With its many tourist attractions, as well as its cool vibe and gorgeous cast-iron architecture, SoHo is definitely worth visiting!

And, this post is a guide to things to do in SoHo, including where to eat, shop, and see art.

I also include a sample itinerary, family-friendly activities, and things to do at night.

To write this post, I relied on the extensive experiences that I and my fellow local tour guides of Free Tours by Foot have of SoHo.

What to Do in SoHo NYC

We lead dozens of guided walking tours through the streets of SoHo every week, guiding hundreds of visitors.

History of SoHo

The land encompassing modern-day SoHo was marsh and forest land until Dutch Settlers established farms in the area in the 1640s.

An early Dutch map, the Manatus Map of 1639, shows plantations, roads, and structures in this area. A large portion of the land was owned during the 1660s by Augustus Herrman.

When he died, his brother-in-law, Nicholas Bayard, inherited the property, making him the largest landowner in Manhattan. (Bayard Street in Chinatown is named after Bayard).

By the late 1700s, large farms were being sold and subdivided in response to the growing population and urbanization of the City.

In the early 1800s, Broadway was paved and wealthier residents of the city began to build homes in the area to escape the increasingly crowded lower part of Manhattan.

By the 1850s and 60s, many fashionable hotels such as the famous St. Nicholas and premier department stores such as Tiffany’s, Lord & Taylor and Brooks Brothers had opened up.

Theaters and casinos sprang up along Broadway and the area became a hub of nightlife while the side streets were lined with expensive brothels.

In the 1870s and 1880s, the streets to the east and west of Broadway underwent a dramatic change when industry came to town.

This explosion of commercial activity prompted wealthy residents to flee the area and move further north of Manhattan.

Industrial growth also prompted the widespread use of cast iron to erect new factories in the district.

Approximately 250 cast-iron buildings stand in New York City and the majority of them are in SoHo.

It is these cast-iron buildings that give SoHo its distinct and stunning appearance.

Cast iron was an American architectural innovation and was cheaper to use for facades of buildings than stone or brick.

Cast iron is also pliable and easily molded so architects and builders could create intricately designed patterns in the Classical French and Italian styles while saving money.

In fact, many of the stone columns you will see on the ground level of cast-iron buildings are in fact cast iron painted to resemble stone.

Another advantage of cast iron that led to major changes in how buildings were made (and ultimately altered who and what resided in the neighborhood) was its strength.

The stronger construction allowed for window frames to be taller allowing for more sunlight into the interior of the buildings.

This was ideal for factories and industrial companies which benefited from this free source of lighting.

It was the advent of steel as a major construction material that brought an end to the cast-iron era.

Not only did cast iron disappear, but so did the higher-quality industry. From the 1910s to 1950s, SoHo’s beautiful buildings housed cheap, wholesale textile companies known as the "rag trade”.

Many factories illegally employed minors and immigrants for little pay to work in horrendous conditions known as ‘sweatshops’.

Numerous fires broke out in these factories and SoHo gained the nickname “Hell’s Hundred Acres.”

Eventually, even these factories shut down and moved elsewhere in the city and SoHo became an abandoned industrial wasteland.

By the late 1960s unknown artists just starting their careers, cheap rents, huge spaces, and great light, made these former factories attractive.

Some of the first artists to move into SoHo were Donald Judd, Claes Oldenburg, and Carl Andre.

Other up-and-coming artists flocked to SoHo like Andy Warhol, Jean- Michel Basquiat and street artist Keith Haring and this urban wasteland became a hip, avant-garde destination.

It’s estimated that SoHo was home to about 2,000 artists by the early 1970s and by 1973 there were 33 art galleries.

The area had become so run-down and empty that city officials began discussions of the construction of a lower Manhattan expressway that came to be known as the LOMEX project.

LOMEX would have ripped through much of the heart of lower Manhattan and the historic buildings of SoHo would be demolished to make way for new housing construction.

Historic preservationists began to petition for SoHo to be designated as a protected historic district and in 1973, the SoHo-Cast Iron Historic District was created.

You can tell which streets are included in the district as they have brown street signs rather than the normal green signs.

SoHo’s significance in history has also been recognized nationally as it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1978.

By the mid-1970s the enormous size of the lofts and the charm of the narrow streets paved with Belgium blocks and lined with gorgeous buildings invited real estate developers to buy up buildings and rent prices skyrocketed.

By the mid-1980s, designer boutiques, chic restaurants, and art galleries opened and SoHo remains a fashion and art capital of the world.

Today, SoHo is one of the top travel destinations in the world. It is definitely a neighborhood you do not want to miss in NYC.

04 Explore SoHo with a camera

If you’re big into photography, then make sure to bring your camera to this neighborhood. SoHo fashion is some of the best fashion in the country and the art scene is top-notch as well. If photographing people isn’t your thing, then you also have the option of shooting the cast-iron buildings.

During the industrial revolution, cast-iron architecture was very popular as everyone was convinced that iron was much more substantial and fireproofed than steel. At the time, cast-iron fronts were built more often than normal wooden houses. These typical cast-iron buildings are the reason why so many producers decided to shoot their films or commercials on the streets of SoHo.

The fire escape staircases along with the architecture give the neighborhood its unique look. These beautiful buildings belong to SoHo similar to how yellow cabs belong to NYC.

05 Have breakfast at 12 Chairs

The name of the 12 Chair comes from the beginnings of the once small café, which only had 12 seats. Here you will find delicacies from Israel with a successful mix to the Russian cuisine. Sounds confusing, but it is super delicious. It is very popular both for brunch and dinner among the locals and is one of our go-to SoHo breakfast spots!

La Colombe Coffee Roasters

06 Enjoy a nice coffee in SoHo

La Colombe Coffee Roasters in SoHo NYC is a renowned coffee haven known for its meticulously crafted brews and minimalist ambiance. With its sleek design and dedication to quality, La Colombe offers an array of specialty coffee drinks, including their famous Draft Latte and Pure Black Cold Brew, drawing in coffee aficionados from all around.

My tip: These are the best cafés in SoHo NYC right now!

07 Keep an eye for pop-up events

As we mentioned above, depending on the time of the year, SoHo hosts numerous pop-up events. The latest one we went to was the popular Friend’s Pop-Up and Sarah Jessica Parker’s Shoe Pop-Up.

Dominique Ansel Bakery

08 Dominique Ansel Bakery: Try the famous Cronut!

You’ve probably heard of the infamous cronut. That originally started at Dominique Ansel Bakery. When they first came out, it was almost impossible to get one because it would sell out right away.

Today the hustle and bustle has calmed down a bit, but we can still recommend a visit. Be sure to try the strawberry lychee tartlet or the croissants with coconut and chocolate!!!

Boqueria_Tapas_SoHo_1600x800

09 Restaurant Boqueria: Eat the best tapas in town!

One of our highlights is the Boqueria in SoHo. We have walked past it 100 times and have not noticed it at all. Then it was recommended to us during a conversation and what can we say: it is really really good! We had to wait almost 30 minutes until we had two of the coveted seats. Both Tino and I would describe ourselves as Spain connoisseurs, so we were all the more surprised at HOW good the tapas were here. Took us right back to our summer vacations!

10 View independent movies

The Film Forum in SoHo/Greenwich Village is a non-profit theater that’s known for showing independent flicks. If you’re a big movie person, this place is for you. The theater opened in 1970 and is an iconic spot.

Fire_Museum_NYC_170728134126005

11 New York City Fire Museum

The former firehouse was reconstructed into a museum filled with three floors of New York City Fire Department history. Built-in 1904, the NYC Fire Museum cares for over 10,000 objects as well as archives, ephemera, and photographs that celebrate the history of the New York City Fire Department . You will also find a permanent memorial to the 343 members of the FDNY-EMS who lost their lives in the World Trade Center attacks on September 11, 2001. This museum is great for kids as younger friends of the FDNY are invited to try on an original firemen suit and can learn all about how firemen extinguish a fire.

Bike_Tours_170423115755018

12 Ride your bike around SoHo

If your time is limited and you want to check out as much of SoHo as you can, then we recommend just taking a bike . You’ll be able to see the many cobblestone streets, the art, and many fashionable people. It’s a lot to take in but definitely worth it.

You can rent a bike at the nearby Brooklyn Bridge Bike Rental or take one of the many bikes from the city bike program Citi Bike .

We consider Jimmy at the James one of the best bars in NYC .

02 Alexander and Bonin

Alexander and Bonin Gallery was formed in 1995 by Ted Bonin and Carolyn Alexander. The primary focus of the collaboration was to support and represent the work of mid-career, established, and emerging contemporary international visionaries. Since its opening, the Alexander and Bonin Gallery has established a reputation for maintaining a diverse and rigorous program.

