Best Safari Lodges in Namibia

Here’s a look at our top 10 picks for best safari lodges in Namibia and why they made the cut. A glimpse into some of Namibia’s most luxury safari lodges, all so entirely different and equally as impressive for different reasons.

  • Shipwreck Lodge
  • Sossusvlei Desert Lodge
  • Omaanda Lodge
  • Onguma The Fort
  • Little Ongava
  • Wolwedans Mountain View Suite
  • Serra Cafema
  • Hoanib Valley Camp
  • Mowani Mountain Camp Private Suite
  • Okonjima Villa

The settings are naturally exclusive. The lodges and camps exude unique character and offer top-notch service and five star views that blend effortlessly into the surrounds.

We’ve happily explored all the options first-hand over the past 30 years to make sure those that top our list as the best safari lodges in Namibia will exceed your expectations:

1. Shipwreck Lodge

safari lodges in namibia

Shipwreck Lodge is the only lodge situated in the Skeleton Coast National Park . In an area barren and desolate between the towering sand dunes of an ancient desert and the tumultuous Atlantic Ocean. Watch as the fog rolls in off the coast. Eerie and mystifying and amidst it all, a luxury lodge seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Shipwrecked. The scattered, luxurious wooden cabins sit on the sand dunes looking out onto one of the most evocative and hauntingly romantic landscapes of Namibia.

Why we love it:

  • Explore the remote Skeleton Coast National Park
  • Unique in design and location - a one-of-a-kind lodge
  • Deserted and desolate beaches all to yourself
  • Track elusive desert-adapted wildlife including elephants, desert lions and brown hyena
  • Untouched wilderness in one of Namibia’s most isolated destinations
“Shipwreck Lodge was a highlight, not only because of the luxury that you get to stay in, but because of the stunning area.  The barren coast plus the lush gorge in the dry river bed and the oasis in the middle of the dunes. It is just too beautiful for words.” – Ashlee, Travel Expert

2. Sossusvlei Desert Lodge

safari lodges in namibia

The setting here is equally as special as the lodge. An endless desert landscape of sand dunes and distant mountains is enough to lure you in. You’re on the edge of the world’s oldest desert on a pristine private reserve bordering the NamibRand Nature Reserve . From the main deck or the plunge pool from your private suite, the view is spectacular. All luxurious, all inclusive, Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is contemporary and elegant in its design that effortlessly blends into the surrounds. Every detail has been thought out and executed in absolute style. There’s a resident astronomer on site, a walk-in wine cellar, your very own personal bar and premium coffee station and a stargazing skylight above your bed. There’s no more luxurious way to enjoy the desert or the dark night skies.

  • Situated on a private reserve in one of the most beautiful areas of the Namib Desert
  • Explore the International Dark Sky Reserve from the observatory with an astronomer
  • Spacious and luxurious rooms with top class amenities
  • Day activities to Sossusvlei, Dead Vlei and Sesriem Canyon

“This is a lodge that dreams are made of. There is nothing missing. It is by far one of the most amazing safari lodges in Namibia.” – Ashlee, Travel Expert

3. Omaanda Lodge

safari lodges in namibia

On a private reserve just outside of Windhoek’s city limits, this may not be the first place you think to include in your itinerary, but as a first stop on arrival in Namibia or the last place you visit before flying out, you certainly can’t do better than this. It’s a destination in its own right and flying the Zannier flag extremely high, it’s worth including for sure. This lodge is immaculate as is the food and the service. We’d go as far as to say it could boast some of the best in Namibia and that’s quite the claim. Game drives on the 9,000 hectare Zannier Reserve of Naankuse gives an opportunity to enjoy wildlife right from the start or right till the very end. Relax at the pool, enjoy a sundowner with a view and of course there is time enough for a spa treatment.

