Travelers' pro tips or experiencing oahu.

Breathe, slow down, get in the slow lane of life. You live in the fast lane back home.

tripadvisor oahu tours

There’s a reason why this far-flung archipelago of tropical islands in the middle of the Pacific Ocean is considered a surfer’s paradise: big waves! Swim with caution.

tripadvisor oahu tours

What to pack: Shorts/T-shirts for anyone, sundresses for ladies if you like ... or capris. Most everyone wears slippers (flip flops/thongs). Weather is plenty warm. You will want a light jacket or sweater for the evenings as the weather can be cooler, esp with a breeze. (But not cold, mind you.) Jeans for the plane, and if you are planning to hike or do a lot of walking you might want tennis shoes. Dress is super casual.

tripadvisor oahu tours

Sample the cuisines influenced by various cultures -- Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Thai, Korean -- you can find all of it and more here on the island!

tripadvisor oahu tours

Make sure you wear comfortable shoes for a day of exploring...don't wear your flip-flops like the locals unless you are used to it!

Oahu is a place for all people to slow down, relax, decompress. There are numerous things to do on the island. Tastes from around the world to enjoy, and golf as well as shopping. Sitting on a rock under a palm tree on the North Shore and watching the big surf is something you cannot do in Cleveland.

When is the best time to visit?

The best time to visit Oahu is during a shoulder season: from mid-April to early June or between September and mid-December. Attractions are less crowded, rates are lower, and there are lots of festivals taking place. Expect temperatures in the low 70s (21°C) to high-80s (31°C) in either season.

Renting a car is essential for those who wish to independently explore the island. Rentals are available at the airport and various locations downtown.

Biki is a bicycle-sharing program on Oahu. Visitors can purchase passes for a one-way trip or for multiple stops.

The public bus service oh Oahu is called TheBus, which runs services around the whole island, including the North Shore. If you are planning to make multiple journeys, you can purchase a day or monthly pass. Note that transfers and large luggage are not allowed.

Allow others to disembark before boarding, don’t take up more than one seat, and stand to offer seating to the elderly, pregnant women, or someone with a disability.

Take your shoes off

In Hawaii, it's customary to take your shoes off before entering the home.

Practice beach etiquette

Malama ka ʻaina, or, “take care of the land.” Dispose of your trash properly and keep your distance from turtles and other wildlife.

You’re on Hawaiian time, and it is considered improper to show impatience in line or to honk your horn.

Dropping in (taking off on a wave when you don’t have right of way) is a big no-no in Hawaii. The surfer who is closest to where the wave is breaking has priority.

Respect Kupuna

See Why We're the Best Hawaii Tour Operator

Makani is very friendly and made booking the trip so easy. Tiho was our guide and made the trip fun and exciting. He had great stories to tell along the way. He even made some extra stops for us. Would definitely recommend this company over one of the bigger bus tours.

Ankala Tony (Uncle.Tony) is a man with a big heart and many talents that my wife and I felt privileged to behold. We soon discovered that we were in the company of a professional caliber comedian who combined side splitting humor with poignant informative narratives about his beautiful island home. One highlight involved Tony sharing his blissful vocal gift and ukelele skills.

King Mike, you LEGEND!!!!!! My wife, 12 year old son and I were lucky enough to be taken on a tour today with King Mike as our guide, what an experience. What ever he is getting paid, double it. The knowledge he shared with us about the history of Hawaii was outstanding.

We highly recommend Go Tours Hawaii. We were looking to book a tour to the north shore for 12 people and our own van with a tour driver; other companies were more expensive and one company we booked didn’t turn up, so nearly gave up until we bumped into Rodney who was so friendly, helpful, professional and gave us a really good deal.

Ray was the tour guide this day and he was awesome! He did a great job of pointing out a lot of different things as well as introducing us to local Hawaiian culture. Most of the time you drive around the North Shore in the bus - thankfully the air condition was not to cool. At each tour highlight you have a short stop (15 to 40 min.) to take pictures or explore the location.

If I took a 5 year old to a luau, I'd want to be at one I could walk back to my room if I could, which would mean the Starlight Luau at Hilton Hawaiian Village or Queen's Luau at the International Market Place .

I would not do PCC because I would not to be that car from my hotel late in the evening.

Otherwise I'd say Experience Nutridge or the day luau at Toa Luau .

I think a 5 can enjoy Toa or Nutridge. I would find the IMP one especially depressing. HHV would be slightly better.

The best thing about the Polynesian Cultural Center is its evening show. The best Polynesian entertainment in the state. That said I don't think a 5 year old would enjoy it due to the length of the day.

If you want a luau on Kauai check out Luau Kalamaku at the Kilohana Plantation. Add the train ride, that's something a 5 year old would get a kick out of.

Aloha and Mahalo!!
