Justin Hayward has joined the upcoming touring production of Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds – Alive on Stage! , which will return to UK arenas in 2022.

The American producer’s stage adaptation of his own album version of the H.G. Wells science fiction classic of 1898 has been an immense success since its 2006 debut, following the multi-platinum popularity of the 1978 record itself. Hayward was the featured vocalist on its signature hit, “Forever Autumn,” a Top 5 UK single. The album’s estimated worldwide sales stand at 15 million.

Hayward appeared in the 2006 production, reprising his original role on the album as the Sung Thoughts of the Journalist, and has appeared in other incarnations since, including a tour marking the 30th anniversary of the album, in 2009. “I’m very happy to be back as part of The War of the Worlds family,” says the much-loved singer-songwriter and Moody Blues frontman, “this time with Jeff’s production The Life Begins Again Tour , coming to arenas through March and April, 2022.

“Wherever I go in the world, he continues,‘Forever Autumn,’ along with ‘Nights in White Satin,’ is one of the songs that people know and love, and as a singer it’s a joy to perform. This production is sure to be spectacular, and the music as wonderful as ever. I’m looking forward to it all very much.”

UK dates for The Life Begins Again Tour run from March 23 to April 9, 2022, when it will conclude with two shows at London’s The O2. There is also a show at Amsterdam’s Ziggo Dome on April 10. More information about the tour is available here .

One Summer Day

Hayward, meanwhile, is continuing his current solo tour of the US, which began on September 13 in Chicago and last night (3) visited Sellersville, PA. The itinerary includes several City Winery venues, including in Nashville tomorrow (5) and Atlanta on Thursday. The tour concludes on October 15 in Clearwater, FL. His most recent release was the double-sided single in spring 2020 featuring “One Summer Day” and “My Juliette.”

Jeff Wayne announces follow up to War of the Worlds Immersive Experience

The new production will move to a bigger location in London.

war of the worlds tour

Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds – The Immersive Experience has announced plans to move to a bigger venue in London next year, with an all-new production.

As the current incarnation continues at London’s former Metal Exchange on Leadenhall Street, creator Jeff Wayne confirmed the new version will feature familiar characters in a series of new scenarios, culminating in a “breathtaking balloon journey to Mars”.

The current experience has grossed more than £8million to date and will remain at its existing location until December 2023 as work continues on the new production.

Wayne commented: “When we first opened our immersive experience, it was only booked for a three-month run, yet great reviews, multiple awards, word-of-mouth attendances by existing and new fans have been so taken by it, here we are over four years later, and still going strong.

“We’re most excited to collaborate with the hottest specialist companies, immersive producers and venue owners, to continue to stun our audiences.”

Today’s announcement coincides with the 45th anniversary of the album Jeff Wayne’s Musical Version of The War of The Worlds , adapted from the sci-fi novel by H. G. Wells.

Review: JEFF WAYNE'S THE WAR OF THE WORLDS, O2 Arena

Jeff Wayne's 2022 Tour takes its final bow in London

pixeltracker

Of all the retellings of H. G Wells ' alien-invasion novella, The War of The Worlds , Jeff Wayne 's musical version, is perhaps the most popular.

Beginning as a concept album in 1978, the rock opera quickly became a commercial success. In fact, in 2018, it was listed as one of the UK's bestselling studio albums of all time - selling upwards of 16 million copies.

As a result, it's hardly surprising that the music is the star of the show - with Wayne being joined on stage by the Black Smoke band and the ULLAdubULLA Strings. While the showing began with a little more of a thud than a bang (the result of a technical error that required the show to restart, for what, Jeff claimed, was the first time in 16 years), they quickly bounced back. Despite the size of the venue, true immersion is created through a heavily layered score, impressive lighting, and powerhouse vocals from the cast. To put it simply, there's nothing as powerful as live music.

