History oF NORTHERN LiGHTS

The Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, have enchanted humans for centuries with their mystical and otherworldly displays. Ancient cultures believed they were divine manifestations or celestial spirits. In modern times, we’ve come to understand that they result from the interaction between solar particles and Earth’s magnetic field, creating a breathtaking natural spectacle in polar skies. Today, they continue to inspire awe and wonder among those fortunate enough to witness their magical dance of colors.

The word aurora is derived from the name of the Roman goddess of the dawn, Aurora, who travelled from east to west announcing the coming of the sun.

About our Northern Lights Tours

Each Northern Lights tour is tailor-made every night of the week depending on the clients’ abilities, weather conditions and the Northern Lights forecast . Your guide will teach you about the Aurora Borealis and show you how to make a fire and cook food on it. Detailed explanations of the Northern Lights, wilderness, and the local animals will follow for those who wish to fully understand their surroundings.

We will drive away from the city to find the perfect spot that we think will give us the highest chances of seeing the Northern Lights on that night. We will also find a warm spot to sit and wait for the Aurora Borealis to show. The more time we spend outside – the more likely we will see the Northern Lights.

All of the pictures of the Northern Lights on our website are taken during our tours – some by clients, some by guides and some have even been taken on a mobile phone! Cameras often capture stronger images than what we can see with the naked eye. However, when the Northern Lights start to dance, no cameras are needed , and we actually prefer to put the cameras down and observe this magical phenomenon. This way, it becomes a much more personal experience.

We hope that you get to observe all the amazing shapes and colours of the Aurora during your stay, and we will do our best to maximise your chances.

Private Tours

If you wish to have a private Northern Lights tour  of a length which is different to the above tour option for just you and your family/friends, please contact us by email or phone to make arrangements.

It depends on the time of year and the Aurora forecast. In the middle of winter, we usually leave between 19:00 and 22:00 every evening (depending on the month). You will receive the exact meeting time via email.

Large family/friend groups

If you have a group larger than our usual size, don’t worry! We can still make something fit your group as a private tour , and you will also receive a larger discounted rate – the larger the group will be.

On our tours, you will be happy to know that you will never find yourself being crammed onto a coach load of people. We keep all our tours small and friendly to ensure you get a good amount of time with your guide. We also try to give you the ability to truly enjoy the magical environment beyond the Arctic Circle!

If you have any queries or questions, please don’t hesitate to send an email. We are looking forward to hearing from you!

DO YOU NEED HELP OR ADVICE?

If you have some questions about this tour or our other tours, feel free to contact us by email ( [email protected] )!

Epic northern lights wilderness tour [wild about lapland honest review].

Bradley Williams

As a part of our epic 3 month journey around Scandinavia, one of our biggest goals was to see the breathtaking Northern Lights.

In fact, I’d say that almost everyone who visits Lapland is hoping to see the breathtaking phenomenon as well!

Wouldn't you agree?

Of course you do!

Well, one of the best ways to see the Northern Lights when in Finland is to go on a late night wilderness tour.

That’s why we were so excited to work in collaboration with Wild About Lapland , to see if we could spot the lights as well, and learn more about them from an expert guide.

Well, here’s a look at how we got on with their Northern Lights Wilderness Tour and a cheeky discount at the end!

But first ...

Travellerspoint

Who are Wild About Lapland?

Wild About Lapland are a small, independent tour operator based in Rovaniemi.

This city is easily one of Lapland’s most popular places to visit, as it serves as a great base to go on all kinds of tours and adventures into the nearby nature.

Wild About Lapland offer a variety of daily tours, each one tailored to the time of year you expect to visit.

It was founded just a few short years ago by Theo Turner, an ex British Royal Marine Commando; so you know he has plenty of experience surviving in rugged conditions!

Offering tours with a maximum of 8 people, his goal is to create a more intimate and worthwhile experience on each of his tours, giving everyone the chance to learn more and truly experience the beauty of their surroundings.

