Fantail Farm Wagon & Sleigh Rides - 4700 Wallaker Rd, Benzonia, MI, Sold as group rides, not by the seat.  Your group will be in a sleigh/wagon to yourself. These Michigan sleigh rides are 45-55 minutes in length, through the woods and fields of their 120 acre farm. You might see lots of winter critters along your journey so keep a look out!  Such fun things to do in the snow for the whole family!

Sleighman - Horseback & Sleigh Rides -  2115 Olmsted Ln, Ishpeming, MI,  Hop aboard a one  hour private horse drawn sleigh ride with two Norwegian Fjord Horses for up to six people for a set rate.   What a fun thing to do in Michigan's Upper Peninsula in Winter! Perfect romantic sleigh rides in Michigan...hint, hint, great Valentine's Day gift!

Antler Ridge Farms-   6259 M-72, Williamsburg, MI, It's so fun to go on a  sleigh ride  in fresh falling snow!  Come out and enjoy an old fashioned sleigh ride through the woods for a great bonfire, hot chocolate and gooey marshmallows to roast. You will be pulled by two grand Percheron Draft Horses. Super fun activities to do in winter!

Fantasy Carriage Company  and Frankenmuth Carriage Company  - Frankenmuth, MI, Not a sleigh ride, but these lovely horse drawn carriages are a fun experience in the falling snow in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Frankenmuth is one of our favorite places to visit for things to do in Michigan in winter.

Black Horse Farm - 11177 S Plowman Rd, Empire, Michigan. Enjoy a s leigh ride through the wooded hilly terrain of the Black Horse Farm. Each Michigan sleigh ride is about an hour with a stop mid-way at a warming house for hot chocolate. The sleighs can carry up to 12 people so bring all of your loved ones. There are several scenic lookouts over Glen Lake and Lake Michigan. A wesome place for a Michigan horse drawn  sleigh ride !  

Wild West Ranch -  1861 52nd St, Fennville, MI, Come out for a  sleigh ride  for a mini winter getaway in Michigan!  Bundle up and have some fun on horse drawn sleigh rides through the woods! Rides are 40 minutes long and are quite scenic.

Common Gentry Carriage Co - 3665 15 Mile Rd NW, Kent City, Michigan. Create unforgettable memories on Common Gentry Carriage Co's  classic winter sleigh rides! It's a treasure to hear the sound of German sleigh bells ringing across the countryside, while you sit cuddled up with your loved one on their 1800's horse drawn sleigh. 

Pond House Ponies - 2115 Olmsted Ln, Ishpeming, MI 49849 Horseback, Carriage, Sleigh Rides. Fun things to do in Michigan in winter!

Cook Family Farm - 4282 Hayes Tower Rd, Gaylord, MI 49735 Enjoy a gorgeous horse drawn sleigh ride through God’s country! Sleigh rides are approximately 40 minute with hot chocolate and cookies afterward.  Add these sleigh rides to your list of romantic things to do in Michigan in the winter!

Ranch Rudolf Inc - 6841 Brown Bridge Road, Traverse City, MI, Ranch Rudolf offers horse-drawn sleigh rides from December to late February! Their beautiful Belgian horses, Prince and Monte, will take you for a scenic ride through the Boardman River Valley. The ride itself takes approximately 45 minutes. Sleigh rides are popular activities to do in winter!

Fruit Ridge Hayrides - 11966 Fruit Ridge NW, Kent City, MI, Can you hear those sleigh bells jingling? Enjoy the winter wonderland on a snowy sleigh ride and later, get warmed up around a toasty campfire. Rides are approximately one hour in duration and may be combined with a one hour campfire, either before or after the ride. One of our favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!

Thunder Bay Resort -  27800 M 32 Hillman, Michigan. See elk from a horse drawn carriage or sleigh lead by massive draft horses!  You will be literally be whisked "over the river and through the woods" to the resorts elk preserve to see majestic Rocky Mountain elk.  Perfect winter activities for adults and kids!

Ride the Michigan Polar Express Train!!

Every winter, Chris and I LOVE riding the Michigan Polar Express Train .  The Pere Marquette stream train is absolutely incredible and is not to be missed. 

We also love riding the Huckleberry Railroad at Crossroads Village in Flint. You will feel like you stepped into a Norman Rockwell painting when you visit Crossroads Village!

Plus, as a fun FREE family friendly activity we also always ride the cute little Northern Express train in Midland Michigan.

Michigan Winter Rafting is Incredible! Adventurous Things to do in Michigan in Winter!

Jordan Valley Outfitters (Located in Charlevoix) is a great company that offers winter rafting! I had an absolute blast rafting down the river with them last winter. Each raft has a guide that steers the boat from the back of the raft so you don't have to worry about navigating.  

You will stop half way for delicious hot chocolate, hot apple cider and a small snack for a chance to rest and stretch your legs.

Perfect for families and couples. Plus, you can join another group if you are traveling solo...that's what I did.  Definitely one of my favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!  

I'd suggest waiting until snow is in the forecast as this rafting trip is so scenic when the banks are snow covered!  Perfect outdoor winter activities for adults and kids!

Visit Mackinac City This Winter!

Have you ever thought of visiting Mackinac City in the winter ?  If you aren't a fan of crowds, visiting this iconic city in the winter may be perfect for you.  

The scenery is gorgeous and the hotels are cheaper.  This is one of our favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!

Explore Grand Rapids in Winter

1.  Visit Blandford Nature Center - 1715 Hillburn Ave. NW, Grand Rapids, Michigan. Spend time in nature by hiking the trails or renting snow shoes. This is one of our favorite places to visit for things to do in Michigan in winter. 

2.  World of Winter Festival  in downtown Grand Rapids - January 6 - March 5, 2023. See art installations and performances, play games, take walking tours and more, all FREE! Check their World of Winter website for performance programs and info.

3.Go ice skating at the Rosa Parks Circle Ice Skating Rink ! Location: Rosa Parks Circle, 135 Monroe Center St NW, Grand Rapids. $2 ice skate rentals! Super cheap and fun family activity in winter!  All skate times must be reserved in advance, so check their website for details. Ice skating is one of Chris' favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!

Best Things to Do in Frankenmuth in Winter

We look forward  Zehnder's Snowfest  every year!  I think it's probably the highlight of our month as we love to dine on Frankenmuth's famous famous chicken dinners, explore the town and check out the insane snow sculptures!

This is one of our favorite things to do in Michigan in winter with kids! It's also perfect for a romantic winter getaway for couples!

Discover The Eben Ice Caves! See Our Map of the Caves, Where to Stay and Directions

Trailhead Location : Frey Rd, Deerton, MI 49822

Directions to Eben Ice Caves. From Eben Junction, take 365 north to 388 east which turns into Frey Road and dead ends.

It's Best to Wear Ice Cleats - Crampons 

Why ice cleats?  Well...here's the deal.   If you are walking through several inches of snow along an icy shoreline or in icy caves, snow covers the ice.  You won't even know it's there until you "find it."  After slipping several times during a long winter hike in 1 foot of snow along a Lake Huron path in Tawas, I invested in a good pair.  The cheap ones fall off.  I know this because I lost one after it kept falling off. You can't find it in deep fresh falling snow.

What's Cool?   These ice cleats were mentioned in the Backpacker magazine Gear Hall of Fame in 2017!

Extremus 23-Spike Ice Cleats, Crampons for Men or Women - Budget Pricing

What I like about these ice cleats is the strap across the top to keep them firmly in place. A cheaper pair that I have falls off so these will stay on while ice fishing, hiking, walking and exploring.

Each foot also has 23 individual stainless-steel cleats that are positioned perfectly on the heal and fore foot. These cleats will give you incredible confidence while walking or hiking so you can avoid serious injuries from falling.

Where to Stay in Eben Junction

We highly recommend staying in Munising which is 20 miles (24 minutes) from the Eben Ice Caves. 

AmericInn by Wyndham Wetmore Munising

We have stayed at the  AmericInn  a couple times as it is in a good location for the falls, restaurants and beaches.  I liked that the bedrooms were separate with a closing door that blocked hall noises while sleeping. We utilized the nice pool and hot tub too.

