Creating a space for nurses to thrive.

Northern Medical Connections is a preferred Canadian travel nurse agency, proudly based in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Our mission is to connect nurses to job opportunities across Canada where they feel valued, supported & safe.

Woman standing in nature with open space

Started by Nurses. For Nurses.

Northern Med is a very different kind of agency. Unlike most travel nurse agencies, Northern Med was founded by an RN who has over 10 years experience working as a travel nurse across Canada - our founder Matthew Jurcina. Matthew loved being a travel nurse, but after years in the industry he knew there had to be a better way; dreaming of an agency that vetted placements in-person before sending in new nurses, where staff could support you both clinically & administratively, and where quality patient-care & work-life balance were the top two priorities. ‍‍ So, in between shifts and placements Matthew started building Northern Med - eventually bringing together a dream team of staff; nurses to help with the clinical perspective, experts in healthcare administration to work with health authorities across the country, and HR pros to handle the high volume of placements and staff. The result has been Northern Med becoming one of Canada's topnotch Travel Nursing Agencies, recruiting healthcare professionals who are falling in love with nursing again!

A team you can trust.

We care about patient care.

Northern Med truly cares about seeing our nurses deliver exemplary patient care . It is a top priority for our agency. We believe the best way to guarantee strong health outcomes is to take incredible care of our nurses so that they can take incredible care of their patients.

Well, we're done with that. Time to take back control of your life AND your career. Northern Med is here to help.

We bring everything to the table.

Our dream team is made of up an incredibly diverse and balanced group of people - with mixed professional backgrounds in nursing, human resources, business administration, and healthcare management.

Travel Nursing in the Yukon.

The Yukon is a land of untamed wilderness and breathtaking beauty. With its towering mountains, pristine rivers, and expansive forests, the Yukon offers an unparalleled escape into nature's embrace.

travel nursing in yukon

The Yukon's rich history, steeped in the allure of the Klondike Gold Rush, adds a sense of adventure and exploration to the region. The Northern Lights dance across its night skies, enchanting visitors with their mystical glow. Home to diverse wildlife and Indigenous cultures, the Yukon welcomes those seeking awe-inspiring landscapes, outdoor adventures, and a deep connection to the wild.

Here are 10 ideas to worth looking into during your Yukon adventure:

H ike the trails: The Yukon boasts an abundance of hiking trails, catering to hikers of all skill levels. Whether you prefer short day hikes or longer backcountry treks, you'll be rewarded with breathtaking vistas of rugged mountains, pristine lakes, and lush forests. The famous Chilkoot Trail, once a part of the Klondike Gold Rush, offers a historical and challenging hike. Tombstone Territorial Park, with its unique tundra landscapes, presents an awe-inspiring experience.

Canoe or kayak the rivers: Paddling along the Yukon River or its tributaries provides an unparalleled opportunity to connect with nature. Glide through serene waters, surrounded by majestic mountains and abundant wildlife. The tranquility of the Yukon's waterways allows you to immerse yourself in the natural world and experience a sense of peace and adventure simultaneously.

Northern Lights viewing: The Yukon is one of the best places on Earth to witness the mesmerizing Northern Lights, also known as the Aurora Borealis. From late fall to early spring, the night sky comes alive with swirling ribbons of green, purple, and pink lights dancing across the horizon. It's an otherworldly spectacle that leaves a lasting impression on all who have the chance to see it.

Wildlife watching: The Yukon is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. You may encounter bears, moose, caribou, wolves, and a variety of bird species in their natural habitats. Keep a safe distance and be respectful of these animals while appreciating their beauty and importance in the ecosystem.

Gold panning: Relive the excitement of the Klondike Gold Rush by trying your hand at gold panning. Many streams and rivers still carry traces of gold, and you can join guided tours to learn the techniques used by prospectors of the past. It's an enjoyable and educational activity that connects you to the region's history.

