Hailing from Brooklyn, New York, US, Lucius are an indie-pop act known for their three-pronged vocal attack full of luscious harmonies, infections melodies and tantalisingly danceable rhythms.

The beginnings of the band were formed at the Berklee School of Music, after the two students, Jesse Wolfe (vocals) and Holly Laessig became friends and started performing together. After graduating, they moved to Brooklyn, US to try develop their music careers, going on to meeting the other members of the band, Dan Molad (drums), Peter Lalish (guitar) and Andrew Burri (guitar) and forming Lucius. The two vocalists, when house hunting, stumbled upon a 60 year old recording studio and former music school, Bromley House, with this building becoming the base from which Lucius was to grow and find its sound.

Quickly in their career, Lucius gathered many plaudits, praised for their innovative and sumptuous indie-pop that melds americana-folk with 60s-pop all delivered with their beautifully balanced and constructed harmonies. They manage to create a big sound, full of reverb and driving percussion with instantly memorable melodies.

The band signed to Mom + Pop Music and released their debut album, “Wilderwoman” in October 2013. The album was released in the UK/Europe, Australia and Japan by the Play It Again Sam record label. Media outlets such as the New York Times NPR and The Guardian have al sung the band’s praises since the album’s release, deemed by Rolling Stone as “the best band you may not have heard yet.” Comparisons have been made to their sound with Neko Case, Blanche, Cults and Arcade Fire. Their impressive live show is full of energy and charisma, with their performance at South by Southwest Festival in Austin Texas in 2014 gaining many new fans and drawing significant interest towards the five-piece.

Lucius at the Beachland Ballroom 3/35/16

The Ballroom was filling up by the time the opening act, Pure Bathing Culture, played their 2nd song and we walked in. Lucius’ third show in support of their new record “Good Grief” sold out the Beachland Ballroom and served as a home-coming for Holly Lessig. My fiance and I have long been craving our ear candy that is Lucius, as we hadn’t had our fix since 2014 at the Bowery. Our Uber dropped us off just as the opening act took stage, but being my first trip to the BB&L, I took in all the sights, sounds and smells of the aging venue. The house was small (500 capacity), not overcrowded for a sell-out, security lax and the people friendly. The merch table did not feature any unique posters for this show, just Good Grief tour posters (bummer) and nothing else new to purchase so I didn’t linger long. On the bar side, someone spun records pre, post and during the concert, while the fans came and went sucking up the $5 cans of Goose Island IPA. The crowd was a mix of 16 year old girls, hipsters and hipster-yuppies in their 40’s and 50’s. I typically love age-diverse crowds, but this group of fans were too cool to dance… and that sucked. At one point of the night, Jess actually thanked “those of you who actually danced.” It is also the first show that I have EVER attended that I didn’t smell one joint being smoked. Not that THC and other substances weren’t consumed at this Lucius show, they were, but vape pens have forever altered the olfactory experience at concerts. PBC did an apt job at warming up the crowd and had a few people bobbing their heads saying, “pretty good… they sound fantastic… who are they again?” Lucius took the stage at approximately 9:45 and opened with Dusty Trails, they followed that up with Tempest. They sprinkled in old and new songs and stayed close to the setlist they have had the first two tour dates. Emotions came bubbling over during the first song of the encore, Two of Us on the Run. Holly (playing a hometown show) pushed back tears and, I assume, a multitude of emotions as the band performed a special rendition of the song. I’ll always think of a particularly tender moment between Jess & Holly during the song when listening to TOUOTR. The best moments came with Genevieve/ Better Look Back and with thier cover the We Five’s You Were On My Mind . The energy and synergy between Jess/Holly/the rest of the band was amazing. I personally thought that Andy seemed to be a little distant and bored. He wore shades nearly the entire set but did take a panoramic photo of the fans before leaving the stage at the close of the performance. Lucius’ overall sound and musicianship are as good as any touring band. At the start of this tour, the band seems fresh, lively and professional, however, I can’t help but feel that cracks may be forming for one of my favorite bands. There is a feeling/vibe/aura that maybe the band continuing to grow… maybe their ambition is evolving… what they thought they wanted, no longer feels as important… their confidence, skill and artistic vision seem higher than ever before, but something feels like this special 5-piece may not be around forever as one whole. However, I hope I am dead wrong. Lucius are one of my favorite bands and I hope that one day I get to take a road trip to watch their Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame induction performance with Jeff Tweedy or Jim James giving their introduction speech. Wednesday 20th August. The Lexington. Lucius. Two trips in the space of a week to the Lexington and 23rd gig of the year. Shaping up to be a great year on the live music scene. Me and my good lady tonight as my usual gig buddies were not interested. So the conversation usually goes “Darling, fancy a night out in London” “Ooh that would be nice” “Well I’ve got us a tickets for a great new band you wouldn’t have heard of” “Ok then”. So it’s off to Islington. After a swift one in the Wetherspoons at the Angel it’s off for some tapas along Upper Street. I am really looking forward to this gig as I love the album, its pure pop. For those who don't know them Lucius are a five piece band from Brooklyn fronted by two platinum blonde singers who play a variety of instruments throughout the night ranging from cowbells, synths and drums. In fact the whole band all appear to have a drum as one of their instruments which for a frustrated drummer like me is no bad thing. The three lookalike guys that complete the band exude cool rock chic which I think comes from being in a band that is clearly on the way up demonstrated by this sold out show and their return to these shores in October to a venue three times the size. We do our best to blend in with the uber trendy Islington set that are here tonight and luckily I spy a couple of old timers that make me feel better. The band hit the stage with the girls in a blur of blond hair, matching dresses and begin to beat the bejesus out of their drums and cow bells for the opening number. I am hooked from the first note. It’s a twin vocal lead on every song with their voices complementing each other perfectly. The harmonies are further enhanced by all three of the guys and the sound is spot on all evening. They rattle through their debut album in the next forty minutes and I’m in power pop heaven. Clear highlights for me were Wildewoman and Turn it Around which starts with some heaving had clapping from the whole venue and segues into a couple of choruses of Whitney’s I want to dance with somebody which we duly oblige. Band exit stage right and we wait for them to return and they do, not on stage but into the middle of the audience a foot away from us armed with only two acoustic guitars, a drum (obviously) and two beautiful voices. It’s a spine tingling performance of Two of Us on the Run and it’s a joy to watch five musicians at the top of their game in perfect harmony. We leave in good spirits with Anne thoroughly enjoying the night. Gig of the year contender. Absolutely.

