader, but he was also brilliant and a key figure in the reunification of Japan.

But Nobunaga isn’t the OP. In Nobunaga Concerto, he meets Saburou who mysteriously time travels from the 21st century and looks like him.

Saburou was just an ordinary high school kid, but now he must replace Nobunaga, who wishes to relax in his final years.

19. Natsu-iro no Sunadokei (Sandglass of Summer Colors)

Natsu-iro no Sunadokei screenshot

This is an old anime. Like, really old.

But while its character design, animation, and overall quality haven’t stood the test of time, it is a worthwhile show that involves more time travel than Nobunaga Concerto.

Sandglass of Summer Colors is an adaptation of a video game, a visual novel (VN) from Princess Soft that was released way back in 2002.

Also, it only has two episodes; it’s an OVA. Still, it’s an intriguing show.

Yes it once again involves a teenage boy, this time named Kotaro Makimura.

But here, the time travel comes in the form of Kotaro waking up to the next school year, and then going back and forth to specific days of his summer vacation.

Through this he learns some very crazy news about his girlfriend Kaho Serizawa. It gets deep.

18. Buddy Complex

Buddy Complex anime screenshot

In 2014, Sunrise released an action-heavy mecha title that surprisingly wasn’t another entry to their sprawling Gundam franchise.

It’s called Buddy Complex, and it does enough to distinguish itself from other similar titles with its appealing trio, plot, and solid execution.

Buddy Complex starts with the main hero Aoba Watase nearly getting killed in the hands of a massive robot from the future.

Hina Yumihara saves him, and also takes him 70 years into the future for him to learn all about the fighting robots and possibly prevent his demise.

Can he go back to his actual timeline? Or is he stuck in this future of warring military forces?

17. Doraemon

Doraemon anime screen

Yes, Doraemon is indeed a time-travel anime — and quite a good one at that.

Some argue that the time travel aspect is a mere gimmick here. But I honestly love what the anime has done with it.

The story isn’t about a dystopian future and someone who wants to save it by going back to the past.

No, it’s about Sewashi Nobi from the 22nd century sending a cat robot to improve the life of his grandfather Nobita Nobi — and that’s wonderful.

With 1,700 episodes, Doraemon has proven that this subgenre can be wholesome for kids.

Likewise, who doesn’t want a four-dimensional pouch that can bring out all sorts of gadgets of different sizes?

16. Punch Line

Punch Line anime screenshot

Punch Line was MAPPA’s third original anime after Garo: The Animation and Zankyou no Terror, the latter being one of my all-time favorites.

No, Punch Line wasn’t a modern classic in my eyes at all.

It didn’t have the serious or ambitious tone of those previous shows.

However, Punch Line was a creative risk that needs commending — and even a reappraisal from anime fans.

It’s silly but fully aware of it.

How silly? It involves spirits, nose bleeding, panty shots.

Also, the OP has to avoid looking at panties as he travels through time as a spirit. Otherwise a meteor immediately kills all life on Earth. So that’s fun.

15. InuYasha

InuYasha anime screenshot

I’ve got another entry here from Sunrise Studio.

InuYasha was one of the biggest shounen titles before series like Naruto, Bleach, and Fairy Tail took over — and it does have time travel.

Kagome Higurashi goes back hundreds of years to feudal Japan. The difference is instead of meeting a general, he meets a white-haired guy who also has dog ears.

Also, both Kagome and Inuyasha can travel between modern Japan and feudal Japan with relative ease.

And I suggest InuYasha just because it’s one of the best shounen series of all time. Time travel or not.

14. Irozuku Sekai no Ashita kara (Iroduku: The World in Colors)

Iroduku: The World in Colors anime

I have a soft spot for original anime. It takes a lot of guts to push through with a story you don’t know will work out.

It doesn’t have a built-in fan base unlike with adaptations of manga, LNs, and video games.

But Iroduku: The World in Colors was more than just an original anime.

It was a visually imaginative and wonderfully animated series, and it was clear that P.A. Works didn’t just do this half-heartedly.

Think of it as a blend of sci-fi, fantasy, and school drama.

A grandmother sends her emotionally distant granddaughter 60 years back to the past, but she doesn’t say why.

And now that she’s back to 2018(present when released) the young girl named Hitomi Tsukishiro learns all about self-discovery and human connection. Go see it.

13. Charlotte

Charlotte anime screenshot

Look, I get it — Angel Beats was a great anime series.

That was a show that managed to make me love all the students in just 13 episodes.

Plus, I’m confident that most viewers won’t ever forget the ending.

Since then, people have been clamoring for something like it from Jun Maeda.

Well Charlotte came into the fray, but it wasn’t exactly as good as Angel Beats or Clannad.

Still, Charlotte certainly has its moments as a school drama with time travel (among other powers).

Also this is an anime original, and I think the best moments outweigh the pacing and plot issues by the end.

Zipang anime screenshot

I don’t blame you if you haven’t heard of Zipang.

Despite being released two full years later than Naruto, Zipang somehow sports a more old-school design.

Then again, it’s a fitting choice given the military and historical setting.

Simply put, it’s about a Japanese missile destroyer (a navy warship) called Mirai that gets itself into a storm, but it was no ordinary storm.

Once Mirai gets away from the storm, its crew realizes that they’ve all time-traveled to 1942 — back to the Second World War.

Exciting, right?

Here’s the more interesting part: They must try their best not to change history. But can the crew keep themselves in the background when people are dying left and right?

11. Natsu no Arashi (Summer Storm!)

Natsu no Arashi anime screenshot

Interestingly enough, I didn’t catch this until last year — a full decade since its release.

But hey, this is an excellent example of “better late than never” because this is a fine mix of time travel and comedy.

Natsu no Arashi is about, again, a male teenager who meets a beautiful girl.

But Sayoko Arashiyama is far from an ordinary teenager.

She may not even be a teenager as Hajime Yasaka finds a photo of her in her 60s.

What’s going on? And why does Sayoko still look young?

Check out Natsu no Arashi. It’s made by Shaft so expect some visual delights.

10. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When They Cry)

When They Cry anime screenshot

We’re getting closer to the highest ranking so let’s be really careful now. I did warn about spoilers, so be prepared.

