Cultural experiences

Fundamental to understanding Australia as a whole is an appreciation of first nations culture, its history and relation to country. Intercultural exchanges with First Nation communities are one way we seek to inspire this.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time of year to go on a walking trip in australia.

Determining what time of year is the best time to embark on a walking trip in Australia largely depends on which state you're in and where you're planning to walk. If you're planning a trip to the Northern Territory, it's advised that you don't travel during the summer season (December, January, and February) as it's cyclone season and this can lead to unpredictable weather patterns and unsafe walking conditions. This is the same for Queensland, especially in the far north. Any other state is suitable to visit all year round.

What to pack for a walking trip in Australia

What to pack for a walking trip can depend on how difficult the walk that you plan to do is but generally it's a good idea to make sure you have the below items:

Backpack/day bag

Comfortable walking shoes

Retractable walking poles

Reusable drink bottle

What are the best walks in Australia?

There are many outstanding walks throughout the entirety of Australia so regardless of which state you visit, you're sure to find a walk that suits your fitness level and appetite for breathtaking views. Here are some of our favourites:

Larapinta Trail, Northern Territory

Cradle Mountain Overland Track, Tasmania

The Great Ocean Road, Victoria

Kakadu National Park, Northern Territory

Blue Mountains, New South Wales

Cape to Cape Track, Western Australia

Flinders Ranges, South Australia

Scenic Rim, Queensland

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Doing the larapinta solo is quiet a hike and doesn’t disappoint The staff were excellent from booking from drop off at the start of the hike to pickup at the end, couldn’t ask for better service thank you.

The tour leaders made this walk very rewarding. Both Sarah and Brendon went above and beyond to help the team on the walk and catered for all our needs after the walks. Brendon was very knowledgeable with many interesting dreamtime stories and other tales.

John Dohnt Corlette, NSW 12 Jul 2022

Description of trip says moderate to challenging. Please remove moderate. I was the fittest strongest person on the trip which was a help to the guides who did an awesome job with guests who shouldn’t have even been there. So far l reckon u have been lucky without any real health and safety issues . I realise it would reduce guests if u stuck to your guildlines for fitness levels but u do for sth coast track.

Andre Farley Castlemaine, VIC 25 Mar 2023

The guides were amazing. Very knowledgeable and interesting. Great food.

Joan Muddyman Mansfield, VIC 14 Jul 2021

Australia's 24 best walking holidays

30 October 2023

Time

Allow us to walk you through Australia’s most iconic multi-day nature treks: these 24 adventure escapes take in the most remote regions in Australia.

1. heysen trail, sa.

Length: 1200km over 60 days (or one obsessed lifetime).

The Heysen Trail is more than a ramble – it’s a lifestyle. The rock star of Australian walks starts in the ancient and mesmerising Flinders Ranges – Parachilna Gorge to be exact – and finishes at Cape Jervis, but only the crazy would walk its entire length in one attempt. No other trail meanders through such lovely countryside – including five wine regions. From the Outback to the surf coast, this is the best in South Australia.

Can you do it yourself?

Yes, but visit your doctor first. See the Friends of the Heysen Trail website .

Guided hikes

Several operators cover sections of the walk, particularly in the Flinders Ranges.

At the very top end, the luxurious Arkaba Walk spends three night and four days meandering through Wilpena Pound and is all-inclusive with meals and accommodation.

If you’re more of a money-cruncher, the five day Park Trek walk through the Flinders Ranges is standing a little bit cheaper.

2. Jatbula Trail, NT

Length: 58km over five days.

This trail plays to all of the NT’s strengths – lush rainforests, spectacular waterfalls and calming, mystical (croc-free!) waterholes. The trail is divided into five sections starting from the Nitmiluk Visitor Centre 30km from Katherine and ending at Leliyn (Edith Falls). With just five fairly leisurely days of six to eight hours’ walking in the utterly beautiful Nitmiluk National Park (Katherine Gorge) , we vote it Australia’s “most likely to be huge in two years” trail – so make it a priority now and have it (almost) to yourself.

Yes, but you will need a load of supplies. There are many natural springs along the way for freshwater. For info, go to the NT website.

Gecko Canoeing & Trekking Tours run a four-night, five-day Jatbula walk with a fully inclusive package and entirely guided.

Otherwise, Trek Tours Australia run a walking tour throughout the trail for six days, complete with all meals and snacks catered and two professional guides to help you.

3. Giles Track, NT

Length: 22km over two days.

The Giles Track is a great “starter” track for outback walking because it involves just one overnight sleep-out (the annoyingly fit can even do the entire 22km in just one day).

The walk starts with a 1km section of the Kings Canyon Rim Walk before heading out on the Giles Track for another 7km to the Reedy Creek campsite. The first day is a challenging climb through spectacular weathered sandstone domes to the awesome Watarrka lookout and down again to the campsite at Reedy Creek. The second day is a 14km trek across a series of creeks to the final destination, Kathleen Springs.

Yes, but make sure you take your own supplies and avoid doing the challenging walk in the height of summer. Plan your trek at the NT website.

Trek Larapinta tour group does a five-day Mt Giles Explorer Trek. Walkthrough Mt Giles as well as Ormiston Gorge (roughly 42 kilometres in total). If you’re feeling extra prepared, this is the one to book.

4. The Tabletop Track, NT

Length:  39km over three days (for the superhuman) or five days (for everyone else).

The Tabletop Track rambles through the best of Litchfield National Park . The actual walk is a circuit so you can reach it via a connecting track from one of the many lovely waterholes that Litchfield is famous for (and that are hence also popular with busloads of tourists).

After each day’s walk you can follow these linking tracks to the popular campsite for a soak and to camp out with the hordes. Alternatively, there are a number of campsites that are accessed only via the Tabletop Track, such as Tjena Falls. The entire walk takes in well-known highlights such as Wangi Falls, Florence Falls and Walker Creek, with secluded wanderings through savannah, pandanas and secluded oases.

Yes, but make sure you take plenty of supplies and be prepared to rough it. Plan it at the NT website.

Not available.

5. The Larapinta Trail, NT

Length: 223km over 13 days.

