The popularity of Coachella has bred a new kind of music festival – a nostalgia-fueled Woodstock in miniature, filled with the iconic bands and artists of rock & roll’s past. Last fall saw the inaugural Desert Trip – a two-weekend extravaganza featuring the likes of the Rolling Stones , Paul McCartney , and The Who.

Los Angeles got its own taste of a throwback weekend with The Classic West on July 15 and 16. The two-night concert at Dodger Stadium featured The Doobie Brothers, Steely Dan, Earth, Wind, and Fire, and Journey, as well as headliners The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac. The same groups will do it all over again for The Classic East on July 29 and 30 at Citi Field in New York.

Classic West was the perfect hazy summer rock concert – a chance to wander down memory lane (even if it might be your parent’s memories and not yours) and soak in the good vibes. They don’t call it “The Classic” for nothing. Here are our six favorite moments from the weekend-long classic rock festival.

We Will Never Be Here Again…

An inevitable part of these shows is the absence of band members – whether they’ve simply left the band or died. Tributes and a bittersweet melancholy were a natural part of the weekend, including a medley in honor of Maurice White and a celebration of the remaining original members of Earth, Wind, and Fire. The most palpable absence was that of Eagles singer Glenn Frey – this show marked the band’s first concert since his Jan. 2016 death. The lack of his presence was still a fresh wound felt by band members and fans alike.

Frey’s band members spoke lovingly of their missing friend. Guitarist Joe Walsh kicked off the show, saying, “This one’s for you, Glenn – you’re in our hearts tonight and the music goes on.” Don Henley noted, “Glenn is with us tonight. Glenn is with us in spirit, and Glenn is also here in the form of his fine son Deacon.”

Looking uncannily like his father during the early days of the band, Deacon Frey took over some of his dad’s lead vocals, most notably on “Take it Easy,” “Peaceful Easy Feeling,” and “Already Gone” (country singer Vince Gill did some of the heavy lifting on other Frey-led charts). The talents and unassailable grace of Frey’s 24-year-old son Deacon were the revelations of the night. His soulful vocals belied a deep well of talent suggesting he’s inherited much of what made Glenn Frey a singular voice. He didn’t merely pop out to cover a few songs — he truly integrated into the band, lending background harmonies and guitar stylings throughout the night and never leaving the stage. But it was his emotional proclamations that really brought down the house, as he told the audience, “The only remedy for something like that [grief] is love – you guys are my medicine tonight.” He took the musical break in “Peaceful Easy Feeling” to ask, while visibly choked up, “Anyone out there miss my dad?” – a query that drew loud cheers and provoked many tear-stained faces.

Artists outside the band also paid tribute to the late Eagle. During Sunday night’s concert, Fleetwood Mac’s Stevie Nicks dedicated “Landslide,” her emotional ballad of loss and change, to Glenn Frey and Deacon for a performance she said would have made his dad proud. Nicks waited until the conclusion of the song, remarking with a lump in her throat, “I didn’t do it before because I knew I would have started to cry and I wouldn’t have gotten through it.”

They Called it Paradise

Part of the magic of The Eagles is that their soulful harmonies have always meant they didn’t need much more than a few instruments and their own voices to put on an amazing show. But they pulled out all the stops for this special engagement, bringing on a cadre of gifted musicians and instrumental acrobatics to wow the crowd. Bob Seger joined the group on “Heartache Tonight,” a tune he co-wrote with the band over the phone.

The most important special guests, however, were those without recognizable names and platinum albums to their credit. Henley sang the final track from the Hotel California album, “The Last Resort,” a song he noted is rarely performed in concert because of the “personnel” it requires. They certainly didn’t skimp on personnel, bringing on a string section to provide the necessary backing on this provocative ballad about our tendencies to destroy the things we find most beautiful. It was a rare treat to hear live in concert with full orchestrations what Frey once dubbed “Henley’s opus.” The Eagles were also joined by a killer horn section that added exciting riffs to a new arrangement of “Witchy Woman,” and a stirring, mariachi-infused trumpet solo to the opening of “Hotel California.”