  • The most luxurious accommodation option near Windhoek and easily one of the best safari lodges in Namibia
  • Only 20 minutes from the Windhoek International Airport
  • Spacious hut style rooms with top-notch amenities and top class finishes
  • Heated infinity swimming pool with a view

“It was truly an amazing experience. Definitely where luxury meets the wild. Undoubtedly one of the most incredible lodges and offerings in Namibia. A true safari experience, you would never say you were just outside the capital.” – Bonique, Travel Expert

4. Onguma The Fort

safari lodges in namibia

On the edge of eastern Etosha National Park , you’ll find the luxury safari lodge of Onguma The Fort. On the private Onguma Reserve, Onguma The Fort is the most luxurious safari lodge in their portfolio and when we say luxurious, it’s not only top-drawer in standard but it’s also one of the most striking safari lodges in Namibia. The attention to detail transcends that which can be seen, it is spectacular, it goes beyond exceptional. It is in every fine detail that makes this safari lodge one of the best in Etosha National Park, where the game viewing experience and the accommodation are first-rate.

  • A picturesque waterhole in front of the lodge with views over Fischer’s Pan in Etosha

On the southern side of Etosha National Park , close to the Andersson’s entrance gate, you’ll find the superlative, top luxury, all suite lodge of Little Ongava. Situated on the private Ongava Reserve, this has to be the most lavish safari lodge on this side of Etosha and it consists of only three private suites. Indulge in your own sala and private flow-rim plunge pool overlooking an active waterhole below. Here you are on top of a hill with an extensive view. Expect top class amenities as well as world class game viewing.

  • Game drives into Etosha National Park and on the private Ongava Reserve
  • Rhino tracking activities and big game sightings

“Little Ongava is top luxury and the fact that it’s small and intimate makes it even more exclusive. The Ongava Reserve is easily one of the best in Namibia and you’re right on the doorstep of Etosha. – Ashlee, Travel Expert

6. Wolwedans Mountain View Suite

safari lodges in namibia

This suite is easily one of the most romantic in Namibia. As part of the Wolwedans Dunes Lodge, the Mountain View Suite is set aside with it’s very own sweeping views. Perched atop a red sand dune overlooking the distant mountains and landscape of 'fairy circles' in the NamibRand Nature Reserve , it could also easily take first prize for most impressive setting in Namibia. It’s surreal. You’ll have private meals prepared by your own chef and all your activities are private too. If you’re looking for that ideal and all exclusive getaway to one of Namibia’s most beautiful locations with the darkest night skies, then this is it.

  • Situated on the private NamibRand Reserve it offers ultimate luxury in a remote and picturesque setting
  • Own private chef and private guide with private use vehicle

One of the most remote safari lodges in Namibia, it sits on the banks of the Kunene River in northern Kaokoland , in the furthest reaches of the desolate and rugged Hartmann’s Valley. The entire area is untouched wilderness and pure nature. It offers utmost relaxation in an idyllic desert setting with river views. 8. Hoanib Valley Camp

safari lodges in namibia

Another of Namibia’s best safari lodges in the otherworldly location of the Kaokoland . It’s incredibly remote, incredibly intimate and incredibly magical. The setting is something else. Hidden in a valley, it’s a tented safari lodge that is both elegant and modern in design and feel yet takes nothing from its surrounds. It’s intimate and secluded with all the creature comforts and luxuries you’d want but would not expect to find in a location as extensive and desolate as this. It’s charming and down to earth yet it easily rivals some of Namibia’s greats and is a fine contender on our list of best safari lodges in Namibia.

Explore regions & camps in Namibia

Situated along the Atlantic coastline, Namibia is the fifth largest country in Africa. It shares land borders with Angola and Zambia to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south. Our luxurious, remote and intimate camps are found across Damaraland, Sossusvlei, the Hoanib and Skeleton Coast, and the banks of the Kunene River in the Hartmann’s Valley.

What currency is used in Namibia?

The currency in Namibia is the Namibian Dollar (NAD) which is fixed to, and therefore equivalent to, the South African Rand (ZAR).

What time zone is Namibia in?

Namibia shares the same time as all of Southern Africa, which is two hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) + 2 hours, in the Central Africa Time Zone (CAT).

Can I use my credit cards in Namibia?

MasterCard and Visa (both with raised credit card numbers so that an imprint may be taken) are generally accepted throughout Namibia, including Wilderness. Holders of other cards are advised to clarify with a commercial bank whether their card is acceptable in Namibia. American Express and Diners Club specifically are no longer accepted in Namibia and, therefore, not at our camps either.