This production is no stranger to the stage, with a new tour commencing every few years. However, over the past decade, film giant Liam Neeson has remained a constant presence as the narrator, albeit in the form of a voiceover and holograph. The voiceover adds nuance and tension to the score, creating a clearer narrative for the audience to follow. However, there is something to be desired in revamping some of the digital tech used in the show, regarding both the holograph of Neeson (which is dwarfed on the stage) and the accompanying visuals played on a big screen behind the orchestra.

A talented cast rounds out the production, showcasing how the alien invasion impacts human lives on earth. Strictly Come Dancing's Kevin Clifton gives an endearing performance as the Artillery Man - particularly during his Act Two solo, "Brave New World".

Similarly striking is Nathan James , reclaiming his role as the voice of humanity for a second time. James has the spirit and presence of a true rockstar, taking to the stage with confidence and charisma that leaves the audience enthralled. Claire Richards (of Steps fame) gives a strong vocal performance in the role of the Parson's Wife and is nicely paired with Duncan James as the Parson in their duet "The Spirit of Man".

The War of the Worlds is a truly cinematic experience, aided by spectacular special effects throughout - including lighting design from Tim Routledge. Regardless of whether or not audiences are fans of the original source material or are entering this world anew, it makes for a thoroughly entertaining evening - one that may have you looking a little closer into the night sky on your way home. After all, who knows what is really lurking out in the darkness?

While this performance marked curtains down for the 2022 tour, you can find more information about the future of the show here

Gen. Eisenhower's grandson educates tour group for D-Day anniversary | Georgiana Vines

David Eisenhower , grandson of Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower , Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Force in Europe during World War II, says Americans went to Normandy, France, 80 years ago to help liberate the French from the Nazis because they understood what a free country means.

There are times and situations where people make sacrifices to show they have respect for human values and dignity, he said.

Eisenhower spoke on June 4 at Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial at Colleville-sur-Mer, France, where thousands of American soldiers are buried, in a special ceremony at a pole where an American flag flies. It was included in a two-week trip to Celtic lands and the 80th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy that I took, with veterans in the group joining Eisenhower to place a wreath at the flagpole during the ceremony.

Eisenhower and his wife, Julie Nixon Eisenhower , were guests of Gohagan and Company, a travel agency in Chicago, that arranged the trip.

The ceremony at the flagpole was a substitute for another spot at the cemetery that became unavailable as preparations were made for the actual celebration of D-Day on June 6. Some of the five landing areas of the Allied Forces in 1944 also were closed to all but locals and dignitaries like U.S. President Joe Biden , King Charles III of the United Kingdom, French President Emmanuel Macron, and their wives. But the small villages in both Normandy and parts of England had activities before and after the official D-Day celebration that brought tourists to the area. Many American flags were flying throughout the communities during our visit.

At the June 4 ceremony, we sang the U.S. national anthem; as part of his talk, Eisenhower read names of our group’s family members who had participated in D-Day; and then we had a moment of silence at the end. Many tears were shed as we stood near the white marble crosses and Stars of David above the graves.

Clyde Maxwell , a retired veteran who assisted Eisenhower in placing the wreath, said this: “A very moving experience. I sincerely regret that most of our young people today have no appreciation for the sacrifices these young men, some as young as 16, made for our country so that we might enjoy the many freedoms we have today.” Maxwell, an 83-year-old retired lieutenant colonel of the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps, lives in Rabun Gap, Georgia.

Dwight David Eisenhower II is more than the 76-year-old grandson of the late general. The grandfather, who died in 1969 at age 78, also was the U.S. president in 1953-61 but preferred to be remembered for his wartime service. The younger Eisenhower, for whom the U.S. presidential retreat Camp David in Maryland is named, has taken advantage of his place in history and become a noted historian of World War II and the Cold War.

His 1986 bestseller, “Eisenhower at War 1943-1945,” was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in history. He is a public policy fellow at the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism at the University of Southern California and the School of Arts and Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania. A book recommended for our trip was “Going Home to Glory: A Memoir of Life with Dwight D. Eisenhower, 1961-1969,” written by the grandson with his wife, the daughter of the late President Richard Nixon .

