Helloween & Hammerfall Concert Review

Helloween brought their United Forces 2023 world tour to Toronto, Canada on May 23 with special guests Hammerfall. This leg of the world tour includes this only Canadian date and twelve additional stops in the United States. Helloween return with the full “Pumpkins United” line-up including Kai Hansen (guitar / vocals), Andi Deris (vocals), Michael Kiske (vocals), Michael Weikath (guitar), Markus Grosskopf (bass), Sascha Gerstner (guitar) and Daniel Loble (drums). All four Helloween eras are represented with the original Kai led era, Kiske era, Deris era and the latest united version of the band.  

I was fortunate enough to see the Pumpkins United tour in 2018 on three different occasions in Germany (Wacken Open Air), New York and Montreal. All three concerts were outstanding so my expectations were sky high for this Toronto show and I’m delighted to report it was another amazing Helloween performance. It’s clear this expanded version of the band still enjoys touring and playing together. 

During the Pumpkins United tour, Helloween performed alone each night with lengthy extended sets but changed approach on this tour to include Sweden’s Hammerfall opening the show each night. Michael Kiske noted in recent interviews that show attendance is still uncertain in parts of Canada / USA so they wanted to diversify the line-up and help limit touring risk. Based on my previous personal experiences, the 2018 New York & Montreal shows were sold out but my friend attended the recent Dallas, USA show a week before this Toronto show and sadly the attendance was limited to just 300 – 350 people. I don’t know exact Toronto attendance numbers but I’m pretty sure it was at least a thousand strong and potentially more (it’s a large newer venue so difficult for me to judge).         

The show started with Hammerfall playing their own brand of melodic power metal which was likely influenced by 1980’s Helloween to some degree. The Hammerfall setlist was surprisingly broad with at least one songs from most of their discography (12 or 13 songs in total). The crowd enjoyed the performance helping sing all the catchy choruses. I saw many fans wearing Hammerfall T-shirts that night. I’m more of a casual fan but really enjoyed “Blood Bound”, “Let The Hammer Fall”, “Any Means Necessary” and the last song of the night “Hearts on Fire”. 

It was finally time for Helloween and the crowd was excited and eager to get started. The stage design was pretty straight forward. The elevated drum kit was surrounded by a large orange inflatable pumpkin with a large TV screen at the back of the stage playing various Helloween animation and other relevant clips throughout the show. The elevated drum riser provided room on each side that band members utilized during the show. 

Helloween kicked off their set with “Skyfall” from the latest self-titled album released in 2021. They also played “Mass Pollution” and “Best Times” from the new record. While I enjoyed hearing the new songs live for the first time, they just don’t hold the same nostalgia factor for me like the older classic material. Similarly, audience reaction was generally positive for the new songs but not to the same extent as the classics.   

The audience helped sing many of the old songs word-for-word including “Future World”, “Eagle Fly Free”, “Save Us”, “Dr. Stein” “How Many Tears” and the lengthy “Keeper of the Seven Keys”. I couldn’t wipe the smile of my face during these amazing songs that I grew up with. My one minor complaint of the night was the limited representation of the genius “Keepers I” album (only Future World was played). I certainly understand there’s no way to tackle everything on this tour with the band shifting to a normal set length and a new album of material to play. It’s clear to me the “Keepers I” and Deris era material was trimmed from the previous extended Pumpkin United sets. 

There’s often significant debate in the Helloween community around the Andi Deris era of the band but I was a big fan from day one. We were treated to a few songs from some key Deris albums including “Perfect Gentleman”, “Power”, and “Forever and One”. Andi sounded great live which is no small task when your singing beside the legend that is Michael Kiske. 

I loved the interaction and banter between Kiske and Deris as they sang together throughout the night. It’s evident to me they still enjoy performing together and egos are not getting in the way. It’s nice to see band cohesiveness remaining so strong. One key memory of the night was Kiske & Deris taking center stage sitting on stools singing “Forever and One” equally sharing the lines and chorus.