When They Cry deceives its audience by portraying itself as another generic anime with a guy OP and a bunch of cute girls.

Only for it to actually be a murder mystery with a time loop to boot.

Also, it may even be the only horror and time travel anime out there.

One minute you’re seeing kids playing together, all smiles. The next, they’re splattered with blood and having edgy expressions.

Orange anime screenshot

Admittedly I hate what happened to the anime adaptation here (although the movie Orange: Future was way better in terms of animation quality and consistency).

I read the manga, and it had moments that could’ve catapulted the anime as a classic.

But the anime did not meet or exceed expectations.

Orange was just above average. But still good enough to warrant a spot here.

If you think the anime was good and made you cry and laugh, consider the gorgeous and much more emotional manga too.

8. Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World)

ReZERO Starting Life in Another World

I think Re:Zero is a fine isekai and time travel anime.

It could’ve been like any typical isekai after all the hype for Sword Art Online. But it etched its own place in history.

Re:Zero makes you think that it’s just another guy getting transported to a fantasy world. But the time loop aspect elevates the series to new heights of dread and sheer desperation for Subaru.

It’s not just an escape to a better world with waifu material like Emilia and Rem, it’s overall a really engaging show. And I’m definitely excited for season 2 .

7. Kimi no Na wa. (Your Name.)

Kimi no Na wa. anime

Yup, this is big spoiler territory.

I sure hope that you’ve already watched the critically acclaimed movie, which also broke records around the world — or that you’ve read the novel of the same name.

Because time travel is what made audiences gasp in the middle of the movie. Kimi no Na wa is seemingly just about two people living in different regions… but what viewers didn’t know was that they also lived in different periods.

I still remember the shock everyone had in the cinemas (because I saw this twice in theaters).

There is nothing quite like the audiovisual spectacle of a Makoto Shinkai film on the big screen. And the ending is so rewarding if you’ve watched Five Centimeters Per Second.

6. Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei (The Tatami Galaxy)

Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei anime

Masaaki Yuasa needs no introduction after Devilman Crybaby garnered rave reviews from fans and critics all over the world, in part because it was available on Netflix.

But even before that, I was a huge fan of Yuasa’s directorial prowess.

He’s a man with impeccable skill, ensuring that both substance and style are way above the competition.

The Tatami Galaxy features rapid conversations (so you have to read fast if you prefer subtitles like me) and there’s so much going on when this is all about a young man’s life (and love life).

Watch him go through some sort of Groundhog Day, but in a much more artistic, magical manner.

It’s a rewarding experience across space and time (and tatami), I promise you that.

5. Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

Puella Magi Madoka Magica anime screenshot

At this point, I’m not sure which of my top picks have time travel as one of its biggest turning points.

This one has a certain episode in the latter half that completely turns it from an impressive series to arguably one of the best anime of all time.

You may not agree that it’s a “deconstruction” of the magical girl genre . But it’s clear evidence that Gen Urobuchi could change the game if he had the right team.

Also, this original anime looks breathtaking.

It’s dark, it’s exciting, it’s inspirational.

Shaft had a classic in their hands and they didn’t waste the opportunity.

4. Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya)

Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya anime screenshot

As one of Kyoto Animation’s first big hits, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya took the relatively small 2006 global anime community by storm.

It was hilarious, had a stellar set of characters, had a viral opening song, and had episodes that didn’t line up chronologically.

And yet the order of events didn’t ruin the story at all.

The nonlinear structure enabled a new way of looking at the character dynamics. And it made rewatches (in the chronological order) more rewarding.

Once you’ve watched the series (and bless you if you’ve seen the Endless Eight arc) go ahead and enjoy The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya .

3. Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time)

Girl Who Leapt Through Time anime screenshot

Like Masaaki Yuasa and Makoto Shinkai, Mamoru Hosoda is one of the best anime directors today.

And he’s done many more amazing films besides this one: Summer Wars, Wolf Children, and The Boy and the Beast, just to name a few.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time works as well as it does because of how it didn’t just use time travel as a gimmick.

It thought of how to shape the character and the story as a whole, creating tension and developing emotional impact in the latter half.

Plus I think many of us can relate to Makoto Shonno. Spending the last year of high school knowing that life is about to change, and yet you’re unsure of your own future.

It’s thrilling, hilarious, and has a heart at its core.

2. Boku dake ga Inai Machi (ERASED)

Boku dake ga Inai Machi anime screenshot

Am I making a controversial choice by putting this so high on my list?

Not really.

Sure, not everyone was a fan of the adaptation. And I admit that the suspense thriller aspect to it was a bit heavy-handed.

But like with how I feel about Zankyou no Terror, ERASED has highs that are so high, they easily make up for the lows.

It’s an imperfect masterpiece in my eyes.

The first episode was a 10/10 with how it easily grabbed my attention by the end with the change in aspect ratio, signifying the drastic change in time… it’s really interesting.

ERASED has a killer OP from none other than Asian Kung-Fu Generation, and I still think that the birthday scene of Kayo is one of the most heart-wrenching yet simultaneously heartwarming moments in anime.

Also, (big spoiler ahead) I dislike that some fans think the show was bad just because the guy didn’t end up with the girl he saved(and attempted to save again and again) in the past.

Look, you don’t just get to marry someone because you saved their life. You save someone because it’s the right thing to do, not because you expect something in return.

1. Steins;Gate

Steins;Gate anime screenshot

Is there even any other anime that could be at the No. 1 spot?

It’s the first show that comes to mind if you ask most anime fans what the best time travel anime is. And for good reason.

Furthermore, Steins;Gate isn’t just lauded as the top time travel series ever.

It’s also in the running as possible the best anime in general, usually in competition with FMA: Brotherhood.

Steins;Gate is both an outstanding gateway show to anime and one that becomes rewarding once you’ve consumed a ton of anime.

Some claim that it’s overrated, but one thing’s for sure: It set the standard for what a time travel anime could achieve in terms of sheer brilliance and entertainment.

The Best Female Time Travelers in TV History

Here are some of our favorite female time travelers to ever hit the small screen.