The Eisenhowers joined the tour sponsored by Gohagan as we cruised on Le Dumont d’Urville, a French cruise line owned by Ponant, and David Eisenhower gave a lecture, “Triumph and Tragedy,” on a day we were at sea. Once we got to the Normandy region, our group was spread out on six buses, with the Eisenhowers eventually joining each bus to answer questions and make comments about the area.

The couple was very approachable. On the day the tour went to Omaha Beach to walk the shore or along a sidewalk that took us to German bunkers left as their own monuments, Susan Crabtree of Knoxville, my roommate on the trip, and I came upon David and Julie Eisenhower talking to some of our travel companions on the sidewalk. They graciously agreed to be photographed by all who made the request.

When we arrived at Omaha Beach, the tide was high. David Eisenhower observed while we were being photographed, “The tide has already gone out several hundred yards since we arrived.” The tide was a factor when the troops landed on the beaches 80 years ago.

David Eisenhower’s talk aboard the ship was about his grandfather’s key role in the success of the Normandy invasion as well as issues that were unsettled after World War II and others that arose that influenced future presidential campaigns. He described his grandfather’s planning and supervision of the Normandy campaign as methodical and said he was a man of great determination. The five-star general, nicknamed “Ike,” is a revered figure in France and England.

A new statue of Gen. Eisenhower was dedicated in the town of Sainte-Mère-Église the day before we visited on June 4, our local guide told us. Flowers arrangements were at the base of the statue in a show of appreciation. On the day we visited the town, the streets were full of people, some in uniform for reenactments, while others were driving period jeeps. Street vendors abounded and pubs were busy.

Then in England on June 6, a visit was made to the village of Southwick , which became the forward base of the high command in the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force. Eisenhower was known to quaff the local ale at the Golden Lion Pub, which is still in business. Other commanders there when decisions were made about the Normandy invasion were British Field Marshal Bernard Law “Monty” Montgomery and British naval officer Bertram Home Ramsay .

The village was preparing for post-June 6 activities, including taping X’s on windows as the English people did during World War II to keep the glass from shattering if bombs hit.

On the ship, Eisenhower was not the only speaker, with other talks on Anglo-American relations, immigration and ethnicity, and 19th-century American history. Ken Gormley , president and professor of law at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, discussed President Eisenhower’s challenges with McCarthyism, the Little Rock Crisis and America’s conflict over civil rights. As president, Eisenhower’s approach was “the middle way,” or even a “quiet way,” which he considered more effective, Gormley said. He is considered an authority on American presidents and the U.S. Constitution.

Another speaker was Allen Packwood , director of the Sir Winston Churchill Archives Centre at Churchill College, University of Cambridge. He discussed the complexity of the Normandy invasion and Churchill’s leadership at a time when the British prime minister “didn’t want to fight in France. He wanted to defend Britain,” he said.

Packwood was in Knoxville in 2006 as part of a program on Churchill sponsored by the now University of Tennessee’s Howard H. Baker Jr. School of Public Policy and Public Affairs . Packwood will return to Knoxville in July to speak at a program on World War II sponsored by the East Tennessee Historical Society. The society’s CEO, Warren Dockter , is a former research fellow at Clare Hall at Cambridge and said he considers Packwood “a mentor.”

B-29 World War II bomber flies into Syracuse for public tours and rides

S yracuse, N.Y. — A B-29 Superfortress from World War II — the type of plane that dropped the atomic bombs on Japan — flew into Syracuse on Monday for public tours and rides.

The bomber, along with a P-51 Mustang fighter and other World War II aircraft, came to Syracuse Hancock International Airport from around the country as part of the Commemorative Air Force’s AirPower History Tour.