The Larapinta Trail stretches along the spine of the West MacDonnell Ranges, from the Old Telegraph Station in Alice Springs to its highest point and trail end at Mt Sonder, via some of the most spectacular landscapes in Australia. Climb to astonishing lookouts then descend into serene gorges and waterholes.

The trail is divided into 12 stages, most taking a day to complete. Go in late autumn when both day and night temperatures are at their mildest.

You can do this trek yourself, but get organised. If attempting the whole trail without assistance then you must organise food and water drops. Check out the very helpful Larapinta Trail website for trail maps and more info.

World Expeditions runs five-night camping trips or nine-day treks, both are all-inclusive, meals, tents etc. And the aptly named Trek Larapinta runs a five-night trek or a 16-day end-to-end trip with hotel pickups, professional wilderness guides and all camping equipment.

Set out on a multi-day outback hike

The weird and wonderful Larapinta.

6. Fraser Island Great Walk, QLD

Length:  90km over eight days.

The walk starts at Dili village on the east coast of K’gari Fraser Island . From here, the trail heads inland through lush rainforest, open woodlands, vine forests and kauri pines. The trail is a mix of old logging roads and trails, and it skips from one photogenic site to another.

You can visit the island’s famously gorgeous freshwater lakes, such as Mackenzie, Wanggoolba and Wabby, where you can refill water bottles, soothe weary legs and/or camp for the evening. Queensland National Parks maintain eight campsites on the trek.

Yes, but make sure you book the campsites, carry enough supplies and purchase a topographical map. Best research for this trek is via Queensland National Parks.

The folks at Fraser Island Hiking offers guided and self-guided walks. Go pack-free (only guided) while they carry your bags (ahh relief), and discover the beauty that is Fraser.

K'gari Fraser Island.

The walk takes in the east coast of K’gari Fraser Island.

7. The Thorsborne Trail, QLD

Length: 32km over four days.

Another pristine island walk, the Thorsborne Trail takes the eastern coastal route on Hinchinbrook Island, off the coast of Cardwell, which is exactly halfway between Cairns and Townsville . The trek follows the coast and includes several creek crossings to make it more adventurous.

Green sea turtles and dugongs feed in the sea offshore and are often spotted during an afternoon swim, particularly around Nina Bay. Less welcome fauna is the native giant white-tailed rat, which can be a pest if you don’t secure your food at night.

The trail is highly protected – only 40 permits are granted at a time for walkers, to minimise the environmental impact. There are several campsites to choose from, each with facilities such as a composting toilet and freshwater creek to refill your water bottle, but campfires are not allowed.

Yes, but you need to bring all supplies and get in early as it books out quickly in peak periods. Check out more at the website.

The Thorsborne Trail

Queensland comes alive.

8. Scenic Rim Walk, QLD

Length: Depending on how you carry your tiara, this eco-luxury walking experience lasts up to four indulgent days.

Those who like a little comfort at the end of the day and a lighter load on the trail will love this gentle guided walk, where all the hassles are attended to by someone else – all you have to carry is your lunch and water. There is no single track but rather a series of 5-10km day walks around south-east Queensland’s beautiful Scenic Rim.

On day one you walk through a section of the World Heritage-listed Gondwana Rainforests of Australia before entering the Spicers Peak Nature Reserve. For two evenings you settle into the permanent camp at Spicers Canopy, and for the final evening, you get to indulge in the luxury of Spicers Peak Lodge, topping your experience off with a seven-course degustation dinner.

No. This is a private trail and company (see below).

The two-day pampered walking tour will provide you with alcoholic beverages, return transfers and hiking equipment. The six-day hike offers the same, but you get to stay in comfy and cosy cabins throughout your stay.

9. The Six Foot Track, NSW

Length: 45km over three days (or one if you’re a marathon runner).

Australia’s quintessential multi-day track follows an old bridle trail through the Megalong Valley from Katoomba to the Jenolan Caves. The landscape is classic Blue Mountains – sheer sandstone cliff faces and escarpments with awe-inspiring vistas of valleys, fern glens, river crossings over suspended bridges… with a soundtrack of whip birds. Campsites are numerous and well-marked.

Yes. Check out the National Parks guide on the track.

Life’s An Adventure offers a “luxury” hiking experience where guides carry your bags and cook your dinner for you, talk about being pampered.

Don’t miss our guide to the best Blue Mountains walks .

The Six Foot track

The Six Foot track winds through Blue Mountains National Park and state forests.

10. Budawangs Circuit, NSW

The Budawangs are a hidden gem: pockets of rainforest interspersed with windswept brush and thickets, stands of eucalyptus and towering sandstone cliffs. The Budawangs Circuit is tucked into the western escarpment of the Morton National Park, inland from Jervis Bay . The trek usually begins at Long Gully.

The second day tackles the highest point of the trek, which also passes through tunnels and along scraggy cliffs. For those with a fear of heights or bung knees it’s challenging, but once you reach the magnificent Castle the feeling of achievement is huge. The stunning views will make you forget your burning quads.

Yes. Bring a day pack so you can leave the heavy pack at the campsite for the walk up The Castle and back. Because it’s a wilderness area (whatever that means) National Parks doesn’t promote the walk, so the best place to find more information is through bushwalking forums. For information from National Parks, go to the website.

Budawang National Park

Budawang National Park is declared a wilderness area.

11. Yuraygir Coastal Walk, NSW

Length: 65km over four days (DIY) or six days (guided).

Winding along the most pristine coast in northern NSW, this is the state’s answer to Tassie’s Bay of Fires or WA’s Cape to Cape Walk. The best way to do the walk (aka the Solitary Bay Walk) is to head in from Angourie (just south of Yamba ) in the north then make your way to Wooli. You’ll traverse beautiful beaches and freshwater creeks and lakes.

Comfort-seeking trekkers will love that the trail has been measured out so that each day ends at a town (with a beach) so you can resupply, refresh with a swim and sleep in a comfy bed. Though you can always go hardcore and camp in the national park on the outskirts of town.

Yes, check out the National Parks website.

Local operator, Yuragir Walks offer logistical and transport assistance.

Yuraygir coastal walk on the Clarence Coast.