I continue to be impressed with Sasha on guitar who holds his own next to the legendary Hansen & Weikath which must be intimidating for a much younger guitarist sharing the stage with these metal veterans. Sasha has excellent stage presence and spoke to the crowd on multiple occasions, asking the audience at one point who was here from Quebec. He clearly knows the significance of the Montreal, Quebec metal scene and it’s importance within the overall Canadian metal scene. As a Montrealer, I thought that was pretty cool. 

The best memory for me occurred mid-set when kai took over the vocal duties and performed a medley of “Metal Invaders”, “Victim of Fate”, “Gorgar” and “Ride The Sky” followed by “Heavy Metal (Is the Law)”. Kai’s voice hasn’t aged as well as Kiske or Deris but getting the opportunity to hear the earliest original Helloween songs led by Kai who started the band is priceless for a long-time Helloween fan. It’s heavy metal history and I’m glad this material remained in the reduced setlist.  

The night ended on a high note with another classic Helloween song from Keepers II – “I Wan’t Out”. Significant audience singing participation encouraged by the band with large orange and black inflatable pumpkins falling into the audience. An incredible way to end a memorable night. Damn, I once again left the show without one of those coveted giant pumpkin souvenirs.    

I highly recommend this 2023 United Forces Helloween tour. These are true legendary heavy metal musicians who reunited to bring the fans a very special show. I think it’s probably safe to say this touring event won’t last forever and no guarantees of another world tour with the same original members (especially for us Canadians & Americans who only get a few shows every few years). It’s worth taking a mini-vacation traveling to one of these tour stops if you can. You won’t regret it.

The world tour everyone longed-for since over two years took us to 26 countries on 3 continents. After several pandemic related postponements the UNITED FORCES TOUR finally ignited in England May 2022 and brought together more than 800.000 fans, catapulting you into an euphoric orbit for a year and a half!

Sold out headline shows in Los Angeles, New York and Sao Paulo, legendary highlights like the show at the Prague O2-Arena, the Schleyerhalle in Stuttgart, or in front of 14.000 metalheads in Santiago de Chile and our first ever sold out concert at the iconic Budokan in Tokyo – the Holy Grail and the ultimate accolade for every rock band! 

Without a doubt there were tears in our eyes at the bombastic Hell & Heaven Festival in Mexico City, which closed the tour.  

Waving the UNITED FORCES flag, we opened a new live chapter after more than 35 years of band history: all seven of us rocked the stages, side by side with colleagues like Kiss, Scorpions or Deep Purple and, for the second time we headlined the Wacken Open Air!

We want to send our thanks to all of you, our loyal fans in Europe, the United States, Canada, Central & South America and Asia. We are incredibly grateful that you kept your tickets even with all the ongoing postponements and, that you stayed true fans, waiting patiently to finally see us live.

No reason to sit back: with the clip for “OUT FOR THE GLORY“ the next exciting coup is coming as the successful year is ending. "I had an idea for a video where all band members are depicted as dinky, odd noble courtiers and ministers" Michael Weikath explains. „All of us should be floating in the clouds, Deris as a nutty emperor…and after a while more and more details came up and at one point in time we wrote everything down and sent the video concept to the Australian animation team“. Aaron McLoughlin, Senior Lecturer at the University of Melbourne, who has already been involved in several projects with Atomic Fire Records CEO Florian Milz (e.g. for Children Of Bodom, Alestorm, Tankard) mentioned: „When I heard that HELLOWEEN is interested in a collaboration I was totally gobsmacked. The boys are my absolute heroes since I was a teenager and I was sure that my students would love to work on a song by this band.“

And typically HELLOWEEN  - the creativity was so outrageous that it was impossible to feature everything in one music video. „Seven and a half minutes might not sound like a lot but in animation terms it is a marathon. We had so much great stuff that the production of “OUT FOR THE GLORY“ was a real challenge. Weiki wanted the video to look as cute as possible and we immediately knew: A legendary band from the other side of the planet wants us to create a medieval epic full of cuteness? You bet!" McLoughlin recollects.

With a bit over 10.000 frames the iconic animation short movie is not only extremely elaborate, but also wicked and spacy, will cause a commotion and hopefully also a lot of fun and enjoyment. As Michael Weikath wishes with a twinkle in his eye: „I now expect that everyone will enjoy this and think it is funny and also that they see the signification!"