The B-29, one of only two in the world still flying, arrived at 11:40 a.m.. It did a pass over the airport and then over downtown Syracuse before landing and parking on the tarmac in front of a hangar at 211 Tuskegee Road on the south side of the airport.

The planes will be available for public tours at the hangar Wednesday through Sunday, June 19-23, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

In addition, the B-29 will provide rides at 9 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Other aircraft rides will be available each day. A T-6, a PT-13 and an RC-45J will be offering rides all five days. The P-51D Mustang fighter will be available for rides Friday through Sunday.

Cockpit tours of the B-29 will be available each day beginning at 9 a.m., except on Saturday and Sunday when they will begin at noon.

Admission to the event is $20 for adults, $10 for children ages 11-17 and free for children 10 and under. Admission includes cockpit tours of the B-29. A $10 parking fee will be charged by the airport, with the proceeds going to support the Syracuse Airport Military Courtesy Room.

For information on the fees for the rides and to book one in advance, go to AirPowerTour.org .

The Commemorative Air Force is a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving World War II planes in honor of the crews that flew them during the war and the workers who built them. The organization puts on 25 to 30 shows a year throughout the country.

The B-29 owned by the organization was delivered to the Army Air Force in April 1945, four months before the war ended, and was not flown in combat. It was used after the war as a trainer until it was decommissioned in 1960.

The Commemorative Air Force discovered the plane parked at a U.S. Navy weapons center in the California desert in 1971, acquired it from the government and restored it, cannibalizing parts from other B-29s found with it.

In 1974, it was christened Fifi. The pilots who fly it and the crews who maintain it are volunteers.

“We’re nonprofit,” said Jacques Robitaille, tour leader for the group. “We receive no government funds. Our only revenue is from ride flights and gate admission.”

The B-29, the successor to the B-17 and B-24, was introduced late in the war and used primarily in the Pacific for raids on Japan. The bomber was state-of-the-art for its time, featuring a computer-assisted fire-control system that allowed one gunner and a fire-control officer to direct four remote machine gun turrets.

“The B-29 was the largest and most technically advanced aircraft of its time,” said Robitaille. “It was the next generation in aircraft design. It was designed to fly high and far.”

George Lucas based the greenhouse-style window of the Millennium Falcon in his Star Wars movies on the B-29′s cockpit.

World of Warcraft: The War Within Is Coming – Why Now Is the Time to Play for the First Time

' src=

World of Warcraft ’s The War Within expansion got a release date during the Xbox Games Showcase 2024 – coming to PC via Battle.net on August 26, this expansion will be the first part of a trilogy of expansions known as The Worldsoul Saga, diving deep into the mythology of World of Warcraft.

To celebrate, Official Xbox Podcast host Malik Prince teamed up with World of Warcraft community manager and WoWCast host Bethany Stout to interview World of Warcraft Executive Producer Holly Longdale and Game Director Ion Hazzikostas, finding out more about this expansion, and why now is a perfect moment to jump into the game for the very first time. You can watch the entire interview below, or read on for all the key details.

Of course, it’s something new to see World of Warcraft on an Xbox podcast. “We’re just super excited to be part of Xbox now, coming from Blizzard,” said Longdale. “And we’re representing a PC game, World of Warcraft , so we’re super excited to be here, and we want to share with all the Xbox fans that we’re here to stay. We’ve been around for 20 [years] – we’re not your dad’s game, we’re not your mom’s game – and we’re going to be around for 20 more at least. We want to invite everybody into this incredible experience.”

Part of that invitation comes with the game’s free trial, allowing you to explore the world and level up all the way to level 20. But there’s a new option to do so with the Welcome to Azeroth bundle . Including everything players need to begin their adventure in Azeroth, this offers the current expansion, Dragonflight, a level 60 character boost, and 60 days of game time for $24.99 USD.