Hike the multi-day Yuraygir coastal walk on the Clarence Coast.

12. Gibraltar-Washpool World Heritage Walk, NSW

Length: 40km over five days, or 80km with side trips.

This, the greatest multi-day walk in NSW, showcases the beautiful New England Tableland near Glen Innes. Most walkers start the 40km loop at Mulligans campsite in the Gibraltar National Park. The trek is characterised by the huge variety in the landscape. From dry eucalyptus forests and granite outcrops to lush, wet rainforests with dramatic waterfalls, it has it all – including the world’s largest stand of coachwood trees.

There are designated campsites and bush-camping areas next to creeks, but freshwater supplies need to be filtered, boiled or sterilised. The best time to head out would be mid-spring when the temperature is perfect for a walk and the wildflowers are in full show.

Yes. The NSW National Parks site is difficult to navigate so try Map My Walk to visualise the trail.

13. Australian Alps Walking Track, NSW/VIC/ACT

Length: 650km over 60 days.

The ascents and descents are the equivalents of scaling Everest three times, so most sane walkers tackle only a few stretches at a time. It is relatively well marked, but you’ll need a good map and compass. It offers windswept plains, beautiful snow gum glades, wildflowers in spring and pioneers’ mountain huts.

Yes, but plan, plan, plan.

Lake Crackenback Resort & Spa allows guests to choose between 2 hours/half day/full day Alpine walks. Grab a shuttle bus from the resort to and from the trailheads and sit down to a gourmet picnic lunch to refuel.

Auswalk brings it up to a seven-day walk through the high peaks of Kosciuszko National Park. Stay at comfortable ensuite accommodation and enjoy a freshly cooked breakfast each morning.

The Australian Alps Walking Track

The Australian Alps Walking Track (AAWT) is made for us mountain lovers.

14. Croajingolong Wilderness Walk, VIC

Length: 45km over four days.

From Thurra River, north-east of the lighthouse at Point Hicks (Cook’s first sight of Australia in 1770), this walk follows the spectacular Croajingolong National Park coast in Gippsland and traverses very wild and remote terrain before ending at Shipwreck Creek. It is not a walk for the novice, with extended day walks and rough-and-ready tracks.

This is the wild and woolly version of a walk along the beach. The entire Wilderness Coast Walk is substantially longer than this leg (100km from Sydenham Inlet in Victoria to Wonboyn in NSW); however, this is the most spectacular section and will give you a good idea of whether you want to attempt the entire 100km.

Definitely, but bring your own supplies.

Operated by Gippsland High Country Tours, this Croajingolong National Park Tour takes up seven days. You’ll be hiking through Point Hicks, Gipsy Point and Mallacoota.

If you are exploring Gippsland, you may also want our guide to Wilsons Prom .

15. The Wallaby Track, VIC

Length: 90km over six days.

The Wallaby Track around the Macedon Ranges is, in fact, a subsection of the Goldfields Track, which in itself is a subsection of the Great Dividing Trail. The walk traditionally starts on a high at Mt Buninyong, where a lookout tower gives great 360-degree views of the landscape. The closer you get to the end, the better the walking.

Historic goldfields relics are everywhere, as are old waterways that fed sluicing machines, where the occasional prospector is still trying their luck. Also en route is the slab-and-bark hut of federation unionist W.G. Spence. Ending the trail in Daylesford is a great thing – take in the healing mineral waters of Hepburn Springs to recover.

Yes, it is easily done as a series of day walks. Sections two and three do not have any designated campsites. The best information can be found on the Goldfields Track official website.

16. The Great Ocean Walk, VIC

Length: 104km over eight days.

Its advantage over Australia’s greatest drive is that when the Great Ocean Road heads inland, the trail hugs the pristine coast. You can experience it in numerous ways, from a one-day walk upwards. The campsites are great, but some of the guided tours will drive you to a comfy bed at the end of each day.

Yes, but campers should book via Parks Victoria.

Aus Walking Co. has its own custom-designed lodge for walkers, complete with a firepit and terracotta bowls for soaking weary feet. Choose between the four-day moderate walk or the three days easier option. The luxury accommodation holds rainforest showers, a library and is entirely sustainable.

Auswalk’s seven-night walk includes a night’s stay in the lighthouse keeper’s cottage at Cape Otway.

For more check out our guide to the Great Ocean Road walk .

adventure australia treks & tours

This once-in-a-lifetime hike will take you eight days.

17. Kidman Trail, SA

Length: 260km over 18 hours on a horse – way longer on two feet.

The Kidman Trail (not to be confused with NSW outback 4WD trail the Kidman Way) is a multi-use track shared by horses, trekkers and mountain bikers. Starting at the northern tip of the Barossa at Kapunda, the trail meanders around Adelaide via the Adelaide Hills wine region, and on to the heart of another wine region, McLaren Vale.

The section of the trail through the Adelaide Hills is perhaps the closest experience to an old English ramble that you can have in Australia. The beauty of passing through this populated area is that a refreshing pub is never too far away – as is a comfy B&B.

Yes. Go to the South Australian Trails for maps and, even more handily, a list of towns, accommodation and pubs on the trail.

18. Yurrebilla Trail, SA

Length: 54km over three days or 5.25 hours for marathon runners.

This shares 12km with the Kidman Trail. From north to south (though most walk the opposite way), it starts at Ambers Gully and traverses plains with views of the city and sea, eucalypt forests, waterfalls, deep gullies, and the odd orchard and vineyard before it ends at Belair train station.

Easily. There are one day and four half-day sections. Find accommodation in the Hills or at one of many campsites.

Guided hike

19. cape to cape, wa.

Length:  135km over seven days.

Stroll along the stunning coastline from Cape Naturaliste in the north to Cape Leeuwin in the south, traversing the Margaret River wine region: you can walk, taste wines, swim it all off and start again. The beaches are fabulous and there are plenty of campsites.

Yes. Join the Friends of the Cape to Cape Track for extra information.

Inspiration Outdoors runs both eight-day and five-day guided tours for the Cape to Cape track. Stay in the same comfy lodge every night and get driven to the trail each day.