What is the power socket do they use in Namibia?

While some camps/lodges are linked to the national power grid, most of our camps/lodges are situated in pristine and remote wilderness areas where we need to generate our own electricity. We do this by making use of solar panels and/or generators, which charge a bank of batteries and provide electricity to the camp/lodge through an inverter system. We use 220V-powered plug points (3-prong round/2-prong round) for lighting, fans, the charging of batteries and sleep apnoea machines.

What do I pack for a safari Namibian?

We advise guests to wear comfortable and casual clothing while on safari. Neutral colours are best for game viewing. You may also want to pack swimming gear and clothing suitable for adventuring. Game drives usually take place in the early morning and late afternoon, which can be cold, especially in winter. Temperatures usually warm up during the day, so it is best to dress in layers.

Where is Namibia located?

Namibia is located in the south-western reaches of Africa, with South Africa to the south and east, Botswana to the east, Angola and Zambia to the north, and the Atlantic Ocean to the west.

What is Namibia known for?

Namibia is world famous for the highest dunes in the world at Sossusvlei, and for the immense Etosha National Park, one of the world’s greatest conservation areas. Namibia offers some of the world’s best wildlife viewing, from desert-adapted elephants, lions and giraffes, to other fascinating wildlife, plants and natural wonders.

When is a good time to visit Namibia?

Namibia is a great year-round destination. Some of the best months to visit are between June and October. This is the dry season when the temperature is not too hot or too cold.

What is the capital of Namibia?

Do i need a visa to travel to namibia.

Namibia currently offers visa-free travel to all countries for stays up to 90 days. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the date you expect to leave Namibia.

Vaccinations

What is the covid protocol for travelling to namibia.

We address all concerns surrounding COVID in line with the latest recommendations from the World Health Organization and other leading authorities. Please speak to your Travel Designer for the latest travel advisory updates, to ensure that you are prepared for all COVID travel requirements in Namibia before your departure.

Do I need a yellow fever vaccination to visit Namibia?

If you are travelling to Namibia from areas infected with yellow fever, you must have a valid yellow fever vaccination certificate. We advise our guests to also have an updated TPD (tetanus, polio, diphtheria) vaccine and a hepatitis A vaccine.

Do I need to take malaria tablets when visiting Namibia?

Yes. Malaria is a risk in some parts of Namibia. Please chat to your Travel Designer or travel clinic before your departure, to make sure you have enough time to take any prescription medicine needed to prevent malaria.

Today: Top 10 best luxury lodges & hotels in Namibia

The Namib, a sea of red sand along the Atlantic coastline, and the oldest desert on the planet, lends its name to the Southern African nation of Namibia. A country of astonishing contrasts, Namibia is celebrated for its immense landscapes, desert adapted wildlife, infinite blue skies and starry nights. Over the years, a number of cultural influences have contributed to the unique atmosphere of Namibia. At various times Germany, Great Britain and South Africa governed the territory, but it was with the eventual independence of Namibia in 1990 that the country was able to develop its multicultural character and reinvent itself. There is a distinctive Namibian character that freely blends African styles with European influences on architecture, food, customs and art.

Namibia is also one of Africa’s most spectacular travel destinations. The country’s many national parks and game reserves boast a huge variety of wildlife in a kaleidoscope of differing environments: dazzling white saltpans in Etosha National Park; towering red dunes at Sossusvlei; isolated Skeleton Coast beaches and the uninhabited wilderness of the Kunene Region. Astonishing contrasts are everywhere for the visitor to savor, enjoy and photograph. Over the past decade, a number of ultraluxe lodges have opened in the country, attracting discerning travelers from all over the world. Here’s my selection of the 10 most fabulous luxury lodges & hotels in Namibia, some of them ranking among the most spectacular wilderness hotels I’ve ever stayed at.