If you're keen to find out more about the tours they offer, you can view them here .

But for now, let’s take a look at what you came here for …

Our experience of the Northern Lights Wilderness Tour

The Northern Lights Wilderness Tour lasts for 4 hours and takes you well outside of Rovaniemi, giving you the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights.

Hunting for the Northern Lights

To see the Northern Lights in all their beauty, it’s essential that you get away from any light pollution and find places located with near complete darkness.

These locations are, as you'd imagine, best found well outside of Rovaniemi, so our first stop was a lakeside resting spot about 20 km northwest of the city.

This gorgeous spot is popular year round with Finnish locals, be it for ice fishing in the winter or lake swimming in the summer months.

When the sun goes in at night, it served as a peaceful spot to try and hunt for the nights.

However, due to the cloud cover, Theo loaded us back in the van and took us further outside to an even more remote spot, by yet another incredible lake.

Here the cloud cover was much less and, when our eyes adjusted, we were able to see many of the bright stars in the sky.

Just being by the lake, staring out was very peaceful and tranquil.

As a part of our 4 hour tour, we went to a few other remote spots, but unfortunately were not able to see the lights that night.

The thing about the Northern Lights is there is no way to know for sure when they will come out.

Some weeks they will be out in full force every day of the week and other weeks they may be visible just one or two days.

Typically, October is a very good month and they had great success other nights that week, but unfortunately for us, this wasn’t to be our night.

That being said, there was much more to enjoy as a part of our tour ...

winter gearr

Fireside snacks

This is a key part of every Wilderness Tour, where Theo (or your guide that night) goes ahead and makes a cosy fire, using traditional methods.

Theo taught us how to make a fire without matches, using just a magnesium fire starter and the bark of Silver Birch.

Afterwards, we got to enjoy freshly grilled sausages with sinappi (local Finnish mustard) which tastes amazing!

It was very cosy by the fire, which more than kept away the cold and made for a great spot to relax, talk and keep an eye on the night’s sky.

cooking sasags

Learning more about native Finland

All throughout the tour, Theo put a lot of focus on the history of the local area and how Finnish locals would have survived for hundreds of years using just simple tools and what nature provides.

He’s very knowledgeable of the history of Lapland and it was a great way to learn more about our surroundings.

Also, if our van ever lets us down and we’re stuck in the woods one night, I guess we now know the basics of how to survive!

So long as a bear doesn’t find us ...

making fire

Small group atmosphere

After visiting more than 60 countries around the world, you can imagine that we have been on a LOT of tours!

Well, I certainly can agree with the team at Wild About Lapland that keeping tours to a maximum of just 8 people is a great way to do it.

It gives you the chance to meet everyone there much more closely and gives you more one-on-one time with your guide to ask questions.

It also means you can get to and from sites much quicker, which is a big bonus.

Overall verdict

Despite not being able to see the Northern Lights, I can say that the tour was a massive success!

The night was a lot of fun and I would definitely recommend the tour as being excellent value for money.

It set us up with the knowledge and know-how to spot them on our own on future nights.

Writing this a week after our experience, I can report that we have seen the lights, and the knowledge imparted by Theo was crucial in us achieving this!

He also allowed us to capture their beauty, by showing us the best settings on our camera for Northern Lights photography.

Some epic shots of the Northern Lights

Don't worry, I’m not going to let you leave this post without seeing some awesome shots of the Northern Lights.

As a part of your tour with Wild About Lapland, your guide will use advanced photography equipment to take stunning shots of the lights seen that night.

Sometimes, the camera is able to pick up shots that you can’t even see with your own eyes; so there’s even more chance of you walking away having seen them.

The guys at Wild About Lapland were kind enough to see across the following shots they had recently taken, as an example of what you can hope to see on your own tour with them …

Who is their Northern Lights Wilderness Tour best suited to?

Overall, there is nothing too strenuous about this tour.

Your guide will do all of the driving to necessary spots, and there is only minimal walking involved.