Cape to Cape Tours has a heap of options in regards to this track. With a three-day glamping session, a four-day deluxe explorer trail, and either the eight-day end-to-end session (choose from classic, ultimate and base camp).

Cape to Cape Track.

Walk along the iconic Cape to Cape Track.

20. Bibbulmun Track, WA

Length: 961km over 54 days without a blister.

The granddaddy of WA’s walks has by far the best facilities for a long-distance trek. At every day’s end is either a township or a three-sided wooden shelter for campers, complete with fresh water, bunks and cooking facilities.

From Kalamanda, the track runs south to Albany, mostly through beautiful jarrah and karri forests; the last section skirts the coast. The best time to walk is early spring, when the wildflowers are spectacular.

Yes, but join the Friends of Bibbulmun Track Foundation for info, maps and a free advisory service.

Inspiration Outdoors runs an eight-night Walpole to Denmark tour and a six-night Albany to Denmark tour. Walkers stay in the same lodge every night and are driven to the trail daily.

World Expeditions hosts both the Albany to Denmark and Walpole to Denmark tours as well.

21. Overland Track, TAS

Length: 65km over six days.

It’s the country’s superstar trek; one that everyone wants to do. With such popularity, the trail is strictly managed so you have to book your walk and pay a track fee to National Parks Tasmania. You also have to walk it in one direction – from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair. This World Heritage area is stunning and encompasses many of the highest peaks in Tasmania. No one returns unchanged.

Definitely, but the weather is variable (even in walking season, Nov 1-Apr 30). Check out the National Parks site for advice.

You’ve got loads of choices.

Cradle Mountain Huts is the first-class walking experience, with exclusive access to the very comfy and spectacular huts along the route, and guides who cook unbelievably good meals.

Wilderness Expeditions has year-round tours (you carry snowshoes in winter). With six nights in total and spending five of those nights camping.

For more read our review of the Overland Track .

The Overland Track winds through Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park

The Overland Track winds through Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park

22. Bay of Fires, TAS

Length:  23km over four days.

This is the most leisurely and indulgent way to experience Tasmania’s beautiful natural environment. The Bay of Fires walk is a private tour that officially starts at pick-up at Launceston but actually kicks off at Boulder Point in the Mount William National Park, on the north-east coast.

Of the three nights, the first is spent in a semi-permanent camp at Forester Beach, while the other two are at the stunning Bay of Fires Lodge. The coastal walk is only 23km long but traverses pristine white sandy beaches, rocks rusty with lichen and coastal scrubland. In total there are two days of walking and one day of leisure when most participants go for a morning kayak before returning to Launceston.

Parts of it, but not with the same level of pampering. Only Bay of Fires walkers can stay in the camp at Forester Beach, but there are other camping and caravan sites.

Tas Walking Co. offers a three-night experience, walking from Launceston to Mt William National Park, the Bay of Fires and a kayak session on the last day.

adventure australia treks & tours

Walking Tasmania’s iconic Bay of Fires.

23. Maria Island, TAS

Length: 42km over four days

Maria Island is a sliver of land off Tasmania’s east coast. It has a chequered history, but today is a national park without a single permanent resident, so walkers have it to themselves.

The most comfortable experience is the award-winning guided walk, which begins on the pristine beaches of the southern end before exploring the rare cloud rainforests of Mount Maria in the north. You stay two nights in permanent tents, while the final night is spent in heritage-listed Bernacchi Homestead.

Yes, but there are no shops and only basic facilities, so come prepared. Check out the Tasmanian Parks & Wildlife website for information.

Maria Island Walks operate from mid-October to the end of April. A three-night tour includes transport from Hobart and meals.

Maria Island

Maria Island is a special place with something for everyone.

 24. Port Davey Track, TAS

Length: 70km over five days

Of all the walks in these pages, this is the most remote. It starts at Scots Peak Road and ends at Melaleuca, which has no road access, so either continue walking the South Coast Track for another six days or arrange a boat or flight out. The weather is more variable than anywhere else in Tasmania as the Antarctic winds howl.

But this is the most primitive landscape you may ever see, which makes the track one of the most-wanted by serious walkers.

Yes, but take loads of gear and supplies. If the weather turns, supply flights into Melaleuca are cancelled. Make sure you thoroughly read the notes at the Parks Tasmania website before even considering this.

Tasmanian Expeditions’ 16-day tour includes both the Port Davey and South Coast Track.

If you’re keen on even more hiking (and maybe biking) holidays. Head to our page to help you figure out the best plot for you.

Looks like a great list of walks – most of which I haven’t done! Just wanted to point out that while the Bibbulmun Track in WA is very well set up, the campsites don’t really have cooking facilities. You can have a fire at about 2/3 of the campsites at certain times of the year though. Oh and Inspiration Outdoors now runs many accommodated tours on the track – multiple sections and a ‘best of’ that takes in parts of the Cape to Cape Track and the Bibbulmun Track. Cheers.

Wow! Great article. You’ve just filled up my entire retirement years ahead with amazing walks in our beautiful country.

[email protected] What a fabulous overview of Australia’s amazing walks. I, and my walking pals, are very grateful. More than a bucket list, this is a billabong list. Thank you. XOX

Trekking through vast open savannah country we explore the ancient stone country where Jawoyn Aboriginal art sites are hidden in many of the spectacular rocky outcrops and overhangs. Crystal Falls is our campsite tonight, a truly stunning location blessed with deep crystal clear pools, surrounded by lush monsoon forest. Amazing, beautiful, stunning, incredible, these words don’t even go close to describing the place we camp tonight – another delicious meal, a moonlight swim, and a deep sleep under the stars. This is Jatbula Trail living at its best.

11kms | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3: WALK FROM CRYSTAL FALLS TO AMPHITHEATRE THEN ON TO 17 MILE FALLS

Walking out of camp we climb to an elevated position above Crystal Falls, giving us a birds eye view of this spectacular waterfall cascading over the escarpment. Continuing our trek today we discover an incredible natural amphitheatre tucked away in a monsoonal rain forest setting. Descending into this magical place we explore the rocky overhangs and nooks to find incredible Jawoyn rock art. ‘The Amphitheatre’, as it is called, provides some of the most magnificent recorded indigenous art in this region. After lunch our walk takes us along the edge of the Jatbula Trail escarpment, culminating in the breathtaking vistas of our camp tonight – 17 Mile Falls.