The gallery was located in Chelsea on 10th Avenue from 1997 until 2016, when it moved to Walker Street in Tribeca, but is currently located in Soho on Wooster Street. Though the final move was not a significant move geographically, it allowed the partners to accurately represent 22 artists specializing in many types of contemporary art. You’ll find everything from contemporary sculptures and paintings to videos in this gallery.

Arcadia Contemporary Soho Best Art Galleries NYC

03 Arcadia Contemporary

Arcadia Contemporary Gallery was founded in 2001 and had its first location in Soho New York. It has had its current name since 2014, originally it was called Arcadia Fine Arts. 05 Brooke Alexander Gallery

The Brooke Alexander Gallery was founded in Soho in 1968 by Carolyn and Brooke Alexander in an East 68th Street storefront. Though it’s now located on Wooster Street, it still proudly serves as a member of The Art Dealers Association of America today.

This art gallery began publishing prints and multiples for artists in 1968 and since then has published over 1,500 works. The Alexanders relocated the gallery a couple of times throughout the years, having moved from 68th Street to 57th Street in 1975, and then from 57th to Wooster Street in 1985.

At some point in the early ‘90s, Brooke Alexander and his wife split up, and he became the sole director/owner of the gallery. His wife, Carolyn Alexander, went on to join the gallery’s former director, Ted Bonin, to create the Alexander and Bonin Gallery in 1995. Yet still, the Brooke Alexander Gallery has become known for its influence on New York’s late-20th century art scene. In fact, these efforts were recognized in 1995 as the gallery was honored at the Smithsonian Institution.

06 Cast iron architecture

During the industrial revolution, cast-iron architecture was very popular as everyone was convinced that iron was much more substantial and fireproofed than steel. At the time, cast-iron fronts were built more often than normal wooden houses. These typical cast-iron buildings are the reason why so many producers decided to shoot their films or commercials on the streets of SoHo .

Color Factory NYC

The Color Factory New York is a museum where all ages can embark on an interactive journey through 14 colorful art exhibits. From the bright yellow of New York’s famous cabs to the creamy brown of a delicious street pretzel, the Color Factory celebrates the city’s vibrant colors.

Eden Gallery in SoHo NYC

09 Georges Berges Gallery

The Georges Berges Gallery can be found in the heart of Soho, where you’ll find a splendid mixture of consequential living artists from around the globe. The man, Georges Berges, has always had a way of looking at art with a worldly yet human view, and he used this to create his namesake gallery on Broadway. His vision was to use the gallery to bridge the gap between emerging international collectors and artists, which has been pushed forward recently after a second gallery was opened in Berlin.

Yet, while he believes in representing emerging markets and the artists within them, he also knows how important it is to maintain a significant relationship with the artist and the art. At the Georges Berges Gallery, collectors can acquire original works from upcoming and established artists that have been shown and vetted by prestigious institutions, museums, and private collections around the world.

Best Restaurants in Soho NYC

SoHo is filled with many restaurants, cafes, and bars and the majority of them are very popular. There’s literally a place to eat in every corner of the neighborhood. Trendy and hip restaurants in SoHo NYC can be found scattered throughout the neighborhood. Fine dining and more up-scale restaurants in SoHo are perfect for a date or an anniversary. Below are some places we can recommend:

Balthazar_NYC_180213124837003

01 Balthazar

The stylish restaurant serves traditional French cuisine. Outside the menu you can also choose from the seafood bar and the delicacies from the Balthazar Bakery. The breakfast is legendary and the home-baked bread is especially convincing. By the way, you can get a lot more of it in the adjacent bakery.

Antique_Garage_New_York_22

02 Antique Garage

As the name suggests, the location used to be an old screwdriver garage, which was brought to life in 2003. The furnishing with antique paintings and lamps creates a relaxed, cosy atmosphere.  And then the food: the starters alone are already a blast. Try “Mezze” – these are Mediterranean little treats.

230705141846001

03 Aurora SoHo

Ever been to Italy? Well, if you’re in SoHo, you don’t need a plane ticket because Aurora is right in the neighborhood, bringing you the rich flavors of Piedmont. Aurora got its start back in 2003 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn when Chef Riccardo Buitoni and his pals decided their neighborhood needed a place for authentic Italian comfort food. And boy, did they deliver!

By 2007, Aurora was ready to grace SoHo with its delightful charm. Ever since, it’s been the trusted local favorite, distinguished by its commitment to freshness. The irresistible aroma of bread baking? That’s all them. The silky, luscious gelato? Crafted in-house. Every ingredient, sourced locally or imported straight from Italy, is part of the authentic experience.

But let me share some insider brunch wisdom: you absolutely need to try the Parma Benedict. Prosciutto, poached eggs, and burrata, all gently laid on a fluffy brioche and topped with a luxurious truffle hollandaise. What a way to brunch! And their Truffle French Fries? Simply delectable. They serve this mouthwatering menu on Saturdays and Sundays from 11:00 am until 3:30 pm. So, whenever you find yourself in SoHo between these hours, stop by Aurora—it’s an experience you’ll truly savor!

Best Bars in Soho NYC

At the end of the day, if you’re looking to relax and unwind, SoHo is also filled with amazing bars and pubs. Make sure to visit Jimmy at the James, which is a popular SoHo rooftop bar where you’ll get an awesome view of the skyline and exceptional atmosphere.

Bar

01 142 Sullivan Bar

142 Sullivan Bar is a very popular little bar, especially with New Yorkers, in the Soho neighborhood, just two blocks from Bleecker Street and one block from W Houston Street.

We love this place because of the welcoming atmosphere, and: the cocktails and the wines are really good.

02 Bar Moga

Bar Moga is a 1920s-era Japanese cocktail bar with jazz music, specializing in Craft Cocktails, Shochu, Japanese whiskey-based libations, and Yoshoku comfort food. Embracing the best this era of Japan had to offer. Yōshoku (洋食), or “western” dishes, are comfort food in Japan that boomed during the Taisho period, lending itself perfectly to the Bar Moga concept. Their signature cocktails incorporate traditional Japanese spirits into recipes inspired by the American prohibition era.

230627124026001_Fanelli_Cafe_SoHo_NYC

03 Fanelli Cafe

Located in the historic SoHo district of New York City, Fanelli Cafe is one of the city’s oldest bars, situated opposite The Mercer hotel.

The property at 94 Prince Street, where Fanelli Cafe currently resides, first appeared in the city’s tax assessment records in 1846. In 1847, Herman Gerken leased the wooden building on the site and opened a grocery store. By 1857, Gerken replaced it with a five-story brick building that still exists.

The SoHo area underwent significant changes in the mid-19th century, transitioning from a residential neighborhood to a district lined with fashionable hotels, upscale stores, and brothels. Post-1870, the district became a hub for wholesale trade, featuring cast iron warehouses characteristic of today’s SoHo, an acronym for “south of Houston Street.”

04 Jimmy at the James Hotel

Here you have a 360° view of the skyline of Manhattan. At the pool you can enjoy classically inspired cocktails with herbs from the in-house roof garden.

Best Cafés in Soho NYC

If you don’t want to necessarily dine-in, you can always check out some SoHo cafes . There are artisanal tea and coffee shops and bakeries throughout the neighborhood and are great places to visit for a quick break.

01 12 Chairs

The name of the 12 Chair comes from the beginnings of the once small café, which only had 12 seats. Here you will find delicacies from Israel with a successful mix to the Russian cuisine. Sounds confusing, but it is super delicious. Very popular both for brunch and dinner.

Cafe

02 Butler Bakeshop & Espresso Bar (SoHo)

Butler in SoHo NYC is the local gem renowned for its delectable breakfast, lunch, and everything in between. Indulge in freshly prepared meals and scrumptious baked goods, complemented by the finest espresso sourced from the esteemed artisans at Intelligentsia.

Chobani

03 Chobani Joghurt Bar

This greek yoghurt bar is definitely one of NYC’s best. Here you will find everything that is organic and natural. As one of the most famous yogurt companies in the US their philosophy is that you cant beat natural ingredients, so they don’t try to. It’s definitely the perfect place to relax and recharge your batteries after a nice stroll through SOHO.

Citizens of Chelsea & SoHo Food

04 Citizens of SoHo

Our next stop brings us to Citizens of SoHo, where the warmth and charm of an Aussie neighborhood cafe meld seamlessly with the bustling energy of New York City. Open for brunch all day, Citizen’s embodies the feeling of a close-knit community amidst the sprawling metropolis, where locals gather over steaming cups of coffee and delightful meals.