The animated music video “OUT FOR THE GLORY“ is celebrating its world premiere on December, 17th 2021 and was implemented by the students of Bachelor of Design (Animation & Interactive Media), RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia .

Swedish Brotherhood Tour 2023 Art Nation – support act

Once again the Swedish melodic power metal phenomenon Hammerfall is on tour in Sweden. This time they have brought along some different support acts that will appear on different dates. Starchaser, Freedom Call and Battle Beast opened some shows and in Malmö it was Art Nation’s turn to warm up the crowd. Despite the pandemic, Hammerfall have been busy releasing albums, with the live DVD/CD/Vinyl LIVE:AGAINST THE WORLD from 2020 and the 2022 album HAMMER OF THE DAWN as the latest release. A re-release of the band’s album CRIMSON THUNDER will be released soon to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary. Today the band is back on Nuclear Blast, where the band started. Last year the guys went on a South/North American tour and also toured with Helloween. This particular tour takes place on weekends and before the Malmö show the band played 6 shows, after the show there were only 3 shows left before it was time to get some rest.

I have to admit that I only knew the opening act by name, I’ve never seen them live nor do I own an album by them. As usual I was outside waiting for the doors to open about 20 minutes before the show and there was already a short line when I got there. Since Hammerfall is pretty big in Sweden, I thought the show would be sold out, but it wasn’t.

There was not much stuff on the stage when I entered and I had a look at the Hammerfall merch, which was quite good. At 8 pm it was time for Art Nation to start the evening.

“Don’t Wait For Salvation” started the show and the band’s singer had the fans screaming hey hey for the band. “Paralyzed” followed immediately and the song woke up the audience who started singing a long time in the song. The lead singer said it was great to be in Malmö and that the band was going to play a new song that was released a few weeks ago called “Brutal And Beautiful”. The four piece combo had a great sound and the lights worked in their favor and the singer moved around the stage during the whole show. Still, I wouldn’t call Art Nation a very visual band. The rest of the band stood solidly in their places and did their thing. Once again the lead singer thanked the fans for their support and said that since the band hadn’t released a new album in four years, they were going to play mostly old songs that night.

“The Real Me” came on and it was a song the fans had obviously been waiting to hear. The band’s classic hard rock/rock music maybe wasn’t the best fit to open for Hammerfall, but the Art Nation fans obviously loved what they heard. “Wage War Against the World” followed immediately, and even though I’m not a fan of the band, I soon realized that they were skilled on their instruments and the singer delivered some solid vocals. The guys seemed to have a good time on stage and let the music do the talking. “Need You To Understand” was the next song, after which the singer said it was time for a song that many might have heard before. If that was the case, then I want everybody to sing a long one with me, he said, and “Ghost Town” came on. He asked the fans to sing the chorus but it didn’t go well. It went better when he asked the fans to scream for the band.

Thanks Malmoe that was great he said, as we are the support act many of you probably don’t care about us and I guess you are here to see Hammerfall. Well we have one song left and I want you all to jump with me in “All In”. This song ended the 35 minutes long show and after thanking the fans Art Nation left the stage.

Art Nation gave a solid performance, but it wasn’t my cup of tea at all. I thought their music was a bit boring and they didn’t manage to convince me to buy their albums. It wasn’t bad and it wasn’t great, it was somewhere in the middle. It was a should shake kind of show.

Setlist Don’t Wait For Salvation Paralyzed Brutal And Beautiful The Real Me Wage the War Against the World Need You To Understand Ghost Town All In

As soon as Art Nation left the stage the crew started to prepare the stage for Hammerfall. Art Nation’s equipment was taken away and soon there was a huge backdrop with the Hammerfall logo on it and a long drum podium. On either side of the podium were smaller backdrops and at the edge of the stage was a microphone stand. That was it, when Hammerfall play in Sweden they usually reduce their backline a bit and keep only the most important equipment. More and more people entered the club and even though it wasn’t sold out, there were a lot of people. At 9:15 the intro was played and it was time for the Gothenburg band to conquer Malmö.