An Axe to Grind

Both The Eagles ’ Joe Walsh and Fleetwood Mac’s Lindsey Buckingham hold a place of honor on Rolling Stone’s list of “100 Greatest Guitarists.” With many on that list no longer living, it’s easy to think the chance for a one-two punch like “The Classic” is something that belongs only to the past and the likes of the Monterey Pop Festival. To see two such legends strut their stuff in one weekend? It’s almost too good to be true.

Walsh was in top form Saturday night, from his iconic riffs in “Life in the Fast Lane” and “Hotel California” to his lengthier jam sessions on his solo charts “Life’s Been Good” and “Rocky Mountain Way.” He has a mesmerizing talent and a dexterity with his instrument that makes it impossible to take your eyes off him when he’s performing.

It was Buckingham’s turn to bring the goods Sunday night, with his dizzying guitar sprees through the likes of “Big Love” and “Never Going Back Again” that made him appear a man possessed by an inner spirit that flits between demon and rock angel. For all of his intensity and musical aggression on “Big Love,” “The Chain,” and “Go Your Own Way,” he brought an equally compelling softness and deft touch to the lilting tunes of “Never Going Back Again” and “Landslide.”

Walsh is all rock & roll bravado fueled by his mischievous spirit – an antic sprite of music. In contrast, Buckingham is the rock answer to classical guitar with fingerpicking that elevates his folk music roots into stadium-worthy licks. The two are the yin and yang of epic guitar playing, particularly when presented in direct complement and contrast to one another.

Don’t Say That You Love Me

In 1979, Fleetwood Mac made history (and gave a college marching band a platinum album) when they recruited the USC Marching Band to record and star in the music video for “Tusk.” Mick Fleetwood later called the moment his “lunacy.” In 2012, Stevie Nicks told the BBC, “I honestly think that that might be the very best thing that came out of that whole record because it was so crazy and the song was so insane and what we did with it with that video was so magical, that nobody, I don’t think any band has ever re-created something quite that cinematic.”

To see Fleetwood Mac bring the same life, fire, and yes, lunacy to a live rendition of this tune nearly 40 years after the original in the very stadium where they crafted an insane and iconic music video defies description. Fleetwood was in top form on drums, and Buckingham can still bellow his unintelligible and chilling vocal riffs with guttural aplomb. For good measure, they included the original footage of the music video and the Trojan Marching Band on the screen behind them. It was the most meta moment of the night and a chance to feel like you were being transported back into a part of rock history.

Shatter Your Illusions of Love

Stevie Nicks is a witchy, mystical, supreme goddess. And she brought all of her boho-queen magic to the stage this weekend, most particularly on a haunting rendition of “Gold Dust Woman.” Swathed in a gold shawl, Nicks first wowed with her signature vocals but then brought the crowd to its feet with her mystic moves, which included a series of spins and a litany of poses that erupted out of her as she let the power of the music drive her.

Nicks has always crafted a witchy, numinous image, but the reason it works is because her performances make you feel as if her vocals and her movements are truly being fed by some magical inner life force. Her voice has a haunting power that suggests she’s not exactly of this world, and her accompanying iconic moves and clothing just seal the deal.

“Don’t Stop” x Two

Sunday’s show was the night of “Don’t Stop” encores – first, Journey made “Don’t Stop Believin’” their penultimate tune and then Fleetwood Mac wrapped up the entire weekend with “Don’t Stop (Thinking About Tomorrow).” The two charts are show-closers for a reason.

“Don’t Stop Believin’” has become a bit of a musical punch line at this point, thanks to the likes of Glee and endless karaoke covers. But you’d have to be quite the curmudgeon to not enjoy the experience of hearing it earnestly belted out across a stadium of thousands of eager concertgoers.

“Don’t Stop Thinking About Tomorrow” is almost the antithesis of the other “Don’t Stop,” a jaunty pop-rock blast of optimism in contrast to the power ballad melodrama of the Journey tune. For fans of Fleetwood Mac, it was a thrill to end the night with the Christine McVie song, considering she was absent from the tour line-up from 1997-2014. Accompanied by a flurry of fireworks, “Don’t Stop” sent the crowd out on a literal high note – a frenzy of effervescent light and fizzy good tunes.

