We have included a number of sample itineraries on our website and each has been given a guide price which is based on a specific departure date and is subject to the availability of flights and accommodation.The prices shown are per person based on two people travelling together and sharing a twin or double room throughout.The price includes international flights to and from the UK, local and international flights in the Far East, accommodation, transfers and land transportation, guide, driver, entrance and boat fees and meals as described.The price does not include visa fees, airport departure taxes, tips or any personal expenses.

The Vietnamese trace their beginnings to legendary kings that ruled nearly 5000 years ago, making the Vietnamese culture one of the oldest distinct cultures on Southeast Asia. Over thousands of years, this distinct culture has been influenced by neighbouring and ruling cultures as well, including the Chinese, Cham, Khmer and French, among others. Visitors to Vietnam can see an overall unifying Vietnamese culture throughout the country, with regional unique features in different areas.

Festivals & Events

Some of the most interesting vietnamese festivals are unique to small localities. when planning to travel to vietnam, contact your travel consultant to see if any local festivals will occur during your itinerary. some of the larger festivals in vietnam are celebrated nationwide:.

+ Tet: Also known as the Lunar New Year, Tet usually falls between mid-January and mid-February. This is the largest and most important Vietnamese holiday when people travel to their hometowns and many businesses close for several days. There is a special festive atmosphere in the air during Tet. + Vu Lan: This festival is when Vietnamese people honour their parents, especially their mothers, whether living or deceased. The date is on the 15th day of the 7th lunar month. + Mid-Autumn Festival: The hallmarks of this festival, called Tet Trung Thu in Vietnam, are colourful paper lanterns, mooncakes and lion dancing. With such exciting activities, children especially enjoy this holiday. It falls in the middle of the 8th lunar month, and is also a time for families to spend time together drinking tea and eating sweet mooncakes.

Health & Safety

In general, there are no serious health or safety risks when traveling in Vietnam. However, it never hurts to take precautions. Please consult your healthcare provider to see if they recommend any vaccinations or other medications when traveling. In large cities and other crowded areas, be mindful of your belongings such as cameras, mobile phones and wallets/purses.

The Vietnamese Dong (VND) is pegged to the US Dollar and the current exchange rate is 1 US Dollar = 23,200 VND (as of February 2020). ATMs are widely available in all cities and many of them work with overseas ATM cards. Some larger hotels and shops accept credit cards, and this method of payment is becoming more common. Keep in mind that some merchants may charge small fee and that international transaction fees may apply.

Post & Communications

The Vietnamese postal system can mail letters and postcards worldwide for less than $2 US. International shipping companies such as FedEx, UPS and DHL are available in Vietnam as well if there is a need to ship something quickly. SIM cards for mobile phones are cheap and widely available. Short term data packages for mobile phones are very inexpensive and easy to set up. Get in touch with your travel consultant to arrange a SIM if you wish to use your mobile phone upon arrival.