All members but one entered the stage and as soon as the intro of “Brotherhood” was over, singer Joakim Cans came out and faced the crowd. The fans clapped politely, but it seemed like they didn’t know what song the band was playing. Maybe they hadn’t listened to the new album HAMMER OF DAWN from which the song was taken. The fans were not given a chance to catch their breath, because right after that came one of the band’s most famous songs “Any Means Necessary” and this song really woke up the crowd who started singing along with the cans and clapping their hands. “The Metal Age” from the debut album GLORY TO THE BRAVE followed, after which Cans thanked the fans with a big smile on his face for coming. It’s been a long time since we’ve been here, but it feels great to be back in Malmö,” he said. During the pandemic we recorded a new album, have you heard it? Well if you have then you will recognize our next song “Hammer Of Dawn”.

The majority of the fans stood and watched the band perform the song and it didn’t seem like many had actually listened to the new album. “Blood Bound” really set the fans on fire and the sing along was a fact. Hammerfall is:

All the members moved around during the show, swapping places with each other and really trying to get the fans going. When it was time for Dronjak and Norgren to play their solos, Cans took a few steps back and let the duo take center stage. Cans introduced Norgren on lead guitar saying he wanted to see everyone’s hands in the air. The fans were on fire and really supported the band throughout the show. It was only when the newer songs were played that they took a step back to watch the show. When the fans heard the intro to “Renegade”, everyone was screaming at the top of their lungs, almost raising the roof of the club. It was quite obvious that the fans wanted to hear the old classic Hammerfall songs rather than the newer ones.

We’ve been on the road for a while now, Cans said, and soon we’ll be heading back to America. Many say that metal is long overdue, but when we see everyone standing here tonight, it’s clear that’s not the case. Metal isn’t dead, metal is alive and well. Next up is a new song that is about dying, you die once when you take your last breath of air and you die a little bit when you say the name of your loved one for the last time. Here is “Venerate Me”. And again the reaction of the crowd to the new songs was a bit lame.

I’ve never been a big fan of the band’s music, but I realize that you don’t mess around with the band’s huge back catalog of well-played melodic power metal hits. Almost all of the bands songs are really long friendly songs and contain some really catchy choruses and refrains. “Last Man Standing” set the fans on fire and once again the sing a long was a fact. Cans invited the fans to sing the chorus, which everyone did, really loudly. The members looked really happy with the fans response to the song and then it was time for a trip down memory lane. Cans said it was time to go back to 2002 and a song from the CRIMSON THUNDER album. Then he left the stage and the rest of the guys did a medley of “Heroe’s Return” and “On The Edge Of Honor” where Dronjak let the fans scream at his command. When Cans returned it was time to play another one of the band’s biggest hits in “Riders On The Storm” which was followed by “Crimson Thunder”. It was a short medley of songs from the album that lasted about six minutes or so.

At the end of April the band released CRIMSON THUNDER – 20th ANNIVERSARY as a box set with three CDs as well as a double vinyl version. It seems that the guys are fans of re-releasing their old albums and have already re-released versions of GLORY TO THE BRAVE, LEGACY OF KINGS and RENEGADE in anniversary editions.

Cans once again thanked the fans for their support and said that the band is about to re-release CRIMSON THUNDER in a new version with a lot of bonus tracks, don’t forget to buy it. Now I have a question for you, he said, how many of you here tonight are seeing us live for the first time? When some fans shouted yes, he asked the question again, how many of you have seen us live before? Then almost everyone in the club shouted yes. Well then let us teach the new ones here tonight what you say when I say Let The Hammer…and everyone shouted FALL. This was done a few times until it was time for the song “Let The Hammer Fall”. The ecstatic crowd took over the lead vocals as well as the chorus and the members smiled as they heard the screams. The band felt solid as a rock on stage and everyone did a great job of complementing each other on stage. Cans is a great frontman, but I never liked his lead vocals. To me his voice sounds a bit thin. I wanted a singer with a deeper and darker voice to sing the songs. And just like Accept or Judas Priest, all the members gathered on the center stage to wave their guitars in sync.