It’s been a good couple of years for women time travelers on television. Doctor Who  gave us our first female Doctor, Outlander got multi-generational with its time travel lady representation, and the show Timeless existed.

Why does this matter? Well, aside from the fact that the characters listed below rock in their own rights, they also represent a relatively rich television history of fictional female time travelers that is in stark contrast to TV’s cinematic cousin. When time-travelling rom com About Time came out in 2013, critics commented on the fact that, though time travel is a popular cinematic trope, it is hardly ever women who get to do the time-traveling (especially if you are Rachel McAdams).

This is less true on television, where women have been hopping through the space-time continuum for decades. Here is a list of some of the best fictional female time travelers of the TV world. Some of them are even from TV shows other than Doctor Who …

Lucy Preston, Timeless

When we first meet Lucy Preston, she is an unassuming historian, totally in the dark about the possibility of time travel. But, as the first season progresses, we learn just how tied up in time travel Lucy’s existence truly is. Through this journey of self-discovery, Lucy manages to maintain an enthusiasm about time travel and different eras.  Rectify ‘s Abigail Spencer plays the charismatic, clever, and loyal Lucy, who works with a team of two other people—scientist Rufus and soldier Wyatt—to try to protect time from the machinations of vengeful revolutionary Garcia Flynn. Timeless is an addictive science fiction adventure show with heart, and Lucy is a big reason for that.

Claire Beauchamp, Outlander

When news broke that Battlestar Galactica showrunner Ronald D. Moore would be adapting the historical time travel romance book series, Outlander , into a television show for Starz, it was hard to imagine just what the series would look like. Though Moore has proven himself a showrunner adept at balancing character-driven genre TV with the exploration of nuanced theme and, you know, space wars, this story of a British World War II nurse accidentally transported back in time to 1743 Scotland seemed like a strange decision. But Outlander fascinates and much of that has to do with protagonist Claire Beauchamp.

Outlander could have been so much flatter. It could have relied completely on Claire’s love life to keep viewers interesting. And, though Outlander does romance very well, Claire is more than her relationships with the men in her life. She is a woman trying to do the right thing as her allegiances quickly become confused. A woman out of time, she relies on her skills as a nurse, common sense, and a rough recollection of Scottish (and now Colonial American) history to survive.

Rose Tyler, Doctor Who

For many, Rose Tyler ( Billie Piper ) was their first Doctor Who companion, but – regardless of when you jumped on the Doctor Who bandwagon – her importance in the Whovian universe is hard to deny.

In many ways, Rose was the protagonist of the first two seasons of new Who . Her character was more than just the audience proxy; this was her story arguably more so than The Doctor’s. This became less true as new Who went on, but who knows what would have happened to Doctor Who ’s revival if Rose wasn’t so compelling. A working class young woman fed up with the limitations of her life as a shop girl, Rose jumped at the chance to travel aboard the T.A.R.D.I.S.

Though it is tempting for some to conflate Rose’s identity into her relationship with the Ninth or Tenth Doctors, Rose was so much more than that. She was an empathetic adventurer. She was fiercely loyal to everyone she loved, even when she wasn’t being particularly nice to them (sorry, Mickey). And she was the gateway character for so many new fans into the world of Doctor Who .

time travel girl characters

Cassie Railly & Others, 12 Monkeys

For awhile in 12 Monkeys , time travel was the domain of one man: James Cole. But once Dr. Cassandra Railly was sent to the future to save her life, the field was opened up for a whole host of great female time travelers. Oddly, Dr. Katarina Jones, the inventor of the time travel process called “splintering,” did not jump to the past herself for quite some time, and even then she only rarely repeated the process.

Jennifer Goines was perhaps the only one of the women in 12 Monkeys who enjoyed the normally painful process of splintering apart and reassembling in another period in history, but that was likely because of her intimate relationship with time itself as a Primary who could see many causality possibilities. She and Hannah, the fourth female time traveler in the series, spent the most time in the past, willingly or otherwise.

Felicity Porter, Felicity

You didn’t really think that J.J. Abrams could make it through an entire TV show without a time travel plot, did you? If so, perhaps you forgot about the five-episode arc that ended Felicity ‘s final season. Necessitated by an unexpected addition to the episode order after the planned series finale had already been shot, the show’s writers went all in on a time travel storyline. In the arc, a desperate Felicity uses a time travel spell from her kooky roommate’s book of spells to go back in time and change her love life. It doesn’t work out well. There are unexpected deaths, some retreading of romantic mistakes past, and Felicity eventually ends up in the psych ward. The unexpected time travel twist was tonally jarring in a show that, for most of its four seasons, had existed as a straightforward coming-of-age college, but it was also… kind of awesome?

Get the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!

Besides, if The Americans has proven anything, it’s that Keri Russell is awesome in any time period. Thank you for this delightfully zany contribution to the female time traveling tradition, J.J. Abrams .

Polly, Doctor Who

Polly (Anneke Wills) appeared in nine stories (or 36 episodes) of Doctor Who during the reigns of the First and Second Doctors. However, only her first story — “The War Machines” — remains completely intact. All other Polly episodes are either partially or completely missing. This has to be the reason Polly doesn’t get more love when it comes to listing Doctor Who’s best companions.

A resident of 1966 Britain, Polly and fellow companion Ben, accidentally get carried away by the T.A.R.D.I.S. when trying to return The Doctor’s key. They are not only present for the first regeneration of The Doctor, but for the first episode featuring long-time companion Jamie McCrimmon, “The Highlanders,” which also features Polly single-handedly capturing a British lieutenant, tying him up, and stealing all of his money.

The ladies over at Verity Podcast chatted about Polly in an episode about companions from missing episodes. Check it out if you’re looking to reminisce further about this groovy time-traveling lady.

Becca Brady, Hindsight

Few could have expected such a delightful degree of drama in VH1’s Hindsight . Canceled after being renewed for a second season (a reverse Timeless , if you will), the show follows Becca (Laura Ramsey), a woman who travels back in time 20 years to 1995. Part of this show’s charm lies in its nostalgia factor (complete with a killer ’90s soundtrack, of course), but it is protagonist’s likability and determination to live a fuller life that makes it so watchable even once the novelty of listening to The Cranberries has partially worn off.

