The unlikely story of a man who quit his job to make leather headcovers and succeeded

Bluetross' custom-made Italian vachetta leather headcover retails for $195.

Golf Digest's ongoing “Lucky Break” series chronicles the key moments that have launched golf businesses to success. For boutique custom-headcover maker Bluetross, Golf Digest turned out to be the lucky break. In late 2023, we were planning the cover image for the latest iteration of the Hot List equipment guide. The call was made to show a bespoke headcover emblazoned with year and title in striking orange over black. Enter Marc Hanson, who started Bluetross after getting hooked on leathercraft in an unexpected way.

Hanson had moved into customer management for a global healthcare company after retiring from the Navy as a lieutenant commander in 2014. The pandemic both packed his clients' calendars and freed up his as travel was restricted. "I had time on my hands that I wasn't using, and I was trying to think of something to get my brother for Christmas," Hanson says. He decided to try to make a barrel-type headcover in the style of makers like Seamus out of a keepsake pin flag his brother had given him years ago from an outing at Newport Country Club. After a month of trying—and destroying an antique sewing machine his now-wife had received from her grandmother—Hanson had found what would become his vocation.

The Golf Digest commission put a spotlight on what has mushroomed from a hobby into a business that allowed Hanson to quit his "real" job in February. Bluetross' covers might come in the same shape as the ones included with that $600 driver you just bought, but that's where the similarity ends. Hanson sources premium Italian and Horween leather commonly found in luxury handbags and hand makes headcovers designed to acquire patina and improve with use, making them $200 accessories that last far longer than the clubs they're protecting.

The price tag can seem steep, but Hanson believes you get what you pay for. "The leather you see in most sneakers, for example, is what's known as 'chrome tanned,' and it has a plastic coating sprayed on it for durability. If you scuff that coating and the leather itself, there's no way you're ever going to fix it or make it look good," he says. "But think of an expensive pair of dress shoes. That vegetable tanned leather can be buffed and polished, and those shoes can look as good or even better 20 years down the road than when they were new."

Open a shipping box with a Bluetross headcover in it, and the rich, unmistakable smell of fine leather floods out. The covers feel substantial and feature handmade patches and stripes of contrasting leather, fine details like color-coordinated lining and laser engraving that is more durable than embroidery. "I like to say our stuff wears in, not out. I want people to throw it on the ground, onto the wet grass when they're dew sweeping in the morning," Hanson says. "That's just going to make it look better three years from now. Put a little neutral shoe cream on it every once in a while, and buff it out, and it could go to your grandkids."

His lucky break: A Bluetross leather headcover was used to help illustrate Golf Digest's 2024 Hot List cover.

The Hot List cover might have been the first time many golfers saw a Bluetross cover, but they had already been in demand around Hanson's Charleston, S.C., home base. Bluetross has made member-guest gifts for the Daniel Island Club the past three years, and Hanson introduced an innovation there that expanded his product line and showed off his craftsmanship. Players could choose between a headcover or a leather tote bag designed to be given as a token of appreciation to a significant other stuck with extra child-care duty during the four-day event. "We have people come and register and ask, ‘So what do you have this year because my wife said I have to get her another bag,’ " Hanson says. "That's very affirming to know you're making something somebody truly appreciates."

Hanson sells some stock pieces from the Bluetross website but also takes commissions where he riffs on a customer's preferred color scheme. "I make a mockup and send it back, and we go back and forth until they approve the concept," Hanson says. "Then I send an invoice and get to work." Patches, stripes and the Bluetross leather tag get attached to the base leather, which is cut into the headcover blank. The lining of the cover is always color coordinated to the exterior design. From end to end the process to make a cover by hand takes between an hour and 90 minutes, depending on the complexity of the patches or logo. There's no vast assembly line in Hanson's garage, so there's a hard cap on the number of pieces he can turn out in a week.