Holiday Inn Express Munising - Lakeview

This pretty Munising Hotel has a fantastic breakfast, wonderful views of the Grand Island Harbor Bay and very nicely furnished rooms. You will definitely enjoy your stay in this  Holiday Inn Express in Munising .

Superior Stay Hotel, Marquette, Michigan

We were thrilled at the prices of the Superior Stay Hotel in Marquette . It's a super clean, super updated modern hotel, too. It's a bit more of a drive to the Eben Ice Caves, but there are great restaurants and things to do in Marquette. Why not stay an extra day to explore this area?

Michigan Tubing & Tobogganing

Love tubing and tobogganing? Check out Echo Valley, located at 8495 E H Ave, Kalamazoo, Michigan. When we lived in Kalamazoo it was one of our favorite things to do in Michigan in winter.

Tubing and tobogganing is available on the weekends, no reservations needed. Echo Valley is perfect for families and groups. Food and beverages are available in their warming lodge and you can get warm around their circular fireplace while watching the tubers and tobogganers zip down the hills! Day rates, cash only.

Indoors Fun: Things to do in Michigan in Winter in Auburn Hills, Michigan

This Michigan day itinerary is absolutely one of our favorite things to do in Michigan in Winter. We head to Auburn Hills which is not far from Detroit  and park at the  Great Lakes Crossing Mall.

And the best part?  You only have to park once for all the fun below! Oh, and it's all indoors !  It's one  of our favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!

Skip the Line: SEA LIFE Michigan Aquarium Admission Tickets

SEA LIFE Michigan Aquarium at Great Lakes Crossing Outlets  is such a great place to spend a couple hours.  See more than 5,000 sea creatures including seahorses, jellyfish, and the giant Pacific octopus!

We love watching the blacktip reef sharks and cownose swim above us in the underwater tunnel.  This is one of our favorite places to visit for things to do in Michigan in winter.

Once you are parked (free parking), enjoy  Sea Life Aquarium  and then walk about 20 feet to the  Rainforest Café!  Enjoy roaring tigers, frequent overhead thunderstorms and other fun interactive characters in the Café for lunch.  They have great drinks too!

After lunch, wander the expansive  Great Lakes Crossing Mall  to get your steps in while shopping! It's a pretty mall, updated, clean and cheerful. There's a food court too if you need some snacks.  It's one of our favorite things to do on a cold day!

For evening fun, catch a movie at the AMC Star Great Lakes 25 Theate r located inside the mall, close to Legoland!  What an awesome way to spend the day during a cold winter in Michigan! It's one of my favorite things to do in Michigan in winter!

We recommend spending the night because it might be hard to pack this much fun into one day, especially with small children!  There are so many fun things to do in Michigan in winter, take the time to enjoy it!

See Incredible Views of Lake Huron and Photograph a Lighthouse!

I have hiked the trail from the Tawas lighthouse at the Tawas State Park out to the end viewpoint several times in both summer and winter. Snow can be above your knees in winter, so wear ski pants, high boots and crampons .  The views are incredible!  This is one of my favorite places to visit for things to do in Michigan in winter after a fresh snow.

Detroit Art Institute  - The Detroit Art Institute is an incredible place to visit in the winter, we absolutely love it there. The building itself is breathtaking. Stop for coffee in the café that reminds me of Harry Potter! Plan to spend about 3.5 hours exploring and learning! Add the Detroit Art Institute to your fun things to do in Michigan in winter list!

Flint Institute of Arts - You really must visit the Flint Art Center this winter! Their glassblowing demonstrations are absolutely incredible.  My favorite section of the Flint Institute of Art is the glass art, as it defies gravity! Ann Arbor Art Center  - For an artistic winter getaway, tour the Ann Arbor Art Center for local and national art. We spent about 2 hours exploring the multilevel facility. There are so many fun things to do in Michigan in winter!

Best Places to Visit in Michigan During Winter

Winter in Michigan is a great time to explore the state’s cities and nature. In Detroit, visit the iconic Fox Theater or the Detroit Historical Museum.

For outdoor activities, try snowshoeing or cross-country skiing at one of Michigan’s many state parks – perfect for a winter day!

Head up north to Traverse City for some of the best sledding hills in the country, plus plenty of restaurants and shopping. Or check out the city’s wineries and breweries to sample some unique flavors.

Located in West Michigan, my hometown of Muskegon is one of the unique places to visit in Michigan in winter. My favorite is the Muskegon Luge Adventure Sports Park . The Muskegon Winter Sports Complex is home to an Olympic size luge track. And for good reason, because Muskegon is home to a Silver Medalist Olympic Luge athlete, Mark Grimmette. He’s a fellow alumnus of my high school, so you can understand a bit of the pride. Did you know that this is one of only four luge tracks in the US?

If you’re not comfortable racing down the luge, there is a beginner track you can try. But that’s not all at the Muskegon Winter Sports Park Complex. You can also find:

• Ice Skating – both on an ice skating rink and a 1/4 mile trail through the woods. Seriously so cool!
• Snowshoeing on marked trails

Cross Country Skiing

Plus, the winter complex has adaptive sports, for those with limited mobility. Adaptive cross-country skiing, luge, and ice sleds are available.

Grand haven

Moving south a little bit before we cruise north, Grand Haven is a picturesque town and boasts some of the most beautiful beaches on Lake Michigan . It’s also one of my favorite places in winter.

Having lived there for a few years, winter in Grand Haven is quiet . It’s the best time to stroll the lake.

I often get asked, can you walk on Lake Michigan in the Winter? I wouldn’t. It’s been a long time since there has been a hard enough freeze on the Big Lake. Some of the smaller inland lakes would be fine. Always check with the locals before you walk on any frozen water.

Downtown Grand Haven also offers a variety of seasonal events throughout winter like Winterfest with a bonfire bash, snow volleyball, and live music. There’s nothing better than gathering around a bonfire in the middle of a snowy day.

Grand Rapids

Grand Rapids is a great place for families and friends to visit during winter. One of the best things about Grand Rapids is that it’s been ranked as one of the safest cities in America. The city has a number of fun winter activities in Michigan and attractions, both indoors and out for your winter recreation. Grand Rapids is a great place to fly in as it’s only a few hours from many natural attractions.

One location for Michigan winter attractions that shines in Grand Rapids is Frederik Meijer Gardens sculpture park . This year-round garden truly takes on another look with snow-covered sculptures . In addition to walking the grounds, you can warm up in the indoor gardens and butterfly conservatory here.

The World of Winter Festival takes Grand Rapids’ love of art to a whole new level. Over 40 outdoor art installations are just part of the 2-month long festival. Ice sculptures, outdoor contests, and of course, beer make up the festival to draw people outside.This is easily one of the best Grand Rapids Winter Activities.

The reason beer is part of the festival? It’s because Grand Rapids is Beer City USA . Their Ale Trail includes over 40 craft breweries, all within 30 miles of each other. If you wanted to expand that to Holland, Grand Haven, and Muskegon, you’d have dozens more within an hour of each other. I’d say that’s enough to keep you going through the winter, but please drink responsibly. Always have a designated driver, especially in the winter.

Traverse City

Traverse City has a population of only 16,000 people. This charming northern Michigan town boasts skiing, golfing, skating and snowmobiling, as well as plenty of terrific restaurants and stores to explore. You’ll be certain to have a wonderful time here.

Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is near Traverse City and a great place for snowshoeing the dunes. If you just want to see the wild lake toss and turn with snowy and icy whitecaps, a visit here will still impress.

For a more active winter getaway, check out the nearby National Forest which features several miles of groomed cross-country ski trails. If you’re not quite ready to leave your snowy haven yet then book yourself into one of their cozy B&Bs where they serve hearty breakfasts every morning before sending you off on an adventure through all that this great state has to offer.

Come hungry to Traverse City. Restaurant Week happens in early February when the areas restaurants draw you in with their best specialty items.

I feel like Detroit really shines in the winter. It is nicknamed Hockeytown , after all, as the popular home of the Detroit Red Wings NHL. Whether or not you’re a hockey fan, there’s nothing like seeing a game in person. And Red Wings fans are as fanatic as they get, in a good way of course. They have the most Stanley Cup championships, and this town is truly proud of their team.