10. LITTLE ONGAVA, ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

Designed for privacy, luxury and an intimacy with the land, Little Ongava is perched on the crest of a hill commanding magnificent vistas of the plains stretching for miles towards Etosha National Park. This intimate camp has only three spacious suites each with its own plunge pool, en-suite bathroom, “sala”, and outdoor shower. The lounge and dining areas have wonderful views of a productive waterhole below the camp, the open deck allowing for relaxed, stylish dining under the African sky. Guests at Little Ongava share a dedicated guide and vehicle, ensuring the best possible nature experience at one of Africa’s great wildlife destinations. Day and night wildlife-viewing drives, visiting hides overlooking waterholes, walks and rhino approach with experienced guides can all be enjoyed exclusively on this reserve. Game drives and day trips into nearby Etosha National Park are also offered.

9. WOLWEDANS DUNE LODGE

Perched on top of a dune plateau, overlooking the ever-changing vistas of the vast desert, is the secluded Wolwedans Dunes Lodge. The building style is a combination of wooden structures and canvas blinds, opening up to the desert beyond. The lodge reflects the ambience of a tented camp, but provides the comfort and protection of a permanent building. Each of the nine spacious chalets with en-suite bathrooms has a private verandah, which connects guests to vast stretches of untouched sand. Guests can tuck into mouth-watering meals accompanied by fine wines in the elegant dining room. Those in need of relaxing spots can unwind in one of the inviting sitting rooms, enjoy a cool soak in the swimming pool or lounge around the wide sundowner decks. Adventures include nature walks through the NamibRand Nature Reserve and scenic flights to the Diamond Coast.

8. ONGUMA THE FORT, ETOSHA NATIONAL PARK

With a Moroccan architecture and Indian design touches, Onguma The Fort breaks the traditional safari camp mould, although it still retains a classic African feel. The safari lodge is situated on a private game reserve on the eastern side of Etosha National Park, near the entrance from the Von Lindquist gate, making it an ideal base to visit Etosha. The stunning fort-styled lodge features massive walls, stone clad features, and water channels in the main guest area, providing natural air conditioning. A huge central tower boasts stunning views toward Etosha and Fishers Pan and guests at the Fort can experience some of the best sunset views in Namibia. Accommodation at Onguma The Fort consists of 11 bush suites, 1 sultan suite, and 1 honeymoon suite, built in the style of mini forts and offering magical views across the plains from private wooden decks.

7. SHIPWRECK LODGE, SKELETON COAST

Located in the famous Skeleton Coast concession between the Hoarusib and Hoanib rivers in the Skeleton Coast National Park, Shipwreck Lodge is a short drive from Möwe Bay. Guests here can look forward to appreciate the harshness of the desert and the beauty of these solitary landscapes filled with geological history, and to learn about the fauna and flora adapted to survive in these harsh conditions. The design of the lodge was inspired by the many ships that have been wrecked on the Skeleton Coast. There are 10 chalets, spread out along the sand dunes: eight cabins come with double or twin beds while two cabins are designed as family units. All cabins are equipped with a wood-burning stove and have decks to enjoy the serene scenery. It’s the perfect place to take up to spectacular desert views with the sound of waves crashing in the distance and to fall asleep to a crackling fire in the stove.

6. ZANNIER HOTELS OMAANDA, WINDHOEK AREA

Zannier Hotels Omaanda is a boutique lodge set in the heart of the Zannier Reserve, a 22,000-acre wildlife conservancy located half an hour from Windhoek. A seamless sense of place resonates at the property through traditional Owambo architecture and elevated views stretching across soul-stirring savannas to the distant Khomas Hochland plateau. Accommodation consists of 10 individual thatch and clay huts, each with their own sunken bathtub and panoramic terrace. Relaxation at the lodge is balanced by adventures throughOmaanda’s partnership with N/a’an ku sê , a foundation dedicated to the conservancy of Namibia’s wildlife, land and cultures. Breakfast with meerkats at sunrise; track a rhino or a herd of elephants going for a swim; spy a leopard climbing a Jackleberry tree or simply experience the nocturnal beauty of the savanna – all with your own private guide.

