Eco safari Terschelling

Terschelling.

Wie Terschelling écht wil leren kennen, moet instappen in de elektrische terreinwagens van de Eco Safari. Bos, duin, strand, polder… Waar je ook belandt, je komt altijd wel wat bijzonders tegen. “Geen tocht is hetzelfde, want de gidsen bedenken pas bij vertrek waar we heen gaan. Dat is heel Terschellings. Het weer en de natuur bepalen hier de regels”, aldus de eigenaar en natuurliefhebber Maarten Sjoers.

De Eco Safari is een echte “spot”-rit. Je vertrekt dus altijd rond de schemering, om het mooiste wild te kunnen zien. ‘S Ochtends om zeven uur verzamel je daarom bij hotel De Walvisvaarder om je gids te ontmoeten die jullie het eiland zal laten zien. De gidsen van de Eco Safari zijn stuk voor stuk mensen met passie voor de natuur. Je zit dus gebakken als je houdt van enthousiaste vertellers. Na een korte introductie rijd je dwars door de mooiste natuurgebieden, in open wagens die geschikt zijn voor maximaal zes personen. Onder het dak zit je droog, en voor de echt koude ochtenden en avonden zijn dekens aanwezig om de benen warm te houden.

Samen met Staatsbosbeheer zijn routes en plekken afgesproken die de Eco Safari aan kan doen, en ze zijn allemaal bereikbaar via wandel- en ruiterpaden. De gids bepaalt op basis van het weer, de wind en het seizoen waar de rit als eerste langs gaat. Zoals het bos, waar je samen op zoek gaat naar reetjes. “We zoeken ook echt samen”, legt Maarten uit. “Het is natuurlijk geen dierentuin, dus we kunnen geen garantie geven dat we wild zullen spotten. Maar het speuren is vaak al de helft van het plezier. En we komen altijd wel iéts tegen.”  

Na het Hoornse Bos is het tijd om verder te trekken, want vlak na de schemering komen de roofvogels tevoorschijn om hun ontbijtje bij elkaar te jagen. De roofvogels leveren altijd een spectaculair beeld op en ze zijn goed te volgen dankzij de verrekijkers die in de wagens liggen. “De rit is steeds afwisselend een stukje rijden en een stukje zoeken”, licht de Safari-gids toe. “We stappen dus ook af en toe uit, maar trekken niet lopend de natuur in. Soms komen er gasten mee die jarenlang op Terschelling hebben gewandeld, maar dat nu niet meer kunnen. Dan is het fijn dat we ze op deze manier toch nog van de natuur kunnen laten genieten.”

De tocht gaat verder langs duinen, bossen, strand en polder. “Tenzij het heel hard waait, dan wil je niet op de polder zijn”, tipt Maarten. Op iedere plek leer je wat over de cultuurhistorie van het eiland. Bij het bos zul je meer horen over hoe het kan dat er bos groeit op zandvlaktes en hoe turfgrond uit Drenthe op het eiland terecht kwam, en bij de ‘plakken’ (grasvelden aan de voet van de duinen, om te voorkomen dat de duinen verplaatsen) leer je alles over stuifduinen en waarom ze Douwkesplak of Muzeplak heten… 

Je komt geheid thuis met de mooiste verhalen en vooral de allermooiste foto’s. Maarten: “‘s Ochtends hebben we vaak echte die-hard natuurfotografen op de wagens, die helemaal hun kans pakken om de beste foto’s te schieten. Maar we krijgen ook wel specifieke aanvragen, van bijvoorbeeld vogelaars, die samen willen zoeken naar de Blauwe Kiekendief die je hier soms spot. Het kan allemaal!” En ook voor kinderen blijkt de safari een heel avontuur, want in plaats van stilzitten, kunnen ze actief meezoeken naar het wild of in de struiken cranberries plukken.

De Ecosafari van ongeveer twee en een half uur is geschikt voor iedereen die van de natuur houdt. De gids vertelt u alles over het eiland en ook de cultuur en geschiedenis van het eiland komen aan bod.Tijdens de Ecosafari gaan we op zoek naar wilde dieren, we nemen de tijd om verschillende dieren te "spotten". Tijdens de tochten kun je gebruik maken van onze verrekijkers. De routes zijn grootendeels onverhard en in samenwerking met Staatsbosbeheer beschikbaar gesteld. Bent u minder goed ter been? Eco-safari Terschelling en andere groene uitjes

Op duurzame vakantie in eigen land? Geen probleem: voor reisliefhebbers met een groen hart valt genoeg te ontdekken op Terschelling. Van een huifkartocht door een natuurreservaat tot een indrukwekkende eco-safari: dit is waar je moet zijn voor een duurzaam weekje of weekendje weg.

Huifkartocht over de Boschplaat | Oosterend

Voor zeldzame vlinders, planten en zo’n 70 (!) soorten vogels, moet je op de Boschplaat zijn. Dit schitterende stukje natuur, aan de oostkant van Terschelling, telt zo’n 50 km2 en is daarmee het grootste natuurreservaat van Nederland. Spring op een huifkar (scheelt weer uitstoot) voor een tocht langs de mooiste plekken van het eiland, waaronder het wad, het strand en de kwelders. Een tocht duurt tussen de anderhalf en zes uur, en wordt het hele jaar door georganiseerd.

Dark Sky Park | Oosterend

Wist je dat Terschelling een van ‘s werelds donkerste en meest stille plekken is? Het is dan ook niet gek dat je op de Boschplaat Nederlands eerste Dark Sky Park vindt. Hier wandel je ‘s nacht onder een kraakheldere sterrenhemel, met of zonder gids. Het jaarlijkse evenement De Nacht van de Nacht, eind oktober, is een ideaal moment om dit te doen. Neem ook je verrekijker mee, om de Melkweg makkelijker te bewonderen.

Eco-safari | Lies & West

Geloof ons: dit is net zo leuk als het klinkt. Tijdens deze eco-safari rij je in een volledig elektrisch terreinwagentje over het oostelijke deel van het eiland. Lekker schoon en stil, dus. De excursie duurt zo’n 2,5 uur (inclusief pauze met warme drank) en is onder begeleiding van een gids die je alles vertelt over de wilde dieren in het gebied. Wil je in het weekend op safari? Rondje Kringloopwinkels | Lies & West

Als je dol bent op het opduikelen van tweedehands parels, mogen de lokale kringloopwinkels niet op je to-see-list ontbreken. In Lies, ten oosten van Terschelling, vind je ’t Schellinkje. Elke woensdag kun je hier binnenwandelen voor een schat aan spullen waaronder servies, antiek, brocante en boeken. Op sommige dinsdagen is er een rommelmarkt en ook dan is de winkel open. In het westelijk deel van het eiland kun je terecht bij West Aleta.
