Detailed Description

Model 1224 offers 24" between centers, with 12-1/2" swing over the ways or 9" swing over the banjo (toolrest base). Overall length is 46". The 1-5/8" diameter headstock spindle is mounted in four sealed-for-life ball bearings, and the inboard spindle nose is threaded 1"-8 tpi to accept a very wide variety of faceplates, chucks and accessories. The outboard end is threaded 3/4"-16 tpi for vacuum accessories. Both headstock and tailstock accept #2 Morse taper accessories. A 24-position indexing head is standard. Like a scaled-down version of Oneway's massive full-size lathes, Model 1224 is built on a heavy 4-1/2" diameter steel tube for almost perfect torsional rigidity. The ways are offset forward for easy access, allowing waste to fall through cleanly.

Model 1224 comes with a 1HP motor, which works on either 110 or 220 V and features a fully electronic variable speed switch with soft start, constant torque, and dynamic braking to a soft stop. A 2-step drive pulley lets you choose the speed range best suited to the diameter & length of the project at hand: 0-1200 or 0-4500 rpm. Standard equipment includes a steel stand, safety drive center, live tail center, 9" stainless steel toolrest & a 3" faceplate. Weighs 300 lbs.

An optional 24" bed extension (sold separately) bolts on in seconds, extending the length between centers to 48".

For turners who dream of owning a Oneway lathe, the model 1224 is a good way to make that dream a reality. While it’s not the least expensive Oneway, its additional capacity (for only about $200 more than the smaller 1018) makes the choice a no-brainer.

The 1018, with 10″ swing and 18″ between centers, is in the mini-lathe category even though in every respect other than capacity it’s in a class by itself. The 1224, with a 12″ swing and 24″ between centers, sufficiently increases capacity to satisfy all but the more serious bowl turners. We do wish the between-centers capacity were 6″ more to handle standard table leg lengths. A 24″ bed extension is available for an extra $275.

Long-term Review Oneway 1224

Hi Folks, Nearly a year ago I bought a new Oneway 1224 to replace my Jet VSmini. I have had many questions over that period of time asking me if the Oneway was worth the money and if there were any issues that I noticed so, I thought I would post a short review of my baby lathe. In general the fit and finish of the Oneway is superior to anything else I've seen. Now, that's not to say that the other machines I've experienced aren't great machines but, compared to PM (my other lathe is a PM 3520a), Nova, Jet, Stubby, Vicmark, Woodtek, General and Rikon, the Oneway is noticeably superior. The motor is very nearly silent, very strong and has not only electronic speed control but, electronic braking as well. The locking mechanisms for the Oneway are very strong and so easy to use that they can actually be a nuisance. The weight of the handles alone are enough to lock them in place when I would try to move the tool rest or tail stock. The 1224 has both a MT2 headstock and tailstock, unlike the larger Oneways that have a MT3 tailstock, which I see as an advantage. The downside to the tailstock is that it uses a keyway lock to secure the travel of the center and this faces up where dust and wood chips can easily clog the mechanism. Another big plus for this machine is the integrated steel base. The lower frame of the lathe is made from 1/4" steel and this lowers the center of gravity and makes the lathe very rigid. In it's OEM format, two plywood shelves are available for tools and such but, I found them to be wood chip collectors and made drawers to fit the spaces and these have worked very well to hold tools and accessories. I mounted my 1224 on wheels and the leveling tabs that are OEM perfectly fit a set of locking casters I had. I find that I turn most anything that would normally fit on a mini/midi lathe on the Oneway and use my 3520a mostly for larger bowls, spindles longer than 24" and HFs. Now, the big question, "is it worth the money?" For me the answer is yes. At the time I bought it the price was about $2.4K delivered which, was just about the same as I paid for the PM. Sometimes I find tools sized for the job to make the job a joy and the Oneway has fit the bill perfectly. Now, if I could only afford one lathe then the choice would be easy; PM3520b. The Powermatic is the best lathe on the market for the dollar cost averaging over time. Let me know if I there are any questions that I might be able to answer...

Thanks for the post Chris. Do the locking wheels hold well enough that the lathe doesn't move around?  

Hi Bernie, The locks work fine and most of the time I don't even use them. Truthfully, I haven't turned anything that's been so unbalanced that it would move around. Additionally, it has enough mass that it takes a fair amount of inertia that you have to work to move it. My PM3520a is also on casters, albeit larger casters. I wouldn't do it any other way. I also remembered another comment after looking at my own post (old-timers disease). One negative to the Oneway lathes is the inability to use the knock out bar on the tailstock. You have to use the self-ejector.

I have a simple quick honest question. What is a used in good condition Oneway 1224 worth? Just the lathe, tool rest and banjo. I see one on the web for $1,400. Honest answers please. If this is a good deal I'm sure it won't last. If not, what is a decent offer to present? The lathe is 6 hours away. Thank you in advance.. Wes

They are only $2491 new - so taking our "usual" adage of a used piece of equipment starts at 50% of new - ~$1200 to me is a fair starting point... To Chris' point - you may be able to buy "more" lathe (larger swing, accessories etc.) of an alternate brand... but, this is a one-way lathe! (that HAS to factor into it. As with any tool purchase - what do you intend to turn? (bowls, platters? you will outgrow this lathe quickly. On the other hand, if you plan to turn things less than 12" in diameter, then this will b a VERY robust lathe and likely outshine anything in this size. (stability and features, but, as you know, you are paying for this!

I turn spindles by the hundreds and the Oneway and the General with variable speed controls are a must for me. ​ The quality of a Oneway is great. I don't see that many on of these for sale like this so it might be a good deal. In my travels, I find the majority of turners are doing bowls and plates so maybe the swing is the issue here. Wes, Knowing now that you had and used a larger lathe (16XX) I do not think you would be happy with the 1224 for size, but sturdiness etc. you likely would have, regardless, I think waiting to find the "right one" is a better choice... JMHO