5. DAMARALAND CAMP BY WILDERNESS SAFARIS

Damaraland Camp is situated in the Huab River Valley, one of Namibia’s most dramatic wilderness areas: a harsh land full of geological wonders and fascinating desert-adapted wildlife. Simply beautiful, relaxed, and open to the desert, the camp has been a model for community-based conservation initiatives since 1996 – an award-winning partnership between Wilderness Safaris and the Torra Conservancy. Displaced in the early twentieth century from the local area, and relocated back to their homeland from South Africa in 1973, today the Torra community farmers thrive, largely through the partnership. The camp is comprised of ten elevated adobe-style thatched rooms, each with a large deck where you can contemplate the desert. Off the main area are a pool, open campfire, and outdoor boma – canopied with countless stars in crystal-clear night skies.

4. LITTLE KULALA CAMP BY WILDERNESS SAFARIS

Little Kulala’s home is the 27 000-hectare Kulala Wilderness Reserve, a pristine wilderness sited in Namibia’s Namib, nicknamed ‘The Living Desert’. A welcome oasis, the camp lies along the dry Auab riverbed. You can’t get much closer to the renowned dunes of Sossusvlei and the haunting panoramas of Dead Vlei, accessible through an exclusive-use gate. Recently refurbished, Little Kulala entices with its adventures, its landscapes, its peace. Totally solar-powered, the new camp has cleaner, more modern lines than its predecessor, opening out more to the desert. Its 11 climate-controlled suites – each with its own plunge pool – honor the local geology, reflecting the surrounding grey and pink limestone in color and texture. Each suite’s rooftop invites private sundowners and suppers, and a roll-out bed on a shaded sala is perfect for an afternoon siesta or starry sleep-out.

3. ZANNIER HOTELS SONOP

The opulence and finesse of Zannier Hotels Sonop, set in Namibia’s southwest corner, immediately recalls the 1920’s era of British explorers. Constructed on top of granite boulders, the tented camp enjoys a remote and unspoilt setting in 13,800 acres (5,600 hectares) of untouched wilderness. Every object and antique in the lodge’s ten spacious tents are carefully selected – binoculars and maps, travelers’ tales, telescopes, antique desks and handmade stationary – to ensure that every moment turns into a unique experience. The lodge captures the restorative essence of the desert landscape with a spectacular open-air infinity pool, spa, fitness center and daily yoga. Guided excursions include horse-riding from our own stables, private dining atop of the sand dunes, electric fat-bike or walking trails, and private sunset safaris. The magic continues after dark with a nightly gala-style dinner, open-air cinema and stargazing under the endless African skies.

2. HOANIB SKELETON COAST CAMP BY WILDERNESS SAFARIS

Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp is located in Namibia’s ancient Namib Desert’s famed Kaokoveld, an otherworldly and remote landscape hewn over the ages into immense dunes and rocky mountains. The lodge’s eight luxury tented suites peak like whitecaps on an ocean of sand. Totally solar-powered, Hoanib has a fresh, contemporary design, with a color palette reflecting the surrounding desert. The camp (suites, common areas, pool) looks out on a wide, rugged valley that slopes down to the usually dry Hoanib River. Highlights include a spectacular dry-and-fly excursion to the Skeleton Coast and dining under impossibly starry skies, perhaps at the firepit as a jackal cries or a lion roars, punctuating the stillness of the inky night. The property also doubles as a center for research and conservation of the desert-adapted predators of this harsh region: the desert-adapted lion and brown hyaena.

1. &BEYOND SOSSUSVLEI DESERT LODGE

Set amidst an ocean of towering dunes, rocky outcrops and endless gravel plains, &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge is one of Africa’s most exclusive hotels. 10 beautifully appointed stone and glass suites, spread out along the curve of the escarpment, open onto ever-changing outlooks. Each spacious air conditioned suite offers a secluded, shaded veranda complete with private plunge pool, a living room with a fireplace, a large retractable skylight above the bed, and an ensuite bathroom with a glass-encased rain shower offering 180º desert views. The main split-level guest area – which houses a lounge, bar, dining room, gym and spa – is an inspired masterpiece of glass, rock and steel, with large glass panels folding away to reveal unobstructed desert vistas.