That bundle has been carefully-chosen to help you get ready for the upcoming expansion: “We’ve really done a lot over the last 20 years to ensure that 20 years of content is not 20 years of obstacles that you have to overcome to get to the latest, coolest thing,” said Hazzikostas. “When War Within comes out, Dragonflight, the current expansion, will be what you play through to level up and jump right into War Within. That will give you the power, give you an understanding of the mechanics, you’ll have a dragon companion that you’ll earn very early on […] and it’s also going to prepare you story-wise for what The War Within is going to bring.”

It all makes The War Within a great marker for when to start playing WoW – as the beginning of a brand-new, three-expansion saga, this is a new story that even seasoned veterans will be discovering for the first time. And that story is already being told ahead of the expansion’s August 26 launch:

“In the lead-up to War Within, there’s already stuff going on in World of Warcraft at this very minute,” said Hazzikostas. “Xal’atath – the villain that you saw at the end of that [Xbox Games Showcase] cinematic – has emerged into the world, and her tendrils are branching throughout Azeroth, weaving dark plans that are going to threaten us. It’s exciting to have that build-up to that launch moment.”

war of the worlds tour

When it does kick off, The War Within will introduce brand new zones to explore: leading players under the surface of Azeroth into Dwarven caverns, taking them to the beautiful Hallowfall Canyon (with airship travel to get around), and into Azj-Kahet, the home of one of World of Warcraft ’s most powerful civilizations, the Nerubian Empire. Incidentally, Nerubians are an intelligent race of arachnids  – and The War Within will offer an arachnophobia option to replace their models with (friendlier-looking) crabs.

We’ll also get a new feature called Warbands, which will allow players to switch between multiple characters without having to replay swathes of the expansion. Delves will offer a new dungeon experience, allowing for smaller, shorter dungeon crawls, even for solo players. For bigger dungeons, which often require you to play with others, The War Within will offer AI characters for those who can’t play with a party.

The War Within is doubly special for Blizzard, as it marks the 20 th anniversary of World of Warcraft , and it’s an opportunity to look at how different kinds of players approach the game, and build something for all of them: “This is a huge year for World of Warcraft in general,” said Hazzikostas. “It’s really humbling to reflect upon my own relationship with the game, but really just to look back at the journey that we’ve taken as a development team with our community. We’re a game that has grown and evolved as our community has.

war of the worlds tour

“I think not everyone has that time to spare these days – we’re all busy, we all have a lot of responsibilities, but we want to maintain a relationship, or build a new one, with this world that’s been special for so many people. [It’s] evolved over the years to keep that depth for those who want to seek it, but [we’re] making sure that there’s a wide range of levels of commitment and relationship you can have with the game and still have an epic, fulfilling experience.”

“What you saw [in the Xbox Games Showcase] cinematic was a celebration of the past 20 years, and the journey of our story over the past 20 years,” said Longdale. If you want to join in those celebrations – whether you’re a committed player, someone looking to return, or a total newcomer – now’s the time.

Michigan, CUNY didn't suitably assess if Israel-Hamas war protests made environment hostile, US says

Collin Binkley

Associated Press

WASHINGTON – The University of Michigan and the City University of New York did not adequately investigate complaints about antisemitic or anti-Palestinian harassment linked to campus protests over the Israel-Hamas war and other incidents, according to the results of investigations by the U.S. Education Department announced Monday.

These are the first investigations to reach a conclusion among dozens launched by the Education Department since Oct. 7, the day Hamas launched a surprise attack on Israel .

Recommended Videos

The department's Office of Civil Rights investigated 75 instances of alleged discrimination and harassment at the University of Michigan based on shared Jewish ancestry and shared Palestinian or Muslim ancestry. The investigation found that the university's responses did not meet its Title VI requirements to remedy the hostile environment.

In one instance, when a Jewish student reported being called out for viewing a graduate student instructor’s social media post about pro-Palestinian topics, the university told the student that “formal conflict resolution is not a path forward at this time,” because the incident occurred on social media.

In another instance, when a student who participated in a pro-Palestinian protest was called a “terrorist,” the university said it held “restorative circles” to address the incident but did not take further action.