Of all the Michigan places to visit, Detroit is going to have the most indoor and outdoor winter things to do.

On the flip side of exciting hockey fans, Detroit is home to a number of phenomenal museums, to keep you warm inside during the winter months. Detroit Institute of Arts The institute hosts many different types of exhibitions and has one of the most comprehensive collections of Western art in the US.

The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation at Greenfield Village is open year-round. You’ll discover America’s culture, inventions, people, and can-do spirit at The Henry Ford, where you can explore, enjoy, and be inspired by hundreds of hands-on activities. The Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation, Greenfield Village, Ford Rouge Factory Tour, and Giant Screen Experience are some of the many attractions around the region. This is one of the fun things to do in Michigan in the winter indoors.

Another great place you can visit during the winter months is Kensington Park . It’s a short drive from downtown Detroit and has beautiful views of Kent Lake and access to miles of hiking trails. There are many family-friendly activities such as walking paths, sledding hills, cross-country skiing, tobogganing, and skating too.

Other things to do in Detroit include outdoor ice skating at Campus Martius Park. Take a tour of Eastern Market with local vendors selling produce and other foods on Saturdays. On Belle Isle, you can go skiing or snowboarding on the island’s ski hill.

Detroit, like any of our older cities, also has unique architecture. This Architecture Walking Tour takes you to some of the city’s must see buildings, even in the heart of winter. Book now and pay later .

And we haven’t even talked about the food yet. If you haven’t tried Detroit-style pizza yet, spend a day warming up and trying various pizza places to see who has the best Detroit pizza.

Want to try the best food rivalry in Detroit? Check out Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island greek style hot dogs. These two businesses are literally right next door to each other . The story goes that Gust Keros opened American Coney Island in 1917. A few years later, his brother William opened his own store, Lafayette Coney Island, in the adjacent storefront.

Boyne Mountain Resort

Boyne Mountain is a ski resort and year-round resort located in Boyne Falls, Michigan, approximately 60 miles northeast of Traverse City. With over 100 ski runs spread out across 550 acres and a variety of terrain, it offers something for everyone.

It features a variety of skiing and snowboarding terrain, including some designated beginner areas. The ski area has been open since 1948, making it one of the oldest ski resorts in North America. The Boyne Mountain Resort has plenty of winter activities including Sno-go biking, fat tire biking in the snow, cross-country ski rentals, ice skating, tubing, zipline, and of course downhill skiing .

Boyne Mountain Resort offers a number of ways to be entertained indoors. There’s the Game Room, where you can play classic arcade games like air hockey and pinball.

There’s also the Craft Room, which offers classes on various activities such as painting, quilting, and woodworking.

You can participate in trivia nights at the resort or spend an evening singing karaoke with friends. The resort also provides movie nights for all ages that are sure to provide hours of entertainment.

Mackinac Island

One of my favorite places to visit during winter is Mackinac Island. It’s a small island located in Lake Huron and has everything you need for a great winter getaway. There are many historic buildings, bike paths, and the best fudge in the world! The views of the frozen lake are incredible and they say it’s one of the most beautiful places on earth during this time of year.

Here’s the thing about Mackinac Island in the winter. You can get there as long as there is a ferry to take you. The main ferry only runs if the lake isn’t frozen over. Some places will also be closed during the winter months, but if you can get on the island, you’ll have it practically to yourself. Imagine taking horse-drawn sleigh rides down the center of thefa empty Victorian-lined streets.

It’s a peaceful little place you can take in at your own pace, only having to worry about the cold weather. And even then, you will find yourself fully bundled up and prepared for whatever comes your way. If you’re looking for peace yet one of the cool places to visit in Michigan, the island is perfect.

In addition to the quiet ambiance, there are still plenty of activities available. Ice fishing is an enjoyable outdoor activity and snowshoeing can be great exercise. If all else fails, you can always just relax and enjoy the silence of winter on Mackinac Island.

Northern Michigan

Ready to head to Michigan’s Upper Peninsula? The Great Lakes State has a lot to explore in this wintery wonderland. Head over the Mackinac Bridge to even more remote winter beauty.

We’ll talk about a few fun places to go in Michigan in the UP and then move on to some of the cities and special events.

Firstly, let’s talk waterfalls in Notherment Michigan.

Many folks know that Tahquamenon Falls State Park as a popular place. It’s also one of the largest waterfalls east of the Mississippi, Niagra Falls being the biggest. Tahquamenon Falls has both upper and lower falls. Tahquamenon Falls is located in Paradise, quite literally. Paradise, Michigan is on the Whitefish Bay of Lake Superior and about an hour from Mackinac Bridge in St. Ignace.

There are over 300 waterfalls in the Upper Peninsula and many of them freeze during the winter months, making the ice sculptures a sight to be seen. Find a full list of falls and road trip ideas here .

Choose from plenty of snowmobiling adventures in Northern Michigan as well, with either easy or challenging terrain. For an easier ride, try renting a single-track machine that is designed for the beginner rider. For more experienced riders there are lots of opportunities to challenge yourself on both groomed and ungroomed trails.

Where to stay:

Marquette is one of the “bigger” cities in the UP and home to Northern Michigan University .

The UP 200 sled dog race is an annual event that takes place in Marquette, Michigan. Each year the race draws participants from all over the country.

Usually, they are testing their dogs for a longer competition or trying to qualify for the Iditarod. The race covers 200 miles of snow-packed trails, with a total elevation change of 10,000 feet and eight checkpoints along the way. If you love dogs (or just need some adrenaline), dog sledding is a great event to check out!

There are plenty of lodging options near the starting line, so even if you can’t make the race, there are plenty of activities for your winter trip.

From museums and ice fishing to shopping downtown or warming up with hot chocolate at a local cafe, Marquette has plenty of things to do in the winter months.

Nearby Marquette is Eben Ice Caves , a truly spectacular occurrence in Michigan in the winter. The Rock River Canyon Ice Caves, also known as Eben Ice Caves are in Eben Junction. This is by far one of the best cool places to go in Michigan. When the snow melts, as it can do even in winter, it forms a waterfall effect and a natural cave. You will have about a mile hike to the caves and experts recommend using ice cleats to walk on the hard-packed snow and ice.

Located on Lake Superior, Munising offers a rugged and remote experience.

Located at 66 miles west of Munising along highway US-41, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore offers scenic views of the Lake Superior shoreline with miles of trails leading to sandy beaches.

The Grand Marais is also a picturesque town located in the heart of the Great Lakes region that has many shops and restaurants to explore.

Head back east past Munising towards Houghton, home of the Uinniversity of Michigan Copper Country Research Center. A great stop for those interested in copper mining history, this is one site where you can see what life was like during this period through preserved buildings from around 1900.

You’ll find other points of interest such as Ojibwa (Chippewa) cultural sites, local museums and geological features. You won’t want to miss nearby Porcupine Mountain ski resort for their adventurous snow tubing slopes or try ice climbing on the cliffsides!

For things to do in Michigan in February, check out ice climbing. A truly unique event, whether you go to participate or observe, Munising is home to the Michigan ice fest . You can even take a course to increase your skills. In the evenings, attend one of the many parties. If you’re there to watch, catch the action at Sand Point Road for climbers and incredible scenery.

Noquemanon Trail Network

Between Marquette and Munising is the Noquemonon Trail Network . The winter hiking trails have a variety of terrain, from rolling hills to steep climbs. Hiking in the winter is one of my new favorite things. I’ve never been much of a winter person, until I got the right gear for hiking.

You can find great views of the nearby lakes and rivers, as well as secluded areas for relaxation. There are several trailheads to choose from, so you can customize your adventure to fit your needs. Whether you’re looking for a leisurely stroll or an all-day trek, this area has something for everyone.

Be sure to prepare for all weather conditions, as the trails can get slippery when wet or icy during the winter months. Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and snacks!

With its stunning landscapes and a variety of routes, the Noquemonon Trail Network is one of the best places to explore in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. There are plenty of fishing spots too if you’re looking to catch something for dinner.

Frankenmuth

Back to the lower peninsula and the town that looks like it came straight from Bavaria.