Cans and Norgren stayed on stage while Dronjak and Larsson left and together they started “Glory To The Brave”. Cans let the fans do the singing and Dronjak and Larsson rejoined the band in the middle of the song. The song ended as it started, with only Cans on vocals and Norgren on guitar. “Hector’s Hymn” continued the show and the song, taken from 2014’s (R)EVOLUTION, raised the roof. “Dominion” followed and then it was time for Cans to introduce the band members. “(We Make) Sweden Rock” finished the original part of the show and the song was just another crowd pleaser from the Hammerfall camp. It felt like one of the more anticipated songs and it was the perfect way to end the 1 hour 15 minute show.

However, the fans weren’t satisfied and started screaming for encores as soon as the members left the stage.

Shortly after, the members came back on stage with cans and asked if the fans wanted to hear more music. Well, let’s try “Hammer High” for you. Malmo, let’s keep the party going with “No Son Of Odin”, Cans said. The song from the new album calmed down the crowd who wanted to hear more of the band’s classic tunes. Cans thanked the fans and the club again, I hope to see you again in Malmö. We’ll leave you with “Hears On Fire” and this song was the perfect farewell song. Everyone in the club went crazy and the sing-a-long was deafening. The song is one of the band’s all time hits and was the one song everyone seemed to be waiting to hear. In the middle of the song Cans jumped into the photo pit and he and the fans did a long sing-along together.

The song ended with Cans coming back on stage and together the band finished the song and the show. The outro was played over the speakers and the members took their instruments and said goodbye to the fans.

What to say about the 90 minute power melodic heavy metal show, the band gave their absolute best on stage and I don’t think any of the fans were disappointed when they left the club. All the members are extremely skilled musicians, which they certainly proved that night. Even though Cans is a great frontman who connects with the fans, I can’t get around the fact that his voice sounds a bit like he thinks he’s singing this music. He is the weak point of the band. The setlist was varied and even though the fans didn’t feel the new songs, I thought it was great to hear that the band had the courage to include more current songs in the setlist.

The most boring thing about the band is that most of their songs sound a bit alike. But Hammerfall have found their niche and stayed true to it for many decades now and it’s obviously a working niche. They are one of the biggest bands in their genre, so I guess they found their thing.

Helloween Announce 2023 North American Tour

HammerFall will provide support on the three-week run

Helloween have announced a 2023 North American tour with support from fellow power metallers HammerFall .

The run kicks off May 13th in Dallas and wraps up on June 3rd in San Francisco, hitting most major markets along the way.

Ticket sales are ongoing and can be purchased via Ticketmaster . If you’re looking for potential deals or to snag tickets once they’re sold out, you can also find them at StubHub , where orders are 100% guaranteed through Stubhub’s FanProtect program.

The tour will see Helloween performing tracks from their eponymous 2021 album for the first time on North American shores. Meanwhile, HammerFall will be out in support of their 2022 effort, Hammer of Dawn .

HELLOWEEN Announces Spring 2023 North American Tour With HAMMERFALL

German power metallers HELLOWEEN will embark on the "United Forces" tour of North America in May 2023. Support on the 13-date trek will come from Swedish metallers HAMMERFALL . Tickets will go on sale on Friday, September 30 at 10 a.m. local time.

HELLOWEEN singer Andi Deris comments: "We can't wait to be back and celebrate our new album with our fans in the U.S. and Canada!"

HAMMERFALL says: " HAMMERFALL will accompany HELLOWEEN on their North American tour next year! The highly successful 'United Forces' tour will continue across the ocean in May and June, serving as the perfect prelude to the summer. You asked for it so here we go!"

June 2021 saw the release of HELLOWEEN 's self-titled studio album. Adored by fans and critics alike, the record catapulted straight to the charts, earning the No. 1 position in Germany and Spain, the Top 5 of seven countries, and the Top 15 multiple times worldwide.

The cover artwork for "Helloween" was painted by artist Eliran Kantor , who has previously worked with HATEBREED , SOULFLY , TESTAMENT , ICED EARTH and SODOM , among others.

The "Pumpkins United" lineup features returning singer Michael Kiske and guitarist/vocalist Kai Hansen alongside frontman Andi Deris , guitarists Michael Weikath and Sascha Gerstner , bassist Markus Grosskopf and drummer Daniel Löble .