Citizens first opened its doors in Chelsea in 2016, born from the shared vision of co-founders Justin Giuffrida and Andrew Geisel. Justin, from Melbourne (the world’s cafe capital), and Andrew, from the sunny Gold Coast, dreamt of bringing an authentic Australian cafe experience to the Big Apple while working together in an NYC coffee shop.

For food recommendations, I urge you to try their Famous Smashing Avo, a gluten-free and vegetarian-friendly dish that features avocado tossed with feta and lime, served on a thick-cut multigrain toast and garnished with pickled onion, radish, pumpkin seeds, and beetroot hummus.

If you’re in the mood for a sweet indulgence, their Banana Bread French Toast is a must-try. It’s an elevated take on the classic, featuring maple banana bread French toast adorned with caramelized bananas and mascarpone. Drizzles of miso butterscotch and sprinkles of black sesame soy powder add a unique flavor twist, and a garnish of fresh mint leaves provides the perfect finishing touch.

SoHo Stores: Shopping in SoHo

Because of the high number of designer stores in SoHo , this district quickly became one of the most famous places to live and arguably the number one destination for shopping in New York City . If you’re looking for the latest trends, creative and stylish fashion, then make no mistake about it, this is the neighborhood to go to. You can also find well-known stores such as:

  • Zara (503 Broadway)
  • Adidas Originals  (115 Spring Street)
  • H&M (591 Broadway)
  • Nike  (529 Broadway)
  • Louis Vuitton  (116 Greene Street)
  • Prada (575 Broadway)
  • Moncler (99 Prince Street)

We also recommend checking out the Converse Speciality Store (560 Broadway) as well. They have good deals for our favorite casual Converse shoe and they have a “design your own Converse” corner where you can be creative and are able to decide how your shoes should look like.

SoHo also has a famous brand called  Woolrich  (125 Wooster Street). You can buy your warmest winter jacket here for 20% less compared to its European stores. A little further down Spring Street, Mercer Street and Prince Street, you will find the Apple Store (103 Prince Street) and Free People (99 Spring Street) with more stores to satisfy your needs.

The Best Boutiques in SoHo

Boutique Shopping

In addition to mainstream stores, boutiques in SoHo are cleverly curated shops that cater specifically to their customers. Boutique shopping in NYC is a great way to find unique pieces that you won’t necessarily find in bigger department stores. SoHo invites you to discover little creative shops, ran by young New Yorkers who sell their handcrafted products.

SoHo in New York is a lot more than just the big names of fashion magazines . Narrow alleyways, side streets, and sales carts on the sidewalks have a variety of special gifts and memories that you can purchase for a great deal.

Your SoHo shopping experience will be a memory that you’ll never forget, that’s for sure. Our personal tip – check out the MoMa Design Store on Spring Street. New York City has a lot of MoMa stores, but we think the one in SoHo is the best one. Another tip – visit SoHo during the week because the weekend can be really busy.

Best Galleries in SoHo

For the longest time, SoHo has been a key element of the New York art scene. Because of extremely high rent prices in the area, most of the galleries have now moved to areas like Chelsea . However, SoHo still offers great art galleries that you can visit if you’re interested in it.

One of the best galleries in SoHo is the Drawing Center on Wooster Street. They extended the space by another 50% making it even more worth visiting. Some other interesting galleries are 287 Spring (287 Spring St) or Eden Gallery (470 Broome St). During your walk around SoHo, you’ll see many other spaces that could tickle your fancy.

What does SoHo stand for?

SoHo is short for South of Houston Street. Houston Street is a big street in Lower Manhattan that goes from Hudson River to East River. Fun Fact: In this case Houston is not pronounced like the city in Texas but more like “how-ston”.

Where is SoHo NYC?

SoHo NYC is located in Lower Manhattan. Since SoHo in this case is an acronym for South of Houston Street the name already suggests that its located in the South of Houston Street. SoHo is close to Little Italy and Chinatown, as well as Hudson Square and Greenwich Village.

Are you looking for things to do in Soho, NYC? If so, keep reading for all our favorite ideas!

If you’re visiting NYC, you might be looking for things to do in Soho, NYC. Well, you’ve come to the right place!

Soho is one of the nicest neighborhoods in NYC. There’s plenty to do there, from shopping, to arts, to food and sightseeing.

Soho is also one of our favorite neighborhoods in NYC, and we’ve spent many years narrowing down our list of things to do in Soho, NYC.

soho house nyc tour

In this list, we’ve also included some suggestions from nearby neighborhoods too (like the Lower East Side, and Greenwich Village).

Don’t worry, every suggestion is either in the heart of Soho, or within a 10 minute walk! So, let’s get into it!

Here are our favorite things to do in Soho, NYC…

Dominique ansel bakery.

First on our list of things to do in Soho NYC, it’s visiting Dominique Ansel Bakery .

This is one of the best bakeries in the city, and it’s a stand-out choice for anyone visiting the Soho area.

This bakery were actually the great minds behind the ‘Cronut’ and you’ll find long lines each morning here, as people try to secure one of these precious commodities!

However, if you head there in the afternoon or evening, whilst the Cronuts might be sold-out, you can try all of their other baked goods, without the queues.

I recommend the caramelized croissant (pictured below)! So delicious and such a great choice for things to do in Soho, NYC.

Explore the local art galleries

Next on our list of things to do in Soho, NYC, it’s exploring the local art galleries.

One of the most charming things about Soho as a neighborhood, is just how much art there is here.

You’ll find larger galleries like the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art and The Drawing Center, which are both fantastic…

But if you venture to West Broadway (between Prince St and Spring St) you’ll find lots of smaller galleries, each beautiful in their own right, and with free admission too. It’s a great choice for things to do in Soho NYC.

Have lunch at Thai Diner

Next on our list of things to do in Soho, NYC, it’s visiting the Thai Diner .

If you ask any local, chances are they’d rate Thai Diner as one of the best restaurants in the area.

It’s quirky, fun, and (most importantly) the food is super delicious. It’s a great choice for things to do in Soho.

Visit ‘Goods for the Study’ on Mulberry St

Our next suggestion for things to do in Soho, is visiting the cute little store called ‘ Goods for the Study ‘.

The store has two halves, but we absolutely love the side of the store tha sells pens and pencils. Look, we know this might sound a bit boring (it’s a pen shop?) but it’s so much fun.

If you loved stationery as a child, you’re going to feel so much joy looking around this shop!

There are more pens than you’ve ever seen, and you can try them all! It’s such a great choice for things to do in Soho NYC.

The range of flavors, and the skill involved in making these little treasures, makes this place worth checking out. We guarantee you’re going to absolutely adore it.

It’s such a great choice for things to do in Soho, and you can buy them as little souvenirs for friends back home too.

My personal favorite is the passionfruit flavored candy, and their passionfruit toffees too!

I think this is my favorite breakfast place in Soho, without contest.

It’s traditional New York breakfast food, so think bagels, cream cheese, smoked salmon and other delicious things.

The smoked fish here is their specialty, and they do it to absolute perfection. It’s an amazing choice for things to do in Soho, don’t miss it!

Also, just to add: The coleslaw here, is the BEST coleslaw I have ever eaten in my entire life.

Soho House New York

Chelsea, New York City, New York, United States

  • Full Review
  • Beautiful, sophisticated, urban rooms in the trendy Meatpacking district
  • Rooms have velvet chairs and distressed wood floors, walls, and beam ceilings
  • Access to private club facilities from an exclusive brand
  • "Medium" and "Big" room types are spacious and have freestanding tubs
  • Cool amenities such as “One While Changing” in-room bartender service
  • Generous toiletry spreads including Cowshed bath products
  • Stocked minibars come with gourmet snacks, liquor, wine, and coffee
  • Egyptian cotton sheets, bathrobes and slippers
  • Hair straighteners in all rooms (along with the usual hairdryers)
  • A scene-y rooftop pool and terrace (seasonal) with sensational views
  • Library, free Wi-Fi, and a private screening room
  • Fitness center (though small)
  • Prices are high, even for a New York City luxury hotel
  • Staff may not treat guests quite as well as full-time members
  • Hotel guests are allowed only one visitor at a time!
  • Some people might detect an air of pretension
  • No photos allowed in the common areas
  • Don't even think about taking the toiletries home -- a charge will incur!
  • Some street noise from lower floors may be heard

Bottom Line

The Soho House New York -- not to be confused with SoHo , the neighborhood -- is a members-only club that caters to the film and media industries. The Meatpacking district locale also has 30 luxury hotel rooms -- Small, Medium and Big -- that are open to the public. Despite the impressive cuisine (an improvement from days past), food still takes a slight backseat to the hip party scene; alcohol is pervasive in and out of the rooms, from the late-night cocktail scene, to the fully stocked minibars (with fresh lemon and limes), to the "One While Changing," where guests receive a personal in-room visit from a bartender between the hours of work and play. Throw in the infamous rooftop pool and terrace -- which some consider worth the price alone -- the Cowshed spa, library, and free Wi-Fi (for those who attempt to get work done), and it's clear there's not another hotel in NYC quite like it.