There’s always something going on at Frankenmuth. At Christmas time, they have all sorts of fun activities and are home to the largest Christmas store in the US . They also have a great German restaurant with live music and dancing! You’ll be sure to enjoy yourself in this quaint little town.

Frankenmuth is located on the Eastern side of Michigan, about 3 hours from the bridge in Mackinaw City.

In the winter, Frankenmuth is home to Snowfest. Zehnder’s Snowfest features large snow and ice sculptures throughout the town. A tradition for over 30 years, you can come early to watch the ice sculpture carve blocks of ice with chainsaws and chisels. The annual event occurs in late January.

To the west of Detroit lies a town that is not just about the Maize and Blue. If you knew I was talking about the University of Michigan , you’d know I was in Ann Arbor.

This is more than just a college town, however. Ann Arbor invites you to get “Wintersmitten” each winter. I love the nod to the fact that we’re in the Mitten State too with this moniker.

For winter activities in southeast Michigan, festivals such as this are the way to go.

Wintersmitten is a perfect romantic things to do in Michigan in the winter weekend destination, with unique retail, vintage, and specialty shops. Plus, it’s home to a massive international food scene, with over 400 restaurants packed in this small destination. You can always take in a basketball or hockey game at the UofM while here, as well as hike or bike one of the many trails still open in winter.

Just south of Ann Arbor is Tecumseh. They, too, have an Ice sculpture festival each year and the clear-cut glass-looking sculptures are truly something to behold.

The town is filled with small-town community feelings as there is plenty of family-filled events such as scavenger hunts, games, and even balloon sculptures. Local restaurants offer a unique variety of cuisine from all over the world as well as locally grown produce and freshly caught seafood.

For those looking for a more relaxed vacation, the town is ideal for exploring nature trails or taking leisurely strolls along the beachfront. There are also plenty of art galleries, museums, and other attractions to explore. For the night owls, there are a plethora of bars and clubs where they can enjoy music and dancing until dawn.

Even if you can’t visit some of these iconic places in Michigan, and you will be in the Mitten State, these are some fun things to do in Michigan in the winter. Any of these activities take place in small towns and cities throughout the upper and lower peninsulas.

Fat Tire Biking

Fat tire biking is an excellent way to explore Michigan in the winter! This type of cycling is designed specifically for use on snow and icy surfaces, making it a perfect outdoor activity for those visiting Michigan when temperatures dip.

You can rent a fat tire bike from most outdoor rental companies, or find guided tours that provide all the necessary equipment. The best part? You don’t have to be an experienced cyclist to enjoy this activity – most fat tire bikes are designed to be accessible to any skill level.

Ice Fishing

For sledding the dune, you can bring your own sled, and we also suggest bringing ski goggles and keeping your mouth shut to escape the flying snow/sand mix! Cost: To enter the park, you’ll need a National Park pass . Cost is $25 per vehicle or $45 for the year. If you have a 4th grader , you can get in for only $15.

Rise to New Heights with Ice Climbing

Superior Ice Climbing Adventures, West 2933 Co Rd 374, Carney, MI 49812 When I first heard about ice climbing, I was stoked at the thought of an amazing date adventure, but immediately dismissed it from being an activity for kids. Then I discovered it can be both! The mission of Superior Ice Climbing Adventures in the Upper Peninsula involves introducing families and children to the sport of climbing. You couldn’t ask for a more picturesque and exciting way to explore the coast of Michigan in the winter! Cost: Single 1 on 1: $200 PP: 2 to 3 climbers $150 PP; Groups of 4 + $120 PP. This track, which is part of the Winter Sports Complex , was designed by an Olympian and is a one-of-a-kind ride, made to introduce beginners (ages 8 and up) safely to the sport. There are plenty of places to visit to simply sit and take in the frozen falls. A few especially noteworthy are: Munising Falls at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore This is one of the easiest waterfalls to visit in winter, as it’s a short, paved trail that leads up to the falls. The parking lot is plowed, but the trail to the falls is not. Wagner Falls is another must-see in Munising. Along with the falls, you can expect a gorgeous (and not too long) snowy hike to the falls. Tahquamenon Falls is Michigan’s most famous waterfall, and its beauty is no exception in the winter. There are two falls, and the easiest walk is to the upper falls. There is a brewery on site too for anyone needing a lunch stop. Bond Falls is another well-known waterfall in the western part of the UP. The walk is much more challenging in the winter, so it may be best to visit this one without the littles, but if you can make it there, the trek in is well worth it.

Snow Tube Down the Hills

With beautiful trails, exciting snow tubing, a mechanical lift, warming shack, and hot chocolate and snacks, this is a great way for a family to spend a mid-Michigan winter day. Here are even more Lansing area favorite tubing and sledding options families love . Cost: $10 per person for two hours or $8 per person with groups of four or more (there is also a vehicle entrance fee of $3 for residents and $5 for non-residents) Other fantastic tubing spots in Michigan are Cannonsburg Ski Area in Cannonsburg, Treetops Resort in Gaylord , Echo Valley in Kalamazoo, and Timberlee Hills (the largest in Michigan) in Traverse City.

Ride through the Woods on a Dog Sled

Treetops Resort offers a thrilling dog sled adventure, where you and your family can experience man and dog working together in nature. Kids of any age are welcome! There are other great dog sledding experiences out there too! Check out these dog sledding places in Michigan. Cost: $55 per person and $25 for each added person in the sled.

Become a “Musher”

6925 S. 27 ½ Road, Cadillac, Michigan 49601 Due to the ½ address, GPS and map programs sometimes have difficulty, so see the website for specific written directions. If riding in a dog sled isn’t enough, you can actually learn how to drive it! Learn to Mush (the word for dog-sled driver) and become a certified Musher by the end of the day. Shemhader Kennels offers an experience that includes time in the kennel to learn the sleds and hooking up the dogs. After that, it’s time to drive with a trainer, so that by the end, you’ll get your own team to enjoy driving your own dog sled team for two rides on beautiful and adventurous trails! This is the only guide service in lower Michigan that allows the musher to drive the sled. The rides are about 3 miles long, and don’t worry – there’s always a guide behind you to coach you through the ride. This is an experience you’ll never forget! For a family of 4, you can mix and match and give half rides and then each person can take 1 dog sled team by themselves. To drive the sled, you have to be over the age of 14. You can bring younger kids along, but remember that this activity is out in the cold for up to 3 hours, so having really young children along might be difficult! For anyone wanting to see the dogs up and close but aren’t quite ready to drive, they also offer kennel tours. There are no rides with the tour, but it is a great time learning and playing with the dogs, and sometimes even puppies if you hit it at the right time! Cost: The Musher Experience- $350 per person ($350 each or $700) – only 2-4 people are allowed per day. For only 1 Person, the cost is $600, so it’s most cost-effective for a couple, two friends or two family members. Kennel Tours- $75/ hour for an entire group.

Harris Nature Center 3998 Van Atta Rd, Okemos, MI 48864 Snowshoeing is one of our favorite activities in winter because it’s so accessible, great for all ages, and if you have your own snowshoes, it’s free! Wherever you can hike in the summer, you can snowshoe in the winter. (If the trail is specifically groomed for cross-country skiing, be sure to stay on the side of the trail so you don’t mess with the ski tracks though!) Harris Nature Center , just east of Lansing, has trails for snowshoeing and also offers a snowshoeing class that gives beginner tips on staying warm in the cold, snowshoeing techniques, and guided walks along the trails. With over five miles of trails, an indoor nature center, and activities and events offered for families year-round (all for free!), this is a perfect winter stop. Other Lansing area favorites for snowshoeing are Fenner Nature Center , Fitzgerald Park in Grand Ledge, Birchfield Park in Holt, and Lake Lansing Park North in Haslett. All have snowshoes to rent. For some amazing scenic hiking further north, check out trails in Traverse City , guided day or evening hikes at Ludington State Park , hikes in the upper peninsula at Tahquamenon Falls State Park , or any of these trails all over the state . For snowshoeing with kids near Grand Rapids, be sure to check out these awesome areas . Cost: Snowshoeing and admission to the nature center are always free. For the snowshoeing class: $15 for one 2-hour session, or $20 if you need to rent shoes.