In addition to keeping up with the tide of new orders—lead times have increased to four weeks—Hanson must carefully manage his inventory of leather. He keeps one hide of each stock color he offers for each of the three varieties of leather used in covers, bags and accessories like yardage book covers. The varieties range in thickness, firmness and finish and give Hanson a color and three-dimensional cutout palette from which to work. One small section of hide can cost upward of $300 from his supplier, and the construction process involves using an industrial stitching machine to make and reinforce seams and produce fine detail like contrast stitching across two different textures of leather. Taking an order with a non-stock color or many individual pieces requires careful supply chain management—a talent Hanson acquired when he was managing logistics for fleets of nuclear-powered vessels in the Navy.

Hanson's ambition? Grow in a way that lets him add local artisans and preserve handmade quality at a scale that makes it possible to feed larger clients like destination resorts. It's a long way from shining his own shoes in basic training—and from burning up the motor on an old keepsake Singer.

Grace Kim WITB 2024: LPGA Tour's 23YO Phenom's Bag Explored

Ranked 83 on the Rolex list, Grace Kim uses the Srixon ZX7 MK II driver, which helps her cover the maximum distance off the tee. Priced at around $583, it is equipped with a 9.5-degree loft, which helps her to launch the perfect conditioning with the best stability!

For the fairway woods, Kim takes charge with the Srixon ZX Mk II (3-wood) priced at around $250. The 3-wood is responsible for providing a good balance between the distance and the control of his shot. To hit the longer shots from the fairway or the tee, Grace Kim chooses the Srixon ZX5 MkII Hybrids (3&4). These clubs, priced at around $280, give her the perfect precision when aiming for the greens.

For the irons, Grace Kim uses the Srixon ZX5 Mk II irons. This helps her achieve accuracy with a consistent performance off the club face, balancing out the distance and conditioning. Priced at $1248, the club was also ranked as the most accurate iron in 2023. She also has the ZX7 MK II Iron, priced at around $1200, to add more versatility to her bag!

Kim's companions for the greens

Grace Kim uses the Cleveland Golf RTX 6 ZipCore (50, 54, 58), with a 64-lie degree for each of them. Priced at close to $200, they are full-faced wedges providing the best grooves 'from the heel of the hosel to the tip of the toe', as they claim.

Scottie Scheffler went back-to-back for a second time this season on the PGA TOUR this time at the RBC Heritage, a week after earning his second green jacket.

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

• - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
• - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
• - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
• - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
• - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
• - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

• - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
• - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
• - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
• - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef). 

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it. 

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it. 

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash. 

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb. 

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think? 

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade. 

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2. 

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....

Tommy Fleetwood caddies stepson past Challenge Tour cut, beats out pros

Fleetwood carried the bag for his stepson Oscar in his first Challenge Tour event with the youngster making it to the weekend.

Tommy Fleetwood was on dad duty for his stepson Oscar Craig this week in his first Challenge Tour start.

The 7-time DP World Tour winner was Craig’s caddie for his debut as he helped lead the youngster to a 2-under through 36 holes.

Playing as an amateur, Craig fired off a 3-under 69 on Thursday and a 1-over 73 on Friday to make the cut in his debut.

Craig finished bogey-free on Day 1 with birdies at Nos. 4, 8 and 18.

Friday’s round proved tougher for the youngster, but he tallied three birdies to go with four bogeys.

The 17-year-old was the only amateur to make the weekend at the UAE Challenge at Saadiyat Beach Golf Club in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

Fleetwood boasted about his stepson on social media after their round.

“Oscar you earned your way into your first Challenge Tour event with your hard work and talent! So proud to witness you make the cut against this quality field. Golf is great,” Fleetwood wrote.

The Englishman commented on a video the Challenge Tour posted with both having smiles across their faces. He pulled him into a giant hug and couldn’t stop smiling while they walked off the green.

They celebrated with family and friends. His mom, Claire Fleetwood, was also there to embrace him.

Fleetwood knows all about the Challenge Tour. At 20 years old, he was the youngest player to finish atop the rankings in 2011 after he won the Kazakhstan Open.

He went on to win his first DP World Tour event, the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles, in 2013.

Fleetwood's caddie duties will continue for the next two days as Craig secured his spot for the weekend. While he will not take home any money, playing all four days in a professional golf event is quite the feat.