In its resolution agreement, the University of Michigan agreed to administer a climate assessment, implement additional training and revise its policies as necessary. It also agreed to monitoring by the Office of Civil Rights through the end of the 2026 school year, reporting its responses to future incidents of discrimination to the department.

“The university condemns all forms of discrimination, racism and bias in the strongest possible terms," University of Michigan President Santa J. Ono said in a statement. "We continually work to educate our community around the rights and privileges of free speech to ensure that debate does not tip over into targeted harassment or bullying. This agreement reflects the university’s commitment to ensuring it has the tools needed to determine whether an individual’s acts or speech creates a hostile environment, and taking the affirmative measures necessary to provide a safe and supportive educational environment for all.”

The department also announced the resolution of nine pending complaints against schools in the City University of New York system, dating back to the 2019-20 academic year.

Those incidents include harassment and disparate treatment of students based on shared Jewish, Palestinian, Arab, Muslim or South Asian ancestry.

The university system agreed to reopen or initiate investigations into discrimination complaints and provide the Office of Civil Rights with the results and report any remedial action the university would take. The resolution also included increased training for both employees and security officers on campus, as well as a climate survey and third-party review of non-discrimination policies.

“Colleges serve as beacons of free speech and expression, but the safety of our students, staff and faculty is paramount,” CUNY Chancellor Félix V. Matos Rodríguez said in a statement. “CUNY is committed to providing an environment that is free from discrimination and hate and these new steps will ensure that there is consistency and transparency in how complaints are investigated and resolved.”

Complaints of antisemitism and Islamophobia have led to inquiries at more than 100 universities and school districts, including Harvard and Yale, community colleges and public schools from Los Angeles to suburban Minneapolis.

The complaints vary widely but all accuse schools of violating Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color or national origin. Colleges and schools are required to protect students from discrimination, and when they don't, the Education Department can invoke penalties up to termination of federal money.

Protests over the Israel-Hamas war upended the final weeks of the school year at many campuses across the country, with some cancelling graduation ceremonies or moving classes online after Pro-Palestinian protesters set up encampments in campus spaces .

The protests have tested schools as they aim to balance free speech rights and the safety of students. The Education Department has issued guidance detailing schools' responsibilities around Title VI, but the results of the agency’s investigations could provide a clearer line showing where political speech crosses into harassment.

Finding that boundary has been a struggle for colleges as they grapple with rhetoric that has different meaning to different people. Some chants commonly used by pro-Palestinian activists are seen by some as antisemitic, including “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free” and “intifada revolution.”

Meanwhile, some complaints say Arab and Muslim students have faced abuses only to be ignored by campus officials. At Harvard, the Education Department is investigating separate complaints, one over alleged antisemitism and the other over alleged Islamophobia.

"Hate has no place on our college campuses — ever,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement. “Sadly, we have witnessed a series of deeply concerning incidents in recent months. There’s no question that this is a challenging moment for school communities across the country.”

More investigations are expected to be resolved in the coming weeks, but Cardona said his agency is struggling to keep up with the influx of cases.

Republicans have rejected requests to increase money for the Office for Civil Rights in recent years, while the average case load increased to 42 per investigator in 2023. Without more money, that figure could increase to more than 70 cases per investigator, Cardona has said.

“We are desperately in need of additional support to make sure we can investigate the cases that we have in front of us,” Cardona told members of the House in May.

On average, cases take about six to eight months to resolve. The vast majority of the agency’s civil rights investigations end with voluntary resolutions. Schools usually promise to resolve any lingering problems and take steps to protect students in the future.

While the Education Department investigates, several colleges and school districts have separately been called before Congress to answer allegations of antisemitism. Republicans have held a series of hearings on the issue, grilling leaders accused of tolerating antisemitism.

The hearings contributed to the resignations of some college leaders, including Liz Magill at the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard’s Claudine Gay , who was also embroiled in accusations of plagiarism.