Travel Formalities

A visa is required for entry into Vietnam and the regular tourist visa is valid for up to 30 days from the date of the first arrival date in Vietnam. + Tourist Visa exemption is available for passport holders from some Southeast Asian countries including Thailand, Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Singapore and Laos are exempted from visa when entering Vietnam. Vietnam also has a visa exemption for Japanese, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and Finnish citizens. Passport holders from these countries can travel to Vietnam up to 15 days without applying for tourist visas. + There are two kinds of tourist visas. The first, Vietnam Associates (VNAS) for Australians can assist and expedite obtaining, or, you can contact direct to the Vietnamese Embassy in Canberra or the Consulate in Sydney. The cost whether you obtain a tourist visa from us or direct is AU$95.00 per person per visa for a Single Entry Tourist Visa, however if you are stopping in Vietnam more than once then a Multiple Entry Tourist Visa is required and costs AU$150.00. + The second is a Tourist Visa on Arrival which can be obtained at the international airports (Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Danang) on arrival in Vietnam provided that it has been pre-approved by the Immigration Office. VNAS offers visa procurement services for individuals and groups. Approval Letter costs vary and may depend on how long before date of arrival – from US$25.00 pp to US$45.00 pp. To board your flight you must show this Approval Letter before you will be allowed to fly. On arriving at the Vietnam international airport you will need to take your Approval Letter to a “LANDING VISA” counter to fill in a form (a passport photo is required) and obtain your tourist visa (cost approximately US$35.00 pp) before proceeding to Immigration. Please be aware that if there are numerous flights arriving at the same time this process may take one hour or so – as reported by clients. Please be patient. CUSTOMS The basic principle of customs policy in Vietnam is that visitors should enter and exit with the same goods and personal possessions with the following exceptions: Cash amounts greater than US$ 7,000 (formerly US$ 3,000) should be declared upon entry or exit. 1. Souvenirs: Visitors are free to buy products in Vietnam for personal use. The exception to this principle is antiques. Antiques considered of “national interest” will be confiscated without refund or recourse. In general this applies to articles of ancient (over 50 years old) or religious nature. “National interest” is interpreted by an expert at the airport. In cases where a visitor is unsure of the acceptability of the export of any goods purchased, they can check with the Customs Office in either Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi for prior ruling without risk of confiscation 2. To avoid confiscation of goods not purchased, visitors must be sure an accurate description appears on the Customs Declaration form upon arrival. Particular note should be taken of antiques purchased in other countries in the region which might possibly be deemed of Vietnamese origin. Also, extra care should be taken to declare loose gemstones and jewelry. 3. Firearms, narcotics and other internationally prohibited goods are banned and those found in possession of such items are liable to prosecution. Items that you cannot bring into Vietnam include weapons, munitions, explosives and inflammables, firecracker of all kinds, opium and drugs, toxic chemicals, and cultural materials unsuitable to Vietnamese society (pornographic seditious publications, films and photos), harmful child toys. If you break these rules you will be subject to Vietnamese law. AIRPORT TAX Airport tax is already included in the air ticket effective from 1 November 2006. MEET & GREET On exiting the Arrivals Hall, passengers will be met, greeted and welcomed by our partner Viet Aurora Travel whose guide will ne holding holding a VIETNAM ASSOCIATES / Viet Aurora Travel sign. Guests will then proceed to an air-conditioned vehicle for the trip to the hotel.

Vietnam is divided into three regions with different climate and landscapes. As a tropical country, like other Southeast Asian countries, Vietnam possesses two typical seasons: the dry and rainy season. The year-round heat and humidity in the south, especially Ho Chi Minh City, make lightweight quick-dry clothing the most appropriate. The north and central highlands get cool enough for sweaters or light jackets for much of the year but the northern highlands will require cold weather clothes in the winter. 25. How to get to and away Vietnam?

Ho Chi Minh City’s (Saigon) Tan Son Nhat Airport is Vietnam ‘s busiest international air hub, followed by Hanoi ‘s Noi Bai Airpot. A few international flights also serve new Danang International Airport, Phu Quoc International airport.

Singapore, Hongkong and Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur have emerged as the principle embarkation points for Vietnam but it’s still possible to get direct flights from a number of major Asian and European cities and a few American and Australian cities.

There are currently six major international border crossings for travellers coming to Vietnam, but more may open soon. All crossing points suffer from heavy policing and often requests for ‘immigration fees’.

For getting to/ from China, it’s become very popular to cross the border at Friendship Pass or Dong Dang, 20km (12mi) north of Lang Son in northeast Vietnam , to get to/from Namning. There is a twice-weekly international train between Beijing and Hanoi that stops at Friendship Pass. The other popular border crossing with China is at Lao Cai (near Sapa) in northwest Vietnam, which lies on the railway line between Hanoi and Kunming in China ‘s Yunnan Province. There’s also a seldom used crossing at Mong Cai, Quang Ninh Province.

It’s possible to enter Laos from Lao Bao in north-central Vietnam; there’s an international bus from Danang to Savannakhet ( Laos ). The other crossing is at Keo Nua Pass/Cau Treo, west of Vinh or Tay Trang in Dien Bien Phu in the mountainous North Vietnam.

Travellers can cross to Cambodia is via Moc Bai; an international bus links Phnom Penh with Ho Chi Minh City or take a speed boat from Chau Doc to Phnom Penh.

+ Be careful when crossing the roads

Traffic jam is one of the most terrific things that frighten foreigners first time coming to Vietnam. Riding bikes or motorbikes will be such an unforgettable experience. But the story will be more interesting when you try to cross the roads in Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh city. Don’t stop as you cross the busy roads. Frightening as it can be, just keep walking. The traffic will avoid you. Pick a spot across the road, stare at it and keep walking, no matter what.