Cross-Country Ski Around the State

Fitzgerald Park 133 Fitzgerald Park Drive, Grand Ledge, MI 48837 Cross-country skiing is another fun and easy way to get outside and enjoy the beauty of the winter. For families with kids under the age of two, you can ski with a ski sled or baby backpack to bring even the littlest along. By the age of 3-5, kids are ready to try their own skis! Fitzgerald Park has xc-ski rentals by the hour, day, or weekend, so you can ski anywhere on Eaton County’s 15 miles of trails, and then afterward take the skis along with you if you decide to set out for a longer weekend trip. Fitzgerald Park has cross-country ski clinics and “By the Light of the Moon” ski and snowshoe nights from 6-9 pm. These are a blast for all ages, with torch-lighted trails, a sledding hill, and hot chocolate at the nature center. Many other area parks and nature centers have beautiful trails that are maintained for cross-country skiers too. These offer rentals for those just wanting to give it a try, and offer both kid and adult sizes. Some of these parks also offer ice skating, sledding, and more. In th e Lansing area, check out Birchfield Park and Lake Lansing Parks in Ingham County, Harris Nature Center in Meridian Township, and Fenner Nature Center in Lansing. For some incredible trails up north, don’t miss ABR Trails , which has the most miles of groomed cross-country ski trails (45.3) in the state. And did you know that in the winter the entire east side of Mackinac Island is shut off not only to cars but even to snowmobiles? It’s open solely to cross-country skiers, hikers and snowshoers – it’s quite an experience to explore the winter in a wonderland of uninterrupted beauty! Cost: Rentals are $5 per hour, $15 per day and $50 for the weekend Cross-country ski clinic is $10 per person, $15 including rentals. For the snowshoeing class: $15 for one 2-hour session, or $20 if you need to rent shoes. “B y the Light of the Moon” night is $2 per person, $5 with rentals.

These bikes can power through snow and icy terrain, and there are plenty of places to bike in the winter around Michigan . Crystal Mountain has groomed trails and bike rentals. Boyne Highlands offers a groomed winter bike track. The Winter Sports Singletrack in Traverse City has a 15k track. Farther south, you can find trails at Yankee Springs Recreation Area . The Waterloo Recreation Area in Chelsea also has 8 miles of groomed trails for winter biking. Cost: 1 hour: $19 per person. A trail pass is included in the rental fee .

Two Michigan favorites are Boyne Mountain Resort in Boyne Falls and Crystal Mountain in Thompsonville. Boyne Mountain also has horse-drawn wagon rides, snow tubing, indoor/outdoor pool and hot tubs, and Avalanche Bay water park. In the Upper Peninsula, check out Mont Ripley Ski Area in Hancock and Porcupine Mountains Ski Area in Ontonagon. Cannonsburg is a great place to go for a quick trip. Extremely kid-friendly and with tubing too, it’s a fun way to spend a day outside with the fam. Or, check out these other favorites for fun and affordable family skiing and snowboarding in many other Michigan towns. Cost: Depends on the day, time, and deal! Boyne Mountain and Crystal Mountain offer season passes, day or flex lift tickets, and online deals.

Take a Toboggan Run

450 Lane 100 Lake James Angola, IN 46703 This one isn’t technically in Michigan, but it’s an easy drive and we just had to include it because it’s so much fun! Pokagon State Park in Angola, Indiana has a refrigerated Toboggan Run. The 30-foot tower has dips and valleys, with the total vertical drop 90 feet over the course of a quarter-mile. It’s a 20 to 30-second thrill ride, with the highest recorded speed 42 mph. Cost: $20 per toboggan per hour. Park  entrance fees: $9 out-of-state vehicles, $2 per person on  a bu s

Ice Skate in the Outdoors

Campus Martius Park, 800 Woodward Ave, Detroit, MI 48226 Rosa Parks Circle 135 Monroe Center St NW Grand Rapids, MI 49503 Moran Bay, Lake Huron There are so many great places to go ice skating outdoors in Michigan. Detroit: The Rink at Campus Martius Park opens with the official lighting of the Christmas tree in November and is open through mid-March. After skating, grab a cup of hot chocolate in the Cadillac Square Lounge to warm up. Cost: Adults $11; Kids (12 & Under) $8; Seniors (59 & Older) $8; Skate Rental $5 Grand Rapids: Rosa Parks Circle in the center of downtown is a fun place to skate with the company and charm of the beautiful city. Cost: Adults $3, Kids $1 (what a deal, and price includes skates!) St. Ignace: Skating on Moran Bay in St. Ignace gives you a one-of-a-kind experience of skating on the actual Great Lakes! During the winter, little league hockey teams use the ice as a practice rink and the bay is free for the public to use. If you go in February, be sure to check out the Labatt Blue U.P. Pond Hockey Championships . Cost: Free, bring your own skates

Watch Snowmobile Racing

984 W 4th Ave, Sault Ste. Marie, MI 49783 You can find the world’s largest snowmobile race right here in Michigan at the Annual International 500 Snowmobile Race . Dozens of racers go the 500-mile distance, racing around the 1-mile track at speeds over 100 mph. Or, catch other area races here. Cost: Parking/Admission is $3 for the day or $15 for the week. You can also camp or reserve special seats .

Discover Ice Sailing

West Michigan Ice Yacht Club, 3198 Edgewater St, Muskegon, MI 49441 This is one winter sport that isn’t as well-known, but we’re adding it to the list, because it should be! Ice sailing is simply powering winter sports, like sailing, skating, skiing, and snowboarding, by the environment or by wind so that you can do them directly on the ice. People say the adrenaline and experience of ice sailing is like no other. Any place along the shores of Lake Michigan, where it’s frozen and you can catch the wind, is a great place to try the sport. Or, just go to watch! Sailing clubs often have groups or individuals that offer lessons and outings. Find a club here.

Try a Little of Everything at a Winter Sports Park

1100 Winter Park Ln, Petoskey, MI 49770 462 Scenic Drive, N. Muskegon, MI 49445 Winter Sports Parks are a one-size-fits-all winter stop. You can find a ton of different activities for all the different ages and interests of your gang! The Petoskey Winter Sports Park has areas for sledding, ice skating, hockey, skiing or snowboarding. The ice rinks are resurfaced daily. There is also a warming house with a fireplace, seating, concession stand, and restrooms. While you’re in the area, be sure to stop by downtown Petoskey too. This is one of my favorite towns to visit in Michigan. Walk the streets for fun boutique shopping, delicious eats, and a general store that carries local favorites while giving you the feeling of stepping back in time. The views of Lake Michigan as you enter and then explore the city are spectacular year-round. Cost: Ice skate rental is $7. Admission to the park is free. Private Groups may also reserve the H ockey Rink in one-hour increments at $25/hour. The Muskegon Winter Sports Complex is another great winter park, best known for its Olympian-designed luge, but it has way more to offer winter visitors too! The park has over nine miles of cross-country ski trails, half of which are lit for night skiing. There are also three ice skating rinks for hockey, family skating, and a kiddie rink. The park’s snowshoe trails wind through the dunes along the shore of Lake Michigan. And the heated sports lodge has rentals, food, and a fireplace to warm little hands and toes. Bonus: Muskegon’s track chair program helps visitors with wheelchairs explore areas of the park where traditional wheelchairs can’t reach. These off-road, electronic chairs can easily handle trails, snow, sand and up to 8 inches of water. Cost: Daily admission is $5, and each activity has a separate charge. Check out rates here .

Swim and Splash in an Indoor Water Park

There’s something magical about swimming and splashing in 80-degree water while looking up at the skies and glass walls as the snow floats down around you. Indoor water parks give a break from the snow or are perfect on rainy winter days where snow sports aren’t possible. For a day of (what feels like) tropical warmth and fun, a must-do is Traverse City’s Great Wolf Lodge . The park has water slides, wave pools and rooms decorated in fun cabin themes. Other indoor water parks include Avalanche Bay at Boyne Mountain (Michigan’s biggest), the Gold Rush Water Park at Double JJ Resort, which has West Michigan’s tallest indoor water slide, and Zehnder’s Splash Village Hotel and Waterpark . Cost: Rates vary depending on park and whether you stay overnight or get day passes. Check each website for more details.