Oyster Hotel Review

An exclusive club-like atmosphere -- because that's what it is..

soho house nyc tour

If the understated entrance of Soho House is meant to throw off general bypassers, then it succeeds. This cobblestoned section of 9th Avenue is a hub of gentrified activity, but the black iron awning -- a contrast against the beige brick converted warehouse -- blends in, until guests discover a small sign that is meant to look like a London street sign, paying homage to its roots across the pond. The club was founded in London in the '90s, and British influences extend to the interior decor as well.

The front desk is heavily guarded by a small team of polished and friendly staff that greets members, visitors of members, and hotel guests. Check-in is personal -- sometimes even done by the General Manager himself -- and then guests are whizzed up to their rooms via one of two elevators.

Those who choose to stay here pay steep prices not just for the rooms but for access to the private enclave -- in other words, Floor Six. This is where the club space is located with a restaurant, bar, and modern art collection. There's a buzz throughout most of the day, from breakfast (brunch on weekends) until the wee hours when the late-night menu is served. Attractive movers and shakers working on laptops, impressing colleagues, or dining at a number of chic sitting areas are omnipresent. Members are "creative" types, while Wall Street types, supposedly, aren't welcome to join, but that doesn't mean that Soho House has an absence of monetary worth. Quite the opposite. There's a distinct whiff of pretension that can come and go, which isn't from the staff -- they are friendly -- but rather from some of the members themselves.

One floor above sits the rectangular rooftop pool and terrace. With decor that changes annually, cushy lounge chairs, umbrellas, and striking city views, this is one of the most coveted summer spots in Manhattan . (Fans of Sex and the City may remember when Samantha sneaked into the club to use this pool.) There's a salad bar serving healthy fare, and servers make the rounds delivering bottled water or colorful cocktails.

At night, expect to dress up. The cocktail hour is prime time, and drinks flow until late at night. The age range is wide (there's even a special membership for women ages 27 and under) but strict house rules -- like no pairs in the toilets -- help ensure the party atmosphere stays classy.

In the Meatpacking District, close to excellent restaurant, shops and the High Line

Soho House is smack in the center of Manhattan's Meatpacking District -- a trendy nabe adjacent to Chelsea and West Village . The area's name refers to its historical past as home to hundreds of slaughterhouses and meat processing plants; later, it was a cruising ground for prostitutes. These days, after a major transformation, it has become a fashionable neighborhood with a lively nightlife scene. Open since 2003, The Soho House credits itself for importing cool to the area, while others attribute the start of gentrification to the designer boutiques.

Fancy shops and expensive, celebrity-chef restaurants are prevalent throughout the neighborhood, and at night, plunging necklines and sky-high heels appear as the young and trendy meander the cobblestone streets. The revelry lasts until long past the midnight hour on weekends, and lower rooms may experience street noise. Not to say that the neighborhood is all about partying. There's a Citi bike station directly across the street, and the High Line Park entrance is nearby for sunset walks. Hudson River Park provides a great bike and running path. Taxis are easy to get from here, or the front desk can arrange private transportation. For the few staying here who might actually be taking the Subway, the A, C, E, 1, 2, 3 and L station to Brooklyn are all within walking distance.

Gorgeous, urban rooms with rustic woods and velvet chairs

soho house nyc tour

The Soho House has 30 rooms that all went through a major renovation in 2013. Rooms differ slightly depending on the size -- Small, Medium and Big, ranging from 300 to 750 square feet -- but they share many of the main ingredients. The decor is a blend of industrial-chic and sophisticated Britannia; details may include painted exposed brick, velvet chairs, rich rugs, brocade fabrics, and wood -- lots of wood, from hardwood floors to wood-beamed ceilings to, in some, rustic wall paneling. The style may strike some as slightly bohemian (in the same vein as the Gramercy Park Hotel ), which seems appropriate given the club's targeting of creative types.

All have impressive (and expensive) minibars with still and sparkling water, snacks (including some from Dean & Deluca), full-size liquor bottles, Perrier Jouet champagne, and sodas. Along with fancy glassware, there's a cutting board, knife (for the fresh lime and lemon), a Nespresso coffee machine, and a proper tea set (this is a London-based company, after all). Upscale extras include REVO Heritage Sound Systems, Egyptian Cotton sheets, bathrobes, and slippers. Bathrooms have walk-in showers with rainforest steam and showerhead systems, an abundant spread of toiletries with everything from deodorant to toothpaste to tampons, and an impressive range of Cowshed products in full-size bottles. These are free to use but guests will be charged the full price of the bottles if they take them upon departure. Rooms also come with bandaids, convertors and chargers. A pre-loaded iPad is available upon request.

Small Rooms have queen beds, while Medium and Big Rooms have king beds. All rooms have a "One While Changing" card -- a true trademark of the Soho House brand -- that allows guests to call for a personal visit from the bartender in between the hours of work and play, when guests are changing into their evening attire. This is a free service and is available each night of the stay.

Guests have an opportunity to mix and mingle with New York's social set over an impressive food and bev program.

Not always known for its food, The Soho House has made cuisine a priority in recent years. Breakfast items like egg sandwiches, poached eggs on toast with avocado, the super food bowl, and housemade granola satiate the working crowd during the week, while the weekend brunch offers a generous spread of seafood, fruit, and champagne.

An all-day menu includes classics like artisanal cheeses, a chicken club sandwich, linguine, scallops, and a filet. The late-night menu includes marinated olives, a burger, meatballs, and fried calamari. Desserts include more cheeses, chocolate almond torte, and strawberry rhubarb crisp. The cocktail list offers signature items like the Soho Mule -- a take on a classic Moscow Mule, and many wines are offered by the glass, carafe, and/or bottle.

During warmer months is when the rooftop comes alive with a small but fabulous rectangular pool lined with lounge chairs and beautiful people. The terrace provides spots to have drinks and meetings while munching on gourmet salads. Seating is first come, first serve here too, and poolside service is available. There are designated children's hours.

The on-site spa is open to members and guests and offers Cowshed products, mud soaks, massages, facials, waxing, and body treatments. In-room treatments are also available.

A private 44-seat screening room on the fourth floor, a library, and small fitness center are all open to hotel guests, too. The schedule for the cinema and any special events is posted throughout the building. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.

Why Should I Become a Soho House Member?

The biggest reasons for applying for a Soho House membership include gaining access to the infamous Soho Houses, exclusive events and workshops, and a plethora of networking opportunities.

Not to mention many of the houses offer wellness facilities such as a pool and gym that are automatically included in your membership.

Overall if you’re a creative yearning a new workspace and a community of like-minded individuals, this is for you.

How Long Does the Soho House Application Take to Complete?

Soho-House-river-house

Despite popular belief, the Soho House application itself is pretty straightforward and only takes 15-20 minutes.

But from personal experience, to prep all your answers and application information I suggest setting aside 1 hour to do your Soho House application from start to finish.

Membership Types: Applying for the Soho House

babington-house

I go over each membership type in loads of detail in my Soho House Membership guide , but here’s a quick overview of each:

➡️ Local House or Every House : For the majority of the memberships you’ll have the option to choose between one local house or all houses, which in the name, gives you access to only one of the Soho Houses or all of them. Personally, unless you’re super keen to save $$ on your membership, I would choose ‘All Houses’.

➡️ Soho House Membership : gives you access to all Soho House membership perks including house access, events, onsite facilities and exclusive Soho House discounts.

➡️ Under 27 Membership : the same as a Soho House membership but at a reduced rate if you’re under 27. These discounts last until you’re 31 so if you’re on the fence about applying I suggest doing it now!

➡️ The Soho Friends Membership : for those that don’t quite fit the Soho House membership a Soho Friends membership gives you access to certain areas of the houses and events, and is significantly cheaper than a normal membership.

➡️ City Without Houses Membership : for those that don’t have a Soho House in their city this membership allows you to attend and network at Soho Houses local events and gains you access to the houses when you travel.

➡️ Soho Works Membership : A work-specific membership for creative professionals adjacent to the Soho House brand, only available in certain locations.

💭 What happens after I submit my Soho House application? After your application is submitted it could take anywhere from a few weeks to a few months to hear back as applicants are reviewed by the Membership team in their quarterly meetings. From my experience (which I think was quite lucky) I was accepted into the Soho House within two weeks of applying in late December, 2022. But it truly varies person by person!

10+ Soho House Application Tips & Advice

Before you submit your Soho House application, here are some things to keep in mind when you apply to ace your submission (from a Soho member…i.e. me!).