Overcharging is also one of the most alarming problems of foreigners first time traveling to Vietnam as locals always think that foreigners are rich. When walking on streets in Vietnam, especially big cities like Ho Chi Minh City, if you wear a lot of jewelry like rings or even make a phone call, you will be a target for pickpockets or robbers. Also when you can’t speak Vietnamese, it will be such a challenge to ask people surrounding you to help you.

+ Express the affection of lovers in public. 

Western culture encourages or allows people to be free to show their love or affection. By contrast, it is impolite in Eastern culture countries, like in Vietnam.  You can see couples holding hands, but they will not kiss when many people can see that. Thus, avoid kissing your friends or lovers in front of other people at public places.

+ Give money to the beggars on the street or tourist attractions.

Actually beggars are sometimes not beggars. There is another way you can help people in difficult circumstances like donating to the charity. Children are exploited to earn money to groups of people. So be aware of that.

Aurora Travel is an excellent local Vietnamese travel agent. They organised a fantastic private 14 day tour for our family of four, including two teenaged boys aged 13 and 16 in January 2011. We based our trip on their "smiles of Vietnam" tour, but we requested quite a few changes to suit our personal needs and nothing was ever too much trouble for them. The price was extremely good value - friends who have previously visited Vietnam couldn't believe what a bargain price we paid for really good quality accommodation and a trip that included Hanoi, Saigon, Hoi An, Hue, Mui Ne, Mekong delta with great day trips included. Great value and quality with excellent guides, good drivers in airconditioned vehicles. A very reputable company and highly recommended. Although I spent months researching our trip, the best parts were always part of the original itinerary suggested by Aurora Travel. They know the best tours, hotels and next time we'll save a lot of time and effort by just going with their recommendations! BTW, the visa on arrival they arranged was too easy - no problem at all.

Fair enough, Ross, thanks for your suggestion. I'll add to my post that the cost was approximately $US5,500, including all accommodation, internal airfares, tours, and most meals for a family of four for 14 nights.

We have been looking at Vietnamstay also which is part of Aurora Travel. In their tours did they include some surprise out of the way, of the beaten track so to speak of, things to do. Or are they just like any other tour company taking you to the tourist spots. Do they include some different things in their tours without having to specifically ask for them - which you wouldn't know to ask about anyway! We have used Intrepid Travel for a couple of trips and I love the way they do theirs (we arn't able to use them for this trip) so just wondering how Aurora Travel do it Pearler?

Count more around 75 usd to 80 usd per day for a good price of local agency.Even less if you are 4 people in the trip.

Travellers have the ideal opportunity to make good savings by using Tripadvisor for suggested local agents.

I know they are more expensive , compared to Vietnam open Tour Sinh Cafe

I am not sure if the latter is genuine as my requests to this company seem to be answered by different people(although the same name is used) I am very confused and don't want to get scammed.

Plus my phone number at home is getting foreign calls all hanging up when answered and this only started when I advised my home number on aa booking enquiry form.

Local News | La Grange resident, recognized for service in Vietnam, participates in Honor Flight

Long-time La Grange resident Chester Lacey was honored on April 10 for his service during the Vietnam War by Honor Flight Chicago, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that flies veterans — free of charge — to Washington, D.C. for a day.

“It was about four or five busloads with a police escort,” he said of the day trip. “We went to the Vietnam memorial … it felt real good to be there because when we went to the Air and Space Museum, I saw the planes I worked on.”

Born in Birmingham, Alabama, the 77-year-old Lacey has lived in La Grange since 1980.

His service during the Vietnam War included being stationed in Thailand servicing the F-105 ThunderChiefs that operated in the Vietnam theater.  After leaving the Air Force in 1968 — as an Airman 1st Class — Lacey joined the U.S. Army Reserves, where he served for several decades.

Lacey’s family members were happy with the way the day tuned out.

“It was really nice,” Lacey’s wife, Park District Commissioner Minister Lynn Lacey, said.

“It was very exciting, we were very proud of my dad,” April Hill, Lacey’s daughter said. “It felt good; it was a blessing.”

Doug Meffley, Co-Director of Honor Flight Chicago, spoke recently about the organization’s mission and how it got started.

“We started in 2008, was our first season,” he said. “We flew World War II veterans only until 2016, and that’s when we opened it up to Korean War veterans, and then we opened it to Vietnam veterans in 2019. We fly all three generations together now.”

Meffley said that Wednesday’s flight brought the total vets served to a little over 10,700, the vast majority being World War II vets, about 6300. Twenty-three hundred Korean vets have made the flight and just over 2100 Vietnam vets have flown. And though the World War II vets are rapidly leaving the scene, Wednesday’s flight did include three from the nation’s “Greatest Generation.” One of the vets served in George Patton’s Army in Europe.