A live act like Lucius is rare indeed. Musically, they are so tight, so razor sharp, they border perfection. I was reminded of so many great bands last night--fleetwood mac, the mamas and papas, crosby, stills, and nash...the harmonies were so mind-blowing. They are down-to-earth, warm, gracious, and each band member is so, so, SO talented. At last night's show, they orchestrated an elaborate lie in order to help someone propose marriage on stage--which brought the house down. They were angels about it. The songwriting, the clap-alongs, the quirky costumes, and couldn't-be-more-real talent of Holly and Jess was one of the more memorable and enjoyable musical experiences I've had in a long time. If you ever have the chance to see this band, DO NOT HESITATE.

An incredible show in an already classic and majestic venue. The acoustic of the Union Chapel set the perfect atmosphere to host the stunning voices of Lucius that were complemented with slightly softer strings than usual to fit the promotion of their latest acoustic album.

As a bonus to the show, towards the end they invited Roger Waters on stage for him to sing "Mother" (Pink Floyd cover) and "Goodnight, Irene" (included in the album).

This was an incredible show that provided a more delicate and deeper tune of the band than the one shown in the previous shows some years ago (Koko, Camden).

Looking forward to the next chance to see them performing.

The Portland show on 11/18/15 was my first Lucius show but I've been a big fan of theirs pretty much since they released their first album years ago. I knew they would be good live because I've seen some recorded live performances on the Internet. They were so much better than I could've ever gathered from live recordings! Just phenomenol. I've never seen a band act with such synchronicity, it's seriously impressive, and their voices sounded amazing, almost more polished than the vocals on the studio recordings, which were already very polished. Just amazing. Can't wait until the new record comes out!

Really amazing show. Not just songs, but also costume changes. They started out in these custom pale pink dresses and capes, and then changed into black fringed outfits halfway through. They sang while walking through the crowd, and walked right up next to the barricade. Beautiful voices, wonderful night. Would recommend to and everyone. Merch was SO COOL and priced very reasonably. They played their old album and their new one, probably 60-40? They played for two hours, and never lost energy.

Sadly due to a thunderstorm and a broken down tour bus, the show was first delayed an hour to 8pm and then after the opening act finished their set, it was deemed too much of a risk for the band and the show was cancelled with a claim of rescheduling. It was completely understandable and although slightly disappointed, I would rather have missed the show than have the members of Lucius be shocked by their equipment continuously and risk their health.