It’s hard to pull off the nuance of a character whose greatest flaw is arguably her inability to make a decision for herself, but how could you not like someone who describes her mother’s love for her only daughter as “like how Darth Vader loved Luke”?

Sarah Connor from Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Sarah Connor, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Before Lena Headey was raising hell in the name of her children on Game of Thrones , she was raising hell in the name of her child on The Sarah Connor Chronicles  — and it made for glorious television. Time travel wasn’t a frequent plot device on this show (though it always loomed over its characters), but it was a huge catalyst in the pilot episode, which saw Sarah, John, and their new Terminator friend (played by Summer Glau) jumping forwards in time from 1999 to 2007 to avoid Skynet’s newest Terminator assassin.

We already knew Sarah Connor was a badass from her turns in The Terminator film series, but this show allowed Sarah to become the central protagonist in her own right, fleshing out both the darker and lighter sides of Sarah Connor.

Sarah Jane Smith, Doctor Who

Sarah Jane Smith (Elizabeth Sladen) is one of the most iconic companions in Doctor Who ’s long history, eventually getting her own spin-off show more than 30 years after her initial appearance on the time travel classic. She first met The Doctor when impersonating her aunt, a renowned virologist, to sneak into a top secret research facility — which is all kinds of awesome and also demonstrates that, though she sometimes fell into the problematic caricature of the obedient female companion, she often managed to break past those limits.

She was a co-star in her own right, calling out The Doctor when he needed it and, sometimes, saving the day herself. Looking back, it’s impressive to see how much Sarah Jane accomplished at a time in television history when it was even harder to be a time traveling lady.

Kira, Continuum

If you haven’t checked out this Canadian time travel drama, do it. Do it now. Airing for four seasons, the show tells the story of Kira (Rachel Nichols), a cop from a dystopian future who inadvertently leaves behind her family and everything she has ever known when pursuing a group of time-hopping anarchist terrorists.

Continuum ’s Kira is fascinating as a protagonist because she is often fighting to maintain a bleak version of the future, rather than trying to avert it. Politically and morally, her character motivations and actions can be hard to swallow, but, personally, it is easy to sympathize with her desperate desire to return to her husband and son.

Amanda Price, Lost in Austen

There have been so many incarnations of the Pride and Prejudice story, but few have gone so intensely meta as this miniseries about a modern-day Austenite, Amanda Price (Jemima Rooper), who finds herself switching places with Elizabeth Bennet and (more or less) living out the story arc of Pride and Prejudice . It’s hard to decide if Amanda’s trip back into Pride and Prejudice is more time travel or meta travel, but, either way, Lost in Austen embraces the fish-out-of-water theme that can make time travel narratives so enjoyable.

Add in a hearty helping of dramatic irony and you have yourself the ultimate Mary Sue adventure. The TV show doesn’t quite stick its ending, but watching Amanda Price snark her way through Regency England still makes this mini-series worthwhile.

Donna Noble, Doctor Who

Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) might not have stuck around Doctor Who for long, but she is not easily forgotten (even though she frustratingly can’t remember a thing). The only main companion from new Who to break the 20-something lady parade, Donna never wanted to shag The Doctor. She did, however, want to escape from temp life in modern-day Britain to travel with her best friend through space and time. Who can’t relate to that?

Some of Donna’s best adventures include her begging The Doctor to save at least one family from the destruction of Vesuvius; living a brave, but bleak life in a world where she never met The Doctor in “Turn Left”; and any time she hung out with her grandfather.

Tru Davies, Tru Calling

Before she was causing problems in The Dollhouse , Eliza Dushku was just a med student with the ability to relive the day before a wrongful death occurs. Tru Calling wasn’t the best time travel show ever made, but it was starting to do some really cool stuff right before it was canceled after two seasons. Plus, Tru was friends with Zach Galifianakis (or, more accurately, his character) before he made it big in The Hangover . If that’s not some kind of privileged time traveler knowledge, then I don’t know what is.

Martha Jones,  Doctor Who

Doctor Who ’s Martha Jones (Freema Agymen) didn’t have the best time traveling with the Doctor. Frankly, he spent most of their time together mourning Rose’s departure, which didn’t make for very cheery adventures. It’s not hard to see Martha Jones’ greatness, however. She was a doctor who was regularly left to her own devices to save both herself and the Doctor. (“Human Nature,” anyone?)

She is also one of the few companions who realized her relationship with The Doctor was unhealthy, and chose to extradite herself from it because she deserved better. That’s pretty cool. Furthermore, Martha is the very rare example of a time traveling woman of color — because, if there’s one thing more difficult than traveling through time as a lady, it’s traveling through time as a lady of color. For all of these reasons and more. Martha Jones gets all of the time traveling points.

Alex Drake, Ashes to Ashes

While Life on Mars tells the story of a dudely cop being sent back to the 1970s, its spinoff, Ashes to Ashes , sees a lady cop make the jump. At first, D.I. Alex Drake’s (Keeley Hawes) story arc seems all too similar to D.I. Sam Tyler’s, but there is enough nuance and divergence in this tale to eventually not only let it stand on its own, but add layers to its predecessor.

Alex’s gender also allows Ashes to Ashes to explore the treatment of women in 1981 in a more direct way than Sam’s tangential observations of how others treated police officer Annie Cartwright ever did. And what fun is time travel without some casual examination of feminist history?

Bill Potts,  Doctor Who

Speaking of fierce, time-traveling ladies of color,  Doctor Who  featured the curious, conscientious Bill traveling through space and time with the Thirteenth Doctor. While Bill’s storyline didn’t always do her justice (I’m not even going to touch the horrific trauma of her Cyberman fate), it was incredible fun traveling through time with Bill.

Bill’s cautious enthusiasm was infinitely relatable and, with her introduction to the TARDIS, we got to see another side to the Doctor, who served as a mentor and teacher to Bill in a dynamic that harkened back to the First Doctor’s grandfather relationship with Susan. Pearl Mackie infused Bill with a deep humanity that we missed from our TV screens when  Doctor Who returned to our screens—if only Bill could return to travel with the new Doctor…

Erica Strange, Being Erica

It seems strange that more time travel narratives haven’t used the plot device to explore mental health. Therapy and time travel go surprisingly well together, as Erica Strange (Erin Karpluk) learns on Canadian time travel drama Being Erica. In this untraditional genre mash-up, our protagonist is regularly sent back in time by her therapist to relive and/or change past events.