10kms | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4: WALK FROM 17 MILE FALLS TO SANDY CAMP POOL

Our biggest day on the trail takes us into the Edith River catchment. Trekking through Pandanus groves and lush grasses we follow the course of the river to Channels Waterhole. A shady, sandy, cool oasis awaits, providing us with a perfect lunch stop and of course a midday swim in the Edith River. Continuing our walk today through lush green wetlands we have time to watch the prolific birdlife and maybe even spot a buffalo. Camp tonight is Sandy Camp Pool a picturesque billabong of Olympic proportions; it overflows with water lilies and is surrounded by towering paperbarks. As the name suggests we enjoy a wonderful sandy camp giving us another comfortable sleep under the stars, beside one of our favourite billabongs on the Jatbula Trail.

17kms | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5: WALK FROM SANDY CAMP TO SWEETWATER POOL

A morning swim and relaxed breakfast sees us in great shape to begin our trek to Sweetwater Pool. Walking alongside the Edith River with its many billabongs and waterholes, today is a wonderful opportunity to see some of the top ends shyest wildlife – perhaps a turtle, some Brolgas or maybe even a Water Monitor. A delicious lunch at camp is followed by a leisurely afternoon, swimming and exploring these gorgeous pools. Our last dinner together is a special event and a chance for us to share memories and some of the highlights experienced on our Jatbula Trail adventure.

11.2kms | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6: WALK FROM SWEETWATER POOL TO LELIYN (EDITH FALLS), DRIVE TO DARWIN

A morning trek along the Edith River and its numerous waterfalls brings us to the end of the Jatbula Trail and our incredible journey together. Arriving at Leilyn (Edith Falls) we have the opportunity for a last swim of the tour in one of the top ends favourite swimming holes. Driving back to Darwin, we stop at the historic Adelaide River Inn for a superb lunch and experience a unique slice of top end food and hospitality. We aim to arrive back in Darwin by 5pm.

4.5kms | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

Testimonials

I’ve been on several treks with Trek - the Bungles, Jatbula and Kakadu. You’ll get to see some stunning places that very few people get to see. A great company with knowledgeable guides. You need to be fit - but get ready for the best adventure ever!

Simon TripAdvisor August 2022

Our experience of the Jatbula trail left us in awe of the ancient land we traversed, Jawoyn Country, Nitmiluk National Park. Our guides Johnny and Malla led us over stunning landscapes, showed us Indigenous rock art and encouraged us to connect with the land as we walked. Beautiful campsites with equally beautiful waterholes by lunch with time to chill, what more could you ask for! Thanks guys for supporting us, feeding us fantastic food and for being fun! Our fellow trekkers were wonderful company too. What a blast we had. I can highly recommend Trek Tours Jatbula.

Lisa TripAdvisor July 2022

We had an amazing, life changing experience walking the Jatbula Trail. The scenery, rock art, flora, fauna, campsites, waterholes & escarpments were all out of this world. We were in awe of our guides, Declan & Lani who had amazing knowledge and supported us intuitively, our experience would have been way less without them! Their cooking was pretty good too! I could go on, but suffice to say, it was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had & I’m full of gratitude for our wonderful guides!

Lisa K TripAdvisor May 2022

We knew it was going to be a nice walk before the start as our friends had done the walk last year and raved about it. But we didn't expect it to be quite such an incredibly beautiful and spiritual journey that we will forever hold close to our hearts. Sure it was tough at times, mostly due to the unexpected heat and consequent blisters, aching knees, heat rash and infected mosquito bites. But that is already forgotten and all we remember now is the beauty and the magic of Jatbula. Our guides Nick and Hayley made our adventure extra special and we can not thank them enough for their high spirits and extra care. You guys rock.

Additional Info

Grade 4: Bushwalking experience recommended. Tracks may be long, rough and very steep. Directional signage may be limited.

Trek Tours Australia’s 6 day Jatbula Trail Adventure is a demanding walk, we advise you to do as much training as you can before your trek with us. The more you train prior to this adventure the easier you will handle the terrain and the more you will enjoy this wonderful part of the world. The Jatbula Trail is located in Nitmiluk National Park, east of Katherine in the tropical, hot and humid Top End of Australia (this can still be the case even in the winter walking months).

As most of our guests are travelling from significantly cooler and less humid parts of Australia, the Top End walking weather can be a challenge. We recommend being well hydrated before embarking on the days walk. This includes being well hydrated the day before your hike departure and importantly taking on water regularly on the vehicle transfer to the trail-head and during the hike.

It’s also important to come along with an open mind ready for an awesome experience whatever the weather, whoever the group. It is very important that you bring the right gear for the conditions. A comprehensive gear list is included at the end of this brochure. Quality backpacks are also available for hire. If you are at all concerned about your ability to complete this walk, please feel free to call one of us here at Trek Tours Australia for more advice (1300 133 278).

Testimonials

Greg, our leader was just great! Highly organised, as we’d come to expect from being our Car Club President for some 8 years. Provided excellent insight into the history of the Kokoda campaign throughout the trek, very emotional it was too.

Our leader, Russell was fantastic. His love for the trail, the history, and helping people experience the best of Kokoda, is evident in the way he leads.

My experience completing the Kokoda trek with Getaway trekking was honestly amazing! The trek leader and PNG boys who assisted with the trek were all so welcoming and friendly and made it a thoroughly enjoyable trip with zero worries.

Absolutely amazing. Outstanding understanding of the history of the track and the individual battle stories. The porters were absolute fuzzy wuzzy angels and the group of 20 amazing people on the trek were awesome. The friendships made are forever lasting and the experiences will stick with me forever. Highly recommend Getaway

Canning Stock Route Experience, North to South. Alice to Uluru. 24 Nights

• 3 june - 26 jun 2025 (fully booked - taking names for possible 2nd tour) $7822 for 1 or 2 people in one vehicle..

