Sambit Patra named as chairman of India Tourism Development Corporation

Sambit Patra has been appointed as the chairman of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet. IAS officer, G. Kamala Vardhana Rao will hold the post of managing director of ITDC. The India Tourism Development Corporation is a hospitality, retail, and education company owned by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Tourism. Earlier, Patra had served as an independent Director of ONGC.

BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra was on Wednesday appointed as the chairman of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

According to an official order, the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) has approved the Tourism Ministry’s proposal to split the post of chairman and managing director of India Tourism Development Corporation into chairman, ITDC, and managing director (MD), ITDC.

IAS officer, GKV Rao will hold the post of managing director of ITDC.

“ACC has approved the proposals of the Ministry of Tourism of splitting of the post of Chairman and Managing Director (CMD), India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC) into two posts of Chairman, ITDC and Managing Director (MD) ITDC; Appointment of Dr Sambit Patra as Part-Time Non-Executive Director and Chairman of ITDC for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge, or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” the order stated.

It also continued the tenure of 1990 batch IAS officer Ganji Kamala V. Rao to the post of MD, ITDC, till further orders.

Earlier, Patra had served as an independent director of ONGC.

India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC)

ITDC came into existence in October 1966 and has been the prime mover in the progressive development, promotion and expansion of tourism in the country. Broadly, the main objectives of the Corporation are:

• To construct, take over and manage existing hotels and market hotels, Beach Resorts, Travellers’ Lodges/Restaurants;
• To provide transport, entertainment, shopping and conventional services;
• To produce, distribute, tourist publicity material;
• To render consultancy-cum-managerial services in India and abroad;
• To carry on the business as Full-Fledged Money Changers (FFMC), restricted money changers etc;
• To provide innovating, dependable and value for money solutions to the needs of tourism development and engineering industry including providing consultancy and project implementation.

The authorized capital of the Corporation is Rs 75 Crore and the paid up capital as on 31.3.2005 was Rs 67.52 Crore. 89.9748% of the paid up equity capital of the Corporation is held in the name of President of India.

The Corporation is running hotels, restaurants at various places for tourists, besides providing transport facilities. In addition, the Corporation is engaged in production, distribution and sale of tourist publicity literature and providing entertainment and duty free shopping facilities to the tourists. The Corporation has diversified into new avenues/innovative services like Full-Fledged Money Changer (FFMC) services, engineering related consultancy services etc. The Ashok Institute of Hospitality & Tourism Management of the Corporation imparts training and education in the field of tourism and hospitality.

Presently, ITDC has a network of eight Ashok Group of Hotels, six Joint Venture Hotels, 2 Restaurants (including one Airport Restaurant), 12 Transport Units, one Tourist Service Station, 37 Duty Free Shops at International as well as Domestic Customs Airports, one Tax Free outlet and two Sound & Light Shows.

Besides, ITDC is also managing a hotel at Bharatpur and a restaurant at Kosi on behalf of the Department of Tourism. In addition, it is also managing catering services at Western Court, Vigyan Bhawan, Hyderabad House and National Media Press Centre at Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi.

G Kamala Vardhana Rao is New Chairman & Managing Director of ITDC

New Delhi:  G Kamala Vardhana Rao IAS, an officer in the 1990 batch, Kerala Cadre has been appointed as the Chairman & Managing Director (C&MD) of India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC). Before assuming the office at ITDC, Rao was designated as the Principal Secretary, Government of Kerala. Rao also served as the Secretary of Kerala Tourism in the year 2014-15.

In a span of close to three decades, Rao has served multiple positions including Chairman of Indian Tobacco Board; Director of Fisheries Department; Director, Department of Tourism & Culture, Government of Andhra Pradesh; Managing Director of SC/ST Corporation in Andhra Pradesh; the Revenue Secretary of Kerala; and the District Collector, Kollam, Kerala

ITDC was incorporated in 1966 with a mandate to develop and expand tourism infrastructure in the country. The corporation has been moving ahead with consistent efforts on development, growth and world-class services and amenities to its guests.

Apart from running hotels, the ITDC has diversified into non-hotel sectors like ticketing, tours and travels, event management, duty-free shopping, publicity and printing consultancy, engineering consultancy, mounting sound and light shows, hospitality education, and skill development.

India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), a Mini Ratna public sector undertaking under the aegis of the ministry of tourism, announced another astounding financial performance for the quarter ending June 30, 2023, achieving the highest-ever turnover and profit in comparison with the first quarter of the past six years. The company achieved a turnover of INR 121.83 crore in Q1 2023-24 as compared to INR 98.40 crore in Q1 2022-23 – registering a growth of 24 percent.