This show takes the standard time travel trope that There’s No Such Thing As Fixing The Past, But We Should Probably Try Anyway, and comes at it from an empowering, optimistic angle that is relatively rare in time travel TV. This dynamic should get boring, but it doesn’t. Instead, Erica continually learns from her mistakes. If only all time travelers were as emotionally intelligent as the Being Erica protagonist.

River Song,  Doctor Who

While many talk of the Steven Moffat era of Doctor Who in terms of its Doctors, River Song is somewhat of the definitive Doctor Who character for the Moffat era. He created the character before he was showrunner, in an episode he wrote for Russell T. Davies’ run, and brought her back in a more serialized manner for his own seasons. While River’s storyline didn’t always make sense, her conception as a character who is moving through time in a different order than the Doctor made for an ambitious, affecting story. Has there ever been a TV time travel character who has time travel so infused into her character arc? I don’t think so. The fierce, clever time traveler never needed the Doctor to define her story; from Day One (or the last day, depending on whose perspective you take), she had her own story to tell.

Clara Oswald, Doctor Who

While Clara’s introduction as The Impossibe Girl never really hit home on an emotional level, Clara’s arc as a Doctor Who companion really came into its own during her time with the Twelfth Doctor, culminating in what is arguably the best companion send-off in Doctor Who history in “Face the Raven” and “Hell Bent.”  Doctor Who hasn’t always done its female characters justice, but Clara was one companion who the show eventually figured out, with Jenna Coleman eventually being allowed to play not an “impossible girl,” but an ordinary woman who was made extraordinary through her travels in space and time.

The Doctor from Doctor Who (TV Series)

The Doctor, Doctor Who

I’m still not over the fact that Doctor Who  has given us our first female Doctor in the show’s more than 50-year-history (and probably won’t be… ever). Jodie Whittaker’s take on the iconic character has been a joy to watch, as she and her fam—including Mandip Gill’s Yaz, Tosin Cole’s Ryan, and Bradley Walsh’s Graham—travel space and, yes, time to help anyone who needs it.

Kate Kavanagh

Time travel romance novels are an enchanting genre that intertwines the wonder of adventuring through time with the exhilarating journey of falling in love across different eras. These stories often feature protagonists who find themselves transported to a different period, where they encounter love that transcends the boundaries of known physics. The genre combines historical and contemporary elements, delivering a rich tapestry of romance, adventure, and often, the quest to reconcile different worlds.

Among the most beloved time travel romance novels are the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon, which follows 20th-century nurse Claire Randall, who's mysteriously swept back to 18th-century Scotland where she meets the dashing Jamie Fraser; and The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger, a poignant tale of a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to uncontrollably travel through time, yet he maintains an enduring romance.

The Big Picture

  • The inclusion of a transgender character in Aliens in 1986 is a respectful and ahead-of-its-time move in filmmaking.
  • The film emphasizes character traits over gender, setting an example of inclusivity for survival and leadership roles.
  • Despite positive representation, the casting of a cisgender actor as a transgender character highlights Hollywood's historic problematic treatment of trans characters.

James Cameron ’s Aliens is often celebrated as one of the greatest movie sequels of all time, building and even improving on so much of its brilliant predecessor, Ridley Scott ’s Alien . However, one of the most fascinating details in Aliens is one that most viewers won’t have noticed on a first, or even second and third, viewing. When Ripley ( Sigourney Weaver ) returns home, she is questioned by representatives of Weyland-Yutani, the evil corporation that plotted to send the Nostromo crew to retrieve the Alien sample without telling them. On the TV behind Ripley are files shown on each member of the Nostromo crew , and we get the reveal that Lambert ( Veronica Cartwright ) was a “Despin Convert” from birth and transitioned from male to female with “no indication of suppressed traumas related to gender alteration.” This could be seen as just a small throwaway detail. But, it reveals so much about the attitudes of the filmmakers and how transgender people were treated in that time period.

'Aliens' Reveal Reinforces How Ahead Of Its Time 'Alien' Was

It’s fascinating to see a transgender character added to a story in 1986, especially when it is dealt with in such a respectful manner. Unfortunately, the cinema of this period was in no way kind to trans characters , often making them the villain of the story. (Look no further than the slasher Sleepaway Camp , released just three years before Aliens ). If this happened now, even such a small detail would sadly most likely cause huge controversy. But Alien and its successor are such unisex films; they just don't give misogynistic or transphobic people an opportunity to get up in arms.

Even the script for Alien was written so that the names were unisex , as writer Dan O'Bannon stated , so anyone could be cast. Ripley is not the hero simply because she is a woman. Ripley is the hero because she has the correct traits that help her to survive and keep her fighting. To look at a potential meta reason, Ripley being the hero also adds fascinating suspense for the audience to not be sure who the main character is on the first watch, as most of Sigourney Weaver's fellow cast members would have been considered larger Hollywood names at the time, such as John Hurt who plays Kane.

The 10 Best Horror Movies With Great Acting, Ranked

"I am your mother!"

Later on, in Cameron's Aliens , apart from the previously mentioned Lambert trans reveal, the space marines include Vasquez ( Jenette Goldstein ). This shows how, in a space horror where you are trying not to be killed by an alien, we exist more as a singular species than to be divided into genders and sex . As Goldstein herself explained in an interview , her character, Vasquez, would be chosen to "take point" on missions because her character was the most "loco." That made her the best person for the job and "whether it's a man or a woman it doesn't really matter" when survival is at stake. Once again, it is a character's traits, not their gender or sex, that allow them to lead, which is one of the reasons the Alien franchise is so universally beloved to this day. Now, when talking about Vasquez, it has to be mentioned that the character represents a whole other representation issue. Vasquez is clearly a Latinx character but is played by white actor Jenette Goldstein. So, Aliens really is a two-step forward, one-step back type of situation.