Three Rivers Stadium Eagles concert in Pittsburgh, PA – July 24, 1976

eagles fleetwood mac tour

The Three Rivers Stadium in Pittsburgh was where the Eagles with Fleetwood Mac and Boz Scaggs performed on July 24, 1976. This was only the second concert of the summer at the stadium. ZZ Top was the first on June 12, and according to what was written it did not go well. Unfortunately, almost everything that was written about Three Rivers Stadium right after that show only focused on the disaster of that ZZ Top concert and not the music of the Eagles concert.

The Eagles had their two shows at the Spectrum in Philadelphia just three days later. They were nearing the end of the One of These Nights tour.

Three Rivers Stadium was home to Pittsburgh Pirates baseball and Pittsburgh Steelers football from 1970-2000.

An article written by Scott Mervis of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette appeared in the online Post-Gazette on March 22, 2022 about this particular Eagles concert in 1976. And, it has a link within the article to this page on Randy Meisner Hearts On Fire . The article is titled “ 1976: The Year the Eagles Saved Stadium Concerts in Pittsburgh and Released Hotel California “ . It’s a very interesting Eagles article written by Scott Mervis, so you may want to take a few moments just to read it. If you can’t access the newspaper site, this is the pdf version .

Randy the Peacemaker “We came to play”

Since Randy did not usually speak from the stage, it’s amazing he said something. That must mean the crowd was really bad.

47 years later and still remembered as the BEST concert ever….hands down

That’s good to know. With the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, AND Boz Scaggs it doesn’t surprise me that it was a great day.

July 4, 1976: How Rock Stars Celebrated America’s Bicentennial

You only turn 200 once. In 1976, the United States geared up for a series of boisterous bicentennials celebrations ranging from parades to fireworks to commemorative exhibitions to, of course, concerts. On July 4, the official anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, bands across the country -- some not even Americans themselves -- hit the stage to salute the milestone.

Elvis Presley

Elvis Presley , the "King of Rock and Roll" himself, performed for a special bicentennial-billed performance in Tulsa, Okla. Roughly a year prior to his final live performance and death in 1977, the singer swung through several of his own hits like "Hound Dog" and "Jailhouse Rock," as well as a slew of covers such as Ray Charles' "I've Got A Woman," Gordon Lightfoot 's "Early Morning Rain" and Olivia Newton-John's "If You Love Me (Let Me Know)." The performance was recorded and released as a live album.

Even the Brits got into the patriotic spirit. Elton John , then on his Louder Than Concorde But Not Quite as Pretty tour, appeared in front of thousands in Foxboro, Mass. donning a bedazzled Lady Liberty outfit. "Elton ripped off his crown, then his robe to reveal his blue t-shirt, red, white and blue satin basketball shorts in American flag motif," recalled one attendee , "he jumped off the top of the piano and started rockin’ with the band!"

Bruce Springsteen

Others kept things a bit more subdued. Bruce Springsteen and his E Street band played an small impromptu club show at The Stone Pony in Ashbury Park, N.J., the local rock club that had helped launched his career. The setlist included a cover of Stax-singer Eddie Floyd's "Knock on Wood," which Springsteen launched into alongside fellow New Jerseyan, Southside Johnny .

Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Loggins & Messina, Dan Fogelberg

Fans across the country were also treated to some one-of-a-kind collaborative concerts. The Eagles , Fleetwood Mac , Loggins & Messina and Dan Fogelberg performed for a crowd of 37,000 in Tampa, Fla. The show was headlined by the Eagles, who had released their massively successful  Greatest Hits album earlier in the year.

Head East, Rick Derringer, Mahogany Rush, Ted Nugent, Foghat

Further north, fans packed the Rockford Speedway in Loves Park, Ill. for a revved up show from Head East , Rick Derringer, Mahogany Rush , Ted Nugent and Foghat . "Since we all know this is your birthday today, we're gonna play your birthday song," Mahogany Rush's Canadian frontman Frank Marino told the crowd  just before launching into a rock rendition of "The Star Spangled Banner." Contrary to the poster below, Jeff Beck did not appear at this show but elsewhere instead...

ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Blue Oyster Cult, the Outlaws, Point Blank

Southern rock was on full display in Memphis, Tenn. as ZZ Top and Lynyrd Skynyrd took the stage (along with Blue Oyster Cult , the Outlaws and Point Blank.) ZZ Top's portion in particular left a lasting impression on fans -- the band, then traveling on their Worldwide Texas tour included actual livestock on stage. "The Worldwide Texas tour was a huge tour, I mean it was elaborate even for the time, and it was extremely expensive," Billy Gibbons remembered , "and we weren't big enough to do that and everybody told us, but we did it."

Peter Frampton, Gary Wright, Natural Gas

Down the road at the Tennessee State Fairgrounds in Nashville, Peter Frampton (who was later motivated by the September 11 attacks to become a U.S. citizen himself), fresh off the monumental success of 1976's  Frampton Comes Alive! was holding his own Fourth of July bash with supporting acts Gary Wright and Natural Gas.

Aerosmith, Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Jeff Beck, Black Oak Arkansas

Aerosmith headlined in Winston, N.C., taking the stage after multiple opening acts including Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band, Jeff Beck and Black Oak Arkansas .

Talking Heads

In addition to rock and roll, punk and new wave also continued their steady rise. Talking Heads played a show at New York City's beloved CBGB's. At the time, the band was busy prepping to record their debut studio album,  Talking Heads:77 .

The Ramones

The Ramones took the party overseas for a supremely successful gig at The Roundhouse in London. (They followed another American act, the Flamin' Groovies from San Francisco.) The next evening, July 5, the band met their British counterparts, the Clash and the Sex Pistols . "They said the U.K. was interested and we’d grown up with all our favorite bands coming from the U.K.," drummer  Tommy Ramone   told Uncut , "so we were very excited and we thought it might give us our break."

Alice Cooper

Of course, where there was success, there was also a few accounts of patriotic plans that didn't go quite as anticipated. Alice Cooper had recently released his second solo album Goes To Hell , but the subsequent tour, which was to include a stop at the Detroit State Fairgrounds with guests Rick Derringer and Thin Lizzy , was cancelled when Cooper fell ill with anemia.

Willie Nelson

Willie Nelson was ready to host his fourth annual Fourth of July Picnic, but the three-day event was cut short on July 5 when the PA system shorted out due to rain. More trouble followed: one picnic attendant drowned, four were stabbed and 140 arrests were made, leading to significantly tighter security at the festival in following years.

Outside of rock, the United State Olympics committee made bids for both the summer and winter 1976 Olympic Games in acknowledgment of the bicentennial, though neither came to fruition. Los Angeles lost the summer to Montreal, Canada, while Denver initially won the winter bid but financial concerns led Colorado voters to reject the funding and the games were instead held in Innsbruck, Austria. Meanwhile, in extraterrestrial news, NASA planned for a spacecraft, Viking 1, to land on Mars on July 4, but a rocky landing site pushed the expedition back several weeks.

"The American adventure is a continuing process," President Gerald Ford, who would be succeeded by Jimmy Carter a few months later,  said in a speech outside of Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 1976. He had left Washington D.C in good hands:  Johnny Cash  served as Grand Marshall of the official bicentennial parade for a crowd of 500,000. "As one milestone is passed, another is sighted. As we achieve one goal -- a longer lifespan, a literate population, a leadership in world affairs -- we raise our sights."

It’s On! Eagles, Fleetwood Mac to Headline Classic East and West

eagles fleetwood mac tour

Update (April 7, 2017): Reminder… Tickets go on sale today at 10 a.m. local time for The Classic Concerts. For the Classic East click here . For the Classic West…  here .