And yes, if you’re wondering ‘What should I write in my Soho House application?’ — we’ll get there!

1. Decide Why You Want to Be a Soho House Member

soho-house-rome

Before you even think about filling in the Soho House application form, take a pause.

“Why do you want to be a part of the Soho House?”

Whether you’re an artist looking for inspiration, a creative tech entrepreneur in search of collaboration, or a designer wanting to share ideas, knowing your motive will make applying for the Soho House x10 easier.

If you’re stuck on ideas you can definitely tie it back to a desire to elevate your personal and professional growth, which Soho House is perfect for!

Whatever your reason, it’s essential to be genuine and provide details as Soho House values authenticity.

2. Prepare Your Application Answers in Advance: Crafting a Winning First Impression

soho-house-barcelona

Embarking on your Soho House application journey might stir up feelings reminiscent of prepping for a big job interview or drafting a college application. It’s exciting, a tad nerve-wracking, and undeniably important.

But just like those pivotal moments, success often hinges on thorough preparation, so make sure you:

✏️ Do Your Homework

Start by diving deep into the ethos and culture of Soho House. What values resonate with you that you can put on your application? What kind of members are they looking for?

The more you grasp their core philosophy, the better you can tailor your answers to reflect a genuine alignment with their community.

✏️ Authenticity is Key

While it’s essential to present your best self, it’s equally crucial to be genuine. Soho House appreciates authenticity so rather than trying to fit into a mold you think they’d appreciate, let your true self shine through.

Authentic stories, experiences, and aspirations resonate more than generic responses.

✏️ Seek Feedback

Once you’ve got your draft ready, share it with trusted friends or mentors.

Fresh eyes can offer invaluable perspectives, catching nuances or angles you might have missed.

They can also point out areas or things you’ve done that’d make you a great member you might not have even realized!

3. Make Sure You Meet the Applicant Criteria: Ensuring Your Foot’s in the Right Door

soho-house-paris-2

Soho House isn’t your average membership club where anyone with the fees can saunter in, you have to fit the vibes.

✅ Dive into the Specifics

Soho House typically caters to individuals within the creative industries. Now, ‘creative’ is a broad term, and it’s worth deciphering. Are you an artist, filmmaker, designer, or perhaps a writer?

Or maybe you’re in a field that doesn’t traditionally scream “creative” but has a unique, innovative twist that sets it apart. Understand where you fit in and make it clear on your application.

✅ Reflect on Your Contribution

It’s not just about what Soho House can offer you, but what you can bring to the Soho House community. What unique experiences, insights, or energies do you carry?

Being aligned with their criteria means not only meeting their standards but enhancing the rich tapestry of the existing community which is sure to make you standout.

P.S. – This could be anything from your background to a unique personal struggle you’ve overcome, a creative project you’ve taken on, or sharing your personal business journey!

✅ Don’t be Something You’re Not

Soho House, with its emphasis on creativity and innovation, may not be the right fit for everyone. And that’s okay!

Before diving deep into the application process, ensure that your aspirations, personality, and professional background resonate with the club’s ethos.

At the end of the day, it’s about finding a community where you naturally belong, not trying to force-fit yourself into one.

✅ Keep Updated

Membership criteria can evolve over time. So what was true a year ago might not hold water today.

Before you apply make sure to pay a quick visit to their official website for the most up-to-date applicant criteria.

4. Show Your Work: Letting Your Craft Do the Talking

soho-house-new-york

Photo Courtesy: Soho House New York

There’s one timeless phrase that every creator, innovator, and trailblazer knows all too well: “Show, don’t tell.” , and that’s because it’s true!

When it comes to the Soho House – a haven for the creatively inclined – merely stating your accomplishments or roles won’t make as much of an impact as showing them.

From sharing your socials to your portfolio, your business, or a creative project you worked on, be sure to show them that you’re dedicated to your craft.

5. Tell Them Exactly How You’d Use Your Soho House Membership: Imagining Yourself in the House

Soho-Beach-House-Canouan

Photo Courtesy: Soho Beach House Canouan

One thing I made sure to do on my application was state exactly how I planned to use the houses once I was a member.

This could include anything from attending the events to form genuine connections with fellow creatives, to making use of the amenities and facilities to spark inspiration and conversation.

Whatever it is sharing these specifics breathes life into your Soho House application, which can only be a good thing!

6. Don’t Be Arrogant: The Art of Authenticity in Your Application

soho-house-west-hollywood

In vibrant communities like Soho House: Authenticity trumps arrogance.

While sharing all your wins on your application make sure not to come off like they’d be stupid not to let you in, or they probably won’t!

Remember, your application is a two-way street.

You’re offering your unique skills and perspectives to the Soho House community, but you’re also there to absorb, connect, and grow.

Frame your application with this mutual give-and-take in mind.

7. Link Your Socials: Your Digital Handshake to Soho House

soho-house-nashville

In today’s digital age, our social media profiles often serve as windows to our world, alongside our personal and professional endeavors.

Because of this, linking your socials will most definitely help with your Soho House application (but don’t worry, you don’t have to be Instagram or Tik Tok famous to get accepted).

P.S. – If you’re a super private person, just link to your LinkedIn instead!

8. Get a Referral: The Golden Ticket to Amplify Your Application

soho-house-hong-kong

Photo Courtesy: Soho House Hong Kong

Navigating the world of Soho House applications can feel a tad daunting, but you probably didn’t know there’s a hidden ace up many successful applicants’ sleeves. Enter the power of a referral.

Much like in many exclusive circles, a nod from someone already on the inside can significantly elevate your chances.

With that said, if you know anyone who’s an existing member, be sure to ask them if you can list them as a referral before you apply.

P.S. – The existing member will get an email directly from Soho House saying you listed them as a referral, so only do this with people you know in real life!

9. Set Aside Joining Fees: Planning for Your Membership In Advance

Soho-House-Berlin

Stepping into the world of Soho House isn’t just about crafting the perfect application or having the right connections. Let’s be candid; it comes with a price tag.

And while the experiences and networking opportunities can be invaluable, you need to ensure you’re financially prepared to have a membership year-round.

💳 Understand the Cost

Fees for a Soho House membership vary greatly on your membership type (you can calculate what your membership fees would be here ), but you’re looking at a few thousand guaranteed for a yearly membership + a couple hundred in induction fees. You can pay this monthly or annually.

💳 Factor in the Extras

While your membership offers access to a plethora of amenities, certain experiences or events might come at an additional cost.

To factor in these extras you’ll need to ask…

  • Will I be visiting their restaurants or co-working at the houses frequently?
  • How many paid workshops or events will I be attending a month?

All the extras of a Soho House Membership add up quite quickly, so just something to bear in mind!

💳 Consider the Value

It’s not just about the dollars and cents. Before setting aside the fees, reflect on the value you’re receiving in return.

  • Will the networking opportunities propel your career?
  • Do the amenities and spaces align with your lifestyle?

Ensuring a Soho House membership provides value tailored to your needs can make the financial commitment and membership fees feel worthwhile.

10. Be Patient

Soho-House-Austin

Patience is often overlooked in our fast-paced world, but when it comes to your Soho House application, you’ll need it.

As I said before, the Soho House Membership team meets quarterly to go over applications — meaning you could not hear back from a few weeks to a few months depending on when you apply.

Their meticulous selection process ensures that every member aligns with their ethos and community values, so just trust the process!

Most importantly resist the urge to send frequent follow-up emails or calls . Bombarding the Soho House team can come off as overly eager or even pushy.

Bonus Tip: Apply now if you’re under 27

You get a discounted rate until you’re 31 if you do! Make the most of it 😉

A: It helps, but isn’t necessary! Just make sure to have a strong application.

That being said, not every applicant will receive the nod of approval as above all it’s about alignment with the club’s values and culture.

Q: How can I get into the Soho House if I don’t know anyone there?

A: While having a referral from an existing member can give you an edge, it’s not a be-all-end-all. A compelling, genuine application can still open the doors for you. Just follow the rest of the tips above!

Q: Can a professional not working in the creative or entertainment industry become a member of the Soho House?

A: Absolutely! While there’s a fondness for the creative and entertainment sectors, Soho House recognizes the value of varied expertise. If you believe you bring a fresh perspective or unique value, don’t hesitate to apply.

Also keep in mind that ‘creative’ doesn’t just mean the traditional creative jobs we think of (like artists or designers etc.).

Q: Is a Soho House membership worth it?

A: If you want ample networking opportunities, luxurious experiences, and a space for continuous learning and growth in your local community, a Soho House membership can be super valuable for personal and professional growth — at least in my opinion!