There Are Still Issues With Lambert's Transgender Reveal In 'Aliens'

Whilst it is incredible that a trans character was even included respectfully in Aliens , there are still some issues here that allude to the overall sad context of the time in which Aliens was produced. It's not proper representation when you have a transgender woman played by someone by a cisgender actor. (An issue that is in no way exclusive to Aliens. ) Whilst this is by no means Veronica Cartwright's fault, as it does not appear that Ridley Scott ever intended for Lambert to be trans while making the first movie, it does reveal how the nature of this character detail exposes Hollywood's overall attitude towards trans actors and characters during this time. Lambert being trans is a tiny detail that, as previously mentioned, would never be spotted on the first few watches and was added after the fact. It alludes to an attitude where filmmakers wanted to be diverse, but could not give actual attention to certain minorities , such as the transgender community.

Overall, Lambert’s transgender identity shows that today's filmmakers have not “gone woke,” as some have argued. Diversity has always been something at the forefront of creative minds. James Cameron and Ridley Scott always wanted to tell unisex stories. However, whilst individual filmmakers may have tried to be inclusive in the past, it should not be forgotten how much suffering the trans community and other minorities have had to go through for society to get to the point we are now.

I'm Still Questioning How Supernatural Season 1 Handled Sam's Story, 19 Years Later

Supernatural season 16 is finally possible after the cw's disappointing tv show cancellation, potential supernatural reboot gets seal of approval from series creator.

  • Season 1 of Supernatural sets the stage for epic adventures but lacks strong villains and iconic monsters.
  • Female characters are sidelined and repetitive storylines hinder the show's potential in early episodes.
  • The Winchester brothers' dynamic is still developing, with the overarching story not hitting its stride yet.

Supernatural ranks as one of the most enduringly popular fantasy TV series of all time – and deservedly so. Over an epic 15-season arc, fans got to enjoy the Winchesters going toe-to-toe with Lucifer, God, and all manner of fantastical ne'er-do-wells, with the fraternal duo involved in some of television's highest-stakes storylines. However, every adventure has to start somewhere. Although they would eventually face off against some of mythology's mightiest foes, Supernatural season 1 had somewhat humble beginnings.

Debuting in 2005, it was impossible to tell from Supernatural 's early episodes that the show would go on to become one of the most influential series in the entire fantasy drama genre. Although the Winchesters would eventually have the fate of the world in their hands, Supernatural season 1 focuses on largely self-contained stories following a monster-of-the-week format. 19 years later, these stories remain incredibly effective, with the season boasting some of Supernatural 's scariest episodes . Despite these successes, however, there are some harsh realities about season 1 that are difficult to ignore in 2024.

10 Supernatural Season 1 Has Weak Villains

Meg masters and the demon aren't as compelling as later foes.

Because Supernatural season 1 has to focus on setting up the lore and world that would define the rest of the series, the show has to juggle many different priorities at once. Perhaps inevitably, this means that some elements come across as less developed than others. A clear example of this is the show's main villains – Meg Masters and the as-yet-unnamed Azazel.

Although the demon that killed Jessica and Mary Winchester is mentioned in almost every episode, they receive next to no character development throughout the series, making them seem somewhat intangible. Likewise, Meg Masters doesn't feature until the halfway point of the season, and only appears in four episodes overall. Considering that Supernatural 's well-rounded and complex villains became one of the show's greatest strengths , both Azazel and Meg Masters – in season 1, at least – feel somewhat underwhelming.

9 The Show Becomes A Little Repetitive

In many episodes, the story follows the same pattern.

One of the biggest challenges for any monster-of-the-week series is keeping the formula fresh from episode to episode. Supernatural season 1 certainly contains some great standalone stories, with the terrifying "Bloody Mary" remaining a real highlight , there's no denying that sticking to the same formula hurts some episodes.

Installments like "Bugs", "Route 666", and "Hook Man" all suffer from somewhat derivative storytelling and a lack of connection to the overarching narrative of the season. Both episodes, and others like them, become predictable because of their formulaic approach and fail to add much to Sam and Dean's characters or the show's lore. It is perhaps a consequence of being able to binge episodes back to back in a way that hasn't always been possible, but some Supernatural episodes feel superfluous in hindsight.

8 Supernatural Season 1 Lacks Strong Female Characters

Like the series monsters, the pattern becomes repetitive.

Just as formulaic monster stories hurt Supernatural season 1's weakest episodes , the show also suffers from a failure to create fully realized female protagonists. In almost every episode, female characters follow the same story, either playing a peripheral supporting role to Sam and Dean's antics, or being in need of rescue. This narrative is often supplemented by a slightly flirtatious relationship with one of the brothers.

With the exception of Meg Masters, women in Supernatural season 1 tend not to get recurring roles . Even characters with potential for development are often abandoned as Sam and Dean's story moves on to the next hunt. Since the Winchesters are the show's main focus, this is perhaps understandable. However, when the cycle repeats episode after episode, it becomes impossible to ignore.

7 Dean's Love Interest Storyline Doesn't Work

It was never believable.

Even when the show does attempt to flesh out its female characters, Supernatural season 1 often falls short. Perhaps the best example of this is Cassie Robinson. Featured in "Route 666" – arguably one of season 1's weakest episodes – Cassie is described as Dean's first true love . The episode involves the pair trying to reconcile their complex feelings while battling a racist ghostly truck driver.

Although the attempt to provide some background to Dean Winchester's love-life is welcome, the story simply doesn't work. Not only do Dean and Cassie lack chemistry, but Supernatural completely abandons this subplot after season 1. In hindsight, this makes it difficult to believe the strength of Dean's feelings, especially since he's back to his flirtatious ways almost immediately.

6 Supernatural Season 1 Has A Small Number Of Iconic Monsters

It's quite surprising, given the subject.

Considering that Supernatural deals with fantastical monsters from myth and legend, you might expect season 1 to tackle many of the most iconic creatures as early as possible. After all, with no guarantee that future seasons would be on the cards, it would make sense for the series to showcase heavy-hitters like werewolves and zombies as early as possible. And yet, while creatures like vampires do feature, the show is actually much more diverse with its monsters than other similar series.