Visit Frankenmuth

There is no place like Frankenmuth , a true German Village known for its Bavarian-style architecture, authentic chicken dinners, and the world-famous Bronner’s Christmas Wonderland. A walk around this city mid-winter is nothing but a delight – you just can’t help but feel cozy and festive as you wander the quaint streets. One of my favorite winter activities in Frankenmuth is Zehnder’s Snowfest , where we love to walk around and see the incredibly detailed and enormous snow sculptures that line the streets. The Snowfest also features a warming tent, petting zoo, children’s activity area, and fireworks.

Warm-up at Winter Festivals All Winter Long

There are so many winter festivals in Michigan to explore! There’s nothing better than a weekend full of festivity and fun to warm you up from the inside out and give you a reason to get out to new towns to explore something new. A few winter favorites to note: The World of Winter in Grand Rapids brings art work to the city in the winter. Installations include ice sculptures, lights and other interactive exhibits. The Winter Carnival at Michigan Tech started in 1922 and has grown into one of the biggest annual winter celebrations in the nation. Known for huge, intricate snow statues, there are also broomball competitions, comedy skits, human ice bowling, and a queen coronation. The Michigan Ice Fest in Munising, MI is Feb 12-16. This festival is for ice climbers to gather together for a week and climb around Pictured Rocks. For non-athletes, this is a fun time to visit the area, see the beauty of the waterfalls, and watch athletes in action. The Meridian Winter Blast is held in February in downtown Detroit. With exciting live entertainment and culinary cuisine for the foodies, Winter Blast is a favorite of locals and brings in visitors from all over the state. A popular ice fishing event is Tip-Up Town U.S.A , held in January in Houghton Lake. Thousands of people go to the annual winter festival that has children’s activities, a parade and chili cook-off, and an ice fishing contest weigh-in with fireworks.

Step Outside to Experience Michigan in Its Winter Glory

When the snow falls in Michigan, some days you don’t have to go anywhere! Simply stepping out of your back door can usher you into a winter wonderland. Bundle up and go out with the kids for some snow angels, neighborhood snowball fights, or to build a snowman. The fresh air is rejuvenating, and nothing beats the beauty of newly laid snow.

Michigan has something to entice just about every kind of traveler. From some of the country's best lake vacations  to charming towns to bustling cities, the Great Lakes State has it all. To help you decide which spots are right for your next vacation, U.S. News considered factors like number of activities, availability of accommodations and sentiment among travelers to decide the best places to visit in Michigan. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

Known for its breathtaking scenery, Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is covered in sand dunes that tower more than 450 feet above Lake Michigan. Visitors can climb to the top of the dunes to admire their surroundings or enjoy a picnic lunch at the bottom. The protected area also offers nearly 100 miles of trails for hiking, biking and snowshoeing, including the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, which weaves its way around the lakeshore past many of the park's dunes and bodies of water.

Pictured Rocks, America's first national lakeshore, overlooks Lake Superior in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Its beautiful, diverse landscape attracts outdoorsy types year-round. On the lakeshore's roughly 100 miles of hiking trails, travelers can see everything from spring wildflowers to colorful fall foliage to stunning ice formations, depending on the season. Plus, visitors can swim and boat in the warmer months and ice climb and cross-country ski during the colder months. But remember, lifeguards do not patrol the lakeshore's beaches, so vacationers should be careful when getting in Lake Superior's unpredictable waters.

Mackinac Island's old-world charm (think: horse-drawn carriages and Victorian-style buildings) creates the perfect backdrop for a romantic getaway or family vacation. The island banned cars in 1898, so tourists – or Fudgies as locals call them – can only access the island by private boat, ferry or plane. Once on Mackinac, visitors can taste some of its world-famous fudge, tour historical sites like Fort Mackinac and explore the island's state park, which covers more than 80% of the island. Keep in mind, though, that many of Mackinac Island's attractions are closed during the winter months despite the island being accessible year-round.

Occupying nearly 50,000 acres on Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Tahquamenon Falls State Park offers travelers ample opportunities to reconnect with nature. Lace up your hiking boots to explore the park's 35-plus miles of trails, get out on the Tahquamenon River on a kayak or snap a photo in front of the Upper Tahquamenon Falls, Michigan's largest waterfall. Fishing and camping are popular pastimes in summer, and come winter, visitors can enjoy outdoor activities like cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Keep in mind, travelers will need a valid Michigan Recreation Passport to gain admission to the park.

Dubbed the Cherry Capital of the World, Traverse City feels more like a small town than one of the most populated destinations in northern Michigan. As one of the Midwest's top weekend getaway destinations , the town is known for its charming downtown area and its emerging wine scene, which includes nearly 40 vineyards and wineries. To enjoy warm weather and fun seasonal events like the National Cherry Festival and the Traverse City Film Festival, plan a summer visit.

If you're looking for a tranquil getaway sans distractions, set your sights on Isle Royale National Park. This car-free Lake Superior archipelago is made up of more than 400 islands, all of which can only be accessed via boat or seaplane. While here, travelers can take part in a variety of activities, including hiking, kayaking, wildlife viewing, fishing and scuba diving (Isle Royale is home to ten major shipwrecks). Remember, the park is open from mid-April through October and offers limited services, so plan accordingly.

Located on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, Saugatuck is a haven for visitors and locals come summertime. Explore the lake on a boat cruise or grab a spot in the sand at one of several beaches – Oval Beach and Saugatuck Dunes State Park are both popular picks among travelers. At the latter, thrill-seekers can opt for an exhilarating ride across Saugatuck's famous dunes. Just make sure you leave some time for browsing the goods sold at the town's eclectic boutiques along Butler Street.

This western Michigan town takes its Dutch heritage seriously. During the holiday season, the downtown area transforms into a tribute to all Dutch holiday traditions, complete with roaming carolers and a European-style, open-air Christmas market called Kerstmarkt. Come spring, visitors can celebrate the town's millions of tulip blooms during the Tulip Time Festival, which hosts fun parades and events like traditional Dutch dancing and live musical performances. Must-visit Windmill Island Gardens is an optimal location for viewing these colorful flowers, and families won't want to miss a trip to Nelis' Dutch Village, a Dutch-themed amusement park offering rides, games and more.

This town on Lake Michigan's northeastern shore is one of the state's best tourist destinations. Perhaps best known as a cold-weather vacation spot, Petoskey is home to three major ski resorts with more than 160 slopes and multiple terrain parks. Visitors can also try other winter activities like ice skating, snowmobiling and sledding. For less-adventurous travelers, there's the historic Gaslight District, which is filled with a variety of shops and restaurants. For a one-of-a-kind experience, search for Petoskey stones at Petoskey State Park – these unique fossils can often be found hiding along the Lake Michigan shoreline.

While you'll find plenty of public art and some top-notch museums here, the real reason to visit Grand Rapids is to try its brews. Home to dozens of craft breweries, Grand Rapids has become an award-winning beer destination, so much so that it has earned the nickname of Beer City USA. You'll find guided beer tours, hard cider tastings and even hotel beer packages that bundle your accommodations with extras like free pints and souvenir glasses. Visit Mackinac Island : Located between Michigan’s upper and lower peninsula Mackinac Island is a throw back to another era. T

his car-free island is home to many festivals, ghost stories, fudge, horses, gorgeous scenery and, of course, the Grand Hotel.

Plan at least a 2-day visit and spend the night on the island. Shepler’s Ferry will boat you from the mainland to the Island and back.

Camp : Some of the best camping in the state is found in the Upper Peninsula

Waterfalls : More than 300 waterfalls dot Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Some are visible from the roadside and others take a bit of a hike.

The falls range in height from 5′ to 48+’. Pack a lunch and extra water because you can easily spend an entire day visiting and viewing a handful of the falls.

Rockhounding for Agates : Rockhounds flock to the Lake Superior shoreline to hunt for these iron-stained banded stones.

If you are new to searching for agates I find it easiest to look in very shallow waters for the stones since the water helps the banding and colors shine through.

Kayak : With over tens of thousands of miles of rivers and streams there is always a river nearby to go kayaking .