What you'll do

We pack a lot into two hours on this NYC walking tour of three of Manhattan’s most fascinating neighborhoods. We’ll start with SoHo, admiring the architecture of the Cast Iron Historic District and maybe even spotting celebrities often seen on its trendy streets.

From there, your guide whisks you off to Italy — Little Italy, that is — where you’ll soak up the sights and smells of this colorful corner of NYC. It’s not all pizza and stromboli here, though. You’ll also see former mob sites and hear all about the infamous mobster John Gotti.

Finally, stroll over to Chinatown, right next door yet a completely different cultural experience. Be dazzled by the variety of Chinese shops and signs on display as you learn about this immigrant community. Our tour ends in the former Five Points, now Columbus Park, infamous in the 19th century as one of the city’s most dangerous areas.

It’s just 2-3 miles of walking as your guide helps you navigate the streets of Manhattan so you see the best of Chinatown, Little Italy, and SoHo. Plus, our early afternoon start time keeps your morning and afternoon free for more sightseeing.

The SoHo Cast Iron Historic District Walking Tour

The SoHo Cast Iron Historic District Walking Tour

The district of South Houston, also known as the SoHo, is an important part of New York City’s tourism. This neighborhood, which became a National Historic Landmark in 1978, is a living example of America’s transformation. Throughout the years, this area has been utilized for a lot of purposes. Hence, it now preserves a rich history that is popular worldwide.

The land of SoHo has witnessed the urbanization of New York. From the time when New York City was struggling to now when it has everything, this place has played its role cast-iron.

What is SoHo?

SoHo district encompasses more than 200 historical buildings that were constructed in the latter half of the 19 th century of cast iron. This century is known for the innovation in terms of the usage of steel and the construction of skyscrapers while allowing the same traditional elegance as carved stone. Because of this innovation, you will see every block of SoHo having quite impressive architecture and portraying a sense of rich history.

If you are in New York and want to view the history and architecture of the SoHo, then you are in the right place. In this guide, we will help you get familiar with the area and how you can navigate it in the best way for a walking tour. Let’s get started.

Walking Tours

New York, Cast Iron building in SoHo

People from all over the globe come to explore the streets of South Houston. There are many ways for the tourists to enjoy the environment of the area, but going around in a car is definitely not a good one. The most popular way to get to know this place is to walk around in its streets and explore the rich history and architecture. That is why tourists from a lot of different countries book walking tours of SoHo.

This way, they get the real deal on the history of the district in the best way possible. On this tour, you will find all the remarkable places and facts of SoHo highlighted. These places are famous for their versatile history, and thus, the area can easily grab the attention of everyone.

The walking tours of the SoHo cast-iron district provide the visitors with all the details they need.

The Popular Cast Iron Buildings

SoHo is known as the house of Cast-Iron buildings. Back in the days, architects decided to use iron and steel to produce giant buildings. The metal was cheaper than stone, and it could be prepared in factories, so no heavy labor was required.

The main concept behind the all-metal building was to keep the window of expansion open. The workers would just unscrew the setup and expand it anytime they wanted. Even though now obsolete, these buildings were once a hallmark of New York.

Some of these buildings are still intact in their position. These draw major attention from the travelers and hence are famous worldwide. Included in every walking tour, some of the most important cast-iron buildings of SoHo are mentioned below:

Gunther Building

When the cast-iron buildings got popular in the field of architecture, builders started trying all sorts of experiments. This beautiful masterpiece was produced as a result of an experiment too.

Situated in the prime location of Green Street, the Gunther building is a 6-story tall building. The specialty of its construction is that it hides an optical illusion in itself. Each floor of this building is bigger than the other one, and thus this building looks a lot taller than it already is.

These days, the building is utilized for multiple purposes. The top floors have either offices or galleries while the ground floor features a private boutique. The visitors love to explore the building or otherwise, spend their time in the fashion boutique.

Scholastic Building

This building might seem like a part of all the other historic buildings, but it’s not. This 10-story building was built quite long after the cast iron became old fashioned. It replaced a garage in 1954, and the builders decided to use metal for its construction. This decision was made in order to preserve the whole cast iron vibe of the neighborhood.

It is now a headquarters for the publishing company, Scholastic Corporation. It features eye-pleasing, attention-grabbing exterior and equally wonderful interior of the offices. A lot of tourists are seen taking photos and shooting videos outside this beautiful building.

New Era Building

Covering a total land area of 90,000 square feet, this building was designed as a headquarters for The New Era Printing Company. But when it was completed, it was sold to represent the Butler Brothers Company, a mail-order business.

This amazing masterpiece of a cast-iron building had eight floors with the most balanced architecture. This building kept gaining attention because of its bright green exterior and the huge floor-to-ceiling windows. However, the building caught fire on December 29, 1927, which caused damage of about one million dollars. The fire burned for almost two hours before anyone noticed it – this caused the partial collapse of all the eight floors of the building.

This building has represented a lot of franchises. Its tenants included some fitness centers, fashion consultants, clothing designers, and the Swiss Institute.

Roosevelt Building

To generate the funding for his hospital, James H. Roosevelt, a famous estate holder, sold his house to create this building. It was designed by the very hands of Richard Morris Hunt, who was behind the design of the Statue of Liberty’s Pedestal, the Breakers in Newport, RI, for the Vanderbilt family, and the Fifth Avenue facade of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The unique thing about this building is that it is not painted over to mimic the brick made ones. It represents the whole concept of Roosevelt to maintain the originality of iron and showcasing it, as is.

This building is included in one of the last cast-iron buildings of New York City. Right now, it is home to several fashion boutiques and private shops.

Little Singer Building

This amazing 12-story structure was built in 1903 to serve as the headquarters of the famous sewing machine company called Singer.

Known as the Singer Sewing Machine Building, this Beaux-Art building (Link with Best Beaux-Arts Buildings in New York City ) was designed by Ernest Flagg. It complemented its surroundings with red-brick and green-painted ironwork. It featured long windows and the all-time signature cast-iron balconies. Its interior was carefully designed in order to provide optimum lights in the offices.

The company used it for a long time until they outgrew this headquarters and moved in the world’s tallest building (47-story) of that time in Liberty Street. Since then, this building has been called the “Little” Singer Building. However, their Liberty Street headquarters was demolished, and it became the largest building to be demolished until the Twin Towers came down.

Currently, this place features some popular fashionwear shops and has been a center of attraction for tourists. People come and spend their time in the shops of the Little Singer exploring the fashion sense of New York

Fleitmann and Co. Building

This beautiful piece of architecture was built in the year 1891 for a company of dry-goods named Fleitmann and Co. It was a six-story building located at the corner of the infamous Broome Street. When the company moved from this building in 1912, this building was converted into apartments. Alfred Zucker designed it in the Romanesque Revival style.

This building became popular for tourists because of its unique exterior. This building features a pair of arches that stretch from the pavement to the third floor and is flanked by smaller entry arches.

E.V Haughwout Building

This highly incomparable five-story building was built in the year 1857. It was the headquarters of the famous good ware company called E.V Haughwout. This building caught attention soon after it was completed. The reason for all the attention was not only its beauty, but it got famous because it was one of the first buildings to utilize metal as the core structure. This building also featured the first-ever passenger elevator of New York and hence received immense popularity.

Right now, this building is being used by a lot of co-op tenants. Tourists from all over the world are seen exploring and shopping in the shops of this historic building.

Some Fun Facts about SoHo Walking Tour:

Even though South Houston is mostly famous for its cast-iron works, this neighborhood has a lot of hidden gems as well. A walking tour to SoHo District is considered the best way to explore this place because of many reasons. One of them is that you can observe the interesting historical facts only by wandering in the streets of SoHo. Some of these important facts are mentioned below:

The Hollow Columns:    The cast-iron columns are hollow from the inside. When you knock them, you can feel the resonance on your hand.

The Old School Magnet Trick:   You can easily differentiate between a real cast-iron building and a knock-off. All you need is a magnet and you can see if it attracts the metal or not.

Sneak Peek of the Reality:   Even though the builders tried to disguise the metallic appearances of the buildings, you can still see some screws on the walls and columns.

Expansion Marks:   The area where the buildings got expanded can be seen easily hiding under some decorative touch, such as stars made from the cast iron.

The Excelsior Ironworks:   A single company, Excelsior Iron Works, produced cast iron in bulk to build these iconic structures. If looked closely, the stamps of the manufacturers can still be seen in some buildings.

Marks of Old Times:  The street signs of South Houston are different than the rest of the city. They are brown because they represent the old signs of the city.

The SoHo district has surely kept the history of New York alive that is seen clearly in this neighborhood. Above mentioned places and facts are only a few of the many interesting things that are featured in the tour.

Travelers from all the corners of the world come and visit this place. The tours of the SoHo are one of the major parts of New York’s tourism. This land has definitely played its role in the development of the country. Therefore, it deserves all the appreciation and popularity.