Although demonic possession and ghosts are recurring presences, unsung adversaries like wendigos, daēva, and shtriga also feature, highlighting Supernatural 's commitment to a diverse range of monsters from the outset. While some first-time viewers might expect to see more stereotypical creatures, this approach is actually to the show's credit. Not only does it build anticipation for later stories, but it also highlights that horrifying stories can come from anywhere.

5 Supernatural Never Did Sarah Blake Justice

She should have been an important recurring character.

Much as Dean's attempted romantic subplot in Supernatural season 1 failed to deliver, Sam's equivalent storyline is equally disappointing. However, whereas Dean's didn't seem to work on any level, Sam's is perhaps more of a let-down, since the show laid the foundations for Sarah Blake to have a prominent role, had the show gone in a different direction.

What makes Sam's relationship with Sarah feel particularly wasted is that their romance was made more complicated by Sam's past with Jessica. It was clear that he was still conflicted about her death, making his spark with Sarah a pivotal moment. She was clearly a special character if she was capable of helping Sam move on. The fact that Supernatural never mentioned Sarah again before killing her in season 8 feels like a real disservice, since unlike Cassie and Dean, the chemistry between the couple was palpable and she had already been initiated into Sam and Dean's world.

4 Finding John Winchester Was Almost Pointless

He was the main focus throughout season 1.

Overshadowing Sam and Dean's episodic adventures in Supernatural season 1 is their mission to find their father, John. In some ways, the story is one of the more frustrating aspects of the show, since the pair will often mention their absent father, only to head off on a mission that has little to do with finding him. However, when they are eventually united, it's notable just how pointless the endeavor ultimately feels.

...since finding (John) was the whole point of Supernatural season 1, his season 2 death undermines this crucial aspect of the series' narrative in a way that no amount of subsequent mentions and cameo appearances can resolve.

Jeffrey Dean Morgan's portrayal of John Winchester had the potential to be one of the show's strongest elements moving forward, yet after surviving his encounter with Azazel, John dies almost immediately in season 2. There's a compelling case to be made that his death was necessary in order to let Sam and Dean shine in their own right. However, since finding him was the whole point of Supernatural season 1, his season 2 death undermines this crucial aspect of the series' narrative in a way that no amount of subsequent mentions and cameo appearances can resolve.

3 Sam And Dean's Mom Should Have Made A Bigger Impact

It should have been a really profound moment.

Just as John's eventual fate felt somewhat disappointing, the appearance of Sam and Dean's mother is another Winchester family let-down. Given the impact that her death had on both brothers, seeing their mother again in "Home" should have been a deeply profound moment that shaped the series' overall narrative. However, despite this potential, Supernatural moved on from Mary's appearance almost immediately.

Not only was "Home" followed up by the standalone episode "Asylum", but Sam and Dean seemed almost totally unaffected by seeing their mother for the first time in decades. Since avenging her death is a key motivation for both brothers, this encounter could have inspired them even further. However, aside from a few passing mentions, Mary has little influence over the rest of season 1.

2 Sam And Deans' Dynamic Doesn't Work As Well As In Later Seasons

They took time to develop.

Thanks to 15 seasons of backstory and adventures, Sam and Dean Winchester are arguably two of the most beloved and celebrated fictional characters of the past two decades. However, while their dynamic quickly incorporated incredible emotional highs and lows, as well as great comedic moments, the sad truth is that their potential wasn't fully evident in season 1.

In "Hell House", for example, the pair's " prank war " feels incredibly forced, with their being little evidence of organic chemistry between actors Ackles and Padalecki.

Not only did the pair often rub each other up the wrong way, but the comedic moments that became such a staple of later Supernatural seasons failed to land in the same way in season 1. In "Hell House", for example, the pair's " prank war " feels incredibly forced, with their being little evidence of organic chemistry between actors Ackles and Padalecki. While this certainly changed as the show developed, it makes for some awkward viewing in early episodes.

1 Supernatural Season 1's Overarching Story Isn't As Strong As Others

The show didn't really come into its own until later.

Although the power-creep of later Supernatural seasons became a real problem, the show is always at its best when it balances believable stakes with genuine peril. In the strongest seasons, this results in an expansive narrative that plays out over multiple episodes, gradually building to an effective crescendo. Unfortunately, season 1 doesn't deliver on this front.

Meg Masters' peripheral presence, the stilted efforts to find John Winchester, and the unresolved issues over who the main demonic threat is mean that Supernatural season 1 lacks a really compelling overall story. Crucial plot elements, like the mission to find the colt, are introduced very late, allowing little time for their significance to sink in. Although many of Supernatural season 1's best episodes still hold up, the broader narrative isn't as compelling as it could have been.

Judge clarifies: Yes, Trump was found to have raped E. Jean Carroll

time travel girl characters

After Donald Trump was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming E. Jean Carroll , his legal team and his defenders lodged a frequent talking point.

Despite Carroll’s claims that Trump had raped her, they noted, the jury stopped short of saying he committed that particular offense. Instead, jurors opted for a second option: sexual abuse.

“This was a rape claim, this was a rape case all along, and the jury rejected that — made other findings,” his lawyer, Joe Tacopina, said outside the courthouse.

A judge has now clarified that this is basically a legal distinction without a real-world difference. He says that what the jury found Trump did was in fact rape, as commonly understood.

The filing from Judge Lewis A. Kaplan came as Trump’s attorneys have sought a new trial and have argued that the jury’s $5 million verdict against Trump in the civil suit was excessive. The reason, they argue, is that sexual abuse could be as limited as the “groping” of a victim’s breasts.

Kaplan roundly rejected Trump’s motion Tuesday, calling that argument “entirely unpersuasive.”

“The finding that Ms. Carroll failed to prove that she was ‘raped’ within the meaning of the New York Penal Law does not mean that she failed to prove that Mr. Trump ‘raped’ her as many people commonly understand the word ‘rape,’ ” Kaplan wrote.

He added: “Indeed, as the evidence at trial recounted below makes clear, the jury found that Mr. Trump in fact did exactly that.”

