Shannen Doherty, the former child star who rose to fame in Aaron Spelling’s Beverly Hills, 90210 , died Saturday after facing breast cancer for several years. She was 53 years old.

“It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease,” said Doherty’s publicist Leslie Sloane.

Born April 12, 1971 in Memphis, Tennessee, Shannen Doherty debuted on television in an episode of the Michael Landon-produced drama Father Murphy in 1981. One year later, Landon added Doherty to the cast of Little House on the Prairie , then retitled Little House: A New Beginning , as Jenny Wilder for the final 1981-82 season. She also appeared in the three Little House follow-up movies and a number of TV movies, and guest-starred in series like Magnum, P.I. , Airwolf and Landon’s Highway to Heaven before being cast in the two season NBC family drama Our House , which aired from 1986 to 1988.

Additionally, Doherty had roles in TV movies including Dying to Belong and List of a Lifetime . And she hosted a podcast, Let’s Be Clear With Shannen Doherty , in which she discussed her career and talked frankly about how breast cancer had impacted her life.

Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer in March 2015 and underwent a mastectomy, radiation and chemotherapy. She announced she was in remission in 2017, but the cancer returned two years later.

Doherty was briefly married twice: to poker player Rick Salomon from 2002 to 2003 and actor Ashley Hamilton from 1993 to 1994.

Randy Weiss Leads 2024 PBA50 Morgantown Classic

Morgantown, W.V. –  When Randy Weiss turned 50 on December 30, his focus turned to getting out and competing on the PBA50 Tour. The South Carolina native quickly made his presence noticed with a seventh place finish at the first stop of the season followed by another check at the second stop. His best finish so far was third at the Senior Masters, and on Tuesday he led Day 1 of qualifying at the 2024 PBA50 Morgantown Classic.

“I had been thinking about it for awhile. I didn’t quite really stop bowling the regular tour (PBA National Tour) because I wanted to. I definitely felt like I had some unfinished business left with bowling,” he said. “It has been pretty good. Using all the tricks I have learned over all of these years and see what we can do with them.”

The tricks he used included twirling his ball through the front and spinning it as the 37-foot Bat oil pattern was hooking more than what he has seen on the lanes this season. He focused on trying to get more side roll to make his ball not see the front as much. Those tricks helped him shoot 240, 202, 236, 247, 245, 255 and 232 for 1,657, an average of 236.71.

After his stellar performance at the Senior Masters, he skipped the U.S. Open to celebrate his 7-year-old daughter, Rosi’s birthday. Rosi and her 9-year-old brother, Gavin, are with their dad and they were cheering him on.

“I just enjoy them coming with me and getting to see new towns. We make sure we do some things outside of bowling to give them some new experiences. They definitely enjoy it,” he said. “All the time I get with them, I love.”

Looking ahead to bowling on the fresh oil inside Suburban Lanes Wednesday morning, he is glad he already got off to a nice start. He expects more urethane equipment will go down the lane, so he envisions having to move further right and play straighter. Weiss holds a 12-pin lead over A-squad leader David Handlowich Jr. He shot 183, 279, 206, 259, 249, 223 and 246, averaging 235. He only bowls a couple of PBA50 stops each year and this is his first one.

After having issues with his interchangeable thumb fitting properly in his urethane ball, he struggled early but was able to rebound in a huge way. He switched balls and from there he said it was lights out. He was crossing with John Burkett, who is in fourth place. In the eighth frame of their last game, "he congratulated me, shook my hand, and the rest is history," Handlowich Jr. said.

“Every ball I picked up after that first game was money no matter what I did,” he said. “John (Burkett) and I were battling for first and second for most of the day. I always wanted to come out and try to compete, but kids and family come first. I have never really bowled as good as I did today.”

His wife, Jackie was behind him all day cheering him on. He said she was shocked, and he described the experience as mind blowing. His first call was to his mom, Careen, back home in New York and he said there would be some tears. He credits the support from his wife and family, and the help and encouragement he has received for years from fellow New York bowlers Brian LeClair and Ryan Shafer with getting him to this point. He never imagined he would lead a PBA50 qualifying squad, as he did after the A-squad finished on Tuesday. And this all comes a few days before his 55th birthday on Thursday.

Weiss and the rest of the B-squad will get things started at 8:30 a.m. Eastern on Wednesday followed by the A-squad at 1:30 p.m. ET. At the end of qualifying, 31 players will move onto the Advancers Round on Thursday. Watch the final day of qualifying on BowlTV.

Many Lives Many Masters Review: Are Its Claims Valid?