Earlier this month, Soho House’s newest members-only club opened in Portland, Oregon. The city is known for a creative class of a kind, but not necessarily the movers and shakers one typically associates with brand. When the opening was announced last year, Eater Portland editor Brooke Jackson-Glidden expressed some bafflement : “Sure, there’s a good amount of Intel and Nike money around here,” Jackson-Glidden wrote, “but is there really enough to justify a multi-million-dollar investment in a TikTok generation’s country club?”

Through its lounge spaces, spas, pools, screening rooms, hotels, and restaurants, Soho House has long catered to the young, city-dwelling creative class, providing them with beautiful spaces in which to be young and creative together — for a hefty fee. Annual dues can run as high as $5,000, a small price to pay to rub elbows with legit celebrities like Amy Adams, or to spot Prince Harry and Meghan Markle out on date night . (The pair’s first date apparently happened at the Soho House London location.)

And the Soho House brand comprises more than its famously members-only clubs. Soho House owns restaurants all over the world (restaurants that anyone can go to), has a burgeoning e-commerce operation, and, over the past 25-plus years, has established its presence as a global hospitality brand.

In 2021, the company went public , even as it remained every bit the private social club, a move that has yielded mixed financial results . More change came the following year when founder and CEO Nick Jones stepped down due to a cancer diagnosis. In March 2024, Soho House executive chairman Rob Burkle issued a letter to shareholders after a short-seller report suggested the company was “ facing an existential crisis .” “There has always been a lot of investor interest in Soho House, and now is no exception,” Burkle wrote. “It is one-of-a-kind. It’s not a hotel company and it’s not a food and beverage company. It’s a membership company with a lot of demand and very low attrition (which provides a large and growing base of recurring revenues in the multiple hundreds of millions).”

But despite these shifts, Soho House keeps growing . Here’s how it got started, and everything else you should know about the most famous exclusive club there is.

soho house nyc tour

Soho House’s origin story

In 1995, restaurateur Jones opened the first Soho House in London when a space above his modest French restaurant Café Boheme became available. The door to the three-story house was too small for a restaurant, Jones told design magazine Dezeen in 2016, but just the right size to form the entryway to a private club.

The members-only Soho House was meant to stand apart from the stuffy clubs that were a hallmark of the London social scene. This club would cater to the creative types increasingly flocking to the city’s Soho neighborhood, especially young people working in film and media. “We wanted it to be creative and like-minded, and for people who were at ease with themselves,” Jones told Eater in 2017.

Soho House on Greek Street was followed by the Babington House in Somerset, a country version of the first Soho House, and eight years after Soho House’s debut, it arrived in New York. “I always dreamt about opening something in New York,” Jones said. “Eventually, I had the stupidity or the balls to go off and do it.”

The New York Soho House didn’t open in Soho, but in the Meatpacking District — a then-edgy neighborhood home to Sex and the City ’s Samantha Jones, who crashed Soho House’s pool deck with a spurious membership in Season 6 . The members-only social club concept caught on in New York, but not just among the young film and media industry players that defined the brand. Somehow, the "wrong crowd" managed to infiltrate New York’s Soho House — a crowd of corporate suits.

Even after requesting that members not wear suits and ties at the club, the New York Soho House “didn’t have the right feel anymore,” as Jones told the New York Post in 2010 . Soho House culled the New York membership list in an effort to “get the club back to its creative roots,” effectively kicking out hundreds of corporate-leaning members, a move that was controversial, but effective in restoring the club to the appropriate level of cool, Jones said in the Post .

That same year, Los Angeles got its own Soho House in West Hollywood. This one, located in an office tower, quickly became the hangout for the creative set of Jones’s dreams, despite not having a pool, spa, or gym.

In a fifth-anniversary oral history of LA’s Soho House , the Hollywood Reporter called it “the most important club in Hollywood — a high-wattage magnet for A-listers and dealmakers.” Here, not just any industry member is given star treatment or even allowed into the club. The ones that do fit Soho House’s specific definition of cool — and adhere to the “no-assholes rule” — are granted access to the “fantasyland among the clouds,” as The Americans actor and former Soho House London membership committee member Matthew Rhys described it to the Hollywood Reporter .

In 2012, billionaire Ron Burkle bought a majority stake in the the Soho House Group and helped finance its international expansion. In recent years, Soho House has cemented its foothold in hospitality the world, opening Soho Houses and public-facing restaurants in cities like Toronto, Barcelona, and Istanbul. Soho House now has 43 clubs and an extensive restaurant portfolio, including London restaurants Dean Street Townhouse and Cafe Monico and international chains Cecconi’s and Dirty Burger.

What to expect at a Soho House

Visiting a Soho House club is like taking a trip to your ubercool aunt’s place — if she charged you for her (reportedly excellent) chocolate chip cookies. To create the spaces that thousands of people clamor to work, eat, and sit in, Soho House designers prize timeless comfort over contemporary trends. “When we design a place it has to feel like it has atmosphere with no one in it,” Jones told Dezeen .

Each club is a reflection of its city: The West Hollywood Soho House boasts spectacular LA views and creatively NSFW bathroom wallpaper ; Soho House 76 Dean Street is located in one of the oldest townhouses in Westminster; and the Berlin house occupies a building that once served as the headquarters of the Hitler Youth . The design at each of these, and at the other houses, favors vintage and bespoke items that are meant to feel locally sourced. The Portland Soho House, for another example, features 140 pieces of art made by local artists.

Aesthetics are so important to the Soho House DNA that, since 2012, Soho House has employed an in-house team of between 50 and 60 designers and architects at offices in New York, LA, and London to design the interiors, furniture and other elements that go into each new Soho House build. In 2016, Jones made it possible to shop these design elements with Soho Home , an e-commerce site. Now even nonmember plebes can buy the $700 pink leather footstools and $38 crystal Champagne coupes that provide the certain something that makes Soho House the perfect place for creative types to Network and Chill.

What are the Soho House membership rules?

Soho House is notorious for its selective club membership policy. A membership committee, composed of club members, decides who is and isn’t granted access to each specific club. (So, it’s entirely subjective.) Kim Kardashian and the Real Housewives are in the same category as lawyers and hedge fund managers, as former membership director Tim Geary told the Hollywood Reporter — both lacking in the je ne sais quoi that deems one worthy of Soho House.

The club doesn’t view its focus on the right career and creativity as exclusionary. On the contrary, the way Soho House chooses its members apparently allows for “greater community.” The Soho House website explains: “Unlike other members’ clubs, which often focus on wealth and status, we aim to assemble communities of members that have something in common: namely, a creative soul.”

Jones said he’d like to think that the club is “inclusive,” telling Eater, “We've been doing it for 22 years and as the world changes and as people's work changes, I think the bond to somewhere like [Soho House] increases all the time.”

To join the tribe of “like-minded individuals” that is Soho House, applicants must provide a recent headshot, a one-time application fee, and, of course, an accounting of their career and interests. And although cultural capital takes precedence over monetary capital at Soho House, upon acceptance, members will pay.

Members can choose to join just their local Soho House or opt in to access at Soho Houses around the world. The price of each varies based on location; at the new Portland Soho House annual local membership is $1,950 and the Every House membership will run you $4,500, while those with a home base Soho House in New York will spend $2,850 for access to just that Soho House and $5,200 for access to all Soho Houses.

To keep the clubs young and, thus, hip, members under 27 get a 50 percent discount on the annual membership until they turn 30. Those who live in select Soho House-approved cities without an actual Soho House, like Aspen, Milan, and Tokyo, can purchase an every-club membership for $2,500. For an additional fee, some Soho Houses also grant children access to club facilities.

In 2017, Soho House introduced a membership tier that grants access to Soho Houses when traveling for those who live in cities without a Soho House. It’s $3,700 for residents of U.S. cities without a Soho House.

To maintain just the right vibe, Soho House only accepts new members periodically, racking up waitlists that are reportedly tens of thousands of people long. A recent New York Times article put the number at over 100,000. Pierre Dourneau, former director of North American operations for Soho House, once described it as “a very, very healthy waiting list,” and notes that Soho House prizes “quality over quantity” when it comes to its members. But fret not: Nonmembers can enter Soho House as guests of paying members (as long as they stay close to their designated member, according to official Soho House rules ). Nonmembers are also eligible to book Soho House hotel rooms and can visit one of the brand’s many public-facing restaurants.

Who are Soho House’s famous members?

Given its creative leanings, Soho House clubs are a home away from home for bona fide celebrities, as well as actor-slash-model-slash-socialites and other creative-souled individuals who can afford the dues. Soho House has a pretty strict no press policy and members are forbidden from identifying fellow members on social media. (They’re not even allowed to describe Soho House events on social media.)