Visit national parks: The Yukon is home to several spectacular national parks that showcase the region's pristine wilderness. Kluane National Park and Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers opportunities for mountaineering, backcountry camping, and awe-inspiring glacier views. Ivvavik National Park, located in the northernmost part of the Yukon, provides a unique experience of remote Arctic landscapes and cultural richness.

Attend festivals and events: The Yukon's vibrant community celebrates its culture through various festivals and events. The Yukon Quest, an iconic dog sled race, brings together mushers and their teams to compete in a challenging and historic event. Music festivals like the Dawson City Music Festival offer a chance to enjoy live performances from talented artists in a picturesque setting.

Soak in hot springs: After days of outdoor adventures, unwind and rejuvenate in the soothing waters of natural hot springs. The Takhini Hot Pools near Whitehorse are popular for their warm temperatures and relaxing atmosphere, providing the perfect opportunity to bond with fellow travelers and locals.

Learn about First Nations culture: The Yukon is home to diverse Indigenous communities, each with its distinct culture and traditions. Engage in cultural centers and activities to gain insights into their history, art, music, and spiritual practices. Participating in workshops and guided tours led by First Nations members can be an enriching and respectful way to learn about their heritage.

Drive the Dempster Highway: Embark on a road trip along the Dempster Highway, a legendary route that stretches from the Yukon to the Arctic Circle. The journey takes you through stunning landscapes, including the Tombstone Mountains and the Richardson Mountains. Camping along the way allows you to fully appreciate the untamed beauty of the Yukon's wilderness.

Remember that the Yukon's wilderness can be challenging, so always be well-prepared with proper gear, clothing, and knowledge of the area. Respect nature and wildlife, and follow Leave No Trace principles to preserve the environment for future generations of travelers to enjoy.

Canadian military doctors, nurses to begin work in Yukon hospitals

Canadian military doctors and nurses will soon begin working in the Yukon's public health-care system, as the territory grapples with a health-care worker shortage.

The military medical personnel will provide their skills and expertise to support the health of Yukoners, while also maintaining and enhancing their skills, according to the government.

A joint press release from cabinet and  the Yukon Hospital Corporation (YHC) said the plan is one of several initiatives created thanks to a special Yukon health services steering committee. The group was created to try and address the territory's "health human resource challenges" stemming from a global shortage of healthcare workers.

It's being touted as a win-win situation, with proponents saying it's not about fixing a shortage.

"This is a partnership focused around continuing education," said Stefanie Ralph, executive director of nursing at YHC.

Yukon staff will be able to learn from experienced military medical personnel, while military staff learn about the North and keep their skills current, she said.

"This initiative isn't about filling gaps."

According the government, the Canadian Forces Health Services professionals will work in settings such as critical care, emergency room, operating room, and medical-surgical roles throughout the territory.

Increasing the pool

Minister of Health and Social Services Tracy-Anne McPhee said the program will increase the territory's pool of Canadian health-care professionals who have experience in Yukon communities.

"By encouraging short-term education-focused tours of work across our health-care system, we can continue to ensure Yukoners have access to quality care," she said in the press release.

"Canadian Forces Health Services health professionals will be able to maintain existing and learn new clinical skills while helping Yukoners receive high-quality health care," she added.

But Yukon Party MLA Brad Cathers, the opposition health critic, is critical of the program. He says it's a sign of the Yukon Liberal Party's desperation.

"If calling in the military isn't a sign there is a problem, [then] I don't know what is," he said during question period in the legislature.

McPhee replied saying she rejected the idea that the program comes from a place of desperation and said frontline healthcare workers in the Yukon came up with the idea.

Arctic security

Amid global tensions, the Canadian military is trying to step up its presence in the North, and defence officials say this program will enhance national security.

Minister of National Defence Bill Blair said it will boost the military's "readiness" to deliver care in the North.

"A strong understanding of territorial health care service delivery is vital to operations as we increase the Canadian Armed Forces' presence in the Arctic," he said in the press release.

The military medical staff will be stationed at hospitals in Whitehorse, Watson Lake and Dawson City.