Why is the book Many Lives Many Masters controversial? Are its claims true?

In 1981, the course of Dr. Brian Weiss’s career changed dramatically when one of his therapy patients, “Catherine,” suddenly recalled details of her past lives while under hypnosis. Weiss wrote about his experience with Catherine in his book Many Lives Many Masters . In the decades since the book’s publication, many have grappled with its claims.

Continue reading for our Many Lives Many Masters review.

Examining the Claims of Many Lives Many Masters

Though Weiss, like many scientists, is a natural skeptic, his experience with this patient convinced him that reincarnation is real, human souls are eternal, and there are spiritual “Masters” providing help and guidance from beyond the veil. Our Many Lives Many Masters review examines the book’s claims.

Could Catherine’s Story Be a Case of Cryptomnesia?

The real “Catherine” has never come forward, so the few details Weiss provides are our only source of context for her life. This lack of context is important because many other cases of past life regressions have turned out to be the result of cryptomnesia, or false memories spun from forgotten details of a person’s life experiences.

For example, while under hypnosis in 1952, a Colorado housewife named Virginia Tighe recalled a past life as an Irishwoman named Bridey Murphy . The story collapsed, however, when researchers discovered that Tighe had lived across the street from an Irish immigrant named Bridie Murphy Corkell as a young child. They concluded that she must have stored this name as a buried memory, which was later unearthed and spun into an entire “past life” story under the suggestive power of hypnosis. Similarly, without knowing more about Catherine’s life, it’s impossible to rule out such an explanation for her past life memories.

The Use of Hypnosis

Using hypnosis to recover repressed memories , including repressed trauma, was a popular therapeutic technique in the early 1980s, when Weiss treated Catherine. However, psychologists are now split on whether this is a valid therapeutic practice . Some psychologists condemn the practice because research shows it’s possible for therapists to implant false memories in the minds of hypnotized patients. These false memories often feel so vivid that the patient fully believes they’re real, which is especially dangerous when the false memory relates to abuse.

Weiss assumes that processing a past-life memory of drowning is what cured Catherine’s nightmares. However, it’s also possible that merely being under hypnosis alleviated her nightmares, regardless of her specific memories; studies show that practicing relaxation techniques—such as hypnosis—can alleviate adult nightmares .

Fact-Checking Catherine and Weiss’s Claims

How likely is it that Catherine was describing an actual past-life experience? Let’s evaluate the evidence.

First, Catherine specifically named the year of the first past-life memory she recovered as “1863 BC.” Some reviewers took this specificity as a sign that Catherine (or Weiss) lied about her experience. If Catherine were truly speaking from the viewpoint of someone in that time, she would have no reason to add “BC,” as scholars wouldn’t begin dividing history into “BC” and “AD” until more than 2,000 years after that supposed memory.

However, this argument assumes that, while under hypnosis, Catherine was not at all aware of her present reality (and her knowledge of the BC/AD divide). When Catherine recalled other past lives, she withheld certain embarrassing information in the moment and only disclosed it to Weiss later on. This indicates that Catherine’s conscious mind was still somewhat active and able to intervene during hypnosis, which means she theoretically could have interpreted the memory through the lens of her modern conception of time. Second, Weiss claims he ruled out any other possible explanation for Catherine’s past-life visions, yet he failed to consider that anxiety and depression (both of which Catherine struggled with) can sometimes cause hallucinations, even in the absence of other psychiatric disorders .

However, to Weiss’s credit, these causes are unlikely to fully explain Catherine’s experiences, since the hallucinations caused by depression tend to be brief, and Catherine’s visions often lasted over an hour. Furthermore, hallucinations caused by anxiety are more likely to be auditory than visual , and Catherine’s past-life memories focused on visual information. Therefore, while Weiss didn’t consider Catherine’s anxiety and depression as possible explanations for her experience, they’re still unlikely to be the root causes.

The Aftermath

Weiss’s experience with Catherine opened his eyes to a new approach to therapy. While he doesn’t necessarily think that past life regression therapy is the right treatment for everyone, he wants psychiatrists to be open-minded and keep it as an option for those with disabling psychiatric symptoms.

In the decades since Many Lives, Many Masters was published, the psychiatric establishment has not heeded Weiss’s call. While scientific research on past life regression and other metaphysical topics remained popular into the early 1990s, its popularity has waned and is now mostly relegated to niche journals . However, while the American Psychological Association hasn’t endorsed past life regression therapy, they also haven’t condemned it , leaving the door open for potential future research.