I loved the vocal oriented, Appalachian feeling songs. The vocal interplay between the 2 singers is incredible.

Seeing 4 people on stage drumming at the same time was fun too. Could do without some of the 80's style dance pop.

Very good performers. All in all an enjoyable show.

Absolutely amazing show! The harmonies will blow you away live. Every song was an adventure and an experience, and a great mix of new tracks and classic old ones. You will not be able to stop talking about this show for weeks after it's done!

They gave a truly amazing show! They performed every song with so much energy and sang even better than their recordings. I would definitely go to see them again. The venue was cool too, because it was smaller so we were right up front. :)

Listen: Lucius Team Up With The War On Drugs’ Adam Granduciel For “Old Tape,” with Video Featuring Fred Armisen

Lucius and The War on Drugs’ Adam Granduciel have teamed up “Old Tape,” the latest collaborative single from the indie vanguards that precedes their departure on the Zen Diagram tour. Arriving as Lucius’ first new material since 2023, this cut follows a similar feature from Lucius on The War On Drugs’ “I Don’t Live Here Anymore,” released on the group’s 2021 record of the same name. To accompany the new single, the musicians have shared a music video starring comedian and musical multi-hyphenate Fred Armisen, with direction from Lauren Wade.

Featuring lyrics from Lucius’ Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig, electric guitar from Granduciel, and vocals from the now well-acquainted trio, “Old Tape” tracks the experience of a negative thought spiral. Wolfe and Laessig melodically ruminate, “The sorry words I tell myself / The ancient thoughts of someone else.” Yet, even when “you turn up the dial…/ to an old tape playing in my head,” Lucius vows to “tune it out and live instead.” In the video, Armisen manifests this process with a walk through endless white rooms as if lost in his mind. When Wolfe and Laessig join Armisen and take to dance, instead, the liberative message of the song rings clearly.

Lucius will stage two shows across the pond in London and Dublin on Aug. 21 and 22 before kicking off the Zen Diagram Tour with The National and The War on Drugs with a Sept. 12 performance at Gilford, N.H.’s Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion. Following evenings in New York, Massachusetts, Maryland, Ohio and Pennsylvania, as well as Laval and Toronto and Vancouver, Lucius is set to play at Louisville, Ky.’s Bourbon & Beyond Festival on Sept. 22. The fall promises another trek across the Midwestern, Southern, and Western U.S. alongside The National and The War on Drugs, with the Zen Diagram tour set to conclude at Los Angeles’ Hollywood Bowl on Oct. 7.

Bourbon & Beyond releases its 2024 lineup: Who's performing at the bourbon music festival?

Bourbon & Beyond , the world's largest bourbon and music festival, returns Sept. 19-22, at the Highland Festival Grounds at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville, this time with two additional stages and 40 additional musical acts than years past.

The celebration of music and whiskey is known for offering dozens of specialty bars and exciting musical performances across four days. This year, 100 musical acts will perform at the festival, including headliners  Sting  and  Beck  on Thursday,  Dave Matthews Band  and  Tedeschi Trucks Band  on Friday,  Zach Bryan  and  Cody Jinks  on Saturday, and  Tyler Childers  and  My Morning Jacket  on Sunday, along with Matchbox Twenty, The National, Whiskey Myers, Black Pumas, Fleet Foxes, The War On Drugs, Mt. Joy, The Beach Boys, Young the Giant, Maren Morris, The Head and the Heart, Melissa Etheridge, Teddy Swims, and more.

Being able to celebrate hometown heroes, My Morning Jacket and Kentucky’s own, Tyler Childers, this year's Bourbon & Beyond lineup is truly a career highlight for me," Danny Wimmer of Danny Wimmer Presents said in a news release.. "We can’t wait to see everyone this September to celebrate the pure magic of this festival and the great city of Louisville.”

In addition to four full days of music on five stages at Bourbon & Beyond, the festival experience will include daily workshops and demonstrations hosted by Chris Blandford, Amanda Freitag, Ed Lee, and Chris Santos — pairing world-renowned master distillers and celebrity chefs with guest artist appearances and a who’s who of Kentucky personalities, as well as a variety of additional onsite experiences, according to the news release.

Bourbon & Beyond and DWP’s Louisville companion festival, Louder Than Life, which takes place the followingweekend, generated millions in local economic impact in 2023, and drew more than 300,000 attendees, according to the news release.

The four-day music and bourbon festival is held at the Highland Festival Grounds at the Kentucky Exposition Center, 937 Phillips Lane in Louisville.  