Fly a kite : With so many Great Lakes shoreline miles there is always a place to go fly a kite .

Swim in 4 of the 5 Great Lakes : Erie, Huron, Superior and Michigan all touch Michigan giving you the opportunity to swim in 4 of the 5 great lakes.

Micro breweries, wineries, and distilleries : There are over 100 wineries, over 100 breweries, and 20 distilleries. Both Southwest Michigan and the greater Traverse City region have a large number of brews, wines, and spirits.

Drive in movie : It’s a throwback to another era, but there are still a few drive-in movie theaters in the state. My favorite is the Cherry Bowl Drive-In in Honor.

Play Ball : Summer is baseball season and there are games happening all across the state. If you prefer to watch instead of play there are great teams here. I prefer watching minor league baseball, it’s a lot more family friendly.

Minor league teams include Great Lake Loons, Lansing Lugnuts, and West Michigan Whitecaps. Of course, if you want to watch a major league team you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Detroit Tigers.

Putt-Putt : Michigan is full of championship golf courses, but for those of us who are more comfy on the putt-putt courses there are plenty to choose from. In my opinion, putt-putt is a lot more fun and a lot less stressful.

Camping : Tents, RV’s or camping cabins are all great ways to overnight in the great outdoors. I still do some tent camping , but I’m slowly converting to a cabin.

I appreciate the quick set up of cabins, basically just show up with bedding and enjoy time outdoors. My favorite places to camp are in the Upper Peninsula and Upper Lower Peninsula, but there are plenty of campsite across the entire state.

Picnic : Pack a basket and head to a local park to enjoy lunch or dinner outdoors. There is just something very relaxing about getting away from the hustle and bustle of home to enjoy eating outside.

Visit Paradise and Hell : It’s true, you can go to Hell or Paradise or both during your visit to Michigan.

Geocache : Go on a modern day treasure hunt with geocaching. Containers of all shapes and sizes are hidden in forests, parks, and urban areas just waiting for you to find them and take a treasure from inside.

Roast marshmallows over a campfire : We are lucky enough to be able to have a small campfire in our backyard and marshmallow roasting is a regular summer event.

Check fire laws for your area and always take safety precautions. If your backyard isn’t an option, look for a hotel that offers patio fires and s’more making. Two that come to mind are Boyne Mountain and Harbor Grand.

Pick Your Own Fruit : Cherries, blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, apples, and more are available to pick during the summer and fall.

My favorite site is PickYourOwn.org which lists the farms and what fruits and veggies are ripe for the picking and when.

Shop quaint downtowns : Some of the best shopping is found in quaint downtowns around the state. I, personally, enjoy shopping in Traverse City and Petoskey, but other great areas include St. Joseph, Royal Oak and Grand Rapids.

Visit Michigan Lighthouses : There are 129 lighthouses along the shores of Michiga n. How many can you see this summer?

Campus Martius Park in Detroit has been named the No. 1 Best Public Space in the nation in USA Today's 2024 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards .

Campus Martius, according to readers, serves as Detroit’s gathering place, where locals and visitors alike can come to take in the skyline views, people-watch around the Woodward Fountain, grab a meal from a food truck, or go ice skating in winter.

In the summer, you can also watch a movie, listen to live music or play in the sand there.

Public squares have long been the keystones of American communities, serving as the stage for everything from farmers’ markets to historic speeches, according to 10Best . They're the heartbeats of cities, where culture pulses and people gather, it says.

Students create innovative concepts to welcome new residents with state’s population growth effort

Students from the University of Michigan’s Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning participated in a consulting project with the state of Michigan’s population growth campaign, Let’s Grow Michigan. Over the last semester, students focused on creating innovative concepts to welcome new residents into Michigan communities and presented. They presented their ideas to local leaders, U-M officials and the growth team at Newlab in Detroit.

“Being able to work with the only urban technology program in the nation, which also happens to be my alma mater, has been incredibly rewarding,” said Michigan’s first-ever Chief Growth Officer Hilary Doe. “This idea came about while I was on the road listening and speaking with Michiganders last year. I learned that we need great places, great opportunities and welcoming communities to retain current residents and welcome new ones. I’m grateful to the students who have participated in this work. To see their ideas morph into tangible concepts is incredible. Their findings on how we can best welcome new faces to Michigan will make the state an even better place to call home for everyone.” 

Offered as part of a first-of-its-kind undergraduate degree program in urban technology, the course “Service Design and Urban Needs” focuses on developing creative ideas at the intersection of design and technology to meet fundamental urban needs. During the winter 2024 semester, 18 junior-level students worked in groups to research, develop and finalize three concepts. To ensure their concepts represent the needs of Michigan’s communities, students interviewed stakeholders across sectors to inform the design process. 

Devin Vowels, a junior urban technology student from Rochester Hills says gaining real-world career experience in a class format enabled her to create and problem-solve without workplace pressures.

“I have learned how much I enjoy concept building, strategic thinking and prototype design,” said Vowels. “I’ve also learned how to tell the stories of the people we’re designing for, as well as the story of our project and how it fits into people’s lives.”

The three concepts are:  

• Fourth Spaces: A digital platform used to bring Michiganders together by hosting pop-up events at local businesses. This tool connects existing resources like storefronts with new opportunities for economic and social engagement. 
• MittenCorps: A talent retention program that connects Michigan-educated graduates to job opportunities in mid-sized Michigan cities. This program would be a collaboration between cities, businesses and people.
• WorldWide MI: A culturally curated service for discovering and connecting communities in Michigan. This digital platform enables people to have culturally relevant experiences that allows them to discover new interests and leads them to form genuine connections with others through their shared experiences.

“These projects are examples of how service design can be used to address gaps or points of friction within whole systems,” said Bryan Boyer, director of Urban Technology program and assistant professor of practice in architecture. “Contributing to the very important question of how to kickstart growth in the state of Michigan is a tremendous experience for the students and a courageous demonstration of MEDC’s creativity in taking on this challenge.”

As efforts to grow Michigan’s population progress, there is hope that these ideas presented by U-M students will act as a jumping-off point for a future pilots targeted at streamlining the onboarding process for new Michiganders. 

Michigan’s efforts to grow the population kicked off with the announcement of the state’s first-ever chief growth officer and creation of the Growing Michigan Together Council last summer. Since the council released its recommendations in December, the report has received traction in legislative hearings, in Gov. Whitmer’s proposed 2025 budget recommendations and among community organizations across the state. The broader population growth effort includes engagement with Michiganders statewide and efforts to tell Michigan’s story across the nation.

Michigan is notorious for having brutal winters, especially in the westernmost and northern parts of the state. The good news is that all the gorgeous attractions turn into amazing winter destinations . This translates into a spectacular opportunity to take winter scenic drives in Michigan .

Upper Peninsula Winter Scenic Drives With Panoramic Views

Copper country trail national byway (us-41).

The Copper Country Trail National Byway winds through the old mining country of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It’s an especially popular destination during the winter, when abundant snow draws outdoor sports enthusiasts.

But even from the road, this Keweenaw Peninsula route is worth riding. It offers access to some of the state’s most beautiful natural features, such as Lake Superior and McLain State Park.

If you’re looking for a leisurely road trip, this is the perfect choice. You’ll find plenty of places to stop and take in the incredible views. The natural features have an ancient history, with many of the rock formations dating back 1 billion years.

Meanwhile, the forests include a wide variety of trees that provide lovely views no matter the season. Winter sports enthusiasts should have the state park on their list of destinations — the surrounding vistas make it a perfect place for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. 

Calumet to Copper Harbor (M-26)

The route that winds from the town of Calumet to Copper Harbor is one that you’ll want to drive again and again. What makes this one of the best winter scenic drives in Michigan is the snowfall, which offers unparalleled views of the surrounding scenery.

At the beginning of the route, you’ll ride along the Eagle River, which offers a great road trip with views of nearby falls and historic lighthouses. Jacobs Falls, for instance, includes a short hike from the road. You could easily spend a day in Eagle Harbor too.

M-26 stretches along Lake Superior, with a few places to stop along the way, until it reaches Copper Harbor, where winter creates an unrivaled peace. The snowfall makes you feel like you’re the only person in the world. It’s the kind of quiet that most of us don’t experience in our daily lives!