"This tour is not a holiday, it's an experience" The Canning is the longest continuous 4WD track in the World, and a bucket list item for many adventurous travellers. In addition to pitting yourself and your vehicle against the harshness of the track and the environment, the historic component, both European and Indigenous, is fascinating. During this tour, you'll spend a total of 17 days on the actual Canning Stock Route, plenty of time to really enjoy being in the desert. You'll camp among the sand dunes, near historic wells, and under the shade of desert oaks and bloodwood trees. In addition to the stunning desert landscape, you'll also have the opportunity to see unique desert wildlife and plants and learn that there's much more to the desert than just sand. This tour starts at the Crowne Plaza Lasseters Hotel in Alice Springs with an included hotel room and dinner at the restaurant, and ends in Uluru/Ayres Rock with a complimentary Uluru 3 day pass and a final breakfast.  Some remote off-road experience is desirable as the track is VERY ROUGH. If you're considering this tour for your first desert experience, we suggest you should have a crack at our  Simpson Desert Double Crossing Tour  or the Beadell Highways Trek first. New Tour for 2025! Beadell Highways Trek. Alice Springs to Coober Pedy. 15 Nights (incl. Surveyor General's Cnr)

$5775 per vehicle incl. 2 people. 8 vehicles max. off-road camper trailers ok. • 14 may - 28 may 2025.

Starting with our included first night's accommodation at the Desert Palms Villas and dinner at Lasseters Hotel in Alice Springs, we take on several of the legendary Len Beadell's Central Australian "Highways" on this giant "C-shaped" trek. From Alice, we find the start of the Gary Junction Highway , following this deep into the desert past some remote Aboriginal Communities all the way into WA, before heading South on the very scenic and seldom travelled Sandy Blight Road . Emerging onto the Great Central Road , we visit the Giles Meteorological Station near Warakurna, and then onto Surveyor General's Corner , on the tri-state border of SA, NT and WA.  Popping back out onto the Great Central once more, we refuel at Warburton before tackling the remote Connie Sue Highway Southwards into the Great Victoria Desert . From Neale Junction, it's a 900 km run East on the Anne Beadell Highway through incredibly remote desert country. Along the way, there are several points of interest, including the most remote fuel stop in Australia, Ilkurlka Roadhouse, and the Emu Field Nuclear Test Area . We emerge back out into "civilisation" on the Stuart Highway at Coober Pedy, where we will have a night in the underground hotel, and our final dinner together.  Some off-road driving experience is preferred for this tour - it is very remote and the corrugations can be quite rough. What is the best time to visit Western Australia?

The best time to visit Western Australia largely depends on your preferences and what you want to experience, as the climate and attractions vary throughout the year.

Spring (September to November) :

  • Spring is a great time to visit Western Australia as the weather is pleasant and mild.
  • Wildflowers are in bloom, especially in places like the South West, making it a popular time for nature enthusiasts.

Autumn (March to May) :

  • Autumn is another excellent time to visit, with pleasant temperatures and less rainfall compared to the summer months.
  • It's a great time for outdoor activities and exploring the coastal regions.

Summer (December to February) :

  • Summer can be hot and dry in Western Australia, particularly in the northern regions.
  • It's a popular time for beach activities, water sports, and festivals.
  • Coastal areas like Perth, Fremantle, and Margaret River are particularly attractive during this time.

Winter (June to August) :

  • Winter in Western Australia is mild and sometimes rainy, especially in the southern areas.
  • It's a good time for whale watching in places like Augusta and Albany.
  • The northern parts of Western Australia, like Broome and the Kimberley, experience warm and dry weather during this time.

Consider your preferred activities and destinations when deciding the best time to visit. For instance, if you want to explore the Outback, consider the cooler months (May to September). If you're interested in beach activities, then the warmer months (December to February) may be more suitable. Do I need a visa to enter Western Australia?

As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, Western Australia is a state within Australia, so the entry requirements are governed by the Australian government's immigration policies and not specific to Western Australia.

Generally, travelers to Australia, including Western Australia, need a visa to enter the country unless they are from New Zealand or are an Australian citizen or a citizen of another exempt country.

The type of visa you need will depend on your nationality, purpose of visit, and intended length of stay. Common types of visas for visitors include the Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) or eVisitor visa for tourists and business travelers.

It's essential to check the most up-to-date visa requirements and regulations from the Australian government's official website or consult the nearest Australian embassy or consulate for the latest and most accurate information before planning your trip. Visa rules and requirements may change over time, so it's important to verify the current regulations before traveling.

How long does it take to travel to Australia from the UK?

The duration of a flight from the United Kingdom (UK) to Australia varies depending on factors such as the departure and arrival cities, flight routes, and layovers. Here are some approximate flight times for direct flights from major UK airports to popular Australian cities:

London to Sydney: Direct flights typically take around 21 to 23 hours. Some flights may have layovers, which can extend the total travel time.

London to Melbourne: Direct flights generally take around 21 to 23 hours. Like the Sydney route, there may be flights with layovers that could lengthen the total journey time.

London to Perth: Non-stop flights from London to Perth typically take around 17 to 18 hours.

London to Brisbane: Direct flights from London to Brisbane generally take around 21 to 23 hours, with possible layovers.

London to Cairns: Flights from London to Cairns usually have one or two layovers, and the total travel time can range from 23 to 25 hours or more.

Please note that these are approximate flight durations and can vary depending on factors such as the airline, flight schedule, and any layovers. It's advisable to check with airlines or travel agents for the most accurate and up-to-date information regarding flight durations and itineraries.

Is Australia a safe destination?

Australia is generally considered a safe destination for travellers. The country has a stable political system, well-developed infrastructure, and a low crime rate compared to many other countries. However, as with any travel destination, it's always important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings. Here are a few safety tips to keep in mind when visiting Australia:

Personal Safety: Australia is generally safe for tourists, but it's always wise to take common-sense precautions. Keep an eye on your belongings, especially in crowded areas and tourist hotspots. Avoid displaying expensive items and be cautious when using ATMs or carrying cash. Use reputable transportation services and be aware of your surroundings, especially at night.