Is Bourbon & Beyond free?

The festival is not free. Tickets are currently available at  bourbonandbeyond.com .

How much is general admission vs. VIP passes?

Single-day general admission passes are $109.99 plus fees. Four-day general admission weekend packages range in price from $269.99 plus fees. Prices typically increase closer to the festival date.

VIP passes, which include special viewing areas for the main stages, dedicated bars and merchandise stands and premium food offerings, are $229.99 plus fees for a single-day pass and $689.99 plus fees for a weekend pass. A Beyond VIP pass, which includes a viewing area in front of the main stage, complimentary Wi-Fi and all-inclusive beer and wine options throughout the VIP area, is available for $1,699.99 plus fees.

Combination passes for Bourbon & Beyond and  Louder Than Life , held Sept. 26-29 ,  are also available.

What else can I do at Bourbon & Beyond?

Another highlight of the festival is the Kroger Big Bourbon Bar. Featuring bluegrass bands, line dancing and expertly curated picks of Kentucky’s finest, the bourbon trail is coming right to Bourbon & Beyond. Bourbon lovers can also stop by Chris Picks MiniBar for select single barrels curated especially for Bourbon & Beyond; The Hunter’s Club for rare and vintage sips; and the Tiki Barrel Bar for the perfect oasis to make the festival vacation complete. In addition to select bourbon experiences, fans can enjoy other cocktail offerings at Blackened Presents, The Whiskey Bar, according to the news release.

Mitski at All Points East 2024: set times, schedule and lineup

Ethel Cain, Beabadoobee and Arlo Parks are also on the bill for Sunday at Victoria Park

Mitski last played London just a few short months ago, selling out four nights at the Hammersmith Apollo in May in a flash. Clearly the capital’s appetite for the American popstar wasn’t satiated: she’s back this weekend headlining All Points East .

Victoria Park will host Mitski’s first ever headline performance – yep, first ever,  anywhere – and you can bet she’ll live up to the hype. Armed with a mighty catalogue loaded with hits, Mitski’s live shows are massively theatrical and hugely entertaining. She’s supported by the likes of Ethel Cain, Beabadoobee, Arlo Parks and TV Girl.

Sunday (August 18) sees Mitski close out the first weekend of Uber One presents All Points East 2024. She follows Kaytranada on Friday August 16 and Loyle Carner on Saturday August 17 – next week APE will be headlined by LCD Soundsystem and Death Cab For Cutie / Postal Service.

Day 5: Trial for Northland Mall security guards charged in 2014 death of McKenzie Cochran

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – The trial for three security guards facing manslaughter charges in the 2014 death of McKenzie Cochran at Northland Mall in Southfield will continue Friday, Aug. 23.

A jury was seated Monday, Aug. 19, and the trial began shortly after. On the first day, they heard from Phillip Borka, a paramedic who responded to the Northland Mall , before being dismissed.

The prosecution rested Thursday after four days of witnesses. The defense is expected to wrap their case Friday.

Here’s what we know:

The guards -- Lucius Hamilton, John Seiberling, Gaven King, and Aaron Maree -- reportedly held down 25-year-old McKenzie Cochran. He reportedly was asked to leave the mall after an employee said he had been acting suspiciously around a jewelry store. Cochran was pepper sprayed and pinned to the floor.

Witnesses said Cochran repeatedly told the guards, “I can’t breathe,” during the struggle. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said he could not breathe because of the way he was positioned on the ground.

Once handcuffed, the guards noticed Cochran was unresponsive and contacted EMS. Attempts to revive him at the mall were unsuccessful . Cochran was declared dead shortly after being taken to a hospital.

In 2014, then Oakland County Prosecutor Jessica Cooper did not pursue criminal charges and said there was no intention to kill and no chokeholds were done by the security guards. In 2020, Cochran’s family asked Southfield police chief Elvin Barren to review the case a second time. Barren decided to send it to the Attorney General’s Office.

The four security guards were charged with one count of involuntary manslaughter in 2021 . The development came seven years after the former Oakland County Prosecutor did not pursue criminal charges.

October 2021: ‘Delayed justice’ -- 4 charged years after man’s death at Northland Mall

Hamilton pleaded guilty Friday, Aug. 16, after the judge said she would likely favor a 90-day jail sentence in October. A fifth security guard -- who was the initial guard who engaged with Cochran -- died in 2017.

Defense lawyers said the guards acted in self-defense.