Also, much of your time can be spent sat by the fireplace or snuggled up in big winter coats they provide you with.

As such, you don’t need to worry about getting cold or tired, making this a great tour for almost anyone.

However, those that get the most from it are those that are curious to learn more about 2 things:

  • The Northern Lights
  • The great Finnish outdoors

A key part of this tour is engaging with your guide and gaining a deeper understanding of why the Northern Lights exist, how best to find them and how to photograph them.

As well as learning more about the history of native Finns who used to survive in the wilderness.

Oscar Nominee Selma Vilhunen to Stage Biggest Pic Ever, “She Did Not Show Remorse,” for Dionysos, Nordisk Film (EXCLUSIVE)

'She Did Not Show Remorse'

One of Finland’s most high-profile filmmakers, Selma Vilhunen has given voices to women of all ages in her fiction and non-fiction works, from the Oscar-nominated short “Do I Have to Take Care of Everything” to Berlin Crystal Bear winner “Stupid Young Heart” to her most recent pic, “Four Little Adults,” for which Alma Pöysti won best acting in Göteborg.

Her next pic, “ She Did Not Show Remorse ,” will be her most ambitious epic work, but also her most enraged look at female shame culture in patriarchal societies.

Related Stories

Take-two earnings emblematic of endless risk-taking in gaming biz, jenna ortega says everybody in hollywood wants to be 'politically correct' but that 'lacks honesty' and makes us 'lose a lot of our humanity and integrity', popular on variety.

The story turns on five Finnish women who escape imprisonment after having worked for the Nazi army in Norway during the last months of WWII. As they set on a grueling journey on foot through the arctic wilderness, they soon learn that although the entire Finnish nation once collaborated with the Nazis, only certain women are now treated as traitors, the synopsis says.

Among the women is Irene, who is pressured to come up with a story to explain her months of absence to her husband. When she reaches home, she drops all efforts to lie, leaving her doomed marriage for good for the life of a drifter.

Speaking to  Variety , Vilhunen said she was won over by Kinnunen’s “angry and sometimes merciless” novel. “The women in the story only have bad options to choose from,” she underscored, adding: “In my previous works, I have often focused on depicting solidarity and tenderness and love. In this film, I feel I’m opening the door to all the anger and despair that is also true in this world and in myself. The forces that are trying to make the woman’s space in the world very narrow are strong again today. “

“This is a story about what it means to be a human when the society around you is gaslighting you to believe that you are always somehow inferior or guilty of something.”

“Although the entire Finnish nation was a German ally, and German soldiers had lived and fought in Finland for three years, only Finnish women were treated as traitors if they were caught having been in contact with Germans after Germany was declared an enemy,” the filmmaker explained. “Men who fought in the war have their heroic stories of courage and brotherhood. Women, if they happened to have anything to do with the Germans, were put to shame.”

The prospect of directing the physically challenging epic was another strong pulling factor for Vilhunen, who herself walked more than 1,500 kilometers between Finland and Norway in her mid-twenties -although on another route.

“The physicality of the story is everything,” she said. “It will be demanding to make the film in the Lappish wilderness, but at the same time, I believe that nature will give us so much, and we must be able to adapt to a lot of what nature dictates.”

Vilhunen said the “absolutely fantastic cast” will be unveiled once filming kicks off in May 2025.

The €3 million ($3.2 million) project is being co-produced by Nordisk film Norway & Denmark, Rein Film and Filmcamp in Norway, with backing -so far- from the Finnish Film Foundation, Creative Europe Media, the Lapland Film Commission, and Kuusamo Council. Nordisk Film will handle Scandinavian rights.

In Haugesund, the project will be looking mainly for distribution, further financing and festival attention. “We are always keen to hear what kind of reaction audiences have to our story,” said Hellstedt.

“She Did Not Show Remorse” is among 22 carefully selected projects to be showcased at the 19th Nordic Co-Production Market as part of the New Nordic Films market in Haugesund (Aug. 20-23).