Natural Hazards: Australia is known for its diverse and sometimes harsh natural environment. Be aware of the potential risks associated with the Australian bush, beaches, and national parks. Follow safety guidelines, obey warning signs, and seek local advice when engaging in outdoor activities.

Sun Protection: Australia has a high level of ultraviolet (UV) radiation due to its location near the equator and the hole in the ozone layer. Protect yourself from the sun by wearing sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and lightweight clothing that covers your skin. Stay hydrated and seek shade during the hottest parts of the day.

Wildlife: Australia is home to unique and often fascinating wildlife. While encounters with wildlife can be a highlight of your trip, it's important to remember that some animals can pose risks. Respect their natural habitats, avoid approaching or feeding wild animals, and follow any guidelines provided by wildlife authorities.

Road Safety: If you plan to drive in Australia, familiarize yourself with the local road rules and conditions. Australia has vast distances between cities, and driving long distances can be tiring. Take regular breaks, observe speed limits, and be cautious of wildlife on the roads, particularly in rural areas.

Emergency Services: Australia has efficient emergency services, including police, ambulance, and fire departments. In case of an emergency, dial 000 for immediate assistance.

It's always a good idea to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses, trip cancellations, and other unforeseen circumstances. Stay informed about local conditions and follow any travel advisories issued by your home country's government.

By taking basic precautions and being mindful of your safety, you can have a safe and enjoyable experience exploring all that Australia has to offer.

Do I require any vaccinations to visit Australia?

No specific vaccinations are required to enter Australia unless you have visited or transited through a country with a risk of yellow fever within six days before your arrival. In that case, you may need to provide proof of yellow fever vaccination.

However, it is always a good idea to ensure that your routine vaccinations are up to date before traveling to any destination, including Australia. These may include vaccinations for measles, mumps, rubella (MMR), diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), varicella (chickenpox), and influenza. Vaccination recommendations may vary depending on your age, health condition, and specific travel plans, so it is best to consult with a healthcare professional or travel medicine specialist for personalised advice.

It's also worth considering other factors such as the activities you plan to engage in and the regions you'll be visiting within Australia. For example, if you plan to spend time in rural or remote areas, it may be prudent to discuss vaccinations for diseases like hepatitis A, typhoid, or meningococcal disease.

It's important to note that health recommendations can change, so it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional or refer to official sources such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) or the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the most up-to-date and accurate information on vaccinations for travel to Australia.

What is the local currency in Australia, and can I use credit cards?

The currency of Australia is the Australian Dollar (AUD). The currency is denoted by the symbol "$" or "A$". The Australian Dollar is subdivided into 100 cents, and coins come in denominations of 5, 10, 20, and 50 cents, as well as $1 and $2 coins. Banknotes are issued in denominations of $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100.

When visiting Australia, it's a good idea to have some local currency on hand for small purchases, public transportation, and other cash transactions. ATMs (Automatic Teller Machines) are widely available throughout the country, and major credit cards are widely accepted at hotels, restaurants, and larger establishments. However, it's always a good idea to have some cash for situations where cards may not be accepted or for smaller businesses that may prefer cash.

Currency exchange services can be found at international airports, major cities, and tourist areas. Banks and authorised currency exchange offices offer currency exchange services, but it's advisable to compare exchange rates and fees to ensure you get a favourable rate.

If you plan to use your credit or debit card in Australia, notify your bank or card issuer in advance about your travel plans to avoid any potential issues with card usage.

Overall, accessing and using your money in Australia is typically straightforward, and the country has a well-developed banking and financial system to facilitate currency exchange and transactions.

Can I drink the tap water in Australia?

Yes, the tap water in Australia is generally safe to drink in most urban and rural areas. The country has strict regulations and high standards for water quality, ensuring that tap water meets the required health standards. The water supply is treated and monitored regularly to maintain its safety.

However, it's important to note that there may be some regional variations in water quality due to factors such as local infrastructure, source of water, and potential environmental influences. In remote or rural areas, it's advisable to check with the local authorities or residents about the water quality before consuming tap water.

If you have any concerns about the tap water or prefer to have additional peace of mind, you can choose to drink bottled water, which is readily available in supermarkets, convenience stores, and restaurants throughout Australia. It's important to stay hydrated, especially during hot weather or when engaging in outdoor activities, so having access to safe drinking water is essential.

Additionally, if you're traveling to more remote or outback regions, it's always a good idea to carry a reusable water bottle and fill it with potable water from reliable sources. Campgrounds and national parks usually have designated water points where you can fill your bottles with treated water.

In summary, while tap water is generally safe to drink in Australia, it's always a good idea to check with local authorities or residents about the water quality in specific areas. Stay hydrated and choose the option that makes you feel most comfortable, whether it's tap water, bottled water, or filtered water.

Top End Tours

Tour the top end.

The “Top End” is a name commonly used to describe the area of Australia around Darwin and Kakadu National Park. This area right at the top of Australia is in the Northern Territory. Other highlights of the region include Katherine Gorge, Litchfield National Park and Arnhem land in the tropical north.

Most travellers head to Darwin and the Northern Territory between May and November each year in the cooler, drier months. this is when Jim Jim and Twin falls in Kakadu National Park open to the public.

The climate in the Northern Territory is very diverse. The habitat in the tropical top is completely different from the desert region around Alice Springs to Uluru . During the Wet Season (December- March) as a 4WD touring specialist, we do take passengers to Kakadu tours all year round. We have various waterfalls and cultural sites to visit in Kakadu National Park and also permeant tented camping and fans for those hotter nights.

The Northern Territory is where we go outback! All our tours here are packed full of adventure. Some with camping and some with permanent tents, depending on your preferred style. The basic camping we do in the NT is in swags, these are Australian bedrolls. Just like your own personal tent, that you slip your sleeping bag into for a night under the stars.

Darwin is also the starting place for our Kimberley tours . The Kimberley region of Australia spans the Northern Territory and Western Australia. Starting in Darwin and finishing in Broome this trip is a small group 10 day 4WD camping and hiking adventure.

We have Northern Territory adventure tours that are the best way to see the region for those on a budget or who want a value for money trip. We also have outback trips for those who require a little bit more style and comfort in Kakadu National Park. Some of our Top End tours have the option to upgrade to hotels or lodges on some of our trips if camping is not for you.