“We’ve still got a dozen on our list right now, but not all of them will fly, due to varying degrees of health limitations,” he said.

The goal of Honor Flight Chicago was to have seven flights per year, scheduling them once a month from April to October, Maffey said. Once there, the vets visit various monuments to service members, particularly for the conflict in which they served.

“It’s different on every flight, but on this one, we first stopped at the Marine Corps Memorial, and from there we went to the World War II Memorial, where we have a nice ceremony for all the vets,” he said. “Then we went down to the Mall to the Lincoln Memorial, where the Vietnam Wall is and where the Korean War Memorial is. While we were there, we actually had a performance by the Army Drill team.”

From there, they made a trip to the Air and Space Museum, heading home from there, being surprised by a special mail call on the flight home and a welcome home ceremony at Midway Airport.

“These flights are as important as ever,” Meffley said. “This started just as a way to get World War II veterans to D.C., but now we primarily fly Vietnam veterans who came home to open animosity to their service that caused so many problems in that generation. We’re correcting that.”

Chester Lacey said he never had any negative experiences himself when he came home from the war and spoke of the war as an important growth period.

“It was an experience that I’m glad I went through, looking back,” Lacey said, “because it made me the man I am today.”

An Nguyen mentored under her mother in the kitchen of their family restaurant, New Saigon, for roughly 15 years. Last week, Nguyen and her mom, Ha Pham, danced around the kitchen of Nguyen’s new restaurant – Dân Dã – preparing for the opening ahead of the weekend.

Rather than mother teaching daughter this time, the two worked together, bouncing ideas off of each other. “This is the torch being passed,” Nguyen said.

Nguyen and her older sister Thao, along with their husbands, opened Dân Dã (pronounced yungh-yaa) in the former Baba & Pop’s pierogi shop at 9945 E. Colfax Ave. in Aurora on Sat., April 6. The family business is next door to their third sister Thoa’s highly acclaimed bakery, Banh & Butter. “We have the best neighbor to go to for a cup of sugar,” Nguyen joked.

Fans of Nguyen’s former restaurant, Savory Vietnam, will be happy to see familiar favorites on Dân Dã’s menu, including DIY spring rolls with bò nướng lá lốt (marinated ground beef wrapped in grape leaves and charcoal grilled).

Nguyen closed Savory Vietnam, at 2200 W. Alameda Ave. less than a mile away from her family’s restaurant, in December after four years due to a retiring business partner and a spike in rent.

The chef heard from many customers who missed their regular Savory Vietnam orders, so rather than present a brand new menu, she wanted to maintain the flavors with a new presentation.

The món kho (a traditional clay pot dish) with pork belly or catfish filets, among other choices, slow braised in caramelized sugar and fish sauce are now actually served bubbling hot in clay pots. “This is food for the people,” Nguyen said. “It’s rustic and comforting, and I want it to bring people back to meals like their mom made.”

The popular DIY platter with an assortment of fried softshell crab, lemon pork skewers, grilled shrimp, shrimp pork egg rolls and fried shrimp paste is now the Dân Dã three-tiered Tower. “I basically thought, ‘How can I put as much stuff on the table as I can in an efficient, but still pretty way?’” she said.

Eventually, Nguyen wants to create a seasonally rotating menu, but for now, “I’m following the formula I know before I turn this into my creative lab,” she said.

Her mom might not have presented some of the traditional dishes like Nguyen chooses to, such as a whole deep-fried striped rainbow sea bass sitting upright on the plate to show off Nguyen’s scoring work. “But I still learn new ideas from her every day,” she said. “She’s my inspiration.”

Dân Dã, which has 42 seats and eight spots at the bar, is open Wed.-Sat. from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sun. from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. with brunch on the weekends. The drink menu boasts Vietnamese salted lemonade, iced coffee, as well as lychee spritzers and Saigon Vietnamese beer.

The sisters are hoping to carry on a new culinary legacy in Aurora after their parents sold New Saigon on Federal Boulevard, which they ran for 30 years, in 2017.

New Saigon, which had become a Denver staple, closed for good in February as Pham and Thai Nguyen decided to sell the building, which they still own. Thu, a fourth Nguyen sister, still runs New Saigon Bakery & Deli next door to the original restaurant, at 630 S. Federal Blvd.