Kaplan said New York’s legal definition of “rape” is “far narrower” than the word is understood in “common modern parlance.”

The former requires forcible, unconsented-to penetration with one’s penis. But he said that the conduct the jury effectively found Trump liable for — forced digital penetration — meets a more common definition of rape. He cited definitions offered by the American Psychological Association and the Justice Department, which in 2012 expanded its definition of rape to include penetration “ with any body part or object .”

Kaplan also flatly rejected the Trump team’s suggestion that the conduct Trump was found liable for might have been as limited as groping of the breasts.

The reason? Trump was not accused of that, so the only alleged offense that would have qualified as “sexual abuse” was forced digital penetration. Beyond that, Trump was accused of putting his mouth on Carroll’s mouth and pulling down her tights, which Kaplan noted were not treated as alleged sexual abuse at trial.

“The jury’s finding of sexual abuse therefore necessarily implies that it found that Mr. Trump forcibly penetrated her vagina,” Kaplan wrote, calling it the “only remaining conclusion.”

Kaplan also noted that the verdict form did not ask the jury to decide exactly what conduct Trump had committed, and that neither prosecutors nor Trump’s lawyers had requested it to do so.

“Mr. Trump’s attempt to minimize the sexual abuse finding as perhaps resting on nothing more than groping of Ms. Carroll’s breasts through her clothing is frivolous,” Kaplan wrote.

He added that the jury clearly found that Trump had “ ‘raped’ her in the sense of that term broader than the New York Penal Law definition.”

The motion was a part of Trump’s efforts to appeal the verdict against him. That’s an effort that will apparently continue as he faces a separate defamation lawsuit from Carroll, dealing with claims Trump made about her allegations while he was still president.

But for now, Trump’s effort to push back has led to a rather remarkable clarification that severely undercuts his main talking point.

The ‘Orgasm Gap’ Isn’t Going Away for Straight Women

A new study suggests they still have fewer orgasms during sex than men do, even with age and experience.

Sex researchers and therapists have long known that women in heterosexual relationships tend to have fewer orgasms than men do. A large new study suggests that this “orgasm gap” persists — and does not improve with age.

The Numbers

The research, published recently in the journal Sexual Medicine, found that across all ages, men of all sexual orientations reported higher orgasm rates during sex — from 70 to 85 percent — compared with 46 to 58 percent for women. Lesbian and bisexual women between ages 35 and 49 reported higher orgasm rates than their heterosexual counterparts.

The analysis included data from eight Singles in America surveys, which are funded and conducted by Match.com annually in collaboration with The Kinsey Institute, the sexuality and relationships research program at Indiana University. The sample included more than 24,000 single Americans between the ages of 18 and 100.

Researchers were especially interested in the question of whether orgasm rates vary by age. Amanda Gesselman, a research scientist with the Kinsey Institute and lead author on the study, said she thought the team might find evidence that the orgasm gap narrows as women develop confidence and learn what they like (and, perhaps, their partners develop skills to help pleasure them).

However, while older gay and bisexual men and lesbian women did have higher orgasm rates, “we really didn’t see evidence of closing the orgasm gap overall,” she said, adding that she hopes future studies will explore the age-orgasm connection further.

“We really, as a society, sort of prioritize men’s pleasure and undervalue women’s sexual pleasure,” Dr. Gesselman said. “And I think that contributes to consistent disparities.”

The Limitations

Emily Nagoski, a sex educator and author of the book “Come Together” — who did not work on the new study — said a limitation of the study was that the survey asked: “When having sexual intercourse in general, what percentage of the time do you usually have an orgasm?” But it did not provide a more specific definition of what “sexual intercourse” means.

Research shows the majority of women require some form of clitoral stimulation in order to orgasm. So if straight women defined “sexual intercourse” as vaginal penetration alone, it makes sense that there was a significant gap in orgasm rates, she said.

A more revealing question might be, “What percentage of the sex you have do you like?” Dr. Nagoski said. “Orgasm is not the measure of a sexual encounter. Pleasure is the measure of a sexual encounter.”

Ultimately, what matters is that people spend time figuring out what makes a satisfying sexual encounter for them — which often includes things like connection, trust and comfort, said Kristen Mark, professor at the Eli Coleman Institute for Sexual and Gender Health at the University of Minnesota.

“There are so many ways to experience sexual pleasure, so it’s important not to equate the orgasm gap to a pleasure gap,” she added.

Dr. Mark said that may be especially true later in life, when factors like the hormonal changes that occur during menopause, a partner’s erectile problems or other health challenges can make it difficult for women to reliably orgasm during sex — but they might still be enjoying the sex they are having.

What Progress Looks Like

At the same time that sex researchers and experts are calling for a more nuanced understanding of what makes sex “successful,” they express frustration at the fact that heterosexual women of all ages are still not having as many orgasms as their partners.

Laurie Mintz, a professor of psychology at the University of Florida and author of “Becoming Cliterate: Why Orgasm Equality Matters — and How to Get It,” said the study’s findings underscore the need for comprehensive sex education. But that’s not enough.

Women need to figure out what they find pleasurable, and then feel confident and comfortable communicating that to their partners, Dr. Mintz said. That requires an attitude that conveys “I deserve pleasure as much as my partner,” she added — and it also requires a partner who is receptive and open. Dr. Mintz acknowledged that both are easier said than done, calling the orgasm gap an “insidious” byproduct of patriarchal attitudes toward sex.

Women who are unable to orgasm, or who are simply not having sex that feels good, can talk to their general practitioner, Dr. Mark added — though she lamented that it tends to fall on patients, not medical professionals, to initiate conversations about sexual health. And she acknowledged that most doctors get little if any training in sexual health. Still, “it’s their job to meet you where you are and find you the resources you need,” Dr. Mark said. For instance, issues like dryness and pain during sex after menopause — which can make orgasms elusive — are treatable.

But she and other sexual health experts emphasized that there are larger issues at play. Among them, the lingering idea that women’s sexual pleasure is somehow secondary.

“It can be fixed,” Dr. Mintz said. “It’s going to take education, and empowerment, and acceptance of vibrators and lubricants, and using the word ‘clitoris’ — and all of that.”