Produced by Charlie Bauerfeind and Dennis Ward , the new HELLOWEEN LP was recorded in part at the H.O.M.E. Studios in Hamburg (where everything started in 1984). The same recording console used for such HELLOWEEN albums as "Master Of The Rings" , "Time Of The Oath" and "Better Than Raw" was utilized to record the band's new material. The effort was mixed at the Valhalla Studios of Ronald Prent ( IRON MAIDEN , DEF LEPPARD , RAMMSTEIN ).

HELLOWEEN 's new album saw the legendary German power metallers going "back to the roots," with the band recording fully analogue and Löble playing the drum kit previously used by HELLOWEEN 's original drummer, the late Ingo Schwichtenberg , on the legendary "Keeper Of The Seven Keys" recordings.

The "Pumpkins United" tour marked the first time Kiske had played live with HELLOWEEN since 1993. Hansen , who departed HELLOWEEN in 1988, had been joining the band onstage on various tours and festival appearances throughout the years. The set featured several duets with Kiske and his replacement, Deris , along with many rarely played songs, including "Kids Of The Century" , "Rise And Fall" and "Livin' Ain't No Crime" . Hansen — who fronted HELLOWEEN until late 1986 — sang a medley of several early HELLOWEEN classics, including "Ride The Sky" , "Judas" , "Starlight" and "Heavy Metal (Is The Law)" .

HAMMERFALL 's latest studio album, "Hammer Of Dawn" , was released in February via Napalm Records . The LP was produced by longtime collaborator Fredrik Nordström ( IN FLAMES , OPETH ),who handled mixing, mastering, drum recording, and shared the duty of recording guitars and bass with guitarists Pontus Norgren and Oscar Dronjak . Jacob Hansen ( VOLBEAT ) produced the lead vocals.

As one of the main forces in heavy metal, HAMMERFALL have dominated not only the Swedish album charts, but album charts across Europe throughout their extensive career, while earning gold status thrice. Faced with the daunting task of following up the band's last studio album, "Dominion" , an album that fans and critics hailed as one of the band's strongest releases, HAMMERFALL collectively met the challenge head on and have delivered what many early listeners are predicting as the best metal album of 2022 and a high point of the band's catalog.

Singer Joacim Cans stated about the new album: "It's hard to describe in words how extremely happy and proud I am about the outcome of 'Hammer Of Dawn' . It was a struggle, for sure, but in the end we pulled it off and delivered a solid, vital and positive new album. Everyone is on top of his game and together we have created yet another milestone in HAMMERFALL history."

Dronjak added: "We spent a long time creating the songs for this album, mainly due to the coronavirus but also because we began working on the material very early. That's definitely evident in the result, the attention to detail is very big. Another thing that is quite palpable is the energy level, and that can be contributed to the extreme and forced downtime we all had to endure during the pandemic. The atmosphere in the studio was relaxed and laid back and the lack of stress created the perfect working environment for turning up the heat when the red light came on. It was easy to peak when you had to since there was no outside distractions or immediate deadlines. This album is a product of the pandemic in some ways, but more importantly it's a strong statement that we are experiencing the high point in our creativity at the moment. I've said it before: HAMMERFALL has never sounded better than we do right now."

Helloween Announce 2023 North American Tour With HammerFall

Power metal legends Helloween will be returning to North America in 2023, on tour with special guest HammerFall .

They last visited the U.S. and Canada prior to release last year's self-titled album, debuting the lineup that now features classic members Michael Kiske (vocals) and Kai Hansen (guitar vocals), both of whom rejoined in 2017.

With three distinct eras of the band now performing as one, it's hard to argue there has ever been a better time to be a Helloween fan than these last few years, especially after their remarkably strong 2021 album, which they're now supporting on the road.

"We are very delighted and enchanted to tell you that we're coming to the U.S. and Canada pretty soon, actually. We expect you to be there and rock with us," says Hansen in a video promo for the upcoming run. "You're going to be there otherwise you're in big trouble," adds bassist Markus Grosskopf, "I expect you there!"

Joining Helloween will be Sweden's HammerFall, who also served as their guest on a recent European tour. They'll be touting their latest album,  Hammer of Dawn , which came out in February.

The 13-date trek will stretch from May 13 through June 3 and you can view the complete list of stops further down the page. Tickets will go on sale on Sept. 30 at 10AM local time and you can find more ticketing information at Helloween's website .