There is a trip to the Top End to suit everyone, let your outback adventure begin.

Trekking 85 Miles With Grandpa, Scuba Diving With Grandma

With older adults staying fit longer, many are joining their grandchildren on travel adventures like wilderness hikes, bike tours and even bungee jumping.

A grandfather in a blue button-up shirt and a beige baseball cap stands next to his granddaughter, who is wearing a pink shirt and has long, wavy blond hair that is blowing in the wind. She is holding a map with a red line marked on it, and there is a lake with boats on it in the background.

By Julie Weed

Rick Rhoads, 80, was “training like crazy” last spring, walking six miles a day — “all hills” — to get ready for his summer vacation. Mr. Rhoads, of Orcas Island, Wash., and Lucy Erent, his 15-year-old granddaughter, who lives in Prague, were planning to trek 85 miles in eight days along Scotland’s West Highland Way .

The route, which passes through farmland and forest and runs along Loch Lomond into the Scottish Highlands , traverses a range of terrains, including steep inclines and rocky trails. A trip organizer was set to manage lodging and transport the luggage each day.

Mr. Rhoads wasn’t daunted by the distance, or by the age difference. He said he was looking forward to continuing discussions the pair has had on video calls, on topics as varied as stage drama, cosplay, pandemics and family dynamics. “I’ll get her to do the talking when we’re going up hills,” he joked.

When they finally did the trek, in early July, there were a few wrinkles: The hiking was tougher than expected, and one of Mr. Rhoads’s boots began to fall apart near the end — nothing some duct tape couldn’t fix. Overall, Mr. Rhoads said, the adventure was challenging, but he was eager to do another, perhaps a route “that passed by cafes.”

Sixty may or may not be the new 40, but it’s clear that many older adults are enjoying longer “ healthspans ” — the time they are active, fit and healthy. This shift is adding a new dimension to traditional grandparent-grandchild vacations: adventure. Think bike trips instead of cruise ships, wilderness treks instead of bus tours.

According to the World Health Organization , healthy life expectancy, defined as “the average number of years a person can expect to live in full health” without disabling illnesses or injuries, rose globally to 63.7 in 2019 from 58.3 in 2000. In the United States, 40 percent of people 65 and older interviewed last year in an Outdoor Foundation study said they engaged in outdoor activities like hiking or biking. Older adults are also now more likely to be able to afford vacations: Americans 55 and over control nearly 70 percent of U.S. household wealth, compared with about 50 percent in 1989 .

Travel companies are taking notice. Craft Travel , a luxury trip planner that handles about 150 itineraries per year, has seen a big increase in grandparent-grandchild travel over the past five years, said Julia Carter, its founder, adding that “the trend has definitely been toward more adventurous, or bucket-list-type, experiences” — African safaris, hikes in Patagonia and trips to Antarctica.

Tour companies and activity providers, which generally don’t impose age caps on their offerings (though some do have minimum age requirements), are making accommodations for the new demographic. Some examples:

The Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort in Savusavu, Fiji, which offers snorkel and scuba outings, has had grandchildren with grandparents as old as 84 learn to scuba dive together. For guests older than 70, along with the standard safety training, the resort provides a doctor to certify the diver’s health.

Road Scholar , a travel company that was founded to serve older adults and now has an online catalog dedicated to grandparent-grandchild travel, details the physical expectations of its trips so participants can decide if they can handle them. The description of its white-water rafting trip on the Lower Salmon River in Idaho, for example, tells travelers they’ll be “carrying bags in camp across uneven terrain. Temperatures often in the 90+ degree range.”

Backroads , which offers multigenerational biking, hiking, snorkeling and kayaking trips, sends training advice in advance of departure. Like many other bicycle trip organizers, Backroads makes e-bikes available, with a typical minimum age set in the midteens. Some grandparents use the e-bikes to keep up with their grandchildren, but depending on everyone’s fitness level, it may be the younger generation using them, said Liz Einbinder, a Backroads spokeswoman.

Some older adults are embarking on more extreme adventures. Nick Steers, the executive director of Great Canadian Bungee , which hosts more than 10,000 guests per year in Chelsea, Quebec, for bungee jumping, zip lining and rafting, said nearly 5 percent of its participants were 60 or older, including some grandparents there with their families. Ron Jones, the founder of Bungee America , outside Los Angeles, said that in July, a 15-year-old had jumped with his grandparents.

Active grandparents have some tips for others considering an adventure vacation with their grandchildren.

“Preparation for any trip is key,” said Joe Bassett, 60, who runs the guided wilderness adventure company Valiant Outfitters . He takes his grandchildren, the oldest of whom is 7, on hikes and overnight stays. For a camp-out he said, grandparents might walk the trail in advance to make sure they know its contours. “An ideal route would be a loop that is never more than a couple miles from the parking lot,” he said. Mr. Bassett advises no-cook meals. “Keep it simple with familiar foods,” he said.

Harriet Vogel, 84, of Palm City, Fla., also has some advice: Choose activities you both enjoy and then “have hopes rather than expectations, and just let the trip happen,” she said. When she was 79, Ms. Vogel celebrated her grandson Matthew’s college graduation by snorkeling, paddle boarding and biking with him in the Caribbean nation of St. Kitts and Nevis, all mutual interests. Last year it was her granddaughter Jessie’s turn, and the two went on a walking and hiking trip in Switzerland, organized by Backroads. Ms. Vogel is currently planning a fall trip with another grandchild. The time together “increases our closeness,” she said.

While many grandparents may be ready to go on adventures with their grandchildren, not all of them are eager to deal with technology to do so.

When Fin Expeditions, in Cocoa Beach, Fla., noticed an increase in multigenerational groups going out on its kayaking tours, management made sure to offer reservations over the phone for those who don’t like dealing with websites.

But that kind of help wasn’t necessary for Fran Doran, 79, of Butte, Mont., who took her granddaughter scuba diving in Thailand this summer as a graduation gift. “I organized it and made all the reservations online,” Ms. Doran said. The pair also rode in a bamboo boat and waded with elephants in a river. “It’s fun to research,” she said.