Our story from when the news broke on March 29…

The old adage “where there’s smoke, there’s fire” certainly applies here. Ever since earlier this month (March 2) when  Billboard first reported of a pair of classic rock festivals headlined by the  Eagles and  Fleetwood Mac , details kept emerging with specific dates and then full lineups. Today (March 29), the rumors (or is that  rumours ?) were confirmed.

The events, billed as The Classic East at New York City’s Citi Field and The Classic West at Los Angeles’ Dodger Stadium, were formally announced with the lineups just as they had been reported.

The Classic West comes first with the Eagles headlining Saturday, July 15, with support by  Steely Dan and the  Doobie Brothers . On Sunday, July 16, Fleetwood Mac headlines, with  Journey and  Earth, Wind & Fire opening.

Two weeks’ later, the same bill arrives at Citi Field on July 29-30.

Mick Fleetwood told  The New York Times that he had been in attendance last October at Desert Trip. “I was there like a stalker fan,” Fleetwood said. “And it was so cool! It was emotionally charged.”

As the announcement breathlessly states: “The Classic East (and The Classic West) will be the first time in history that these six esteemed artists have ever played together on the same stage in two of America’s greatest cities for rock & roll.”

Of the parallels in the two headliners’ careers, Fleetwood said to the  Times : “The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac were sort of dueling bands in many ways. We all knew each other and all hung out together in the early days.”

Hello, I'm not sure if this belongs in this section or not. I looked in "singing for the sake of the song" but I couldn't tell if I should put it there. Anyhow, I'm reading a book from Carol Ann Harris who was the girlfriend of Lindsey Buckingham. She mentions in her book that the Eagles opened up for Fleetwood Mac on their Rumors tour in 1977. I don't know if this is accurate since the Eagles were on top with Hotel California at that time. In fact I believe they were in competition with Fleetwood during Grammys and the AMA's that year. I'm getting the sense that Carol Ann is a bit of a storyteller so I'm not sure how accurate her retelling is. Anyone can clear it up? Thanks.

Re: Eagles opening for Fleetwood Mac in 1977?

I have that book. She's a bit confused. The Eagles never opened for Fleetwood Mac. We actually have a topic on her book here: https://www.eaglesonlinecentral.com/...read.php?t=430
Always in our hearts, Never forgotten
Thanks Soda. I had a feeling someone might have covered this. As I suspected this book IMO is pretty much read with caution. It had so many missing pieces in the story it doesn't make sense but I'll finish reading it just to see how she says it ends.

Sure, this is an old thread, but I gotta set it straight. I saw The Eagles open for Fleetwood Mac in Indianapolis, without question. Yeah, I was suprised as well. But it happened.

Welcome SevevT7 Sadly, in the age of the internet, "I was there" evidence needs some sort of documentative support to be believed

I don't know why it's so unbelievable that the Eagles would open for Fleetwood Mac, especially since the author wrote that it was for "a small part of the Rumours tour" (although I'm not sure what she means by that-- for a few dates?). FM was huge at that time. Not only did their album hit #1 just like Hotel California, it spent 199 weeks in the charts vs. 108 for HC. I'm not disputing what anyone says here, I'm just saying it is feasible that for logistical or whatever reasons, the Eagles could have opened for FM a few times. I guess I also feel badly for someone whose first post gets met with outright skepticism.