But in addition to Harry and Meghan, other names of supposed members have leaked out: Leonardo DiCaprio’s affiliation pops up often in gossip pages, as does Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel’s. A recent Soho House Awards event — which “recognize(s) and spotlight(s) the incredible work of creative talents across our membership” — drew Ayo Edibiri, Emma Watson, and Paul Mescal as attendees. In 2015, The Hollywood Reporter got several famous West Hollywood members to go on record with their Soho House adoration, including actress Amy Adams, Girls showrunner Jenni Konner, director Paul Haggis, and screenwriter Danny Strong.

What was the Soho House murder?

The hotel at the New York Soho House was the site of a headline-making murder. In 2010, swimsuit designer Sylvie Cachay was found dead in a Soho House hotel bathroom. During the 2013 trial, stories of the “ Soho House Killer ”, Nicholas Brooks, Cachay’s boyfriend and son of an award-winning composer, briefly dominated headlines.

Does Soho House have restaurants? Is Cecconi’s a Soho House restaurant?

The Soho House brand is bigger than its clubs. The Soho House portfolio now includes more than a dozen different restaurants, many with multiple locations in cities with a Soho House club. Like the clubs, these restaurants are deliberately branded in carefully chosen, often transportive spaces. The barriers to entry, though, are much lower, and in addition to being free to enter, most restaurants have relatively affordable menus.

Jones, who got his start as a restaurateur, describes restaurants as his “first love.” As the clubs have expanded, Soho House’s restaurants have provided an additional recruiting ground for Soho House & Co staff, as well as more places for both members and regular folk to experience the brand (and contribute to its cash flow). “It's great to keep sharp in the public arena, and it’s also fun and interesting,” Jones says. Beyond the cool factor Soho House demands, there’s no unifying thread through the many restaurants Soho House now owns. “I like to think that they have the same ‘yes’ culture, that they're not pretentious,” says Jones. “They are buzzy, they're fun. People have a good experience.”

Just about every kind of casual restaurant format has gotten the Soho House treatment. In London, Soho House has a standalone diner (Electric Diner) and a French brasserie (High Road Brasserie), among others. There have been restaurant chains serving pizza (Pizza East), burgers (Dirty Burger), and rotisserie chicken (Chicken Shop). Some of the Soho House restaurants, like Venice-born Cecconi’s, were existing restaurants that Soho House took over, but others were expressly designed to feed the urban, creative class Soho House serves.

There’s no hard and fast rule for when and where a Soho House restaurant will open. “Sites come my way and our way, and we search around and work out whether it's the right location,” Jones explains. Although Soho House restaurants are concentrated in the U.K., like the clubs, they are decidedly international (the Allis, a lounge and bar named after industrialist and philanthropist Charles Allis, only has locations in Istanbul and Chicago, for example).

Some of the public-facing restaurants open because a Soho House club site has the right infrastructure for one. When Chicago got a Soho House in 2014 it came along with three restaurants open to nonmembers on the ground floor of the building: The Allis, Chicken Shop plus Fox Bar, and Pizza East. (Since then, Chicken Shop and Pizza East have shuttered.) Despite having a Soho House since 2003, New York just got its very first Soho House restaurant in 2017 when Cecconi’s opened in Dumbo. Cecconi’s is the most geographically widespread Soho House restaurant brand, with 13 locations.

soho house nyc tour

How is the Soho House brand growing?

After more than 25 years in business, the Soho House ethos is the same. “We'd like to give people nice things that they want: a nice bed, a nice plate of food, a nice drink, a nice massage,” Jones told Eater. The members, however, have changed slightly. When Dourneau was a server at the original Soho House, there were more TV presenters, actors, and people who worked in film and theater, he says. These days, “the people who are coming out of colleges and coming out of schools are generally more creative and like-minded than they were 20 years ago,” according to Jones in 2017. “Even though it might not be about film, I think that like-minded creativeness covers all sorts of individuals now.” What exactly that means for membership is up to each House membership committee.

According to Dourneau, choosing where those Houses open all starts with the right property. “We always start something from the building; the building always dictates, and the building should always have some kind of ‘wow’ factor,” he said when interviewed in 2017. “Whether it's the bones itself or the view or what you can add to it with an extra rooftop or extra basement, or whether it's the history.”

The Soho House in Portland occupies a former artists’ cooperative. A New York Times a rticle notes that the artists who once worked from the space are not the membership base the club is courting. Instead, the new Soho House seems to be banking on professionals in creative-adjacent industries, such as chefs, tech workers, business owners, and as Jackson-Glidden noted, Nike employees. “We’re trying to reach a crowd that’s creative in their souls and like-minded,” Andrew Carnie, Soho House’s chief executive, said.

More clubs will likely come with more restaurants. Soho House has grown the Cecconi’s brand. And because Jones loves food (and likely also because the food and alcohol sold at restaurants and in clubs generate revenue), Soho House is also focusing on improving the dining options for members. They have an in-house training program for restaurant staff called Cookhouse and a bar recruitment and training program, House Tonic.

The new Portland Soho house includes a restaurant with a menu from chef Matt Sigler, of the now-closed Portland restaurant Renata . According to Eater Portland , menu items include Pacific Northwestern oysters with pink peppercorn mignonette, salads made with celery root chips or puffed chickpeas, and house-made pastas. There’s also a wood-fired for grilling meat and vegetables — all locally sourced, of course.

Update: 3/22/2024: This story was originally published August 15, 2017. It has been updated throughout to reflect the latest information.

Inside a Japanese Tea House in SoHo

Sōrate a tea house in SoHo

Italian and Japanese traditions, architecture, and culinary influences converge inside this tranquil Manhattan tea house. Founded by Italian entrepreneur Silvia Mella in collaboration with Tea Master Keiko Kitazawa, the blend of cultural influences can even be found in the name. Sōrate, which means “calm down” in Venetian dialect, also contains the Japanese word, “sora,” which means “sky.” Inside the intimate space, visitors can sit down for traditional tea and matcha ceremonies, or grab a drink and snack to go!

Founder-Led Tea Tasting at Sorate

Sōrate is located at 103 Sullivan Street inside an early 20th-century building. The interior design by Venezia-based Studio Architecture Amaa blends contemporary aesthetics with historic details, such as the original tin ceiling. The cozy space is swathed in serene neutral tones and natural materials like wood and stone. A long counter runs the length of the space with room for just four patrons. This limited capacity allows for meaningful interactions and personalized attention. The overall effect is a warm and inviting atmosphere that beckons you inside from the large storefront window.

Sōrate a tea house in SoHo

On the menu at Sōrate, customers will find ceremonial-grade matcha and a variety of high-grade green teas sourced from a single farm in Ujitawara-cho. As the Sōrate website notes, “This small countryside town in Kyoto prefecture is where the farmer Nagatani Soen invented the method of manufacturing Japanese green tea in the middle of the Edo period.”

Customers can choose to enjoy their matcha prepared the traditional way—with warm water—or with a modern twist with a choice of milk, served hot or iced. A variety of teas including Sencha, Gyokuro, Hojicha, and Genmaicha along with specialty drinks like a Sparkling Iced Matcha with a hint of yuzu (a common refreshment in Japan), and caffeine-free options such as Kombucha are also available.

Matcha

To accompany these beverages, Sōrate offers a selection of light wagashi or traditional tea ceremony sweets. Indulge in matcha-infused desserts or grab a Sorashi Lunch Box, an original creation that combines Italian ingredients like prosciutto, robiola cheese, and freshly grated bottarga, with Japanese elements of velvety black sesame tofu, pureed nori, pickled radish, and candied yuzu.

What sets Sōrate apart from other tea houses—besides its decor and high-quality teas—is its dedication to sharing tea rituals. On a solo road trip through the Japanese countryside, Mella noticed that frequent tea breaks brought a sense of serenity and stability to her day. This ritual was reminiscent of daily Italian habits she was familiar with back home, like a morning espresso. She was inspired to take what she learned in Japan, and what we already knew from Italy, to create a space where people could take part in calming rituals in the United States.

Owner Silvia Mella at Sorate

At Sōrate, guests can join a variety of tea ceremonies conducted by Tea Master Keiko Kitazawa and tastings led by Mella. At these experiences, guests will learn about the intricate rituals and traditions of tea preparation while tasting a variety of beverages and food offerings. Learn more and book your experience here .

Mella describes Sōrate as her “love letter to Japan which taught me mindfulness, and Italy, where I learned to appreciate the beauty in all things.”

Join Untapped New York Insiders for a founder-led tea tasting on March 28th or April 9th where you’ll get to sample a variety of teas and learn more of Mella’s story!