Black River Harbor National Forest Scenic Byway (CR-513)

The Black River Harbor National Forest Scenic Byway is one of the most beautiful road trips in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. It’s characterized by fascinating rock formations and stunning waterfalls through Ottawa National Forest.

At just 14 miles long, the byway is perfect for a short day trip and is packed with beautiful sights along the way, including Potawatomi Falls, Gorge Falls, and Rainbow Falls. Winter waterfall viewing is an unmissable tourist attraction.

You’ll find snowshoes for rent nearby, making it easy to trek up to see the frozen natural wonders. Brave explorers have even been known to walk across the falls when they’re frozen over (though they do it at their own risk)!

Marquette to Munising (M-28)

Michigan State Route 28 is a beautiful 43-mile drive along the southern shore of Lake Superior. The drive kicks off from Marquette and wraps up in Munising, widely known as the town of waterfalls.

Along the way you’ll get the chance to visit some of Michigan’s most beloved natural sites, including Presque Isle Park, Wagner Falls, and Au Train Beach.

Presque Isle Park is the perfect place to visit during the winter. The winds off Lake Superior create a perfect climate for unique ice formations along the beach and cliffs, such as the Black Rocks . Even more stunning are the one-of-a-kind ice caves that form from waves cresting on the beach.

Before you jump on M-28, be sure to explore some of the best winter things to do in Marquette , and end your Michigan scenic drive with winter fun in Munising .

Newberry to Paradise (M-123)

M-123 is one of the most popular winter scenic drives in Michigan in the Upper Peninsula. Though there are plenty of fascinating cultural and historical sites along this scenic drive, the scenery is widely considered the best part.

Most of the land in the region is undeveloped and protected, offering unique opportunities to see Michigan at its most wild — complete with pristine waterfalls and moose and deer making their way through the woods. For the lucky few, there’s a chance to get a glimpse at the Northern Lights .

You’ll also want to make a stop at Tahquamenon Falls during winter . The waterfalls are famously known as the Root Beer Falls and often freeze in very cold temperatures, creating a fascinating view of a world stopped by winter. The Upper Falls is the second largest waterfall east of the Mississippi.

The national park is open year-round for winter activities (and camping, for the brave ones). And at the end of your journey, the  Tahquamenon Falls Brewery & Pub  will be waiting for you with Porcupine Pale Ale and Lake Superior Whitefish!

Lake Scenic Byway (US-2)

US Route 2 was designated the Lake Scenic Byway in 2018. This route, running 92 miles along the northern shore of Lake Michigan, offers stunning views of the lake and surrounding forests. You can travel straight from St. Ignace to Thompson, a trip that’s designed for people who love nature.

Before you start your adventure, you could explore fun things to do in St. Ignace .

Attractions along this route include Castle Rock , Seul Choix Point Lighthouse, and Manistique Lakeshore Campground. These high outlooks offer the chance to enjoy views of the icy beach and lake, which are stunning enough to make up for a winter trek!

Along the way, you also have the chance to extend your winter scenic drive with a jaunt down M-183 to Fayette Historic State Park.

Mackinaw City to Eben Ice Caves (US-2 and M-28)

The Eben Ice Caves are one of the most popular outdoor tourist destinations in Michigan, but this route features countless sights. Starting in Mackinaw City, a shoreside resort in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, the trip crosses the Mackinac Bridge and hits some of the most scenic sites in the Upper Peninsula.

This includes Munising — home to several famous waterfalls — the Hiawatha National Forest, and Canyon Gorge. The whole drive is perfect for the winter, with the ice caves drawing thousands of visitors every year to enjoy one of Michigan’s most unique winter experiences . 

The Eben Ice Caves form when snow pours off the beachside cliffs, creating fascinating ice walls. You’ll be amazed at how thick the ice really is — thick enough to support the weight of an adult as evidenced by the popular activity of ice climbing!

Beautiful Views on Winter Scenic Drives in Michigan’s Lower Peninsula

Tunnel of trees (m-119).

Michigan’s Tunnel of Trees on M-119 is one of the most famous road trip routes in the state. This forested trail of evergreens and hardwoods meet above the road, forming the distinctive “tunnel” that makes you feel like you’re completely sheltered.

In winter, the route between Cross Village and Harbor Springs is a distinctively beautiful experience. The surrounding trees are truly a breathtaking sight when covered in snow. Also, the peaceful snow offers a unique chance to spot animal life, such as winter birds, deer, and herons.

The nearby Bear River offers the chance to hike, ride a fat tire bike, and enjoy the winter scenery. On a clear day, you’ll be blown away by bluffs, beaches, stately trees, and some truly awesome houses. Best of all, the nearly 30-mile scenic winter drive doesn’t have as much traffic as in the summer. 

At the end of your road trip, check out all the fantastic Petoskey winter things to do .  Stafford’s Perry Hotel offers a spectacular view of Little Traverse Bay from the H.O. Rose Dining Room all year!

Manistee to Traverse City (M-22)

M-22 is one of the most winter scenic drives in Michigan’s northwest . This trail winds around Lake Michigan and the Leelanau Peninsula, offering vistas of the water and surrounding forests, cliffs, and hills. It’s so picturesque that it has been named by USA Today as one of the nation’s most scenic drives. 

The route covers 116 miles of coastline around Lake Michigan from Manistee to Traverse City. It features views of rolling hills, farmland, and one-of-a-kind nature reserves, the most of which famous is Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore .

The sand dunes at Sleeping Bear are peak wild Michigan, almost untouched by humankind. Winter brings out a fascinating side to the dunes, decorated with unique ice formations thanks to the climate of the Great Lakes. 

At the beginning of your trip, discover unique experiences in Manistee . Then, you can experience more unique things to do in Traverse City at the end of your trip.

Port Huron to Bay City (US-25)

From Port Huron, US-25 runs up and around the tip of Michigan’s Thumb and over to Bay City. This scenic “Thumb drive” has a long and fascinating history. More importantly, it offers some of the most beautiful and unique views of the winter scenic drives in Michigan.

The route follows the coastlines of Lake Huron and Saginaw Bay, offering breathtaking outlooks over the water. Along the way, you’ll see historical sites, century-old architecture, and even a ghost town.

In fact, Port Huron has an interesting history . You can explore the Port Huron Museum, view the Blue Water Bridge, and wander around the historic downtown district before setting off.

Port Huron and other small towns are full of gorgeous Victorian houses, pretty roadside parks, and great shops and restaurants make this the perfect winter road trip. We recommend stopping in Harbor Beach, Port Austin, Caseville, and Sebawaing.

On top of that, driving US-25 lets you enjoy beach views you’ve never seen, including the wetlands along the Thumb, where you may spot rare birds and other animal life. You can end your journey in Bay City, or follow the Saginaw Bay coastline to explore things to do in Tawas City .

Huron River Drive

Huron River Drive is one of the most scenic drives you can find in Metro Detroit. It winds alongside the Huron River and through many small communities on the outskirts of Ann Arbor, each of them offering unique outlooks of the surrounding landscape.

During your trip, you can enjoy pleasant views of the river, which is beautiful in the winter. Many undeveloped areas in the vicinity draw visitors for winter sports, including ice skating and snowshoeing, too.

Huron River Drive is one of the best winter scenic drives in Michigan for getting close to nature without venturing too far from the city center. Even though it’s winter, there are ways to enjoy Metro Detroit while staying warm . You can find a lot of winter things to do in Ann Arbor as well.

Detroit to New Buffalo (US-12)

The US-12 Heritage Trail is one of Michigan’s most beloved celebrations of culture, history, and nature. Along the way, you can enjoy 200 miles of Michigan nature — forests, prairies, rolling hills, and beaches. About midway into the journey, the road follows the southern border of the Lower Peninsula. 

An interesting feature on the trail is extremely ancient natural formations dating from at least 10,000 years ago. The precursor to the current highway was built in the 1820s, making it one of the oldest in the United States.

In the 200 years since then, the site has remained a popular tourist destination thanks to the presence of the Irish hills. These striking formations also feature multiple lookout towers that offer unparalleled views of the surrounding Michigan landscape.