I tend to agree that it is unlikely that the Eagles ever opened for Fleetwood Mac. In 1976/1977, both of these bands were huge so if they played together, it was probably as a shared headliner billing. I did a web search and found very little, but even what I did find is conflicting info. So, it's no wonder that there is confusion and misinformation. This excerpt claims that the two bands only played together once in Foxboro, MA in July, 1976 with no mention of the billing: If you know your music history, the two have only ever played together once, on July 25, 1976, at Schaefer Stadium in Foxboro, MA. The Eagles had just released their now-iconic greatest hits album and Fleetwood Mac were touring behind their second eponymous album, with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who at the time were new members! There’s a little rock history for you. http://consequenceofsound.net/2009/1...ay-it-aint-so/ And then, this obituary for Glenn earlier this year claims that Fleetwood Mac actually opened for the Eagles in Pittsburgh in 1976: Another two years later, after scoring two chart-topping hits — “One of These Nights” (the title track to their first No. 1 album) and “The Best of My Love” — plus “Lyin’ Eyes” and “Take it to the Limit,” the Eagles were big enough to headline Three Rivers Stadium in 1976 before 37,000-plus with openers Fleetwood Mac and Boz Scaggs. They were sporting a new guitarist for that one, Joe Walsh from the James Gang, who brought an additional rock edge to the band. http://www.post-gazette.com/ae/music...s/201601180156
"People don't run out of dreams: People just run out of time ..." Glenn Frey 11/06/1948 - 01/18/2016
Thank you for the info, Dreamer. I thought I read somewhere that FM opened for the Eagles at some point (it may have been the linked article you provided). A shared headliner billing makes sense.
They did play together as co-headliners a couple of times - could you maybe have seen them at a festival or something, SevevT7? Welcome, BTW!

The Eagles and Fleetwood Mac to tour? Say it ain’t so!

Go ahead and say this out loud: “Yeah, I’m going to see Fleetwood Mac and The Eagles next week”. You’ve always wanted to say it and now that musical fantasy could be making its way to a stadium near you, and in no time at all.

According to LiveDaily.com , the proposal for the tour has been submitted to stadium and arena operators and promoters across the country for a U.S. summer tour. While nothing is definite, given the recent success of U2, who were able to pack 70,000+ seat venues, and the likes of Madonna and The Police, things look promising. Plus, this is the Eagles and Fleetwood Mac we’re talking about!

The tour would see the band take on baseball and football stadiums, either in single or multiple nights. If you know your music history, the two have only ever played together once, on July 25, 1976, at Schaefer Stadium in Foxboro, MA. The Eagles had just released their now-iconic greatest hits album and Fleetwood Mac were touring behind their second eponymous album, with Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, who at the time were new members! There’s a little rock history for you.

In other news, Fleetwood Mac recently finished up a European tour in November and saw the re-release of its own greatest hits package, The Very Best of Fleetwood Mac , in October. Meanwhile, The Eagles last toured in July 2009 (though they do have three dates already scheduled next April), and their Wal-Mart-only issued Long Road Out of Eden , their first studio album since 1979’s The Long Run, stormed the charts in 2007, working off of singles “How Long” and “Busy Being Fabulous”. Needless to say, these two acts “still got it.”

We’ll keep you updated once the tour stops teasing us and delivers some actual dates.

The Eagles 2010 Tour Dates: 04/16 – Hollywood, CA @ Hollywood Bowl 04/17 – Hollywood, CA @ Hollywood Bowl 04/18 – Hollywood, CA @ Hollywood Bowl

Slash Had to Cold Call Chris Stapleton to Sing on His Blues Album

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

When Slash was putting together the track list for his upcoming blues album, Orgy of the Damned , he had a very distinct voice in mind for his version of Fleetwood Mac’s “Oh Well”: Chris Stapleton .

“His singing cadence and that drawl that he has for this particular song, in my mind’s eye, it sounded perfect,” the Guns N’ Roses guitarist tells Rolling Stone .

But despite Stapleton having opened some shows for GN’R, Slash didn’t already have a relationship with the country crooner. “I had to get his number and cold call him,” Slash says. “And he was really gracious about it and really bent over backwards to help me get it done.”

Dickey Betts, Allman Brothers Band Singer-Guitarist, Dead at 80

Quentin tarantino scraps film 'the movie critic,' which would've been his last, trump forced to see mean memes about him shared by prospective jurors, kelly clarkson's ex-husband denies 'every allegation' after lawsuit over $2.6 million ruling.

Due May 17, Orgy of the Damned finds Slash teaming up with Billy Gibbons, Iggy Pop, Demi Lovato, and more. The first single, Howlin’ Wolf’s “Killing Floor” features AC/DC howler Brian Johnson on vocals and Aerosmith’s Steven Tyler on harmonica. Slash will re-create the album with various special guests on a summer tour he’s calling the S.E.R.P.E.N.T. festival.
